Benahavis, a small borough between Marbella and Estepona in the heart of the Golden Triangle, is possibly the only place in the world with the largest number of golf courses per inhabitant. Although the population has grown at a notable rate, the fact is that over 5,700 registered inhabitants in 2011 have increased this year with another 527 people who have registered at the Town Hall in the last few months, most of them being foreigners and making the town of Benahavis the least densely-inhabited borough on the whole of the Costa del Sol. Despite the fact its territory covers 145 square kilometres; the number of inhabitants is very low. 12 golf courses, which could soon be 15, run through the territory winding between the mountains and making up the enormous Golf Valley courses, some of which are among the best on the whole of the Costa del Sol. The facilities feature 3 splendid golf courses where tournaments of the highest level have been played, amongst which the Spanish Female Open or Ladies European Tour, European Female Golf Circuit which congregated the most famous golfers in the world. Its three golf courses: Flamingos Golf, Alferini Golf and Tramores Golf, the only European school specialised in short game and personal lessons. It is necessary to highlight the presence of other golf courses in the Benahavis Golf Valley such as Marbella Club Golf which was started by Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe; the courses at La Zagaleta estate, the old residence of the magnate Adnan Khashoggi; the ones at Higueral, within the Capane Golf residential area; Los Arqueros golf courses which are well-known in Sweden and Great Britain, La Quinta’s golf courses bordering Nueva Andalucía and others which make up a total of a dozen different golf courses.
