PROYECTO MAGAZINE SUMMER - FALL 2017

Letter from the President Prior to the Gala, the Association hosted the December luncheon at The Rusty Pelican Restaurant. At this holiday luncheon, newly elected City of Miami Mayor the Honorable Francis Suarez addressed the crowd sharing his vision for the City of Miami. Mayor Suarez has big plans for our city and the LBA is poised to be an active participant and advocate for these plans moving forward.

Eric Montes de Oca

OUR TIME IS NOW! So much has happened since my Presidential Ratification on October 10, 2017 and throughout the entire year. I would like to start by thanking and acknowledging our immediate Past President, Mr. Alex Lastra, for all his hard work and dedication to the Latin Builders Association (LBA). As President, Alex took the Latin Builders to a new level. As a result of his strong leadership, our membership rolls have never been greater, our financial position has never been more stable and our participation in our community has never been more present. On a personal level, I want to thank Alex for taking me under his wing and providing me with a blue print to success. His example is one that I hope to follow, improve upon, and pass forward to our President Elect Mr. Erick Valderrama. The end of 2017 was just a precursor to the excitement in store for the association in 2018 and beyond. This past January, the LBA hosted the party of the year installing yours truly at the Loews Hotel in Miami Beach. The Installation Gala was attended by over 800 members, and their friends and family. The dance floor was packed the entire evening and the casino proved to be an exciting element to the party. The LBA’s signature Black Tie event set a new standard for all Gala’s to follow.

In September of 2017, the Awards Ceremony became the largest event in the history of our organization. Over 1,000 members and member companies packed into the Downtown Omni Hilton to acknowledge and award the businesses that help make our association and our community such a success. These entrepreneurial leaders in our community set the standard we all need to strive for. Lastly, but certainly not least, The LBA Construction & Business Management Charter Academy is a top priority! As proud LBA members we all need to help with fostering growth of the Academy. I will ensure the school’s enrollment continues to increase without compromising the quality of education being provided. The Academy has a new highly motivated principal and a wonderful location ready to receive students. If you are not a member of the LBA yet, please join us at an upcoming luncheon or event, and I am certain you will want to become a member shortly thereafter. The LBA experience is fantastic! Our Time Is Now! Sincerely, Eric Montes de Oca

Letter from the Director There is a very famous quote in the networking world that says, “It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you!” The LBA team is dedicated and strives to make sure that we provide an excellent platform for our members to develop relationships and most of all, close deals. Since our last Proyecto Magazine, we had many LBA Annual events that broke record target attendance and highlighted influential speakers and decision makers in our community. The Annual LBA Fishing Challenge was welcomed this year by a new host, the Playa Largo Resort in Key Largo. The resort was the quintessential backdrop for our signature family event and fun filled weekend. We had a record attendance of 300 guests and anglers, and our Fishing Tournament capped it off with record high participation.

The LBA Committees have also been in full drive as our Women of the LBA Committee (WLBA) and our Next Gen, has taken off at a rapid pace. We have seen extraordinary numbers in attendance and continuous member support. Our LBA Award Ceremony was another huge success. We had a record attendance of close to 900 guests within the audience. We had members and future members join the LBA Leadership with our special guest US Senator Marco Rubio. Senator Rubio joined us in honoring the J. Milton Foundation and the Milton family by presenting a posthumous lifetime achievement award to Jose Milton and his family for all their charitable work within the Miami Community. LBA Events are what differentiate us from all other business associations in the region. The benefits our members and non-members receive from attending these events cannot be overlooked. The opportunity to interact with our associations leadership as well as business and political leaders from the community are the number one reason we have been so successful. As a result, our membership has increased to all time highs thanks to these events and our influential speakers. In order to guarantee our influence in the community, our Board of Directors are committed to making sure that the LBA is moving forward and well represented by participating in advisory boards to discuss our long-term goals and open outlets to advocate our positions in local politics and current events. We have been very fortunate to have a seat at the table for many of these very important discussions and we will continue to push so that our voices can be heard. The LBA Team aspires to make sure that our members focus on one thing; NETWORKING AND UNITING! We will continue striving towards this goal in 2018 and we vow to give you, as members and sponsors, a voice in our success.

Human Touch “…I just want someone to talk to and a little of that Human Touch…” Bruce Springsteen

I

n today’s world of Social Media, Email Marketing, Direct Mail, Television Ads and every other marketing channel you can think of, it is essential for any business or brand, in order to be successful and retain customers, to view their customers on a human level instead of the customerbased level of the past. In a world where every product or service is basically becoming a commodity, you need to differentiate in order to stand out from the crowd. Giving your customers a say in how a job or service gets produced is one good way of making them feel more human and not just another number on your sales sheet. Today’s technology has given consumers more power with all the information available to them and so it makes the task of providing a personalized customer experience all the more important. Preferring to be treated like a human and more than just a number was predicted way back in 2004 in the book “The Future of Competition”. This insightful book explains that consumers will shift their buying and move towards businesses that allow them to participate in creating the product or service mix that they want for themselves. A great example of this is seen in the fast food industry where consumers are allowed to “Have it your Way” and decide what and how much of a topping they can put on the food they buy. Burger King, Chipotle and TCBY Yogurt exemplify this trend and have been doing so for years. They have been able to connect with consumers at this level of personalization and reaped the benefits.

You don’t have to be a restaurant to employ this business model in your organization. Any business can do it no matter if you’re selling accounting or legal services or if your selling concrete or building supplies. All you need to do is know a little bit about your customer and take that information and use it to personalize the experience to that customer. When a buyer can create something different that engages them during the planning process, you have hit a homerun and chances are you will retain that customer for the future if you continue to provide that humanized experience. Here are a few ways you as a business and brand can provide an elevated customer experience with a human based approach. • Make quality connections not quantity. Sure, you can have 5000 followers on social media but if you were to make 500 quality ones instead, you will have a greater impact on your bottom line. • Truly believe in what you are selling. Get your customer personally invested in the decision-making process by giving them the opportunity to be involved, contribute ideas and be heard. This guarantees that you are not just making another sales pitch to a number. • Ask Questions. Create value by learning what your customer’s needs are and listen fully to what they feel they need and try to understand their unique situation.

Ralph Jimenez is a marketing professional with more than 25 years experience helping companies build their brand and help take businesses to the next level. As the head of Exclamarketing he has helped both local and multinational companies develop their brands. EXCLAMARKETING Tel 305.722.7241 Ralph@exclamarketing.com

• Let everyone know what your brand promise is and show how you practice this philosophy in all your communications and marketing materials. • Understand how important the “Positive Customer Experience” is and make sure every time you reach your customer, even online that you deliver a personal message.

A stubborn child with a heart of gold whom sought adventure and independence from an early age... I wish my grandmother was alive to answer that question for you.

Most admired personality in history? There are many important people in history that come to my mind, but on a more personal level, I’d have to said my paternal grandmother Estrella is my hero. She lived a life unfamiliar to and sought by from many women during her era. She was very progressive for her times. What the world needs most today? The ability to willingly compromise. Favorite place in the world? Puerto Rico will be always home in my heart and mind were all my most beautiful childhood memories are. Nonetheless, away from home I’d say Pirate’s Bight in the British Virgin Islands. I love the BVI for the simplicity of life and the infusion of nature. The ability to go island hopping, enjoying the company, culture, food and drinks in a beautiful place totally disconnected from the modern-day society rush. I find freedom and pleasure there. Name the one thing you cannot do without: My family of 6: Alex, Jack, Jorge, Luna and Sam. Luna and Sam are my two precious animals. I really like wine too, though! Chardonnay and Pino Noir to be specific... If you could spend one afternoon with someone, who would that be and what would you do, talk about? I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by so many amazing people throughout my journey, however, if I had one last day to spend with anyone that would be my family. Family is very important to me, I am forever grateful for what and who I have in my life.

Roland Ruiz rollout of the program while implementing many standard procedures we use for annual baseline development, standard methods for design and construction, as well as standards for monitoring and controlling scope, quality, costs and schedule. Almost 3 years later, I’ve witnessed the results of my methods for effective large scale project management and the importance of setting and leading a teamwork culture. The program and our team has received repeated recognition by the Florida Public Service Commission, and by many other industry leaders, for achieving program milestones ahead of schedule and on budget every year. Receiving high level honor and gratitude for hard work is something that my team and I are very proud of. What kind of a kid were you? I was the kid that was always outside being active, whether it was playing sports, riding bikes, or jumping off of bridges into the tamiami canal. I would also spend lots of time rigging boats and re-building motors, cars, and motorcycles with my father.

Birthplace: Miami, Florida Education: I possess a Master of Science in Engineering Management, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, both from Florida International University. Where do you work and what is your role there Florida City Gas (FCG), a regulated natural gas public utility that serves over 109,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers throughout Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Port St. Lucie, Indian River, Hendry and Brevard County. I am the Superintendent for a 10 year pipeline replacement and infrastructure improvement program for the replacement of over 250 miles of below ground natural gas distribution mains and services. I directly manage the engineering and construction of dozens of projects from concept to completion, and control a capital budget of over $105 million. What aspect of your work do you enjoy the most? I enjoy witnessing and embracing the completion of a project that our team designed and constructed. I think the most rewarding thing about being an engineer is seeing your work come alive and function the way you wanted it to. What is your most important achievement to date (personal or professional)? I have several notable personal and professional accomplishments in both my education and work experiences. Probably the most notable recent accomplishment is the overall programto-date success of the FCG “SAFE” program that I manage. I was involved in defining the initial program charter and getting stakeholder approval, and have served as the lead on the overall

Name the one thing you cannot do without: Music If you could spend one afternoon with someone, who would that be and what would you do, talk about? It’ll be my great grandfather. I’d like to hear more stories of his life and experiences in Cuba in the 1800s; how he hand-built structures and developed farms and that are still standing today, and how he rocked parties every weekend as a musician leading his “conjunto” and playing his spanish guitar

n today’s world of Social Media, Email Marketing, Direct Mail, Television Ads and every other marketing channel you can think of, it is essential for any business or brand, in order to be successful and retain customers, to view their customers on a human level instead of the customerbased level of the past.

• Let everyone know what your brand promise is and show how you practice this philosophy in all your communications and marketing materials. • Understand how important the “Positive Customer Experience” is and make sure every time you reach your customer, even online that you deliver a personal message.

• Ask Questions. Create value by learning what your customer’s needs are and listen fully to what they feel they need and try to understand their unique situation. PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY
