Letter from the President THE LBA CUP IS HALF FULL, not half empty We are half way thru 2017 and much has been enjoyed to date including our many LBA luncheons, breakfasts, cocktails and our iconic LBA Golf Classic. We also celebrated another LBA Academy graduating class. Many organizations would consider attaining these achievements as having a productive year, but at the LBA our cup is only half full. As I put pen to paper, we are making preparations to take over the beautiful Playa Largo Resort in Key Largo for the 2017 LBA Fishing Challenge and Family Getaway. Over 350 LBA members and guests will converge on Playa Largo in July to enjoy a weekend of forging friendships, networking and fishing. This year we expect over 25 boats to compete for the LBA Fishing Challenge Championship.

“I am excited for the future of our organization. We have superb leadership in Eric and the others in the “LBA bullpen” who will step up and take over the leadership of our organization in the coming years and bring new, vibrant and innovative ideas to fruition”. Alex Lastra

In addition to planning a fabulous fishing tournament, our LBA staff is busy preparing the August luncheon. The August luncheon kickoffs the second half of the year and is always well attended as members return to work after the summer break. In August, the LBA is also excited to welcome a new freshman class into the LBA Academy. During the second half of the year, we also gear up to host the LBA Awards Luncheon. Over 800 LBA members and guests attended our 2016 awards luncheon. At the awards luncheon, the LBA celebrates and recognizes member companies for outstanding achievements in business and in our community over the year. After the awards luncheon, all hands will be on deck to prepare for the 2018 Installation Gala where our organization will install Mr. Eric Montes de Oca as the next LBA president. I am deeply proud to have led our organization over the past 2 years and truly found it to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Carrying the mantle of LBA president is a badge of honor that I will wear proudly like so many who have come before me. I am excited for the future of our organization. We have superb leadership in Eric and the others in the “LBA bullpen” who will step up and take over the leadership of our organization in the coming years and bring new, vibrant and innovative ideas to fruition. As this will be my last commentary, I take the opportunity to thank the LBA staff, Board of Directors, LBA members and our LBA sponsors who invest in our organization. Without your help and support we would not have accomplished the many successes we had have in the past two years and, because of you, the LBA legacy remains strong and proud. In closing, The LBA cup is never ½ empty!!! Un fuerte abrazo!

Alex Lastra

Impact in the community is our ultimate goal and these individuals have helped give our association a voice. We also encourage our members and future members to partake in our raffles that while they indulge in great prizes, also enhances other opportunities to meet companies that attend LBA events to network. The LBA Committees have also been in full drive as our Women of the LBA Committee (WLBA), has taken off at a rapid pace. We have seen extraordinary numbers in attendance and continuous member support. We have also created a young professionals committee called, “LBA NEXTGEN” which focuses on encouraging young professionals within our organization and community to network and have working opportunities with member companies. With that in mind, LBA NEXTGEN wants to make sure that the LBA Academy is their prime focus and pull awareness into everything we do to make it a success. Our Board of Directors are committed to making sure that the LBA is moving forward with participating in advisory boards to discuss our long-term goals and open outlets to advocate our positions in local politics and current events. …Oh, You’re Gonna Love Me… ”No, no, no, no way I’m livin’ without you I’m not livin’ without you I don’t want to be free I’m stayin’ I’m stayin’ And you, and you, you’re gonna love me Oh, you’re gonna love me.”

T

hose famous lyrics are from Jennifer Holliday’s song “ And I am Telling you I am not Going”, where the singer is telling her boyfriend, husband or significant other that she doesn’t want to be free , she is madly in love and she is irrationally loyal to the other person no matter what happens. In the song, you can feel the heightened emotional level by which she is connected to the other person. She would kill for this person!! Imagine having your customer sing those words to you, and you singing it back to them!! Can you even imagine the level of loyalty and faithfulness that person has to your company and brand? That should be the goal of every company, and if you are not working towards that goal, then you are not doing it right. You might as well just go and take a desk job anywhere that will hire you. Building brand loyalty is what all great brands have in common and much like the song above they do this by influencing you emotionally. The great neuroscientist Antonio Damasio from USC once conducted an experiment with people whose brains were damaged in the area that is responsible for emotions, the Limbic System. The subjects in the experiment were asked to make very simple decisions between two choices, paper or plastic, ham sandwich or turkey sandwich, McDonalds or Burger King. Time and time again these people were not able to make a decision, at least not without some time and effort. He proved that in order to make any cognitive decision or choices, you needed to tap into people’s emotional center of the brain. You want to create the most loyal customer that will follow you wherever you go, forgive you

when you have not kept a promise, and be your brand ambassador, you need to make them feel something inside. You need to make them love you and feel like they are cheating on you if they go somewhere else. You need to make them feel better about themselves.

YOUR BRAND IDENTITY So how do make your customer fall in love with you? Well, you need to begin by taking time to learn about your customer. Not every customer, but your ideal customer. Who is your ideal customer? Think about who is the one that is the easiest to service, the customer that gives you the highest margins, the most fun and delightful to work with and provides the highest value to your organization. Did you figure out who it is? Guess what, he doesn’t exist. This is known as your Unicorn Customer. Unicorns do not exist. Famous marketer and author Deb Gabor explains it this way. “in order build a brand, learn more about your customer and let those insights form your brand identity.” You have your Brand Image which is your logo, your colors and your marketing materials. This is the part you have full control over. Then you have your Brand Identity. Your brand identity is actually how a customer sees YOU and that you don’t have as much control over. If you develop your brand identity and have it match your brand image, you have hit a marketing home run. Whether you like it or not you have a Brand Identity. Your identity is your promise to your customers. It is the way your customer feels before during and after they buy from you. You control this by how you deliver your product or service. Focus on things that you do that differentiate you from everyone else. What do they get from you that they can’t get anywhere else? What is your role in your customers life story? What do you do that will make your customer feel like they are at the top of their game? These are the questions you need to answer and when you do you will see your business improve. The best brands elevate customers self-concept and make them feel better about themselves.

Ralph Jimenez is a marketing professional with more than 25 years experience helping companies build their brand and help take businesses to the next level. As the head of Exclamarketing he has helped both local and multinational companies develop their brands. ExclaMarketing Tel 305.722.7241 Ralph@exclamarketing.com

So, next time you interact with your customer remember to learn about them and find out what makes them tick. Give them what they need so they feel better about themselves. If it’s making them feel like they have found great value in your business or feel like they have made a smart decision by choosing you, let them know that and say it so they are consciously aware of it. Make them feel like they did when they fell in love the first time, completely in love with you like they can’t live without you. You have made their day, created an emotional bond with them and created a customer for life.

They’re Gonna Love You!

What aspect of your work do you enjoy the most? The most rewarding part of my job is improving the lives of the injured and grieving, helping them pick up the pieces while providing them with the financial security they need after a catastrophy. Our lawfirm has a different model than most law firms. We limit the number of cases we take on so we can push cases aggresively and give our client’s the attention and empathy they need. What is your most important achievement to date (personal or professional)? I married my soulmate. What kind of a kid were you? Depends on who you ask. To my teachers I was bad. To my parents I was a handful, but to my grandmother, Bibi, I was an angel and couldn’t be more perfect. The truth is somewhere in between but probably closer to bad.

Slow dance, salsa, merengue, disco, hustle or whatever it is they dance to today? I’m not much of a dancer. I usually just sit on the back rest of the couch and watch. Most admired personality in history? Jose Marti What the world needs most today? CUBA LIBRE! Favorite place in the world? Another tough question because I’ve been to so many great places all over the world. The answer here might be: Madrid, Spain. I lived there as a young teenager and many of the friendships I made while there are still strong today. I suppose it is the fond memories I have that make it my favorite. Name the one thing you cannot do without: The sea. I am an avid boater and there is no more peaceful time in my life than the moments I spend out on the water. If you could spend one afternoon with someone, who would that be and what would you do, talk about? My maternal grandfather. He passed away when my mother was very young so I never got a chance to meet him. I am told that he and I are a lot alike. I’d really like to get to know him. We’d talk about whatever his heart desired.

Superintendent The May LBA luncheon celebrated the 2017 graduating class of the LBA Academy. Students and educational leaders gathered at The Biltmore Hotel to hear Superintendent Alberto Carvalho discuss his thoughts on various issues affecting education in our community and shared his inspirational words with the LBA Academy graduating class. A special thank you to the sponsors of this event including Florida City Gas and Magnolia / Best Buy.

Most admired personality in history? Abraham Lincoln. Dedicated to the principle that all men are created equal, he led our country out of its darkest period.

Birthplace: Miami, FL Education: Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Florida (2003), Law Degree from the University of Miami Law School (2006) Where do you work and what is your role there I am a Partner with the Law Firm of Siegfried, Rivera, Hyman, Lerner, De La Torre, Mars & Sobel, P.A. I am Board Certified in Construction Law and my practice focuses on construction law, condominium law and community association law. Whether it’s contract drafting, disputes during a project or a construction lien foreclosure action, those are just some of the things I handle on a daily basis. The depth of knowledge of construction law at the Firm is amazing. We literally wrote the book on Florida Construction Law. What aspect of your work do you enjoy the most? People come to me because they have a problem and they have placed their trust in me to guide them through the legal process. To achieve a successful result for a client is a very good feeling. What is your most important achievement to date (personal or professional)? Finding my wife, Juliet. She has created an amazing home for our two boys, Benjamin and Samuel. What kind of a kid were you? The good one. I definitely would think before I spoke. I would constantly evaluate the circumstances and surroundings before

What the world needs most today? What’s the page limit on this? First, take a deep breath before you honk your horn. A courtesy honk is one thing. But there is no need to lay on the horn because someone threatened to move into your special lane which you believe belongs to you and only you. Trust me, the person just wants to get to work or see their family just like you, so get over it and welcome them into your lovely lane. After a long day of incivility in my world, it’s nice to see a little civility on the road. Plus, there are crazy people out there. Second, we need to get back to this basic concept of facts. When you went to school and read something in a book that meant it was true. In fact, they made it real easy in the library as they would have a Fiction Section and a NonFiction Section. Now, everything is up for debate. As long as someone read it, heard it or said it, we now have a debate about whether it is true or not. Third, the world could use a leader. Any one? Fourth, and most importantly, there are regimes and beliefs that intentionally stand in the way of basic humans rights at the expense of many in order to concentrate power. The world must always work to combat such oppression.

LBA Board of Directors presenting Superintendent Alberto Carvalho with the LBA Plaque of Appreciation

Favorite place in the world? The food, the sea, the history. Bellissimo! Name the one thing you cannot do without: My family and friends. Life’s about stories and relationships developed over good and bad times, drinks, holidays and parties. If you could spend one afternoon with someone, who would that be and what would you do, talk about? Myself, when I was 15. I think I could impart some wisdom on that young man.

RON ZACAPA The Art of Slow with Marcy Rudershausen

A

s summer approaches …well, does summer actually ever leave South Florida?... hmm? yep… you know what I mean! We have learned to live with varying degrees of summer temperatures. However as the months of June, July and August arrive things do begin to slow down. The air gets thick. We can feel rain in the air before it begins to fall. Things just seem to slow down in South Florida.

Perhaps you yourself have moments when you begin to slow down. Is it as a result of a busy personal life? Busy work life? Or do you perhaps take this time to focus on things that mean something extraordinary to you? Do you look forward to perfecting a passion like painting, yoga or perhaps your ability to create the perfect cocktail or the perfect Beef Bourguignon? What is your Art Of Slow? When you have the answer might I entice you to delve into it with a beautifully impeccable glass of Ron Zacapa.

Marcy Rudershausen

Allow our “Art of Slow” to accompany yours and take you to a new personal level of bliss.

Ron Zacapa has perfected “The Art of Slow”. Lorena Vazquez, Master Distiller for Ron Zacapa, in her infinite wisdom on how to create the most luxurious and perfect rum is sharing with us what “The Art of Slow” means to her and the resulting exquisiteness of Ron Zacapa. “Life has never moved so fast - rushing all day and in all directions, always connected always moving. How about a different way of life? An intelligent take on what represents in this day and age true luxury; time.

…. and as always sip into something more comfortable…responsibly and enjoy discovering “The Art of Slow” known as Ron Zacapa. Slainte! Salud! Cheers!

It’s a celebration of the magic that happens when you allow the right amount of time to craft meaningful and pleasurable experiences and more importantly, take the time to enjoy the moment. Fast Speeds Earn Hotwire Communications ® Top Rank Among Major Internet Service Providers

The Violeta Duenas Montes Senior Center Grand Opening

When compared with other major ISPs, Hotwire Communications’ Fision® Internet service came out on top, earning the company the accolade of Fastest ISP for 2017. Industry peers and national media took notice because Hotwire Communications was not the largest provider to have its customers submit speed tests. More familiar names such as Xfinity® by Comcast® and AT&T® Fiber were among those major ISPs ranked lower than Hotwire Communications in the competition.

On April 7th, Guillermo Fernandez, Past President of the LBA celebrated the grand opening of a new senior center in Kendall. The Violeta Duenas Montes Senior Center, an 18,351 square foot project, designed by Juan C. Salinas Architects for Little Havana Activities & Nutrition Centers of Dade County, is two stories with reinforced concrete and steel. The building, includes a cafeteria, auditorium, food prep area, arts and crafts area, adult day care, and various classrooms. Among its more eye-catching features are its full height exterior glass system, its high ceiling covered entrance, and second floor terrace. This is the second facility LINK CONSTRUCTION GROUP has built for LHANC.

In tests of both download and upload speeds of major ISPs, Hotwire Communications ranked number one. In fact, it beat out the next top-ranked provider by over 40 Mbps, showing once more the impact of Fision Fiber Optics as a Fiber-tothe-Home product.
