UNITED STATES

Following the official Japanese military surrender in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, the United States was the first of all the Allies to pick up polo again. The fact that MeadowBrook hosted an open championship in 1946 is nothing less than extraordinary. However, Eight players responded to the opening bell for the final match, and two of them were Americans while the other six were Mexicans. This demonstrated how the times had changed. Gabriel, José, Guillermo, and Alejandro Gracida Hoffmann defeated Mike Phipps, Stewart Iglehart, Antonio Nava Castillo, and Alberto Ramos Sesma’s mixed team, Los Amigos. But in that year, American teams kept the Avila Camacho Cup at both San Antonio and Meadow Brook.

Pete Bostwick, Peter Perkins, Alan Corey, and Devereux Milburn, Jr. ‘s team crushed the Argentine military in their spectacular debut at Palermo. Unfortunately, the mediumhandicap La Concepción squad shocked everyone by defeating the American team 14-12 in the second round. Jorge Torres Zavaleta, who would go on to become president of the Argentine Polo Association, remembered this match as the pinnacle of his polo career

many years later. The 1950 edition of the Cup of the Americas was held in Buenos Aires.

UNITED KINGDOM

The United Kingdom was exhausted after the end of World War II. Currency restrictions and food rationing became frequent during the Labour Party’s time in office. However, in the summer of 1947, polo made a few shaky steps at both Rugby and Cowdray Park. The Cowdray Park Challenge Cup was revived as early as 1948;

appropriately, it was taken by the host club with a team that included Maj. Colin Davenport, the Hon. Daphne Lakin—Lord Cowdray’s sister—her husband John Lakin and Lord Cowdray. The presentation of the Cowdray Park Gold Cup was a historic

occasion. From 1876 until 1939, the Hurlingham Champion Cup held the honour. Los Indios from Argentina, a visiting team, won the competition. Father of two and grandfather of seven players with a 10-goal handicap, Antonio Heguy served as the team’s captain. Polo history is dynamic, evolutionary and a testimony of contemporary realities. The upheaval caused by the world wars is relevant to the sport of polo and its own individual revolution; showing how polo is a contemporary sport that has been shaped and reformed through a history that shaped an entire world polity.

In some of the mouthwatering matches, Casimir guided Tusker Malt to a 6-2.5 triumph while Kimoi did it for Radio Africa in their 5-3 success over Live Eye.

The reason Kimoi came back to score another hat-trick for Radio Africa was because Raphael Nzomo’s hat-trick for Live Eye in the first three chukkas had irritated him. Moses Wainaga’s double sealed the victory for the winners.

MUSIC AND HORSES

Horse taps are a unique form of music, making horses akin to nature’s own musicians. But do horses enjoy music? We observe horses moving to music while doing dressage routines and dancing alongside other species. When strolling, trotting, or running, riders partner with them at tempos of two and three beats. This leads to our inquiry: Is music beneficial for horses?

14

Of all creatures on earth, horses and humans have the most similar hearing ranges. The frequency range of a horse’s hearing is 55Hz to 33,500Hz, compared to the human hearing range of 20Hz to 20,000Hz. Horses are affected by sounds in both positive and negative ways. High agitation may result from being unable to leave the pasture during a violent rainstorm. Muscles can stiffen or become stressed out by an abrupt jarring sound or harsh frequency. It might be just as crucial to give your horse the greatest veterinary care and nourishment as it is to provide the optimum acoustic

environment.

Do horses enjoy musical entertainment?

Pitch, tone, frequency, and volume all play a role in music. Horses and other animals communicate via these aspects of sound, which also aid animals in assessing their surroundings in order to survive.

Short melodies and pounding rhythms are the types of music that horses respond to the most. If you’re seeking music that meets these requirements, classical or country music played softly will have a beneficial effect and help horses to

relax while they are sleeping, eating, or getting groomed in the barn. The most crucial factors in music are the frequency and volume, and not so much the genre. Music is just as calming to animals as it is to us. So part of caring for your horse should involve learning what noises his ears are particularly sensitive to and how to calm any worry using music.

Should music be played for your horse?

can have a relaxing impact on the horse. The constant playing of music will harm your horse, therefore refrain from doing so. While horses occasionally require some quiet time, music can be stimulating. In general, you ought to leave the music on for a couple of hours per day. Horses won’t get tired of the same music. Pet Tunes, which is essentially a speaker system created especially for animals, is another useful small device. YouTube and other free

You may lessen the stress in horses by using music’s calming effects. For instance, your horse will cope better with potentially stressful situations if it hears its favorite music while visiting the farrier or the veterinarian. If you anticipate a rainstorm, you may leave music playing in the barn all night.

Storms, fireworks, and other loud, abrupt noises can all be frightening to horses. A little background music will be a welcome distraction and keep its mind occupied.

Horses love listening to music played on the cello, violin, and Native American flute, but not on the guitar. “Playing music helps balance equine behavior because it helps cover outside sounds and vibrations, such as tractor engines, high-pitched tools, thunder, and other powerful sounds,” explains Janet Marlow, a researcher, and musician renowned for researching how animals respond to music.

Equine performance and music

A Polish study using three-year-old Arabian racehorses discovered that music had a positive impact on every activity. Unbelievably, horses who listened to music outperformed their non-listening counterparts in races.

Conclusion

Music is a fantastic way to keep horses relaxed and can even improve performance. In addition to aiding in relaxation, it can also be used to lessen tension in unfamiliar situations, make dental, veterinary, and farrier appointments less uncomfortable, conceal bothersome noises, and even prevent stress-related illnesses. While listening to music might improve performance, one must be careful to choose the proper genre.

EQUINE WORLD MOURNS DEATH OF CHAMPION JOCKEY AVERY WHISMAN

The equine community was shocked to learn that champion jockey Avery Whisman passed away on January 14 at the age of 23. Although the cause of death has not been determined, one story claims that the rider may have died as a result of a “prolonged fight with the unyielding physical and mental demands put on riders.” Whisman rode in 810 races during the course of his brief three-year career, winning 90 of them. His most recent competitive excursion took place at the Presque Isle Racetrack in Pennsylvania last August. The young jockey broke a track record when he rode “Simply Furious” to victory in the £80,000 Karl Boyes Stakes at the same track in July.

Randeep Hooda, a wellknown actor from B-town who has excelled in a number of films and web series, was involved in a tragic accident while engaging in his favourite pastime of horseback riding. He lost consciousness while riding his horse, seriously hurting himself. The artist was brought to a local hospital after the unexpected mishap, where the doctor admitted him and provided first aid. According to sources, the fall severely injured his knee and his leg because there was no muscle left to cushion the fall. While the actor’s physicians have prescribed complete bed rest, there are rumours that his left leg may need surgery.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

The doyenne of the British fashion world passed away on 29 November 2022 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy that mostly consisted of clothing designs laced with elements of the 1970s punk culture. Her death brings down the curtain on a much-publicised era in the fashion world, characterised by designs tinged with electrifying quirkiness.

Vivienne Westwood (nee Swire) was born on 8 April 1941 in Tintwistle, Cheshire, to Gordon Swire and Dora Swire. Her parents were married a few weeks before the outbreak of the Second World War. She was born into a working-class family, given that at the time of her birth, Westwood’s father worked as a shopfloor hand in an aircraft factory.

When Westwood was seventeen, her family moved to London, where she enrolled in a jewellery designing course at the University of Westminster. Incidentally, she quit the course

world given a humble background might be an irrational endeavour.

Having temporarily put aside her dreams of being a jewellery designer, Westwood went on to enrol in a teaching training course, eventually

becoming a primary school teacher. During this period, Westwood tried her hand at part-time jewellery designing, selling her pieces at a stall on Portobello Road. It was sometime around this time that she met her husband Derek Westwood,

28

whom she wed in 1962. Their son, Benjamin, was born in 1963.

Westwood’s breakthrough years

Westwood’s marriage to Derek slowly began to crumble after she began an affair with fellow

fashion designer Malcolm McLaren. After the end of her first marriage, Westwood and McLaren moved into Thurleigh Court in Balham, where the couple’s son Joseph Corré was born in 1967. Westwood continued to work as a primary school teacher until 1971, while

simultaneously beginning to collaborate with McLaren on designing clothes. During this time, McLaren became the manager of the then-upcoming punk band Sex Pistols, and subsequently, the couple garnered attention as the band wore Westwood’s and McLaren’s designs.

In the first half of the 1970s, punk culture slowly began to seep into mainstream fashion design. Westwood’s and McLaren’s strong advocacy for the nascent movement helped to hasten its growth. Given her deep involvement in this area, Westwood was considered a prominent enabler of the punk fashion phenomenon, and was quoted as saying “I was messianic about punk, seeing if one could put a spoke in the system in some way.” The store that she co-managed with McLaren, SEX, was a meeting place for early members of the London punk scene. Westwood also inspired the style of punk icons, such as Viv Albertine, who wrote in her memoir, “Vivienne and Malcolm use clothes to shock, irritate and provoke a reaction but also to

inspire change.” Her eccentric, offbeat designs were also a reflection of Westwood’s strong desire to create designs that had characteristics of anti-establishment elements.

McLaren and Westwood’s first fashion collection to be presented to potential international buyers was called Pirate. Post its remarkable success, the couple went on to present many more collections in Paris and London with the thematic titles Savages (shown late 1981), Buffalo/Nostalgia Of Mud (shown spring 1982), Punkature (shown late 1982), Witches (shown early 1983) and Worlds End 1984 (later renamed Hypnos, shown late 1983), among others. Her partnership with McLaren was dissolved, after which Westwood showed one more collection under the Worlds End label: Clint Eastwood (late 1984–early 1985).

She dubbed the period 1981–85 “New Romantic” and 1988–91 as “The Pagan Years” during which “Vivienne’s heroes changed from punks and ragamuffins to Tatler girls wearing clothes that parodied

the upper class”.

Later years

Vivienne Westwood’s stellar work was acknowledged by every segment of society, including the establishment whose values she had opposed through her works. In 1992, she was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II for her

contribution to the fashion world. Again in 2012, Westwood was chosen as one of The New Elizabethans to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. A panel of seven academics, journalists and historians named Westwood among a group of 60 people in the UK “whose actions during the reign of

an ambassador for the clean energy crowdfunding platform Trillion Fund. Like most of her contemporaries have always said of her, Westwood lived by her values throughout her life, which made her stand apart both in personal and professional spheres of life.

After her death was announced, tributes for Westwood poured in from around the world. Many who had worked with her took to social media to share their experiences of interacting with her, adding that his magnetic presence would be missed. Former Sex Pistols guitarist Glen Matlock paid tribute to Westwood, stating that it was “a privilege to have rubbed shoulders with her in the mid’70s at the birth of punk and the waves it created that still resound today for the disaffected.”

At times a controversial yet enigmatic figure, Westwood will still be remembered for her evocative work.
