olo in India has a regal past. From Maharaja Man Singh II and Rao Raja Hanut Singh, who together heralded the golden age of polo, today young polo players like HH Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh are

making a mark internationally. However, the royals and the Army are no longer its exclusive keepers. The game is coming into the open, abandoning its “hidden heritage” tag, and opening itself up to a new generation of Indians. The only “elite” aspect with which polo is aiming to be viewed as, is in its sportsmanship and grit in the sport.

Indian polo veterans have made their mark in the history of Indian polo and now it’s their turn to pass the torch to the next polo stars in the making. We reached out to Syed Basheer Ali and Jaivirsinh Gohil, and asked them their point of view with regards to the same.

Syed Basheer Ali has played polo for more than two decades. At a very young age, Ali along with his brothers Shamsheer and Hamza were trained by Nawab Syed Shujat Ali to become polo champs. Till date, the discipline and dedication instilled by his father are his biggest strength, so much so that he believes his

father to be the reason of his successful career and advises families to support young polo players, with better fields and more patrons.

Jaivirsinh Gohil (popularly known as Chamma among polo players and fans), coached by Mr JB Gohil from Gujarat for the first seven years of his life, too lays importance to the appropriate mentor. He says: “Only an experienced coach or

mentor can recognize a player’s talents, skills, and potential. In my opinion, even if a player surpasses a mentor in skill and talent later in his career, he will still need that mentor’s advice.”

While family support is important, Sayeed Basheer Ali also feels that practice can be a game changer. When asked about what would be his advice to young players, his response

6

was “play, play, play”. One can sum it up with the old saying: “Practice makes a man perfect.”

Taking a similar stand on the question, Jaivirsinh Gohil revealed that 70% share of victory goes to the pony and the remaining 30% to the player. As a result, the only option to advance in the game is to get more experience by taking part in more matches. Additionally, he advises buying ponies, caring for them, and, if necessary, hiring management personnel. But, perfection is not a destination, rather, a journey and who better than Jayvirsinh Gohil can understand this. While conversing with us, he told us that he began riding when he was 14 years old. Since his father forbade the use of any vehicles and the ground was 15 kilometers distant, the only choice was public transportation. For five years, he would get on a bus at 4.30 in the morning and run 2 kilometers to get to the ground. This determination and patience has made him one of India’s most in-demand Polo players today.

As they say, every master was once a beginner, so we asked about their favourite memory of playing polo when they had started out. While, among many events, Syed Basheer Ali remembers his Bagota tournament where he, although lost, was delighted to have reached the finals, Chamma said going to the Jindal group last year altered his game. Additionally, the daily international-level chukker practice sessions with the best players revamped his and his horse’s level of fitness, which further enhanced his performance.

Finally, we asked how the polo fraternity might support the academic components of polo and inspire the next generation to learn the game. “In India, there are 32 states, but only 4 or 5 of them play polo. Therefore, Polo needs to be popularized by hosting awareness-raising events in many states. In order to inspire the younger generations, Polo should be introduced in perhaps two or three schools across each state,” said Jayvirsinh Gohil.

Astatue of a Polo player sitting on a horse was inaugurated by Home Minister Amit Shah on January 6. The 122 foot tall statue is set up at The Imphal’s Marjing Polo Complex. The legacy of Sagol Kangjei, the sport that led to the birth of modern Polo, needs to be carried on. The statue is also a source of recollection of the dire need to conserve the Manipuri Ponies. The statue is a starting point for reviving The Manipuri Polo so that more youngsters take up the sport and carry it forward.

BLOCKBUSTER TECH IN POLO

The reigning technologies of today, that have seeped into virtually all sectors, are also making an impact in Polo. Many new technologies can avert equine problems even before they actually start showing signs.

16 COVER STORY

Technology has seeped into every possible area of our society. The world of equestrian has had it no different. There have been numerous advantages to adopting Tech. First, the internet has enabled experts in the equestrian field to share best practices with one another in real-time. Second, sophisticated medical devices have made it possible to maintain systematic records on the health parameters of horses, to ensure owners are aware of the animal’s well-being. Third, ultra-modern sensors keep track of animal movements in the stable, so if

17
FEATURE

there is any distress detected, its carers can reach it immediately to address the issue. And finally, it helps in tracing the essential relationship the horse shares with its rider, thereby providing a chance for trainers to strengthen the bond they have.

In this piece, we track the futuristic gadgets flooding the equestrian markets.

Blockchain: This is a system in which a record of transactional

information is maintained across computers that are linked in a peer-to-peer network. Though its uses have been found most beneficial to organisations in the financial space, it is steadily gaining a foothold in other areas as well. Blockchain allows horse owners from across the world to store valuable information about horses, and their prices, among others in electronic devices. Essentially, an equine enthusiast can access the database to gather any needed information. These days

18
FEATURE

several federations require microchips to be inserted in horses, including the United States Equestrian Federation, to monitor the animal’s health status. Consequently, Microchip manufacturers are benefiting from the move, but so will prospective horse owners, veterinarians and anyone else interested in learning more information about a specific animal.

3D Printing: 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is the construction of a threedimensional object from a

digital 3D model. It can be done in a variety of processes in which material is deposited, joined or solidified under computer control, with the material being added together, typically layer by layer.

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia has recently developed a 3D horseshoe printing technology to generate horseshoes using imaging software that analyses the hoof in detail to provide shoes with a superior ergonomic fit. In a similar vein, it could also be used to design prosthetics for animals

19 FEATURE

with injured legs.

Virtual Reality: Virtual reality is a simulated experience that employs pose tracking and 3D near-eye displays to give the user an immersive feel of a virtual world. It provides a revolutionary way for veterinarians to practise surgeries on horses. Complex

20
FEATURE
All Manipur Polo Association

surgeries can now be practised in a classroom ad libitum, minimising the risk to animals. It also helps in saving the animal from enduring invasive procedures, while simultaneously providing a rich simulated learning experience.

Movement Sensors: A sensor is a device that detects events and changes in its environment and sends the information to other electronics, consequently sensors generally come paired with other electronics.

Advanced wearable horse girth allows for the measurement of a horse’s heart and breathing rate during various types of movements like walking, trotting, cantering, and galloping. This collected

21 FEATURE

information is saved for review. The inferences drawn from that review could later be used for fine-tuning the training program based on the evaluation of the horse’s performance.

Internet of Things: The Internet of Things describes physical objects with sensors, processing ability, software and other technologies that connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the Internet or other communications networks. One of the more recent arrivals in this segment has been connected saddles. These record data such as the regularity of a horse’s strides, and speed, among others. Post that, all the collected data is transmitted via Bluetooth to smartphones for instant feedback, thereby aiding in improving horse performance and efficiency.

Artificial Intelligence: Artificial intelligence is intelligence—perceiving, synthesising, and inferring information—demonstrated by machines, as opposed to intelligence displayed by

humans. An example, in this case, includes speech recognition, computer vision, and translation between languages, among others. AI-powered wearable devices

22
FEATURE

collect data about external field conditions like temperature, humidity, etc, that will after that be thoroughly analysed in order to provide recommendations

to trainers.

Drones: Drones are flying robots that can be remotely controlled by an on-ground handler. Though their specific uses in the field of equestrianism remain unclear, it is believed that they could potentially be deployed to deliver vaccines to veterinarians in remote areas, who treat horses.

Augmented Reality: Augmented reality is an interactive experience that combines the real world and computer-generated content. The content can span multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, and olfactory. Equine thermography, for instance, uses a camera that detects infrared waves on the horse’s body surface that are invisible to the human eye. Specific devices use that information to detect issues in horses’ ligaments, tendons, and muscles, among others to detect prospective injuries often weeks before the animal is even showing signs of pain, allowing for the opportunity to preventatively treat the animal.

KENTUCKY HORSE TESTS POSITIVE FOR STRANGLES

Strangles were found in a two-year-old Thoroughbred gelding in Fayette County, Kentucky. On December 28, the horse arrived from out of state at the race training facility. On December 29, he became fractious and was isolated from the other horses at the facility. On January 2, a second fever was detected, and the horse was transported to a referral hospital, where it is still being treated in isolation. Strangles was announced officially on January 4. Thirteen more horses have been affirmed. Streptococcus equi subspecies equi, which causes strangles in horses, is spread through exposure to infected animals or contaminated surfaces.

HORSE POSITIVE FOR EQUINE INFLUENZA IN WASHINGTON

One horse in Pierce County, Washington, has been identified as having equine influenza, according to the State Veterinarian’s office. The horse is housed at a personal establishment. We don’t know if any more horses were affected. There isn’t a quarantine in place right now. Equine influenza is a respiratory illness that affects horses, ponies, and other equids like donkeys, mules, and zebras. It is extremely contagious. It is transferred by the virus that causes it through sick horses’ saliva and respiratory secretions.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

The doyenne of the British fashion world passed away on 29 November 2022 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy that mostly consisted of clothing designs laced with elements of the 1970s punk culture. Her death brings down the curtain on a much-publicised era in the fashion world, characterised by designs tinged with electrifying quirkiness.

Vivienne Westwood (nee Swire) was born on 8 April 1941 in Tintwistle, Cheshire, to Gordon Swire and Dora Swire. Her parents were married a few weeks before the outbreak of the Second World War. She was born into a working-class family, given that at the time of her birth, Westwood’s father worked as a shopfloor hand in an aircraft factory.

When Westwood was seventeen, her family moved to London, where she enrolled in a jewellery designing course at the University of Westminster. Incidentally, she quit the course

36
BEYOND
37

just after one term as she felt that making a mark in the fashion world given a humble background might be an irrational endeavour.

Having temporarily put aside her dreams of being a jewellery designer, Westwood

went on to enrol in a teaching training course, eventually becoming a primary school teacher. During this period, Westwood tried her hand at part-time jewellery designing, selling her pieces at a stall on Portobello Road. It was sometime around this

38
BEYOND

time that she met her husband Derek Westwood, whom she wed in 1962. Their son, Benjamin, was born in 1963.

Westwood’s breakthrough years

Westwood’s marriage to Derek slowly began to crumble after

she began an affair with fellow fashion designer Malcolm McLaren. After the end of her first marriage, Westwood and McLaren moved into Thurleigh Court in Balham, where the couple’s son Joseph Corré was born in 1967.

Westwood continued to work as a primary school teacher

39
BEYOND

until 1971, while simultaneously beginning to collaborate with McLaren on designing clothes. During this time, McLaren became the manager of the then-upcoming punk band Sex Pistols, and subsequently, the couple garnered attention as the band wore Westwood’s and McLaren’s designs.

In the first half of the 1970s, punk culture slowly began to seep into mainstream fashion design. Westwood’s and McLaren’s strong advocacy for the nascent movement helped to hasten its growth. Given her deep involvement in this area, Westwood was considered a prominent enabler of the punk fashion phenomenon, and was quoted as saying “I was messianic about punk, seeing if one could put a spoke in the system in some way.” The store that she co-managed with McLaren, SEX, was a meeting place for early members of the London punk scene. Westwood also inspired the style of punk icons, such as Viv Albertine, who wrote in her memoir, “Vivienne and Malcolm use clothes to shock, irritate and

40
BEYOND

provoke a reaction but also to inspire change.” Her eccentric, offbeat designs were also a reflection of Westwood’s strong desire to create designs that had characteristics of anti-establishment elements.

McLaren and Westwood’s first fashion collection to be presented to potential international buyers was called Pirate. Post its remarkable success, the couple went on to present many more collections in Paris and London with the thematic titles Savages (shown late 1981), Buffalo/Nostalgia Of Mud (shown spring 1982), Punkature (shown late 1982), Witches (shown early 1983) and Worlds End 1984 (later renamed Hypnos, shown late 1983), among others. Her partnership with McLaren was dissolved, after which Westwood showed one more collection under the Worlds End label: Clint Eastwood (late 1984–early 1985). She dubbed the period 1981–85 “New Romantic” and 1988–91 as “The Pagan Years” during which “Vivienne’s heroes changed from punks and ragamuffins to Tatler girls

41
BEYOND

wearing clothes that parodied the upper class”.

Later years Vivienne Westwood’s stellar work was acknowledged by every segment of society, including the establishment whose values she had opposed through her works. In 1992, she was awarded an OBE by

Queen Elizabeth II for her contribution to the fashion world. Again in 2012, Westwood was chosen as one of The New Elizabethans to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. A panel of seven academics, journalists and historians named Westwood among a group of 60 people in the UK “whose

42
BEYOND

actions during the reign of Elizabeth II have had a significant impact on lives in these islands and given the age its character”.

Throughout her life, Westwood championed several charitable causes, the most prominent being environmental conservation.

Westwood eventually became an ambassador for the clean energy crowdfunding platform Trillion Fund. Like most of her contemporaries have always said of her, Westwood lived by her values throughout her life, which made her stand apart both in personal and professional spheres of life.

After her death was announced, tributes for Westwood poured in from around the world. Many who had worked with her took to social media to share their experiences of interacting with her, adding that his magnetic presence would be missed.

Former Sex Pistols guitarist Glen Matlock paid tribute to Westwood, stating that it was “a privilege to have rubbed shoulders with her in the mid’70s at the birth of punk and the waves it created that still resound today for the disaffected.”

At times a controversial yet enigmatic figure, Westwood will still be remembered for her evocative work.
