THE MODERN COMPACT EDIBLE GARDEN

Landscaping with edibles is a modern and practical way to make the most of your outdoor space. Whether you have a large garden, small courtyard, or a balcony, with a range of compact edibles you can create a productive kitchen garden.

By cultivating your garden space, you can enjoy multiple benefits for your wellbeing. Not only will you create a beautiful and relaxing environment, but you will also grow fresh and nutritious ingredients for your cooking.

By using traditional techniques with a fresh look on some garden favourites, you can design a garden to literally fit your needs. Espalier and topiary techniques combined with the right plant choice is the secret to success.

Espalier and trellising are methods of training trees to grow flat against a wall or fence, creating a beautiful and productive feature. This technique is ideal for small spaces, as it allows you to grow a variety of trees and shrubs that can provide edible crops.

Some examples of plants that can be espaliered are:

Apples and pears:

These are classic fruits that come in different varieties, such as Gala, Pink Lady, Crimson Crisp, Nashi, Beurre Bosc, or Packham's Triumph. You can harvest fresh apples and pears from your own garden and enjoy them in pies, salads, or juices.

Citrus trees:

A traditional feature in Australian gardens, citrus offer fragrant flowers and juicy fruits. However, some varieties can grow too large, making it hard to harvest fruit and treat gall wasp infestation, a pest that causes swellings on branches and reduces fruit production.

Proven citrus trees for the garden are Meyer, Eureka or Lisbon lemon, Tahitian lime, Mediterranean sweet orange & calamondin cumquat. They can be grown in pots or in the ground & clipped to shape to fit your space, making it easy to harvest and treat.

Figs:

These are delicious fruits that are easy to grow, as they do not need much water or fertiliser. You can grow Black Genoa figs as free-standing trees or espalier them if you have a smaller space. Figalicious is a wonderful compact growing tree that thrives in pots and a-re great for eating fresh or making jams or desserts.

Olives are another versatile fruit that can be grown in pots or espaliers. They offer longevity, are slow growing, and their silvergrey foliage and gnarly trunk (with age) are attractive features in themselves. They come in different varieties, each with its own flavour and use. Garden Harvest olives are ideal for pickling, while Del Morocco olives are good for oil production and Picholine are known as the ‘cocktail olive.’ Olives can be grown as attractive topiary balls and even planted out as a hardy screen.

Bay leaves are a staple herb for many dishes, and they are easy to grow in pots or in the ground. Topiary techniques can be applied; shape your bay tree into a small ball or a pyramid and place it near your back door for easy access. Extremely hardy, frost and dry tolerant, Bays can also be grown into a dense screening hedge creating the perfect backdrop to your garden. Their leaves are also good for repelling insects and moths.

Other fruits that you can grow in your garden include Pomegranate, Feijoa and Quince. These exotics are nutritious and can add variety and interest to your landscape with foliage colour and decorative flowers prior to fruiting. With a regular prune they can be kept trimmed and compact.

You can also consider what is underfoot as well. Viola hederacea is an attractive native ground cover with edible green leaves. Its violet and white flowers bloom prolifically from spring to autumn and make a colourful addition to salads.

Prostate rosemary is a hardy filler for garden beds and sprigs can be snipped to flavour roast lamb. Flowers again can be clipped for decoration and aroma. Moving into the world of herbaceous shrubs opens so many options with Thyme, Sage, and Mint

Landscaping with edibles not only creates a rewarding beautiful garden but is environmentally friendly and economical. You can save money on groceries, reduce food waste, and enjoy fresh and organic produce from your own garden. WHY IS STEEL EDGING SO POPULAR?

Is there more to steel edging than just "the look"?

Steel garden edging has become one of the leading products available to design and better maintain a beautiful garden across a wide range of landscape styles.

It is the preferred choice of professional landscapers and designers, appearing at major garden shows across the country. It has been heavily featured at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show now for several years.

The weathering steel "corten" – rusty look has in fact become a timeless classic for landscapers world wide, with demand for the product exponentially increasing.

Steel garden edging is typically more durable and generally easier to install than alternative edging solutions. Wooden edging has for many years been the traditional choice but quality timber is now hard to source with lower quality timber prone to rotting and splitting. Plastic edging, the budget option, can work well as temporary solution however easily warps in the harsh Australian summer and can create environmental issues as it degrades.

Higher timber profiles are difficult to shape into elegant curves where steel edging excels in both curved and straight installations.

Mild steel plate is an option but difficult to work with while the prefabricated modular kits now available take the stress out of transport and installation. Most steel edging kit manufacturers provide at least a ten-year structural guarantee. Manufactured steel edging is flexible enough to shape into any design yet very solid once in place. It is easily installed by both professional landscapers and DIY renovators alike.

Hamilton Landscapes' award-winning residential landscaping in Mt Eliza is a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence. Despite the challenges posed by COVID lockdowns and concurrent construction of the house, this three-year endeavour harmoniously integrates the home and garden and boasts 550 m2 of stunning paving, mature planting, and architectural concrete features. Drainage solutions were expertly implemented, concealing drains flawlessly, and the plant layout and soil management were impeccable, impressing the judges.

This magnificent creation reflects Hamilton Landscapes' dedication to precision and meticulous attention to every detail. It rightfully earned a gold medal in Residential landscape construction, and now takes out the Award of Excellence across all residential categories as richly deserved recognition for a project that sets the highest of industry standards.

Landstruct's award-winning commercial landscaping project in Lake Pertobe Reserve, Warrnambool, has transformed the community's outdoor space, delighting both locals and tourists.

Exemplary craftsmanship shines through the precision concrete work and meticulous attention to detail, seamlessly integrating intricate cultural elements inspired by local first nations Mobs, whilst faithfully adhering to the Landscape Architectural drawings.

Overcoming immense challenges including COVID-related delays, distance issues, and water inundation, the team excelled. Despite site complexities, their expert management ensured precise drainage and adherence to design plans, crafting a vibrant, engaging space making this project a remarkable achievement in a challenging environment. Congratulations to Landstruct for delivering excellence in this regional endeavor.

Super Gardens' landscaping project at Latrobe University has received an Award of Excellence, for its impeccable attention to detail and innovative management.

Their integrated IT systems ensure clear communication and efficiency for both contractors and clients, a crucial component of their success. This robust reporting system and well-organised site structure impressed the judges, with auditing as a standout feature.

The healthy planting and plans for further replanting exhibited dedication to site upkeep. The meticulous turf spraying programs have achieved exceptional results in maintaining the landscape's aesthetic appeal, even amidst heavy foot traffic.

The Super Gardens team's exemplary work has deservedly earned them the Award of Excellence for Plants.

MINT Pool & Landscape Design’s Yarraville project is exceptional and Darin Bradbury and his team have set an incredibly high standard in documentation to handle a difficult site and brief to establish a creative and beautiful garden.

A blend of period & contemporary themes is well considered, augmenting the design aesthetic and functionality of the space, with material selection further enhancing the outcome and reflecting the architecture of the home. The existing conditions including a driveway through the middle and significant peppercorn tree, coupled with an extensive client brief was challenging but an outstanding result has been delivered despite these complexities.

For delivering excellence from documentation to implementation, the Award of Excellence for Design goes to MINT Pool & Landscape Design.

BOUTIQUE GARDENS

A showpiece of the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, the Boutique Garden Competition offers finalists an opportunity to showcase their design talents, push design boundaries, gain valuable industry experience and promote their business to all visitors at the Show.

Proudly presented by Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers, 5 finalists have been selected to present a space that wows show visitors.

These leading and emerging landscape garden designers are asked to prepare a brief that utilises a 5x5m space and showcases their intimate knowledge of the art of landscape design.

Often these gardens reflect the dream backyards of many modern Australians, and provide visitors with inspiration as to what could be achieved in their own homes.

There are a number of rules and regulations that must be adhered to when building these display gardens in the World Heritage listed space: for example the construction of the garden must not impact the ground or have any construction that will penetrate the soil.

This alone shows that entrants must be able to think outside the box, to think creatively and use original design elements to make their garden a standout at the Show.

The following pages celebrate the 2024 finalists of the Boutique Gardens competition.

Owned by Daniel Althaus, Althaus Landscape Designs are passionate about working closely with their clients to create a space that is unique and reflects who they are as well as their individual needs.

Craig and his team at Smart Landscapes are excited to be a finalist in the Boutique Gardens competition this year with their design of “Coastal Waves.”

“Coastal Waves” celebrates the many vibrant and textural plants indigenous to the Peninsula. Aside from being beautiful, these natives require less water, resulting in long-term cost savings and ultimately helping to preserve one of our most valuable resources, water. The species featured in our garden play an important role in creating habitats for many birds and other native wildlife, as well as being vital in reducing soil erosion.

Craig is thrilled to have their garden selected as one of the finalists and is most excited about “building a garden which connects to where we work and live on the Mornington Peninsula. Building the garden with the team will be a personal highlight for me.”

Paul Alexander Landscape is a finalist in the 2024 Boutique Garden competition, bringing their design of “Breath of Fresh Air” to the show. The garden design concept draws inspiration from an emerging architectural approach that accentuates the intersection between landscape and built environment. In response to this approach the design of the garden emphasises the natural environment, while architectural elements assume a secondary role as sculptural complements.

Congratulations to Alistair Kirkpatrick and Elliot Summers from Stratis Landscape Architects for taking out the coveted first place prize in the Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers Boutique Gardens Competition at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show! Congratulations also goes to build crew Better Landscapes for bringing the vision to life.

As a past finalist in the Boutique Garden competition Alistair has returned in 2023 alongside Elliot with another innovative boundary-pushing design, Karrikin Garden.

Their concept explored the regeneration and rejuvenation that fire can bring to the Australian landscape and celebrates a garden that derives its form from the rhythms and systems of our dynamic landscape.

BOUTIQUE GARDENS 2023 WINNERS

'Slant' by Riley Cooper Landscape Design & Horticulture was awarded second place in the Boutique Garden Competition for 2023.

Inspired by the undulating hills of where the Otways meets the western stony rises, 'Slant' looks at how we live within a sloping site without an overuse of traditional hardscape intervention.

The vibrant planting palette offers a variety of texture, foliage and flower, and creates a dynamic wilderness that gives year-long interest to the garden. Often gardens are designed to control and tame, however this garden is designed to complement itself in its wild, untamed structure.

Congratulations Riley and the team at Bays Edge Landscapes for executing the build on Riley's vision.

'Tectonic Fluidity' by Paul Pritchard Landscapes took out third place in the Boutique Gardens Competition and was constructed by the team at Adam Hompas Landscapes who executed Paul's vision with exceptional detail.

'Tectonic Fluidity' represents an exercise in tectonic fluidity and meditation, an opportunity to expand a small area through the use of varying levels, textures & movement. Sharp angles are displayed yet one is able to move seamlessly throughout the dynamic garden.

The design employs line, shadow and form as tools to expand the perception of space, whilst using the flora and water to bind a sense of tranquility and freedom.

GROWING THE INDUSTRY: CELEBRATING OUR APPRENTICES

The 2023 Victorian Landscape Awards, sponsored by Apprenticeships Victoria, were pleased to acknowledge two talented recipients with the Appentice of the Year award.

Apprentice of the Year: Horticulture, Parks & Gardens

Koreigh Conduit Botanic Horticulture

Botanic Horticulture nominated Koreigh for the outstanding work she performs and the great potential she shows in this industry, further stating that she is motivated, diligent and has an innate passion for horticulture. She is a true team player and respected by her colleagues. Her enthusiasm is evident in the pride taken in her work and the results she achieves in the gardens she maintains.

Koreigh’s TAFE teacher added that she shows a quiet determination to achieve excellence, works independently often conducting her own research, supports & assists others in their work, and is a fantastic ambassador for this industry.

All of these qualities shone through in her interview with the Judge who had no hesitation in naming Koreigh Apprentice of the Year in Horticulture.

Simon Reynolds

Nature's Best Landscapes

Since joining the team at Nature’s Best, Simon has become known for his hardworking, yet easy going attitude. He has a true authentic passion for the landscape industry, which is evident when he invests his time to learn about the design side of the business. This keen interest has impressed his employer as has his high-quality workmanship, often only expected from those more senior.

Simon continues to impress his teacher with his eagerness to improve and extend his landscaping skills by asking for theoretical workbooks to extend his knowledge. He demonstrates a clear ability to think independently and take charge of site setout processes and can work from a landscape plan and interpret engineering and architectural drawings.

In yet another hotly contested year which saw the judges battle to separate the nine nominees, Simon was chosen as a true rising talent in this industry to take out the Apprentice of the Year in Construction.

SO YOU WANT TO WORK IN LANDSCAPING?

A very important role Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers' (LVML) plays as an industry body is to raise awareness to the general public of industry standards and regulation requirements. That's why we insist our Members hold all the necessary qualifications in order to become a Master Landscaper.

LVML works with training providers by offering industry consultation on relevant skills and knowledge required for landscape courses and also provides support to student members enrolled in those courses.

Study Opportunities

Today, there is more scope for those interested in landscaping to gain a landscaping qualification or, for existing landscapers, designers and horticulturalists to undertake further study to update their qualifications and skill sets. There are many pathways at a wide range of training providers, including flexible delivery of courses and government assistance available.

Most landscape courses do not require any prerequisites, including past experience or training, and there are options for part time or full time study.

In some courses, students may be able to shorten the length of their chosen course by demonstrating skills acquired through their work, or prior qualifications obtained from formal studies or training.

Apprenticeship Pathway to Landscaping

The Certificate III in Landscape Construction qualification is a nationally endorsed Training Package and provides the most common entry to the industry.

Delivery: Most students undertake the three year full time course, attending their training provider one day a week and working with their registered employer, with whom they have a formal training agreement, four days a week. Students need to complete 10 Core Units and 7 Electives chosen by the training provider.

RTO's offer flexibility with varying start dates, on site assessments offered by some, and evening courses to fast track achieving a qualification.

Pathways: Inddition to the Certificate III in Landscape Construction, other pathways leading to a career in the Landscaping Industry delivered at TAFE Institutions in Victoria include:

• Certificate III in Landscape Construction

• Certificate IV, or Diploma in Horticulture

• Certificate IV, or Diploma in Landscape Design

• Certificate IV, or Diploma of Parks & Gardens Management

Landscape Gardeners are involved with the design, planning and maintenance; but usually only involving the plants in the space. Landscape Gardeners will plant, weed, cultivate, replace and harvest the plants. Gardening is an ongoing activity because gardens require tending and specialised care throughout the year.
