COMPACT TREES IN THE GARDEN
Looking to add height and interest to your garden without overwhelming your space? Compact trees offer all the beauty and function of larger trees in a more versatile form. Whether you’re after stunning seasonal color, a striking focal point, or a clever way to screen an area, here’s how to make the most of these small but mighty trees in your garden. ELOYSE EDWARDS | WARNERS NURSERIES
Ginkgo Biloba 'Lemonlime Spire'
Whether for framing views, adding interest, or creating privacy, the right tree can transform any garden.
While the word tree often brings to mind sprawling canopies in open landscapes, trees aren’t just for large spaces.
As outdoor living areas shrink, compact trees are rising in popularity—offering all the beauty and functionality of their larger counterparts in a more space-savvy package.
One standout is the Ginkgo biloba ‘Lemonlime Spire’, a fast-growing Maidenhair Tree that reaches just 5 metres high and 1 metre wide. Its upright shape makes it perfect for container gardens, courtyards, and narrow spaces, with minimal pruning required.
Unlike traditional screening plants, this variety is ideal for lining driveways and fence lines, providing a structured yet elegant look. Adding to its appeal, the Ginkgo’s slightly crinkled, limegreen leaves turn a glowing yellow in autumn, creating a stunning seasonal focal point. It’s no surprise that Ginkgo ‘Lemonlime Spire’ was named NGIV’s 2025 Tree of the Year.
For a burst of colour year-round, Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia sp.) is another compact option with plenty of character.
Throughout spring and summer, it erupts in vibrant pink, red, lilac, and white blooms. Come autumn, its glossy green leaves shift through shades of yellow, orange, and red before revealing a sculptural form clad in warm, mottled bark. With smaller cultivars like Acoma, Zuni, and Lipan, there’s a Crepe Myrtle for every garden size and style.
Creative Ways to Use Compact Trees
Choosing a naturally small cultivar isn’t the only way to introduce compact trees into the garden. Espalier and topiary are clever techniques for shaping (almost) any tree to fit your space.
Espalier involves training a tree to grow flat against a wall, making it perfect for decorative accents in tight spaces. This method is commonly used for fruit trees but works beautifully for ornamental varieties, too.
Topiary, the art of pruning trees into defined shapes, adds a sculptural element to gardens. Trees like Juniper (Juniperus chinensis), Bay Tree (Laurus nobilis), and Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) are ideal for topiary and can be shaped into columns, spirals, cones, and even cake stands.
Kept in pots, they create dynamic layers in courtyards and entrances, with the flexibility to move them as your space evolves.
Perfect Pairings for a Balanced Landscape
The key to integrating compact trees into any garden style is selecting the right companion plants.
Layering different textures and colours enhances the beauty of these trees while creating a cohesive landscape.
To highlight the warm-toned bark of Crepe Myrtle, pair it with silvery Stachys byzantina (Lamb’s Ears) or the vibrant green foliage of Pittosporum tobira ‘Miss Muffet’.
To accentuate the fresh green of Ginkgo ‘Lemonlime Spire’, plant it alongside the soft pink and white blooms of Hydrangea paniculata ‘Sundae Fraise’ or the deep greens of Osmanthus and Aucuba.
Perennials like Miscanthus, Salvia, and Agastache provide a graceful backdrop, emphasizing the strong form of topiary trees and Crepe Myrtle alike.
Groundcovers such as Ajuga and Persicaria add lushness and help blend layers together, creating a more seamless look.
Transform Your Space with Compact Trees
Compact trees are an easy and effective way to bring structure, beauty, and seasonal interest to any garden.
Whether used as striking focal points, elegant screens, or sculptural elements, these trees help turn outdoor areas into lush, inviting havens.
Visit your local garden centre for more inspiration or expert advice on choosing the perfect tree for your space.
LANDSCAPING VICTORIA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
CRAFTING A LIVING HISTORY
With a passion for creating landscapes that tell a story, Wayne De Klijn—founder of AQL Landscape Design—has spent nearly four decades shaping outdoor spaces across Victoria.
The Fern Garden at Ballarat Botanical Gardens is one of his most rewarding projects, blending history, sustainability, and thoughtful design. From repurposed century-old stone to a floating boardwalk that protects heritage trees, every detail tells a story. Join Wayne behind the scenes of this remarkable garden—one that honours the past while thriving in the present.
WAYNE DE KLIJN
The Fern Garden project is more than just a beautifully crafted space—it’s a testament to vision, dedication, and collaboration.
From the very start, it was an ambitious undertaking with high community expectations.
The Friends of Ballarat Botanical Gardens raised an incredible $200,000, with additional support from other funding bodies.
To be entrusted with bringing this vision to life was an honour.
Designed by Andrea Proctor’s landscape architecture firm, the garden features an elegant, unfurling fern frond motif in the forecourt’s permeable paving—a thoughtful nod to the original fern garden that once stood here.
Our role was to ensure that every element of the build stayed true to this vision, merging precision with creativity to create something truly special.
That early spark led me to work experience at a nursery, an apprenticeship, and eventually, at 21, founding AQL. Now, 39 years later, my passion for landscaping is as strong as ever. Every project is a learning experience, a chance to grow and contribute to something lasting.
Of course, projects like this don’t come without challenges.
Ballarat’s unpredictable weather and waterlogged site conditions kept us on our toes, but we found ways to work with, rather than against, the environment.
We repurposed stone dating back to 1889 for garden edging and features, ensuring sustainability while preserving a tangible connection to history. Protecting heritage-listed tree root zones was another major priority, so we built a steel boardwalk that “floats” above the ground, allowing visitors to explore without impacting the delicate root systems.
Horticultural expertise was critical to the garden’s success. We took great care in preparing the beds and tailoring planting zones to each species’ needs.
Collaboration between Andrea, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens team and AQL ensured that the plants not only thrived but created a space that visitors now admire and enjoy.
A standout feature of the garden is the irrigation system installed by Smart Water. With dripper lines, misters, and sprays, it delivers the right amount of moisture to each plant while integrating with a broader irrigation network planned for the entire Botanical Gardens. It’s a system that supports the long-term health of the garden while being water-efficient—a win for both the plants and the environment.
For me, working in a botanical garden is always inspiring, but what made this project even more rewarding was seeing the community’s appreciation for the space. Engaging with visitors, collaborating with passionate teams, and knowing that local businesses and suppliers were proud to be involved made this a truly fulfilling experience.
Reflecting on my journey in landscaping, I can trace it all back to my school holidays, working with a neighbour in the indoor plant industry.
Visit the Fern Garden
If you’re in Ballarat, I encourage you to visit the Fern Garden and experience it for yourself.
The Ballarat Botanical Gardens are open seven days, from 7.30 am to 6 pm (AEST) and until 9 pm during daylight savings.
Whether you’re a plant lover, a history enthusiast, or just looking for a peaceful escape, this garden is a special place worth exploring.
Happy gardening.
A beautiful space to sit and reflect at the fernery.

2024 VICTORIAN LANDSCAPE INDUSTRY AWARDS
LANDSCAPE OF THE YEAR
A garden that feels as if it has always belonged.
That’s the magic of Jane Jones Landscapes’ Landscape of the Year winner—a breathtaking coastal retreat that took home top honours, as judged by a panel of industry experts.
From the moment you step inside this award-winning Portsea property, the garden draws you in with its undulating terrain and lush greenery, carefully selected to thrive in the challenging coastal climate. A thoughtful mix of structured and freeflowing design creates a rich tapestry of texture and colour that softens the rugged surroundings.
Expansive lawns allow the landscape to breathe, while natural stone pathways and a stunning feature arbour add depth and structure. The real stars of the design, however, are the plants— each one thoughtfully placed to create movement and visual intrigue.
Cloud-pruned tea trees showcase their twisted, gnarled trunks, standing strong against the elements, while Cupressus and ornamental grasses enhance the lush, green-ongreen palette, adding both structure and resilience.
As you move through the space, the rear garden opens up to embrace the surrounding coastal environment, where wide stone steps and natural features blend effortlessly into the adjacent national park. It’s a seamless connection between designed beauty and untamed nature—one that the judges praised for its perfect balance of form, function, and harmony with the coastal setting.
A garden of this calibre doesn’t happen by chance. It’s a testament to expert craftsmanship, a deep understanding of planting design, and a commitment to creating landscapes that are as enduring as they are breathtaking.

THE BREAKUP GARDEN
Gardens tell stories—but few are as personal as The Breakup Garden. A space that embraces change, creativity, and the beauty of imbalance, this design challenges the idea that landscapes must be neat or predictable.
Created during a time of personal transformation, it captures the energy, rawness, and unexpected beauty that emerge in moments of change. Influenced by Kaz’s time in Europe’s renowned gardens—Great Dixter and Hermannshof—this space reimagines planting through a fresh, progressive lens, blending Australian natives with Asian species for an unexpected fusion of textures and tones.
There’s a wildness in the asymmetry, a freedom in its movement. Just as life evolves, so too does this garden—a living reflection of transition, resilience, and the art of letting go.
It’s a space that invites you to step away from order, lean into the unexpected, and discover the beauty of a garden that grows with change.
Some gardens are simply spaces to admire. Others pull you in, connect, and restore—and that’s exactly what Biophilia seeks to do.
Rooted in the idea that humans have an innate, biological need to connect with nature, this garden explores how the built and natural worlds can not only coexist but elevate one another.

THE NEW NATURE
Nature has always been our greatest teacher, but The New Nature challenges us to listen more closely. Inspired by the groundbreaking work of naturalist Tim Low, this garden is more than a landscape—it’s a call to action.
Created by Carla Perry and Michael Rochelle alongside their mentor, Alistair Kirkpatrick, the design explores the ability of plants to heal, regenerate, and transform. Through phytoremediation and hyperaccumulation, plants can restore polluted land, offering a future where human impact isn’t just minimised—it’s reversed.
Rather than mourning what’s been lost, The New Nature asks us to see the potential in every space, to embrace a world where people and plants collaborate for a sustainable future.
Michael’s design practice centers on creating gardens that are both attainable and environmentally responsible, while Carla’s expertise in softscaping ensures a seamless balance between beauty and function.
Together, they offer a vision that redefines our relationship with nature—one where we step back, pay attention, and let plants lead the way.

TIMELESS REPOSE
Some gardens invite admiration—Timeless Repose invites you to sink in, exhale, and stay a while.
Designed by Aaron Leslie and Kelsey Johns of Timeless Outdoors, this garden is a study in balance: a modern interpretation of heritage elements, where the rugged charm of old Melbourne bluestone meets the refined elegance of English tradition.
The result? A space that feels both classic and contemporary, structured yet effortlessly serene.
For Timeless Outdoors, the joy of landscaping comes from creating gardens that feel right— spaces that connect with people on an instinctive level. Their designs celebrate natural materials, authenticity, and a seamless flow that encourages relaxation.
Timeless Repose embodies this philosophy, reminding us that the best gardens aren’t just seen; they’re experienced.
So step in, settle down, and picture yourself with a glass of something crisp in hand. This is a space made for lingering.

Rooted in the landscapes of the Yarra Valley, Earthcore Landscapes is a family-run company dedicated to crafting outdoor spaces that feel deeply personal—gardens that resonate on an instinctive level. INNERSANCTUM
Some gardens are an escape—Innersanctum is a transformation.
Designed by Paul Pritchard, this breathtaking courtyard garden redefines tranquility, blending nature’s serenity with refined luxury.
A plunge pool, nestled within the lush greenery, serves as the heart of the space, inviting a moment of pause, reflection, and renewal. Every detail, from the carefully curated plant palette to the seamless connection between structure and softness, has been crafted to create a haven of peace in an otherwise fast-paced world.
With nearly two decades of experience designing outdoor spaces, Paul Pritchard is no stranger to crafting gardens that resonate on a deep level. His work speaks to the harmony between function and beauty, always with an intuitive understanding of how people move through and experience a space.
For Paul, being part of the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show is about more than competition— it’s about celebrating the artistry and skill of the industry. Innersanctum is a testament to that ethos, a space where calm prevails, water and foliage intertwine, and the outside world fades away.

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE
The Boutique Gardens Competition is more than a showcase—it’s a testament to the artistry and innovation shaping the landscaping industry.
While Innersanctum claimed first place, four other exceptional gardens left a lasting impression, each telling its own unique story.
Second Place: Breath of Fresh Air
Design: Paul Alexander Landscape
Construction: ACM OUTDOORS
A seamless fusion of structure and nature, Breath of Fresh Air redefined the relationship between landscape and architecture. Lush greenery took center stage, framed by delicate sculptural arches that enhanced rather than dominated the space. Thoughtfully designed to harmonize with its surroundings, this garden invited visitors to reconsider the boundaries between built and natural environments—a well-deserved second-place winner.
Third Place: Coastal Waves
Design & Construction: Smart Landscapes
Drawing inspiration from the rugged beauty of the Mornington Peninsula, Coastal Waves celebrated the resilience and elegance of indigenous plants. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the design highlighted their crucial role in water conservation, habitat creation, and erosion control. Rooted in sustainability yet effortlessly contemporary, this garden was a reminder that responsible design can be just as breathtaking as it is beneficial.
While only three gardens made the podium, every entry was a triumph in its own right.
Mother Ocean | Althaus Landscape Designs
Challenging traditional landscaping, Mother Ocean embraced a fluid, naturalistic aesthetic that echoed the rhythms of nature itself—a soulful space fostering deep environmental connection.
Open Air | Esjay Landscapes + Pools
A masterclass in small-space design, Open Air proved that even the most compact footprint can feel like an oasis. Flowing water, dappled light, and billowing plantings created a retreat made for relaxation and reconnection.
Each of these gardens showcased remarkable creativity, proving that even the smallest spaces can be transformed into something extraordinary. Congratulations to all the designers and landscapers—your work continues to inspire and elevate the industry.
NATURE’S CLIMATE CONTROL: SMART TREE PLACEMENT
The right trees in the right places can naturally cool your home in summer, warm it in winter, and reduce energy costs.
Hard surfaces like brick and concrete absorb heat, while trees provide shade, improve airflow, and protect against harsh winds.
Whether you’re blocking the afternoon sun, funnelling cooling breezes, or creating a natural windbreak, smart tree placement is a simple way to reduce energy bills and enhance year-round comfort.

Where Should You Plant Trees?
Before selecting trees, take note of how your home interacts with the elements. Observe where the sun hits throughout the day, where cooling summer breezes come from, and whether certain rooms get too hot.
Hard surfaces like paving and driveways can reflect heat into your home, so consider whether they need shading.
By understanding these natural patterns, you can make smarter planting choices that enhance comfort all year round.
Deciduous or Evergreen? The Right Tree for the Right Spot
Deciduous trees provide cooling shade in summer while shedding their leaves to let in winter sun. In contrast, evergreens maintain their foliage yearround, acting as natural windbreaks and privacy screens.
The best strategy? Use both in the right locations to regulate temperature and airflow efficiently.
North, East & West: Shade Where You Need It
North-facing windows get full sun in summer, so deciduous trees help block heat while allowing in winter light.
Try:
• Ginkgo biloba; a broad canopy for generous shade.
• Gleditsia ‘Sunburst’; dappled foliage that plays beautifully with changing light.
Paved areas absorb and reflect heat, so broad-canopy trees or soft ground covers help reduce heat buildup.
East- and west-facing windows need vertical shading—use deciduous trees, trellised vines, or external blinds.
South-Facing & Wind Protection
South-facing windows get little winter sun but still need summer shade. A mix of evergreens and deciduous trees is a great way to achieve this.
Tall evergreens to the southeast and southwest block harsh sun.
Deciduous trees near the house provide summer shade while allowing winter warmth.
Evergreens also deflect strong winds and direct cooling breezes indoors. Try:
• Syzygium ‘Hinterland Gold’; a lush, dense screen.
• Juniperus ‘Spartan’; strong vertical structure for smaller spaces.
• Evergreen Magnolia ‘Teddy Bear’ ™;
compact, glossy foliage with yearround appeal.
Creating a Natural Wind Barrier
For strong wind protection, layering trees and shrubs at different heights creates a multi-layered defence. Tall trees like Eucalyptus melliodora or Eucalyptus leucoxylon ‘Euky Dwarf’ provide high-level protection, while dense, lower-level plantings of Grevilleas and Banksias filter the wind effectively. Positioned to the west and northwest, these trees shield your home from winter storms while allowing airflow in summer.
Plan Before You Plant
Every tree grows into its own unique space, so think long-term before planting. Consider how large it will get, its proximity to structures, and potential maintenance needs. Some trees require regular pruning or shed significant leaves, so choose wisely to avoid unwanted upkeep.
By planning ahead, your trees will work with your home, not against it, creating a space that is comfortable, sustainable, and effortlessly beautiful year-round.

Led by Andrea & Anthony Uren, the team at Foliage Landscaping transformed the sloping Blairgowrie backyard into a seamless, mobilityfriendly oasis.
Every design choice balanced aesthetics with practicality, ensuring easy navigation while preserving the natural beauty of the space.
When Erica set out to find the right landscaper, she turned to Landscaping Victoria’s Find a Professional tool, which led her to Foliage Landscaping.
From the first consultation, Andrea and Anthony understood the vision— creating a space that was both beautiful and fully accessible.
At the heart of the redesign is a onelevel firepit area, where family and friends can gather without barriers. Frozen Blue marble in stretcher bond pattern pathways replaced lawn areas, reducing maintenance while introducing a relaxed coastal feel.
Corten steel planters retain the existing slope while providing the perfect foundation for layered plantings— offering instant privacy and allowing trees to grow into a lasting natural screen. A feature rock area, reimagined with durable steps, ensures that every level of the garden is inviting and accessible.
But it’s the attention to detail that makes this project shine. From fences painted in subtle hues to seamlessly hidden pool equipment, every element was carefully considered. Even the smallest additions—like an extra paved step for effortless wheelchair access— reflect the thoughtfulness behind the design.
Overcoming Challenges with Creative Solutions
Tight access through a narrow pedestrian door meant heavy machinery was out of the question. Instead, a small excavator shaped the land, while every piece of debris and material was transported by hand.
The team’s ingenuity ensured the steep slope was retained without disturbing existing structures, making the transformation possible without compromise. “We couldn’t achieve what we do without our team. Their contribution is invaluable—especially on this project,” Andrea says.
For Andrea, the most rewarding part was seeing the impact on Andrew. “This space was once inaccessible, and now he moves around it with ease and enjoyment. That’s what landscaping is about—it’s not just creating beautiful spaces, but spaces people can truly live in.”
A New Way to Live Outdoors
For Erica, the result was life-changing.
“We spend most of our time outdoors now,” she says. “My husband can finally access the garden and feel safe outside on his own. It’s private, safe, and attracts so much birdlife—it’s a joy to be in.”
Their experience with Foliage Landscaping was seamless. “They understood our needs, worked within our budget, and made sure every detail supported mobility without making the space feel clinical. We now have a sanctuary that feels as natural as it is functional.”
Thinking of Transforming Your Own Outdoor Space?
If you’re considering a similar project, Erica’s advice is simple: start with a clear vision, be open to expert advice, and invest in professional landscaping.
“Having the right team makes all the difference—not just in the design but in the entire experience.”

7 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR LANDSCAPER
BEFORE YOU SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE
A beautifully designed landscape isn’t just an aesthetic upgrade—it’s a major investment in your home’s value and liveability. But, with that investment comes risk, especially if you hire the wrong contractor.
LANDSCAPING VICTORIA
In Victoria, unlicensed and unqualified operators are all too common, and hiring one could leave you with costly mistakes, unfinished work, or even legal troubles.
So how do you make sure you’re hiring a professional, not a pretender?
Start with these must-ask questions.
1. Are you a Registered Building Practitioner?
For structural landscaping projects over $10,000, this is not optional— it’s the law. A Registered Building Practitioner has been assessed by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA), proving they have the experience, skills, and insurances required to complete the job to standard.
2. Can you provide Domestic Building Insurance if my project exceeds $16,000?
For larger projects, Domestic Building Insurance is a legal requirement and provides financial protection if the landscaper goes out of business or fails to complete the work. If they can’t offer this, walk away.
3. Do you have public liability and workers’ compensation insurance?
public liability insurance to cover damage to your property and workers’ compensation insurance to protect their team.
4. Can I see examples of your previous work and speak to past clients?
Quality landscapers should be proud to showcase their work. Ask for a portfolio, read online reviews, and if possible, speak to previous clients to hear about their experience firsthand.
5. Do you provide a detailed contract and clear payment schedule?
A professional landscaper will provide a clear, itemised contract that outlines the scope of work, materials, timelines, and costs. Be wary of anyone asking for large upfront payments without a proper agreement.
7. Are you a member of a professional association like Landscaping Victoria?
Membership in a respected industry association shows a commitment to ongoing education, ethical business practices, and industry standards.
Your home deserves more than a backyard makeover from a rogue trader.
By choosing a professional landscaper and asking the right questions, you’ll protect your investment, ensure highquality workmanship, and enjoy an outdoor space that stands the test of time.

6. What’s your process for dealing with unexpected issues or changes? Every project comes with surprises, from underground pipes to shifting client preferences. A reliable landscaper will have a process for addressing changes and will communicate openly about any additional costs or timeline adjustments.

With a strong vertical growth habit and a delicately creased leaf, this Maidenhair Tree is perfect for courtyard gardens, containers and stylish landscapes. The columnar form is well-suited to formal garden styles but is equally at home in mixed planting where it provides a contrasting vertical accent. FIVE SIMPLE STEPS FOR A HEALTHIER LAWN
As summer fades, now is the perfect time to give your lawn a little extra care. With cooler temperatures and active growth, autumn is the ideal season to strengthen your turf, tackle weeds, and set your lawn up for a lush, healthy winter. Follow these simple tips to keep your grass thriving year-round.
weeds before winter sets in. While your lawn’s growth slows down, many weeds continue to thrive. Removing them now—either by hand or with a suitable herbicide—prevents them from taking over during the colder months.
For stubborn weeds like Crab Grass, Winter Grass, Oxalis, and Crowfoot, applying a pre-emergent product (such as Oxafert) in late summer to early autumn can stop them before they sprout.
4. Give Your Lawn a Nutrient Boost
Applying a balanced fertiliser with micro-nutrients and trace elements will help replace what’s been lost over summer and give your lawn the strength it needs to stay healthy through winter.
Looking for an extra colour boost? A natural, organic-based colourant like ColourGuard can provide an instant green-up, extending your lawn’s vibrancy for a few extra weeks as temperatures drop.
5. Thinking About Laying New Turf? Now’s the Time!
If you’ve been considering installing a new lawn, autumn is ideal. The combination of milder temperatures and consistent moisture means your turf has plenty of time to establish strong roots before winter. Plus, you’ll use less water compared to laying turf in the heat of summer.
After a long summer of backyard cricket, barbecues, and lazy afternoons in the sun, your lawn might be looking
Compaction, dry patches, and weeds can creep in after months of heavy use, but the good news is that autumn is the best time to give your lawn a little TLC.
With cooler temperatures and stillactive grass growth, a few simple maintenance steps now can set your lawn up for a lush and healthy winter. Here’s what you need to know to keep your turf thriving through the seasons.
1. Mow Smarter, Not Harder
As the weather cools, your lawn will need less frequent mowing, but that doesn’t mean you can forget about it entirely. Raising your mower height in autumn helps maximize sunlight absorption and nutrient retention,
keeping your grass stronger for winter. A longer leaf also shades out weeds and helps your lawn hold its colour.
2. Test for Soil Compaction
After months of summer fun, compacted soil can limit water, oxygen, and nutrient flow to your lawn’s roots. An easy way to check? The screwdriver test. Simply push a long screwdriver into the ground—if it struggles to go in 100-150mm (4-6 inches), your soil may need aeration.
Aerating your lawn is easy: use a garden fork, aerator sandals, or a dedicated aerator to create small holes in the soil, allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate. This simple step encourages deep root growth and improves overall lawn health.
3. Get on Top of Weeds
Autumn is your last chance to tackle

WHY HOME RENOVATORS SHOULD THINK ABOUT LANDSCAPING FIRST—NOT LAST
When planning a dream home, renovators often focus on floor plans, facades, and interiors.
But what about the landscape—the spaces that frame the home and enhance its character?
Landscaping isn’t just about looks; it impacts functionality, sustainability, and long-term value. Here’s why it should be part of the plan from day one.
LANDSCAPING VICTORIA
Smarter Site Design
Starting with landscaping ensures the home works with the land, not against it. A well-planned outdoor space considers natural contours, sunlight patterns, and existing trees—elements that can influence layout, natural ventilation, and energy efficiency.
When home and landscape are designed in unison, indoor and outdoor spaces flow seamlessly, preventing costly changes down the track.
Built-in Privacy & Comfort
Strategic landscaping creates privacy without the need for towering fences, using trees and hedges to screen out neighbors while maintaining a natural feel.
Thoughtful plant placement can also enhance comfort—shade trees reduce indoor temperatures and energy costs, while windbreaks make outdoor areas more usable year-round.
Planning these elements early ensures they complement the home from the start.
A Lighter Environmental Footprint
Landscaping is key to minimising construction’s impact on the land. Early planning allows for erosion control, smart drainage solutions, and the protection of mature trees.
Features like permeable pathways, rain gardens, and native plantings support sustainability, while green roofs or vertical gardens work best when integrated into the home’s initial design—not as an afterthought.
Increased Property Value & Appeal
A home with a cohesive, established landscape is always more desirable. A well-designed garden enhances curb appeal, adds functional outdoor
spaces, and attracts buyers who appreciate seamless indoor-outdoor living.
Plus, when landscaping is planned from the outset, plants have time to mature, creating a lush, inviting setting from the moment the home is complete.
Avoiding Costly Fixes Later
Leaving landscaping until after construction can lead to expensive retrofits—repositioning pathways, installing irrigation, or removing trees to suit a design that didn’t account for them.
Planning ahead saves time, money, and stress, ensuring the entire property works harmoniously from day one.
A Home That’s Complete—Inside & Out
Landscaping isn’t an extra—it’s a vital part of home design.
By making it a priority from the beginning, renovators create more sustainable, functional, and visually stunning spaces that feel complete from the moment they’re finished.

More than a showcase of his work, Landprints offers thoughtful insights into creating harmonious, low-impact spaces that truly honor the land.
Trainer’s style is refreshingly organic, with elements that feel intentionally placed yet effortlessly unstructured.
From soft, textural plantings to gracefully curved paths, his landscapes embrace a simplicity that’s both striking and sustainable.
Landprints invites a new perspective on landscape design—using what’s available, blending each element seamlessly with the surroundings, and creating spaces that feel naturally whole.
Landscape and Garden Design Sketchbooks offers a captivating glimpse into the creative process of 37 designers, revealing how initial ideas take shape through handdrawn sketches.
Each page reflects a unique design approach, showcasing rough yet evocative lines that capture the rhythms and energy of garden design at its most raw and spontaneous.
For those who appreciate the art of hand-drawing, the book demonstrates how pencil, gouache, and pastels can translate ideas instantly from mind to page, illustrating a truly organic approach to design.
The book champions the value of hand-drawing while recognising the place of digital tools, celebrating how both methods can work together to inspire imaginative landscapes.
With a focus on authentic expression and hands-on creativity, Landscape and Garden Design Sketchbooks reaffirms the beauty of translating ideas directly to paper, making it an inspiring resource for designers and garden enthusiasts alike.
