As the year draws to close we give you a highlight of the recent Landscape Middle East Nature & Community Awards Abu Dhabi 2025 that we held on the 17th of November in the luxurious St Regis Hotel, Saadiyat Island Abu Dhabi, UAE. We brought together over 1200 industry professionals to recognize and honour outstanding achievements in landscape architecture, nature and community across the Middle East region.

A Pivotal Moment: The AUB Scholarship Launch

One of the evening’s most meaningful milestones was the launch of the Landscape Middle East Scholarship, developed in partnership with the American University of Beirut (AUB).

This initiative strengthens the pipeline of emerging talent by investing directly in education, research, and the next generation of landscape architects. It aligns seamlessly with the event’s long-term vision of advancing the profession across the region. The message resonated clearly through the room: the future matters and we are building it together.

Unmatched Scale, Energy, and Global Reach This was the largest edition in the event’s history. More than 1,200 professionals filled the conference halls, exhibition floor, and networking zones a dynamic mix of landscape architects, developers, urban planners, contractors, engineers, researchers, and government leaders.

As evening arrived, the momentum carried into a sold-out Gala Dinner with 720 guests, where the Awards ceremony honoured the finest achievements in landscape design and innovation.

The international reach was remarkable.

Delegates travelled from 18 countries stretching from Hong Kong and Singapore to the USA, Europe, the GCC, and beyond transforming the event into a truly global forum for knowledge exchange and futureshaping dialogue.

Over the day, 39 speakers and panelists explored how climate-resilient and regenerative landscapes are becoming essential frameworks for urban development, while digital tools, smart urbanism, and datadriven mapping are reshaping how cities are designed, managed, and experienced.

A Night of Celebration: The Gala Dinner & Industry Awards The day culminated in an unforgettable Gala Dinner, the largest ever hosted by the Landscape Middle East community. The atmosphere was electric as 720 guests gathered to honour the individuals and teams shaping the future of landscape architecture across the region.

This year’s ceremony recognised 67 industry awards, reflecting an impressive breadth of talent, ambition, and innovation. Projects were celebrated for leadership in climate-resilient and regenerative landscapes, cultural heritage preservation, community-focused public realms, and digitally responsive environments.

Excellence in inclusive design, accessibility, play, and social impact also took centre stage, together with achievements in circular systems, resource efficiency, and biodiversity restoration.

Visionary future landscapes from in-progress works to conceptual masterplans reinforced the region’s bold outlook, while waterscape and blue-green infrastructure projects demonstrated how water-sensitive design can redefine urban resilience. The Next-Gen Student Awards once again delivered some of the night’s most inspiring moments, reminding everyone of the strength and imagination of the emerging generation.

The Gala Dinner was far more than a celebration; it was a collective acknowledgement of progress, passion, and the shared belief that landscape architecture has a vital role in creating healthier, more resilient cities.

THE LUXURY AND UNIQUENESS OF RITMONIO SOLUTIONS FOR HOUSE O, IN DUBAI. archiSENSE studio oversaw the renovation of House o in Jumeirah 3, Dubai. The renovation radically transformed a dated, anonymous home into an elegant, contemporary residence.

The goal was to redefine each space to suit family life, creating a seamless flow between interior and exterior, maximizing natural light, and harmoniously defining shared and private areas.

The original house lacked character.

The redesign therefore focused on clean lines and a refined aesthetic, both on the exterior, thanks to an elegant, uniform, bright white plaster, and on the interior, where each room was transformed into a “living tableau.”

The mix between architecture and landscape stands out: a connected and coherent atmosphere is created by open-plan spaces and arched windows,

whose reflections evoke a sense of calm and intimacy. The new layout allows for full enjoyment of the surrounding landscape from the entire living area, while also offering functional access to the guest bedroom and playroom. On the ground floor, an open-plan kitchen with a central island overlooks the living room and garden.

Attention to detail is also evident in the finishes. In the wellness area, the Taormina series by Ritmonio in a Brushed Dark Bronze finish was chosen for its unique combination of style, gentle lines, and refined, versatile design. Its dark hue and brushed texture create an interesting, sophisticated contrast with the light colors and natural materials used.

The renovation of House o achieved its goal: transforming a dated residence into a modern, bright, and functional

Ph.D. How form and nature turn everyday landscapes into places people actually use Across the Middle East, landscape has moved from backdrop to behaviour-shaper. The most effective outdoor places (promenades, coastal parks, resort forecourts) share a common trait: their objects invite action before a single word is read. That invitation lives in the geometry itself.

Neuroscience-informed research shows a robust, crosscontext preference for continuous, curvilinear contours, with sharper, angular forms more likely to cue caution or avoidance. In public space this matters, because approach– avoidance decisions happen in seconds: a profile that “reads” as safe and rewarding can raise first-try use among people who do not identify as sporty.

The difference is not cosmetic. When contours flow, transitions are generous and grasping edges are obvious, the object broadcasts how to be used. Users intuit weightbearing points, hand paths, balance lines. This is the core of legibility: the form teaches the move. Studies suggest that curvature improves aesthetic judgment and willingness to approach; in a landscape crowded with signals, that edge is decisive for spontaneous, short bouts of movement. For Gulf cities and resorts, where many interactions happen during brief windows at sunrise and dusk, this “readability at a glance” converts footfall into activity without adding cognitive load.

If curvature lowers psychological barriers, biophilic design sustains attention and comfort once users engage. The “14 Patterns of Biophilic Design” offer a tested lexicon (direct nature, natural analogues, and “nature of the space”) that designers can translate into objects and micro-landscapes.

In practice this means biomorphic analogies (branching, ripples), mid-complexity textures that feel natural without visual noise, and spatial cues (prospect/refuge, mystery, subtle transitions of light) that regulate arousal and orient the body. When these cues are integrated into the object rather than added as decoration, the piece becomes both a small landmark and a reliable “use platform”.

Form also sets inclusion. In mixed-ability, multi-age contexts, a single object should hold three clearly visible challenge zones (low, medium, higher) so that parents, older adults and athletes can all succeed within the same footprint.

That gradient can be coded through height, reach distance, leverage and stance width rather than textual instructions.

The result is a choreography of micro-choices (“I’ll try the lower rail first… now the mid-step… now a slow balance line”) that keeps people moving for a few minutes without feeling they have “started a workout”. The object’s geometry, not signage, becomes the coach.

Why does all this matter for health? Because the context of movement amplifies its effects. Public-health guidance asks healthy adults to accumulate 150–300 minutes per week of moderate activity and include muscle-strengthening work on at least two days. Environmental-health research complements that with an exposure threshold: about 120 minutes per week in nature is associated with better selfreported health and wellbeing. When activity happens in nature, on a shaded waterfront, along a mangrove edge, the literature on green exercise finds higher enjoyment and affective benefits compared with comparable indoor settings. Enjoyment is not a soft metric; it predicts whether people come back tomorrow, and next week.

Designing for this synergy starts from a simple premise: treat form and setting as one system. Place sculptural objects where nature is already legible to the senses (breeze corridors, shade edges, water views) and let geometry do the talking. A curving “ribbon” that offers assisted push/pull at one end, balance in the middle and a low mobility pass at the other can host hundreds of successful micro-sessions per day. A continuous arch with generous radii and subtly varied grips teaches traction and support by sight alone. A

sinuous beam with slight camber and taper cues careful foot placement and torso rotation. Each of these pieces can be read instantly; each keeps the body in contact with a living context of sky, air, vegetation or water.

The biophilic layer does not need to be literal planting on every surface. Natural analogues (wave-like striations, branching junctions, dapple-light apertures) prime the same attentional pathways identified in the pattern literature.

Designers can stage the sequence so that a user moves from prospect (wide views) to refuge (partial overhead cover) across a three-move routine; or invite mystery by revealing a slightly harder option around a soft bend in plan. Small differences in radius, edge fillet and surface continuity reduce snags and hesitations that break flow. Over time, these choices add up to more minutes of motion per visit, more people “testing” a move as they pass, and more repeat engagements that convert curiosity into habit.

Not all “natural” settings are equal in the Gulf. Heat and glare can crush good intentions. Here, when and where are part of form: create shade and breeze exposure as continuations of the object’s geometry, rather than as afterthoughts. Cutouts

and overhangs that echo the main curvature can frame sky without admitting harsh sun; alignment with prevailing winds turns a static piece into a cool-feeling micro-climate. If the object is pleasant to touch and stand near at sunset, the routine will happen; if not, the best intentions will wait for October.

Measuring success should respect the same logic of simplicity. On the behaviour side, count unique firsttries per hour and repeats within the same visit; use onequestion mood/wellbeing checks post-use to capture affective lift. On the health side, report progress against the two communicable thresholds, active minutes and nature minutes. These are intelligible to policy makers and resort operators alike, and they map cleanly to the evidence base that underpins investment in active landscapes.

The payoff for focusing on form within nature is multiplicative.

Curvature and continuous contours lift approach behaviour and perceived beauty, unlocking the first step. Biophilic cues hold attention and lower stress, turning a glance into a three-move routine. The natural setting elevates enjoyment, increasing the chance of tomorrow’s repeat. In a region where outdoor life is compressed into precious daily windows, this chain, from geometry to biology to behaviour, is how green becomes gold.

As both a landscape architect and a mother of two, I often see public spaces through a dual lens: the professional eye that analyses form, function and materiality, and the parent who notices what actually captures a child’s attention. Recently, at a beautifully designed, highend playground, I watched my daughters ignore the equipment entirely. Instead, they gravitated toward the basics: leaves, sand, a bench, quickly turning them into props for their own stories. It made me question whether highly curated playgrounds unintentionally limit the very exploration they aim to support.

The conversation around “risk” in play is shifting. Designers are increasingly advocating for safe risk environments that allow climbing, hiding, experimenting and imagining, rather than tightly scripted experiences defined by manufactured equipment. This has led to a growing interest in playable landscapes, where nature and loose parts invite children to shape their own adventures.

Why Loose Parts and Nature-Based Play Matter Many contemporary playgrounds rely on synthetic surfaces and predictable structures. But children tend to seek out

the raw elements of nature: mud, water, trees, uneven ground.

Research supports this instinct. In one study, educators redesigned childcare outdoor areas with simple natural materials, sand, plants, and bamboo, guided by the Seven Cs design criteria. The outcomes were striking: children became more independent, creative and socially engaged, while signs of distress and antisocial behaviour dropped significantly.

Several projects demonstrate how powerful this approach can be. At Royal Park’s Nature Play in Melbourne, Indigenous stories shape the design, with a watercourse children can dam and release, echoing the seven seasons of Wurundjeri Country. In South Australia, Mukanthi Nature Playspace, by Peter Semple and Kaurna artist Allan Sumner, transforms an underused park into a landscape of exploration, cultural connection and environmental learning.

Inclusive, Sensory and Integrated Play True accessibility goes beyond ramps and compliance. It embraces sensory diversity, quiet zones, solo nooks and flexible spaces that support different ways of engaging. The Story Hut, for example, uses interactive audio to share tales linked to local wildlife. Sensors in the seating trigger stories from different perspectives, turning a simple shelter into an inclusive, place-based learning experience.

At the city scale, play is often confined to fenced zones, yet children naturally inhabit plazas, steps and streets as play spaces. Playable cities recognise this, weaving small invitations for spontaneous play into the urban fabric, encouraging joy and discovery outside traditional play areas.

Designing for Families, Not Only Children Many playgrounds overlook the adult experience: shade, comfortable seating, visibility, social spaces for caregivers.

Yet when adults feel at ease, children play longer and more freely. Intergenerational comfort strengthens community as much as it supports children’s development.

Toward Playable Landscapes It is time to move beyond the “curated playground” toward landscapes that are imaginative, culturally grounded, sensory-rich and open-ended. That means incorporating loose materials like mud, logs, water, and sand, alongside planting that encourages exploration. It also means working with Indigenous and local communities to root play in narrative, ecology and place.

As both a parent and a landscape architect, I believe the most successful play environments are those that spark curiosity, foster belonging and expand imagination. They are not confined to bubbles on a masterplan, but woven into the broader landscape. Playable landscapes invite children, and their caregivers, into environments that feel alive, welcoming and full of possibility.

In the contemporary world of industrial development, the identity of a factory is no longer formed solely by its production capacity, structural scale, or technological advancement.

Increasingly, the physical environment surrounding workspaces contributes to a brand’s perception its values, its aspirations, and its relationship with the people who animate it every day. At Karachi Steel Mills’ newly built office facility, the introduction of a thoughtful, modern landscape design has shaped not only a striking visual character but also a refreshing, nature-centric experience within an industrial context. The result is an office that communicates sophistication, ecological awareness, and a renewed sense of human comfort.

The landscape does far more than beautify the space; it builds a sense of harmony between the rigor of steel production and the softness of natural life an unexpected but powerful combination.

Through careful selection of materials, strategic plant placement, deliberate architectural shading, and the interplay of outdoorindoor transparency, the landscape elevates the factory’s corporate environment into a contemporary oasis. Each view whether from the walkway, the courtyard, or the office interior contributes to a narrative of balance between industry and nature.

The overhead geometric canopy, with its sharp lines and intricate truss pattern, casts dynamic shadows throughout the day. These shadows dance across the pavement and walls, adding a sense of visual movement that changes with the sun’s position. The result is a living environment one that breathes, shifts, and surprises. The landscape not only frames the architecture but actively participates in its aesthetic experience.

The paving stones, laid out in an intentionally irregular pattern, guide visitors naturally through the space. The texture and arrangement of these stones bring warmth, grounding the modern office with a sense of earthiness. They also serve as a subtle reminder of the interplay between precision the hallmark of steel manufacturing and the organic irregularity found in nature.

Creating a Sanctuary: Integrating Greenery Within an Industrial Context One of the most striking achievements of the landscape is the creation of a calm, green sanctuary within the heart of a large, industrial facility. Steel mills are typically associated with heavy machinery, noise, and vast expanses of concrete and metal.

A Vision of Modernity: First Impressions Through Landscape From the moment one approaches the office complex, the transformation brought by the landscape is unmistakable. Rows of palm trees rise from curated garden beds, creating vertical rhythm and establishing a sculptural presence against the corrugated façades of the buildings. The cluster of mature palms establishes a micro-garden courtyard that feels intimate yet open. Their placement is intentional: they form natural partitions, guide circulation, and provide shade, while also allowing for clear sightlines from inside the office. Large glass walls dissolve the barrier between inside and outside, allowing natural light to flood the offices and offering uninterrupted views of the greenery. This transparency enhances the interior’s sense of openness and makes the office feel more expansive and alive.

From the inside, one can see the shadows of palm fronds shifting gently against the corrugated walls a visual reminder of the natural world just beyond the glass. The interior design, with its warm leather upholstery, modern furniture, and soft textiles, echoes the tones and energy of the landscape. Decor pieces, such as the fresh flowers placed on tables, reinforce the connection to nature.

Grand Green Osaka Creating a City-Within-a-Park for Urban Community-Building By: GGN + Nikken Sekkei + Mitsubishi Jissho + Obayashi Corporation + Takenaka Corporation + SANAA Umekita Phase 2, located on the former site of the Osaka Station North Area Freight Yard, said to be the last area of prime real estate in the Kansai region, is a large-scale complex development with a total floor area of over 550,000 square meters. The approximately 9-hectare site, designated for urban development mainly at local government initiative, consists of a central urban park of 4.5 hectares and 4.6 hectares of private land. Strategically located, it connects to JR Osaka Station and the surrounding city. In collaboration with landscape design

firm GGN, the entire site was transformed into an integrated public park. Embankments create differences in elevation, transcending the boundaries of parkland and private property for a design to promote continuity of the area and vitality in its use.

The built program, ranging from densely arranged mixed use high-rise buildings on the private land to low-rise facilities and single-story park structures, are all designed with square floor

plans and arranged as a cohesive group clustered around the park. At the same time, variation in the angles and stacking of the building volumes give rise to spaces rich in greenery and alive with activity.

With its public space open to the surrounding districts and integrated with urban functions, this project will expand the concept of a public park and drive the creation of “Osaka Midori Life,” developing as a place where a diverse variety of people can freely gather and find value. Nikken Sekkei hope the urban development approach realized in Grand Green Osaka will serve as a model for the next generation of largescale mixed-use development.

Elevation Changes Create Diverse Gathering Places Embankments were created to gently introduce elevation changes between and within the north and south parts of the development. The variations in elevation not only integrate the site as a whole but also establish three principal “cores” in the park’s layout. These include the Great Lawn, which is the South Park’s multipurpose space facing onto JR Osaka Station; the

I PARK Step Plaza, which merges with the street that accommodates both pedestrian and vehicle traffic crossing between the north and south areas; and the North Park’s multifunctional natural space, Umekita Grove, which connects to the Shin Satoyama green area and Naka Shizen-no-Mori Park at Shin Umeda City. These “cores” are designed to transcend the boundaries separating roads, parkland, private land, and the surrounding neighborhoods, thereby enhancing the allure of the entire area, including that beyond the site itself.

South Park: Urban Oasis with Lawn, Water Feature, and Large Canopy Event Space The defining feature of South Park, which opens out onto JR Osaka Station, is its urban-environment-oriented layout. Its amenities are all connected and integrated within a skillfully landscaped topography. The Great Lawn teems with activity, alive with the sounds of children playing and the splashing of the water jets in the water plaza. When the flow of water stops, the water surface transforms into a mirror reflecting the sky and the surrounding landscape. The amphitheaterlike stepped seating along the embankment invites people of all ages to find a cozy spot to sit and linger, day or night. As people relax on the Great Lawn and by the fountains, a lively interplay emerges, where visitors can take in the scene while also being part of it, creating a vibrant, communal atmosphere and adding to the richness of the park’s various social spaces. The stepped terrain is sloped for more comfortable sitting, and the stairs are seamlessly connected vertically, with design elements that create an atmosphere of both sophistication and comfort. During both small and large events, the lawn and steps can be flexibly integrated to create a space that has been a favorite of visitors since the site opened to the public.

Experience in Sequence: A Symbolic Aerial Promenade “Inspiration Path” is an elevated promenade 4 meters wide and 350 meters long that winds through the site, connecting the South Park to the North Park and straddling the east-west axis road and the embankments. It curves over the top of the large canopy and passes through stands of trees, giving pedestrians a bird’s-eye view of the whole park and a chance to experience the diverse scenes of the city in sequence. The gold-colored railings, tilted 15 degrees outward and open to the sky, take on varied qualities, dappled in light filtering through the trees, sparkling in the sunshine, and reflecting the shadows of the buildings.

Step Plaza: Seamlessly Connecting the Road with the North and South Parks Embankments were built adjacent to the road that runs eastwest through the development. Stone benches stretching approximately 90 meters were arranged to create a continuous

open space that integrates the road—which would otherwise divide the development’s north and south areas— with the two parks. As people sit on the benches and observe passersby on the sidewalk, a lively dynamic of “seeing and being seen” is established between the parks and the road, as well as between the two parks themselves. The vibrant atmosphere of the park spills out onto the street, resulting in a seamless public space where the landscape is inseparable from the activity it inspires.

Above the road, the elevated “Inspiration Path” cuts across the space, dynamically connecting the North Park and the South Park. The choice of paving materials and street furnishings that reflect the integration with the two parks also helps to create a dynamic atmosphere and foster a “borderless” landscape.

Gateway to the Park: A Spiral Staircase with a Lantern-like Glow Gate Lantern serves as an entrance to the southern end of Umekita Park. The facility is a hub connecting various locations within Grand Green Osaka, both above and below ground; it is also the southern end of Inspiration Path. The structure includes a suspended spiral staircase 20 meters in diameter covered by a sloping roof elements designed to enhance visitors’ experience as they approach the park. Together with Inspiration Path, this landmark structure offers an immersive, spatially rich walking experience within Umekita Park.

North Park: A Dynamic Landscape of Stone Walls, Lush Greenery, and Waterside Spaces Set to open in 2027, North Park features a natural, multidimensional space called Umekita Grove, which connects to the Shin Satoyama green area at Shin Umeda City. This design integrates nature and architecture seamlessly. Dynamic stone walls are built into the site’s topography, transcending the boundaries between architecture and engineering with crafted details to create a striking landscape. A waterfall cascades from the top of the embankment into a pond that stretches across the area from east to west, while gentle, sculptural water features adorn the area around the southwestern entrance. The varied expressions of these waterscapes throughout the North Park create an inviting atmosphere of beauty and tranquility.

The landscaping, mainly consisting of deciduous trees, is designed to generate a healthy natural environment in the heart of the city. Varied expressions unfold across the seasons; the park is particularly impressive in autumn, when striking hues of red and yellow brighten the scene.

Between Architectural Volumes, Spaces for People From the development’s super-high-rise towers to its singlestory park structures, the architectural volumes are uniformly designed with square ground plans that open in all directions

and have no rear side. Designed for the fan-shaped site of the former National Railways freight station, these volumes fit seamlessly into the landscape. The buildings are arranged to allow for variation in their orientation, scales, and exteriors, rather than being laid out systematically. Additionally, stacking the volumes toward the deeper parts of the park allowed the buildings to be arranged in such a way that they, along with the neighboring Grand Front Osaka and Shin Umeda City complexes, surround the space of the park, forming a cohesive urban landscape. Through the shifting of building orientations and stacking methods, green areas and places for gathering or relaxing emerge between the volumes. The intention was to foster public space that blurs the boundaries between architecture and urban park a space full of greenery, vitality, and lively interaction, both indoors and outdoors.

Vast Underground Museum Optimizes Use of Park Space VS. is a museum with a total area of 3,500 square meters, of which approximately 3,000 square meters is underground, beneath the park. Two volumes one made of glass, the other of concrete represent the facility aboveground, while three more volumes are beneath ground level, leaving room aboveground to take maximum advantage of the site for the park. To ensure a soil depth of around 1.5 meters for plant growth, care was taken to align the height of the underground buildings with the park’s topography. The

underground foyer, created by the spaces between the five volumes, is illuminated not only by the natural light that enters the exhibition rooms but also from the light that filters down from the North Park waterfall (scheduled for completion in 2027). The result is a dynamic interplay of nuanced light and shadow both exciting and inspiring, despite the underground location. Additionally, the bridge that runs through the underground foyer serves as a direct link between the park, the exhibition space, and the main road, facilitating serendipitous encounters as visitors explore the area. The design of VS. represents an innovative approach to integrating a museum within a park setting.

Spiraling Greenery and Innovation The lower floors of the North Building are the site of Jam Base, the focal point of the innovation-driven vision for Phase 2 of the Umekita Project; the upper floors house a lifestyle hotel. The atrium incorporates the greenery of the park and the rooftop plantings into the interior space. The mixed-use building’s layered urban functions are stacked as a collective volume rising out of the adjacent North Park, creating an integrated public space. The volumes are stacked in a terraced arrangement, and piloti spaces, staircases, and rooftop gardens are situated among the volumes. This greenery is intended to blur the lines between interior and exterior, encouraging activity and interaction.

Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda: “Hacking” Osaka to Design a New Space Canopy by Hilton, a lifestyle brand based on the concept of “neighborhood,” is a boutique hotel rooted in the local environment, with a design and services that embrace the unique character of its surroundings. The design concept for the upper floors of the North Building is “hacking Osaka.” Through the lens of the Canopy brand, the space was designed by playfully “hacking” the regional identity and culture of Osaka, with the aim of creating a hotel that expresses a new side of this city known for its residents’ love of humor.

At Umekita, Carbon Absorption of a 9 ,700-Hectare Forest Pioneering Decarbonization Development Maximizing an Area’s Energy Potential Taking advantage of the relaxation of underground water extraction regulations on buildings through the National Strategic Special Zone system, Nikken Sekkei have implemented Japan’s first large-scale aquifer thermal energy storage system. This system stores waste heat from cooling equipment in the summer within a gravel layer 45–55 meters belowground; this is then used for heating in the winter. Conversely, waste heat generated in winter

is repurposed for summer cooling. This approach makes full use of the area’s geology, with high groundwater levels and thick gravel layers, to optimize energy efficiency. By reusing waste heat, the system not only reduces energy consumption but also mitigates heat island effects by limiting the amount of heat radiation released into the atmosphere. Additionally, a sewer heat utilization system, which uses the underground infrastructure running east and west underneath the sidewalk between the South Park and North Park, has been integrated as a heat source for hot water in the park’s facilities.
