Historic Highlights

• THE BATTLE OF BANNOCKBURN

You can witness a digitally re-created version of the famous Battle of Bannockburn from 1314 and see the statue of Robert the Bruce at an award-winning visitor centre. www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/ bannockburn

• Holy Rude Kirk

Stirling’s historic Burgh Kirk for 900 years. The only church still in active use, apart from Westminster Abbey, to have hosted a coronation. For King James VI of Scotland (later also James I of England) www.holyrude.org

• Stirling Old Town Jail

Since 1847, Stirling’s Old Town Jail had been a town prison, military detention barracks, sweetie factory and visitor attraction. Experience its colourful history for yourself.

www.oldtownjail.co.uk

• Antonine Wall

A turf fortification on stone foundations, built by the Romans across what is now the Central Belt of Scotland, between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. www.antoninewall.org

Palace Fortress

A favourite residence of Scottish kings and queens, Stirling Castle is quite magnificent. With the superbly restored great hall, palace, chapel royal and kitchens, you can get a real feel what it must have been like to have lived here when the Stuart monarchs were in residence. One of the more colourful courtiers during the reign of King James IV was John Damian, an Italian alchemist. A favourite of the king, he conducted experiments in the castle to discover the quintessence that would turn base metals into gold. He also tried to fly using wings made from eagle feathers, but didn’t get far and broke his leg!

Churches, Priories, and Cathedrals

Close to Stirling Castle you’ll discover one of Scotland’s finest medieval churches, the Church of the Holy Rude. Built in the 1400s, it survived the Protestant Reformation of 1560 virtually intact though all the statues and altars were demolished, and remained the principal church for the Burgh of Stirling. However life for its congregation became stricter. In 1621 David Hairt was fined by the Kirk Session for the ‘prophenation of the Sabbath’. He had confessed to playing golf in the park on a Sunday afternoon! Just to the north is the even earlier Dunblane Cathedral. A delightful church, full of surprises, it was built from 1233 onwards. Another historic church, founded in about 1238, is Inchmahome Priory, on an island in the Lake of Menteith. Reached by boat it is a most peaceful and entrancing place.

Battles, Bridges & Beheadings

This area is hugely significant in the Scottish Wars of Independence. William Wallace, having started his campaign against the English King Edward’s overlordship of Scotland in 1297 famously won the battle of Stirling Bridge against a much larger combined English & Welsh army.

Although the narrow wooden bridge has long since been replaced by a stone structure, this too is worth a visit; having been also used as a plague camp and partially blown up to stop the Jacobite advance in 1745. Its architect, the Duke of Albany met an untimely end in 1425 on the nearby beheading stone.

Campbell Castle Callendar House Stirling Old Town Jail is a top-rated independent visitor attraction in the heart of Stirling’s Old Town, winner of the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award – and located just a short walk from Stirling Castle. Hear the histories of our places of punishment –and the bloody, bizarre and sometimes baffling tales of the Burgh’s heroes and villains with our immersive tours.

History and heritage

For a truly immersive digital experience of medieval battle, take a trip to the Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre. It was here in 1314 that Robert the Bruce’s army defeated the English forces; a victory that changed the path of Scottish history and led to full independence in 1328.

The award-winning recreation of the battle allows you to experience medieval warfare from the standpoint of a knight, page or civilian.

Roman Frontier

At the furthest reaches of the Roman Empire, Ardoch Roman Fort, surrounded by successive rings of ramparts and ditches, is one of the best preserved and most impressive Roman forts in Britain. Built in around 80AD and reoccupied some 60 years later, it is just off the A822 at the north end of Braco village.

“The Greatest Railway Journey In The World”

Fort William to Mallaig Return

From Monday 3rd April until Friday 27th October

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.
