Fortresses, Castles and Tower Houses

No other part of Scotland has such a wealth and variety of castles. There is Kildrummy, Scotland’s most complete 13th century castle, and 12th century Duffus, one of the finest motte and bailey castles in the country.

At the edge of the Cairngorms are the Hanoverian garrison castles of Corgarff and Braemar. Perhaps the most beautiful of Aberdeenshire’s many castles is the tower house of Crathes with its painted ceilings and entrancing gardens. The most recently built castle is Balmoral, home to the Royal Family since 1852.

The Moray Motor Museum houses a superb collection of veteran, vintage, classic cars and motorbikes. Added to this are the model cars and automobilia which makes this a visit not to be missed. www. moraymotormuseum.org

Wild Boar, Wolves and Mythical Beasts

Among the most fascinating Pictish stones in the north east are the tall Sueno’s Stone, near Forres, with its battle scene, the Maiden Stone and Picardy Stone near Oldmeldrum, the Kinord Cross near Ballater and the Migvie Stone at Tarland.

Beautifully carved stones with bears, wolves, wild boar and mythical beasts, and free standing cross-slabs, are evidence that this north east part of Scotland was a stronghold of the Picts. A highly civilised people, they lived here between about 300 and 900AD.

After the Picts converted to Christianity in about 600AD they started to erect exquisite, tall, cross-slabs with intricate designs. These are usually found close to old churches where they had often been broken up and used as building material, only being rediscovered in the 1800s or later.

Unique Stone Circles

The North East is famous for its special stone circles, erected about 4000 years ago and found nowhere else in Britain. What sets them apart is that they all have one massive stone lying on its side, with two tall flanking stones.

The large stone is usually placed on the south-west side of the circle. It seems likely the circles served a ritual purpose and that the alignment of the stones related to the rising and setting of the moon at midsummer.

There are almost a hundred such stone circles sited across Aberdeenshire. Most have been robbed of their stones so that little remains of the actual circles. Among the best preserved of these fascinating places are: Easter Aquhorthies and Loanhead of Daviot. Check Aberdeenshire Council’s website for more information on the stone circles, Pictish sites and a historic churches trail.

The River Spey meanders its way through the Cairngorms National Park and into Moray on its 107 mile journey to the Moray Firth. It has had a massive influence on the geography, landscape, and the lifestyles of those that live here, but that influence is most keenly felt worldwide through the area’s famous Speyside whiskies.

Speyside, on the lower reaches of the River Spey, is the heartland of Scotland’s malt whisky industry. The 50 distilleries in this small area produce 60% of the country’s malt whisky.

Whisky lover or total newbie – everyone should visit a whisky distillery at least once for a genuine centuries old experience. Amongst the world-famous distilleries that you’ll discover here are The Glenlivet, Glen Grant, Glen Moray, Glenfiddich, Strathisla and The Macallan. A more recent addition is the small family owned Ballindalloch Distillery. It opened in 2014 and offers highly personal in-depth tours.

DID you know?

Distillery production runs seven days a week meaning that Glen Moray Distillery can craft 8.5 million litres of spirit a year!

One of Scotland’s few independently owned and managed distilleries, The GlenAllachie Distillery in Aberlour use their drive, passion, and desire to create a single malt whisky to be proud of; take a tour and hand-fill a bottle straight from the cask. Also well worth a visit are Aberlour Distillery and the Speyside Cooperage – makers and repairers of 150,000 oak casks per year for the local malt whisky industry.

Malt whisky distilleries offer a variety of behind-the-scenes tours. Here you’ll experience the processes that have to be gone through before a grain of barley is converted into a drop of malt whisky. Most distilleries have shops where you can buy a range of their single malts of varying ages.

For lovers of gin, this area also a lot to offer. Gordon Castle’s award-winning premium gin is handcrafted using botanicals grown in their very own Scottish Walled Garden. Located in the old cathedral city of Elgin, AVVA Gin is an artisanal, small batch craft gin, distilled slowly with a selected mix of Highland and Speyside botanicals. The Glenrinnes Distillery is the purpose-built home of Eight Lands Gin, using only the best organic ingredients to make their spirits. Proud to be Speyside’s only distillery to offer a single site gin and whisky visitor experience, at the Benromach Distillery in Forres you will find the fantastic Red Door Visitor Experience offering a unique opportunity to learn the secrets behind their handcrafted Red Door Gin.

For craft beer, in Lossiemouth you’ll find Windswept Brewing Co. who have a brewery tap room on site and offer tours and tastings if you book in advance. WooHa Brewing Co. don’t offer tours or tastings at their farm site near Kinloss, but this locally brewed beer is well worth trying if you find it in a shop or behind the bar during your stay here. The same can be said for Keith Brewing Co, named after the town they are from, with a great selection of beers and ales for you to keep an eye out for during your visit.

Serving a selection of home-baked cakes and locally made ice-cream, The Highlander Cafe Bus’s ingredients are, where possible, locally sourced from local farmers and bakers to bring the best of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire on your plate.

The upper deck offers seating for up to 30 people and you can enjoy the view of the beach and the city. Don’t be surprised if you see some dolphins on a nice day.

Distillery Tomatin

Tomatin is more than just another whisky distillery. Since 1897, our people have worked hard to build the Tomatin community that exists today and lies at the heart of everything we do. We produce quality single malt and blended Scotch whisky in an area of stunning natural beauty which has rich whisky making traditions dating back to the 1500s.

The Tomatin Distillery is located just 16 miles south of Inverness, Scotland and is home to Tomatin Single Malt, Cù Bòcan Single Malt and The Antiquary.

The Visitor Centre is open for guest tours and our retail store offers a wide selection of Tomatin Distillery whiskies and gifts. Hand fill your own bottle of one of our cask strength distillery exclusive whiskies and take it home as an extra special memento of your Tomatin Distillery experience.
