Selfridges has been able to hold the lead in department retailing due to offering such a wide range of items and brands in-store and online Selfridges is such a well-known store around the Oxford Street area and visited by so many people every year from all around the world And it was the most “Uber” place in 2021 which shows its popularity! Its clear people love to shop here as it has something for everyone no matter your budget, but it also has a lot of attractions and there's always something new to see in Selfridges Selfridges knows how to reach people and attract them into their stores, for example Selfridges is well known for their pop-ups with my personal favourite the Jacquemus 24/7 water-themed one, I felt it was done in such a cool and interesting way It was done in a 24/7 vending machine way but for handbags which was something that hadn’t been done in England before, the vending machine was open 24/7 where you were able to buy handbags and other Jacquemus products, but they were all blue, so as to fit the water theme It also featured other interactive bits like a changing room which had features inside, it gave you the sense of escapism as it doesn't feel like you ’ re shopping This particular theme spread about on TikTok quite a lot which essentially gave Selfridges free advertising which is a big advantage for them doing these pop-ups and making it worthwhile for them Selfridges within their store include something for everyone which could be a big factor to them holding onto lead in department retailing they offer so much for so many styles and age ranges and made it so everyone can have that experience with shopping at Selfridges and that sense of luxury, but it covers all budgets, for example if you spend £30 on a top or £1000 on a luxury coat the wrapping and final experience is the same The wide range of products helps as you can get so much from food in the luxury food court designer items handbags shoes, makeup, homeware, electronics, jewellery and toys By offering a wide selection of brands and products it brings so many people into the store as they have different interests and needs that why Selfridges attracts so many age ranges For example like the huge toy section on the top floor which attracts a lot younger age range who definitely wouldn’t see the fun in shopping for clothes Then the massive designer range brings in the more high-end people or people who want to get a designer item with a luxury experience as shopping in Selfridges just has a good vibe By having all of these sections kind of trick you into spending more money as you can always find something for someone or if you go in as a family there's something for everyone which would suit everyone's interests all in one shop so by having such a large selection of products that's what makes them such a leader in department retailing Visual Merchandising is something you can tell is a big factor for Selfridges as they have gone above and beyond compared to some stores on Oxford street there 'let's change the way we shop' big yellow sign on the corner of the building which makes them stand out and look more appealing to the other stores When stores look more appealing and inviting it’s a higher chance that customers will come inside and want to look around and spend money they want to know what is different to the way we shop! I personally like the way each brand is showed, especially the designer one ’ s, their layouts and showing off items is something I found interesting, as they matched the colour schemes to match the brand so well and make the items they are selling stand out Selfridges has many elements in the store and a massive sensory element to their store which could be a massive contributor to them being the leader in department retailing The DJs and music choices used in Selfridges to add to that element of sensory is interesting as if you go in the morning the music is always a lot softer and quieter unlike if you go a weekend or an evening the music is always a lot more upbeat and intense which is done through DJs as well which isn't you see so often in a store on Oxford Street So they use music and change it depending on the time and day and this is done to increase your mood without you realising and it's their way to hoping you spend more because of this Selfridges always has a pleasant smell to it, and this stems mainly from the perfume section but it’s a very pleasing sensory process to walk into If the store had an unpleasant smell it would put me off and probably avoid shopping there The wide choice of restaurants and bars to fit so many different age ranges and appetites, enjoy a glass of champagne or just a quick sandwich caters for all which is so appealing for many people as they can eat shop and drink all in one store! And again due to the higher end options it gives the shopper more a sense of luxury which enhances their experience Within Selfridges in the basement is a Formula 1 Car on display (with no engine may I add) which you can buy for a cool £200000 or on the top floor is a floor piano something for everyone The Formula 1 car was really interesting to see up close as there was also a Formula 1 display and next to it, they have a driving simulator, so you get to experience what driving a F1 car is really like Most people will never get a chance to drive one so the simulator is a great experience for people who have an interest in Formula 1 or just want to give it a go for fun It's also a great marketing tactic from Selfridges as it attracts Formula 1 fans to the store who may not tend to take an interest in Selfridges The piano floor attraction on the top floor is a good tactic to attract kids and families to the store as it's something kids would really enjoy, creating music from it and just overall playing with it or it's good if you just want to have a laugh with friends More entertainment experiences within Selfridges are the cinema and the workout studio the cinema gives you that sense of luxury again which so many aspire to want in their life so it's nice to experience for people The workout studio offers classes like soul cycle which is not what you expect when shopping but shows how much Selfridges are into wellness Escapist Experiences within Selfridges is their confidence coaching and empowerment sessions which they offer ranging from £30 to £150 which can help you shut off and become a better self Some more escapist experiences are offered in the beauty concierge they offer different services and treatments which can just help you shut off and take some time for yourself Educational Experiences within Selfridges are the library and the massive book selection which is based in the basement and the Selfridges history timeline where you can see and learn the history of Selfridges some find this interesting to see and learn about especially when you are in the shop These are all extraordinarily strong factors and reasons why Selfridges can hold that top spot when it comes to department retailing, they just have such a strong established brand which is liked by so many Selfridges have got their marketing on point by using platforms like Instagram and TikTok by using cool and creative ways to show what they have to offer or what's coming to store or what's hot now, by doing this they can reach new people and people which already love Selfridges but just didn't know a certain event and store was coming to Selfridges The social media team is also super creative and that can contribute to them becoming the leader in department retailing as it's all about advertising nowadays, especially on social media I believe Selfridges gives a good experience from personal experience as the staff have always been so helpful and I love the layout, it's inviting and it's not in your face that is overwhelming which I like I have never had a bad experience with the staff they have always been more than helpful I did some primary research through a few Instagram polls I did to see how big Selfridges is and asked question like have you ever visited Selfridges before to see actually how popular Selfridges is and see how many people actually have visited the store My first question was "have you ever visited Selfridges?" and 91% said yes, they had visited Selfridges which shows how popular Selfridges is because only very few people said they have never been to Selfridges before The next question is "have you ever purchased something from Selfridges" only 55% of people said yes so this shows the experience of Selfridges attracts people in and so many people just go enjoy the experience which Selfridges has to offer I next asked "do you like the experience Selfridges gives" and 82% said yes they do enjoy the experience Selfridge gives so the way they layout and the experience and vibe they give really has an effect on people making it such an enjoyable experience which is clearly a bit factor why they are so popular and so successful My last question is "how did you first hear about Selfridges" and most people said either through friends or social media so it shows that it attracts groups of people to the store to look around and potential to buy something but it’s just a great place to have some fun and a laugh with friends Also people said they found out through social media which shows Selfridges have got there marketing on point as not only they post about Selfridges but people on TikTok post about their experiences and new things to see on TikTok which reach new people and a different types of audiences which the Selfridges social media pages wouldn't reach It's clear that Selfridges is more than just shopping they make it more like an experience for you Their aim is to make you feel like you're not shopping when you ’ re in there and so many elements make it such an enjoyable experience it shows they really value their customers which is why they have been able to hold that lead in department retailing

90s GLAM YOUTH CULTURE

The 90s Glam Youth Culture was the best time in fashion as it was so clean and chic and I'm talking about as I feel some of it is coming back Like the clean and the more natural, no makeup looks. 90s glam screams sheer cotton tops, lace bras and silver shoes and these were all things which appeared over the 1990s 90s glam appeared sexy at times but it was always done and shown in a very elegant way and that’s why so many people liked this era as it never appeared as tacky or over the top The old school money look is what you can say the modern day 90s glam is as they have very similar characteristics within a certain style, as its definitely using the same style of clothes like laced and sheer tops which were pieces very popular in the 1990s glam era, you can associate Chanel as a brand with that old school money aesthetic which was a brand you would really associate with 90s glam. I think these are remarkably similar styles and eras because they both have that minimal richness vibe 90s glam had an extraordinarily rich minimalist feeling, that vibe has come back in New York fashion week with an American designer saying thought back to the 90s to get inspiration for her sw23 spring/summer collection New York Fashion Week for the sw23 spring/summer collections has an essence of a 90s glam comeback all over with designers wanting to catch the richness and minimalism that New York had in the 1990s, items which were really associated with 90s glam like sheer Cotton tops, lace bars and silver shoes were all pieces that popped up over New York fashion week to add to that rich minimal vibe which a lot of designers were going for, but it’s really nice to see an era from 20 years ago still popping up and influencing so much in fashion. Fashion weeks are key to any fashion era as its where the latest trends, popular styles and brands are show cased and its where you can get an idea of what's upcoming and what was is popular then, as designers benefit and thrive off inspirations of trends for their newest collections. Dresses were a massive part of that 90s glam as you see most of the 90s glam from events which happened, and designers designed dresses for celebrities to wear at these big events to show of them and the designer's work. People like the Spice Girls and Destiny's Child contributed to this as they were een as very glamorous and stylish girl groups in the 90s and had a substantial influence on fashion as they were

the trendsetters of the 90s Some of the things Spice girls brought into trend were platform shoes, chokers and slip dresses which have all been reoccurring trends ever since, but all of this is very 90s glam. The 90s is very linked with colour and the spice girls used a lot of colours in such a cool but glamorous way Even though as a girl band they all had their own identities and their style, with their unique styles and certain looks everyone remembers them for, where the Leopard print catsuits were Mel Bs thing and athleisure being Mel C's thing, platforms for Emma Bunton to streaky highlights for Geri Halliwell and LBDS for Victoria Beckham Even if you did not like the Spice Girls, everyone remembers their separate identities or their signature looks, Scary, Sporty, Baby, Posh and Ginger Spice. Destiny's Child which was another group that had a really big fashion impact but in a different way to the Spice Girls, the Spice Girls were a very glam y2k and created that y2k style Destiny's Child had that very futuristic look with a lot of shiny outgoing designs but all looking glam and flawless. The y2k style consists of shiny materials, trendy sneakers, pleated skirts, baguette bags, wide-leg jeans and colourful sunglasses Y2k is a style which has re-occurred in 2020 and that is down to Destiny Child which made it so popular in the 90s. Gwen Stefani had some influence on fashion in the 90s and contributed to 90s glam with her glamorous looks but she wasn't most known for that, she was most known for her more stylish pop punk with clashing prints, crop tops and her random accessories like ties, arm warmers and layered belts so she didn't have that generalised style in the 90s as hers was unique. It was so clear that music had an influential impact on fashion in the 90s and the people that created this music and the way they had expressed themselves through their music The 90s glam era was a very clean and glamorous time within fashion and this time, people like Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss really made it If 90s glam was a person it was Naomi Campbell because she was such a well-known figure in the 90s with her feline gaze, dynamic personality, and her amazing comebacks. Naomi wore very neutral colours but sometimes brought that bit of pop of colour time and time again, but she loved a sparkly number and that's when she really screams 90s

glam Then Kate Moss was very 90s glam with her most memorable moments being the LBD, The silver Dress, and the sweater vest The LBD moment was such a chic glam look with the ostrich feathers, sleeked hair, simple hoop earrings and subtle makeup. A very memorable look for Kate was at the De Beers/Versace "Diamonds and Forever" celebration from 1999 which just screamed 90s glam Chanel runway looks and Chanel as a brand was one of the main designer brands in the 90s going with that 90s glam throughout all their shows in the 90s. Chanel was all about the big gold chunky jewellery which I love, waist chains and pearls seemed to appear the most with Chanel and the waist chains are another past trend which is trending again, as waist chains are really something coming back into fashion. In the 90s Chanel picked up on and designed their tweed suits which have followed through and apart from their handbags, there are known for the iconic tweed suit I think Chanel was heavily connected with 90s glam as 90s glam had an extraordinarily rich and minimalist vibe which is definitely the vibe which Chanel has and what they aim for now and then through their runways, who they chose to model for them and the products they put out Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Chanel all worked well together as Chanel have used Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell a lot for their runway shows in the 90s as they were two of the biggest models then and were like the 90s versions of Bella Hadid as they had some a considerable influence on fashion Industry in general Elements like the royal family and movies even had an influential impact on 90s glam, like Princess Diana was such an influential person in the 90s and her fashion was iconic and definitely fitted in with 90s glam, with her iconic revenge dress as it had that clean and minimal look with that sense of richness which the 90s glam era thrived off The movie Clueless was such a big film in the 90s, it wasn't like the typical 90s glam, but it had the elements like pastel colours, blazers and the clean and tidy look which you would find in the 90s glam era 90s glam was such an inspirational time in fashion and is an era that needs to be remembered and I'm sure it will have an impact on so many more, trends will be reappearing from this era in fashion and keep creating perfect looks and styles

Olivia Rodrigo has grown so much throughout the last 2 years, I have followed her for a while not only because I enjoy hermusicbutIalsoreallylikeher style in fashion. She wears very pretty and light colours which complaint her and really suit her but this outfit which Olivia wore to the white house is definitely oneofmyfavourites.ThisChanel suit is vintage so you are unable to get the exact outfit anymore so I will be showing a more affordable version so you can getthelookwithOliviaRodrigo. It was a 1995 pink Chanel twin suit Olivia wore to the White House which gives the vibes of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde or Cher HorowitzinClueless.

Bella Hadid is one of the biggest models in fashion right now, she has that look which every brand wants. Bella has so much influence within fashion as her styleisseenbysomanyandshe has started so many trends and she's one of the most currentday trendsetters. This outfit is so simple but just perfect in so many ways but the biggest part about this outfit is the Chanel swimsuit which she has used as acasualeverydaypieceandthat isnotsomethingyouseesooften but definitely influenced or gave people the confidence to do and trythisstylethemselves.

Music from the 90s

90s Music Playlist by Eighteen Magazine

Music from the 90s was such an interesting time in music with so many great influences. The 10 songs I've picked all relate to 90s glam and they all had influences on fashion in their own ways. Destiny's Child and spice girls had a lot of influence on fashion and I explain more on how and why in my 90s youth culture page. Jennifer Lopez was a big part of music in the 90s with her song 'waiting for tonight', she was so clean through the way she looks and you can really link her to the 90s glam time but she was also known for making Latino culture and heritage such a more known thing in the media which inspires so many people, especially from the Latino culture. Spice Girls was one the biggest breakthrough girl bands in the 90s and they really expressed themselves through their music and styles which I've explained on my 90s glam page but their music is what made them what they are today and 'wannabe' was only one of there greatest hits they had so many more which I think actually shows how popular they were then as I don't think them seem that impressive now or as big due to being so many other girl groups now but then they were the biggest people in music in the 90s. Britney Spears had a big influence on fashion as she had that y2k style which has really came back into fashion now like the Donning Juicy Couture tracksuits, kitschy slogan tees, denim on denim and Von Dutch trucker hats which have all been popping and retrending recently. Throughout her time in the 90s, she definitely had a 90s glam look with the sparkly tops and the clean sort of makeup look with that shiny and glossy look which was so popular in the 90s. Britney's biggest influence in the 90s was crop tops and it is what she was known for crop tops are something that has never really fallen out of trend but she had such an influence on her music with major success and she has created such a big following for herself as well and has become an influence to people over the years. People like Madonna had their own style but still fitted into that 90s glam era by wearing navelbaring miniskirts, cone bras, or Gap jeans, Madonna has been a massive influence in fashion during the 90s. As an icon of popular culture, she has set fashion trends and boosted the careers of established as well as up-and-coming designers alongside her music and that's why I chose the song ' vogue ' for her because it was inspired by new york which links to 90s glam. This shows how music had such a key part of fashion as music was used to express themselves as artists but then fashion is how they could express the way they looked and dressed in such a cool and unique way.
