Donald Trump es un Life Rider. Sin duda. Y como vividor en el sentido más lastimoso y lastimado de la palabra ha conseguido votos. Pero hoy, para introducir nuestro tema LIFE RIDE, no queremos hablar de Trump, de su disentería emocional, de su protagonismo estúpido, que jamás hubieran votado los que han crecido creando universos en Minecraft, preferimos hablar de un poeta que se ha ido rodando por la vida con el sentimiento compartido de las palabras bien dichas. Preferimos hablar de Leonard Cohen y del dios de las pequeñas cosas explicadas durante largo tiempo, sin prisas. Fracaso y triunfo, una línea muy fina separa esas dos palabras y como dice Lister en la entrevista que publicamos en este número, solo los que han tenido en la cabeza la idea de vencer a alguien, han fracasado de antemano. Trump ha fracasado y Cohen ha vencido. Esa es la única lectura que podemos dar a estos dos sucesos que han puesto nuestro corazón triste, motivo por el cual enarbolamos una bandera negra, la de los Estados Unidos. La vida está hecha para vivirla rodando, para aprender de cada carretera, de cada camino, de cada pérdida y de cada éxito. Un sello marcado a fuego en el viaje es lo que comparten los protagonistas de esta edición de lamono, comenzando por Missy Prince, fotógrafa que tras estudiar filosofía y literatura cogió una cámara de fotos y comenzó un camino de ida a través del Mississippi, adentrándose sin tapujos en el interior de sus retratados y de sus historias sinceras. Igual que Gina Panarello, que dejó Boston para recorrer Estados Unidos en una furgoneta junto a su novio Kealan Shilling. Tras su viaje se instalaron en California; y sus miedos, ansiedades y otros fantasmas desaparecieron dejando paso a una confianza por lo bueno que está por llegar. Por su parte, Lucho Vidales, nos cuenta la vinculación de su último proyecto Why Ride con el homenaje a su amigo rider fallecido en el ataque terrorista al Teatro Bataclan de Paris. Sus fotografías nos acercan al abismo para estimularnos a vivir al día y en libertad, respetando al otro. Durante nuestro viaje a San Sebastian para asistir a la inauguración del Hurley Surf Club, tuvimos oportunidad de entrevistar al surfer John John Florence, actual campeón del mundo del WSL y la conclusión a la que llegamos tras hablar con él es sencilla: ha triunfado porque se divierte con lo que hace, según Florence obsesionarse provoca que este disfrute se pierda y por lo tanto también la esencia fundamental de una pasión. Bernard Testemale regentaba una exitosa empresa de quillas cuando un grave accidente en motocicleta cambió el rumbo de su vida para siempre. Tras un periodo inicial de ausencia de luz, la fotografía llegó para iluminar sus dos pasiones, el océano y la imagen. Big Wave Riders es una serie realizada con la antigua técnica del Colodión Húmedo donde lo que realmente importa es la mirada.

A su paso por Barcelona de la mano de Volcom y lamono, LISTER dejó claro que el arte, su arte, es impulsivo, pasional, caótico, intempestivo, irreverente y perpetuo, a pesar de su carácter efímero. Si hay alguien que represente el concepto RIDE LIFE ése es el “Banksy australiano” como suelen llamarlo, y Felipe Duarte, nuestro redactor, lo deja claro en la entrevista que acabó en experiencia artística a dúo por las paredes, persianas y carreteras de Barcelona. Ivory Serra empezó a patinar junto a su hermano a finales de los ochenta en San Francisco, en lo que se refiere al patín, ha rodado junto a todas las leyendas y ha fotografiado a muchas de ellas. Relajado, como una bajada hacia delante, sus fotos son la muestra del entusiasmo tras un click. El mismo que muestra cada día Mateusz Staniewski, que recorre las calles de Barcelona desde que se mudó con una cámara analógica colgada al cuello. Su objetivo: fotografiar a los personajes que llaman su atención y regalarles luego una copia impresa de la fotografía en la que aparecen. Esto mismo es lo que ha hecho durante cuatro años en el MACBA. El resultado de esta constancia es la que mostramos en este número. Y para acabar el gran Steve McCurry reflexiona en nuestras páginas sobre el poder de la lectura, bajo un gran árbol, en una gran playa paradisíaca o en el descanso desolador entre bomba y bomba en una guerra, un libro como el único objeto cotidiano, universal e imperecedero que de verdad puede transportarnos a una aventura, por muy lejana que sea.

Donald Trump could be a Life Rider. We have no doubts about it. And as the freeloader he is, in the most shameful sense of the word and actually bringing more shame to it, he has achieved the required votes. But today, to introduce our RIDE LIFE motto, we do not want to talk about Trump, his emotional dysentery or his stupid leadership… if only those geeks who have grown up creating virtual universes in Minecraft would have refrained to vote. Anyway… We rather talk about a poet who has left this world after strolling through life with a shared sentiment for well-spoken words. We rather talk about Leonard Cohen and the deity in charge of all the small things, those that deserve to be explained through long periods of time, with no hurry. Because life seems to be divided into failure and success and the fine line that separates those two words.

As Lister said in the interview we feature in this issue, only those who have thought about beating someone else, have already failed in the first place. Trump has failed and Cohen has won. That’s the only conclusion we can arrive to after these two recent events have saddened our hearts, leading us to hoist a black flag, America’s flag. Life is meant to be ridden, to learn along the road, review lessons in each curve, and evolve with each loss and each success. This is the leitmotif shared by all of our protagonists in this issue of lamono, starting with Missy Prince, a traveler who after studying literature and philosophy, grabbed a camera and started a journey delving within herself, traveling across the state of Mississippi, as she permeated the psyche of her subjects, exhuming sincere stories. Gina Panarello left her hometown, Boston, MA, to travel across the United States in a van with her boyfriend, Kealan Shilling. After this trip they decided to settle in California, where her fears, anxiety and ghosts have disappeared, leaving room for a new gained confidence enhanced by all the good things that are about to happen. Lucho Vidales tells us about the relationship there is between his most recent project and the homage he has done to his rider friend, who was present at the Bataclan Theatre during the terrorist attacks in Paris. His photographs push us closer to the abyss, awakening dormant stimuli inside us, making us live life fully and in freedom, respecting each other. During our visit to San Sebastian, we were present at the inauguration of the Hurley Surf Club, there we had the chance of talking with John John Florence, recently crowned as the best surfer of the year, and the conclusion to which we arrived is that he has triumphed because he has fun doing what he does best, riding waves. According to him, getting obsessed about something makes you lose the enjoyment and, with it, the essence that turns a discipline into a passion. Bernard Testemale used to run a successful fin company until he had a terrible motorcycle accident that changed his life. After a period of darkness, photography came into his life as light shinning through a window, and brought his two passions together, the ocean and the graphic arts. Big Wave Riders is a series created using the wet collodion technique, a process that has the power of endowing an image with a soul. During his sojourn in Barcelona, hand in hand with Volcom and lamono, LISTER clearly declared through his practice that his art is impulsive, passionate, chaotic, irreverent and perpetual, despite its ephemeral nature.

If there is someone that can represent the RIDE LIFE concept, that’s the ‘Australian Banksy’, as he has been labeled before, and our writer, Felipe Duarte, reveals this in an interview that ended in a nocturnal artistic experience that will remain on the walls, stoplights and transit signal boxes of Barcelona. Ivory Serra started skateboarding with his brother during the end of the eighties in San Francisco. Since then he has skated with many legends and photographed a bunch of them. Relaxed, as a downhill slope surrounded by palm trees, his photographs are the representation of all the enthusiasm that lies behind a click. The same enthusiasm present in Mateusz Staniewski’s work; hundreds of pictures he has been able to capture roaming around the streets of Barcelona, ever since he landed here with a camera hanging from his neck. His goal: to photograph the characters that capture his attention, to later surprise them by giving them a printed copy of the image they appear in. This is the process he has been carrying out for four years at the MACBA, and the result of this arduous labor is featured in this issue. To finish on a high note, we bring the works and words of a master, Steve McCurry, who ponders upon our pages about the power of reading, either if it is under a big tree in a park, lying on the beach or in the course of the uncomfortable silence there is between bombs during a war; books as the main representation of everyday life and the humanity we all share, a universal and everlasting symbol that can take us on an adventure, regardless how far it is.

Missy Prince tiene razón. La libertad es un concepto que a veces se extrae de situaciones demasiado obvias. Sí, soltarnos el pelo, correr libres por un campo y pisar el acelerador mientras bajas las ventanillas sirve para conseguirla, es lo fácil, lo literal. Pero la libertad no surge solamente de un brusco giro argumental en el que rompes con todo. La libertad es un estado mental que puedes invocar aquí y ahora, y esa es la verdadera épica. Como nos cuenta en esta entrevista, se trata de encontrar un lugar en la cotidianidad donde realmente puedas ser tú mismo. Y para ella, ese lugar es la fotografía. Una disciplina que le ha enseñado a ver lo de siempre con otros ojos y a profundizar en lo que tiene alrededor.

A vivir experiencias más allá de capturarlas. A conocer más que simplemente ver, y a sentir sin la necesidad de explicarlo con palabras. Y sobre todo, a no ser prisionera de su propia mente. La fotografía es su manera de sumergirse en historias ajenas y a través del resultado conocemos parte de la suya propia. Una historia que empieza en una carretera infinita en algún lugar de Mississippi. ¿Y el destino? Eso es lo de menos.

Missy Prince is absolutely right: freedom is a concept that is sometimes derived from situations that are far too obvious. Yes, letting our hair go, running through a field or stepping intently on the gas while you open the windows might be actions that help us feel this way, but they are simple and plain, and linger superficially upon the literal spectrum. But freedom is not something that arises solely due to an argumentative swerve through which we intend to disrupt everything. Freedom is a state of mind that you can evoke here and now, and that is the epic truth. As Missy affirms in this interview, it’s about finding your place within the mundane, where you can really be yourself. For her, that place is photography, a discipline that has taught her to see the ordinary through a different lens, delving in her surroundings, living experiences to the fullest, beyond simply capturing them. This practice has allowed her to understand what she sees, and to feel without the need of explaining it with words, but above all, it has helped her to not become a prisoner of her own mind. Photography is her way to immerge in other people’s stories, and thanks to the final result we are able to get to know a tinge of her own, a story that starts in an infinite road somewhere in Mississippi. Where to? It doesn’t matter.

Este número de la revista está basado en el concepto RIDE LIFE; en vivir el momento, libre y salvaje. ¿Alguna vez te has sentido realmente libre? Y de ser así, ¿cuándo fue y por qué? No puedo destacar un momento por encima de los demás. Por supuesto, el estar de viaje proporciona una sensación tremenda de libertad. Puede llegar a ser incluso la ejemplificación máxima de la misma, pero al mismo tiempo, es un ejemplo muy obvio. También aprecio cuando la sensación de libertad llega de manera inesperada durante, digamos, una caminata nocturna espontánea por la ciudad o mientras escribes tus pensamientos. Creo que es algo que está relacionado con romper la rutina.

Algunas personas creen que podemos conocer la personalidad de un fotógrafo al ver sus obras. ¿Qué rasgos de tu personalidad podemos ver en tu trabajo que nos ayuden a conocerte mejor como persona y artista? Tal vez, al ver mis obras, podréis afirmar que soy curiosa en cuanto a saber cómo la vive la gente, y que escucho más de lo que hablo. También puede ser que detectéis cierto sentido de sarcasmo.

Estudiaste filosofía y literatura. ¿Crees que esto te ha ayudado a contar historias a través de la fotografía? No creo que el haber estudiado filosofía y literatura me haya ayudado, pero mi interés en ellas, el cual me hizo estudiarlas, seguro que sí. Creo que ser una gran lectora también ha contribuido. Solía escribir historias, pero nunca encontré mi voz. Afortunadamente di con ella a través de la fotografía. La escritora frustrada en mí está constantemente descifrando cómo materializar las emociones en imágenes, en lugar de palabras.

Estoy segura de que mi inmersión en los libros ha desarrollado eso.

Por ejemplo, ciertos detalles sirven para desarrollar un tono. Los detalles que eliges vienen acompañados por un conjunto ambiguo de emociones con las cuales puedes trabajar. Yo diría que la fotografía se parece más a la poesía que a la prosa porque funciona a través de sugestiones, y no con descripciones literales. Sin tener palabras para explicarse, una foto es meramente evocativa. He ahí su poder.

En algún lugar leí una frase tuya que dice, “En cierta manera, la foto es lo menos importante”. En tu opinión, ¿qué es lo más importante del proceso? Oh, la experiencia es lo más importante, seguro.

Es decir, tener la foto como un premio o como un resultado artístico es algo maravilloso, pero en realidad es más una excusa para hacer algo, para investigar. En cuanto a los retratos, la cámara es como un pasaporte para adentrarse en la vida de otras personas. Sin ella tienes que ser un bicho raro para inmiscuirte. Y lo digo de una buena manera. Siempre he admirado a las personas que se involucran en situaciones al azar por ser tan abiertas. Yo no soy así. Creo que podría serlo si quisiese, pero simplemente no lo soy. Entonces, la cámara me lleva ahí, y lo que logro experimentar gracias a ella es probablemente una recompensa mayor que una foto, porque es algo que queda dentro de mí. Aún así, no siento que me adentre lo suficiente. Por ejemplo Stacey Kranitz pasa mucho tiempo en el entorno en el cual quiere entrar. Sigue siendo una intrusa, por decirlo de alguna manera, pero tiende a jugar más con esa barrera. En cuanto a la fotografía con sujetos no humanos, la cámara sigue siendo una excusa para ir más allá, para tomar esa carretera o mirar tras esa puerta. Y al final se

siente como si la experiencia fuese la mayor recompensa. Incluso iría más lejos afirmando que la experiencia es el verdadero arte.

Muchas de tus fotos las hiciste en tu casa, en Mississippi y alrededor de Tennessee. ¿Utilizas la fotografía como una manera de mantenerte conectada con tus raíces? No estoy segura. Aún me pregunto por qué sigo regresando. Tiene que ver en gran medida con la habilidad de explorar de adulto lugares por los cuales deambulaba de niña. Pero también tiene que ver con conectarse y descubrir un lugar muy rico, único y familiar, para crear un mundo que es en parte real y en parte inventado. Siento como si estuviese en un estado constante de descubrimiento donde todo es familiar. Hay cierto placer en revolcarme entre memoria y lo que es nuevo sin poder distinguir entre lo uno y lo otro. Puede haber algo relacionado con mis raíces en ello.

Ese solía ser uno de los principales objetivos de la fotografía, servir como prueba de haber vivido, y no solo de haber estado en cierto lugar. ¿Crees que el auge de las redes sociales nos ha llevado a desconectarnos de la realidad y a olvidarnos de vivir el momento? ¿Acaso estamos disfrutando el vivir en una realidad falsa? Las redes sociales son una bendición y una maldición. A menudo nos ciegan y no nos permiten ver lo que tenemos justo enfrente, pero al mismo tiempo es un mundo que en cierta manera está basado en la realidad, así que me cuesta trabajo llamarlas falsas. Engañosas es un término más acertado, ya que se basan en la fantasía narcisista que promueven. De hecho, he tenido intercambios significativos y creado relaciones, tanto artísticas como con personas, a través de ellas, por lo que no puedo condenarlas. Mis fotografías no tendrían el mismo seguimiento si no fuese por ellas. Sin embargo, aunque tienen tanto potencial, como herramienta su abuso es repugnante. Han expuesto nuestra constante necesidad de atención como seres humanos. ¿Acaso necesitamos tanto que nos validen los demás? ¿Nos encontramos tan incómodos con el momento presente que necesitamos vivirlo sobre una pantalla? Creo que resaltan el lado narcisista de todos nosotros.

Algunas personas lo llevan a extremos más excesivos que otras, y puede ser que esto esté relacionado directa y proporcionalmente con las realidades falsas y la falta de realización personal. No voy a decir que están mal. Simplemente están. Philip K Dick debe estar riéndose.

En tus imágenes podemos percibir cierta sensación de soledad. ¿Mientras estás de viaje disfrutas esos momentos de calma y reflexión más que aquellos que son intensos y extremos? Sí.

Aunque algunas veces la calma puede ser intensa.

Podemos afirmar que Missy Prince no es solo una fotógrafa, sino también una viajera. ¿Cuál nació primero? Evolucionaron juntas, pero diría que la viajera llegó primero porque, incluso de niña, ya era una exploradora. Vivía al lado de un bosque y solía caminar a menudo por ahí.

Las largas carreteras de asfalto son una constante en tus series fotográficas. ¿Podemos considerarlas como un símbolo de libertad? ¿Te refieres a las imágenes de carreteras rectas? Sí. Son un cliché, pero para mí son tan poderosas que me encanta retratarlas.

Especialmente porque es literalmente lo que ves cuando estás de

Siento como si estuviese en un estado constante de descubrimiento donde todo es familiar. Hay cierto placer en revolcarme entre memoria y lo que es nuevo sin poder distinguir entre lo uno y lo otro. Puede haber algo relacionado con mis raices en ello.

viaje en coche. Las fotos de carreteras representan estar de viaje y lo que quiera que eso significa para ti. Aquella foto de Robert Frank de una autopista vacía en la oscuridad nunca falla en despertar alguna emoción en mí. La idea de conducir a través de una carretera vacía es tan atrayente y significa más que solo libertad. Es estar dentro de tu propia mente. A aquellos que les gusta decir, ‘no hay nada allí afuera’, pueden saber lo que significa ser prisionero de tu propia mente. Este tipo de imágenes representan adentrarse en lo desconocido, sobre un lazo preestablecido que no tiene principio ni fin. Representan el hecho de ser insignificante dentro de un lugar enorme, representan contemplación, fantasía, anticipación, negación. Pero se ve tan jodidamente genial de una manera clásica. ¿Cuál es el lugar más hermoso o especial donde has estado? ¿Tienes alguna imagen de allí o simplemente capturaste el momento en tu memoria? Puedo hablarte de un lugar especial el cual recuerdo siempre. El misterioso y hermoso Lago Soda, cerca de Baker, California. Tengo algunas fotos de allí, pero aún debo tomar alguna que me haga realmente feliz. La Reserva Nacional de Mojave en general es muy hermosa. ¿Qué es lo más loco que te ha sucedido mientras viajabas? Mi chico y yo nos quedamos atascados en la caravana en un lago seco en Nevada, esto sucedió una tarde durante una tormenta. La caravana no se veía desde la carretera, por lo que los pocos coches que pasaban por ahí, no se detenían a ayudarnos. Pensé que estábamos perdidos, hasta que una amable familia de Westport, California, se detuvo y nos permitió utilizar su móvil para llamar a una grúa. La más cercana estaba en un pueblo a 65 kilómetros de distancia. El día anterior un

loco nos había seguido por todo Missouri, girando en cada curva que nosotros tomábamos, pasándose en rojo lo mismos semáforos que nosotros, y casi se choca varias veces por mantenerse detrás nuestro.

Finalmente lo perdimos al llegar a Kansas City, cuando nos detuvimos frente a un edificio gubernamental que tenía un guardia de seguridad. Por ese entonces estaban empezando a aparecer los teléfonos móviles, pero nosotros aún nos negábamos a tener uno. Después de ese viaje cambiamos de parecer.

Estados Unidos, en especial la costa oeste, tiene su propia iconografía: el desierto, los coches grandes, las luces de neón. ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de estos rasgos de América y qué otra parte del país te gustaría explorar? Me gusta el hecho de que en el oeste hay más espacios abiertos y salvajes que en el resto del país. A mí me encanta estar en la mitad de la nada. Me gustan los cambios constantes en el paisaje, y me llama la atención el instinto de supervivencia. Me cautiva pensar cómo sería vivir en medio de semejante aislamiento y me pregunto si yo podría hacerlo. Cada vez que estoy en un lugar así, surge en mí una ilusión, aunque sea temporal, de que la mayoría de la civilización no existe. Me gustaría pasar una temporada en Maine, en Virginia Occidental y en Texas Occidental. ¿Tienes alguna regla o lema que te ayude a mantenerte centrada y hacer las cosas? En cuanto a fotografía, no. Siempre espero ansiosa cada parte del proceso. Es lo que me mantiene en movimiento. No soy muy buena para hacer otras cosas. ¿Hacia dónde se dirige Missy Prince en la vida y en el trabajo? Tal vez hacia México.

I wouldn’t say any one moment tops the list. Of course, being on the road brings a tremendous sense of freedom. It is perhaps the ultimate freedom, but it is also a very obvious example. I also appreciate when a sense of freedom comes unexpectedly during, say, a spontaneous late night walk across town or while writing down thoughts. I think it is related to a break in routine.

Some people believe that we can see hints of the personality of a photographer by looking at their art. Which personality traits can we see of yourself that help us to know you as a person and an artist? You might be able to tell that I am curious about the way people live and I am more of a listener than a talker. Perhaps you can also detect a sense of sarcasm.

You studied philosophy and literature. Do you think this has helped you in anyway to tell stories through photography? I don’t think actually studying them has helped, but my interest in them, which made me want to study them, certainly has. I think reading in general over the years has helped me. I used to try to write stories, but I never really found my voice. Luckily, I have found one through photography.

The frustrated writer in me is figuring out how to put feelings into form, using images instead of words. I’m sure my immersion in books has informed that. For example, certain details give off a kind of tone.

The details you choose come with vague sets of emotions to work with.

I’d say photography is more like poetry than prose because it operates on suggestion rather than on literal description. Without words to explain it, a photo is merely evocative. That is its power, I think.

I’ve read somewhere the following quote of yours, ‘In a way, the photo is the least important part’. In your opinion, what’s the most important part of the process? Oh, the experience is more important, for sure. I mean, having the photo as a prize or art object is a wonderful thing, but it is more of an excuse to get into something, to dig deeper. Where portraits are concerned, the camera is a passport into other people’s lives. Without it you kind of have to be a freak to get that involved. I mean that in a good way. I’ve always admired the people I know who get into random situations because they are so open. I’m not really like that. I guess I could be if I really wanted to, but I just don’t operate that way. So the camera gets me there, and what I get to experience is probably a bigger reward than the photo, because it’s in me. I still don’t feel like I go deep enough, though. Someone like Stacey Kranitz, she really spends time in the worlds she enters. She’s still an outsider, but she plays more with the

barrier. Where non-human subjects are concerned, the camera is still an excuse to go a little deeper, to take that road or look behind that door. And in the end it feels like the experience is the deeper reward.

I would even go so far as to say the experience is the art.

A lot of your pictures were made back home, in Mississippi and around Tennessee. Do you use photography as a way to remain connected with your roots? I’m not sure about that. I’m still figuring out why I keep going back. It largely has to do with having the ability to explore as an adult places I wondered about as a child. But it also has to do with tapping into a very rich, unique and familiar place, to create a world that is partly real and partly made up. I feel like I am constantly discovering, but it is all so familiar. There is a pleasure in wading through the muck of memory and newness, and not always being able to tell the difference. There might be something about roots mixed up in that.

In that sense, photography used to serve as a proof of having lived, and not just as a proof of having been in a certain place, physically. Do you think that the rise of social media led us to disconnect from reality and forget about living the moment? Are we enjoying living in a fake reality? Social media are a blessing and a curse. They often blind us to what is right in front of us, but they are also a world that is somewhat based on reality, so I hesitate to call them fake. Deceptive is more like it, in terms of branding and narcissistic fantasy. I have actually had meaningful exchanges and created relationships, both personal and artistic, online, so I can’t completely bash them. My photography would not have a following if it weren’t for social media. However, while they have so much potential as a tool, their abuse is disgusting. They have exposed our neediness as humans. Do we need validation that badly? Are we so uncomfortable with the moment that we need the screen version? I think they bring out the narcissist in all of us. Some people take them to further extremes than others, and perhaps the extent is directly proportional to false realities and lack of fulfillment. I won’t say they are wrong. They just are. Philip K Dick is laughing.

In your images we can get a subtle sense of, not loneliness, but solitude. While you are on the road, do you enjoy these moments of calm and reflection more than the intense and extreme ones?

Yes. Though sometimes calm is also intense.

Missy Prince is not just a photographer, but a traveler too. Which was born first? They evolved together, but I’d have to say the traveler came first, because even as a child I was an explorer. I lived by some woods and walked around in them quite a bit.

The long and open concrete roads are a constant in your photographic series. Are they a symbol of freedom? Are you talking about the straightforward road shots? Yes. They are a cliché, but to me they are so powerful and I love taking pictures of them. Especially because it is literally what you see when you are on the road. The road shot is about being on the road and whatever that means for you.

That Robert Frank photo of the lonesome dark highway never fails to stir excitement in me. The thought of driving on a long empty road is so appealing and it means more than just freedom. It means being inside your own mind. Those who like to say, ‘there’s nothing out there’, might feel that it means being a prisoner of your own mind. It means going into the unknown, though on a prescribed ribbon of concrete that has a beginning and an end. It means being insignificant in a vast place. It’s about contemplation, fantasy, anticipation, denial…

But it also just looks so damn cool in a classic way.

Which is the most beautiful or special place that you have ever been to? Do you have a picture of it or you just captured the moment in your memory? I can tell you a special place off the top of my head. Eerie and beautiful Soda Lake near Baker, California.

I have a few photos of it, but I have yet to get one that truly makes me happy. The Mojave Preserve, in general, is very beautiful and special to me.

Which is the craziest anecdote you have from being on the road?

My boyfriend and I got our van stuck on the edge of a Nevada dry lake one early evening with a storm brewing. The van was out of sight from the road, which probably made the very occasional cars that passed not want to stop for us. I thought we were goners, but a

nice family from Westport, California, stopped and let us use their cell phone to get a tow from a town 40 miles away. The day before that, we had been followed by a crazy guy through Missouri, who took every turn we did, ran every red light we did, and nearly ran multiple cars off the interstate to stay on our tail. We finally lost him in Kansas City when we pulled up to a Government Building that had a security guard. It was a time when cell phones were just starting to pop up here and we were stubbornly holding out. After that trip we made the transition.

America, especially the west coast, has its own iconography: the desert, the big cars, the neon lights. What do you like the most about this part of America? Which other part of the country would you like to explore? I like that the west has more seemingly wild open spaces than the rest of the country. I love being in the middle of nowhere. I love the constantly changing land, and I’m interested in the survival factor. I’m fascinated by what it is like to live in such isolation and I wonder if I could do it. Being there at least gives me a temporary illusion that most of civilization does not exist. I would like to spend time in Maine, West Virginia and West Texas.

Do you have any self-imposed rule or motto that helps you focus and get things done? If you are talking about photography things, no. I look forward to every part of the process. It is what keeps me going. I’m not very good at getting other things done.

Where is Missy Prince riding towards in life and work? Maybe Mexico.

Recientemente Gina Panarello, de Boston, Massachussets, tomó una de las decisiones más importantes de su vida: puso en la maleta todas sus pertenencias y se mudó al otro lado del país con su novio, Kealan Shilling, de quien os presentamos su trabajo el año pasado a través de su libro On the Road, donde reúne una serie de fotografías que hizo armado con su cámara de 35mm. Esta pareja, además de compartir el amor por la fotografía, tenía un objetivo en común, recorrer todo Estados Unidos en coche para luego irse a vivir a California. Después de pasar unos años reconstruyendo su caravana y preparándose mentalmente para esta aventura, los dos hicieron su sueño realidad durante el verano; viajaron juntos al sur, al suroeste y a la costa oeste, en Los Ángeles. lamono tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con Panarello acerca de la belleza rural de Norteamérica, de los viajes en coche y de cómo es compartir una experiencia así con la persona a la que amas.

Recently Gina Panarello, of Boston, MA, made one of the biggest decisions of her life: she packed up everything and moved across the country with her boyfriend, Kealan Shilling. Last year we featured Kealan’s work thanks to his On the Road book, which comprises a series of photographs he shot armed with his 35mm camera. In addition to a shared love for photography, this couple had a common goal of road tripping across the United States to eventually move to California. After years of rebuilding their van and mentally preparing for the adventure, both accomplished their dream this summer. They traveled throughout the south, the southwest, and the west coast, finally settling in Los Angeles. lamono had the opportunity to talk to Panarello about the beauty of rural America, road tripping and what it’s like to share this beautiful experience with someone you love.

GINA PANARELLO La vida es un viaje por carretera

¿Por qué habéis escogido California como destino final de vuestro viaje? Mis padres condujeron a través del país durante su luna de miel, en los setenta, utilizando la caravana de mi padre. Así que siempre he tenido esta idea, lo genial que sería hacer lo mismo que ellos. Y resulta que conocí a un chico con un sueño y una visión similar. Desde que coincidí con Kealan en el 2011, él siempre ha estado viajando a California. Allí hay más oportunidades y es el lugar donde muchos de sus amigos viven. Yo vine en el 2006 para visitar a uno de mis mejores amigos y me encantó, pero nunca había tenido el coraje para irme de casa. Todo el viaje comenzó a tomar forma cuando empezamos a reparar la furgoneta y para ser honesta, yo sabía en mi corazón que necesitaba irme y encontrarme a mí misma. Veía las diapositivas del viaje de mis padres pocos días antes de partir y me inspiraban aún más, convenciéndome de que había tomado la decisión correcta. Me sentía muy contenida en Boston. Mi mente es bastante inusual y extraña, y allí no me sentía inspirada ni lo suficientemente libre para poder expresarme y vestirme como me gustaría, por lo que solía sentirme fuera de lugar. Solo necesitaba irme y ser libre, rodearme de personas tan extrañas como yo. Estilísticamente, todo es válido aquí en California, eso me gusta.

En tu artículo has mencionado que, antes de partir, los viajes te ocasionaban un poco de ansiedad. Durante esta travesía que llevaste a cabo, ¿cómo hiciste para permanecer calmada y centrada?

No era “un poco de ansiedad”. Fueron más bien diez años paralizada, luchando contra ataques de pánico, haciendo todo lo posible por aprender a controlarlos, reconocer qué los desencadenaba y cortar ciertas toxinas de mi vida. Tuve que trabajar mucho en mí misma, y la cura para esto que me ocasionaban los viajes, en realidad llegó cuando conocí a Kealan. Él me asustó al principio porque yo sabía que su espíritu libre también vivía dentro de mí, en algún lugar donde estaba aprisionado por mi pasado. Pero lo quería de vuelta. Ver sus fotografías y escuchar sus historias hizo que cayera en cuenta de lo mucho que me estaba perdiendo. Finalmente intenté la hipnoterapia y todo cambió para mí, fue increíble y estoy muy agradecida. Eso no quiere decir que esta condición ya haya desparecido. Seré honesta, la primera noche del viaje, cuando llegamos al Parque Asbury, tuve un ataque de pánico al caer en cuenta de lo que acababa de hacer, había hecho las maletas y dejado atrás todo lo que amo. Fue aterrador. Me fui a la furgoneta y medité, luego me dormí. El resto del viaje fue un remolino de paisajes, comida y olores diferentes. Cada pueblo que pasábamos era la experiencia de un estilo de vida completamente diferente. Creeríais que estando de viaje en coche te relajas, pero no había tiempo para ello, el ritmo fue frenético durante cinco semanas, absorbiendo todo lo que podíamos de lo que estábamos viviendo. No tuve tiempo para permitirle a mis pensamientos que me engañasen, haciéndome creer que algo estaba mal, porque todo era asombroso.

Cuando estás en una travesía así, experimentando, tu atención está enfocada cien por cien. Yo confío en el criterio de Kealan en la carretera, ya que él ha viajado mucho. El único momento en el cual estuve ansiosa fue en San Antonio, cuando debí luchar contra un resfriado veraniego a 40º centígrados y con una humedad del 80%. Mi cuerpo se estaba apagando y yo me sentía en el infierno sin poder salir. Sólo necesitaba aire acondicionado y líquidos.

Has dicho que en este viaje tuviste una experiencia muy cercana con la muerte. Estábais cruzando un puente y os detuvisteis para tomar una foto, cuando un camión de 18 ruedas casi os golpea. ¿En ese instante viste un hermoso momento para capturar y dejaste de lado la seguridad? Yo estaba conduciendo cuando esto sucedió.

Estábamos en el oeste de Texas, de camino a Marfa, atravesando este puente que tiene 60 metros de altura, uno que se ve en un film de Wes Anderson con un tren cruzándolo a través de un paisaje encantador. El puente atraviesa este hermoso cañón que tiene un río enorme, estábamos asombrados, y Kealan quería sacar una foto, por lo que nos detuvimos. Yo no vi el camión hasta el último segundo, cuando miré por el retrovisor derecho y vi al conductor gritando y girando bruscamente. Nunca olvidaré la expresión de su rostro. En realidad no puedo crear lo cerca que estuvimos de un desastre. Me cuesta trabajo tan solo pensarlo.

Además de esquivar camiones en la autopista, ¿cuál fue la parte más aterradora del viaje? Definitivamente la noche que fuimos al Parque Nacional Big Bend, en el oeste de Texas. Llegamos después del anochecer, como solíamos hacer, y ‘K’ averiguó que había una fuente de agua termal y quería ir. Mi intuición me decía, ‘absolutamente no’, e intenté convencerlo de no ir, pero Kealan tiene esta tendencia a romantizarlo todo con argumentos como, ‘¿pero no sería increíble sentarse en las aguas termales junto al Río Grande a ver las estrellas?’. Debéis entender que yo estoy completamente de acuerdo con pasar el rato en aguas termales bajo un hermoso cielo despejado… Con lo que no estaba de acuerdo era con el sinuoso camino polvoriento por el cual debíamos conducir alrededor de una montaña para llegar allí, donde los neumáticos pasaban a 30 centímetros del precipicio todo el tiempo, en la mitad de la nada, en la mitad de la noche, sin cobertura en caso de cualquier accidente. Yo estaba en el borde del mi asiento, sin respirar, sin parpadear, tensa y sudando. Estaba horrorizada cuando él lentamente condujo a un estacionamiento oscuro con un cartel que decía ‘robos frecuentes dentro de los coches’. En ese punto yo ya estaba muy reacia y quería irme, sabiendo lo cerca que estábamos de la frontera con México y los peligros latentes que allí existen. Estacionamos junto a un pequeño puente que llevaba a un camino absolutamente oscuro, y del otro lado del estacionamiento, encaramada en una pequeña colina, había una casa abandonada, donde yo estaba convencida que había humanos sicóticos viviendo que nos querían asesinar.

Todo lo que podía escuchar era la voz de mi hermana en mi cabeza diciéndome ‘eres una idiota’. Kealan rehusó no ir ver las aguas termales, y tras decirle que lo odiaba por obligarme a hacer esto, me bajé del coche, porque no podía dejarlo ir solo. Con mi linterna frontal puesta, agarré mi mazo en una mano y mi bastón metálico en la otra, mientras caminábamos por este sendero, cruzando otra casa abandonada entre los árboles –mis ojos y mi aliento se enfocaban en todo lo que nos rodeaba-. Finalmente oímos un arroyuelo, y cuando llegamos a la aguas termales caímos en cuenta de que debido a las lluvias recientes, el Río Grande se había desbordado, transformándolas en un baño de lodo. Lo gracioso es que yo estaba detrás Kealan, miré al cielo y le di gracias a Dios. Luego tuvimos que regresar por el mismo camino, y yo me giraba y miraba hacia

Al día siguiente, para rematar, nos enteramos de que en el área suele haber osos y pumas. ¿Cómo ha afectado este viaje tu relación con tu novio, Kealan Shilling? Kealan y yo hemos pasado por muchas cosas como pareja.

Justo antes de partir fue el momento más estresante de nuestra relación. Él estaba tan enfocado en la caravana y en estar seguro de que estuviera perfecta antes de salir, que pasó dos años muy exhaustivos, concentrado sólo en reconstruirla, y para mí, como su novia, fue agotador. Él también estaba agotado, pero nunca se rindió. A largo plazo, él creó lo que visualizó en su mente, y construyó un hermoso hogar donde podíamos vivir; él nunca se rinde con nada, y yo admiro eso muchísimo. Estar en la carretera, como todo el mundo dice, es una verdadera prueba para la relación. ‘K’ y yo casi nunca nos peleamos, y si lo hacemos, nos reconciliamos rápido y lo dejamos atrás. Creo que los dos estábamos nerviosos por embarcarnos en este viaje juntos, porque no sabíamos como era el otro en la carretera. Era una idea que discutimos y desarrollamos por tres años. Solo hubo una gran pelea, que en mi mente tenía que pasar, y luego todo estuvo bien. Vivimos juntos en la caravana en el desierto por tres meses, y en una gran ciudad durante el verano, sin

aire acondicionado. En esas condiciones cualquiera se molestaría.

Normalmente pasamos todos los días juntos, pero esto se potenció al pasar todo el día todos los días juntos, y para ser honesta, nunca hemos estado mejor. Nos vemos de una manera diferente, nos amamos a otro nivel. Adoramos las pequeñas cosas, nos burlamos del otro y reímos –más importante aún, exigimos el respeto del otro y compartimos opiniones y consejos cuando se trata de decisiones de vida y del trabajo- . Es mi mejor amigo y me acuesto junto a él todas las noches, muy agradecida y me conforta saber que él es la persona que está junto a mí.

Habéis atravesado el chaparral costero de California y también escalado en el desierto de Chihuahua en Nuevo México; en esta travesía experimentasteis una amplia variedad de ambientes y climas. ¿Cuál fue vuestro favorito para fotografiar y por qué? Tío, es una pregunta difícil. Si tuviese que escoger uno, diría que Nueva Orleans fue genial por su arquitectura y su gente; su cultura, la cual se mantiene muy pura, estaba por todas partes. Allí aún se puede sentir le energía vieja y clásica de la ciudad. Me arrepiento de no haber sacado más fotos. El parque nacional Big Bend también fue espectacular por sus paisajes y caminos sinuosos. Pasamos horas conduciendo a tra-

vés de ellos, tomando fotos. ¡Oh! Las cascadas que encontramos en Nashville y Texas también estuvieron guay. Hamilton Pool, Texas fue visualmente surrealista… ¡tenéis que ir!

A través del contacto directo que tuvisteis con las personas que conocisteis durante vuestro viaje, seguro que estuvisteis expuestos a algunas de las facetas de la “Cultura Americana”. En el pasado, las diferencias políticas en los Estados Unidos solían ser simplificadas por los medios como preferencias políticas por región.

Durante el tiempo que duró vuestra travesía, la tensión política dentro de las comunidades regionales sin duda aumentó, a medida que se acercaban las elecciones presidenciales. Partiendo desde vuestras interacciones con la gente, ¿qué habéis aprendido acerca de la composición social y política de este país? Vimos muchas pancartas a favor de Trump en el sur. Lo cual es difícil de entender puesto que Trump no es una persona apta para dirigir un país. En lo personal, me parece desconcertante que el pueblo americano le esté permitiendo a Trump convertir a nuestro país y a las elecciones en otro reality show, lleno de violencia, sexismo, racismo y odio en cualquier tipo de manifestación. Para ser honesta, no me involucro mucho en la política. Intento evitar este tipo de discusiones a toda costa. Lo que puedo decir de la situación actual de los Estados Unidos es que me entristece. Yo quiero que el pueblo americano trabaje unido. La gente en California está escribiendo “TRUMP” debajo de las señales de pare, así que dice “PARE TRUMP”, y también ha habido muchas campañas de “PRAY FOR AMERICA”. Esa es nuestra situación actual. Debemos rezar por América. Toda la situación es bastante inquietante.

mos hacer algo que sea valioso. Como individuos, debemos actuar ahora si queremos hacer algo grandioso. Ella creía en mí, y estoy segura de que si estuviera aquí, estaría sorprendida con las historias que ahora tengo para contar. Aproximadamente un mes después de que ella muriese, conocí a Kealan.

A partir de tu experiencia personal, ¿qué consejos le darías a una pareja que está pensando en hacer un viaje en coche? HACEDLO. Es la decisión más difícil que tomaréis, pero al menos lo habréis hecho. Mi hermana siempre me recordaba esto cuando estaba teniendo dudas o cuando las cosas se complicaban. Debéis estar seguros de hacerlo con alguien en quien confiéis y con quien tengáis una buena comunicación. La comunicación es lo más importante entre las personas, sin importar el tipo de relación. Es importante que sepáis a dónde vais, también recomiendo hablar con tantos locales como os sea posible. Es así como encontraréis las piscinas naturales, los mejores lugares para comer, y otros datos acerca del lugar. Si queréis encontrar gemas ocultas, debéis mirar SIEMPRE a los locales. Aseguraos de tomar tantas fotos como sea posible.

Incluso vídeos, así podéis recordar todo lo que habéis sentido en ese momento. También sugiero escribirlo todo, llevar un diario día a día para que os podáis acordar luego de lo que habéis hecho. Es bueno que toméis carreteras alternas, no siempre la principal, ya que normalmente ésta es aburrida y os podéis perder lo que realmente está pasando en el área por la cual estáis conduciendo. Hicimos 4,300 kilómetros de más por haber tomado caminos alternos, pero fue allí donde encontramos las verdaderas experiencias. Es genial acostarte en Malibú y despertarte con el sonido de las olas rompiendo junto a tu ventana, o ver el amanecer por encima del Gran Cañón, conduciendo por esas carreteras interminables con alguien a quien amas, es maravilloso.

El año pasado destacamos el trabajo de Kealan con un reportaje de diez páginas con fotos de sus viajes, y entre sus comentarios dijo, “Cada vez que viajamos, crecemos, absorbemos y aprendemos”. ¿Estás de acuerdo con esta afirmación? De ser así, ¿cómo se relaciona con tu experiencia personal? Estoy completamente de acuerdo. Hace algunos años vi un anuncio que decía, “Tu mente jamás podrá regresar a sus antiguas dimensiones una vez has experimentado algo nuevo”, y es algo que llevo conmigo a todas partes.

Mi mente se sentía estancada y necesitaba estimulación. Aquello me inspiró a salir a experimentar. Algún día quiero contar grandes historias de las cosas que he vivido. He crecido tanto desde que me fui de casa. He visto tantas maneras de vivir conduciendo a través del país. He aprendido mucho acerca de mí misma, de mi pareja. Al experimentar las vidas de otras personas me he dado cuenta de lo bendecida que he sido al tener la vida que he tenido. Siento que he crecido mucho en los últimos cinco años. Creo que todo empezó al perder a mi abuela. Me senté allí, en el cuarto de hospital, tomando su mano derecha cuando murió, mirándola, y eso incitó en mí una sensación de pánico en cuanto a la vida. Qué corta es, y cómo debe-

¿Tienes algún proyecto en camino? ¿Un nuevo viaje en carretera tal vez? He estado trabajando en una serie fotográfica por algunos años, y continuaré con ese proyecto hasta que sienta que la he completado, entonces saldrá a la luz. También estoy trabajando en algunas entrevistas a músicos en los cuales creo genuinamente. Me encanta sumergirme en la mente de los músicos, dado que estoy muy conectada con el proceso de hacer música. La fotografía, escribir, la música y la moda son mis pasiones, y creo que he sido muy negligente con lo que creo que debo hacer en la vida, que es cantar. He estado trabajando en ello. Los viajes por carretera siempre son algo que tengo en mente, especialmente gracias a mi pareja, Kealan. Hasta ahora nos estamos asentando en Los Ángeles, y dándole un descanso a la caravana. Queremos conducir por toda la costa oeste, pero nuestra meta principal es recorrer México. Él ha estado hablando de ello desde que empezó a arreglar la furgoneta… y yo iría con él a cualquier lugar.

What made both of you choose California as the destination for your road trip? My parents drove across the country for their honeymoon in the ‘70s in my Dad’s van. So I’ve always had this idea in my mind, of how cool it would be to do that like they did. Just so happens, I met a guy with a dream, a similar vision. Ever since I met Kealan in 2011, he’s always been moving back to California. There are more opportunities out here, and a lot of his close his friends are here. I came in 2006 to visit one of my best friends and really loved it, but never really had the balls to leave home. The whole trip came together when he started re-doing the van, and, to be honest, I knew in my heart I needed to get away for a while and find myself. I looked at my parents film slides from their trip just days before I left for the first time and it inspired me even more, reassuring me that I was making the right decision. I felt really suppressed in Boston. I have a weird, quirky mind and I wasn’t feeling inspired or able to express myself, I couldn’t wear what I want with out feeling out of place. I just needed to go be free, surround myself with people just as weird as I am. Stylistically, anything goes around here and I appreciate that.

In your article you mentioned that before the trip, traveling caused you some anxiety. During your trip, how did you manage to remain calm, cool, and collected? It wasn’t “some” anxiety… it was more like 10 crippling years of battling panic attacks and doing everything I could to learn how to manage when attacks would occur, recognize triggers, and cut certain toxicities out of my life. I had to do a lot of self-work, and curing the traveling thing really came to a head when I met Kealan. He scared me because I knew his free spirit existed inside of me, some place where it had been locked away due to my past. But I wanted it back. Seeing his photographs and hearing his stories made me realize how much I was missing. Finally, I tried hypnotherapy and everything turned around for me, it was incredible and I am so thankful. That doesn’t mean it’s gone. I’ll be honest, the first night of the trip, when we got to Asbury Park, I had a panic attack because I realized that I did it, I packed up and left literally everything that I loved. It was so scary. I went out into the van and meditated and went to bed. The rest of the trip was a whirlwind of sights, food, different scents. Each town we whizzed through was a

visual experience of a whole different way of life. You’d think on the road we would be relaxed, but we didn’t have time, we rallied for five weeks seeing as much as we could and absorbing it all. I didn’t have time to let my thoughts trick me into thinking something was wrong, cause everything was awesome. When you’re on the road experiencing, it seems to capture all of your attention. I trust Kealan’s judgment on the road, since he’s traveled so much. The only other time I got anxiety was in San Antonio, when I was battling a summer-flu in 103-degree temps with 80% humidity. My body was shutting down and I felt like I was actually in hell and couldn’t get out. I just needed air conditioning and liquids.

You mentioned that the closest you have been to death was actually during this trip, when you were slowing down on a bridge to take a photo and an 18-wheeler nearly rear-ended you. Was this a moment where you saw a beautiful image to capture and you suspended your concern for safety? I was driving when this happened.

We were in West Texas, on our way to Marfa, going over this amazing bridge at least 200ft high, one you can see in a Wes Anderson film, with a train ripping through a scenic landscape. It cuts across this

beautiful canyon with a massive river; we were in awe, and Kealan wanted to shoot a photo, so I slowed down. I didn’t even see the truck until the last second when I looked in my side mirror, right at the truck driver, who was screaming and swerving. I’ll never forget the expression on his face. I genuinely can’t believe how close of a disaster that could have been. It’s hard for me to even think about it.

Besides speeding 18-wheelers on the highway, what was the scariest part of your trip? Definitely the night we got to the Big Bend National Park in West Texas. We pulled-in after dark, as we always tend to do, and K had found out that there was a hot spring and wanted to go. My gut was saying, ‘absolutely not’, and I tried to fight the idea, but Kealan has a way of romanticizing things with words like, ‘but wouldn’t it be amazing to sit in a hot spring along the Rio Grande and look at the stars?!’. Now, you have to understand that I’m totally down for a hot spring under a clear beautiful sky. What I’m not down with is the winding dirt road we had to scale around a mountain, where the tires were a foot away from the drop-off the whole time, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, with no service in case of anything. I was on the edge of my seat,

not breathing, not blinking, just tense and sweating. I was horrified while he slowly drove us to a dark parking lot with a sign that read, ‘Frequent break-ins and stolen property out of the vehicles’. At that point I was very adamant and wanted to leave, knowing how close we were to the Mexican border and the knowledge of various border crossings and run-ins. We parked next to a small bridge that led into this pitch black path, and on the other side of the parking lot, perched on a hill, there was this abandoned house that I was convinced psychotic humans were living in and were going to murder us. All I could hear in my head was my sister’s voice saying, ‘you’re an idiot’. Kealan refused to not see this hot spring and after telling him that I hated him for doing this to me, I got out of the car because there was no way I was letting him go alone. With my headlamp on, clutching my mace in one hand and my steel baton in the other, we trekked down this path, passing another abandoned house in the trees. My eyes and breath were focused on every sense around me. We finally heard running water, and when we got to the hot spring we realized that the Rio had been flooded due to recent rains and was completely flowing in and turned the spring into a mud bath. Funny thing is I was behind him and stared up at the sky mouthing, ‘thank God’. Then we had to retrace the same walk through that path, looking behind myself every four steps. The next day, to top it off, we found out how many bears and mountain lions frequently roam that area.

How has the entirety of this trip impacted your relationship with your boyfriend, Kealan Shilling? Kealan and I have been through a lot as a couple. Right before we left was the most stressful time in our relationship. He was so focused on the van and making sure everything was perfect with it before we left. He spent two very focused, time consuming years on re-doing that van, and, as a girlfriend, it was exhausting. He was beyond exhausted, but he never gave up, ever. In the long run, he created what he saw in his mind and made a beautiful home for us to live in. He never gives up on anything he is working on and I admire that immensely. Being on the road, as they all say, is a true testament of your relationship. K and I rarely fight, and if we do it’s over shortly after, and we move on. I think that we were both nervous about going on this road trip cause we didn’t know each other on the road like that. It had been discussed and built up for three years. We only had one big blowout, which in my mind needed to happen, and then it was fine. We lived in the van together for 3 months in the desert, and in a major city during summer with no air conditioning. Anyone would get annoyed living in gnarly conditions like those. We usually spend every day together, but this was enhanced to: all day every day, and to be honest, we have never been stronger. We look at each other differently; we love each other on a whole other level. We adore the stupid things, we make fun of each other and laugh -most importantly, we ask and respect each other’s opinions and advice when it comes to life decisions, and work-. He’s my best friend and I lay next to him at night so thankful and relaxed he is the person next to me.

From breezing through the coastal chaparral of California to trekking the Chihuahan Desert of New Mexico, you went to and experienced a variety of environments and climates. Which one was your favorite to shoot in and why? Oh man, this is a hard one.

If I had to choose one, I’d say New Orleans was great because of the architecture and the people; the raw culture was all around us.

You could feel the old classic NOLA vibes. I regret not shooting more there. Big Bend was also amazing because of the vast landscape and winding roads. We spent hours driving those roads just shooting. Oh! The waterfalls we found in Nashville and Texas were dope. Hamilton Pool, Texas was visually so surreal… you guys gotta go!

Through direct contact with the people that you met during your trip, I’m sure you were exposed to some of the facets of “American Culture.” In the past, the media has simplified the political differences of the United States, labeling them as political preferences by region. During the time of your journey, it was a time of growing political tension within many regional communities, as the presidential election was coming into full swing. From your

interactions, what did you learn about the political and social composition of the USA? We noticed a lot of Trump signs in the south, which is difficult for me to comprehend, since Trump is not a person that should be running a country. Personally, it’s baffling that the American people are allowing Trump to turn our country and the election into another reality show, filled with violence, sexism, racism and all-around hatred. To be honest, I don’t do politics; I try to avoid discussion at all costs. What I will say about the United States’ current situation is that I am saddened inside. I want the American people to work together. People are stamping ‘TRUMP’ under the stop signs in California, so it says, ‘STOP TRUMP’, and there has also been a lot of ‘PRAY FOR AMERICA’ campaign signs up. That’s where we are. Pray for America. The whole situation is very unsettling.

Last year we featured a 10-page spread with some of Kealan’s travel photos, and in his commentary he said, ‘Anytime we travel, we grow, absorb and learn’. Would you agree with this statement?

If so, how is this related to your personal experience? I completely agree. A few years ago I saw something that said, ‘Your mind can never go back to its old dimensions once you’ve had a new experience’, and I’ve kept that with me at all time, my mind felt stagnant and I needed stimulation, it inspired me to get out and see. I want to be able to tell stories of great things I’ve done some day. I’ve grown so much since leaving home. I’ve seen many different ways of life driving across the country. I’ve learned about myself, my partner.

Experiencing other people’s lives has shown me how blessed I’ve been to have the life I grew up with. I feel like I’ve grown a lot in the past 5 years actually. I think it started with losing my grandmother. I sat there, in the hospital room, holding her hand right when she passed, and as I looked at her it ignited a sense of panic about life. How short it is. How we must do something that is valuable. We, as individuals, have to act now if we want to do something great. She believed in me, and I know, if she were here, she would be astonished with the stories I now have to tell. About a month after she passed, I met Kealan.

From your personal experience, what words of wisdom you would like to give to young couples looking to go on road trips?

DO IT. It’s the scariest decision you’ll ever make, but at least you’ll do it. My sister would always remind me of that when I was having doubts or when things got hard. Make sure you are leaving with someone you trust and can communicate with. Communication is the most important thing between people, in any kind of relationship. Know where you’re going and talk to as many locals as you can. That’s how we found all the swimming holes, the good places to eat and other facts about the area. If you want hidden gems, ALWAYS look at the locals. Make sure you shoot as many pictures as you can, even videos, so you can remember the senses you felt in that moment. I also suggest writing down what you did, day to day, so you can actually remember. And take side roads, alternate smaller highways. Main highways are boring and you miss out on what is really happening in the area you’re driving through. We put an extra 2,700 miles on the van taking side roads, but that’s where the true experience was. It’s pretty awesome to think of sleeping in Malibu, waking up to crashing waves outside my window, or watching the sunrise over the Grand Canyon, driving those endless roads with someone you love, it’s great.

Do you have any upcoming projects? A new road trip, maybe?

I’ve been working on a photo series for a few years now, and I will continue that project until I feel I have completed it, then it will be released. I’m working on interviews with some musicians I genuinely believe in. I love diving into a musician’s mind, since I am so connected to making music. Photography, writing, music, and fashion are my passions and I feel I’ve been very neglectful to what I believe I was made to do, which is singing. I’m working on that. Road trips are always in mind, especially with Kealan as my partner. We are just getting settled in L.A., and giving the van a bit of a rest. We want to drive up the West Coast, but the main goal is to go travel around Mexico. He has been talking about that since he started building the van… and I will go anywhere with him.

LUCHO VIDALES CONTRASTES EN EL ABISMO

Lucho nunca pensó en ser fotógrafo. Una desgracia y el azar pusieron una cámara en sus manos, y se agarró a ella con fuerza y gran destreza. Fotógrafo de deportes, apasionado del skate y el BMX, su último proyecto es personal y valiente, un homenaje a la muerte de un amigo fallecido en el Teatro Bataclan de París durante los ataques terroristas, y un canto a la vida. Fotografías que nos acercan al abismo para estimularnos e invitarnos a vivir al día, en libertad, respetando al otro. Un proyecto benéfico en el que predominan los contrastes entre la naturaleza colosal y el cemento. Un puente y una presa vacía, un salto al vacío para reflexionar y superar obstáculos.

Lucho never planned on becoming a photographer, a disgraceful circumstance and chance brought a camera to his hands, and he held on to it tightly and with great dexterity. As a sports photographer who is absolutely in love with his two passions, skateboarding and BMX, he presents to us his most recent project, which is intimate and courageous; a tribute to a friend who died at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris, during the terrorist attacks of November 2015, all and throughout, a eulogy of life. Through this photographs, Vidales aims to drag us closer to the abyss in order to stimulate and invite us to live life fully, in absolute freedom, respecting each other. A philanthropic project defined by the contrasts between nature and concrete, a jump into the void to ponder and overcome obstacles.

EN MOMENTOS DIFÍCILES, DEBES TENER LA FUERZA DE SEGUIR ADELANTE, DE NO BAJAR LOS BRAZOS Y APROVECHAR DE ALGÚN MODO ESTAS SITUACIONES, LAS CUALES NOS PONEN EN UN ESTADO MÁS SENSIBLE Y HACEN QUE PERCIBAMOS COSAS QUE DE OTRO MODO NO ADVERTÍAMOS.

Un momento de libertad plena en tu vida. Cuando dejé mi casa por primera vez.

Uno trabajando. Red Bull Ramparanoia en 2012. Eso fue un highlight de mi vida. Todavía me cuesta creer lo que fue estar en ese sitio. Un campo de piedra pómez que la erosión del viento y los agentes naturales convirtieron en un paraíso natural para montar en bici.

Podéis ver las fotos en mi web, es impresionante. ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta hacer? Mucho CrossFit para luego poder llenarme a helado y cheescakes. ¿Cómo entiendes la fotografía? Como parte de mi vida, el mejor regalo que he recibido. Como el hecho de percibir lo que ocurre a mi alrededor con todos los sentidos y en un estado de conciencia que me permite disfrutar de eso. La entiendo como mi felicidad, mi tristeza, mis pérdidas y mis recompensas. ¿Por qué eliges el blanco y negro para unas fotografías y el color para otras? Depende de lo que quiera transmitir. Soy muy fan de los dos, y dependiendo de cómo los utilice trato de generar diferentes sensaciones. En estas dos series de fotos que podemos ver aquí, las imágenes son totalmente diferentes. La serie de skate con Chris fue toda en blanco y negro, y sabíamos que sería así desde que hicimos las fotos. Por otro lado, las imágenes de Why Ride son todas a color. Sin embargo, ambas creo que comparten un sentimiento un poco melancólico y dramático, pero cada una a su manera. En el caso de Why Ride, los tonos desaturados y el contraste, no solo del color sino también de la naturaleza con el cemento, son los que ayudan a generar esto. ¿Cómo eliges las localizaciones? ¿Dónde están captadas las imágenes? Desde el inicio, lo más importante siempre fueron los spots en los que íbamos a tomar las fotos. Las presas y puentes a los que fuimos están entre Málaga y Granada, al sur de España. Martin Postigo (rider) vive allí, y gracias a él fuimos buscando los lugares por GoogleMaps. Él fue personalmente a conocer y comprobar varios de los spots para asegurarse de que todo estuviese bien. ¿Qué quieren transmitir esos paisajes? Creo que el objetivo es intentar hacernos sentir pequeños y posicionarnos en un sitio colosal. Provocar una cierta búsqueda por parte del espectador para que se pueda tomar su tiempo en contemplar los detalles, siendo la acción uno de ellos. ¿Qué proceso sigues cuando estás trabajando? Intento estar lo más preparado posible. Reflexionar y estudiar lo que sea que me toque fotografiar. Ya sea un atleta o algún deporte que nunca antes haya fotografiado.

Aprender cuáles son los mejores momentos de cada deporte. También intento que haya una buena comunicación con el cliente para saber qué es lo que busca.

¿Qué cambió el 13 de noviembre con el ataque terrorista en el Bataclan y el fallecimiento de Mathias Dymarski y su novia? A nivel personal lo que cambió fue el fin de nuestro proyecto. Pero lo que sucedió ese día no tiene perdón ni explicación. Muchas veces me revuelve el estómago ver como puede haber tanto odio entre nosotros. Y como el ser humano es causante de estas tragedias y muchas otras. Lo que cambió fue su vida. Ya no están entre familia y amigos. Fueron a un concierto como cualquiera de nosotros, y no volvieron nunca a casa. ¿Cómo cambió el enfoque del proyecto? El enfoque del proyecto cambió cuando en uno de los spots en los que Martin Postigo y Mathias habían estado trabajando juntos, Martin dejó un mensaje a Mathias en una de las paredes de la presa. Me di cuenta de que él le estaba rindiendo homenaje a su amigo a través de nuestro proyecto, y de pronto todos pasamos a ser pequeñas piezas de algo mucho más grande. ¿Crees que en los momentos difíciles la creatividad y el ingenio florecen con más fuerza? Fue algo que comencé a preguntarme durante este proyecto. En general la respuesta es sí, pero tiene mucho que ver con el carácter de cada persona. Debes tener la fuerza de seguir adelante, de no bajar los brazos y aprovechar de algún modo estas situaciones, las cuáles nos ponen en un estado más sensible y hacen que percibamos cosas que de otro modo no advertiríamos. Conozco personas que en circunstancias críticas empezaron a pintar, y ahora son increíbles artistas. Otras comenzaron a escribir, y yo agarré por primera vez una cámara en circunstancias parecidas. De algún modo, estas situaciones generan una búsqueda personal de cómo canalizar nuestros sentimientos o aclarar nuestros pensamientos. Los acontecimientos que van pasando en nuestras vidas nos van marcando, y definen nuestra personalidad. Nunca pensé que iba a ser fotógrafo. Y a pesar de que haya sido a través de una desgracia, no puedo estar más agradecido por haber descubierto la fotografía. ¿Qué se podrá ver en la exposición que haréis en Barcelona el próximo noviembre? En la expo de Why Ride Project se podrán ver las imágenes finales del proyecto. Será a partir del 17 de Noviembre en La Milagrosa, una tienda que está montada dentro de una antigua fábrica de velas del 1800’s, y que cuenta con un espacio en la parte baja donde montaremos la muestra y proyectaremos un vídeo. Nuestro objetivo es que sea una experiencia, no solo una muestra de fotos. Queremos lograr que las personas que vengan formen parte de ella, y que todos podamos colaborar.

Tell us about a moment in your life when you experienced absolute freedom. When I left home for the first time.

And on a professional level. At the Red Bull Ramparanoia 2012. That has been one of the main highlights in my life. It’s still hard to believe what it was to be there; a field made out of pumice, which through time turned into a natural paradise to cycle, thanks to the erosion, the wind and other natural factors. You can see all the photos on my website, it was awesome.

What is your favorite pastime? Doing a lot of CrossFit so I can eat all the ice cream and cheesecakes I want.

How do you understand photography? Photography is a huge part of my life, the best gift I’ve been endowed with. It’s the process through which I perceive everything that happens around me, employing all my senses, in a state of consciousness that allows me to enjoy it. I understand photography as happiness, sadness, losses and rewards.

Why do you shoot sometimes in black and white and others, in color? It depends on what I’m trying to convey. I really like shooting in both, and depending on how I use them, I aim to provoke certain sensations. In these two series we can appreciate images that are completely different. The series with Chris was shot entirely in black and white, and we knew we were going to do this since the beginning. On the other hand, the images of Why Ride are all in color. Nonetheless, I think both series share the same sentiment, which is a little bit melancholic and dramatic, each one in its own characteristic way. In Why Ride, we achieved this by using desaturated color tones and focusing on the contrast, not only of shades, but as well between nature and cement.

How do you usually choose the locations? Where did you shoot these two series? Since the beginning, one of the most important things we had to determine was the spot where we were going to shoot. The dams and the bridges that you can see in the photos are located between Malaga and Granada, in the south of Spain.

Martin Postigo (rider) lives there, and it was thanks to him that we started checking these places through GoogleMaps. Later on, he visited them personally, to corroborate they were all right.

What are you trying to convey through these landscapes? I think the main objective was to make the viewer feel smaller by positioning him or her in a colossal place, provoking an internal examination that would lead to the contemplation of details, where the action is one of them.

Explain to us the process you carry out when you are working. I always strive to be as prepared as I can. I reflect and study upon whatever it is that I have to photograph, either if it is an athlete o a certain sport that I have never worked with before. It’s important to learn which are the best moments within each sport. I also try

to develop a good communication with the client, to get to know what he or she is expecting.

What changed on November 13th, 2015, during the terrorist attack at the Bataclan Theatre, where Mathias Dymarski and his girlfriend passed away?

On a personal level, their passing away represented the end of our project. But what happened that day has no possible forgiveness or explanation. Many times, it sickens me the amount of hate there is amongst us, and how the human race can be responsible for tragedies like this and many others. What actually changed that day were the lives of Mathias and his girlfriend, since they are no longer with their family and friends. They decided to go to a concert, like any of us could do, to never return.

How did the project change due to this tragic circumstance? The project changed when, in one of the selected spots where Martin and Mathias were working together, Martin left a message for Mathias written on a wall of the dam. I realized that he was paying a tribute to his friend through our project, and suddenly we all became participating pieces of something way bigger than us.

Do you think that during hard times, creativity and ingenuity blossom? That’s something I started to think about throughout this project. Generally the answer would be yes, but it depends a great deal on the character of each person. You must be strong enough to move forward, not to give up, and take advantage of this kind of situations that awaken the most sensitive part of ourselves, leading us to perceive things that in a different state of mind would pass unnoticed. I’ve met people that in critical circumstances have started to paint, and now they are incredible artists. Others took up writing, me, I held a camera for the first time in a similar situation.

In some way, these events tend to lead us on a personal quest where we aim to channel our emotions and clear our thoughts. Every episode that takes place in our lives scars us one way or another, defining who we are. I never thought I would be a photographer, and though it’s something that happened as result to a disgraceful circumstance, I’m as grateful as I can be for having discovered photography.

What are we going to see at the exhibition you are doing in Barcelona? At the Why Ride Project exhibition you will be able to see the final images of the project. The show will take place starting November the 17th at La Milagrosa, a shop located inside an old candle factory from the 1800s, which has a space in the basement where we are hanging the images and screening a video. Our main goal is to offer an experience, not just an exhibition. We want for the assistants to interact with the show and be part of it, so that we can all cooperate with what is taking place. All the money we collect is destined to go to the NGO Proactiva Open Arms.

Pocos días antes de que partiese rumbo a Landas, Francia, para disputar el Quiksilver Pro France, tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con John John Florence, en el punto de mira por encabezar en ese momento el ranking mundial de la WSL (¡semanas más tarde celebramos que pudimos hablar con el ganador y mejor surfista del año!). Tras pasar unos minutos a solas con él, nos quedó claro que no se le ha subido la fama a la cabeza, incluso tras haber ganado competiciones como el Volcom Pipe Pro cuatro veces y “El Eddie” Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational, siendo el ganador más joven en la historia de este evento, con tan solo 23 años. Presente para la inauguración del Hurley Surf Club en San Sebastián, de la mano de Pukas, nos habló de la importancia de los entrenamientos, la técnica y la familia, además de hacernos saber cómo consigue encontrar el equilibrio entre el free surfing y mantener su corona como #1 en el ranking mundial. Un tío que se pasa el año entero haciendo lo que mejor sabe, cabalgar olas, haciendo fácil lo difícil y “haciendo a los demás parecer tontos”, como lo dijo alguna vez Mitch Crews.

A few days before heading towards Landes to participate in the Quiksilver Pro France, we had the opportunity of talking with John John Florence, who at the moment was very close to win the World Surf League Championship Tour –a few weeks later the unavoidable happened, and he was awarded the crown as best surfer of the year-. After spending some time alone with him, one thing was clear, this guy doesn’t consider himself a star and is still very grounded, keeping it real, even after winning events like the Volcom Pipe Pro four times and “The Eddie” Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational, becoming the youngest contestant to ever win this trophy, with just 23 years. Present during the inauguration of the Hurley Surf Club in San Sebastian, thanks to Pukas, he talked about the importance of training, technique and family, besides letting us know how he manages to find a balance between free surfing and maintaining his place as #1 in the world ranking. A guy that spends the whole year doing what he does best, riding waves, “making it look easy, making everyone else look silly, because he is the man”, as Mitch Crews said.

Hoy en día, los niños tienen la oportunidad de entrenarse con la ayuda de vídeos, como sucede aquí en el Hurley Surf Club, lo que les ayuda a perfeccionar su técnica. Cuando tú eras niño, ¿cómo te entrenabas? Bueno, yo vivía en Hawai, cerca de la playa, y me pasaba todo el día surfeando, ese era mi entrenamiento: surfear todo el día. Iba a la escuela y luego llegaba a casa y me iba a la playa, aunque solo fuera a estar ahí. No era tanto como un entrenamiento formal, sino principalmente pasar el tiempo en el océano, surfeando y pasándolo bien, especialmente disfrutando del mar. Amo el océano. ¿Y tú crees que ahora se está perdiendo un poco esa sensación de mejorar la técnica pero sin dejar de divertirse? Sí, aprender y desarrollar tu técnica es súper importante, pero creo que la gente se está dejando llevar mucho por eso, olvidándose de la diversión al surfear. Surfear es divertido porque cada persona tiene un estilo diferente, ¿sabes? Tú surfeas como mejor lo sientes. Tener a alguien diciéndote cómo debes hacerlo es una cosa, y en realidad tú puedes tener una mentalidad abierta y decir, “está bien, tal vez intentaré eso, pero quiero hacerlo a mi manera’, y eso es algo importante y diferente, es lo que yo he podido hacer con mi surfing. Yo sé cómo me gusta surfear, lo que siento bien para mí, y luego, tengo una mentalidad abierta y acepto algunos consejos de aquí y allí, lo que siempre viene bien.

Está claro que el surf es una de las cosas más importantes en tu vida, ¿también es importante para tu familia? Sí, absolutamente; toda mi familia nació y siempre ha vivido junto al océano, disfrutando gracias a él, ya sea surfeando o navegando o estando en la playa, haciendo cualquier cosa que esté relacionada con el mar… pescando, la lista continúa.

El mar es nuestra vida. ¿Y cómo haces para combinar la competición y el free surfing? Cuéntanos cómo experimentas cada uno, ¿te sientes muy diferente cuando estás haciendo free surfing? Sí, las competiciones y el free surfing son dos cosas completamente distintas. En las competiciones tienes la presión de surfear junto a otra persona, con límites de espacio y tiempo, en el free surfing simplemente haces lo que quieres, puedes intentar hacer trucos aéreos y caerte siempre, si así lo deseas. En las competiciones debes pensar más, también es divertido, se complementan, es un buen equilibrio. ¿Y qué opina tu familia acerca de todos los logros que has alcanzado en estos últimos años? Mi familia me apoya mucho, suelen viajar conmigo a donde quiera que vaya, por ejemplo mi madre ha venido conmigo aquí, está muy bien tener a tu familia cerca.

Con 23 años, ¿qué sientes siendo líder del ranking mundial de la WSL (World Surf League)? Es un poco loco; estoy cumpliendo una de las metas de mi vida, encaminado a ganar el título mundial, pero el año es largo y no puedo detenerme a pensar mucho en ello, sería ponerme demasiada presión encima, así que solo intento divertirme y surfear más heats.

Una de las razones por las que estás aquí es para presentarnos el cuarto capítulo de tu serie TWELVE, ¿qué veremos en esta entrega? En esta entrega os mostramos algunas de las cosas que hago en casa, entre un evento y otro, como navegar, surfear, visitar algunas de las otras islas de Hawai, así que podremos ver diferentes partes de Hawai que normalmente no se ven, que es lo que tiendo a hacer cuando no estoy compitiendo y tengo un poco de tiempo libre. ¿Cuál fue tu inspiración para hacer esta serie? La inspiración llegó tras haber terminado la realización de la película A View From a Blue Moon. Después de unos cuantos años trabajando en ella, con el equipo decidimos que haríamos algo más en el futuro, así que pulimos la idea, y ya que a mí me encanta surfear, trabajar con mi amigo Eric y estar en casa, decidimos enfocar esta vez el proyecto hacia lo que yo suelo hacer entre una competición y otra.

El País Vasco siempre ha logrado poner a alguno de sus surfistas en el tour, como Aritz, ¿crees que en un futuro no muy distante el Hurley Surf Club ayudará a elevar el nivel de los surfers locales para que estos estén entre los mejores del mundo? Sí, creo que el Hurley Surf Club va a jugar un rol importante en el futuro próximo, especialmente ahora que el surf está creciendo tan rápido, próximo a convertirse en un deporte olímpico en los próximos Juegos Olímpicos en Japón, y cada día hay más personas interesadas.

A los niños poder entrenar en un centro como este, con entrenadores que los pueden empujar a mejorar significativamente, haciéndolos cada vez mejores para las competiciones, les ayudará muchísimo.

Como atleta, ¿cuánto y cómo entrenas? Entrenar es muy importante, y yo lo hago de diferentes maneras; entreno surfeando, practicando surf todo el tiempo, pero también patino mucho, y luego hago ejercicios con pesas, estiramientos, trato de mantener mi cuerpo, la flexibilidad y la fuerza para las competiciones, especialmente ahora que todo el mundo quiere ir un paso más allá para vencer al otro. ¿Alguna vez has sentido frustración en tu carrera al no poder coger una ola o desempeñarte como lo esperabas? Sí, claro que he sentido frustración, seguro, pero lo mejor que puedes hacer es dejar que pase, porque este es un deporte en el cual dependes del océano, el cual es impredecible y no puedes controlar, así que el mejor consejo es disfrutar lo que él te quiera ofrecer.

Cuando miras el tamaño de las olas en Hawai, ¿qué piensas? Yo crecí allí, viendo esas olas, así que cuando las cabalgas es un poco ensayo y error, aprendiendo del océano, descubriendo dónde estás, sin excesos de confianza, porque en todo momento debes tener presente que el mar puede ser peligroso. ¿Qué opinas acerca de este Hurley Surf Club en San Sebastián? Creo que es genial que una ciudad tan guay como esta tenga un lugar así, que ofrece la oportunidad de surfear con un entrenador durante noventa minutos para luego ver la sesión en vídeo, ir a almorzar y después volver a surfear, es un sitio perfecto para esto.

Nowadays, kids have the opportunity of having a coaching supported with video material, as it’s happening here thanks to the Hurley Surf Club, something that helps them develop their technique.

When you were a kid, how was your training? Well, when I was a kid I lived in Hawaii, close to the beach, and we just surfed all day; that was my training, surfing all day long. I used to go to school and then come home and go out to surf, hang out at the beach, just spending time out there, bodysurfing. It wasn’t much of a formal training but mainly spending time in the ocean, surfing and having fun, specially having fun in the ocean. I love the ocean.

And do you think that nowadays that mentality is getting lost, aiming to improve technique but also emphasizing on having fun? Yeah, learning and developing your technique is super important, but I think people get too carried away into that and lose the fun of the actual surfing. Surfing is fun because everyone has a different style, you know? You surf how you feel the best. Having someone tell you how to do it is one thing, and you can actually be open-minded and say, ‘okay, maybe I’ll try that, but I want to do it my way’, and that’s another thing, that’s kind of what I’ve been able to do with my surfing. I know how I want to surf, what feels good to me, and then being open-minded and taking a couple of tips here and there, always helps.

Clearly surfing is one of the most important things in your life, is it important for your family too? Yes, totally, my whole family was born by the ocean and we have always lived next to it, having fun thanks to it, either surfing or sailing or bodysurfing, doing anything involved with the ocean… fishing, the list goes on. The ocean is our life.

And how do you combine competing and free surfing? Tell us how do you experience each of these, do you feel different when you are free surfing?

Yes, competition and free surfing are two totally separate things. In the competitions you have the pressure of surfing next to another person and you have limited time and space, in free surfing you are just free to do what you want, you can go and try an air and fall every single time, if you want to. In the contest you have to think a little more, but its fun, they complement each other, it’s a good balance.

And what does you family think about how well you’ve been doing for the last few years? My family is super supportive, they use to travel everywhere when I am around, my mom has come here with me this year; it’s cool to have the family around sometimes.

At 23, what is it like to be leading the WSL rankings?

It’s pretty crazy, I’m achieving one of my life goals, on the road to win the world title, but it’s a long year and I cannot think about it too much, it’s too much to put on yourself, so I’m just trying to have fun and surf more heats.

One of the reasons you are here is to present to us the fourth chapter of your video series TWELVE. What will we see in this episode? We show some of the stuff I

get to do at home, between some of the events, like sailing, surfing, getting to visit some of the other islands in Hawaii, so we can get to see different parts of Hawaii that we usually don’t, we show a lot of that and then a bit of free surfing too, which is mainly what I do between events, when I have time off.

What was your inspiration for doing this series? My inspiration came after we finished the movie project A View From a Blue Moon. We spent the last few years working on that, so when we finished, we were looking what we could do in the future, so we just worked around the idea. Since I enjoy surfing, working with my friend Eric and being home, we decided to do something around the contests, and focus on what I do on my free time.

The Basque Country in Spain has always been able to get a surfer on the tour, like Aritz, do you think that the Hurley Surf Club will help elevate local surfers to be amongst the best in the world in a not too distant future? Yes, I definitely think it’s going to play a big role in the near future, especially now that surfing is growing so fast, becoming an Olympic sport in the next Olympic Games in Japan, and every day there are more people interested. For kids, now being able to train in a facility like this one, with coaches that can help them improve significantly, making them better for competition, I think it’s going to help a ton.

As an athlete, how much do you train and why is it so important? Training is very important. I train in a few different ways, I train surfing, practicing surfing all the time, but also skate a ton, and then I do a little bit of training on the side, stretching; it’s all about maintaining your body, keeping yourself flexible and strong enough for the competition, specially nowadays when everyone is trying to get one step further than the other person.

Have you ever met frustration throughout your career, either when you were not able to catch the perfect wave or could not perform as you expected?

Yes, I have definitely met frustration, for sure, but the best thing you can do is not letting that take hold of you, because surfing is a sport where you relay on the ocean, which is unpredictable and you cannot control anything in it, so the best advice is just try to enjoy whatever is coming to you.

When you look at the size of the waves in Hawaii, what’s on your mind? I grew up there, watching those waves, so when you are riding them it’s kind of trial and error, learning about the ocean, getting to know where you are at, not getting too overconfident, because you must have present all the time that the ocean can be dangerous.

What’s your opinion about this Hurley Surf Club in San Sebastian? I think is great to have a place like this in such a cool city, that offers the opportunity of going out surfing with a coach for ninety minutes and then come back and see the video footage, go have lunch and then go back surfing, it’s just such a nice set up for that.

Haber nacido en la zona costera de las Landas forma parte de su genética, una genética forjada por el surf y la fotografía. Durante toda su vida, Bernard Testemale ha cabalgado al remolque de las mejores olas y las mejores tomas.

Para él todo sucede por alguna razón. Tras un corto período liderando la industria de las tablas de surf, un grave accidente cambió su vida y su visión del mundo. Una difícil rehabilitación le obligó a abandonar el mundo de la industria, pero le abrió la ventana de la fotografía. Aquello que comenzó como un hobby amateur acabó atrayendo a las mejores publicaciones y empresas, quiénes iban en busca de la profundidad de sus retratos, lo que le permitió fundir sus dos pasiones en una sola. En su retrospectiva fotográfica sobre las raíces del surf, para Quiksilver, rebobina hasta sus inicios gracias a la antigua técnica del colodión húmedo, un reclamo al respeto de la herencia surfista, mediante un arte auténtico que aboga por la originalidad y el esfuerzo.

His genetics are determined by his birthplace, the coastline of Landes, which shaped his true self through photography and surfing. Throughout his whole life, Bernard Testemale has ridden the best waves and taken the best snaps.

For him, everything happens for a reason. After a decade leading the fin fabrication industry, a serious accident changed his path and his perspective about life. The arduous rehabilitation forced him to leave this endeavor behind, but it opened for him the world of photography. That, which began as a hobby, ended up bringing to his doorstep the best magazines and brands, who were longing for the depth in his portraits. This allowed him to blend both of his passions in the same practice. His photographic retrospective about the roots of surfing, for Quiksilver, has led him to go back all the way to his beginnings, and thanks to the wet collodion technique, which he employs as a statement that enhances the surf heritage, he has been able to compel us all through his authentic art that embraces originality and hard work.

¿Cómo definirías tu relación con el surf y la fotografía, y la manera en la cual logras equilibrar las dos disciplinas al mismo tiempo? No puedo decir que sea un surfista, aunque me haya enamorado de este deporte hace cuarenta años, durante mi juventud. Me mantuve alejado del océano durante una década, antes de regresar a él gracias a la “funboard”. Aprender a surfear con vela fue increíble y es básicamente donde empecé a unir mis dos amores, la fotografía y el surf.

Antes solías tener un pequeño taller donde desarrollabas tu propio negocio de quillas, llamado Aerial Fin, con grandes clientes, como Pukas o Stark, y gracias al cual recibiste muchos elogios por parte de la comunidad surfera. Cuéntanos un poco de esta etapa de tu vida. Las circunstancias decidieron por mí. Empecé con Aerial Fin Factory junto a un amigo con el objetivo de mantenernos cerca del océano y pasar el tiempo libre que tuviéramos surfeando y navegando. El dueño anterior nos dejó el negocio ya con algunos clientes dentro de la industria, y nosotros desarrollamos el mercado. Por ese entonces éramos prácticamente la única compañía que suministraba quillas para el mercado surfero, y ahora, la mayoría de compañías de tablas que se hacen en Europa, como Pukas, Euroglass, Maurice Cole, etc., emplean nuestros conocimientos. Martin Potter, Tom Curren, Tom Carroll y muchos más, solían tener nuestras quillas en sus tabas antes de que empezara la producción en masa en China y se tomara el mercado. Pero nuestra actividad principal era la investigación y el desarrollo enfocado hacia los profesionales del windsurf. Cuando cerramos la compañía después de mi accidente, siete de los mejores diez windsurfers dentro del circuito utilizaban nuestras quillas. Logramos conseguir casi 20 títulos mundiales y romper varios registros de velocidad por una década.

Tuviste un grave accidente en motocicleta que cambió tu perspectiva en cuanto a la vida y tu trayectoria profesional. Ahora, que ha pasado el tiempo y ya te has recuperado, ¿cuéntanos cómo cambió tu vida en ese momento? Aprendí que todo pasa por una razón.

Me rompí la columna vertebral en ese accidente y por ese entonces nuestra compañía, Aerial Fin, era muy exitosa dentro del circuito mundial. Pero éramos una empresa pequeña, haciendo piezas a mano únicamente para windsurfers profesionales y algunas tiendas especializadas. La demanda de nuestros productos era alta, pero nosotros no queríamos que la compañía creciera hasta el punto de que perdiéramos nuestra libertad.

Cuando pasó lo del accidente, tuvimos que tomar una decisión difícil. Pero la respuesta estaba allí. No había elección, así que cerramos la fábrica. ¿Cómo fueron tus inicios en la fotografía? ¿Sientes que es una práctica que te permite ver la realidad a

través de otra perspectiva? Desde que era joven he amado la fotografía, y siempre he tenido una cámara cerca de mí, cuando he tenido la oportunidad de comprarla. En los primeros viajes que realicé para seguir de cerca el circuito mundial de windsurf, llevaba conmigo un equipo de fotografía profesional, y durante el tiempo libre intentaba sacar fotos de acción, por puro placer. Pero poco a poco, algunas revistas y marcas me empezaron a preguntar si podía darles algunas de mis imágenes. Así fue como empezó. Luego durante mi rehabilitación tras el accidente puede decirse que me profesionalicé. Fue por ese entonces cuando Quiksilver empezó a crecer en Europa, y yo crecí de la mano de ellos.

Cartier Bresson fue el primero en hablar del momento decisivo, y cómo el fotógrafo no es más que un espectador intentando capturar un momento en el tiempo. ¿Crees que esta afirmación es válida? ¿Eres solo un espectador o crees que formas parte de la escena que intentas capturar? En la fotografía deportiva de acción se trata única y exclusivamente de capturar el ‘momento decisivo’, y para eso se requiere cierto conocimiento del tema. Pero eso es solamente una pequeña parte de la fotografía. Como Ansell Adams dijo, ‘una fotografía no la haces solo con una cámara. Traes al acto de fotografiar todas las imágenes que has visto, todos los libros que has leído, la música que has escuchado, las personas que has amado’. Es prácticamente donde estoy ahora y la razón por la cual me dedico a la fotografía, ‘por amor’.

El objetivo principal de los Big Wave Riders de Hawai es representar el espíritu Aloha, honrarlo y respetarlo. ¿Al utilizar la técnica del colodión húmedo crees que estás haciendo lo mismo pero en la fotografía, respetando su patrimonio histórico? Sí, se puede decir que se trata del patrimonio histórico.

Este proceso encaja perfectamente con mi sujeto. La comunidad surfera es una tribu dentro de una tribu.

Puedo ver que les gusta la foto histórica y primaveral tomada por Edward S. Curtis del nativo americano Titus, donde aparece como un gran líder indígena. No existe otra técnica que pueda resaltar más el “alma” en el resultado. ¿Cómo te interesaste en esta técnica, que se desarrolló hace 150 años? Empecé a retroceder en el tiempo utilizando mi cámara antigua hace cinco años, empezando por el formato medio, luego el gran formato y los lentes antiguos, que me trajeron por este camino en el cual me adentro un poco más cada día, hasta llegar a los orígenes de la fotografía. Ahora se ha convertido en una verdadera adicción.

Tu historia con Quiksilver viene de tiempo atrás. ¿Qué piensas acerca de su, aparentemente eterna,

relación con la comunidad surfera? He tenido la fortuna de recorrer el mismo camino que Quiksilver estos últimos 25 años. Ellos llevan cuatro décadas liderando la vanguardia del mundo surfero, y trabajar con esta compañía tan creativa ha sido un gran regalo en mi vida. Desde Tom Carroll a Kelly Slater, Jeremy Flores, o la nueva generación con Leonardo Fioranvanti. Ellos elevan a los mejores surfistas y abren muchas puertas, como el dream tour que empieza con una competencia en G-Land o el Crossing Project.

En tu opinión, ¿cuál es el mejor spot en el mundo para surfear? Probablemente aquel que sueño con encontrar, en la mitad de la nada con nadie alrededor.

Algo bastante utópico estos días, pero no imposible. ¡Toca mantener el sueño vivo!

Creciste cerca de Landas, en medio de la costa vasca, un lugar donde la escena surfera de Europa tiene mucha presencia. ¿El haber crecido allí dejó una marca en ti? Seguro, haber crecido cerca de la playa en los setenta es algo que permanecerá por siempre en mi memoria y ahora forma parte de mi genética, al menos eso creo.

Ya has alcanzado un éxito significativo dentro del mundo de la fotografía de surf, desde los viajes de Quiksilver hasta el primer evento WTC en G-Land, Indonesia. Después de todos estos años de experiencia, cuéntanos, ¿cuáles son las cosas que más han cambiado dentro de la fotografía de este estilo desde que empezaste? ¿Crees que ahora es un nicho mucho más competitivo? Nunca he tenido ningún problema con la competitividad, ella te empuja a ser mejor, no es algo negativo. El espíritu de la fotografía de surf sigue ahí, pero lo que ha cambiado en el mundo de la fotografía en general es ‘la aceleración’ y la gran cantidad de imágenes producidas cada segundo, para ser esparcidas al minuto siguiente por toda la red moderna virtual. Las opciones son ilimitadas y el hermano mayor gobierna y está en cada esquina. Esa es una de las razones por las cuales estoy tan enfocado en ‘mis producciones hechas a mano’. Quiero mantener mi mente ocupada en algo real, algo único.

Los viajes son una gran fuente de momentos e inspiración, y has recorrido el mundo entero gracias a tu trabajo como fotógrafo, pero también cuando trabajabas transportando “material sensible”. ¿Cuál es el momento más especial que has vivido allí afuera y la mejor imagen que hiciste mientras estabas de viaje? En los noventa me pasé mucho tiempo viajando con mis carretes, sin internet ni teléfonos móviles. A comienzos del nuevo milenio hubo muchos cambios por la tecnología y empecé a utilizar los procesos digitales, los ordenadores y sistemas de comunicación. Regresar a los orígenes es una experiencia increíble y retadora.

Procesar imágenes a través del proceso químico requiere utilizar mucho material sensible, parece como un laboratorio de “Breaking Bad”. Construir el laboratorio en Hawai para este proyecto fue un momento increíble. Eso hace que esta colección sea muy especial y sin lugar a dudas mi creación más importante. Siempre intento hacer que mi última imagen sea la mejor, y la siguiente aún mejor. Nunca estar del todo satisfecho es la manera en la cual avanzo en la vida.

El monotema de esta edición es RIDE LIFE. ¿Qué significa esto para ti, basado en tu experiencia?

La vida es una locura y nada está asegurado. ‘¿Quién necesita 9 vidas? - ¡Yo! Que ya he quemado siete’.

Cuéntanos acerca de tus próximos proyectos.

La fotografía de colodión húmedo es un enorme mundo listo para ser explorado, y yo hasta ahora estoy en la primera etapa con mi libro. Me gustaría ir más allá en esta dirección y seguir fotografiando almas grandiosas y lugares magníficos alrededor del mundo.

Mi instinto me guía por ese camino.

COMO DIJO ANSELL ADAMS, ‘UNA FOTOGRAFÍA NO LA HACES SOLO CON UNA CÁMARA. TRAES AL ACTO DE FOTOGRAFIAR TODAS LAS IMÁGENES QUE HAS VISTO, TODOS LOS LIBROS QUE HAS LEÍDO, LA MÚSICA QUE HAS ESCUCHADO, LAS PERSONAS QUE HAS AMADO’.

How would you def ine your relationship with surf and photography, and the way you manage to balance them both at the same time? I can’t say I’m a surfer, even if I fell in love, 40 years ago, with this sport in my young age. I stayed away from the ocean for a decade before I came back thanks to the “ funboard”. Surfing with a sail is incredible, and it’s basically where I started to blend my two loves, photography and surfing.

You used to run a small workshop for your own fin business, called Aerial Fin, with a list of renowned clients such as Pukas or Stark, achieving significant praise from the surf community. Tell us about that time in your life. Circumstances have decided for me. I started to run Aerial Fin Factory with one of my friends, mainly to stay close to the ocean and use our free time to surf and sail. The prior owner had left us some clients in the surf industry, and we developed the market. Back then we were pretty much the only company who could provide fins for the surf market, and today, most of the surfboards made in Europe at Pukas, Euroglass, Maurice Cole, ect., use our knowledge. Martin Potter, Tom Curren, Tom Carroll and many more, had our fins on their surf boards before China’s mass production ruled the market. But our main activity was the research and development for pro windsurfers. When we closed the factory after my accident, on the top ten world tour ranking, the first seven used our fins. We collected almost 20 world titles and broke speed records for a decade.

You had a very bad motorcycle accident that changed your perspective about life and career path.

Now that some time has gone by and you have recovered, tell us how did your life change during this period? I learned one thing in my life, “everything happens for one reason”. I broke my spine after a motorbike crash and, at this time of my life, our company Aerial Fin was very successful on the world tour.

But we were a small factory producing hand made pieces only for professional windsurfers and a few selected core shops. Demand was high and we didn’t really want go big and raise the company to a level where we were going to lose our freedom. The decision was hard to take when my accident happened. But the answer was there. We had no choice; we had to shut down the factory.

How did you first get into photography? Do you feel that it allows you to see reality through a different perspective? I have always loved photography, since my young age, and I have always had a little camera not too far from me, here and there, when I have had a chance to buy one. During my travels following the windsurf tour around the world, I had some professional equipment, and during my free time I tried to shoot action photos just for my pleasure. But little by little, some magazines and brands asked me to provide them some of my images. That was the start.

Afterwards, I began to be more professional during my rehab, after my accident. That was the time when Quiksilver started to rise in Europe, so I grew up with them.

Cartier Bresson was the first to talk about the decisive moment, and how the photographer is just a viewer trying to catch a moment in time. Do you think this statement is still valid? Are you just a viewer or do you think that you are part of the scene

that you are trying to capture? Action sport photography is all about capturing the ‘decisive moment’, and that requires certain knowledge on your subject.

Though this is just a little part of photography. As Ansell Adams said, “you don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”

It’s pretty much where I am right now and why I am a photographer, “ for the love”.

The main goal of The Big Wave Riders of Hawaii is to represent the Aloha spirit, heritage and respect. By using the wet collodion technique do you think that, in a way, you are doing the same thing with photography, respecting its heritage? Yes, we can say that it is all about the heritage. This process matches perfectly with the subject. The surf community is a tribe within a tribe. I can see that they like the old historical picture of Edward S Curtis, from the Native American Titus looking like an Indian chief. No other technique can bring more “soul” into the final result.

How did you first become interested in this technique, developed 150 years ago? I started to go back in time using my old camera, five years ago, first, exploring the medium format, then the large format and antic lenses, which brought me down this path. Each time I dive a little bit deeper, aiming to go back to the origins of photography. It has now become a real addiction.

Quiksilver and yourself go a long way back. What do you think about their, what seems to be, everlasting relationship with the surf community? I’ve been fortunate to walk on the same path with Quiksilver for the last 25 years. They have been leading the surfing world for 4 decades, and working with this creative company was a big gift in my life. From Tom Carroll to Kelly Slater and Jeremy Flores, or the new generation with Leonardo Fioranvanti. They always work with the best surfers and open so many doors within the industry, like the dream tour that starts with a contest in G-Land or the Crossing Project.

You grew up near Landes, in the middle of the Basque coastline, a place where the European surf scene has a hotspot. Did growing up there leave a mark on you? For sure, living on the beachside in the ’70s will be in my mind forever, it’s part of my genetics now, I guess.

Traveling is a big source of moments and inspiration, and you have been all over the world thanks to your work as photographer, but also when you worked transporting “sensitive materials”. Which is the most special moment you have lived “out there” and the best image you made whilst on the road? In the ‘90s I was traveling with my rolls of film, with no Internet and no cell phones, spending a lot of time on the road. In the early 2000s there was a big turn due to the new technologies, and I started to rely on the digital process, on computers and modern communication systems. Going back to the roots is an incredible and challenging experience. The chemical process requires the use of so much sensible materials that the laboratory you deal with is kind of “Breaking Bad” style.

Just building the lab in Hawaii for this project was an incredible experience. That makes this collection very special and, certainly, the most important creation I’ve ever done. I always try to make my last image the best

one, and then, I try to do the next one even better. Never being totally satisfied is the way I advance in life.

In your opinion, which is the best surf spot in the world? Probably the one I dream to discover, in the middle of nowhere with nobody around, pretty hard to find these days, but not impossible. You gotta keep the dream alive!

The title of this issue is RIDE LIFE. What does these words mean to you, based on your own experience? Life is a crazy ride and nothing is guaranteed. “Who needs 9 lives? - Me! I already burnt 7”.

You have already achieved significant success within the surf photography scene, from the Quiksilver trip to the first ever WCT event at G-L and in Indonesia. After these years of experience, tell us, what things have changed the most within the surf photography

scene since your beginnings? Do you think that nowadays the field has become more competitive? I have never got a problem with competition, since it pushes you to be better, and that is not a bad thing. The surf photography spirit is still there, but what has changed within the world of photography in general is “the acceleration” and the incredible amount of images being produced every single second, to be, the next minute, spread all over the virtual modern network. Choices are unlimited and big brother rules every spot and corner now. It’s one of the reasons why I’m so into my ‘hand made production’. I want to keep my mind focused in something real, something unique.

Tell us about your upcoming projects. Wet plate photography is a massive world to explore and I’m just in stage one with my book. I would like to go further in this direction and keep on photographing great souls and magnificent places around our world. My instinct drives me this way.

ANTHONY LISTER … y su genio infantil

Era viernes noche y Marco, el tío del vídeo, y yo llegamos al hotel de Anthony para llevar a cabo esta entrevista. La noche anterior, los tres habíamos estado presentes en el lanzamiento de la colección Lister x Volcom, en el Nasty Garage de Barcelona. El evento fue todo un éxito, prueba de ello son los bocetos, lienzos y paredes con las prolíficas obras de este artista que quedaron como testigos mudos. Después de la fiesta, Anthony se fue a su habitación de hotel, donde se llevaron a cabo algunas actividades que no mencionaremos debido a su naturaleza bizarra. Yo, en lo personal, me considero un amante apasionado de las artes visuales, y ésta era la primera vez que tenía la oportunidad de experimentar el desarrollo creativo de un artista y ser testigo de la creación de piezas comercialmente exitosas. Al principio de la semana no sabía que este tío, al final de la noche, me iba a convencer de su maestría y talento. No es fácil complacer a todo el mundo, por no decir imposible, pero las piezas que realizó Lister coparon todos mis preconceptos sobre lo que una obra de arte debe tener. Gracias a su formación académica, Anthony respeta la técnica; es hábil y su devoción por el oficio es total. En el tiempo que tuvimos para conversar, hablamos sobre el ideal de arte, de Dios, de los hijos y de la escena artística contemporánea, todo antes de que nos retiráramos a su habitación de hotel a consumir narcóticos, ver vídeos de Youtube, permitir que Tony Hawk me rompiese el corazón, para finalmente salir a la calle a taggear paredes, edificios, semáforos y todo lo que se nos atravesara en el camino.

It was Friday night and Marco, the camera guy, and I, arrived at Anthony’s hotel to carry out this interview. The night before, all three of us had been present during the launching of his capsule collection, Lister x Volcom, in Barcelona, at the Nasty Garage. The event turned out to be success, leaving behind sketches, canvases and walls covered with the prolific works of this visual artist. After the party, Anthony parted to his hotel room, where some activities took place, activities we wont mention due to their bizarre nature. I, myself, love the arts passionately, and this was the first time I had the chance to experience the creative development of an artist and witness at first hand the creation of commercially successful works. At the beginning of the week I didn’t know that this guy, by the end of the night, would convince me of his artistry and talent. It’s not easy to please everyone nowadays, not to say impossible, but the pieces of this guy satisfied all my preconceptions of what a work of art must contain. Thanks to his academic background, Lister respects the technique; he is skillful and completely devoted to his craft. In the time we had to share, we discussed the ideal of art, of God, of children and the contemporary art scene, all this before we went to his hotel room to do some narcotics, see some cool skateboarding videos on Youtube, let Tony Hawk break my heart, to eventually walk around the city tagging walls, buildings, traffic lights and what not.

Anthony bajó de su habitación con una botella de whiskey por la mitad, y antes de sentarse en el sillón donde teníamos pensado llevar a cabo la entrevista, se dirigió a un piano que estaba en el lobby. Éste estaba cerrado, por lo que me fui hacia la chica detrás del counter y le pedí la llave. Anthony tocó por algunos minutos, para luego cerrarlo, darle un sorbo a la botella de J&B, y sentarse con Marco y conmigo, dispuesto a responder nuestras preguntas mientras terminaba y firmaba los 24 bocetos que hizo la noche anterior con tres chicas desnudas que posaron para él durante la fiesta.

Eres uno de los pocos “artistas callejeros” alrededor del mundo que ha logrado pasar de las paredes en la calle a las galerías. ¿Cómo lograste esto? Yo siento que he pasado de las galerías a la calle, porque antes de que pintase en la calle estudiaba Bellas Artes, sintiendo que mi objetivo estaba enfocado en ser un artista que expone en galerías… ¿sabes? En galerías públicas que pertenecen a grandes instituciones, esa siempre ha sido mi meta principal. El trabajo en la calle, el arte público, fue secundario a mi práctica en el estudio.

Y tu estilo, el que vemos en tus piezas en la calle, ¿viene de tu práctica en el estudio o se desarrolló por sí solo mientras hacías ‘street art’? Bueno… -Anthony toma una pausa larga, algo que se volverá recurrente a lo largo de la entrevista, como si cada vez que va a responder algo, debiera estar del todo seguro de las palabras que utilizará-. Creo que inicialmente se desarrolló con la premisa de tener que ser rápido y efectivo, ya que lo hago en la calle, pero todo surge desde el estudio. Cuando estoy descifrando cómo dibujar o hacer algo de manera efectiva, eficiente y cómo dominarlo, esa seguridad surge inicialmente en mis prácticas de estudio.

Entonces la mayoría de piezas que haces en la calle, ¿tienen un estudio previo el cual luego pasas a la pared? No necesariamente, no. Las piezas que hago en los muros pueden surgir de manera muy espontánea y, por lo general, si estoy haciendo una pieza en la calle en un ambiente que no me es familiar puede pasar de todo, como el otro día con la pieza que hice aquí en Barcelona, donde pensé que sabía lo que quería hacer cuando vi el muro, pero para entonces ya era de noche, y no fue hasta que regresé el día siguiente a ver el trabajo que había hecho que caí en cuenta de que había hecho la pieza equivocada para ese muro, entonces lo cubrí todo de blanco y empecé de nuevo. Pero no hice ningún boceto para ello, simplemente lo visualicé en mi mente y luego lo manifesté. –Anthony hizo dos superhéroes contrayendo matrimonio en el muro del que habla.

Tras cinco horas trabajando en el mural, decidió cubrirlo todo de blanco. Luego intentó hacer un Spiderman moviéndose alrededor de todo el muro, para cubrirlo de blanco de nuevo al día siguiente. La pieza final fue una bailarina.

Hablando de la pieza que hiciste aquí en Barcelona, cuando viste por primera vez el vídeo del muro que ibas a pintar, tuviste que escoger los colores inmediatamente, sin tener mucho tiempo para pensar qué ibas a hacer. ¿Prefieres trabajar así cuando vas a hacer una obra en la calle o, por el contrario, te gustaría contar

con más tiempo para desarrollar la idea y tal vez dos o tres días después ir a la pared a trabajar? Wow, bueno… eso sería lo ideal.

Pero, habiendo dicho eso, cuanto más tiempo y cuantas más opciones tengo, en cuanto a colores, por lo que se acotan los límites, entonces le dedico más tiempo a meditar. Si tengo diez minutos o diez años para considerar lo que voy a hacer, entonces tardaré diez minutos o diez años. Por lo tanto siento que menos es más cuando se trata de lo que necesito para crear algo. Por ejemplo, algunas de mis mejores piezas las haré con recursos limitados, y esto lo sé porque las que me han tomado años de creación y me han causado sufrimiento, han sido precisamente con las que tenido más opciones y demasiadas libertades.

Cambiando un poco el tema, ¿crees que la escena artística hoy en día está gobernada por las apariencias? No entiendo la pregunta.

Por ejemplo, algunas veces las galerías ofrecen su espacio a ciertos artistas debido principalmente a su fama y las relaciones públicas que manejan, por encima del trabajo que están creando. ¿crees que eso sucede o estoy equivocado? Claro que sucede, y pasa porque las galerías son negocios y deben subsistir, pero al final del día, cuando yo colecciono arte, por ejemplo, y colecciono mucho arte, intercambiando piezas con amigos o comprando obras, solo compro o colecciono arte que me gusta, y me gustaría pensar que las galerías y los otros coleccionistas piensan de la misma manera, que no comprometerían su integridad solo para hacer dinero o darle a alguien la impresión de ser algo que no son. ¿Sabes lo que estoy diciendo?

Yo no colgaría una obra en mi casa solo porque la hizo Picasso, si mi Picasso es una mierda, no lo colgaría en mi pared, y probablemente no lo habría comprado en primer lugar, pero el Picasso que tengo es hermoso, entonces lo cuelgo.

En el mundo del arte, la palabra ‘estética’ se utiliza con frecuencia, un concepto vinculado a aquel de ‘belleza’ y frecuentemente considerado como subjetivo, sin embargo existen teorías que intentan traducir dicho concepto en una fórmula matemática, como el número áureo. ¿Crees que existe una definición universal para aquello que es estético o hermoso? No, no creo que haya alguna definición que sea definitivamente aplicable y cuantificablemente exacta, creo que la estética es una racionalización abstracta y ambigua, no se puede ser exacto en cuanto a ella. Habiendo dicho eso, existe una estética en el hecho de decir ‘gracias’, por supuesto, ese es un pensamiento abstracto y lo estoy utilizando como metáfora, ya que estoy hablando de si algo es hermoso o no. Decir ‘gracias’, sea de manera intencional o sarcástica, es siempre una referencia al concepto de estar agradecido por algo, así que sin importar si la estética es incorrecta o no, dependiendo de la percepción de la persona que lo está calificando, agradecer siempre será un ideal hermoso… Creo que es una pregunta muy interesante.

Gracias (risas). Por lo tanto no crees del todo que el concepto de ‘belleza’ o ‘estética’ pueda ser definido universalmente. Aun así, es una noción que suele estar regida por las circunstancias, por el periodo de tiempo en el cual vivimos. Por ejemplo, como sociedad, tendemos a tener, en conjunto, un ideal de belleza, y todos parecemos estar de acuerdo al decidir si algo es hermoso o

no. Entonces, ¿crees que el concepto de belleza está gobernado por el momento en el tiempo en el cual vivimos y por la cultura que los medios promueven y lo que vemos en la calle? Sí, estoy de acuerdo, la estética y la noción de belleza ha cambiado a lo largo del tiempo, tan solo con observar diferentes culturas puedes darte cuenta de que en sociedades donde sufren de hambre o durante periodos de hambruna en la historia, las mujeres voluptuosas, las más grandes, son consideradas mucho más hermosas y parejas más atractivas para procrear. Creo que es un concepto potencialmente regido por los periodos de tiempo. Si hablamos de las pinturas egipcias, o las realmente antiguas, muchas de ellas continúan siendo hermosas, pero entonces también debemos entender, o al menos definir, por qué estamos catalogando algo como hermoso. Está la técnica, la habilidad necesaria para lograr algo, y luego está el sujeto en sí, así que ya sabes, los grabados de Goya de la Guerra de La Independencia Española, en su momento no querían que nadie los viera, eran grotescos, y hoy en día continúan siendo perturbadores, pero obviamente fueron hechos por un hombre con un talento enorme, y yo no diría que la representación de una decapitación o castración de una persona no es algo hermoso, pero estéticamente hablando es muy reconfortante para los ojos.

Hablando de perturbador y reconfortante, hay esta frase que se repite constantemente: ‘El arte debe reconfortar a los perturbados y perturbar a los que están cómodos’, ¿estás de acuerdo?

Creo que es una afirmación bastante atrevida. Se me olvida quién la dijo… -en la cocina comienzan a sonar cubiertos, mientras tanto Anthony se empieza a liar un cigarro, aunque claramente está prohibido fumar dentro del hotel- Creo que a mí no me corresponde decir qué debe o qué no debe ser el arte, en realidad ni siquiera me siento cómodo utilizando la palabra, es un concepto muy amplio, pero me gusta la idea de perturbar a las personas que están muy complacientes con su estilo de vida, y no lo digo de manera de crítica, pero creo que a mí me gusta… está bien, estoy dándole vueltas a la respuesta. Mira, yo me siento cómodo mirando a los ojos a la gente en la calle que suele evitar la mirada de los demás, por ejemplo… y esa es una afirmación muy general también, ¿cómo quiero responder a esto? Intento responder diciendo, –se

toma otra pausa larga y medita qué es lo que quiere decir. Cabe aclarar que dicha frase se le ha atribuido a Banksy y Lister ha sido considerado muchas veces como el Banksy australiano, un título que a mí parecer no le agrada– que me gusta como suena.

Tuviste una exposición titulada ‘The Beauty In Failure’. ¿Dónde está la belleza en el fracaso? Así es, hice esta exposición alguna vez llamada ‘The Beauty In Failure’, y en ella estaba haciendo referencia a la absurdidad, o al menos a la absurdidad que yo percibo, de la competencia. Alguien puede trabajar toda su vida para ganar una carrera, y otro puede trabajar toda su vida para llegar segundo, y pudo haber estado a una nariz de llegar en primer lugar. A mí me gusta pensar que en el futuro, cuando sea un viejo haciendo una retrospectiva de mi vida, consideraré que hice lo mejor posible, desempeñándome al máximo de mis capacidades, evitando pensar en cómo me juzgarán los demás o si soy un ganador o un perdedor, o exitoso o un fracasado.

–El ruido de los cubiertos en la cocina aumenta gradualmente y pasa de ser casi desapercibido a molesto– Así, que para responder tu pregunta, sí, creo que hay belleza en el fracaso, pero solo si no ves el fracaso dentro del contexto que lo plantea el mundo, donde siempre debe haber algún tipo de ganador. No estoy a favor de la competencia, y creo que al final del día no veo a nadie como un fracasado, a menos que ellos ya hayan tenido en su cabeza la idea de vencer a alguien, y de ser así, ya han fracasado en primer lugar.

Sí, de acuerdo, porque la idea que tenemos en el mundo del fracaso tiene una connotación negativa, y no debe ser así necesariamente. El fracaso algunas veces puede ser constructivo de cara a algo que vendrá más adelante. Absolutamente, es muy importante hacer lo que se haga lo mejor posible, pero simple y llanamente con el propósito de vencerse a sí mismo. En el pasado he dicho que eres tan inteligente como tu última decisión y tan bueno como tu última producción. –El ruido de los cubiertos en la cocina aumenta gradualmente y comienza a hacerse intolerable– Cuando digo esto, me refiero a que siempre intento hacer un trabajo mejor al que hice ayer, intento tomar mejores decisiones, y constantemente me veo abofeteado en la cara por mi propia mano (risas). Ojalá cada vez sea menos fuerte.

NO VEO A NADIE COMO UN FRACASADO, A MENOS QUE ELLOS YA HAYAN TENIDO EN SU CABEZA LA IDEA DE VENCER A ALGUIEN, Y DE SER ASÍ, YA HAN FRACASADO EN PRIMER LUGAR.

Cuando estás trabajando, ¿qué se ve reflejado de manera más clara en tus trabajos, tus pensamientos o tus emociones? Oh, dios… Si tuviera que escoger una diría que… –Se toma una pausa larga y enciende su cigarro– mi espíritu. Porque, ¿es el espíritu un pensamiento o una emoción? No lo creo, creo que el espíritu es la activación de este archivo de canales ancestrales que poseemos, y no pretendo sonar… -Anthony se desconcentra y mira fijamente a la mujer que está guardando los cubiertos en la cocina- Será que ella podría parar de sacar dientes allá atrás, no, está bien… -Mira a Marco- sí, será que puedes decirle algo… –Marco se levanta y se dirige a la cocina– Así que sobre el espíritu, las emociones y los pensamientos; yo soy responsable de mis pensamientos, yo soy responsable de mis emociones, mis emociones son una reacción a las circunstancias, mis pensamientos son una reacción a mi intelecto evolucionando y procesando información. Cuando se trata del espíritu, podemos ser conscientes pero muchas veces no lo somos, y no somos exactamente responsables por nuestro espíritu, y es por eso que se trata de algo… –el ruido de los cubiertos se detiene y Marco regresa– buen trabajo haciendo que dejara de sacar dientes, gracias… Pero no somos del todo responsables por nuestro espíritu, aunque podemos ser concientes de él, y una vez lo somos podemos intentar dirigir conscientemente su evolución, ya sea para bien o para mal, ya sea hacia la religión o hacia algo más. Así que para responder a tu pregunta, yo diría que lo que más pongo en mis obras es mi espíritu, por encima de mis pensamientos y mis emociones.

Hablando del espíritu, al trabajar, ¿pones en tus obras representaciones de creencias metafísicas o intentas evitarlo? Muchas creencias metafísicas, aunque ninguna que vaya a comunicar abiertamente. Creo que ser conciente del espíritu es algo muy saludable. Lo que sea a lo que tu llamas Dios, es asunto tuyo, y yo llamo a mi poder, lo que sea que es, Dios, para hacerlo más fácil de entender a los demás, eso a lo que yo llamo poder superior, pero creer en un poder superior, en un ser supremo es algo muy importante si uno quiere seguir adelante importándole ese tipo de mierda. ¿Sabes lo que digo?

Sí. Hablando acerca de manifestaciones, en tu opinión, ¿existe alguna manifestación superior al amor, y de ser así, qué tiene que ver con el arte? A ver, una manifestación superior al amor es… No sé si hay alguna manifestación superior al amor, ¿es esa la pregunta?

Sí. Está bien, lo único superior al amor es tú mismo, porque es sobre lo que tienes poder, es el Dios de tu ser, y luego, la máxima manifestación del ser es definitivamente Dios, la conciencia de que hay algo más grande que tú, y luego, si hay algo superior a Dios, eso son los niños, o al menos eso he sentido yo cuando he tenido hijos… -se toma otra pausa larga para poner en orden sus pensamientos- Por mis hijos mataría a Dios, ¿sabes? Por mis hijos me pararía en frente de un coche andando, me quemaría y no gritaría con tal de salvar a mis hijos, ¿sabes?

Por supuesto. ¿Cuál es la lección más grande que te han enseñado tus hijos? Oh wow, son tantas y no se detienen. Entonces para enfocar la pregunta, una lección que puedas traducir en tu trabajo o en tus obras. Ah, está bien, en el trabajo. Ves, es difícil, porque aquí estoy, al otro lado del mundo por mis hijos, los extraño, y ellos me

han enseñado que el dinero, la fama y hacer cuadros, no te acompaña por la noche ni te abraza, porque todo esto, esta vida, me ha costado tanto tiempo con mis hijos que nunca recuperaré… Es una relación de amor y odio… ¿Qué me han enseñado mis hijos? Ellos me han enseñado que, es como esa canción de Eminem, una mierda realmente profunda… Mis hijos son muchos mejores que yo, y yo los he entrenado para que sean mejores que yo, y no me refiero en cuanto a habilidades, simplemente quiere decir que son mejores seres humanos que yo, como resultado de haber sacrificado todo por este oficio, que me ha devorado desde afuera hacia adentro. Es como si ellos fuesen mejores personas que yo, porque ellos ya han visto y experimentado esto, y lo han trascendido, este encantamiento de cierto tipo cosmético que yo todavía no he podido trascender, la estética de este estilo de vida, coño… no en cuanto a hacer arte, sino toda la fama y toda esta mierda, ¿sabes? Lo que sea tío… Ellos son personas hermosas y maravillosas; son mucho más evolucionados que yo…

Qué preguntas tan pesadas tío… o simplemente yo estoy denso hoy, porque no he podido darte una respuesta a todo esto…

Bueno, de vez en cuando vienen bien alejarse de las preguntas convencionales. Así que aquí viene otra personal. Si no pudieses vivir del arte, ¿aún sería lo único a lo que te dedicarías? No sabría cómo no hacerlo, es mi pasión. Y eso que he patinado por más tiempo del que he pintado o dibujado, pero eso, no es algo que tú dejes, es algo que te deja a ti, ¿sabes? Así que esta es una de las cosas que desde muy pequeño he sabido que puedo hacer por mucho tiempo. Si no ganara dinero del arte, ¿aún lo seguiría haciendo? Sí. Y sería más fácil para mí afirmarlo sin que fuese verdad, sólo por decirlo, pero creo que es cierto; mi abuela continuó pintando hasta los 91 años, hasta poco antes de su muerte seguía haciendo cuadros, creo que es algo que llevo en la sangre.

Y ahora hablando del evento que se llevó a cabo anoche para presentar la colección que has realizado con Volcom. ¿Cómo te sientes al respecto, estás satisfecho con cómo se desarrolló? Sí, seguro.

Fue una gran fiesta, y las gabardinas están geniales, estoy feliz de haber dejado un muro en Barcelona, y todo el mundo aquí y en todo el evento se ha portado muy bien, trabajar con Volcom ha sido genial. ¿Y qué expectativas tienes para los dos próximos shows, en Austin (TX) y México DF? Las expectativas son difíciles porque dan paso a decepciones, pero espero esforzarme por mantenerme positivo y sí, mira, a mí me gusta que las cosas sean más grandes, mejores, más rápidas, me gustaría tener muros más grandes, más oportunidades procedentes de personas siendo conscientes de mi práctica y de lo dedicado que estoy a ella. Así que ojalá grandes instituciones y grandes planeadores de ciudades me comisionen grandes esculturas en bronce para sus ciudades, porque saben que me comprometeré a hacer un buen trabajo.

Guay, y yo espero que se te presente la oportunidad de hacerlo ya que me gusta mucho tu trabajo, para ser honesto, y no lo digo porque sí, creo que es increíble. Gracias, te lo agradezco.

Anthony arrived at the lobby with a bottle of whiskey, half of it gone, and before joining us to start with the questionnaire, he seated by a piano that was in the dinning room. It was closed, so I had to ask the girl in the counter for the keys. Anthony played for a few minutes, then he closed it, drank a sip of the J&B bottle that never went too far away from his hands, and joined Marco and I on the sofa, willing to answer all of our questions as he finished and signed the 24 live-drawings he did the night before while three naked ladies posed for him at the party.

You are one of the few ‘street artists’ around the world that has managed to move from the walls on the street to the gallery scene.

How would you say you achieved this? Well, I guess I feel like I transferred from the gallery into the street more, only because I was doing a degree in Fine Art before I really took to painting in the streets, so I feel like my goals were always set to be an exhibiting artist in galleries… you know? Public galleries in mayor institutions, that has always been my primary goal. This street work, the public art, it came secondary to my studio practice.

And your style, for example, the one we can see on your street art, it comes from your studio practice or it just developed by itself on the streets? Well… - Anthony takes a long pause, something that will be recurrent throughout the whole interview, as if each time he is going to answer, he must be absolutely sure of the words he will employ- I guess it developed initially from having to be quick and effective in the street, that’s how my street style developed, but everything stems from the studio. When I’m working out how to draw something or how to do something effectively, efficiently and master it, it always comes from the studio, initially.

So most of your pieces, the ones that you do on the street, do they have a previous study and then you translate them onto the walls?

Not necessarily, no. Wall pieces can come very spontaneously and, usually, if I’m doing a street piece in an environment that I’m unfamiliar with, anything can happen, like the other day with the piece I did here in Barcelona, I thought I knew what I wanted to do when I saw the wall, but it was already night time by then, and it wasn’t until I came back the next day to see the work and what I had made, that I realized it was the wrong piece for the wall and that I needed to buff the wall and start again, in which case I knew exactly what I wanted to do, but I didn’t have a sketch at all for it, I just saw it in my mind and then manifested it. –Anthony’s first piece on the wall he mentions was of two superheroes getting married. After five hours working on it, he decided to buff the wall. Then he did a Spiderman crawling all aver the wall, to buff it again the next day. The final piece was a ballerina.

Talking about this piece you did here in Barcelona, when you first saw the video of the wall you were going to do, you had to pick the colors you were going to use immediately, very quickly.

Do you usually prefer to work like that when you are painting a wall or do you rather have the opportunity to take some time and develop the idea, and maybe two, three days later go to the wall?

Wow, well… that would be ideal. But having said that, the more time I have and the more options I have as far as colors, and the less boundaries I have, then the longer I will take to ponder. If I have ten minutes or ten years to consider what I’m going to do, then I will take ten minutes or ten years, so I feel less is more when it comes to what I need in order to create something. For example, I’ll make some of

my best work with limited resources, and I know this because some of the work that I have made that has taken me years to build, or has caused me the most pain, have usually come about from me having way too many options and way too much freedom.

Changing a little bit the subject, how much do you think the art scene is governed by appearances? Wow, I didn’t understand that question. Because, for example, some times galleries are organ-

izing exhibitions based more on the PR and ‘ fame’ of a certain artist, than on the actual work he or she is creating. Do you think this is incorrect or it actually happens? Well, of course that happens

and, I mean, it’s because galleries are running businesses, but when it comes down to it at the end of the day, when I collect art, which I do, I collect a lot of art, and trade a lot of art with a lot of friends, I only buy or collect art that I like, and I would like to think that galleries and other collectors operate in the same mind set, that they wouldn’t compromise their integrity just to either make money or give somebody an impression of themselves that’s incorrect. You know what I mean?

I wouldn’t hang someone’s art on my wall just because their name is Picasso, if my Picasso looks shit, then I wouldn’t hang it on my wall and I probably wouldn’t have bought it in the first place, but I have a beautiful Picasso, so I hang it.

In the art scene, the word aesthetics comes about often, a concept that is tightly tied to the one of beauty and frequently considered as subjective, nonetheless there are theories that attempt to translate it into a mathematical formula, like The Golden Ratio. Do you think there is a universal definition for aesthetics or beauty?

No, I don’t think there’s one that can be definitively graded and quantifiably exact, I think aesthetics is an ambiguous and abstract rationalization; you can’t be exact about it. But, having said that, there’s an aesthetic to saying ‘thank you’. Of course, that’s an abstract thought and I’m using it as a metaphor, because I’m saying whether or not something is beautiful. Saying ‘thank you’, whether if it’s intentional or it’s sarcastic, it’s still referencing the idea of being thankful for something, so whether the aesthetic is inaccurate according to whoever’s perception is grading it, it’s still an idea of something being beautiful... I think it’s a very interesting question.

Thank you (laughs). So, in a way you think that aesthetics and beauty cannot be universally defined, regardless, I believe it’s a concept that tends to be governed by the circumstances, by the period in time we are living in. For example, as a society, we tend to have, as a whole, a notion of beauty, and we all tend to agree on what is beautiful and what is not. Hence, do you think beauty is an ideal ruled by the era we live in and the culture we are being fed by the media and what we see on the streets?

I agree, I agree, aesthetics and the notion of beauty has changed over time and you just have to look at different cultures to see that in starving populations and during starving times of history, voluptuous women, larger women, were seen as much beautiful and more attractive to mate with. So I do think it’s potentially governed by the times. Having said that, we look at Egyptian paintings, we look at really ancient paintings of the past, and some of these things a really beautiful, but we have got to also understand, or at least define why we are calling something beautiful, because when we talk about the aesthetics of one thing, there’s the technique, there’s the skill involved in making it, and then there’s the subject matter itself. So you know, Goya’s etchings of the Peninsula War, at the time they did not want anyone to see them, they were grotesque, and these days they’re still

quite disturbing, but obviously they were made by a man with massive talent, and I wouldn’t say having someone beheaded and having their genitals cut off is beautiful, but aesthetically speaking it’s very comforting for the eyes.

Talking about comforting and disturbing, there’s this phrase constantly being repeated, ‘art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable’, do you agree? I think that’s a pretty bold statement. I forget who said that…-not far away from us, in the kitchen, the noise of silverware starts, in the meantime, Anthony rolls up a cigarette, though, clearly, you’re not allowed to smoke inside the hotel- I think it’s not my place to talk about what art should or shouldn’t do, I’m actually not comfortable using the word, it’s a very broad statement, but I like the idea of people being disturbed if they are too complacent in their lifestyles, and I don’t mean it in any detrimental way, but I think I like to be… ok, so I’m running around the answer. Look, I feel comfortable by looking at people in the eye on the street that maybe necessarily are avoided by other people, for example… and that’s a general statement too, how I am trying to answer this? I’m trying to answer by saying… - he takes another long pause and ponders about the answer. It’s important to clarify that this sentence is attributed to Banksy, and Lister has been considered before as the Australian Banksy, a title I doesn’t think he appreciates- I like the sound to that.

You had an exhibition entitled ‘The Beauty In Failure’. Where’s the beauty in failure? Ok, so I called this show once ‘The Beauty In Failure’, and I was referencing the absurdity or, at least, the perceived absurdity of competition. Someone can work their entire life to win a race, and someone can work their entire life to come second, and they might have been a nose from coming first, but they didn’t win the race, and I’d like to think that in the future, when I’m an old man looking back in high sight at my life, that I made the most of performing to the best of my ability, hindering the mindset of having others judge

me, being either the winner or the loser, the successful or the failure.

–The silverware noise increases gradually and goes from being almost imperceptible to annoying- So to answer your question, yes, I do think there is a lot of beauty in failure, but only if you don’t see failure in the context of the world, where there needs to be some sort of winner. I’m not too fast on competition, and I guess at the end of the day I don’t see anybody as being a failure, unless they had the idea in their mind that they were trying to beat somebody, and if that’s the case, then they failed in the first place.

Yeah, exactly, because I believe that the idea we have of the word failure is negative and it doesn’t have to be like that.

Failure sometimes can be constructive for something that will come later. Absolutely, it’s very important for someone to do their best, but only to do their best for the sake of them beating themselves. I’ve said before that you’re only as smart as your last decision and you’re only as good as your last production. –The silverware noise keeps on increasing and is becoming unbearable- When I say that, I always mean that I’m trying to do better work than the one I did yesterday and I’m trying to make smarter decisions, and I’m constantly slapped in the face by my own hand (laughs). But hopefully less hard each time.

When you are working what do you think translates more onto your pieces, your thoughts or your emotions? Oh, gosh… If I had to choose one I would say… -He takes a long pause and lights his cigarette- my spirit. Because is the spirit a thought or an emotion?

I don’t think so, I think the spirit is the activation of this archive of ancestral channels, and I don’t mean to sound… -Anthony loses concentration and looks intently at the woman who is arranging the silverware in the kitchen- Could she just stop with all those teeth pulling over there… no, it’s all right… -He looks at Marco- yeah maybe go give her a word… -Marco stands up and walks towards the kitchen- So, on spirit and feelings and thoughts, I’m responsible for my

thoughts, I’m responsible for my feelings, my feelings are a reaction to circumstances, my thoughts are my reaction to my intellect evolving and processing information. When it comes to the spirit, we can be conscious but we are often not, and we are not exactly responsible for our spirit, and that is why it’s something that … -the silverware noise stops and Marco comes back- good work on getting her to stop pulling teeth, gracias… We are not exactly responsible for our spirit, but we can try to be conscious of it, and once we are conscious of it then we can try to consciously direct it to evolution, whether it’s for good or bad, whether it’s for religion or something else. So, to answer your question, I would say I put more of my spirit into it, more than any thought or emotions.

they, oh it’s like that Eminem song, it’s some deep shit… Children are much better than me, and I’ve trained them to be better than me, and I don’t mean that in a skilled way, I just mean that they are better human beings than me, as a product of me sacrificing everything for this craft that has eaten from the outside in, it’s like they are bigger people than me because they have seen and lived this and they have transcended the cosmetic kind of infatuation that I obviously haven’t, like aesthetics, fuck… not so much making art but the fame and all that shit, you know? Like whatever dude… They are beautiful and wonderful people; they are much more grown than me… Heavy questions man… or maybe I’m just feeling heavy today, because I couldn’t give one answer to all of this stuff…

Talking about the spirit, are there any metaphysical beliefs translated into your works or you try to avoid that? Many metaphysical beliefs, none that I would actively communicate. I think awareness of spirit in general is a healthy thing. Whatever you call God is your business, and I call my power, whatever it is, God, to make it easier for other people to understand what I see as a high power, but to believe in a higher power, a higher being, is a very important thing, if one wants to move forward in giving a shit about shit like that. You know what I mean?

Well, sometimes is good to walk away from the rails and ask different stuff. So here comes another personal question, if you couldn’t make a living out of art, would it still be the only thing you would do? Well, I wouldn’t know how not to, it’s kind of my passion. I mean, I have skated for longer that I have painted and drawn, but that sort of thing, it’s not that you grow out of it, it grows out of you, you know? So this is one of those things that from early on I knew that I would be able to do for a long time. Would I still be doing it? Yes. And it would be easy for me to say that and not be true, just for the sake of saying it, but I believe that it is true; my grandmother was still a painter at 91, before she died, she was still painting pictures, and I think it’s in my blood.

Yes, I do. Talking about manifestations, in your opinion, is there any higher manifestation than love and, if there is, what does it have to do with art? Ok, a higher manifestation than love is…

I don’t know if there’s a higher manifestation than love, is that what the question is? Yes. Ok, well, the only thing bigger than love is yourself, because that’s what you have power over, that’s the God of self, and then the bigger manifestation of self is definitely God, the awareness of something bigger than you, and then something that even overpowers that God is children, so it’s not until you have children that you, or I felt like, it wasn’t until I had children that any ideal of self or God or anything else… -he takes another long pause to organize his thoughts- For my children I would kill God, you know? For my children I would stand in front of a car, I would burn and I would not scream for my children to survive, you know?

Of course. What is the biggest lesson your children have taught you? Oh wow, there are so many and there’s no stopping. So to narrow a little bit more the question, a lesson you can translate into your pieces or into your work. Oh all right, into work. You see, it’s a difficult thing, because here I am, on the other side of the world for my children, I miss my children, and they’ve taught me that money and fame and making paintings, it doesn’t cuddle you at night, because this whole thing has cost me so much time with my children that I will never get back. It’s a love-hate relationship I’m kind of… What have my children taught me? They’ve taught me that

And now, talking about the event that happened last night here, in Barcelona, how do you feel about it, are you satisfied with how everything turned out? Yeah, sure. It was a great party and the trench coats look great, I’m happy to have left a wall behind in Barcelona that I’m happy with, and everybody here and in the whole thing has been great, to work with Volcom has been dope.

And do you have any expectations for the upcoming shows?

Expectations are difficult because they leave room for disappointment, but I expect that I will endeavor to be positive and yeah, look, I like things to be bigger, better, faster, I’d like to have bigger walls, and more opportunities come from more people being aware of my practice and how dedicated I am to it. So hopefully major institutions and major city planners will want to commission me to make large bronze sculptures in their cities, because they know that I’ll commit to making good work.

Many consider Steve McCurry a photojournalist, probably one of the best.

Nonetheless, his very rich career, which has spanned for over thirty years, demonstrates that his craft goes well beyond that: he is a proficient storyteller.

His snaps materialize our dreams, capturing all those places we’ve fantasized to visit but might never will. Anyway, there they are, frozen in time, waiting, challenging us into action. The Afghan Girl es una imagen icónica. ¿Tener una obra tan reconocida y famosa alrededor del mundo es una bendición o una maldición? Es un honor ser el fotógrafo que capturó dicha imagen.

Ha vencido el paso del tiempo, lo cual refuerza su estatus, pero, especialmente, el del sujeto, Sharbat Gula. Me resulta asombroso que esa fotografía sea conocida en todo el mundo. Después de todos estos años todavía la encuentro muy poderosa.

Has viajado alrededor del mundo miles de veces. ¿Cuál es el lugar más especial para ti y a cuál te gustaría ir que aún no has visitado? Asia del Sur -incluyendo la India, del Tíbet hacia el norte, de Sri Lanka hacia el sur y de Birmania hacia el este- ha sido uno de los lugares más importantes donde he trabajado durante mi carrera como fotógrafo. La India fue el primer lugar que visité, siendo aún muy joven, y desde entonces he regresado muchas veces, atraído por su rica mezcla de culturas y costumbres. Fue un descubrimiento increíble para mí. Allí encontré nuevas culturas y aprendí sobre el budismo, el hinduismo, el jainismo y el sijismo. Es un país que he visitado más que cualquier otro, y desde la primera vez, en 1978, he visto su transformación económica y social. No puedes encontrar otro con una geografía tan rica y variada, y con una cultura como esa, entre el caos y la confusión. Con el paso de las años nunca me he cansado de la India, siempre es interesante y nunca se acaban las cosas nuevas para ver allí. La China también ha sido muy importante para mí, y es tan profunda en su propia manera, tan fascinante e interesante como lo es la India. Madagascar e Irán son dos lugares que deseo visitar desde hace ya algún tiempo. También he viajado recientemente a Cuba, creando nuevas imágenes allí. La Habana es como una máquina del tiempo hacia la década de los cuarenta o cincuenta, y su arquitectura es maravillosa. Hay algunos lugares a los cuales aún debo viajar, y Cuba era uno de ellos hace unos seis años.

Para cuando empecé mi carrera fotográfica, en los setenta, Estados Unidos y Cuba ya habían cortado relaciones diplomáticas, en 1961.

Desde el 2010 he viajado en múltiples ocasiones.

Estás en Barcelona y Madrid presentando tu nuevo libro, publicado por Phaidon, titulado Sobre la Lectura. Háblanos de él y por qué es importante para ti. Mi nuevo libro, Sobre la Lectura, muestra a gente de todas partes del mundo, jóvenes y viejos, ricos y pobres, todos ellos leyendo: libros, periódicos, revistas. Están leyendo en estaciones de tren, en templos o parques. Leer es una de las cosas que nos conecta, que nos recuerda que somos iguales: nuestra humanidad compartida. Te daré dos ejemplos de porqué leer ha sido importante e inspirador en mi vida, y las conexiones que he hecho a partir de este hábito. En mi primer viaje a la India estuve enfermo con disentería y confinado a una cama, después de pasar por una serie de inyecciones muy dolorosas contra la rabia, leí El gran bazar del ferrocarril, por Paul Theroux. Me encantó esa novela, y pensé que podría ser una historia fotográfica maravillosa. Muchos años después, Paul y yo colaboramos en dicho proyecto –yo tomé las fotos y Paul escribió los textos- aquel se convertiría en mi primer libro, El camino imperial (1985). Otra historia: En 1961, cuando tenía once años, leí una historia fotográfica sobre los monzones en la India en la revista LIFE, realizada por el famoso fotógrafo de la casa Mágnum, Brian Brake. Veinte años más tarde, inspirado por las fotografías de Brake, viajé a Asia para retratar el mismo clima que ocasionan los monzones. Aquellas imágenes de mis viajes a través de la China, India, Indonesia, Bangladés, Nepal y Sri Lanka se convertirían más tarde en mi segundo libro, Monzón (1988). A comienzos de este año, tuve el orgullo de formar parte de la exhibición Picturing Asia: Double Take – The Photography of Brian Brake and Steve McCurry, donde se destacaban no solo mis imágenes de monzones, sino también aquellas de Brian Brake que vi a los once años en la páginas de LIFE.

¿Utilizas Instagram como una herramienta fotográfica inmediata o como un medio para destacar tus obras y compartir noticias tuyas? En realidad, la fotografía digital no ha cambiado la manera en la cual yo veo o fotografío. Sin lugar a dudas ha cambiado mi proceso, permitiéndome trabajar con mucha menos luz y en situaciones más difíciles que en el pasado, pero las mismas verdades se aplican a cualquier imagen, sin importar la técnica que se empleó para crearla. Hay una impermanencia en todas las cosas y cierta nostalgia en cuanto al pasado, pero yo prefiero mirar hacia el futuro. Así que sí, utilizo Instagram y Facebook como recursos para compartir noticias mías y mi trabajo. Debido a las redes sociales, algunas personas ahora son más reservadas en cuanto a ser fotografiadas. Saben que una imagen puede hacerse viral, o ser colgada en muchos sitios web. Hace veinte años, no creo que mucha gente llevara consigo constantemente una cámara fotográfica, incluso los fotógrafos, muchas veces ni yo llevaba una cámara conmigo. Ahora, con los teléfonos móviles, todo el mundo lleva consigo una cámara.

Y muchos móviles incluso sacan mejores fotos que algunas cámaras antiguas. Yo he estado publicando algunas de mis fotos hechas con el móvil en libros fotográficos, así que este aparato se ha convertido en una herramienta significativa en el arte de la fotografía.

Todos podemos documentar nuestras vidas con relativamente poco esfuerzo: amigos, familiares, cumpleaños, bodas, cenas. Pero eso no quiere decir que todas esas imágenes sean buenas, así como todos esos mensajes de texto y correos electrónicos no son literatura. La gran mayoría de las cosas que escribimos en los mensajes de texto no son gran poesía: pero podrían serlo, así como es posible hacer buenas fotografías con la cámara del móvil. Aún así, todas esas nuevas imágenes siendo tomadas, no quieren decir que todo el mundo vaya a ser un gran fotógrafo, así como todos esos textos y correos electrónicos no hacen a todo el mundo un gran escritor. Aunque a mí me gusta creer que todos nos estamos volviendo más instruidos visualmente. ¿Crees que una parte de ti se ve reflejada en tus fotografías? ¿Es eso posible cuando estás capturando la realidad? Cuando viajo a diferentes lugares, fotografío las cosas que me interesan, que me intrigan. Son huellas o rasgos personales en mi trabajo, un tipo de visión poética. Las fotos pasan a ser mi memoria de esos lugares, y a menudo se enfocan en las personas y su humanidad.

Nuestra revista tiene un lema: RIDE LIFE. ¿Qué significa para ti? RIDE LIFE parece implicar que la vida es un gran viaje, y el cabalgar la vida es una acción donde puedes seguir tus pasiones.

Ese lema me recuerda uno de mis axiomas o filosofías de vida, el cual es SIGUE TU PASIÓN. Una de las lecciones más importantes que me debo recordar constantemente es buscar situaciones e involucrarme en cosas que me apasionen y me importen, historias que signifiquen algo para mí. Al final del día, las imágenes que me importan y pienso que son interesantes y exitosas, son aquellas que retratan situaciones con las cuales conecté de manera profunda.

Después de Sobre la Lectura, ¿en qué proyectos estás trabajando? A dónde viajo y en qué estoy trabajando es algo que cambia constantemente, además de ser una lista muy numerosa. Siempre estoy trabajando en el libro que viene, incluyendo un libro que estoy haciendo a largo plazo sobre la cultura budista, también tengo pendientes nuevas exposiciones alrededor del mundo. Tras todos estos años, mi curiosidad sobre el mundo continua insaciable, lo cual es esencial para un fotógrafo.

The Afghan Girl is an iconic photograph. Do you think having shot an image so recognizable and famous around the world is a blessing or a curse? It’s an honor to be the photographer who took that iconic picture. It has stood the test of time, which is a testament to the picture, but especially the subject, Sharbat Gula. It is amazing to me that this picture is known all over the world. After all these years I still find the image powerful.

You have traveled around the world a thousand times. Which place has been the most special for you? Which one would you like to visit for the first time? South Asia —including India, Tibet to the North, Sri Lanka to the South, and Burma to the East— has been one of the most important places where I’ve worked over the course of my career as a photographer. India was the first place I traveled to as a young photographer, and I’ve returned there many times, drawn to its rich mix of cultures and customs. India was an incredible discovery for me. It was where I encountered new cultures and learned more about Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. I have visited India more than any other country, and since my first visit in 1978, I have seen India’s economic and social transformation. You cannot find another country with such a rich and varied geography and culture amid chaos and confusion. Over the years I never get tired of India nor run out of new things to see there, it is always interesting. China has also been very important to me, and has such great depth; in its own way, China is just as fascinating and interesting to me as India. Madagascar and Iran are two places on my travel wish list; I’ve wanted to travel there for some time. Also, I’ve been traveling to Cuba, and making some new images there. Havana is a time capsule of the 1940’s or 1950’s, and has amazing architecture. There are few places I’ve yet to travel, and Cuba was one of those places until only about six years ago. By the time I had started my career in photography in the ’70s, the U.S. and Cuba had already cut all diplomatic ties in 1961. Since 2010, I’ve made multiple trips.

You are in Barcelona and Madrid presenting your new book with Phaidon, On Reading. Tell us about this book, how is it special for you? My new book, On Reading, shows people from around the world, young and old, rich and poor, all reading: books, newspapers, magazines. They are reading while in train stations or in temples or in parks. Reading is one of the things that connects us all together, that reminds us that we’re all the same: our shared humanity. I’ll give you two examples of how reading has been important and inspirational in my life, and the connections made from reading. On my first trip to India, I was sick with dysentery and confined to a bed, after going through a series of painful injections for rabies, I read The Great Railway Bazaar by Paul Theroux. I loved that book, and thought it would be a wonderful picture story. Several years later, Paul and I collaborated on the project —I shot the photos and Paul provided some text— that would end up becoming my first book, The Imperial Way (1985). Another story: In 1961, when I was 11 years old, I read a photo story on the Indian monsoon in LIFE magazine, shot by the celebrated Magnum photographer Brian Blake. Twenty years later, inspired by Brake’s photographs, I traveled to Asia to capture the same monsoon weather phenomenon. Those photos from my travels through China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka would become my second book, Monsoon (1988). Earlier this year, I was proud to be part of The Asia Society Hong Kong Center’s exhibit Picturing Asia: Double Take – The Photography of Brian Brake and Steve McCurry, which

featured not only my own monsoon images but also the Brian Brake photos that I first saw as an eleven-year-old boy in the pages of LIFE. Do you use Instagram as an immediate photographic tool or to showcase your work and news? Digital photography hasn’t really changed the way I see or the way I photograph. It has certainly changed my process — allowing me to work in much lower light and more difficult situations than I could in the past— but the same truths apply to any image regardless of the technique that went into crafting it. There’s impermanence about all things and nostalgia about things in the past, but I prefer to look to the future. So I do use Instagram and Facebook as resources to share news and my work.

With social media, some people are much more guarded nowadays of being photographed. They know an image can go viral, or be posted on so many websites. Twenty years ago, I don’t think many people carried a camera around: even as a photographer, I often didn’t have a camera with me. Now, with cell phones, everyone is always carrying a camera with them. And many cell phones shoot better quality photos than some of the old cameras did. I’ve actually been publishing some of my cell phone pictures in photography books, so the cell phone has become a serious tool for the art of photography. We can all now document our lives fairly effortlessly: friends, families, birthdays, weddings, dinners. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the images are all good, just as most of all the texts and emails are not literature. Most of what we’re writing in text messages is not great poetry, but it could be, in the same way that it’s possible to make good photographs with the cell phone. With all the new images being taken, it doesn’t mean everyone is going to be a great photographer, just as all the texts and emails don’t mean everyone is a great writer. But I like to believe that we are all becoming more visually literate.

Do you think we can see any representation of yourself in your photographs? Is that possible when you are capturing reality?

When I travel to places, I photograph the things that interest me, that intrigue me. Those are the footprints or personal signatures in my work, a kind of poetic vision. The photos become my memory of the places, and often they are focused on people and their humanity.

Our magazine has a motto: RIDE LIFE. What does it mean to you? RIDE LIFE seems to imply that life is a great journey, and riding life is an action where you can pursue your passions. That motto reminds me of one of my maxims or life philosophies, which is FOLLOW YOUR PASSION. One of the most important lessons that I always remind myself is to look for situations and be involved in things I have passion for and care about, stories that have meaning.

At the end of the day, the pictures that I care about and I think are interesting and successful, are pictures and situations that I felt very deeply about. One needs passion to do your best work, to be involved in situations that give purpose to your life. My work, my art, my photography: is something I’ll do until my last breath.

After On Reading, which projects are you up to? Where I travel to and what I’m working on is constantly changing and too numerous to list. I’m always working on the next book project, including a long-term book project on Buddhist culture, and on new exhibitions around the world. After all these years, I still have an insatiable curiosity about the world, which is essential for a photographer.

MATEUSZ La pasión como un regalo

Mateusz Staniewski es un fotógrafo polaco que ha pasado los últimos cuatro años fotografiando el día a día en el MACBA, uno de los spots de skate más importantes de Europa y del mundo. Su trabajo va más allá de la acción, ya que supera los trucos y se enfoca en el ambiente y la atmósfera que un lugar como este respira, traduciéndolo en imágenes de un safari urbano lleno de personajes únicos y paisajes metropolitanos. En estos cuatro años Mateusz ha tenido la oportunidad de ver a muchos niños crecer y evolucionar de pequeños bandidos a adolescentes cubiertos de tatuajes que derrapan sobre el suelo de granito, y todo ha sido documentado en metros y más metros de película que ha logrado capturar gracias a su cámara antigua. El resultado es una serie con más de cien imágenes reveladas como Dios manda, a la antigua usanza. Gracias a este increíble trabajo, se realizará una exposición durante el mes de diciembre en la Church Street Tattoo Studio.

Mateusz Staniewski is a Polish photographer that has spent the last four years photographing the day-to-day scene at the MACBA, one of the main skateboarding spots in Europe and the world. His works go beyond the action, as they surpass the tricks and focus on the mood and atmosphere a place like this radiates, translating it into images of an urban safari filled with singular characters and metropolitan landscapes. In these four years he has got to see many kids grow up and evolve from innocent little rascals into tattoo-covered teenagers that shred along the granite floors and ledges, and it’s all documented in meters and meters of film he has been able to capture thanks to his vintage camera. The result is a series of over one hundred images developed as God intended, in the good old-fashioned way. Thanks to this huge body of work, an exhibition will be set up throughout the month of December at the Church Street Tattoo Studio.

¿Cómo nació tu interés por la fotografía? Creo que tenía quince años cuando conocí la fotografía analógica. Mi padre me enseñó la cámara y empecé a tomar fotografías de mis amigos. Era una cámara Zenit muy antigua, hecha en Rusia. Luego tomé un curso para aprender a trabajar en el cuarto oscuro, revelando la película, por ese entonces fotografiaba en blanco y negro; así fue como empezó todo. Después hubo una pequeña pausa, experimenté un poco con la fotografía digital con mis amigos, para volver más tarde a la fotografía analógica. ¿Recuerdas el primer proyecto serio que realizaste? En realidad no, a lo largo de todos estos años he estado simplemente capturando una colección aleatoria de imágenes de mis amigos. Tal vez en unos años podré hacer algo con ello. Saco fotos de mi familia y de mis amigos mientras pasan el rato, y luego, (después de un par de meses, ya que trabajo en analógico y me toma un tiempo revelar e imprimir) les regalo las imágenes impresas.

Has estado trabajando en un proyecto capturando el día a día en el MACBA y expondrás el resultado en un nuevo tattoo shop en Barcelona. ¿Qué nos puedes contar al respecto? Se trata de una colección de más de cien fotos que empecé a hacer hace más de cuatro años cuando me mudé cerca del MACBA. En mi caminata diaria a comprar pan siempre llevaba mi cámara conmigo, así que cada vez que me cruzaba con algo interesante, me detenía e intentaba capturarlo. Es una observación diaria de cuatro años sobre la vida que se desarrolla en el MACBA. Yo no patino, por lo que la dinámica natural que allí ocurre llamó mi atención en seguida, lo que estos tíos pueden hacer, su destreza y habilidad; estaba realmente impresionado. Entonces empecé a pasar más y más tiempo allí, y logré tener cada vez más imágenes. Están tomadas únicamente durante el día, así que no se trata de una observación completa de lo que sucede en el MACBA, ya que la escena nocturna allí es una historia totalmente distinta. Trabajo durante el día debido a que se trata de fotografía analógica, así que cuando el sol se pone detrás de los edificios, los colores que obtienes son muy hermosos, y eso solo sucede durante dos o tres horas al día.

Has dicho que tus ideas evolucionan a través de tu experiencia diaria, ¿cómo se inició tu relación con el skateboarding? Al observar lo que sucede en el MACBA. Como he dicho, yo no patino, pero durante los últimos cuatro años he visto tantos kickflips que estoy convencido de que puedo hacerlos, lo que es una gran mentira, seguramente si lo intento terminaré en el hospital (risas). Pero el proyecto no se enfoca únicamente en los trucos, se trata más del ambiente y la atmósfera que se respira allí, y eso es lo que quería transmitir en mis imágenes. Primero empecé imprimiendo la fotos y, como ya lo había hecho con mis amigos y familiares, regresé al MACBA a repartirlas, prints pequeños de 15x15 centímetros, a quienes aparecían en ellas.

Las reacciones fueron buenas, muchos de ellos se sorprendían, para algunos era la primera vez que veían una fotografía impresa –debemos entender que muchos de estos chicos son adolescentes-. Uno de ellos me preguntó, después de haberle tomado una foto a un grupo, si la podía ver enseguida, en Instagram o algo por el estilo, otra vez le entregué el print a este tío, un adolescente, y me dijo que estaba sorprendido porque parecía como si fuese una imagen hecha en los años setenta. Cada vez las reacciones son diferentes, pero creo que eso nos dice mucho acerca de la fotografía y cómo es percibida hoy en día, es decir, en la actualidad todo el mundo es fotógrafo, ves a la personas en el MACBA tomando fotos con sus teléfonos, y creo que lo que yo hago ayuda a diferenciar la fotografía analógica de la digital.

Con la fotografía analógica debes ser paciente, necesitas tiempo, tiras del gatillo y la imagen desaparece, y no la vuelves a ver hasta que revelas la película, es como abrir regalos en Navidad, algunas veces incluso olvidas algunas de las fotografías que tomaste.

¿Has patinado alguna vez? Un par de veces estando borracho, aunque no recuerdo mucho. No intenté hacer ningún kickflip (risas).

Si tuvieses que describir la escena que se desarrolla en el MACBA todos los días, en tres palabras, ¿cuáles serían? ¿En tres palabras?

Imposible. Pero diría que es la meca del skateboarding en Europa.

Siempre hay mucha vida, es bullicio, una explosión de colores.

Siempre regreso al tema del color porque es lo que más me llama la atención, y eso lo podréis ver en la exposición. Ahora, pensándolo bien, si tuviese que definir la escena que sucede allí en tres palabras, diría que se trata de una ‘explosión de colores’. ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas viviendo en Barcelona? Llevo viviendo aquí siete u ocho años. ¿Y qué hizo que eligieses esta ciudad? Sucedió hace diez años cuando estaba viajando junto con mi novia y mis amigos y paramos en Barcelona por un par de días. Nos perdimos en una de las calles del barrio Gótico y recuerdo que ese fue el momento en el cual me enamoré de la ciudad, ahí mismo supe que debía regresar.

En estos siete u ocho años que has vivido aquí, ¿qué es lo que más te ha sorprendido? El hecho de que la gente sale de marcha muy tarde. En Polonia la peña se reúne alrededor de las 21 horas, en Barcelona se junta como pronto a media noche, lo que me sorprende mucho.

Has dicho que tus conceptos y sujetos varían a medida que mezclas técnicas y experimentas. ¿Hay alguna característica principal en cuanto a concepto o técnica que no cambie a lo largo de todo tu trabajo? Con mis amigos experimentamos con la luz en la fotografía digital hace unos años. Creo que logramos llevarlo a cierto nivel; ahora lo que me gustaría hacer es llevar a cabo esos experimentos con la fotografía analógica. ¿Y cómo planeas experimentar con la luz? Utilizando diferentes stencils. En un principio empezamos pintando y escribiendo con luz, luego, con un amigo, tuvimos la idea de construir una caja de luz y poner el stencil dentro. Después utilizaríamos una lámpara con flash para capturar la imagen, así el stencil quedaría dentro de la fotografía, como si estuviese flotando en el aire. ¿Así que podemos decir que este concepto o idea está presente en tu cabeza esperando a su realización? Sí, así es, de hecho ya hemos realizado algunas pruebas. Estoy planeando empujar esto un poco más lejos, llevando más allá la técnica del stencil de luz, el cual se hace pintando algo en un pedazo de papel para luego intentar ponerlo en el aire a través de la luz. La idea es jugar con los stencils y el color en la fotografía analógica. ¿Cuáles consideras tus principales influencias? Últimamente me ha llamado mucho la atención el trabajo de Hans Bellmer, el cual está relacionado con un proyecto que acabo de terminar con mi novia.

También, cuando hablamos de fotografía de formato medio, debemos nombrar, sin lugar a dudas, a Diane Arbus, otro referente para mí. ¿Qué significa para ti el concepto RIDE LIFE? Para mí, Ride Life significa hacer lo que amas, simplemente porque lo amas. Lo que sea que te motive, debes seguirlo. ¿Podrías contarnos tu sueño para toda la vida? Continuar haciendo lo que hago, que es fotografiar a mi familia, a mis amigos y a desconocidos, para luego imprimir las imágenes y dárselas a cambio, y sorprenderlos.

Con la fotografĂ­a analĂłgica debes ser paciente, necesitas tiempo, disparas y la imagen desaparece, y no la vuelves a ver hasta que revelas la pelĂ­cula.

How did you first become interested in photography? I think I was fifteen when I was first introduced to analog photography.

My father showed me the camera and I started taking pictures of my friends. It was a very old Zenit camera, made in Russia. Then I took some dark room classes, to learn how to develop the film, at the time I was mainly working on black and white; that’s how it all started. Then I had a little break, I experimented a bit with digital photography with my friends and then I decided to go back to analog.

Do you remember the first serious project you carried out? Not really, throughout these years I’ve just been shooting a collection of random pictures of my friends. So maybe in a couple of year’s time I’ll be able to put something together. Basically, what I do is shoot family and friends while they’re hanging out and then -after a couple of months, because it’s analog so it takes time to develop and print-, I give the prints to them.

You’ve been working for the past few years on a project shooting the day-to-day life at the MACBA, which will soon be exhibited at a new tattoo shop in Barcelona, what can you tell us about it? It’s a collection of over one hundred photos that I started doing over four years ago when I moved next to MACBA. On my daily walk to buy some bread I always had my camera with me, so every time I came across something interesting I stopped and tried to capture it. So it’s a four-year observation of the daily life that unfolds at the MACBA. I’m not a skateboarder, so the natural dynamics that happen there attracted me right away, what these guys could do, their skills; I was honestly impressed. So I started spending more and more time over there, and with time I got more pictures. They are shot only at daytime, so it’s not a complete observation of the MACBA scene, because what happens at night is a completely different story. I shot during the day because of the fact that it’s analog photography; when the sun is behind the buildings you get this very beautiful colors, and that lasts just for two or three hours a day.

You have said your ideas evolve through everyday experience, how did your relationship with skateboarding begin? By observing what was going on at the MACBA. As I said, I’m not a skateboarder, but for the last four years I’ve seen so many kickflips that I’m convinced that I can do them, which is completely bullshit, if I try I’ll probably end up in the hospital (laughs). But the project is not focused on the tricks, is more about the mood, the atmosphere, this is what I wanted to convey through my pictures. First I started printing out the pictures, like I did for my friends and family, and going back to MACBA giving out small 6x6 inch prints to the people that appeared on them. The reactions were good, they were surprised, for some of them it was the first time they saw a printed photograph -we must have into account that many of these kids are teenagers-. One of them asked me, after I took a picture of a group, if he could see the image right away, on Instagram or something like that, another time, I gave a photo to this guy, a teenager, and he said he was surprised because it looked like it was from the seventies. Every time you get different reactions, but I think that tells you something about photography and how it is perceived nowadays, I mean, everyone is a photographer right now, you see people at the MACBA shooting with a smartphone, so I think that what I do helps differentiate between analog and digital photography. With analog photography you have to be patient, you need some time, you pull the trigger and then the image disappears, you don’t see it again until you develop the film, it’s like unpacking Christmas gifts, you even sometimes forget about some of the pictures you have taken.

Have you ever skateboard before? A couple of times when I was drunk, I don’t remember much. I remember I didn’t try to do a kickflip (laughs).

If you had to describe the skateboarding scene that takes place every day at the MACBA in three words, which would they be? In three words? Impossible. But I would say is one of Europe’s Mecca for skateboarding. There’s a lot of life happening there, it’s bustling, an explosion of colors. I always come back to the colors because it was the thing that attracted me the most, you will be able to see that at the exhibition. Now, if I come to think about it, if I had to define it in three words, I would say ‘explosion of colors’.

For how long have you been living in Barcelona? I’ve been living in Barcelona for seven or eight years.

And what made you choose Barcelona? It happened when I was hitchhiking with my girlfriend and friends ten years ago, and we stopped in Barcelona for a couple of days. We got lost in one of the streets of the Gothic quarter and I remember that was the moment when I fell in love with the city, right there I knew I had to come back.

In these seven or eight years that you have been living here, what has surprised you the most about the city? The fact that everyone goes out partying very late. In Poland you meet up with the people around nine o’clock, in Barcelona you get together at midnight at least, that really surprised me.

You’ve said your concepts and subjects vary as you mingle techniques and experiment. Is there a main characteristic in concept or technique that does not change throughout your complete body of work? With my friends we started experimenting with light in digital photography a few years ago. I think we managed to push it to a certain level; now what I would like to do is to carry out these experiments with analog photography.

And how are you planning to experiment with light? By using different light stencils. We started painting and writing with light and then, with a friend, we came up with the idea of building a light box and put the stencil inside, then we would shoot using a flash lamp, and like that the stencil stays on the picture, like if it was floating in the air.

So we could say that this concept or idea that is currently in your head, is just waiting for its realization? Yes, actually it is, and we have already carried out some experiments. I’m planning to push a bit forward the light stencil technique, which is carried out by painting something on a piece of paper to later try and put it in the air through light. The idea is to play with the light stencils and color in analog photography.

Who would you consider to be your main influences? Lately I’ve been attracted to the works of Hans Bellmer, which are deeply connected to a project I just finished with my girlfriend. Also, when we talk about middle format photography, I would have to name, of course, Diane Arbus, another referent of mine.

What does the concept RIDE LIFE say to you? For me, Ride Life means to do what you love to do, just for the love of doing it. What ever drives you, you should follow it.

Could you tell us a lifelong dream? To continue doing what I’m doing, which is shooting pictures of my family, friends and people I don’t know.

Then I can print the images and give them in return, and surprise them.

REVIEW / SVRF PVNK INVITATIONAL Tres chicas, una caravana de alquiler con nada que envidiar al autobús de gira de Beyonce, mucha birra y una botella de Jägermeister con un tamaño acorde al de nuestra mansión para esos días. El fin de semana de chicas que llevábamos días planeando con el V SVRF PVNK INVITACIONAL como telón de fondo, comenzaba con un fiestón en toda regla. ¿Qué esperar de eso? ¡Pues qué os vamos a contar! Sólo lo que queramos, el resto nos lo guardamos. Es verdad que las condiciones meteorológicas no acompañaron y el surf escaseó, hasta bien entrado el domingo, momento en el que para nosotras se acababa la fiesta y teníamos que volver a casa, pero sí hubo mucho punk, amigos, patín y barriles de cerveza. Nada más llegar al local de los chicos de Rosny Beer (cerveza artesanal francesa y deliciosa por cierto), nos encontramos en el paraíso y Juan, uno de los organizadores y miembro del collectivo SWITCHEDkickout, nos fue presentando a toda la gente. Rampa de skate, tattoo zone, SVRF PVNK lottery, rincón del cannabis: una especie de Disneylandia para adultos.

Three girls, a rented caravan that could might as well been Beyoncé’s touring bus, plenty of beer and a bottle of Jägermeister big enough for the adventure we were about to embark on. The girl’s weekend we had been planning for days around the fifth edition of the SVRF PVNK INVITATIONAL was scheduled to begin as one magnificent party. And we are going to tell you everything about it. Well not everything, only what we want to, the rest we are keeping for ourselves. It’s true that the tide conditions were not the best and hence, there wasn’t too much surfing until Sunday afternoon, the precise moment the party had to end for us, but we did have a lot of punk, friends, skateboarding and what seemed to be a never-ending supply of kegs. The doors of heaven opened for us as soon as we arrived to the Rosny Beer stand -a delicious French crafted beer- were we met Juan, one of the event officers and a member of the SWITCHEDkickout collective. He was in charge of introducing us to everyone. The venue was sort of a Disneyland for adults; skate ramps, tattoo zone, SVRF PVNK lottery and a cannabis corner, what else could we ask for?

Al primero que pillamos por banda fue a Koopa Tattoo, un tatuador francés que ha estado presente en este festival desde su primera edición. Su estilo puede catalogarse dentro del old school y, lo creáis o no, esta fue la primera entrevista que le han hecho en su vida.

Primicia.

Koopa, cuéntanos, ¿qué es lo más difícil de ser tatuador? Primero, no es algo fácil de aprender, también es difícil trabajar con la gente, con los clientes, porque te tienes que llevar bien con personas de todo tipo, cada una con un estilo diferente, y todos tienen que quedar contentos.

A veces debes tatuar cosas que no te gustan, y lo que es realmente difícil es no hacer algo que resulte una mierda (risas). También algo complicado para un tatuador, como podéis ver, es responder preguntas en una entrevista, esta es la primera que lo hago (risas). ¿Por qué habéis escogido el nombre Koopa? Yo no lo escogí. Mis amigos lo eligieron por mí. Todo empezó cuando era muy joven; cada uno de nosotros tiene un nombre procedente de Mario Bros. A uno lo llamamos Princesa Daisy (risas), aunque hoy no lo llamaremos así, no aquí. Hace quince años que llevo ese mote. ¿Cuándo decidiste convertirte en tatuador? He trabajado como tatuador durante ocho años ya, aunque me gustan los tatuajes desde que era muy joven, tal vez desde que tenía quince o dieciséis años. Siempre me ha gustado dibujar, así que trabajar como tatuador fue una buena elección, ya que me permite dibujar todos los días y eso es lo que quería.

Cuando mi tatuador me preguntó un día si quería empezar a trabajar con él en su estudio, por supuesto le dije que sí. Ahora puedo escuchar punk rock todo el día, dibujar y empezar a trabajar a la hora que me plazca, es un buen estilo de vida, pas mal. ¿Recuerdas cuál fue el primer tatuaje que hiciste por el que te pagaron? Claro que lo recuerdo, fue realmente difícil; por ese entonces ya había tatuado a algunos de mis amigos, pero no es lo mismo trabajar con un amigo que con un cliente, es algo completamente diferente. ¿Hay algo que no tatuarías jamás? No tatuaría símbolos Nazis o políticos extraños, o alguna palabra que no entienda, aunque si viene alguien con una palabra en español, no os preocupéis, español entiendo (risas). Algunas veces se presentan personas con palabras en portugués, español o inglés, y si yo no estoy seguro, ya que no hablo ninguno de esos idiomas perfectamente, el cliente debe estar seguro de lo que se va a tatuar, ya que yo no puedo corregirlo.

Has estado presente en el SVRF PVNK Invitational desde su primera edición. ¿Qué te parece? Es un gran desorden (risas). ¿Qué puedo decir? Es divertido, difícil para nosotros al trabajar, y creo que este será el mejor año. A mí me gusta mucho la idea, muchos de mis amigos están aquí, y puedo trabajar haciendo lo que me gusta.

Al poco rato, Koopa ya estaba haciendo su magia, tatuando una pantera increíble sobre un chiflado. Mientras tanto, nosotros caminábamos entre una multitud que bebía cerveza y se divertía con todo el montaje, hasta que nos encontramos con unos tíos británicos –cambiar acento de francés a británico- que empezaron una banda hace seis meses y han logrado algo de éxito, aunque no nos sorprende, ya que desde su actitud hasta su sonido, representan de manera auténtica el concepto heavy-punk que sale a la luz en sus canciones. También nos reímos mucho con ellos, mientras nos explicaban de qué va Yo No Se. Contadnos el origen de Yo No Sé. Jason y yo (Al) solíamos estar en una banda que se llamaba The Bad Joke That Ended Well y luego en otra, Factotum, luego decidimos empezar una nueva. Queríamos tocar algo más grungy y progresivo, ahí fue cuando se nos unió Sam, y él es el mejor baterista, así que todo funcionó muy bien (risas). Sólo llevamos seis meses tocando juntos y ya tenemos un álbum en camino.

Como nos contáis, estáis trabajando en vuestro primer álbum. ¿Qué ha sido lo mejor y lo peor de este proceso? Lo peor es el dinero

(risas), puesto que no tenemos nada de pasta, aparte de eso todo va de maravilla. Como nos gusta tocar duro, realmente pesado, es un proceso muy divertido para nosotros. En algunas de las otras bandas donde hemos estado, sólo tocábamos lo necesario, pero en Yo No Sé nos juntamos con la idea de ser pesados, y cada vez se ha vuelto más y más pesado, y eso es muy divertido, ¿sabes? Dejarlo todo en el escenario. También queríamos hacer las canciones antes de tocar en los conciertos, porque una vez empiezas a tocar en vivo no te queda mucho tiempo para crear canciones, así que grabamos antes de tener muchos shows, lo hicimos al revés, lo cual es bueno para el álbum, aunque todavía no lo hayamos terminado (risas). Dominic Mitchison es quien lo está grabando, es muy guay y lo hace muy bien, además es muy divertido y bastante barato en realidad, simplemente estamos siendo bastante roñosos con el dinero (risas). ¿Por qué habéis decidido nombrar vuestra banda Yo No Sé? Hay una banda mexicana que se llama Los Dug Dug’s, de los años setenta.

A nosotros nos gusta mucho la escena sudamericana de los setenta, Los Dug Dug’s; y una de sus canciones se llama Yo No Sé, así que la usamos. También porque es la más fácil de pronunciar para los anglo parlantes, por eso la escogimos. Tengo un amigo español que me dijo que si llamábamos a la banda así, sería molesto para la gente, y eso nos pareció guay (risas).

Hoy en día, con el superávit de actos musicales que hay en la industria, ¿cuál creéis que es la mejor manera de destacar? Simplemente tocando nuestra música, haciéndolo realmente duro y disfrutándolo, porque muchas bandas parece que toquen intentando parecerse a alguien más, y fallando en el intento. Nosotros nos enfocamos en divertirnos mucho, tocando cosas realmente pesadas. Siempre decimos que para nosotros, nuestra música es un poco auto indulgente, con muchos riffs, solos de batería, hacemos lo que nos place, y siempre queremos dejarlo todo en el escenario, siendo egoístas.

Sabemos que el evento acaba de empezar, aun así, ¿qué es lo más loco que habéis visto durante estas primeras horas del SVRF PVNK Invitational? Es un poco temprano en el SVRF PVNK para poder decir a ciencia cierta, y aunque puede que no sea lo más loco, vimos una pista donde los camiones daban vueltas (risas). Ah, también hay una esquina de canabis por ahí.

Tras haber hablado y reído con estos tíos, necesitábamos urgentemente subir nuestro nivel de integración. Tras volver a la caravana para darle buena cuenta a unos shoots de Jagger, y degustar en el food track la mejor hamburguesa vegeta de nuestras vidas (si alguien sabe el nombre que nos llame y nos lo diga, prometemos viajar por toda Francia en su búsqueda) decidimos que ya estaba bien de cortesía y saber estar, y creednos cuando decimos que dejamos bien posicionado el nivel patrio.

A la mañana siguiente esperábamos la llamada de Juan con la localización del campeonato pero una tormenta mañanera dejó bien claro que el SVRF PVNK no iba a pasar al recuerdo por su SVRF aunque sí desde luego por su fiesta . Nos juntamos con la chavalería en el skate park, donde entre barriles de cerveza, atrezzo KOOK, y trucos de skate que milagrosamente se planchaban a pesar de la embriaguez, nos dimos cuenta que la fiesta sólo acababa de empezar.

Los chicos de Faire nos gustaron por sus pintas cuando entraron en el skatepark, después de hablar con ellos pasamos de la simple atracción al amor en un salto y tras el conciertazo que dieron... qué decir. Caímos rendidas a sus pies y nos declaramos fans incondicionales para siempre. (Gracias por el parche de Faire Pierre ;) Esta banda es más francesa que una boina negra fumando un cigarrillo en la calle, y su humor no se queda atrás.

Faire se creó en enero del 2015. ¿Qué ha sido lo mejor de estos casi dos años? Mucho sexo y diversión (risas). La gira por México, eso ha sido probablemente lo mejor de estos dos años. México y el sexo, los dos van muy bien juntos. Ciudad de Sexico (risas).

¿Cuáles consideráis vuestras principales inf luencias? Boby Lapointe (risas), Suicide, Indochine y Rono, también Brian Jonestown Massacre, Jacques Dutronc (risas). ¿Qué consejo le daríais a alguien que quiere empezar una banda?

No lo hagáis (risas). Sí, no lo hagáis, así habrá más fama y Sexico para nosotros (risas).

Así que no os gusta compartir. No, solo mujeres, compartimos las mujeres. Algunas veces el aire también. ¿Qué es lo peor de tocar en público? No hay cosas malas. Oh sí, cuando te caes, algunas veces uno de nosotros se ha caído durante una presentación (risas), más tarde veréis de quién se trata. Pero en realidad no hay aspectos negativos de tocar en vivo. Tal vez cuando un sintetizador no funciona y lo arruina todo. ¿Qué es lo que más os ha gustado del SVRF PVNK Invitational?

El surf y el punk (risas). Aunque aparentemente el surf no se está dando, así que solo el punk, por eso hemos venido hoy, porque hoy solo hay punk.

Sexico, Boby Lapointe, compartir mujeres… el humor francés es bastante característico y algunas veces difícil de apreciar, especialmente cuando detrás de él se encuentran personas que se mueven con mucha facilidad entre la seriedad y un sarcasmo ingenioso. A medida que el día continuaba, se acercaba la hora de las presentaciones musicales, pero no antes de que nos encontrásemos con los chicos de Travel Check, cuatro parisinos que se toman muy en serio su oficio. Les entrevistamos en el backstage del concierto entre chupitos de Jager que volaban en todas direcciones y esto fue lo que nos contaron. ¿Qué es lo más importante que París le ha dado a Travel Check? Su alma, porque somos parisinos y estamos orgullosos de serlo, estamos muy orgullosos de nuestra ciudad. ¿Qué características hacen que vuestro sonido sea ácido y psicodélico? ¿Tal vez LSD? (Risas) No, sin drogas, nuestra característica es que no hay drogas, todo menos drogas.

¿Cuáles consideraríais los aspectos negativos y positivos de la escena musical actual? El aspecto positivo es que hay muchas bandas buenas tocando, el problema es que todas esas bandas buenas no son conocidas, y las que son conocidas son una mierda. ¿Qué significa el nombre Travel Check y de dónde salió? No lo sabemos. No nos gusta responder a esta pregunta porque no tenemos una buena respuesta, así que… Simplemente nos parece que suena guay. También porque vivimos en París y no viajamos mucho. ¿Ahora mismo en que estáis trabajando? Estamos trabajando en nuestro disco. Saldrá en febrero si todo va de acuerdo a lo planeado, y es el proyecto más grande de nuestras vidas… por ahora (risas). ¿Qué no olvidareis jamás del SVRF PVNK Invitational? Nunca olvidaremos a las personas geniales que hemos conocido, el lugar es asombroso, hay mucha cerveza; es un gran lugar para presentarse y tocar en vivo.

Y hasta aquí podemos contar de lo que fue una noche mágica, el resto como bien os advertimos al principio, nos lo guardamos para nosotras. A la mañana siguiente el sol lucía más que nunca y las previs de olas se presentaban favorables, pero la resaca se cernía sobre nuestras cabezas y el dueño de la autocaravana nos esperaba en Asturias con el cronómetro en marcha dispuesto a cobrarnos un extra millonario si nos retrasábamos lo mas mínimo así que haciendo honor a los romanos VENI, VIDI, VICI (Vine, Vi y Vencí) nos fuimos con un sabor de boca estupendo y la sensación de Victoria que te da el haber ido a un sitio con un objetivo y volver sin él pero feliz. Mil gracias a todo el team de SwichedKickout y Musique d’Aperitive por hacer esto posible, por estar pendientes de nosotras y por hacernos sentir parte de la familia. Merci Juan, Julian, Charles, Pierre, Alice...

The first big name we ran into was Koopa Tattoo, a French tattoo artist that has been present in this festival since its first edition. His style can be labeled as old school and, believe it or not, this was his first interview ever.

Koopa, tell us, what is the hardest thing about being a tattoo artist? First of all, it’s not something easy to learn, it’s also difficult to work with people, with the clients, because you have to get along with every type of people, each one with a different style, and you have to make them all happy. Sometimes you have to do some stuff you don’t like, and what is really difficult is not making shit (laughs). It’s difficult also for tattoo artists to do interviews, as you can imagine; and yes, this is my first one (laughs).

Why did you choose the name Koopa? I didn’t choose it. My friends chose it for me. It started when I was very young; with all of my friends, we each got a name from Mario Bros. We have a friend we call Princess Daisy (laughs), though we are not calling him Princess Daisy today, not here. It has been fifteen years since I have this nickname.

When did you decide to become a tattoo artist? I’ve been working as a tattoo artist for eight years already, but I like tattoos since I was really young, since I was maybe fifteen or sixteen years old.

I have always liked to draw, so this job was a good choice, since I get to draw everyday and that is what I wanted. I was looking on how to get into it, and one day my tattoo artist asked me if I wanted to come and work at the shop, and I said yes, of course. Now I can listen to punk rock everyday, draw, choose at what time I want go to work, it’s a good lifestyle, pas mal.

Do you remember which was the first tattoo you did for which you got paid? Of course I remember, it was really hard, really difficult; I had already tattooed some of my friends, but it’s not the same to work on a friend than with a real costumer, it was totally different.

Is there something you would never tattoo? Yes, I wouldn’t tattoo strange political or Nazi symbols for example, or some word I don’t understand, but if someone comes with a Spanish word, don’t worry, that I understand (laughs). Sometimes people come with words in Portuguese, Spanish or English, and if I’m not sure, because I don’t speak perfect either language, the client has to be sure with the translation, because I wont be able tocorrect it.

You’ve been present since the first edition of the SVRF PVNK Invitational. What do you think about it? It’s a big mess (laughs).

What can I say? It’s fun, it’s difficult for us to work, and I think this is going to be the best year. I really like the idea, many of my friends are here, and I get to work doing what I like to do.

Not long after, Koopa was already doing his magic, tattooing an awesome panther on some lucky kook. As we walked through crowds that were drinking beer and just having fun with the whole set up, we ran into some British lads that started a band six months ago and have met some success; not too our surprise really, since they clearly represent the heavy-punk attitude that flourishes in their songs, as well, they made us laugh, a lot, and explained to us what Yo No Se is about.

Tell us about the origin of Yo No Se. Jason and I (Al) used to be in a band called The Bad Joke That Ended Well and Factotum, and we just decided to start a new band. We wanted to do some more grungy progressive stuff, then we got Sam in, and Sam is the best drummer, so it worked out really well (laughs). We’ve only been going for like six months, and we got a record coming out soon.

As you said, you are currently working on your first album. Tell us about the best and worst part of this process. The worst part is the money (laughs), in the way that we don’t got any money, apart from that we get on really well. We like playing really hard, really heavy, and that’s a lot of fun. In a few of the other bands that we have been before, we used to play only what was needed, but in this one we kind of like got together with the idea of being quite heavy, and it just got heavier and heavier and heavier and it’s just really, really fun, to go all out, you know? We also wanted to make the songs before we played the gigs, because once you start with the gigs you don’t have much time to make more songs, so we did that and recorded before we played a lot of shows, so we did it kind of backwards, which was good for the recording, though the album is still not finished (laughs).

Dominic Mitchison who is recording it, he is really cool, he does it really well, it’s really fun and he is really cheap actually, so we are just being really tight asses about the money (laughs).

Why did you guys decide to use a name that in Spanish translates ‘I don’t know’? There’s a Mexican band called Los Dug Dug’s, from the seventies, who are amazing. We really like the South American scene from the seventies, and we really like Los Dug Dug’s, and one of their songs is called Yo No Se, so we used that. As well because it’s

the easiest one for English people to pronounce, so we choose that one.

Also my Spanish friend said that if we used the name band Yo No Se it would be annoying, so we thought that would be cool (laughs).

fallen down during a performance (laughs), you’ll see whom later tonight. But there is no bad thing about playing live. Sometimes when a synthesizer doesn’t work and it fucks up everything.

Nowadays, when there’s such a big surplus of musical performances, what is the best way to stand out? Just playing music by ourselves, playing really heavy, enjoying it, because a lot of bands seem like if they’re just playing aiming to be or look a certain way, failing to be someone else. We are just having lots of fun, playing really, really heavy stuff. We always say it’s kind of a self-indulgent, with big riffs, big drum fills, we just do what we want and we just want to go all out and enjoy ourselves, be selfish.

What do you like the most about the SVRF PVNK Invitational?

The surf and the punk (laughs). Although we think the surf is not the most important thing in this festival, so just the punk, that’s why we came today, because today is just punk.

We know it’s still early in the event, but what is the craziest thing you guys have seen during these first hours of this edition of the SVRF PVNK Invitational? It’s still quite early on the SVRF PVNK to say so, and though it’s not really crazy, but they got a skateboard there where they turn the trucks around (laughs), that’s about as crazy as it has gone so far. Ah, there’s also a cannabis corner somewhere around here.

After talking and laughing with these guys, we definitely needed to enhance our socializing skills, so we decided to do a quick pit stop by the caravan and have some shots of Jägger, then we had a bite at the food truck, were we tried the best vegetarian burgers of our lives (if someone knows the name of the guys that were in charge of them, please call us and let us know, we promise to cover all French territory in their quest), after satiating our appetite, we decided it was enough for the day, and trust us, when we are ready to say goodbye is because we have already given all we have.

The morning after we were waiting for Juan to call upon us, since we didn’t know the exact location where the competition was scheduled to happen, but an early storm decided that this edition of the SVRF PVNK would not go down in history due to its SVRF, the good thing is that nobody seems to care about the rain when it’s time to party. We gathered with all the other assistants at the skate park, where amongst kegs, kook props and skateboarding maneuvers miraculously being landed despite the inebriation, we realized the party had just begun.

We dug the guys from Faire as soon as our eyes landed on them, their look and style is so appealing we could not look away from the moment they entered the skate park, and after talking with them, this simple infatuation transformed into real and pure love, and then, when we saw them on stage performing… well, there are no words for how we feel. They had us at their feet and from now on we declare ourselves unconditional fans until eternity –thank you for the Faire patch Pierre ;) -. These guys are more French than a black beret smoking a cigarette, and their humor does not fall behind.

Faire was founded in January 2015. What has been the best thing about this almost two years? Sex and fun (laughs). The Mexican tour has probably been the best part of this almost two years. Mexico and sex, they both go together. Sexico City (laughs).

Who would you consider your main influences? Boby Lapointe (laughs), Suicide, Indochine and Rono, also Brian Jonestown Massacre, Jacques Dutronc (laughs).

What advice would you give to someone who is aiming to start a band? Don’t do it (laughs). Yes, don’t do it, more fame for us, more Sexico for us (laughs).

You don’t like to share. No, only women, we share women. Sometimes air too.

What is the worst thing about performing in public? There are no worst things. Oh yes, when you fall down, sometimes one of us has

Sexico, Boby Lapointe, sharing women… the French humor is pretty characteristic and sometimes hard to appreciate, especially when the people behind it are constantly moving between seriousness and ingenious sarcasm. As the day continued to unfold, it was almost time for the first musical performance of the day, but not before we had a chat with the guys of Travel Check, four Parisians that take their craft very seriously. We met them backstage, over Jägger shots that were flying in every possible direction, and this is what they had to say…

What is the most important thing Paris has given to Travel Check? Its soul, because we are Parisians and we are proud of it, we are really proud of our city.

What characteristics make your sound acid and psychedelic?

Maybe LSD? (Laughs) No, no drugs, our characteristic is no drugs, everything but drugs.

What would you consider the positive and negative aspects of the music scene nowadays? The positive aspect is all the cool bands that are playing, but the problem is that all the good bands are not known, and all the bands that are known are a bit shit.

What does the name Travel Check mean and where did it come from? We don’t know. We don’t like to answer this question because we don’t have a good answer, so… We just think it sounds cool. Also because we live in Paris and we don’t travel often.

On what project are you working right now? We are working on an album. It will be out on February, if everything goes as scheduled, and that’s the biggest project of our life… for now (laughs).

What will you never forget about the PVNK SVRF Invitational?

We will never forget all the people we have met, they are all really cool, the venue is amazing, there’s a lot of beer, it’s a cool place to perform at.

This is all we can tell about what we consider a magical weekend, the rest of the story, as we already warned you, will keep it for ourselves. The next morning the sun shone brightly, and the forecast was favorable to ride waves, but a gray and dull hangover was hovering over our heads, and the owner of the caravan was waiting for it in Asturias, looking at his timer, determinedly willing to charge us an exuberant amount of money if we dared to be even a minute late. So honoring the almighty Romans, we decided we had VENI, VIDI, VICI, and we left with an awesome aftertaste in our mouths, and that sense of victory that comes after experiencing an event with a fixed goal in mind, and not achieving it, nonetheless happiness was in the air. We would like to heartily thank the whole SWITCHEDkickout and Musique d’Aperitif teams for making this event possible, looking after us and making us feel like home. RIDING WITH THE LEGENDS

IVORY SERRA Ivory Serra es un verdadero artista y un fotógrafo excepcional. Ha trabajado con algunas de las productoras más grandes y con personajes como Willy Rizzo y Peter Beard, aunque es reconocido principalmente por su trabajo independiente. Aunque ha retratado a personajes ilustres dentro del mundo de la música como Lenny Kravitz, del arte como Retna, y a filósofos como Noam Chomsky, su documentación de la cultura skate desde los años 90 es lo que le ha traído más reconocimiento y atención. Es difícil afirmar que nunca has visto su trabajo, especialmente si te gusta la fotografía de skate. Una de sus imágenes más famosas es una fotografía en blanco y negro del fallecido Andy Kessler, avanzando entre el tráfico neoyorquino sobre su tabla. Su libro más reciente, Full Bleed, es la Carta Magna de la cultura skater de Nueva York. En él se destacan más de 30 años de historia sobre el patín en la Gran Manzana, con instantáneas hechas por Serra y otros 50 fotógrafos, entre los cuales están Spike Jonze, Larry Clark y Mike O’Meally. lamono habló con él acerca del viaje que realizó y sobre algunas de las experiencias que lo han convertido en quien es hoy, una de las figuras más respetadas dentro del mundo del patín.

Ivory Serra has been a lifelong artists and photographer. He has worked with major studios, for the likes of Willy Rizzo and Peter Beard, but he’s most known for his independent work. Though he has captured portraits of A-Listers, like Lenny Kravitz, Retna and Noam Chomsky, his documentation of the skate culture, since the ‘90s, has brought him the most attention. It’s hard to say that you have not seen his work before, especially if you admire skate photography. One of his most famous pieces is a black-and-white panning shot of the late Andy Kessler, pushing through the Manhattan traffic on his skateboard. His latest book, Full Bleed, is the Magna Carta of New York City’s skate culture. It features over 30 years of NYC skate photography, from him and 60 other photographers, including Spike Jonze, Larry Clark and Mike O’Meally. lamono sat down with Serra to talk about the journey he has taken and some of the experiences which have shaped him into one of skateboarding’s most respected figures.

El skateboarding y la fotografía son, aparentemente, dos elementos muy importantes dentro de tu identidad. ¿Cómo han evolucionado? ¿Fue el skateboarding el que te llevó a la fotografía o al revés? Nací en Bolinas, un pueblo costero al norte de San Francisco, California. Es una comunidad pequeña, con una población diversa y siempre ha tenido una escena activa en cuanto a skate y surf. Yo aprendí a patinar junto a mi hermano cuando éramos adolescentes, antes de que empezara a hacer fotos. Esto fue a comienzos de los ochenta, y no fue hasta que empecé la secundaria que di algunas clases de fotografía, aprendí a utilizar la cámara y a revelar en el cuarto oscuro. A partir de ahí, mis fotografías eran de mis viajes y mis amigos, los cuales eran en su mayoría skaters. Tanto mi fotografía como mi skateboarding han evolucionado juntos porque es difícil hacer las dos cosas al mismo tiempo. Cuando la sesión es buena y quieres patinar suele ser porque los mejores trucos están sucediendo.

Hay momentos en los que tienes que escoger lo uno o lo otro. Es un balance constante entre diversión y trabajo.

Has trabajado con muchos artistas y personalidades famosas.

La lista es larga e incluye a leyendas como Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Noam Chomsky, Retna y N.E.R.D., solo por nombrar algunas. ¿Podrías decirnos cuál ha sido tu experiencia favorita o más satisfactoria trabajando con ellos? A lo largo de los años he tenido la oportunidad de trabajar con muchas personas increíbles, así que para mí es difícil nombrar solo a una persona o experiencia favorita en particular. Me gusta mucho trabajar con Lenny Kravitz, ya que él sabe cómo colaborar y tiene un gran estilo. He tenido algunos shoots realmente divertidos con el rider Tony Trujillo. Tiene la mejor energía tanto encima como fuera de la tabla. Algunas de las experiencias más memorables haciendo fotos han sido cuando he tenido la oportunidad de viajar y documentar personas fuera de los Estados Unidos. En el 2001 fui a Japón durante cinco días a fotografiar a varios artistas entre los cuales estaban Barry McGee, Ed Templeton, Mike Mills, ESPO, Phil Frost, Margaret Kilgallen, Cheryl Dunn, Chris Johanson, AMAZE, y fue algo que jamás podré olvidar. También, hace dos años, pasé once días en Perú fotografiando varias ciudades y sitios turísticos, lo cual fue una lección de historia inigualable, y tuve la oportunidad de conocer diferentes ruinas y construcciones antiguas.

Hace un par de años, tú y otros skaters/artistas, como Lance Mountain y Chad Muska, fueron elegidos para estar presentes en la exposición Love and Guts’ Eyes Wide Open, dedicada a otros skaters que han fallecido. ¿Cómo fue trabajar en un homenaje a individuos que inspiran, como Harold Hunter y Andy Kessler, junto con otros artistas? A medida que te haces mayor, parece como si el número de buenos amigos y skaters que han sido visitados por el hermano de Morfeo crece cada año. Siempre es difícil perder a alguien cercano a ti. Hacer un show en homenaje a ellos es importante para recordarle a nuestros colegas las contribuciones inspirativas que individuos como Andy Kessler y Harold Hunter le han hecho a la comunidad skater. Ellos fueron verdaderas leyendas de la ciudad de Nueva York, y para mí fue un honor ser parte de este grupo de artistas que se reunió para hacerle un tributo a su legado. Ver todo este trabajo junto, y el esfuerzo que cada uno puso para la exposición, fue muy divertido.

Uno de los artistas visuales que participó en esta exposición, Don Pendleton, dijo que, ‘el elemento creativo es casi inherente en el skateboarding, no puede ser ignorado’. ¿Estás de acuerdo con esta afirmación? De ser así, ¿cómo aplicas la creatividad que enfocas

en tus obras artísticas en tu estilo al patinar? Estoy totalmente de acuerdo en que el skateboarding es creativo a muchos niveles, desde el individuo que decide cabalgar una tabla, hasta los gráficos y las pegatinas que cubren toda la superficie de ésta. El skateboarding se parece mucho a la música, ya que es tanto personal como orientada a grupos, pero difícilmente clasificado como deporte. En los Juegos Olímpicos va a ser interesante, ya que calificar los aspectos creativos del skate es algo muy difícil. Yo no veo una relación entre mi estilo al patinar y mis fotos, pero sí intento ser preciso y crear momentos perdurables con mi trabajo, si eso es posible.

Has mencionado que viviste en California del norte y central, y en la ciudad de Nueva York. ¿Cuál ha sido tu lugar favorito para vivir y por qué? ¿Te ves mudándote a algún otro lugar? Pasé 21 años en California antes de mudarme a Nueva York, después de acabar la universidad en Santa Cruz. Viviré en Nueva York mientras sea asequible y relevante dentro de mi trabajo. Disfruto viajar fuera de NY siempre que es posible, pero la opción de mudarme no está en mi futuro inmediato.

Una de tus series fotográficas publicada en tu web se titula ‘Old NYC’. Has vivido en la ciudad durante los últimos 21 años. ¿Cuál es tu interpretación de las diferencias entre el viejo NYC y el nuevo NYC? He vivido en la ciudad de Nueva York por unas cuantas décadas y ha cambiado mucho desde 1995. Ahora hay muchas más plazas para patinar y parques que no existían hace diez años. Las antiguas partes de la ciudad se han vuelto nostálgicas, ya que lo nuevo está constantemente reemplazando lo viejo, y eso es algo que sucede en muchas ciudades hoy en día. Me gusta Nueva York, es diferente a Brooklyn y los demás boroughs. Algunos de los cambios más drásticos en el paisaje urbano están sucediendo fuera de Manhattan. El antiguo NYC era un lugar más duro. Times Square es ahora una atracción publicitaria. Los tiempos cambian, especialmente en una isla con una densidad de población tan alta y donde los inmuebles son tan limitados.

Otro elemento que está relacionado con el skate, y recurrente en tus fotografías, es el desarrollo de la vestimenta urbana y la moda skater. ¿Qué piensas acerca de cómo la cultura del skate y su moda han permeado la sociedad y ahora marcas como Vans o Supreme son consideradas mainstream? El skateboarding siempre tendrá un aspecto underground, el cual no depende en las corrientes mainstream ni en las tendencias de moda ni en las decisiones de mercadeo que toman los ejecutivos de cada marca. Yo siempre he tenido marcas predilectas, ya sean de cámaras fotográficas o tablas para patinar, y ‘funcionalidad sobre moda’ es un lema con el cual comulgo, pero el apoyo que algunas marcas pueden ofrecer no debe ser ignorado. Mi hermano gemelo, Shelter, y yo, los dos patinábamos para Vans cuando éramos adolescentes, y las cosas que Steve Van Doren ha hecho a lo largo de los años en favor del skate, me hacen desear que hubiera más marcas como esta. La creación de skate parks, concursos y tours es posible gracias a la ayuda de patrocinadores mainstream. Yo estuve en los primeros X-Games.

Aquello fue el comienzo. Tony Hawk dijo, ‘Los Juegos Olímpicos necesitan el skateboarding más que el skateboarding necesita los Olímpicos’, y eso es cierto para muchas de las marcas comerciales relacionadas con el patín.

A muchos fotógrafos urbanos les gusta viajar ligero cuando se tienen que desplazar por motivos laborales. ¿Qué equipo llevas tú en

estos viajes? Últimamente, si voy a viajar, llevo conmigo una cámara Fuji 6X9, un objetivo gemelo Yashica-A, Olympus XA2, Canon MK2 w/ 24-105mm, un flash Nikon SB-26, otro Vivitar 285, un set Pocket Wizard y tal vez un reflector plateado/blanco Domke. Es importante tener movilidad y una buena mochila para guardar el equipo.

Siempre voy con una mochila Domke y, si voy a volar, mi estuche Think Tank Airport, así puedo viajar ligero y coger mi cámara rápidamente. Intento evitar cargar un trípode y, por lo general, me llevo más equipo que el que termino utilizando. En la mayoría de mis trabajos comerciales el equipo suele ser predeterminado y alquilado, así que, personalmente, me gusta poder moverme y facturar como máximo dos maletas.

Un sujeto recurrente dentro de tu serie fotográfica realizada en Cuba son los coches clásicos que llenan las calles de la Habana, como los Cadillacs De Ville y los Chevrolets Bel Air. Es interesante que en Estados Unidos busquen soluciones de sostenibilidad en los coches nuevos, cuando muchos de los de los coches en Cuba han sobrevivido por más de medio siglo. ¿Viste diferencias acerca de la cultura automovilística en Cuba con la de Estados

Unidos? En Cuba, la preservación de coches americanos clásicos fue algo increíble de ver. Partes antiguas siendo reutilizadas una y otra vez. Aquí, en los Estados Unidos, es un privilegio tener un coche clásico, pero en Cuba no hay opción, los únicos coches viejos que hay allí son americanos de los años 50 y 60.

Junto con Alex Corporan y Andre Razo, creasteis una documentación bastante extensa sobre el skateboarding en Nueva York en Full Bleed. El libro tiene más de 300 páginas y en él se destacan más de 30 años de fotos. ¿Cómo fue crear un proyecto así? Full Bleed fue un gran proyecto colaborativo donde invertimos mucho trabajo y en el cual contamos con alrededor de sesenta fotógrafos.

Hacer libros es una gran manera de preservar un pedazo de la historia en un mismo lugar.

Queremos conocer tus nuevos proyectos. ¿Hay algo en lo que estés trabajando actualmente? Estoy trabajando en un libro que incluirá 20 años de fotografías provenientes de mi archivo personal.

También estoy realizando un proyecto a largo plazo en California para el cual estoy usando una cámara antigua 4x5.

Skateboarding and photography seem to be two important elements within your identity. How have they evolved? Was it skateboarding that brought you to photography, or photography that brought you to skateboarding? I was born in Bolinas, a coastal town north of San Francisco, California. It’s a small community of diverse people and it has always had a surf and skate scene. I learned to skate with my brother as a teenager before taking any real memorable pictures. This was the early 1980’s, and it wasn’t until high school, when I took a photo class and learned how to use a camera and make prints in the darkroom, that my photographic practice really started. From that point on, my photographs were of my travels and friends, which were mostly skateboarders. Both, my skateboarding and photography have evolved together because it’s difficult to do both at the same time. When the session is good you want to skate and that’s usually when the best tricks happen. There are times you have to choose one over the other. It’s always a balance between work and play.

You have worked with an impressive number of famous personalities. The list is long, and it includes legends like Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Noam Chomsky, Retna and N.E.R.D., just to name a few. Could you share with us one of your favorite, or most rewarding, experiences while working with a celebrity client? Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work with many amazing people, and that’s a difficult question, to name one particular favorite person or experience. I really like working with Lenny Kravitz, since he knows how to collaborate and has a great sense of style. I’ve had a few really fun shoots with the skateboarder Tony Trujillo. He has the best energy on and off his board. Some of the most memorable times photographing are actually when I get a chance to travel and document other people outside the U.S. In 2001, I went to Japan for five days to photograph several artists including Barry McGee, Ed Templeton, Mike Mills, ESPO, Phil Frost, Margaret Kilgallen, Cheryl Dunn, Chris Johanson, AMAZE, and that was something I’ll never forget. Also, two years ago I spent 11 days in Peru photographing various cities and sites, which was an incredible history lesson, seeing the various ruins and ancient artifacts.

A couple years ago, you and other skateboarders/artists, like Lance Mountain and Chad Muska, were featured in Love & Guts’ ‘Eyes Wide Open’ exhibition, which was dedicated to fellow skaters that have passed away. What was it like working on a memorial about inspirational individuals, like Harold Hunter and Andy Kessler, with other talented artists? As you get older, it seems the number of great friends and skateboarders that have been visited by the brother of sleep grows every year. It’s always difficult to lose someone you’re close to. Doing a memorial show is important so friends can remember the inspirational contributions individuals such as Andy Kessler and Harold Hunter have left for the skateboarding community. They are truly New York legends, and having a group of artists come together and pay a tribute to their legacy was an honor to be party of. Seeing all the work together and the effort everyone put into the show was super fun.

One of the visual artists involved in this exhibition, Don Pendleton, said that, ‘It’s almost inherent in skateboarding that there’s this creative element that can’t be ignored’. Would you agree with this sentiment? If so, how do you apply the creativity you employ in your artwork, to your skateboarding style?

I totally agree that skateboarding is creative on many levels, from the individual making a choice to ride a board, to the graphics that cover almost every surface of that board. Skateboarding is a lot like music, it’s both personal and can be group oriented, but not easily classified as a sport. The Olympics will be interesting, as judging the creative aspects of skateboarding is very difficult. I don’t see a relationship between my skating style and my photos, but I do try to be precise and create a timeless moments with my work, if that’s possible.

You have mentioned that you lived in northern, central California and New York City. Which has been your favorite place to live in and why? Do you see yourself moving elsewhere? I spent 21 years in California, before moving to New York City after finishing college in Santa Cruz, CA. I’ll live in NYC for as long as it’s affordable and relevant to the work I do. I enjoy traveling from New York whenever possible, but moving isn’t on the immediate horizon.

One of the photo series published on your website is called ‘Old NYC’. You have been living in the city for the past 21 years. What is your interpretation of the differences between the Old NYC and the New NYC? I have lived in New York City for a few decades and a lot has changed since 1995. There are now more skate plazas and parks that didn’t exist ten years ago. The old parts of the city have become nostalgic because the new is constantly replacing the old, and that is true for most cities these days. I like NYC, it is different than Brooklyn and the other ‘boros’. Some of the most drastic changes in the urban landscape are happening outside Manhattan. The Old NYC was a rougher place. Times Square is now an advertising playground and no longer a row of broken movie theater marquees. The times are always changing, especially in such a densely populated island where real estate is limited.

Another element that is tied to skateboarding, and heavily featured in your photographs, is the development of street wear and skate fashion. What do you think of the influx of skateboarding culture and fashion into the mainstream, as seen in the dominance of brands like Vans or Supreme? There will always be an underground aspect of skateboarding that doesn’t rely on the mainstream fashion trends and consumer marketing choices of brand executives.

I have always liked particular brands myself, either if it is a camera manufacturer or a board company, and ‘function before fashion’ is a motto I agree with, but the support some brands offer can not be overlooked. My twin brother, Shelter, and I, both rode for Vans as teenagers, and the things Steve Van Doren has done over the years for skateboarding makes me wish there were more brands like his. The creation of skate parks, contests and tours, are all possible with the

help of mainstream sponsors. I was at the first X-Games. That was the beginning. Now skateboarding is going to be in the Olympics. Tony Hawk said, ‘The Olympics need skateboarding more than skateboarding needs the Olympics’, and that can be true for a lot of commercial brands involved with skateboarding.

A lot of street photographers like to travel light when they’re on the road working. When you’re traveling for work, what equipment do you always take? Lately, if I’m traveling, I bring a Fuji 6X9 camera, Yashica-A twin lens, Olympus XA2, Canon MK2 w/ 24-105mm, Nikon SB-26 flash, Vivitar 285 flash, a Pocket Wizard set and maybe a Wescott silver/white reflector. It’s important to be mobile and have a good camera bag. With a Domke shoulder bag and, if I’m flying, my Think Tank Airport case, you can travel light and be able to a grab your camera quickly. I try to avoid carrying a tripod and usually end up bringing more equipment than I use.

With most commercial jobs the equipment is predetermined and rented, so personally I like to be mobile and check two bags at the most.

A recurrent subject in your Cuba series are the classic cars that fill the streets of Havana, like the Cadillac De Ville or the Chevrolet

Bel Air. It’s interesting that people in the U.S. look to new cars for solutions of sustainability, but a lot of the cars in Cuba have sustained since the mid-century. What did you notice different about the car culture in Cuba versus that of the United States? In Cuba, the preservation of the classic American cars was great to see. Old parts being used over and over. Here, in the U.S., it’s a privilege to own a classic car, but in Cuba that was not really a choice, the only old cars were American ones from the 1950s and ‘60s.

Along with Alex Corporan and Andre Razo, you created a pretty comprehensive documentation of New York City’s skateboarding history in Full Bleed. The book is over 300 pages and features 30 years of photos. What was it like creating a project of this scale?

Full Bleed was a great collaborative project that took a lot of work and involved around 60 photographers. Making books is a great way to preserve a slice of history in one place.

We’re more than excited to check out your new projects. Is there anything you’re currently working on or about to release? I’m working on a book that will include 20 years of photos from my archive.

Also I’m shooting a long-term project in California for which I’m using an old 4x5 camera.

ANTHONY LISTER X VOLCOM F: JULIA BAEDCKER

Anthony Lister se describe a sí mismo como un “intervencionista público”. Para él, como ciudadano, embellecer y transformar el espacio público es un derecho. Un derecho por el que ha tenido problemas con la autoridad en numerosas ocasiones, aquí y allá. Imaginamos que cuando Volcom lo subió a un avión desde Australia con destino Barcelona, su cabeza iría maquinando de qué manera iba a dejar su huella en La Ciudad Condal. Aquí empezaba el tour de art happenings que presentan la colección que ha diseñado de la mano con Volcom. Dos actores dentro de este gran escenario llamado cultura urbana, con más de una cosa en común: la lucha contra el sistema y ser fieles a sus principios desde el primer día. Quizás por esos sus caminos se unieron, creando una colección cápsula en la que se exploran temáticas relacionadas con el dinero y la corrupción, y cómo éstas se relacionan con el estado cibernético moderno. Una declaración de intenciones que nos da una pista de que Lister es un artista consecuente, que se agarra a una idea y desarrolla todo un universo simbólico alrededor de ella. Por eso, en Barcelona tomó a lamono como embajadores y organizadores de su paso por la ciudad y el Nasty Garage como sus HQ, y nos dejó alucinandos con su soltura y rapidez a la hora de crear. Lo que nos habían dicho era verdad: es como ver una supernova creativa, un nervio que podría estar modificando una obra una y otra vez. Las ideas fluyen y mientras tenga un spray o un carboncillo en la mano, no tendrá fin. Los días previos al evento, Lister se dedicó a crear los seis lienzos de su residencia artística en el Nasty Garage. Seis lienzos que creó mientras una imagen suya en movimiento se proyectaba en la pared y mientras música rock a todo decibelio salía a duras penas por los altavoces. Después, y gracias a la colaboración de Murs Lliures, el artista australiano salió a las calles de Barcelona y descargó sus sprays Montana Colors en un muro por Poblenou, y en varias superficies más que se iba encontrando por el camino. Y entonces, llegó el día del evento. Preparó un livepainting que iba más allá de lo que habíamos visto hasta ahora: con un halo warholiano, el Nasty Garage se convirtió en la Factory, para ver desfilar a modelos desnudas que iban a posar para él. Porque aparte de su trabajo más callejero, Lister es un gran amante de la anatomía y el movimiento. En una hora, ya había gastado medio cuaderno de dibujo. Pero mientras, la fiesta seguía a su alrededor. Sören Manzoni, uno de los capitanes del barco Nasty Mondays pinchó hits para un público totalmente entregado a los Ginger Deers, al néctar de Moritz, a la máquina de humo y a transformar una tarde de jueves cualquiera en una fiesta improvisada. Pero esto no acaba aquí: si quieres enterarte de más, te recomendamos que no te pierdas la entrevista que le hicimos en el hotel. Lister, vuelve pronto.

Anthony Lister describes himself as a “public interventionist”. For him, as a citizen, embellishing and transforming the public space is his right.

A ‘right’ that has caused him a few problems with the law. From the moment Volcom put him on a plane from Australia to Spain, probably his head was already planning in which way he could leave his mark in Barcelona. This was the first stop in his art-happening tour, launching the capsule collection he designed hand by hand with Volcom. Two main characters within this huge stage called urban culture, both of them with ideologies alike; facing the system standing for one’s beliefs. That might be the reason why their paths have crossed, and as a result a collection emerged, where the concepts of money and corruption are explored, as well as the way in which they are related to the modern Cyber-Estate. A clear statement that leads us to think Lister is a consequent artist who develops each idea with a very rich symbolic universe around it. That’s why, in Barcelona, he chose lamono as his ambassador, and we chose the Nasty Garage as HQ, the perfect place for an occasion like this. All the previous rumors we had heard were actually true: Lister is like a creative supernova, a nerve that can modify an artwork endlessly. His ideas flow and as long as he has spray paint or charcoal in his hands, he will not stop. The days before the event, he worked on six canvases during his artistic residency at the Nasty Garage. Six canvases he started and finished right there, and which were created while a projection of his head hovered above, to a soundtrack of great high-volume punk and rock. Afterwards, and thanks to the collaboration of Murs Lliures, the artist roamed around the streets of Poblenou with his Montana Colors spray paints, which he used for the creation of a beautiful mural depicting a dancer. For the event he prepared for us a live painting beyond anything we had seen before: with a Warhol-esque halo, the Nasty Garage turned into The Factory, where naked models walked and posed for him, because besides his street work, Lister is a lover of anatomy and movement. In an hour he had already gone over half a sketchbook. Around him the party unraveled, while Sören Manzoni, one of the Nasty captains, played hit after hit for all the guests who were delighted enjoying the delicious Ginger Deers accompanied with one or two cold Mortiz, because balance is important. The smoke machine was the final touch to finish transforming a Thursday evening into an amazing improvised party. But this story doesn’t end here. INAUGURACIÓN HURLEY SURF CLUB F: CARLES MEDINA Y GINÉS PEDRERO

Hay momentos clave, eventos en los que uno sabe que tiene que estar, sea como sea. El pasado sábado 1 de octubre se inauguró en San Sebastián el Hurley Surf Club, un nuevo espacio en colaboración con Pukas junto a la playa de Zurriola. Y debíamos asistir, no sólo por el hecho de compartir un día con los nombres que nos están poniendo los pelos de punta en el World Surf League (John John Flores y Filipe Toledo, entre otros), sino porque la idea que han tenido estas dos marcas creando este club (el tercero de estas características en Europa) bien merecía una visita en primicia. En el Hurley Surf Club no sólo se van a desarrollar clases de boxeo y otras disciplinas que no son surf pero que ayudarán a los atletas a mejorar la técnica (equilibrio, concentración, etc.) sino que también han puesto en marcha un sistema puntero de Video Coaching, mediante el cual el entrenador revisará uno a uno, ola a ola, los movimientos del atleta comparándolos con la técnica de los mejores surfistas del mundo y ayudando así a mejorar su progresión, además de incluir la Nike Training Club Session (sesiones de yoga para mejorar la flexibilidad). Todo un despliegue concretizado en un espacio austero, negro, gris y blanco, donde no hay lugar para la distracción y sí mucho para la concentración. Tras la clase de surf a la que nos invitaron para arrancar, nos cruzamos a los fundadores de Pukas, Marian e Iñigo, en los vestuarios, y aprovechamos para charlar un poco sobre el proyecto: nos comentaron que hacía ya seis años que soñaban con realizar un paso más y que estaban más que felices con la mano que les ha tendido Hurley para hacer su sueño realidad, siendo esta la primera vez que se asocian con una marca grande para hacer un salto cualitativo en el mundo del surf, fuera de las convencionales colaboraciones con marcas a nivel de creación de colaboraciones en ropa o material duro. Para ellos supone una evolución en la historia de la escuela que ahora puede llegar al surfista profesional ofreciendo unos servicios exclusivos. Además de hablar con Iñigo y Marian, lo hicimos con John John Florence que se toma su liderazgo en el campeonato como un paseo más y no hace ninguna preparación especial, simplemente se conciencia en no perder lo que para él es lo más importante en el surf: la diversión. Y acabamos la jornada viendo la première del cuarto capítulo de TWELVE, proyecto dirigido por Bill Ballard, que cuenta el camino seguido por JJF en la búsqueda del primer título mundial de su carrera. Novedades, surf, amigos, Donosti, admiración, ídolos y a dormir con la sensación de que esto no se para.

Some moments in life are truly imperative, events one simply cannot miss, no matter what. Past Saturday, 1st of October, the Hurley Surf Club was inaugurated in San Sebastian; a new space that was created in collaboration with Pukas, just by the Zurriola beach. And as we said, we had to be there, not just to get to know and talk with some of the guys that are revolutionizing the World Surf League (John John Florence and Filipe Toledo, amongst others), but because the idea conceived by these two brands, creating this club –the third one of its kind in Europe-, deserved a special place in our agenda. The Hurley Surf Club will not only host boxing classes, amid other disciplines that may have little to do with surfing but eventually help athletes develop their technique (balance, concentration, etc.), but as well, it counts with a state of the art Video Coaching system, through which the trainer can overhaul one by one, wave after wave, the movements of the athletes to then compare them with the technique of the best surfers of the world, improving the athlete’s progression. Besides that, the club has the Nike Training Club Session, where yoga sessions are held to improve flexibility, endurance and balance. A whole wide concept materialized in an austere space, black, grey and white, designed to enhance focus and concentration. After taking the surf lesson we were invited to, we had the chance of running into the two cofounders of Pukas, Marian and Iñigo, in the dressing rooms, with whom we talked about this project: they told us that it has been six years since they wanted to take this step, and how happy they are with the help offered by Hurley to turn their dream into reality, being this the first time they come together with a big brand, taking a quality leap within the surf industry, beyond the traditional collaborations with other brands regarding designs and creations of apparel and equipment. For them it represents an evolution within the history of the club, which will now be able to reach the professional surfer offering him/her exclusive services. Besides talking with Iñigo and Marian, we also shared some words with John John Florence, a guy who faces his success within the championship tour with outstanding ease, carrying out an ordinary preparation, simply focusing on not losing what is most important for him: the fun of surfing. We finished our day enjoying the premiere of the fourth episode of TWELVE, a project directed by Bill Ballard, that narrates the path JJF followed to win his first world title. Novelties, friends, surf, Donosti, admiration and idols, all followed up by a good night sleep with the feeling that all the magic we are living will not stop.
