Hey Key Clubbers! I would like to take this moment to remind everyone that Key Club officer elections should be held every year in January or early February. One benefit of hosting club elections in January is that your new officers have almost 4 months to shadow the graduating officers and become acquainted with their new position. Another benefit of hosting elections early second semester is that all newly elected officers can attend the district Leadership Training Conference on February 24, 2017. Leadership training is the place to kick-start your Key Club year! If your club has ever attended Leadership Training in the past, I would highly recommend attending again. This year’s leadership training will be very different than the event has been in the past! You will hear speakers on topics that will be essential to the success of your club including communication, group dynamics, and planning skills. You will also learn the fundamentals of servant leadership! You will have time to evaluate the status of your club and cement your club’s goals with your fellow officers. You will also have the chance to network with officers from key clubs all across the south and learn about how they govern their clubs! Whether you are new to Key Club and interested in getting involved or a newly elected officer, Leadership training is the sure fire way to increase your knowledge on leadership and Key Club in a fun, engaging environment! Leadership Training registration information will come from your Lieutenant Governors very soon, in the meantime, if you or anyone in your club has ever considered running for an officer position I would like to encourage you to seize the opportunity that 2018 brings. Please contact me with any questions that you have in regards to Leadership Training Conference, Officer Elections, and officer elections in general. Yours in Service, Anna Kate Broussard Louisiana-Mississippi-West Tennessee Key Club Governor

By Anthony Simmons Greetings Key Clubbers: ‘‘Tis the season for parties and presents and exams and lots of stress. In the midst of all that is going on in your lives, don’t lose sight of what is really important: people! It’s easy to get so caught up I all of the activities that make up the holiday season. It’s tempting to put service on a back burner until after the holidays, but for some in our communities, your service through Key Club can make all the difference in the world for them. Make finding the time to connect to to the lonely in your community a top priority during this season. Happy Holidays and thank you for all you do!

Hello Key Clubbers, is the time for gifts and resolutions. What about a resolution to help your seniors get money for college to honor them for all of the gifts they have given through the years? Well, you can make that happen. First: go to lamisstenn.org>LaMissTenn Foundation>Scholarship Programs and apply for a Key Club Scholarship . These scholarships range from $500 to $3000 and are awarded at District Convention (hurry on this one, the deadline is January 15). Second: go to Kiwanis.org>Kiwanis Children's Fund>Impact and Programs>Scholarship Opportunities and check out the scholarships available there. Not enough? Check with your sponsoring Kiwanis Club. Many of them offer scholarships or Service Awards. You have made a career of giving to others during your high school years, now we want to help you continue giving as you move on to Circle K and Kiwanis! Have a great Holiday Season!

Donations for St. Jude

Our club has recently finished up our St. Jude donation drive. In the past, we would raise our money for St. Jude by asking the members each to collect as much money as they could. We would have some kids that raised almost a thousand dollars, while others did not raise any money. This year, we had a new idea; we would set up donation tables in front of grocery stores for a few weeks. The idea was very successful!! Out of our fifty-three members, forty of them participated in the project. Super1 let us set up tables at four of their stores. But a long story short, and many hours later, we added up all our money for a grand total of $10,342.00!!! We all had a great time during project, and it all went very well!

Ingredients 12 ounces semisweet chocolate (chopped into 1/2-inch pieces)

1 1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract

1 pound white chocolate (chopped into 1/2inch pieces)

3 candy canes or 12 round hard peppermint candies, crushed

Directions 1. Line a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with aluminum foil, shiny-side up; smooth out any wrinkles. Heat 1 inch of water in a saucepan over low heat until steaming.
 2.

Put all but 3/4 cup of the semisweet chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Set the bowl over the saucepan of steaming water (do not let the bowl touch the water) and stir until one-third of the chocolate is melted. Remove the bowl from the saucepan; keep the steaming water over low heat.

3.

Gradually stir the reserved 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate into the bowl, a few pieces at a time, until all of the chocolate is melted.

4.

Return the bowl to the saucepan, 5 to 10 seconds at a time, to help melt the chocolate, if needed. Do not rush this step: It may take up to 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Wipe off any moisture from the bottom of the bowl. Stir 3/4 teaspoon peppermint extract into the chocolate, then quickly pour into the prepared baking dish and spread in an even layer.

5.

Firmly tap the dish against the counter to remove any air bubbles. Set aside at room temperature until almost set, about 10 minutes.

6.

Meanwhile, put all but 1 cup of the white chocolate in a large heatproof bowl and repeat the melting process over the steaming water; dry off the bottom of the bowl. Stir in the remaining 3/4 teaspoon peppermint extract; pour over the semisweet chocolate and spread in an even layer.

7.

Sprinkle immediately with the crushed candy canes, gently pressing them into the white chocolate. Set aside at room temperature until firm, about 1 hour.

8.

Lift the bark out of the pan using the foil and break it into pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

For me, finding service opportunities all comes from my home club. I find that our officers advisors are very good at promoting different projects. Other places where you can find service opportunities are at your church, academic clubs, sports teams, online, and through your school counselor. In addition, however, I have been increasingly involved with a couple of local rescue missions, and I have realized that it is necessary for individuals to not only rely on others to find service opportunities for them. Service is about having the initiative to help others, and if you are content with relying on someone else to hand you opportunities to serve others, then there is something wrong with that picture. Always be proactive with your service, and take the initiative to find and share service opportunities.

By Shana Bourgeois People call this time of year “the most wonderful time of the year.” It is called the “most wonderful time of the year” because this is the time of year where people give back to their community. There is just something about the holiday season that makes everyone want to help their family, friends, and even strangers. We, as Key Clubbers, do this all year though it is important for us to serve during the holidays because the holiday season is not “the most wonderful time of year” for everyone. We give back to the community all year with various service projects: trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, Pancake Breakfasts, and Visiting the nursing home. While the holiday season is also a busy time of year for everyone, find the time to serve this season. Service opportunities are everywhere, we just have to find them. Here are some helpful examples of how to give back this holiday season: •Write letters for children at the local hospital •Organize a food drive at school •Volunteer at a homeless shelter or Soup Kitchen •Visit the Nursing Home •Help elders decorate for Christmas •“Adopt a child” for the holidays “And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: "How could it be so?
"It came without ribbons! It came without tags!
"It came without packages, boxes or bags!"
Then he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore. And what happened then…?
 Well... in Who-ville they say
 That the Grinch's small heart
 Grew three sizes that day!”

The holiday season is finally here, and I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving if you celebrated! During this festive time of year, it can be easy to push Key Club aside (especially with school breaks). While it is important to spend time with our families, we have to remember the commitments we made when taking on our leadership roles. My suggestion is that you make sure to stay up-to-date on your Key Club duties--Â so that when important holiday events roll around, you won't be overwhelmed with work when you return to business as usual. This is what I'll be doing, as I will be taking the weekend before Christmas off to spend with my family. Have a great week! :)

Yours in caring, passion, and service, Jared Dutko, Trustee Key Club International
