A fine white glazed censer

Henan province Sui dynasty (AD 581–618) h: 20 cm

隋 白瓷香爐

Beehive shape, decorated with four sets of openings, each of eight vertical slots finely cut and symmetrically arranged high on the plain steep sides, alternating with the floral roundels.

Similar pieces are found in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, and in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo.

A similar piece appears in Chinese Ceramics by He Li, Thames & Hudson, cat. no. 127.

Loo & Co., Exhibition of Chinese Arts, New York, 1941, cat. no. 192; subsequently illustrated in Hugo Munsterberg, Sculpture of the Orient, New York, 1972, pl. 91; and in the exhibition Ancient Chinese bronze vessels, gilt bronzes and sculptures; two private collections, one formerly part of the Minkenhof collection, Eskenazi, London, 1977, cat. no. 18, where the figure is described as Western Asiatic, possibly modeled after a Tocharian or Khorezmi.

A black and white glazed bowl

With steeply curved sides rising from a slightly concave circular base, covered with black glaze on the exterior, white glaze stopping unevenly around the inverted rim.

A similar piece is found in Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Vol. 1, item 221, by Regina Krahl.

Another similar bowl was discovered in the foundations of the Qingshansi pagoda in Lintong county near Xian, together with a Buddha bone reliquary.

Another two similar pieces are found in the British Museum and Tokiwayama Bunko.

An extremely rare set of a black and white glazed dish and a gray clay bowl with black coating

Tang dynasty (AD 618–907)

d: 14 cm

唐 外黑內白緇素瓷盤與灰陶漆衣鉢

The flat base dish is finely potted, with steeply rounded flaring sides covered inside with white glaze and black glaze applied to the outside, continuing across the base, the base without foot and showing three spur marks.

The bowl with steeply curved sides incurving around the rim, the body in grey clay with black coating. The bowl rests perfectly on top of the dish.

唐代外黑內白緇素瓷平底碟與漆陶鉢。一平底碟,侈 口,外壁施黑釉,內壁施白釉,平底滿釉,上有三支小 如芝麻釘,這種做法在唐朝很罕見。一漆陶鉢,薄胎, 斂口,圓唇,深弧腹斜收小平底,剛剛扣在碟子上。據 考古發掘成果與歷史文獻記載,緇素瓷多見於寺院地 宮、佛教遺址,以及少數貴族墓葬,其功用一作供佛用 器,一作生活用具。緇素瓷在唐朝為寺廟所用,鉢更 是佛教寺廟的用器。這平底碟滿釉支釘燒非常罕見, 而陶鉢剛好完美置於緇素碟上,相信這套碟與鉢曾用 於佛教寺廟。

The body is elegantly potted with eight vertical lobes rising to a tall cylindrical neck flaring at the rim, set with a tall curved spout opposite the strap handle that is applied with a small loop at the top to a similar loop on the concave cover. The ewer and cover are covered with a transparent glaze of a pale greenish-white tone, with the exception of the base.

Similar pieces appear in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession no. 18.57.1, and in the ATAKA Collection, The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, accession no. 00623.

宋 巨鹿磁州窰深鉢

巨鹿古城位於河北省邢台市,北宋大觀二年(1108)

秋,巨鹿因黃河決口被淹於地下。1918年春大旱,村

民掘井挖出大量瓷碗、瓷盤、瓷枕以及漆器殘件、鐵器 等,大部分瓷器上帶有黃土水痕,歷經八百多年的宋城 遺址因此重見天日。一般北宋城址多毀於宋金戰亂,而 巨鹿因整體被淹,保留遺物完整全面,實為瞭解北宋文 化的寶藏,被中外學者譽為「東方龐貝」。1923年, 天津博物院將帶有題字的73件巨鹿瓷器輯為《巨鹿宋器 叢錄》;1925年,英國學者霍普遜等人,通過對巨鹿 宋瓷的深入研究,第一次提出「磁州窯」的概念,獲得 學界認可。巨鹿古城以白瓷為代表的「巨鹿陶」的出 現,是瓷器史上的重大事件,目前英美日韓等公私藏家 所存的宋代磁州窯精品,多出於巨鹿古城。 此件帶有黃土水痕的磁州深鉢出自巨鹿古城。

The brownish yellow lines across the body of the bowl are caused by the loess and water of Chu-Lu-Hsien.

Each well-potted bowl with a flared rim, two painted with floral medallions on the well under a geometric band near the rim, the third with a fish among water weeds under concentric rings.
