When we started this movement at the end of September 2016, many people were skeptical. Over the past number of years Lakewood had been in a heavy growth mode and nothing seemed to be stopping it. While it is nice that many people were and are interested in moving to Lakewood, we’ve all begun to realize that we need to take a serious look at where the community is headed. In order for Lakewood to continue to be a vibrant Town where people can expect a reasonable quality of life and not spend a growing amount of time in traffic, changes need to be made. This growing movement and the reaction by the boards and committee is a testament to the virtually unanimous understanding that the growth of the past needs to slow down.

The question is, why do we have all of this growth? Is it simply a capitalistic spirit that developers have to earn the maximum profit from their land? If so, we’d need to wonder why the planning and zoning boards seemed to be enabling them. Those boards are appointed by the Township Committee which through their appointments to the boards have control over the path that development takes.

The direction that the town wants to take is solidified by a master plan that indicates what the visions are for the future growth of the town. In 2013, a Smart Growth Plan was adopted which says: Lakewood’s population would be expected to increase by another 50,000 between 2010 and 2020 (approximately 5,000 per year) and yet another 80,000 between 2020 and 2030, for a total increase over the next two decades of 130,000 persons, resulting in a total population of 220,000 by 2030.

In order to accomplish this anticipated growth, zones would be changed to accommodate heavy growth. Many areas on the south side of town were pegged as the growth spots for drastic increases in density. While this was done with the intention to accommodate people who wanted to move here, it has gotten to a point where we need to protect the quality of life for the current residents. The duty of the governing body is to protect the welfare, quality of life and safety of citizens who already live here. Only when the quality of life of current residents is met and the proper infrastructure is in place can we consider absorbing additional housing.

With the new master plan in the process of being updated, much scrutiny must to be given to how we approach growth. The biggest factor is that Jackson and Toms River (along with other cities) are now vibrant growing communities. There is simply no need to change the zoning in Lakewood to enable housing opportunities for everyone who wants to move here as there are many better options with more space in the surrounding towns. Additionally, while Lakewood has grown at a frenetic pace, and we now have somewhere over 100,000 residents, we have seen the dramatic increase in traffic. That is a clear indicator that there is no way physically possible for Lakewood to ever house 220,000 people. Although Brooklyn has high density, they have a grid of streets that Lakewood lacks. Additionally, most residents of Lakewood simply do not want the crowded living conditions of Brooklyn and prefer real open spaces and more than just a token blade of grass here or there.

At the Planning Board meeting on Jan. 17th, there was discussion regarding applicants who keep pushing off (carrying) their applications multiple times. In the days prior to the meeting the agenda showed 12 items. As the meeting drew closer, many applicants requested to carry. In the end, only 5 applications were ready to be heard by the board. While at least the applicants had the courtesy to inform the board administrator in advance and the online agenda was updated to reflect this, the board still expressed displeasure. It appears that many applicants keep on carrying their applications (perhaps waiting until public scrutiny dies down) and the board felt that it’s inappropriate to keep on allowing it.

The board will consider guidelines as to how many times an applicant can carry before they need to re-apply.

A

friend approached me one day because he was going to speak at an event and he wanted my input. In the past, he had told me a Dvar Torah and, upon hearing it, I’d added an aspect he felt was very insightful. He couldn’t remember it now, and hoped that if he told it to me I might have the same flash of inspiration. Alas, I didn’t.

He mentioned that when he’d spoken before and used this concept, it had been recorded and placed on YouTube, but it turned out he didn’t say exactly what he’d planned to say so when he went back it wasn’t there. I understood his pain because I, myself, had spoken in shul one Shabbos in recent memory and afterwards I had very little recollection of what I’d said or how I’d said it. If only that could have been recorded.

It got me to thinking how week after week, rabbis around the world get up on Shabbos to speak, often sharing astounding, moving insights, and sadly, they are never recorded, due to the happy fact that on Shabbos we follow HaShem’s laws which would prohibit that. Imagine what a wealth of inspiration we might have if they were taped for future use, though. But perhaps, they already are.

You see, it hit me that even though we might not be hitting record on a video camera, and even if you won’t find this lecture on YouTube or get it in your WhatsApp chat, these things are not lost to posterity.

a student. These words can leave such a mark that decades later the student and his or her family may suffer from the repercussions of the comment that the teacher never thought of again.

Of course, the reverse is true. A kind word or an encouraging expression of confidence in someone may be the key to giving them the forward push they need to succeed. Maybe the smile and wink that made the student feel the teacher was on her side helped her to break through the obstacles she faced in life, even if the teacher doesn’t recall doing it.

The truth is, it’s not even about a rabbi or teacher.

Every single one of us has interactions with people who just may remember the things we’ve said long after we’ve forgotten. Perhaps they may not remember what we’ve said, but they will remember how we made them feel.

If it was a positive interaction, then we have had the opportunity to shift the trajectory of their life from this point forward in a more positive direction.

I won’t mention the other possibility but suffice it to say that nothing in life just “goes away.”

Maybe it would be helpful to think about the fact that from stores to streets to traffic light posts, we’re constantly on camera. Someone, somewhere, is watching what we do; listening in, paying attention.

Every word the rabbi says, and how he says it, is being recorded. Not on a film or disc or in some file format that fits on a flash drive, but in the minds, hearts, and souls of the listeners. Though he might not remember what he said, someone else will.

I recall hearing about a woman who was pulled over for speeding. The officer asked if she knew why he’d stopped her. She said, “Yes, Officer, I was driving too fast. I’m sorry.” He was stunned. “Most people try to lie and tell me they weren’t speeding or they didn’t realize it,” he said. “I’ve never had anyone respond like that before.”

The same can be said for teachers. How many a teacher has thrown out a casual remark as a putdown in jest, only to have it seared into the heart of
