From The General Manager May is upon us and if you are like me, you heeded the wisdom of “don’t plant your annuals until after mother’s day”. Lakewood will again be placing annuals in our planting beds. Beth Houlihan will once again be designing the beds and John Keller will do the planting and care throughout the season.

Mowing is in full swing and we started early this year due to the light winter and unseasonably warm February and March. Our equipment Mark Reid will be out and on the City Streets as we get from site to site. Please be careful around the equipment both on and off the streets, I assure you Staff will do the same. Let’s not meet by accident.

On behalf of all of the Staff, we wish all of our Lakewood Mom’s a wonderful Mother’s Day. If you have not already made plans for the day, please consider joining us for Brunch in the Lakewood Oaks Banquet Room. Our Culinary Team led by Executive Chef Molly L. Meyers will be there to assure a very tasty and memorable start to your special day.

Congratulations to the three (3) new LPOA and LHC Board Members. Thank you to all of the LPOA Members who were candidates and we all appreciate your service to your community via the election process.

Message for Pet Owners We all love our pets. Whether you’re a dog person or a cat person, most of us have a special family member of a different species. We think of them so much as members of the family that we sometimes forget to be responsible pet owners. Throughout the year, we’ve highlighted some concerns, and would like to share them. Let’s let them serve as a reminder to be mindful of our neighbors, and always be responsible pet owners.

1.

Remember the leash law. The City of Lee’s Summit Ordinance is that a pet must be on a leash or tethered. Citations may be issued by Animal Control for any infractions. Do not let your dog or cat roam into your neighbor’s yard. Your neighbor may seem ok with it, but that’s usually not the case.

2.

Pick up after your pet. No one wants to step in the gift that little Fido left on common ground.

There are many pet waste stations located in and around the area for your convenience. This is very disrespectful to your fellow Lakewood members.

3.

Take good care of your pet. Never leave him or her outdoors in inclement weather or without food and water.

4.

Don’t allow excessive barking. This is a nuisance anytime, if left unchecked. However, there is a noise ordinance in Lee’s Summit that begins at 10:00pm. Your neighbors may opt to call the police department to report the violation.

5.

Keep a safe distance from pedestrians. If you do not have a fence, and you tether your pet on your property, be mindful of where you do that. Please refrain from tethering your dog in the front yard, or close to any sidewalk or common area. Your neighbors use the sidewalks and common areas, and should be able to use the property without concern of nearby pets.

2017 Boat Registration stickers are now available in the LPOA office.

The stickers are $31.50 for non-motorized and $81.00 for motorized.

There will be an additional $6.50 charge if you did not purchase your stickers for your previously registered watercraft before May 1st, 2017. There is a $19.00 charge if you would like for staff to attach your stickers for you.

Beginning in 2017, Members ID cards will be electronically scanned at the pool gates. This will allow us to be more efficient at check in, as well as ensure that only current and valid LPOA members are using your amenities. This means that ALL Lakewood members and valid residents will need to have the new ID cards issued to them. Staff at the pools will NOT allow entry into a pool without first scanning and verifying each resident’s ID card.

If you are a boat slip lessee, the new ID card is your key to your marina gate. In the near future, field staff will use handheld devices to scan the new ID cards as well, determining that a person is a valid and current Lakewood resident when utilizing the tennis courts, basketball courts, or any other Lakewood owned property. If a current and valid ID is not presented, staff will NOT allow use of the property.

As you can see, it’s imperative that everyone come to the Administrative Office as soon as possible. The closer we get to spring, the longer the lines will be. Our office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm. We are also open Wednesday 8:30am to 7:00pm. Feel free to call us at 816-373-4326 with any questions.

Summer Information July 4th LPOA Pontoon Boat Rentals In an effort to ensure a fair process, we made a change to our procedures for renting the LPOA Pontoon Boats for Independence Day. Between now and 5:00pm June 2nd, 2017, anyone who wishes to rent a pontoon boat for the 4th of July this year will be required to enter a random drawing. You’ll need to come into the LPOA Administrative Office and enter your name into the lottery. On June 5th, 2 “hats” will be drawn from. One will contain the names of members who wish to rent a boat. The other will contain the time slots available for that day. Staff will first randomly draw a name, and then a coinciding time slot. Members will then be notified, and will have 48 hours to have a signed lease agreement executed. No exceptions will be made to this timeframe. After 48 hours, the next name will be pulled from the hat. This will continue until all contracts have been executed.

It’s very important that if you wish to rent a Pontoon Boat on July 4th, that you get your name entered prior to June 2nd. This will be published in the Ripples and will be in regular e-blasts in our effort to ensure that the information is received.

Pontoon Boat Rental Lakewood has two pontoon boats available for residents to rent. Pontoon boats are available in 2-hour blocks on weekdays and 4-hour blocks on weekends and holidays. You pick the time. ‘All Day’ rentals are available on weekdays only (excluding holidays). The boats can only be rented 30 days in advance at the earliest. Call 816-3734326 to reserve today!

Pending Amendment NOTICE OF PENDING AMENDMENT TO LPOA ARB/ARC GUIDELINES

In accordance with LPOA By-laws, notice is hereby given to LPOA membership of pending amendment to LPOA ARB/ARC Guidelines. The following language was introduced for consideration and accepted at the 4/13/17 Board of Directors meeting. At their meeting on 6/8/17 the Board will again consider this language and vote on adoption. Current language is struck through and proposed language is underlined.

Composition Luxury Designer Shingles Composition Luxury Designer Shingles are comprised of a combination of asphalt, fiberglass, and related materials, and are coated with colored granules. Luxury Designer shingles are those that are designed to mimic real slate or wood shake shingles, and offer a three dimensional appearance. Only those materials fitting this description will be considered for approval. Colors must be in the Black, Brown, and Gray families.

Required to be installed with sheet metal valleys and flashing. Shingles themselves may not be used to form closed valleys; Required to be installed with matching and preformed hip and ridge shingles; Required to be installed over solid decking placed either directly on the roof rafters or atop existing spaced sheathing lumber. All existing roofing materials will be removed down to the stringers and/or 1x4’s. Shingles may not be installed over an existing shake or shingle roof; Required to be UL Class A fire rated.

Attention Lakewood Walkers, Joggers & Bikers I’d like to remind everyone of a few safety precautions that should be taken when walking, jogging, or biking in the community. I personally drive into Lakewood in the wee hours of the morning when it’s still dark and always see folks out walking quite often in or very near the drive lanes and wearing dark colored clothes.

A few reminders for everyone, whether walking, biking, or driving: • • • • • • •

Always wear something reflective, front and back, when walking, jogging, or biking.

Carry a flashlight.

Stay on the sidewalks when possible while walking.

Stay in the Bike Lane when biking.

Stay alert for vehicular traffic.

When driving in darker conditions, slow down in order to further your sight distance.

Stay Alert! Never text and drive. Keep an eye out for pedestrians or hazards.

Please be safe on our Lakewood streets, for everyone’s sake!

LPOA Luncheon The Lakewood Garden Club hosted the annual LPOA Employee Luncheon on Thursday, March 16th at the Lakewood Oaks Clubhouse. This luncheon is given as a thank you to the LPOA staff for all their hard work for the Lakewood community. This team of employees cares for our golf course, pool areas, playgrounds, fountains, common areas, club houses, docks, tennis courts, security and all of the landscaped areas in Lakewood. They attend to many of our needs and repairs. The office and restaurant staff are included in that team. The Lakewood Garden Club members recognize the outstanding job that the LPOA staff has done throughout the year and what an asset they are to the Lakewood community. Debbie Beal was the LPOA Employee Luncheon Committee Chairperson this year.

Her committee included: Carol Freeman, Vicki Mitchell, Deb Morgan and Pat Adair. The committee decorated the tables and luncheon buffet area with a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Carolyn Hall-Evans, the Garden Club President, gave opening remarks to thank the staff for making Lakewood a great place to live. The Garden Club members prepared. the lunch. Debbie would like to thank Ellen Hamilton, at Signature Massage, (a Garden Club member) for donating a massage. She would also like to thank the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs and Duluth Trading Company for their donations. This year all 33 employees who attended received a gift bag.

Lakewood Swim Team

The Lakewood Subdivision is a vibrant, active community in Lee’s Summit, MO that nearly 3,000 family’s call home. Our summer swim league consists of more than 200 boys and girls, ages 5-18, which represent over 100 families. With the exception of our coaches, this program is entirely run by volunteers, and provides an inexpensive opportunity for local youth to be introduced to the sport of swimming and to participate in recreational swimming competitions. Like our coach says, this is the single most important sport because it’s the only sport that can save someone’s life!

The Lakewood Swim Team is a member of the Suburban Swim League which is comprised of 8 Lee’s Summit neighborhoods including Bent Tree Bluffs, New Longview, Oak Tree Farm, Raintree Lake, Windsboro, and Winterset, along with our 2 teams that make up Lakewood. The league runs from early June to Mid-July in which our Lakewood teams host 6 Wednesday Night meets as well as the League Championship at our Lakewood neighborhood pool.

Lakewood Swim Team is seeking sponsorship from local Lee’s Summit businesses that serve our neighborhood community. We believe that our partnerships are mutually beneficial, as we are able to provide a captive audience to the businesses who support us. Lakewood Clubs Garden Club Wednesday, May 24 9:00 to 9:30 am - Refreshments 9:30 to Noon - Program / Business Meeting Truman Medical Center Lakewood, Truman Room 2 ATTRACTING BIRDS AND OTHER WILDLIFE TO YOUR BACKYARD Many of us don’t realize we can have a wildlife refuge in our own backyards. Our speaker this month, Nik Hiremath, will help us understand the steps we can take to create a space that will improve the lives of birds and other wildlife and provide a fun and rewarding experience for us as well. He will discuss the four elements of a backyard refuge and provide examples, photos, and suggestions on how to create each of them.

His presentation will especially focus on the birdrelated aspects of each of the elements needed for an effective and beautiful wildlife refuge. In addition, Nik will present many fun facts and other information about one bird in particular— the hummingbird—and help us gain a better understanding of this amazing and beautiful bird.

Nik and his wife Theresa both grew up in Missouri and are UMKC graduates. They have been enjoying backyard bird feeding for decades and were thrilled when the opportunity arose to run their own Wild Birds Unlimited store here in Kansas City. They bought the Leawood, Kansas store in August 2015 and thoroughly enjoy their mission of bringing people and nature together and doing it with excellence.

The Lakewood Stitchers Club meets the last Tuesday of each month in The Argyle, from 5:308:00. Bring your knitting, crochet, needlework or other portable crafts.
