LOCALLY OWNEDSINCE FOREVER BULLETIN

Welcoming newcomers

With the recent weather event and the boil water notice, it is increasingly important for Council to understand and connect with all communities throughout our district to ensure key information is easily accessible and gets to you effectively. One way of helping us connect is through Welcoming Communities | Te Waharoa ki ngā Hapori. We are proud to be a part of this programme which supports newcomers to feel welcome, able to participate in the economic, civic, cultural and social life of their new community, and access some of the day-to-day services they need including those services delivered by Council.

Our newcomers include migrants recently established (under five years), long established migrants (more than five years), Pasifika migrants, international students, and anyone else relocating from other parts of Aotearoa New Zealand and from overseas - this could be students, families, business owners, selfemployed professionals, investors, and many others. Through the Welcoming Communities programme, we have identified around 22 ethnic and Pasifika communities who have been living in our district anywhere between two and 20 years or more. This excludes the traditional UK, Irish, American, Canadian and Australian migrants who are settled here. In addition, some schools’ demographic data mention having between 44 to 61 different ethnicities. This shows how much our district is becoming increasingly diverse.

Designed by Immigration NZ, the Welcoming Communities programme is set to achieve “settlement outcomes” for newcomers, especially persons with ethnic, cultural, linguistic and racial backgrounds. Settlement outcomes include the provision of translation and interpreting services, ongoing workshops on how to access and understand our NZ health and education systems, our laws, employment and tenancy rights, an affordable service provision of ESOL courses, an understanding of our rich local history including te ao Māori and te Tiriti o Waitangi. But above all, Council and partners need to ensure our newcomers are well informed in case of any civil defence emergency, like the one we recently experienced.

One of the key milestones of the programme is the development of a Welcoming Plan 2024-2027 for our district, in collaboration with two local Advisory Groups of community volunteers representing Whakatipu and Upper Clutha. The Plan, which will be shared with the wider community for feedback next autumn, will list key priorities that will enable Council, key agencies and the wider community to create a sense of belonging for our migrant/ethnic communities.

As Mayor, I am passionate about building a welcoming and inclusive community and committed to creating an environment where QLDC and numerous stakeholders play an important role in ensuring that all residents can thrive and belong.

December date for boiling water

Thousands of Queenstown residents and workers could be boiling water until early December, due to restrictions prompted by the cryptosporidiosis outbreak.

Those supplied water by Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Two Mile network, including the CBD and Fernhill, face a 10-week wait as temporary UV treatment equipment is installed at the plant.

The estimated completion date is 8 December.

However, properties supplied by the Kelvin Heights water supply network, which includes Frankton, could see the notice lifted by the end of the school holidays (8 October).

Queenstown’s mayor Glyn Lewers says QLDC is also continuing to work with water regulator Taumata Arowai to explore options that would enable the boil water notice to be lifted earlier everywhere.

A source of infection has yet to be identified and testing of the water supplies continues to return negative results for the presence of cryptosporidium or other signs of contamination.

QLDC issued the boil water notice on 18 September due to the outbreak. It was then cemented in place by Taumata Arowai, who issued a ‘noncompliance’ order on QLDC due to the lack of a protozoa barrier at its Two Mile water treatment plant.

That left QLDC scrambling to find a solution, to help thousands of frustrated residents and businesses.

As Lakes Weekly Bulletin went to press, there were 56 confirmed cases of cryptosporidium, 12 probable cases, and 8 under investigation.

However, Lewers says these can all be linked back to the original outbreak. “... increasingly the indicators point to their being no current contamination issue which is why we are pushing to lift the boil water notice in its entirety as soon as possible,” he says.

Lewers reinforced the need for people to adhere to the notice in the interim. Water testing is ongoing.

QLDC has ordered UV disinfection equipment, an effective barrier treatment against cryptosporidium, for the Two Mile water treatment plant. But the right-sized equipment is not immediately available, so it will install temporary systems over the next 10 weeks.

“Once the larger equipment arrives, we will swap out the temporary systems for use elsewhere in the district,” QLDC General Manager Property & Infrastructure Tony Avery says.

“This approach, and taking this opportunity to secure other units, means that we are able to promptly implement UV treatment not only at Two Mile but also water supplies at Western Wānaka, Beacon Point in Wānaka, and Luggate.”

That 10-week programme for the temporary UV includes undertaking detailed design, procurement of the component parts and fabrication of the container housing for the equipment, delivery, site connection and commissioning, and flushing of the network.

Further details of the full programme, including the timeline for installing the larger UV reactors at Two Mile will be provided this week.

Avery says last week, QLDC submitted a plan to Taumata Arowai to isolate the Kelvin Heights water supply network from the Two Mile Network. It already has effective barrier treatment against protozoa such as cryptosporidium.

QLDC is working hard to see normal service returned as quickly as possible, he says, and aims to lift that before the end of the school holidays. Lewers says he’s personally frustrated with the Kelvin Heights boil water notice in particular remaining in place any longer.

Public Health has identified some cases of secondary infection of crypto. This means that there are some people who are getting it from people they live or work with.

Latest health advice

• Wash your hands with lots of soap and water for at least 20 seconds and then dry them thoroughly on a clean towel

• Do not rely on hand sanitizer as this is not effective against cryptosporidium

• If someone in your household has cryptosporidiosis, ensure all surfaces, including door handles, are cleaned regularly with a cleaning product that contains hydrogen peroxide. Chlorine based products do not work against cryptosporidium and bleachbased products are not as effective

• Sharing bathwater can spread crypto to other people. If you or any of your children, including babies, have had crypto, or crypto symptoms, do not share bathwater until symptom free for two weeks.

• Anyone who has had symptoms of crypto (diarrhoea) shouldn’t enter a swimming or spa pool either, until they have been symptom free for two weeks

• QLDC will continue to provide ongoing messaging about the boil water notice and share relevant health advice from Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand Southern

Return of the gap yearers

Gap year travellers have been a noticeable absence from the Queenstown jobs market since the pandemic hit.

Once a staple of the hospo and tourism scene, and Queenstown Bay beach, the backpacking youngsters, who take an OE between high school and university or full time work, have been slow to return to New Zealand’s shores. High prices for plane tickets have likely been a huge factor for these budgetconscious working holidaymakers, from the UK, Europe, the US and beyond. But in July, a year since the borders reopened fully, the Government announced relaxed conditions for young Brits, who can now stay and work up to three years, while increasing the number of Spaniards allowed in under the scheme.

National, too, has pledged to tweak the system if elected, including extending the age limit from 32 to 35 years old, capturing those late blooming careersabbatical gap yearers.

Last month 4,938 working holiday visas were issued, back to pre-Covid levels for the first time, and that doesn’t capture the Aussies, who can work here visa-free. From January to May, there were 1.4 million guest nights recorded at backpackers across NZ, compared to 1.7m for the whole of 2022.

In a recent survey by UK company StressFreeCarRental.com, Queenstown ranked fifth out of the top eight destinations for gap year travellers. Five of the others were budget-friendly Asian destinations, along with California and Cairns, Australia.

Despite being “pricey”, the South Island tourist hot spot is “well worth visiting in a gap year”, because of its stunning world-famous landscapes, epic nightlife and employment opportunities (although it also says long term accommodation is “easy” to find).

Destination Queenstown boss Mat Woods says reputation is everything on the world stage and it’s taken decades to earn that good reputation.

“It’s more than just the nightlife too. It’s the ability to be able to work and still play, whether you work during the day or at night,” Woods says.

Recreational activities like mountain biking, skiing, rock climbing and trail running are all within such close proximity to the town, which is appealing to backpackers.

“It’s all so accessible. You can finish work up Skyline then mountain bike down.”

It’s important not to underestimate the value of the huge domestic gap year market too, he says.

“They may have finished school or be part way through a degree and potentially they may have connections here which makes it easier for them to find accommodation,” Woods says.

High contributing travellers stay longer, forge local connections, learn, and give back to our community.

“Backpackers totally fit this category as they usually stay six months or more, then go home and promote our pinot and craft beers. They’re great ambassadors.”

Backpacker employment levels have been picking up, he says, rising closer to pre-Covid levels. And while finding longer-term accommodation does take a while, there’s still good housing out there long-term.

Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce boss Sharon Fifield says working holidaymakers are an important part of Queenstown’s workforce and keep the town humming in peak seasons.

“They’re high contributing given they visit here to both work and experience the area, so here’s to many more gap year Brits coming our way,” Fifield says. An estimated 45 million backpacking trips taken across the globe annually.

Rong,

Hang onto your hats – El Nino is here!

We’ll be hanging onto our sunhats this spring, and bracing for some very hot days, possibly 30degC in October, as this year’s El Nino weather pattern bears down on Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago.

NIWA principal scientist forecasting and media Chris Brandolino says while Queenstown’s central positioning is a little harder to predict, the warm 100km/hr winds last month were typical of El Nino. This is often followed by heavy rain as was the case with the big electric storm here last month. “That week was a dress rehearsal for spring and summer,” he says.

While El Nino produces wetter in the west and hotter and windier in the east, the Wakatipu’s likely to see windier conditions, typical of spring.

“This spring is likely to produce wild swings in temperature. Air pressure in New Zealand, with its dominant westerlies, will leave the country more exposed than normal to dramatic swings in temperatures,” Brandolino says. “This variability will be expressed by spells of unseasonable warmth from Australian air masses and sharply colder southerlies flowing in behind, with little middle ground.”

Each El Nino has its own personality - 2015 produced a “quintessential El Nino” until January, with October temperatures reaching 30degC. “I’d be most surprised if we didn’t get 30degC this October,” Brandolino says.

However, strong westerly fronts may occasionally impact the western and lower South Island too, bringing heavy rain and flooding risks to the West Coast, inland Otago and Southland.

Bannockburn’s Carrick Peonies owner John Chambers says the emerging El Nino spring weather – predicted by some to be the worst in 60 to 80 years, is a bit concerning for growers.

“We’ve been told that apart from stronger, more frequent winds we could get temperatures into the late 20s this month (October) and if that occurs around our late October harvest, we can’t get the stems picked quickly enough,” Chambers says. “We had two 30degC back-toback days during a similar El Nino weather pattern in 2015 and our season lasted 10 days to two weeks – half the normal time.”

He lost several thousand stems with only a brief 30-minute window before the buds turn in that kind of early heat. “I feel the way the weather

pattern is heading at present that it will have some impact on us, but it’s too early to tell.”

It’s not only warmer daytime temperatures in spring that affect budding in his in-demand export quality flowers sent all over the world, but also warmer night-time temperatures expected during El Nino. During that hot October spell night-time temperatures didn’t fall below 10degC. They’re usually 3degC to 6degC.

“A flower can be not ready to pick then if it’s too hot in just 30 minutes it’s gone, and we can’t use it. Bud stage is quite critical to ensure the right quality when it lands with a florist in New York so it can affect our export production.” In reverse, he lost half of his 20,000 to 23,000 peonies during last year’s spring polar blast. “We are very dependent on weather. In 23 years, that was the worst,” he says.

The northwesterly gusts of 90km/hr on 20 September, followed by torrential rain, were a bit of a foretaste and while Chambers was mostly sheltered, another Central Otago grower reported some broken stems. Rebecca Trotter, of Luggate’s Red Bridge Berries, says strawberries liked the cooler winter and they’re looking better than last year, although they have a smaller crop this year due to failed, storm-hit crops in the North Island. “They only produced 30% of normal production and that’s where we get all our plants from,” she says. Plant prices are really high as a result so Trotter’s hoping people will want to come pick their own. Award-winning winemaker Grant Taylor, of Valli Wines, says buds aren’t even out yet and crop levels are usually set by flowering levels from the previous year. “It was such a good warm summer so we’re expecting good flowers, but anything can happen. You go with what you get. There’s nothing you can do to prepare for it.”

MetService forecaster Gerard Bellam predicts more of a swing to changeable westerly weather and less easterly for Queenstown LakesCentral Otago now that El Nino is here. “Last year the south of the South Island was sheltered from fronts, but you can expect more fronts from the west now,” he says. However, El Nino is also likely to bring some very warm, hot spells ahead of those fronts. “You’ll probably be returning to a more normal spring. You’ve had less wind the last few years due to La Nina.”

Podiums to finish the season

Queenstown Lakes ski season is about to wrap for 2023 but there’s still been time late on for local youngsters to take down some medals Wānaka Freeskier Luca Harrington took the win at the heavily stacked international FIS Australia New Zealand Cup Slopestyle competition, at Cardrona Alpine Resort on Sunday.

The comp was part of the four-day 2023 Cardrona NZ Freestyle Nationals, which faced challenging weather conditions, as spring brought seasonal high winds to region.

What was originally scheduled to be a slopestyle qualification day and a slopestyle final day, ended up being changed to two days of slopestyle qualification.

After his win Harrington says: “It’s awesome, it’s always nice to take the win on home snow. It was great to be able to hold it down and hopefully provide some inspiration for the younger kiwi athletes and prove to them that you can make it in this sport growing up in Wānaka.”

Harrington laced together a technical combination on the top two rails, before heading into the four jumps, throwing down four huge tricks in four different directions of rotation.

Lucas Ball (CAN) was second and Martyn Kingston (USA) third. Kiwi Fergus McArthur (17, Auckland) finished just 0.33 points off the podium in fourth place.

Current Slopestyle and Big Air Junior World Champion Taiga Hasegawa, of Japan, won the snowboard slopestyle, with teammate Kira Kimura second, and Switzerland’s Nicolas Huber third. Kiwi Dane Menzies (18, Wānaka) finished fourth.

Earlier in the week, Mischa Thomas (15, Auckland) claimed the gold in the women’s FIS Australia New Zealand Cup Slopestyle competition. And 15-year-old Queenstowner Madeleine Disbrowe joined Thomas on the podium in bronze medal position, showing the depth and breadth of the women’s freeski talent in New Zealand.

Disbrowe, who finished fourth in the FIS Freeski Slopestyle Junior World Championships last month, was stoked.

The men’s freeski podium

“The biggest thing for me today was dialing up my rail game, I did a disaster 270 onto the down rail which is a new trick for me,” she says. “I am pleased because today was the first time I have landed it in competition and it’s been a big goal for me to spin onto the rails!”

Ava Beer (14, Te Anau) represented New Zealand in the snowboarding comp, finishing fourth.

Cardrona Alpine Resort is due to close on 15 October, with The Remarkables closing this Sunday, 8 October. Coronet Peak and Treble Cone have already closed for 2023.

Spring: Week Two - Mulch

Last week, we looked at three free garden fertilising tips that won’t cost you a cent (almost) and this week we follow that up with six free mulching ideas that your garden will love. With spring well and truly under way it’s time to enjoy building back your vege garden beds.

If you don’t have a lot of room, repurposing pots, buckets and bins you can easily create veggie beds for very little cost, especially if you have a small garden or balcony. If you’ve got space, start with one to two beds and expand each year as you grow in confidence.

If you’re unsure how to start or need some compost gardening tips, drop me a message on the Dr Compost Facebook page.

1. The first free mulch is grass clippings! We’re about to hit lawn-mowing season and a plentiful supply of this green wonder. No longer seen as a painful thing to do, it’s time to see this ever-replenishing supply as a useful resource. In the garden, use it as a mulch around veggies to feed the soil. It has the added bonus of keeping the ‘carrot fly’ away. Keep mulching your carrots with the clippings. In the compost heap, grass clippings are a great nitrogen source. You can quickly fill up a bin alternating layers of grass with a carbon source (wood chips / leaves / straw). Remember to keep all grass clippings away from the base of plants. No touching allowed.

Once a week

Every day - 13%

Once a week - 78%

Once a month - 8%

2. Comfrey leaves. Not all gardens are big enough to have a comfrey patch. If you have any fruit trees, you can have comfrey growing underneath them as a living mulch. Cutting the leaves multiple times during the growing season gives you a plentiful supply of mineral rich mulching matter to put around the base of your veggies. Be generous, these leaves break down quickly. Ask a friend to dig up and share some comfrey root with you.

3. OK, these ones are almost free and if you collect the seed will become free! Broad Beans. Broad beans grow fast, produce lots of luscious mulching material, have the added bonus of fixing heaps of nitrogen in the root zone and there’s also a tasty bean! You could grow a dedicated bed a month prior to planting your main crop (now’s a great time). They don’t have to grow to full size. Cut them down when you need the bed. Leave them where you cut them down and plant your seedlings in this great mulch. The other option is to plant the broad beans around your heavy feeders. Cut them in half every time they get a bit unruly or in the way. They will come back a few times with side shoots. Then you can just chop and drop.

4. Free seeds. Almost free. Getting together with some fellow gardeners with your seed packets in hand and swapping seeds.

Which is your favourite season in Queenstown?  Spring

Winter - 10%

Spring - 19%

Autumn - 16%

There were 237 respondents this week. If you would like to take part: you can sign up on the LWB Facebook page.

5. Free seeds number two. The local libraries have free seeds to give away. They are creating seed banks for people to bring surplus saved seed and to give seed to you for free.

6. Free seeds number three. This is the year to save some of your own seeds. Choose one or two vegetables you’d like to save seeds from. Easy ones are Heritage tomatoes, pumpkins and lettuce. With the lettuce, don’t save seed from the one that bolts first. Save the plant that looks great, has no disease and is last to bolt in the heat. Happy composting and gardening.

BOIL WATER NOTICE AFFECTING THE QUEENSTOWN WATER SUPPLY NETWORK

This notice is issued following confirmation of a number of local cases of illness caused by the protozoa, cryptosporidium. The source of these cases is not yet confirmed but the drinking water supply is being investigated. In the meantime, a boil water notice is in place to protect public health.

• Food preparation (including washing uncooked foods such as salads, vegetables and fruit)

• Preparing baby/infant formula

• Washing food utensils

• Brushing teeth

• Pets’ drinking water

Water for showering, laundry or other uses does not need to be boiled. Be cautious when bathing babies and young children as they might swallow water.

If you are feeling unwell

The most common symptoms of cryptosporidium infection are smelly, watery diarrhoea and stomach cramps. If you live or work in or are visiting the affected area and are experiencing these symptoms, call your family doctor or Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free advice from a registered nurse 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

How to stop the spread of infection

The best thing you and your whānau can do to stop the spread of cryptosporidium (crypto) infection is to practise good hand hygiene. This means scrubbing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and drying them thoroughly with a clean towel. Note: hand sanitizer does not work against cryptosporidium.

If someone in your household has crypto, please make sure all surfaces, including door handles, are cleaned regularly with a cleaning product that contains hydrogen peroxide. Chlorine based products do not work against crypto and bleach based products are not as effective.

COMMUNITY NOTES

Biketober is back

As far as inventions go, the humble bicycle is up there with the best. Egalitarian transport, gentle exercise and pure, simple joy. Throughout its history, the cycle has opened up worlds of possibility. Today, it offers one of the simplest forms of climate action. And we need it, desperately; if we’re going to reach net carbon zero by 2030, we’ve got six years to halve our emissions. And it’s not going to happen from the car.

Biketober is back for the second year to celebrate all things pedal-powered. Run by not-for-profit Wao Aotearoa, the annual Southern Lakes Festival of Cycling will transform the month of October with workshops, races, family events, film nights and more.

Biketober is a celebration, and a rallying cry. According to researchers at the University of Innsbruck, driving 500 metres equates to roughly 1kg of glacial ice melt. We need to change our behaviour, fast. This festival is a chance to ignite an active transport culture in our community, and to gather in the name of a future on a liveable planet. A future filled with bicycles.

Across Queenstown, Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Wānaka, Alexandra and Roxburgh there’ll be a range of events for all ages, from a native plant cycle tour, six-hour mountain bike race and e-bike picnic to film nights, maintenance workshops and a kōrero on bike-packing.

Climate takes centre stage

Wao Aotearoa’s annual climate festival will feature more than 40 different events, workshops, films, pop-ups, and tours taking place throughout Wānaka, Queenstown and Glenorchy.

The full programme for the festival, which is held from 24-29 October and draws climate and sustainability experts from across Aotearoa and around the world, has now been released.

“This year we’re focusing on collective action,” Wao General Manager Monique Kelly says.

“Coming together for a concentrated period each year provides us an anchor point, where we can align on ‘where are we at now’, and decide ‘where we want to be heading together next’. When we come together we can drive collective action to generate greater change.”

The 2023 programme will focus on circular economy and living lightly, as well as partnerships and collaboration through a series of governance for purpose workshops and regenerative tourism hui.

Community resilience will also be spotlighted as well as playing host once again to the kōreros, the bigger conversations which ask “What will 2050 look like?” and how climate will impact supply chains in “This Climate Business”.

The programme includes comprehensive workshops, with full days focusing on regenerative tourism and better building, as well as targeted workshops on communication for change and the Right to Repair.

The six-day festival from the community non-profit, established six years ago, also celebrates the incredible mahi taking place in our community right now, with a series of tours and tiny talks featuring local sustainability experts and climate action heroes.

Things kicked off on 30 September, with Boots 2 Bikes in Wānaka, in what was a fun afternoon in a closed-off Ardmore carpark combining retro ski gear and bikes.

Wao Summit program manager Babu Blatt, part of the organising team behind Biketober, hopes to see way more bikes on our roads come October.

“I’m most looking forward to the Chargeabout Tour De Fridge: it combines bikes, community, quirkiness, music and food/drinks - all my faves!” Blatt says.

There is the Glenorchy Gravel Grind on Saturday, 14 October as well as a festival of biking events across Labour weekend at the Cyclorama ebike festival in Arrowtown

Amongst other highlights will be the Wao Green Drinks on 19 October, exploring Queenstown being a ‘10 minute city’, the two bike film nights on 10 October and 17.

As well as official Wao Biketober events, Blatt says this year the number of partner events has ramped up. “It’s awesome - the whole community is coming on board!” Activities, many of which are free, include group rides, social events, tours and a week’s worth of activities for kids.

And if it’s competition that gets you moving, try entering the Biketober Challenge through Lovetoride.net. You might surprise yourself, and inspire your mates to get involved and give you a run for your money.

At the end of the day, we need to get out of our cars in whatever way we can. Because, whilst the Southern Lakes is a region which goes crazy for recreational biking, we’re not doing so well transport-wise. Across 2021 and 2022, the Wao initiative, Get SMART, Get Moving ran a local transport survey to find out how our community was moving around. Despite 70% of people having access to a cycle, people were making the majority of their trips (most of which were short - under 10 kilometres) in the car.

Whether it’s an e-bike picnic, a mountain bike race or a night about bikepacking which sparks your interest, Biketober has got something for every appetite. If we want a liveable planet, we urgently need to change what we’re doing, but it needn’t be grim. Get your bike ready, and we’ll see you at the festival.

Digitising the past, to protect it for the future

Lakes District Museum is in a race against time to protect the Wakatipu’s past and bring it ‘back to the future’.

One of the basin’s most popular tourist attractions, and on one of Arrowtown’s most significant historical goldrush sites, this fascinating mass treasure trove is hugely rich in local history.

It’s always been freely accessible to everyone from film script writers and researchers to genealogists and school groups. Museum director David Clarke says the challenge now is to ensure every archive is digitised so that it’s even more widely accessible and protected for future generations.

“We have thousands of paper archives, photos, meeting minutes, books and objects, some are digitised, but 80% are not,” he says. “Papers Past– a digitised version of the country’s newspapers, is an amazing research tool – a treasure trove of information, and we’re sitting on one of those here.”

It’s a huge task that requires digital archivist specialists and the right equipment.

The museum also has 300 existing oral histories recorded on tape from those who’ve passed that also need to be safely digitised.

“We’d also like to focus on the stories of our new communities locally and get them involved in the museum with some of their oral histories,” Clarke says. There are some 61 different nationalities represented in the Wakatipu.

“We see their children in our educational programmes and as part of our museum audience. We realise we don’t necessarily interact with this new audience and hear their stories, so they too need to be shared on a digital platform.”

All of these artefacts and histories need to be made more widely available to the public through quick, easy access online, although Clarke says they “won’t be taking the detective out of it” for those who still love to dig and delve in wonder through the museum archives.

Among the treasures are documents donated by Wakatipu pioneer William Rees’ great, great granddaughter Rosemary Marryat. These include a letter from his famous English cricketer godson W. G. Grace. “He wrote to Rees saying the Australians had played in ‘bad spirit’,” Clarke grins.

“Some of these are priceless documents and really interesting ephemera like goldrush ball tickets, farming receipts and serviettes off the old lake steamers,” Clarke says. “Once digitised these can be used in books, by researchers looking at council plans, filmmakers, interior designers, design consultants, anyone. It just makes it a lot easier and faster.”

Lakes District Museum was recently named among five finalists in the latest round of Impact 100 grant funding applications, with the winners to be announced at an awards gala on 25 October. Two $100,000 grants are up for grabs this year.

If successful, the museum would use the $100k to contract two assistant archivists for a year and buy new equipment to get the job done. “It’s a huge process and this money would pay those staff and buy the necessary specialist scanners that can take the likes of old council minutes books and digitise them,” Clarke says.

“There are programmes now that convert copper plate writing to Word Documents.” New camera gear capable of digitising larger works like maps will be purchased.

“Until now we’ve relied on a photocopier and scanner that is 20 years old. This funding would give us the kickstart and then we can continue to selffund the operation ourselves.”

However, the main priority is to protect the archives. “A museum director is always nervous when they hear a fire siren. Heaven forbid that ever happens,” Clarke says. “It’s our responsibility to protect the district’s history.” The museum has good storage, but all these items need to be moved onto the cloud. “At present staff take any existing digital records on a portable hard drive across to the Post Office’s fireproof safe each week.”

Museum staff have been incredibly busy these last few years with fundraising for and completing the $3 million-plus earthquake strengthening project. It’s now time to focus on its ‘Digitising the Past – Inspiring the Future’ project, he says.

The next concern will be how to record contemporary history. “Nobody’s writing love letters anymore and most photos are only on phones, many only looked at once. We want to be able to get people to select their digital photos and deposit them at the museum because they can tell future generations so much about our social history.”

Mountaineer’s memoir 30 years in the making

Wānaka mountaineer Guy Cotter put pandemic lockdowns and travel restrictions to good use by writing his memoir: ‘Everest Mountain Guide – The remarkable story of a Kiwi mountaineer’.

Cotter told Queenstown App podcast The Outlet that in a way he had been writing the book for over 30 years.

“I’d kept diaries of all my expeditions wherever I first went there in 1992,” he said.

“And through Covid, I had a bit of time on my hands. So I figured, well, rather than do nothing, I’ll just complete some projects that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.”

Writing the book was one of them, but it wasn’t a case of him sitting in a quiet study near Wānaka writing for hours. While he started writing during the early days of the pandemic, the rewriting and editing process lasted much longer.

“I’d find myself in a hotel room in Punta Arenas at the bottom of South America between expeditions or Kathmandu or whatever, or in a base camp somewhere trying to rewrite a section and then getting it back [to my editor].”

Cotter says his motivation was to provide some background information about what goes on on Everest.

“Everyone’s got an opinion about what happens on Everest, but people aren’t all aware of all of the detail and all of the backstory and what it really is like on the mountain. I wanted to fill some of those gaps.”

One thing he particularly wanted to include were the events of 1996.

Cotter owns Adventure Consultants, which has been based in Wānaka for more than 25 years. The business was established by Rob Hall and Gary Ball in 1992, and Guy guided on its first commercial expedition to Mt Everest in 1992.

“A lot of people will know about what happened in 1996 with the passing of Rob Hall and Andy

‘Everest Mountain Guide – The remarkable story of a Kiwi mountaineer’ Harris and Doug Hanson, Yasuko Namba, Scott Fischer… I wanted to ensure that there was a preamble to that and that the build-up to ‘96 showed that ‘96 wasn’t just an isolation,” he said. “I also wanted to focus on what happened after that, what it was like for me to take on the mantle of running Adventure Consultants…”

Adventure Consultants downsized after the arrival of Covid-19 and the border restrictions, but the company relaunched globally in 2022 and has been based in a temporary office upstairs in Wānaka’s Spencer House Mall since June this year.

Cotter said there is “a huge amount of drama on a peak like Everest every year” and his book covers much of it, but he also looks at wider issues. “[I try] to give a rounded view of what’s going on on Everest rather than just the dramatic headlines we hear all the time,” he said.

‘Everest Mountain Guide – The remarkable story of a Kiwi mountaineer’ is due to be released on October 13.

Details have yet to be confirmed for a Wānaka book launch.

Multicultural Festival returns, bigger and better

The second annual Queenstown Multicultural Festival will go ahead this Saturday at Queenstown Events Centre. The koha event is organised by a committee that represents the multi-ethnic communities in the region, and the festival aims to celebrate and promote the diversity of cultures, ethnicities and traditions here. Following a successful debut in 2022 at the Memorial Centre, the event has grown this year to include more of our local multicultural communities and is to be held in a larger space. There were 900 visitors last year, and they’re expecting more to attend this time.

Eric Lim is the co-chair of the event and is helping to coordinate the team of volunteers. He’s taken on last year’s feedback to make this a successful and welcoming day for all.

“Last year’s feedback said that it was more Asian cultural and not multicultural enough," he says. "This year we decided to make it right and we invited a lot of groups and communities from around Queenstown. We got the support from Welcoming Communities, which is Sylvia [Dancose], who is the connector for us, joining all the communities and leaders together.

“We have a selection of volunteers that all help out in various roles. It’s quite a challenging process and also quite a rewarding one because you can see everyone come together – some feeling quite committed to the process and some may feel a little intimidated as we’ve jumped from a smaller scale to a bigger scale. The main objective is that we want to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone to come and join this event.”

Lim stresses the importance of everyone coming together as one and celebrating that togetherness. There will be three main pillars of the event to help achieve their goals. The first is food, because kai brings everyone together! There are going to be a number of food trucks and individuals serving up traditional dishes from many different countries and cultures.

Next will be performances – there’s a jam-packed programme lined up. Some of what will be on offer includes traditional dancing from the Philippines, a Japanese drumming organisation, singers in a range of different dialogues and languages, Indonesian dancing, karate demonstrations, Highland dancing, and so much more. The main stage will run all day and there will also be a raffle draw with all the proceeds going back to the event.

Finally, there’s the cultural booth. “The cultural booth is mainly a sharing space for different cultural activities," Lim says. "For example the Japanese community will teach people how origami works, and we’ve also got Chinese calligraphy, and Malaysia and Indonesia will have fabrics that are kind of sarongs, which will be a wrap-around skirt tight. It’s bringing different parts of the world to this event and giving people a taste of the country.”

AWE Artist Profile –Jordan Bak

From 7 – 20 October, At the World’s Edge Music Festival will run across Queenstown, Wānaka, Bannockburn and Cromwell. The classical music event is inspired by its roots in the Southern Alps of Aotearoa and offers spectacular sounds against a majestic backdrop. Six programmes of chamber music will be performed across the two weeks.

Last week we highlighted two Wellington artists, Jack Moyer and Otis PrescottMason. Continuing our look at the festival, this week we’re highlighting US-based Jordan Bak, who will play viola. The award-winning Jamaican-American has achieved international acclaim as a trailblazing artist, praised for his radiant stage presence and dynamic interpretations.

“I actually started on the piano, believe it or not, this was before my third birthday,” Bak says. “I was very young and we had one of those Casio keyboards – the very small 61-key keyboards that sits on a stand. My father had a very good ear, but wasn’t trained in that way. He works in heathcare, but he was fiddling away and playing something on the piano, he was good enough to pay on both hands. My instinct was that I can do this better, so I would repeat the same thing on the piano. He was completely astounded, from a parent's perspective, and he enrolled me in piano lessons not long after that.”

Bak continued with piano for five years before starting to play viola once he turned eight, at his New York public school. He initially wanted to play the violin with cello

The biggest feature of the event is set to be the ‘Community One-Inch Unity’ project that will be happening. As you enter, you will be asked to express your unique artistic style within a 1x1 inch art tile. The tiles will be assembled to create a visually-striking mosaic that reflects our communities collaboration and strength, and represents the diversity of participants at the festival.

Lim also wanted to take time to thank all the sponsors of this year’s event, saying without them it wouldn’t be possible. As a non-profit charitable trust in its second year, they’re currently working to raise money for contingency and to be able to continue to run the event. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), Kiwi Kit, Community Organisation Grant Schemes, Community Trust South and Ethnic Communities are a few of those helping to make the festival happen. They’re still accepting new sponsors, so head to their website if you’d like more info.

“Let’s come together and celebrate this unforgettable event. We can make it even more successful and memorable with your effort and support,” Lim says. The event will be disposable plate and cup free, so please take along your water bottle, coffee cup, plates / cutlery or lunch boxes, or hire it through DISHrupt. Please also consider carpooling or travelling by bus to the festival.

as his second choice, but they both got snapped up too quickly in the music class, so he ended up with the viola. At first, he thought it was “a violin with training wheels”, but after hitting his teenage years and joining a programme called the Children’s Orchestra Society, he met his mentor Yo Chang Ma, someone who was very special in his development. Bak then realised his viola wasn’t a fake violin, but rather its own instrument.

“I started to understand that it’s so close to our singing and speaking voices as humans, and it has such a vulnerable quality to it naturally, and it’s also quite an imperfect instrument. It’s just something that I absolutely fell in love with as a teenager and I decided at that point that I was going to pursue it.”

Bak went on to study at the New England Conservatory in Boston, one of the top conservatories in the world. He studied there with Dimitri Murrath, before heading to the Juilliard School in New York City, where he completed his Masters. Since completing his studies, he’s performed in various spots around the world, but this will be his first time in New Zealand. Bak will be included in a number of performances across the programme and is really looking forward to it.

“I’m playing Janáček’s Intimate Letters, and that piece in particular is just amazing to understand the backstory of. Nearly 700 letters were addressed to one woman that Janáček was madly in love with, and to kind of get a sense that he crafted this entire string quartet imagining a life with this woman. When you listen to it, it’s just the imagination that is so unbelievable, but it’s some of the most beautiful music ever written.

“There’s quite a number of different pieces – there’s some Hungarian music, there’s some Czech music, there’s American music – you name it, it’s on the festival,” Bak says.

At the World’s Edge will run from this Saturday. You can find the full programme and read more about what’s on offer, and where, at worldsedgefestival.com

Silverlight Studios granted extension over film park

Silverlight Studios has been granted an extra five years to ‘give effect’ to both its film park and the workers’ accommodation the company plans to build on its 332ha site near Wānaka Airport.

When the film park project was approved in December 2021 under the Covid-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act, decision documents suggested the project would move quickly.

Bulk earthworks could begin in 2022, those documents said, while construction of sound stages, an ‘Italian village’ and a ‘seaside village’ could take place in 2023, with the Paris replica set to be built in 2024.

Two years later, with no signs of construction on-site, Silverlight Studios has secured extensions until March 2029.

The extension applies to both the film park (55ha of development featuring studios, production offices, a film school, a screening theatre, and an exhibition centre) and the 300 residential units for workers’ accommodation. Fast-track consents have a default duration to lapse within two years, but local councils can grant extension periods.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) resource consents manager Fiona Blight said the company had made “substantial progress” on the film park.

The company has completed detailed design work for some of the sound stage buildings and sets and bulk earthworks, prepared environmental management plans for earthworks, liaised with QLDC’s building department and finance department, and undertaken geotechnical investigations, she said.

It has also had discussions with construction companies for the project. The film park could cost as much as $280M to construct. Silverlight Studios was approached for comment.

Southland candidates have their say

Queenstown and New Zealand goes to the polls next week, on Saturday, 14 October, to vote in the 2023 General Election. There are seven candidates standing in the Southland constituency, which includes Queenstown.

In the first of a two-part series, we’ve asked the candidates the simple question: If elected, how would you and your party improve the lives of people in Queenstown?

National party

48 | Senior Lecturer in Software Engineering

Mosgiel

We need to tackle the cost of living. Labour is focused on managing the cost-of-living crisis without fuelling inflation. In Queenstown, people need better infrastructure and access to safe and affordable housing. I will work with Council to improve water quality, continue to improve public transport, and tourism infrastructure. Labour has partnered with the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust and intends to continue to support these partnerships. NZUP provided $115M for dedicated public transport infrastructure, and this investment needs to be continued. Labour supports a tourism levy to allow Queenstown to help fund infrastructure and cover the costs to the community of increased tourism. I will advocate for increasing the value of each tourist, rather than increasing the volume of tourism. Queenstown is spectacular, and we need sustainable tourism with space for locals and visitors.

As an expert in technology and education, I can help to create more educational opportunities in the region, and drive innovation in the agritech industry. I would advocate for increased support for KiwiHarvest and the wonderful people at the Happiness House who are doing great work supporting our community. The quality of a society is measured by how we treat our most vulnerable.

Dave Kennedy Green Party

64 | Not for profit governance (national/local level), Editor Invercargill

I have been listening to Queenstown business owners, councillors and local workers over recent years to appreciate what is needed to help the region thrive sustainably. The cost of living, tourism pressures and climate change are common themes. The Green Party’s tax-free income of $10,000 for all workers, rent increase limits and a commitment to build more social housing where people want to live, will reduce living costs for many. We will introduce a tax system where the wealthiest (0.7%) pay a fairer share of tax to help pay for better services, community projects and tax cuts for struggling households. 62% of Queenstowners feel that tourism levels are negatively impacting on their quality of life. The Green Party will prioritise community well-being and further use tourist levies we initially introduced to help fund regional infrastructure. We are the only party whose policies fully align with Destination Queenstown’s goal of a zero-carbon visitor economy by 2030. The time is now for bold action on climate change and shift to more sustainable agriculture and tourist industries supported by clean energy. A party vote for the Green Party will ensure a better future for our region and most especially our children and grandchildren.

44 | Member of Parliament for Southland

Queenstown

National’s economic plan will boost Queenstown’s local economy while lowering living expenses and improving access to quality education and healthcare. We’ll also offer tax relief, allowing people to retain more of their hard-earned money.

Our infrastructure plan will aim to establish city-regional partnerships with councils to access innovative financing for essential infrastructure. We’ll address housing challenges through revising rental housing regulations, free up land for new housing construction, and support community housing providers.

In healthcare, we’re committed to increasing annual health funding, fund the rebuild of Dunedin hospital to deliver all beds, operating theatres and radiology services that Labour removed, boost frontline health staff, and encourage more nurses and midwives to move to New Zealand to help alleviate health staff shortages. We will also offer training support for nurses and midwives who commit to remain in New Zealand for 5 years after graduation, and fund 13 new cancer treatments. In addition, we’ll train more doctors committed to serving in provincial and rural parts of the country by establishing a third medical school.

National’s plan ensures a brighter future for all Queenstown residents. A strong economy means better job prospects, increased incomes, affordable housing, and reduced living costs

Todd Stephenson

ACT New Zealand

49 | Corporate executive Invercargill

You deserve the rights of an equal citizen, by birth or by choice, entitled to one five millionth of the opportunity this country has to offer, no more and no less. ACT wants to be a part of the next Government to address issues of importance like the cost of living, crime and co-governance. Government spending has increased from $80 billion to $139 billion but public services like health and education haven’t improved. ACT wants to cut wasteful government spending and the number of bureaucrats in Wellington. We’ll lower taxes and remove regulations so you can get ahead. We want you to feel safe in your home and on the streets. ACT will bring back three strikes for serious crimes, ensure youth offenders face consequences, and prioritise the rights of victims. Only ACT is prepared to have an honest conversation on co-governance, and say it is wrong to divide Kiwis by race. We will remove race-based policies and allow everyone to have a say on what the Treaty of Waitangi means in modern New Zealand. We want to ensure every child in this country has the same opportunities.

Please give ACT your Party Vote this election to deliver real change.

Simon McCallum Labour

Aotearoa legalise cannabis party (Alcp)

53 | Disability benefit Invercargill

If elected our party will change the draconian cannabis and hemp laws.

As it stands, our government is stifling the hemp laws in this country, only the seed can be used. We must use the whole plant beneficial to the economy and the environment.

There is no such thing as medicinal cannabis... cannabis is medical and therefore we should all be able to heal ourselves by growing our own. Have you ever asked yourself why the isolates that are used in medical cannabis in NZ aren’t in our country? Changing these laws would be beneficial to Queenstown by growing hemp and legalising cannabis fully with restrictions, for economy, tourism and people’s freedom.

42 | Business Manager and Mother

Lumsden

If elected, Vision NZ and Freedoms NZ will improve the lives in Queenstown and the surrounding areas by representing our people well. Our leaders, candidates, members, our families etc. are hardworking Kiwis who value our freedoms, our country, our Kiwi ways and all that makes us unique as New Zealanders. Our party is committed to standing a new breed of politicians, men and women with life experience who will put people, not policies or ideology, first. Representatives that will take the voice of the people to the decision-making table in parliament and be those representatives who will not compromise their promises to you, the voter.

Our policies focus on solutions and not symptoms of the problems that currently confound our beautiful nation. We believe in getting to the root cause of New Zealand’s social, justice, economic, and commercial problems with back to basics common sense. It is our families that create the state for the next generation, it is the state of our family home that sets the tone for society and the future of our country.

New Zealand Loyal

42 | Sheep and Beef farmer

Mandeville

If elected, NZ Loyal will work with the people of NZ to find solutions to all of the huge issues we currently face as a country. The state broadcaster will be used for this purpose and the Channel One news will become the town hall of New Zealand, where these issues are discussed every evening (with input from the public).

New Zealand children will no longer be subjected to the current gender ideology being pushed on them under the current system and Te Reo or Maori language will be an option - not compulsory, numeracy and literacy will be the main focus.

NZ Loyal will implement our 1% financial transactional tax policy, which will replace the current tax system. No income tax, no GST, no company tax, just a 1% FTT on every transaction. This will leave the middle class New Zealanders with far more of the money they earn left in their pockets, it will create wealth within our communities which will in turn create a strong economy. This will enable NZ to pay off its huge overseas borrowing and return to the great independent nation it once was.

My Life Story

‘HEEL BOYS’

Queenstown’s first female realtor arrives in town

When Steph Drader arrived in Queenstown back in 1985, the local real estate industry was “pretty much a blokes’ reign”, she says. She’d just spent five years learning the ropes with The Professionals, at its Timaru franchise, and came to town to open an office for the company down here, with friend Kay Hobson.

“We became the first two women agents in Queenstown,” Steph says. “We sat on a roll of carpet on our office floor, (where Leonardo’s was), with just a telephone.”

Steph quickly dug her high heels in, drawing the few incumbent males out from behind their desks.

“They sat in their offices like shopkeepers taking orders,” she laughs. “We donned high heels and walked around town meeting people then plucked up courage to go onto building sites. They were overwhelmed, and said, ‘Gee, real estate agents don’t come and see us. We have to go and see them’.” But it was the mid-1980s and that was about to change.

Steph and Kay picked up a lot of listings from those building sites and spent every evening, firstly at O’Connell’s Hotel, then Wicked Willies and The Mountaineer, touting for business.

It was good grounding for a 40-year career in real estate.

Daughter of a Southland-Central Otago farmer, Steph always had a connection to Queenstown Lakes. “Dad brought us here as wee kids, holidaying in the two-storeyed house at the top of Shotover Street,” she says.

When the family moved to Mount Allen Station in Taieri Gorge, she attended Hindon School from age six, riding ponies to school in summer and hitching a ride with the Railways jiggers the rest of the year, sometimes over icy, snowcovered tracks.

Pony Club, ribbons and show days were big when her dad owned Nimrod Downs Station in South Canterbury, but while she loved riding, she wasn’t so proficient at driving - at 15 she hit steel gate pillars delivering the shearers to the house in her dad’s Model T.

“The two guys came through the soft top cab. My first experience with passengers,” she grins.

Boarding school wasn’t for her, and she left at 15, working as a nurse aid at Fairlie Maternity Home then a vet nurse in Timaru before her first marriage, and three kids from age 21.

Single and in Queenstown, there was plenty more of that social ‘touting’. “Office manager Bob Jack was really alarmed once as we’d failed to turn up for work after having dinner with clients at Treetops the night before and ending up at the Glenorchy Pub.” They borrowed towels from the pub and after a quick skinny dip in the lake arrived at work, to a frazzled Bob, at midday. On another occasion after marrying legendary radio host Chas Drader in 1995, the celebration with clients over a freshly, inked contract went awry when Chas, caught up in the excitement, ripped it in half. “We were all horrified as the vendors had yet to finally sign it off. I ended up sellotaping it together and photocopying it.”

Steph’s most challenging sale though would have to be the Frankton Arms Hotel and Accommodation in the late 1990s.

She and Chas had sold up and were in the process of moving to Glenorchy where they built a house, when the record 1999 floods hit. “We did three days commuting down the lake dodging driftwood in our boat as Chas had to get through to the radio station.”

In 2000 the house and boat were sold, replaced with rural land near Glenorchy and a horse and float for Steph, back in her ‘happy place’ saddle.

A radio station was born in their new home when Chas launched Glenorchy Country 89.2FM in 2009, his deep, velvet tones gracing local, and even international, airwaves.

Sadly, he passed away in 2020 and Steph inherited the station, which she moved to a small building out back of a smaller home she’s now built on their land. With help from good mate, technician Dave McLaren, and modern-day technology, Glenorchy Country still rocks on, airing popular local and national programmes.

“I’m not a DJ and I can’t even work the controls. I’m just caretaking Chas’s legacy.”

She’s won her fair share of Glenorchy Flower Show cups though, and still has her real estate licence. “I have a small portfolio of properties that I look after, as well as property management inspections.”

However, her first love now is her horses and

Glenorchy Brew Co win at Brewers Guild Awards

It was a big win for the region’s beers at this year’s Brewers Guild Awards, with small local outfit, Glenorchy Brew Co, picking up four bronze awards. Head brewer Steve Hewland is stoked with the results and hopes to continue to improve the quality of his beers and carry on with the sustainability mission of his brewery.

The Guild is the industry association for brewing in Aotearoa and their vision is that the quality and creativity of our beer is celebrated at home and abroad. The awards happen annually and are held in high esteem worldwide due to the reputation of those involved in judging, organising and staging the event. For NZ, the awards are the Oscars of beer.

Hewland comes from an engineering background and now has five years of commercial brewing under his belt. As the owner and operator of the brewery, his ethos includes continuous development and creating products with as few food miles as possible – in a sustainable way. He just wants to make good beer, and the Brewers Guild Awards has shown that he’s on the right track.

“The thing that was most important to me was to get validation from someone else about my beer quality,” Hewland says. “Your friends and customers will tell you that your beer’s good, but that’s completely different from professional judges reviewing your beer. The opportunity for feedback is the other thing – you get good feedback from it. This is the third year that I’ve entered, and I hadn’t won any awards before, but the feedback I got from them helped me to get to where I am now. I was able to learn from the honest detailed feedback and understand where I was going wrong, and make improvements to the brewing process.”

The beers that picked up the awards were Glacier IPA, Paradise Pilsner, Mountain Ale and Dark Sky Stout, and he just missed out on silver for three of them. Hewland credits part of his beer’s clean, crisp taste is the use of local water – it’s taken straight from a natural aquifer consisting of glacial melt from the surrounding mountains.

Sustainability is a big part of the business too, and nothing goes to waste here. From collection of stormwater for cooling water to solar panels, spent grains getting fed to the chickens, wastewater irrigating the paddocks, using

local malts and hops, and delivery via electric vehicle, Hewland’s always looking at ways to be as green as possible.

Other breweries to win big include Altitude, who snagged several awards including a gold for their Homeward Bound NZIPA, silver for Zen Shiro Sake and their classic Sled Dog Session Hazy, and bronze for their Super Blood Moon Schwarzbier. Otago Brew School gained two bronzes including one for their Brau Schule Kölsch. Rhyme & Reason over in Wānaka also won a number of awards including gold for their Happy Pils, and took home the Beer Tourism Award, celebrating the great job they’re doing in the tourism space.

Hewland’s always looking for feedback, and absorbs knowledge from wherever he can to make the best beer possible.

“My main resources are the internet and podcasts. I use the time driving between Glenorchy and Queenstown to listen to brewing podcasts. It’s a great way to learn – you might listen to someone talking about how they make their particular IPA and invariably there’ll be at least one or two things that you can take away from it that you can use – something that they just drop into the conversation. It might have been the missing link for something you’re trying to figure why something’s done a certain way or what’s the importance of that. Really experienced brewers will share that information and often I’ll write it down.”

His recipes are continually evolving, just as his knowledge does. Hewland is happy to keep the brewery at a manageable size and at a capacity where he can continue to enjoy each and every brew, and pay it the love and time it deserves.

“It’s that challenge to continually improve that keeps me going. I don’t think that will ever stop because there’s so much you can dig into, and so many areas you can become an expert in. It’s just going to be a lifetime of learning,” Hewland says.

You can find Glenorchy Brew Co at various bars and restaurants around town, and in Glenorchy, or head to their website glenorchybrewco.nz to see what all the fuss is about.

Top tips for happiness at work when times are tough

With the international day of happiness in the rear view mirror, a lot of us will be reflecting on how we can inject more positive thinking into our lives, particularly in aspects of our life such as work which often can bring stress and negative emotions. For many, it can be hard to attempt to adopt a positive and happy outlook when we are struggling, particularly at work. Even in the happiest of jobs there will be difficult times and challenges that test our positivity. There are three small changes you can make to try and adopt a more positive outlook to maximise happiness at work.

1. Don’t buy into the ‘fake it till you make it’ myth

Often it can be hard to admit we are struggling, feeling unhappy or insecure. Particularly when it comes to work. It can be tempting to try the ‘fake it till you make it’ tactic and imitate confidence and optimism so that those around us don’t see we are finding things tough. This kind of toxic positivity prevents us from addressing the issues we are struggling with.

Making ourselves happier or more confident when we are struggling is not about affirmations or willpower; we need to change at a neurological and cellular level. We can only do this through accepting what we are feeling and then addressing these feelings appropriately.

If you are feeling under a huge amount of pressure and are not managing your workload, pretending to be coping with it is not helpful for you or your wider team, so being candid and seeking support from a manager is important. Removing the shame away from admitting your real feelings will help stop any negative thoughts spiraling out of control through hiding them and trying to deal with them alone.

2. Address and challenge self limiting beliefs

Often the thoughts and beliefs that make us unhappy don’t come from those around us, but from ourselves.

The unconscious mind’s job is to support our beliefs, whatever they might be. When a belief is installed, which is often by the age of five or six, the unconscious mind doesn’t evaluate it. It accepts that it’s true then goes about looking for evidence to support that belief. The unconscious mind is exceptionally good at finding evidence to reinforce these beliefs, whatever our belief happens to be.

If you believe that you’re hopeless at maths, you’ll only notice the times when you make mistakes, calculate the wrong change in a shop etc. All the times that your maths calculations work perfectly well, will go completely unnoticed. These thoughts are instilled as children but stay with us for all our lives, and will influence our experiences in the workplace if not addressed.

A good place to start when addressing this in the workplace is to try to write a list of the words your colleagues would use to describe you, and the positive comments you have received for pieces of work, your attitude, or the way you make those around you feel in the workplace. Although it may be hard at first, you will begin to think of the way others see you and what they appreciate you for.

3. Focus on what you want rather than worrying about what you don’t want

Humans have around 64,800 thoughts a day and it is estimated that on average 80% of those are negative. This means that most of the time we are focusing our energy on worrying about what we don’t want, and this has a huge impact on the reality that shows up in our life.

Our neurology cannot tell the difference between a real experience and a vividly imagined one – so our brain reacts to both just the same. When we spend time worrying about the future and creating imagined scenarios our emotional response feels real because our brain can’t tell the difference. For example, worrying about people’s reactions to your comments in a meeting and what they might be saying about you can allow the brain to create a story that is not real, but that you believe.

Instead, try to focus on using this same strategy of imagined scenarios to create confidence in yourself. Instead of worrying about the potential negative outcomes, try to visualise the ideal outcome you want and how good this will feel. Imagine pitching a winning idea in a meeting and your manager being thrilled with your performance. Picture how this outcome would feel and how you would celebrate, then use this to motivate and empower you to be confident and pursue the things you want out of work.

Although finding happiness in challenging times can be hard, being kind to yourself and taking a step back to look into your thought patterns and behaviours can have valuable outcomes that encourage positivity.
