Locals helping locals

When I joined KiwiHarvest, less than a year ago, I thought it would be the scale of the food waste that would shock me, but it was actually the need for food support and the unsung army of people and charities helping people in their hour of need that really left me stunned. Every week over 760 people across Queenstown, Wānaka and Cromwell get food support.

Simply put, even in the best of times many people, across a huge range of occupations vital to the community, are financially stretched. They have little in reserve for when things go wrong, and don’t have the family and closefriend network to provide support. This Winter is looking like a perfect storm of financial strains. On top of food price rises and heating bills kicking in, you have average rents in the area jumping $140 a week. It is even more grim for a big number of families coming off their fixed mortgage rates with some jumping up $415 a week! Many people will do what they can to keep a roof over their head and the heating on, so food, and especially nutritious food, is being sacrificed.

Hearing stories, as I have, of mums breaking down because they can’t give their kids the nutrition they need, or having a horrible scenario of pulling their children out of school and away from their friends to move out of town, is something no one in our community wants. We are trying to do our bit and have created a dedicated Winter Food Campaign.

I would say to anyone struggling to put food on the table for themselves or their family, even if it’s just for a couple of weeks, you are not alone, these are extraordinary times and there is good help out there for you. The charities are run by amazing people who keep things discreet and are just there to help people in their time of need, so please check the listings below and reach out. Last year our small team, in partnership with our great food donors including supermarkets, producers and cafés, rescued over 120,000 kilograms of excess food, equating to over 340,000 meals, that we redistributed to our partner charities. With this campaign we are asking for locals’ support, in whatever way you can as we ramp up supplies and capabilities for winter. Details on how to make a financial donation, food donations and volunteer can all be found on our Winter Campaign page www.kiwiharvest.org.nz/ central-lakes-winter-campaign.

Budd’s lasting legacy

Tourists will be encouraged to take their time exploring the south through a new sustainable tourism campaign, originally conceived by much-loved former Destination Queenstown boss, the late Graham Budd.

The Southern Way website was launched earlier this month, showcasing the touring network across the eight southern regions, and designed to inform and inspire visitors to slow down, explore further, stay longer and ultimately return.

It is a collaboration between the eight southern regional tourism organisations to collectively celebrate and share more about the depth and breadth of visitor experiences in the lower south of New Zealand.

Mark Frood, General Manager Tourism and Events at Great South, says the concept was initiated by Budd, former DQ and Great South CEO, back in 2018, having had a long-held wish for regions to work more closely together.

“It is a proud day for our combined regions to see Graham’s wishes come to life through this project,” Frood says.

The website features places of interest, suggested itineraries and a wideranging set of world class experiences across Waitaki, Wānaka, Queenstown, Central Otago, Dunedin, Clutha, Southland, and Fiordland.

“Visitors don’t see local boundaries and encouraging people to move around between our regions, travel slowly, engage with our communities and explore further is another step towards our collective goal of welcoming a high-contributing and more sustainable visitor market” says DQ’s marketing director Sarah O’Donnell.

Each RTO has now created their own destination management plans outlining priorities and wishes for the future of tourism in their place.

These plans now form the basis for how RTOs are working, with a transition from purely traditional destination marketing to also embracing the role of managing their destinations in line with community aspirations.

“Helping visitors to understand the value of taking time to explore this spectacular southern corner of New Zealand more deeply ensures that we are supporting a more sustainable future for tourism in the south,” Frood adds.

Funding for the development of the Southern Way collaboration was supported by MBIE through Covid recovery funding with the project managed under the leadership of Great South, Southland Regional Development Agency.

“We were tasked with taking a new approach towards inspiring visitors’ travel patterns and it is exciting to see this project finally come to life. We are proud to bring our regions together to offer truly awe-inspiring experiences for our visitors,” Frood said.

Queenstown’s record turnout at International Tourism Trade Show TRENZ

NZ’s biggest international tourism trade show was back for the first time in four years last week (May 9 – 11) with Queenstown operators turning out in record numbers to show off the latest resort offers to hundreds of travel market buyers from around the world.

Some 1500 delegates attended the event held at Christchurch’s Te Pai Convention Centre – buyers and sellers making up about 650 of those. It’s the first time the industry’s most important trade event has been held since 2019, with the May 2020 TRENZ event having to be cancelled because of Covid restrictions.

More than 300 NZ tourism businesses showcased their products and services to more than 330 high quality international buyers from 25 markets at what has been the country’s greatest tourism trade event for decades.

TRENZ is expected to have generated $174 of economic impact a minute during four days, with ongoing benefits to Christchurch and New Zealand’s tourism industry.

A total of 31 Queenstown operators were represented last week – one of the largest ever turn-outs for a TRENZ show, says Destination Queenstown Chief Executive Mat Woods.

The Queenstown contingent totalled about 80 delegates in all and Mat says Queenstown was “an incredibly popular district” with buyers wanting to bring visitors to NZ. “Queenstown looked very strong.”

Buyers from around the world were keen to check out Queenstown’s latest offerings, many from Australia, the US, and a good contingent from China, the UK and Europe.

Queenstown was ahead of the game with its strong sustainability initiatives and Mat says they were able to share a lot around Queenstown’s Destination Management Plan. “Sustainability is massive globally and Queenstown’s Carbon Zero 2030 really intrigued overseas buyers,” he says. The resort’s strong sustainability message was a stand-out plus, particularly with Real NZ’s moves towards decarbonisation of the TSS Earnslaw and Ngai Tahu’s world-leading prototype electric Shotover Jet boat plans. Air NZ’s move to introduce electric flights on its regional NZ routes was also a huge drawcard, says Mat.

“Guests are interested to come here and see what we’re doing and learn,” says Mat. Innovators looking at teaching others about sustainability also showed interest in coming to test out their prototypes, and on a different note there’s a real market to bring incentive business events to Queenstown to learn about its sustainability advances and initiatives, he says.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa, which organised TRENZ, made a big focus on sustainability by doing away with the grandiose sales booths and instead opting for a standard booth only, featuring a product image on the back of the booth in recyclable material.

“There’s been an amazing vibe as it’s the first time in four years that we’ve all had to reconnect in the industry,” says Mat. “It’s been huge, meeting old friends and new colleagues.”

It was also 17 years since Christchurch had hosted a TRENZ event with the 2020 event due to have been held in the city.

The Te Pai Convention Centre has been a magnificent host facility and Christchurch has really welcomed TRENZ with a wonderful spirit and energy in the city now, 11 years on from the devastating earthquakes, says Mat. Thousands of appointments have been held between tourism operators and high-quality international buyers and TIA Chief Executive Rebecca Ingram says the business that’s taken place this week will boost the industry and New Zealand economy over the coming years. “We’ve had some great discussions and tourism in Aotearoa New Zealand has a very bright future,” she says. Rebecca shared some top-level information with industry leaders at the TIA Tourism Symposium during TRENZ, saying the tourism industry was part way through an ambitious project to reimagine its future. Initial thinking suggested focuses on reducing tourism’s carbon footprint, supporting industry prosperity, including in the workforce, embedding Te Ao Maori, introducing new funding mechanisms and enhancing innovation, technology, data and research.

The event wound up last Thursday (May 11) with a farewell function showcasing some of Canterbury’s best food and beverages, and performances from local artists.

While the Queenstown crew were all excited to see images of the huge snow dump cooling the ground on Thursday in what’s anticipated to be a very busy winter, Mat says it was even more exciting to see the huge shift towards tourism sustainability.

There’s been a lot of emphasis in NZ on attracting high value visitors, but Mat says Queenstown’s focus is more on high contributing visitors. “They stay longer, take the time to become a temporary local, getting to know and appreciate our people and place, forging connections and giving back to the Queenstown region.”

DOC visit to see the incredible mahi

Takahē could once again be roaming in the Rees Valley in Queenstown Lakes before the end of next year.

The flightless bird is a conservation icon in New Zealand, having been incorrectly labelled extinct three times.

Their potential return to the Rees catchment, with a potential release planned for late 2024, is being made possible by the work of the Southern Lakes Sanctuary.

The landscape scale conservation project brings together six founding partners and 87 volunteer community groups, focused on predator trapping and monitoring.

Earlier this month, Department of Conservation Director General Penny Nelson, her deputy Mike Tully and DOC South Island operation director Aaron Fleming visited to learn more about the ambitious mahi (work) being done in the region.

They were joined by staff from the Southern Lakes Sanctuary (SLS), along with Mark and Amanda Hasselman, of Temple Peak Station, and Kate and Iris Scott, of Rees Valley Station.

“We took them up to the Rees Valley because it’s a beautiful story up there about what is possible through collaboration,” SLS project director Paul Kavanagh says.

“We’ve got community groups, such as the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust, and landowners up there, high country farmers, who are just so engaged and really want to do what’s best for the biodiversity and the whenua (land).

“We wanted to showcase some of our mahi up there are show what’s possible, because we’re in really serious discussions about a potential Takahē release in the Rees Valley in August 2024.

“This is all possible from the hard work of predominantly volunteers on the ground, our team providing cohesion, and the landowners, who have been doing amazing conservations practices for generations and care about every bit of the land.”

DOC plans to release up to 60 Takahē into the Greenstone Valley later this year, supported SLS.

“The Rees is a much bigger site but we’ve got a bit of work to do before a release, a huge number of trap installations.”

There are now about 10,500 traps throughout Queenstown Lakes, up from around 6400 in 2017.

DOC, as a Jobs for Nature/ Mahi mō te Taiao funder of the Southern Lakes Sanctuary, is a key partner in Southern Lakes conservation work.

Kavanagh says that funding for the team of 20 runs until June 2024.

“The Takahē release would fall outside our current funding steam, so we’re working really hard to secure long term funding.

“We’ve come a long, long way, but those gains will be quickly lost if our work doesn’t continue. Our staff are incredible, a lot of them have Masters degrees, they’re really experienced and passionate, so we want to ensure they have security in their jobs.”

NASA balloon crashed into ocean

NASA has crashed its second super pressure balloon (SPB) into the Pacific Ocean after it developed a leak

The SPB, carrying the Extreme Universe Space Observatory 2 (EUSO-2) payload, was successfully launched from Wānaka Airport at noon on Saturday. But during the day-long flight, the SPB began experiencing a leak and attempts to troubleshot the problem by dropping ballast to maintain the balloon’s altitude failed.

The determination was made to safely terminate over the Pacific Ocean. NASA will investigate the cause of the anomaly.

“This is an unfortunate end to the mission and we will investigate the cause to help us continue to improve the super pressure balloon technology,” Debbie Fairbrother, NASA’s Scientific Balloon Program chief, says.

NASA conducted a thorough environmental analysis of an open-ocean landing before beginning its mid-latitude flight program in 2015.

The open-ocean flight termination procedure makes use of the two-ton flight payload as an anchor to pull the entire balloon flight train to the bottom of the ocean as quickly as possible.

In this way, the balloon does not remain in the primary water column zone where most marine species are known to live, minimizing environmental impacts.

The first super pressure balloon carrying SuperBIT continues to perform nominally on its fourth revolution of the Southern Hemisphere. That mission launched on Sunday, April 16, and has already completed three revolutions about the Earth’s southern hemisphere flying at about 108,000 feet.

The 18.8-million-cubic-foot (532,000-cubic-meter) balloons are heliumfilled and about the size of a rugby stadium, when fully inflated at operational float altitude.

The balloons’ flight path is controlled by the wind speed and direction at float altitude, spend most of their time over water

The EUSO-2 on balloon two was set to detect ultra-high energy cosmicray particles from beyond our galaxy as they penetrate Earth’s atmosphere, helping to solve the mystery of their origin. The goal of the mission was also to test and qualify the SPB technology for flight.

My Life Story

GRANT JACKSON A Culinary King

He may be driving the local school bus and tour coaches these days, but acclaimed Queenstown chef Grant Jackson has cooked for dignitaries like former US President Bill Clinton, and trained some of NZ’s best chef exports. Renowned as an inspiration and mentor to many, he’s always had a heart for helping young chefs get into the trade, passing on the international expertise he gleaned from top chefs as a youngster.

Born and bred in Timaru, second of four boys, Grant’s parents owned a Milk Bar-Tearooms, instilling a strong work ethic in him. “They worked long hours and we did a lot of dishes and cleared a lot of tables for pocket money,” says Grant. “That’s where my original passion for cooking came from, serving milkshakes and rolling ice creams.”

A talented South Canterbury rep cricketer, he soon had to choose, giving up cricket at 15 to devote the necessary hours to his chef’s apprenticeship under French chef Claude Baudet. “He took us to a different level.”

Grant studied for his City & Guilds qualifications part-time in Dunedin, starting on the bottom rung at Trailways in Timaru, making appetisers and peeling spuds. “Claude taught me a passion for cooking, what the customer wants, and respect for food, whether I was grilling sausages for breakfast or making Crayfish Mornay. We did the classics and did it well.”

It worked. Grant won Otago Polytech’s Elms Award for top of his year in 1976 and Canterbury Apprentice of the Year in 1977.

During several years travel based in England the elderly directors of Kodak in London, for whom money was no issue, bought him off the chef temping agency to be their head boardroom chef, impressed with his temp offerings. He also worked for a high-end pub in Covent Garden saving 500 pound to buy a VW Kombi, travelling all over Europe in his time off. “I was 20 – young and free.”

Back home Grant met wife Del in his first NZ head chef’s role at The Golden Shears in Masterton. It had its moments, like the day his apprentice forgot to turn the beef on for a wedding. “I was a wee bit miffed.”

He wasn’t always the boss. Years later as father help on a Queenstown Primary School Stewart Island camp Grant got in big trouble with the teacher for changing her menu, crispy frying instead of poaching fresh blue cod - a hit with the kids.

After competing at the World Club Softball Championships in California and more travel, Grant worked at O’Connell’s Hotel in Queenstown then Travelodge, as interim head chef, already earning a reputation. General manager Nigel Harper soon headhunted him for Auckland Airport Travelodge – where he was second in command of 35 chefs. Grant continued climbing to executive chef of Pahia’s luxury Kahn Resort.

He and Del then bought the Panmure Bakehouse in Auckland just weeks before the sharemarket crashed. “Our business loan was 12.5 percent and six weeks later we were paying 22 percent. I worked up to 110 hours a week –midnight until 6pm.”

Other North Island posts followed, including Killarney Street Brasserie, before former Queenstown Travelodge mate and Minami restaurateur Tony Robertson, asked Grant to be head chef-partner at Boardwalk Restaurant in 1994. “We said we wanted to be the best restaurant in Queenstown in five years. I reckon we did it in half that.” Grant was on the phone at 6am daily working his Auckland contacts to serve 11 fresh fish species nightly.

In 1999 during APEC Grant had an hour’s notice he’d be serving US President Bill Clinton and his table of 12. “Within two minutes we were inundated with big security guys talking into their hands,” he says. “We didn’t realise they’d been checking us out for weeks. I’d taken the phone booking for ‘White’ six weeks prior from an Englishman.” A security desk with a satellite dish was set up in their office. “It was a normal night. Kim Wilkinson was there for a staff birthday party, and other locals. We just had to carry on. There were another 125 people paying just the same.”

Bill strolled among the guests, happily posing for photos, The White House later sending copies for guests, including Grant’s delighted 11 and 13-year-old daughters Keeley and Gemma.

US golf legend Greg Norman, just landed on his private jet, had to be turned away once as Boardwalk was full, locals just as important as fame.

Grant reached his own version of culinary royalty in the early 2000s. He was Chief Judge of the World Junior Chef’s Challenge and, as national vice president of the NZ Chef’s Association, was a key organiser of the World Association of Chef’s Society World Congress in Auckland. A WACS vice president for Asia Pacific, he’s attended forums in China, Korea and Mauritius, and helped bring key culinary greats to NZ to train our tutors. “You’ve got to give back to the industry,” he says.

From left, Grant, Gemma, US President Bill Clinton, Keeley, and Tony Robertson, the night President Clinton dined at Boardwalk in 1999. Famous Grant Jackson sausage rolls - Grant and granddaughter Evie Noyer whip up his specialty.

Sustainable from birth

A bright idea backed by a $2000 grant is saving an estimated 8760 disposable nappies from landfill each year.

The Glenorchy Reusable Nappy Back has a dozen nappy packs out in the community, each containing 20 washable nappies.

That helps mums and dads make a sustainable choice, without breaking the bank, diverting around a tonne of waste from Queenstown’s Victoria Flats dump.

Co-ordinator Michelle Green says: “When I had my second son, we bought new reusable nappies, because they were both in diapers, but it was really expensive.

“And I thought it would just be a shame if people didn’t do it because of the cost, and could we, as a small community, have a communal hub.” After a fundraising quiz night, four packs of 20 were purchased and the scheme began. Then, last year, Green applied for funding through Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Waste Minimisation Community Fund, and bought another eight packs.

“It was really, really easy. They basically said ‘this is a good idea; we’ll talk you through it if you find it hard’. So, anyone with a good idea should go for it.”

A funding pool of $50,000 is available for community projects that encourage enduring change in behaviours. And up to $10,000 for commercial waste minimisation or resource recovery projects.

Applications for the fund close this, Friday, 19 May. Details are on the QLDC website.

The washable nappies will be rotated around the community for years to come and replaced as needed.

“It’s been really fun meeting all the new families and babies,” Green says. “They’re put in contact with me, and I take them a nappy pack, and often stay for a cup of tea, and get to know them.

“We’ve also started sending out welcome baskets for new-borns, so we’ll put a reusable nappy in there and some information about getting involved.”

As well as reducing waste, the reusable nappies are also saving families money, as costs spiral. And the scheme has been such as success, it has already inspired other Queenstown Lakes’ communities to set up their own nappy banks.

New chair for Wānaka Airport Liaison Committee

Rob Phillips has been appointed the independent chair of the newlyformed Wānaka Airport Liaison Committee.

Phillips, the former chief executive of Environment Southland, will lead the committee as it bridges the gap between the Wānaka public, Queenstown Lakes District Council and Queenstown Airport Corporation.

QLDC was taken to the High Court in 2021 by lobby group Wanaka Stakeholders Group, after granting a 100-year lease for Wānaka Airport to Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC).

That was judged to be unlawful, because QLDC didn’t properly consult with ratepayers, and terminated. QAC now manages the airport’s day-to-day operations on behalf of the council.

The liaison committee’s responsibilities include assisting QLDC (in its role as regulator) and QAC to communicate and engage with the community, reviewing complaints relating to airport operations or noise, and reviewing progress on any airport development activity.

QLDC boss Mike Theelen says Phillips, who has 22 years’ experience in leadership roles, “clearly demonstrated through the recruitment process that he’ll bring the skills, experience and independence required”.

“His strategic approach, open leadership style and focus on achieving outcomes and recognising the importance of a strong organisational culture will enable him to chair the committee and deliver on its key responsibilities.”

The committee is a requirement of the District Plan.

Phillips says he is looking forward to working with airport-based businesses and the wider community.

“Wānaka Airport plays a wide range of roles including that of a hugelyrespected flight training centre and the home of internationally famous air show, Warbirds over Wānaka,” he says.

“The committee will be an important new body taking a helicopter view of relevant activities there.”

Wānaka Youth and Community Centre on track

Wānaka’s new Youth and Community Centre is nearing completion and set to open at the end of July. The centre will include two multi-use indoor courts, a separate studio (which could be used for dance or various classes), and dedicated areas for Kahu Youth and Aspiring Gymsports. Work to transform the old Mitre 10 building has been ongoing and a 10year lease with additional rights to renew commenced on 1 May 2022.

The centre is a welcome addition for sports and community groups in the area, many of whom have reported needing new facilities in the coming years. It will alleviate stress for Aspiring Gymsports and Kahu Youth, giving them a permanent home – Aspiring Gymsports have been lobbying the council to provide an appropriate venue for its growing club, and Kahu Youth have said that they outgrew their current building a couple of years ago.

The total budget for the project is approximately $4.2 million, which is an increase of $90,000 on the initial budget approved due to additional fire protection measures. The council estimates the centre will generate close to $375k annually for programmes and venue hire.

Back in May of 2022, the council opened up an expression of interest from any local groups that required new or additional space for their activities – the form has now officially closed. The purpose of the form was to ensure they captured the needs of a broad range of groups that would want to use the facility and assess how to accommodate demand. Priority was given to not-for-profit groups.

Gabriela Flessak is the Wānaka Facility Coordinator at Queenstown Lakes District Council and has reported that a lot of progress has been made on the building in a short period of time.

“I had a sneak peek inside last week and it’s exciting to see it taking shape,” says Gabriela. “Some internal features are now also taking shape with framing in place for the studio and Kahu Youth spaces. Floors have been polished; walls have been repaired and painted.”

The council are thrilled to have the project underway. Everyone is really looking forward to the facility opening up for community use.

“The project represents an important investment for the Upper Clutha community to help meet demand now and over the coming years. The centre will complement the Wānaka Recreation Centre by offering additional bookable indoor court and activity space while providing dedicated space for Aspiring Gymsports and Kahu Youth. This flexible, multi-purpose facility will provide space to accommodate several different sports clubs, groups and community organisations. It will also provide opportunities for the development of new programmes.

“From early stages of identifying a community need to where we are today, major milestones have been achieved. Project scoping, engagement with local sports and community groups, concept designs, planning, funding, procurement and construction tender are some of the many steps and stages involved in a project of this nature,” says Gabriela.

Queenstown camping grounds to be leased to Australian company

There are concerns the sale of leases for five Queenstown Lakes camping grounds to an Australian group may spell the end to the Kiwi camping experience at the sites.

But the Queenstown Lakes District Council says it intends to retain ownership of the land, and campers will continue to enjoy the places they love.

Doug Fraser had been camping at Glendhu Bay Motor Camp, just outside of Wānaka, with his family since the late 1940s.

It meant a lot to him and his whānau.

“It’s very near and dear,” Fraser told RNZ. “The grandkids talk about coming down for six months of the year, so the parents couldn’t go for a holiday anywhere else because the kids demand that they come back to Glendhu Bay.”

So, when he heard rumours while camping there at Christmas that it was potentially going to be sold to Australian company Hampshire Property Group, he had concerns - especially in light of the council’s 2021 camping strategy.

“It seemed to be more focused on what financial returns they could get out of the camps rather than maintaining the Kiwi camping experience.

“They talk about joint ventures with private capital and changing to different camping systems, so is that code for building chalets on the camp sites that we’ve been camping on for many years? There’s a certain nervousness about that.”

Those concerns were echoed by other Glendhu Bay campers, who did not want to see the ownership of the leases go offshore.

“Not necessarily just Australia, but any overseas entity. I think it will just take away the Kiwiness of camping there,” one woman, who did not want to be identified, told RNZ.

“To see it sold off to an overseas entity wouldn’t be good,” a Wānaka resident said.

“It becomes more corporate and with that you’ve got a whole corporate structure to pay for and the only way to pay for it is to put their prices up,” another camper said.

Their concerns centred around the loss of the “Kiwi camping experience”, increased costs to campers, and changes to what they had come to expect at the site.

Glendhu Bay was leased under a single arrangement alongside the Albert Town, Arrowtown, Queenstown and Wānaka holiday parks.

In nearby Cromwell, the holiday park had been sold off and turned into a subdivision filled with houses.

That was another concern of the campers.

But the five Queenstown Lakes camp sites were owned by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

They had been leased and managed by two local couples for years, but the death of one of the owners had sparked the need for change.

The owners and prospective purchasers did not wish to comment while the application was before the Overseas Investment Office.

Bruce Miller, who had also been camping at Glendhu Bay since he was an infant, said as long as the current culture of the site was maintained, he was comfortable with new ownership.

“Really, as long as there are appropriate constraints on what new owners may or may not do - particularly as they’re not New Zealanders and may not necessarily fully appreciate the New Zealand camping culture - that would be the main thing I’d be looking for,” Miller said. But he appreciated such constraints were easier said than done.

“It’s not a straight-forward challenge for them because it’s one thing to say ‘no change’ but on

the other hand people do like to know there are going to be improvements and there always have been. The native planting around the camp would be an example of that.”

The Overseas Investment Office said it received the application regarding the sale of the camp site leases in late October.

It would not release the application until after its decision was made and would not confirm Hampshire Property Group was the proposed purchaser.

“The application is currently being assessed,” the OIO said.

“We have received 13 submissions on this application. A decision is expected on this application in May/June 2023.

“Consents granted under the benefit to New Zealand pathway are subject to standard conditions and special conditions that are specific to the investment.”

The Queenstown Lakes District Council said it would not be selling the land and retained some control over how the lease operated.

“The lease in question allows the leaseholder to operate a campground on the lease’s sites. Council has an approval role for any capital investment in new infrastructure by the leaseholder, and any proposed changes to the fees and charges onsite,” the council said.

“QLDC does not have any input on the prospective owner. The current leaseholder is allowed to assign the lease to another company. However, council does have some ability to conduct due diligence over the new leaseholder and to ensure the company is in a financially stable position to take on the lease.

The council said it had no made a formal submission to the OIO.

Wānaka edition of Monopoly on the way

Wānaka is set to be immortalised in a special edition of the world-famous Monopoly board game later this year.

Well-known Wānaka landmarks and beloved community destinations will feature on the board, while businesses and organisations can purchase coveted spaces and pieces.

The initiative is the brainchild of the Wānaka Business Chamber, which is working in partnership with Winning Moves – a licensed Hasbro provider and Monopoly manufacturer based in Australia – to create the bespoke board.

Chamber GM Glenn Peat says: “Monopoly is a board game played in more than 114 countries and 47 languages – with many local and international travellers visiting our area and looking for a holiday keepsake, it feels only fitting to have a Wānaka edition.”

Demand is expected to be high, and businesses are encouraged to secure their place on the board as soon as possible to avoid missing out. Some spots will be reserved to be sold at a special auction event held by the Chamber at Edgewater Resort on May 25.

“We have an array of incredible businesses here, and this allows us to create something that supports the local community as well,” Peat says. Design and production of the board games begins in June.

The Chamber is reserving two spots on the board to be gifted to important community assets, Wānaka Wastebusters and the Wānaka Community Hub. A portion of the Wānaka Monopoly board sales will also be donated to Food For Love.

Chamber board chair Jo Learmonth says the Monopoly project has involved months of planning by board members and the executive team.

“Revenue made from sponsorship and from board game purchases will be used to allow the Chamber to continue to offer important training, education and advocacy to strengthen our local business community,” she says.

“It’s exciting to reach this milestone and eventually see Wānaka Monopoly come to life.”

Winning Moves Australia & NZ Monopoly manager Dale Hackett says every edition is different, as every location has its own community and character.

“We have released a total of four editions in New Zealand, including Auckland, Wellington, Southland and Palmerston North,” he says. “Wānaka itself is such an amazingly beautiful area, and I have no doubt this edition will certainly showcase that.”

The Monopoly Wānaka edition will be sold through the Wānaka Business Chamber, with board pre-sales open from August and boards available from November.

The original Monopoly board game was released in 1935. Since then, it has been played by over 1 billion people and translated into 47 different languages

David Vass wins Mountain Book of the Year Prize

David Vass is one of Aotearoa’s leading mountaineers and has just been named as the recipient of the Nankervis/Bamford NZ Mountain Book of the Year for 2023 for his book Not Set in Stone. The book tells David’s own story from a life of adventure and working as a mountaineer guide.

David’s life has been one filled with expeditions, which he delves into in the book including establishing numerous first ascents and descents in the country’s hills and canyons. He also talks about his accident in 2015, which resulted in a broken neck and incomplete tetraplegia, which forced a change of direction in his life. The accident took place in Fiordland – David fell and landed on his head, breaking his neck when a tree root broke underneath his foot and he fell down a bank. During recovery he dealt with a lot of frustration and hopelessness, but channelled his energy into completing a Masters in Creative Writing. After this came the book, which was in part a way for David to remember all he had done. He has some great memories from the mountains, but says there’s something really special about New Zealand’s mountains and exploring close to home, “they make home a bigger place,” says David.

“I’ve just written something along the lines of what it’s like and how it felt – or how it felt to me, anyway – to have a life in the mountains, and what it’s like to have that change. I’ve just written it really from my point of view. Very much keeping it as simple as what it’s been like for me.”

The Nankervis/Bamford award is named after mountaineers John Nankervis and Dave Bamford – David knew John and knows Dave, which made the win a little more sentimental. David has also just recently moved out of Wānaka up to Christchurch, and says the award makes for a truly great farewell present.

“I’ve been much humbled and gratified by the feedback I’ve received so far — it seems to have moved people in a similar way to how I felt writing it — the highs and the lows…. And, if I think about it, to be awarded the Nankervis/Bamford feels somehow fitting, now that I’ve finally become an armchair mountaineer myself!”

David will be speaking at the NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival in Wānaka on Tuesday 27 June alongside Robbie Burton, whose book Bushline – A Memoir was highly commended by the competition judges. David hasn’t quite finished pulling together his talk for the event but wants to go over the impact we’re all having on the mountains.

“As I wrote the book I realised more about my relationship with the mountains and my relationship with nature. I think I’m quite keen to talk about how we, as outdoor people, relate to nature. In

Winter Games NZ Secures Five-Year

Queenstown and Wānaka you’re surrounded by it and people are out there all the time but we have an impact on it as well. A lot of us make a living from it and it all gets quite complicated, but we definitely do have an impact.

“We’re the ones who reap the greatest benefits from the outdoors, by being amongst it and realising how amazing it is, and filling up our lives with it, but actually it would be quite good to think a bit harder about more things that we could do to look after it,” says David.

Not Set in Stone is available at various book stores around New Zealand. This year’s programme for the NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival and individual event tickets will be released on 23 May. Festival passes for Wanaka and Queenstown are now available for purchase now at mountainfilm.nz/tickets/

The Winter Games NZ has secured a five-year funding commitment from New Zealand Major Events. They will support the event, which is the largest annual snow sport event in the Southern Hemisphere, through to 2027. This year they’ll be hosting 14 events across alpine, freeride and freestyle. The games attract 500-600 athletes and also generate international media coverage. Events take place across Cardrona, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. Cardrona will also host the International Obsidian Challenge. This consists of teams made up of the best freeski and snowboard athletes representing Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America. Each team will battle it out for bragging rights across custom-built terrain park venues and freeride terrain. It will all take place between 25 August and 8 September.

The Sources of a Future Taiwan Crisis

Today’s decision-makers in the People’s Republic of China, the United States, and on Taiwan have different definitions of the cross-strait status quo and different assessments of the interests at stake.

As a result, says Harvard University Professor of China in World Affairs, Alastair Iain Johnston, the probability of military conflict appears to be rising, though it is unclear by how much and how fast.

What are the sources and effects of these competing definitions of the status quo and conflicting visions for the future of Taiwan?

His Catalyst discussion comes at a time of rising rhetoric on both sides of the US–China power plays in the Indo-Pacific, with AUKUS and Australia’s recent decision to build long-range missile capacity adding regional heat. He is happy to talk on this broader context during Q&A. Registration required online at Eventbrite.

Simon Clark: 110 Pounds of Honey (2023)

What makes a national identity? What, in particular, gives the inhabitants of a country sentimental feelings and nostalgia for their country’s past? These are central questions posed by the art of Simon Clark.

In Clark’s paintings see mid-twentieth century items which tug on the memory as Kiwiana. While on the surface, cheap, second-hand, kitsch and rusted, disposable containers are raised in our memories into taonga with the mana of ancient classical artefacts. Surrounding these items is a profusion of natural beauty — flowers, birds, and greenery speak to our ideas of New Zealand as a second Garden of Eden.

Learn about the innovative thinking that went into setting up the orchard, while there will be open about the challenges and costs involved in creating a zero fossil fuel orchard. There may also be a discussion about the NZ0 certification, and the important role of NZ0 in engaging consumers and raising awareness about the methods used in operating such an orchard, and selling direct to consumer, export grade cherries. COMMUNITY NOTES

Jump For Cancer – Make A Difference

The Cancer Society invites courageous people to ‘Jump for Cancer’ to support the 1 in 3 people impacted by cancer. The skydive fundraiser will happen at Skydive Wanaka on Saturday, 27 May and at NZONE Skydive Queenstown on Sunday, 28 May where Cancer Society staff will be cheering on the brave jumpers. Skydivers can also arrange another time in May if these jump days do not suit.

Cancer Society Otago and Southland chief executive Rachael Hart “encourages people to ‘Jump For Cancer’ after she faced her fear of heights and jumped out of a plane this year to acknowledge people struggling with cancer who don’t get to choose their situation.”

This ultimate adrenaline fundraiser will offer an unforgettable experience. Fundraisers who raise a minimum of $1,000 will get to take the plunge for free. The money raised will support people with cancer and programmes to help prevent cancer.

You can sign up as a team, such as a workplace or an individual. Regardless, each person must raise $1000 or more to qualify for a free jump. The Cancer Society has witnessed so much pain and anxiety watching patients go through their cancer journey. They would like to challenge businesses and individuals to take the plunge so we can all make a difference. The Cancer Society challenges people to sign up, raise money, and jump for free.

Sustainable Queenstown - Green Drinks

Local charity, Sustainable Queenstown, has announced this month’s Green Drinks event. It’s all about Healthy Homes That Don’t Cost The Earth.

The month’s event will focus on simple and affordable ways to make a standard Queenstown house more energy efficient, warmer, and healthier to live in – what will our experts suggest is the best bang for buck if you have $5k or $10k to do this?

“We’ve got some of the best people in the biz to talk to us about what we can do in our home to make it a healthier place to live AND keep those energy bills down (hello winter in Queenstown!)” said Jess Larmont from Sustainable Queenstown.

Speaker, Matthew Cutler-Welsh from the NZ Green Building Council, will share 15 years of experience leading residential energy efficiency projects and education programmes in Aotearoa and Australia.

Jessica Eyers, who designed her family’s home in Wānaka - NZ’s first strawbale home to gain Passive House certification, will share her passion for thermal design and performance, and ensuring all homes are healthy and comfortable.

The evening will be facilitated by Arthur Lee, a local Architectural Designer + Certified Passive House Consultant for Respond Architects.

“This event is perfect for those of us who aren’t planning on building a new, high-performance house, and rather live in existing homes and want to make a difference to our quality of living space while reducing our energy bill,” said Jess.

Tickets for the event are available for $5 on Humanitix, and there will be time for a panel discussion and Q&A with the speakers.

Green Drinks takes place from 6.30pm Thursday 18th May at Sudima Hotel in 5 Mile.

Headlight celebrates the big 5-0!

The Headlight team is celebrating a major milestone this month; with 50 mental health education workshops having been delivered to the Queenstown Lakes and wider Southern community to date!

Since 2021, Headlight’s diverse team of passionate community facilitators have been out and about connecting with hundreds of people from priority groups across the region to understand what mental health is and to have more confidence, skills and knowledge to talk about it with their friends, whānau and community.

Key achievements to date:

• 50 GoodYarn community workshops delivered since 2021

• 407 people in Queenstown Lakes and Southern community have participated in the community programme

• 17 facilitators trained to deliver workshop locally

• 100% of participants say they would recommend the workshop to others

• 80% of participants have used what they’ve learnt from the workshop

The GoodYarn community programme, which is unique to Queenstown Lakes, was created following the COVID-related events of 2020. This workshop milestone is a real cause for celebration, explains Anna Dorsey, Chief Executive of Headlight.

“We initially wanted to take action to help reach those people in our community who were struggling but weren’t engaging with clinical services and our aim was to build better support around them. Yet what we’ve learnt over this past two years is that empowering local people with mental health education has significant value to our community as a whole. It’s an important preventative strategy that builds resilience, prepares people to better handle the ups and downs of life, and creates a more connected caring community across many different groups, neighbourhoods and networks. It helps build the kind of community we’d all like to live in.“

Workshops are being held in May and June to support priority groups including NGOs and volunteers, tourism operators and small business communities in the QLDC. To find out about upcoming events head to (https://headlight.org.nz/upcoming-workshops)

Saudi

Aramco’s

1st quarter profit down about a fifth to $31B

Oil giant Saudi Aramco has reported a first-quarter profit of $31.88 billion, down nearly 20% from the same period last year as energy prices have sunk over global recession concerns. The firm known formally as the Saudi Arabian Oil Co. blamed the drop — compared to $39.47 billion in the same quarter last year — on the lower crude oil prices. Aramco made a $30.73 billion profit in the fourth quarter of last year.

Benchmark Brent crude traded last week around $US76 a barrel, down from a high of $US125 in the last year.

Woman survives 5 days on wine and lollipops in Australia bushland

A 48-year-old woman who was stranded for five days in the dense bushland of Australia said she survived on only wine and lollipops. The woman, Lillian Ip from Cheltenham in Victoria, was treated at a hospital for dehydration after she was rescued by Victoria Police.

“She was only planning a short-day trip so she had only taken a couple of snacks and lollies with her, but no water,” said Sgt. Martin Torpey of the Wodonga police station. “The only liquid Lillian, who doesn’t drink, had with her was a bottle of wine she had bought as a gift for her mother.”

Ip was headed to Dartmouth Dam in Bright, Victoria, by car last week when she took a wrong turn and ended up stuck in the mud, police said. With no cellphone service, she couldn’t call for help.

Heroic train conductor spots and saves 3-year-old autistic, nonverbal boy lost on tracks

Five NYC MTA employees are hailed as heroes for their quick thinking and diligence in a rescue of a young boy. Locomotive Engineer William Kennedy was operating a southbound Hudson Line train near Tarrytown, a few miles north of New York City, when he noticed an unusual object on the northbound track.

That “object” was a 3-year-old boy.

Kennedy sent an emergency call out to all trains in the area, catching the attention of a northbound conductor, Shawn Loughran, and a trainee. Loughran slowed down his train as he approached the child, who was straddling the electrified third rail.

“The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, if it was a minute later I wouldn’t have seen him.”

Safely cradling the little one, Higgins whisked him on board the train, and the crew set off towards Tarrytown Station.

During the rescue, the boy’s mother and sister frantically looked for the child. They were spotted by police sobbing on a street corner. The police put two and two together and reunited the boy with his family at the station. The mother told the MTA employees that the boy was autistic and nonverbal.

Unlimited film streaming with the library

A library card with QLDC Libraries unlocks unlimited access to three fantastic film streaming services: Beamafilm, Bloomsbury Video Library, and Drama Online. Check out some staff picks from these services. Head to the QLDC Library website or pop into your local library to learn more!

Some options on Beamafilm:

Lucky Grandma (2019)

In the heart of Chinatown, an ornery, chain-smoking, newly widowed 80-year-old grandma is eager to live life as an independent woman, despite the worry of her family. When a local fortune teller (Wai Ching Ho) predicts a most auspicious day in her future, Grandma decides to head to the casino and goes all in, only to land herself on the wrong side of luck... suddenly attracting the attention of some local gangsters. Desperate to protect herself, Grandma employs the services of a bodyguard (Corey Ha) from a rival gang and soon finds herself right in the middle of a Chinatown gang war. Director Sasie Sealy brings to life a dark comedy about immigrant life, the vulnerabilities of aging, and an unexpected friendship. Set in alleyways and underground mahjong parlors with a cast of richly drawn characters, Lucky Grandma is a love letter to Chinatown and an homage to all the badass elderly women who inhabit it.

Boy (2010)

Boy is a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson. He lives with his brother Rocky, a tribe of deserted cousins and his Nan. Boy’s other hero, his father, Alamein, is the subject of Boy’s fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson (he can even dance like him). In reality he’s “in the can for robbery”. When Alamein returns home after seven years away, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered, find his own potential and learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for.

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool (2017)

Real life proves to be just as dramatic off-screen as it does on it for ageing Hollywood superstar Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening) and her much younger lover, Peter Turner (Jamie Bell). As their mismatched romance waxes and wanes over time, events conspire to keep them in each other’s lives even when it proves to be difficult and demanding. Ultimately, they find that they must each come to terms with whatever fate they face in the future whether they are together or apart. This romantic biographical drama stars Annette Bening and Jamie Bell alongside Vanessa Redgrave and Julie Walters. Based on Peter Turner’s memoirs, the movie depicts Turner’s relationship with the Academy Award-winning America.

The Bicycle Thief (1948)

A masterpiece of Italian filmmaking and foundation stone of the neorealist film movement, Vittorio De Sica’s The Bicycle Thief is a harrowing portrait of loss and depravation in post-war Rome.Awarded an honorary Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and regularly voted one of the greatest films of all time, The Bicycle Thief is a simple, powerful movie about a man who needs a job. Like the great neo-realist film that preceded it, Roberto Rosselini’s Open City, The Bicycle Thief was shot on location in the streets of Rome using non-professional actors, giving chilling authenticity to the story of a man’s desperate bid to provide for his family.De Sica combined with long-time collaborator, writer Cesare Zavattini (Miracle in Milan, Umberto D), to produce a potent mix of real life detail, detective story and poetic melodrama as a father (Lamberto Maggiorani) and his devoted son (Enzo Staiola) roam the streets of the capital in search of the bicycle that will deliver them from poverty.

I Am Not Your Negro (2016)

Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck (The Man by the Shore, Moloch Tropical, Murder in Pacot), returns with a transcendent documentary examining the life and work of literary iconoclast and queer icon James Baldwin. The Oscar-nominated “I Am Not Your Negro” is based on Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript “Remember This House”, a stirring, personal account of the lives and deaths of his friends and US Civil Rights Movement leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Through these accounts, Baldwin’s considered yet razor-sharp activism bears witness to the impact and legacy of race in America, which forms the focus of Peck’s cinematic dissection of the enduring effects of social and racial inequality. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson and over a decade in the making, “I Am Not Your Negro” seamlessly interweaves the historical and contemporary into an experience that blurs the past and present, demanding its audience consider how far we’ve come since the 1960s. Part history lesson, part biography, ‘I Am Not Your Negro” is a remarkable example of the documentary genre and a stirring call to action against injustice in the 21st Century. Winner of the Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award, it was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Ans Westra (2006)

Private Journeys / Public Signposts turns the camera on photographer Ans Westra. The Dutch émigré has captured iconic images of New Zealanders since the late 1950s, expressively observing Aotearoa societal changes, particularly Māori urban drift. This film explores her remarkable life and work, and includes commentary from family and friends, fellow photographers, and colleagues — plus discussion of the controversy over her 1964 book Washday at the Pā. Luit Bieringa, curator of Westra’s retrospective photo exhibition, directed the documentary — it was his first.

Some options from Bloomsbury Video Library:

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake

After causing an immediate sensation when it premiered at Sadler’s Wells in 1995, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake returns with a fresh look for the 21st century. Still retaining the iconic elements of the original production loved by millions around the world, award-winning designers, Lez Brotherston and Paule Constable, alongside Bourne, have created an exciting re-imagining of the classic production.

Collecting over thirty international accolades, including an Olivier Award in the UK and three Tonys on Broadway, Matthew Bourne’s powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for our times.

Shakespeare’s Sonnets

Shakespeare’s Sonnets features specially filmed readings of every sonnet by a star-studded cast.

New performances were filmed of all 154 sonnets by a stellar cast including Sir Patrick Stewart, Kim Cattrall, David Tennant, Simon Russell Beale, Dominic West, Siân Phillips, Fiona Shaw, Dame Harriet Walter, Simon Callow, Stephen Fry, and poets Don Paterson and Sir Andrew Motion.
