LAKES WEEKLY

LOCALLY OWNED SINCE FOREVER BULLETIN

Time to start pulling levers, Minister Drive around Queenstown late at night and see how many people are sleeping in their cars. That was the suggestion to Housing Minister Dr Megan Woods from some members of the Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce last week, when the Minister came to town for talks with business leaders, politicians and bureaucrats about the local housing crisis. I might be doing her a disservice here, but I doubt she took them up on their offer. That’s a shame because when Cabinet is discussing the Residential Tenancy Act, Healthy Homes Standards, the mortgage interest-deductibility and other legislation that has made it less attractive for property owners to rent out rooms and houses, it would be good for her to be able to picture some of the people at the sharp end.

They could have told her what it’s like to work a ten-hour shift in hospo, in the kitchens or behind a bar, or in retail or the tourism industry, then drive your car out to 12 Mile, flatten the back seat and get in your sleeping bag. Or what it’s like to sleep in a tent as the temperature plummets, or to rely on the generosity of friends for a couch or a floor. They could have told her what it’s like to stand in a line at a rental house showing, feeling guilty about trying to persuade the rental agent to pick you, because there’s also families with young children wanting to rent the property. Those were some of the stories from people at last month’s passionate housing protest, organised by Hannah Sullivan and Lindsay Waterfield.

On the whole, the Minister appeared focused on the long-term problem of affordable housing in the district, while everyone else in the room was looking for solutions to the short-term crisis of people having nowhere to live, affordable or not. She only mentioned rentals a couple of times during her Chamber speech, to point out we now have more rentals than we did pre-Covid. We do, slightly, but also have more people in town on the whole. And there are far fewer backpacker hostel beds, which provided some respite.

By the end of the Q&A session, however, the Minister appeared to have got the message. Her problem now will be finding the right lever to pull. While the legislation mentioned above has contributed to the problem, it is all well-intentioned. We don’t want people living in damp, cold houses, or kicked out on a whim with a few weeks’ notice. Neither do we want house prices to be unaffordable because anyone with a bit of capital snaps up anything on the market, pricing out first-time buyers. But, when you have people working full-time jobs getting paid above the living wage, and they are effectively homeless, something has to change quickly. Longer term, a nationwide limit on Airbnb might help. Or, what about a rule that whole houses can only be Airbnb’d if they’ve been let out as rentals for three years?

Super balloon flight captures first images

The imaging telescope on the super pressure balloon launched from Wanaka earlier this month has captured its first incredible images of space.

The balloon-borne SuperBIT telescope snapped the Tarantula Nebula and Antennae Galaxies, while floating at 108,000 feet above Earth’s surface, in a near-space environment.

It costs far less than launching a space telescope on a rocket but can circumnavigate the globe for up to 100 days, gathering scientific data, at an altitude where it avoids the atmospheric distortion.

The SuperBIT telescope captures images of galaxies in the visible-to-near ultraviolet light spectrum, which is within the Hubble Space Telescope’s capabilities, but with a wider field of view. The goal of the mission is to map dark matter around galaxy clusters by measuring the way these massive objects warp the space around them, also called “weak gravitational lensing”.

The Tarantula Nebula is a large star-forming region of ionized hydrogen gas that lies 161,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and its turbulent clouds of gas and dust appear to swirl between the region’s bright, newly formed stars. The Tarantula Nebula has previously been captured by both the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope.

The Antennae galaxies, catalogued as NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, are two large galaxies colliding 60 million light-years away toward the southerly constellation Corvus. The galaxies have previously been captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra X-ray Observatory, and now-retired Spitzer Space Telescope. A composite image of the galaxies combines data taken by all three telescopes.

The SuperBIT team is a collaboration among NASA; Durham University, United Kingdom; the University of Toronto, Canada; and Princeton University in New Jersey.

Police urge ‘expectation discussions’ to avoid alcohol-fuelled sexual assaults

In the lead-up to a busy ski season of partying Queenstown Police are warning young women especially to have a plan and be vigilant when alcohol is involved, with a number of sexual assault-related charges laid in recent times.

Detective Sergeant Miriam Chittenden says an overindulgence of alcohol is most often a factor and she’s urging young people to “have the conversation about expectations” before going back to anyone’s place.

“We’re concerned about incidences of young people meeting up in a bar or club, heading back to a house with someone and finding out discussions weren’t had, or consent was not given,” says Detective Sergeant Chittenden. People may have brought someone home and the male may have very different expectations to the female he’s invited, she says.

“Make sure you’re in a position to consent around alcohol and drug taking, know who you’re going with. Men need to be aware that alcohol is a factor and can impair someone’s judgment,” says Detective Sergeant Chittenden. Men also have a responsibility around making the right decision and shouldn’t ‘guess the yes’. Someone who is intoxicated to a level that they can’t make an informed consent is not consenting.

Police have definitely charged people for sexual-related offences locally and with the winter party season approaching Detective Sergeant Chittenden is urging caution with a number of those cases currently before the courts. “People’s lives get ruined - women and men. You can get arrested for a 20-year jail offence called rape,” she says. “A number of our sexual assault-related investigations involve alcohol. The biggest thing we’re seeing is young people, mostly in their 20s, meeting in town, alcoholaffected, then engaging in sexual activity further than expected, or coming back to someone’s place and things progressing to a level the woman is uncomfortable with.”

She says a woman may appear to be consenting on the dance floor and seem coherent and able to consent, then by the time they get to a house they’re unable to do so and are either unconscious or fall asleep.

The problem is evident among both locals and visitors. “If you’ve been up the mountain all day and you want to engage in the party scene, which is why people come to Queenstown, then be aware that alcohol greatly impairs judgement.”

Detective Sergeant Chittenden urges groups of friends to have a plan about getting home. “Check in with your mates and say, ‘Hey, are you happy to go with this person?’” Friends need to communicate and ensure their mates are happy about where they’re going. “Make sure people are safe and they’re not getting into something they didn’t expect then find out it’s way beyond their expectations because they didn’t have those discussions beforehand.”

Friends should have an address and also a plan about how they’re all getting home, and roughly what time. “Otherwise they get home and notice suddenly someone’s disappeared,” says Detective Sergeant Chittenden. “Stick with friends and keep an eye out for each other.”

Police also warn people to be aware of drink spiking with cases in the past, although it’s not common.

Central Lakes Family Services Business Manager Jane Guy agrees it’s time men took responsibility. Men need to be having those conversations at home, at school, in a bar, with friends, and questioning behaviour and language that disrespects women, she says. “It starts when boys are born, how they view women.”

Statistics quoted at a recent National Family Violence Conference revealed extremely alarming rates of sexual assault and abuse, she says.

“Some men need to know it’s not their right to take this person home and do what they want with her, even if she’s inebriated,” says Jane.

Sexual assault is a “ginormous issue”, both locally and nationally. “This is a very stressed community at the minute with financial hardship and housing issues. What can we do this winter to connect with people who have stuff going on and have those conversations?”

“The issue with alcohol is it puts the onus back on the woman to keep herself safe. Men need to ask how hard they’re partying and how they can make good decisions when they take a young woman home. Look out for her.”

She urges women to have their phone charged and on, and money for a taxi home if they do go home with someone.

If they need help, or have questions about a situation, Central Lakes Family Services has a 24/7 helpline – 050 844 0255, or see: clfs.co.nz

Super summer season for the bikes

Queenstown and Wanaka’s summer mountain biking seasons are coming to a close. Cardrona and Coronet closed at the start of this month and Skyline’s season officially ended this past weekend. The trails have been abuzz with bike enthusiasts in the first season with borders open since Covid-19. We’re fortunate to be one of the world’s top mountain biking destination and boast a large diversity of trails for all ages and abilities. This season was jam-packed with events – the 2023 Mountain Bike National Championships took place at Coronet Peak, Crankworx Summer Series toured the region, and Red Bull Foxhunt rolled into Cardrona for its first time in New Zealand.

Additionally, mountain biking history was made in January at the Queenstown Bike Festival. For the first time in the country, a female bronze freeride mountain bike (FMB) event was held. Wynyard Bike Park was taken over by the Mons Royale Slopestyle event where four entered the female youth jam and nine entered the open female category – Rotorua’s Robin Goomes won the event.

Coronet Peak just wrapped up their fourth season of mountain biking and it’s been a great one for them. They first opened the bike park in 2019 in the lead up to the pandemic and are happy that they’ve been able to continue to grow since then.

“It was certainly our best season ever, in terms of participation and revenue, which was great because after three years battling with Covid on and off it was nice to see,” says Nigel Kerr the Ski Area Manager of Coronet Peak.

“It was a breakthrough season for us in many ways – sightseeing is a big part of it but the biking really continued to grow on the back of last year – we’re feeling really good, we’re feeling really strong. We’ve got a good option here that fits into the Queenstown market really well.”

Coronet have mostly seen locals and visitors from within New Zealand at their bike park this year, but they’re slowly seeing the return of international visitors. They’ve credited this year’s success in part to their jam-packed events schedule.

“We’re becoming well-established and more known – we had some pretty big events this year, such as the Coro1200 Series, which are really key local mountain biking events. We also hosted both the New Zealand Mountain Biking Nationals and the South Island Schools Event.

“Those events are really good benchmarks for where we’re getting to in terms of what we can do and how we can run events – there’s a really good vibe from those. I think they’re helping to amplify our reach to other riders or riders thinking of visiting the area,” says Nigel.

While the Gondola’s may have stopped and the chairlifts have shut down until winter, the region has plenty of bike trails that are open year-round.For more information on what’s happening in the community and the trails on offer you can join the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club at queenstownmtb.co.nz

Minister faces grilling over housing red-tape

Housing Minister Megan Woods says there are no quick-fixes to Queenstown’s “decades-in-the-making” housing crisis.

Woods, speaking to Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce members last week, detailed the Labour Government’s work towards increasing the supply of affordable housing in the unaffordable district. But it was short-term solutions to the district’s rental crisis that audience members wanted to grill her on.

They told the Minister the capacity is there, with around a quarter of homes in the district empty year-round, but properties aren’t being made available to rent because owners’ hands are tied by Government red tape.

Hayley Stevenson, Director of property managers Housemart Queenstown Ltd, told the Minister changes to the Residential Tenancy Act, specifically around ending fixed term tenancies, meant holiday property owners were no longer making their homes available to rent short-term.

Stevenson says she is dealing with a couple that are moving into their car to live, with their two-year-old child, because they had nowhere to go.

“I have had a homeowner come to me offering his house for four months that would be suitable for these people. But I cannot guarantee that owner at the four-month end of that fixed term tenancy that I can hand the house back, because I need a reason to end that tenancy.

“Because our non-reason clause has been taken away from us, with the changes to the RTA, it has really hindered our seasonal supply.”

Stevenson says the company used to have about 40 houses over in Wanaka offered as seasonal rentals and there’d be at least that number in Queenstown.

Woods said there is room within the RTA to house seasonal workers, but Stevenson counted that they can change their mind about staying, during the tenancy.

Woods: “Legislative change is something that takes a long period of time, and I’m not making any commitment to that, but I wonder if there’s a shortterm solution that perhaps the Chamber could be involved in, as there’s some people that are so clearly seasonal workers.”

Woods was also questioned on reinstating mortgage interest-deductibility for landlords, the potential for transitional housing in Queenstown, as seen in the wake of the Christchurch earthquake, the potential to force residential homeowners to bring their own homes up to Healthy Homes standards, creating parity with the rental market, Kiwi Saver caps, and ways to monitor the more than 1500 Airbnbs, especially those flouting 90-day rules without resource consent.

There were groans when, about halfway through the session, the Minister continued to suggest it was a capacity issue, which would be addressed through building more houses.

By the end, she told the audience there was much she could take away from the session.

“I really wanted to come down and have those conversations, we have the [urban] growth partnership for a reason, and it’s because we need to find

local solutions as well. It’s to talk to you, it’s to talk to a range of people, and find out on the ground what people are thinking are some of the solutions,” Woods said.

“I’m not here today to announce, I’m here to discuss, but certainly I think there’s a range of things that in the future may be able to be implemented.”

Minister Woods also met with Queenstown’s mayor Glyn Lewers and the Urban Growth Partnership, which includes a range of organisations, during her visit.

After the Chamber session, she told media it had been an “incredibly useful” visit.

“Believe me, the housing crisis, as Minister of Housing, I understand the complexity and seriousness of it every single day,” she said.

“It manifests in different ways in different parts of the country, but there is no doubt we are in a housing crisis that has been decades in the making and our Government has made it a priority to make sure that we are doing everything we can to increase the supply of houses in New Zealand, but most importantly, to increase the supply of affordable houses in New Zealand.”

Woods lauded the work of the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust and highlighted fast-track consents, including Ladies Mile and the Silverlight Studios in Wanaka, which will include worker housing.

She confirmed she will look at the Residential Tenancies Act with regards to periodic tenancies.

“But we do want to ensure that we’re not just giving someone a roof over the head for a couple of months, and then they’re back in the car or homeless again. So, it’s about getting that balance right as well.

“...if there really are any landlords that want to help out, and help solve this crisis, and they, say, only want to rent it for six months, then I’m sure there’s a pool of seasonal workers here in Queenstown that we could do some matching with.”

And Woods was also asked about build-to-rent schemes, which Porter Group at Remarkables Park is investigating.

“This is something that I’ve already made changes around, and made sure that we’ve made interest-deductibility a permanent feature of build-to-rent, because I see it as a critical part of how we solve the housing crisis.”

Woods said the Ministry has also issued guidance to developers over whether overseas investment in NZ build-to-rent developments was prohibited by the Overseas Investment Act.

“I have legal advice that is not the case. We’ve issued guidance. I’m getting feedback that some developers still don’t fully understand that.”

Woods says her officials, the Property Council and the developers’ lawyers will get together in one room to “thrash this out.”

“If we have to make changes we will, but I don’t think we do. I think it’s a matter of making sure that we’ve got good information for people that want to make that investment, that our government is the party that has prioritised build-to-rent.”

My Life Story

MAREE AOAKE

A multicultural multitasker

She launched into life from a small town Southland upbringing to a love story and life trajectory that before long would see her delight in being immersed into both Maori and Japanese culture. Maree Aoake took it all in her stride.

A first day pupil at Gore’s St Peter’s College, she became head girl, before studying for a Bachelor of Education at Otago University. “That’s where I met my gorgeous husband, Merv, who was at PE School,” she says. Merv, who passed away in 2020, started teaching in Christchurch, Maree joining him to teach there once qualified.

She was quickly welcomed into Merv’s extensive Matamata whanau, getting the nod from his Uncle Titi. “He was shelling pipis on the steps and I started to help. Merv came out and his uncle gave a thumbs up and said, ‘She’s alright, mate.’”

They married in 1982 and Maree had just scored her first teaching promotion when Merv, a talented rugby player, was invited to play rugby in Japan – one of the first Kiwi rugby players to do so. Merv, who played for Canterbury under former All Black coach Grizz Wyllie, and in the NZ Universities Team, had just returned from a rugby trip there.

They rented out the house they’d just bought, moving to Kumamoto in Southern Japan.

The career-oriented ‘little girl from Gore’ then found herself an “honourable okusan” (wife) in Japan. “I was told I was there to look after my husband, to make a swimming pool for him to swim in, and if he was tired to make it smaller and if he was energetic to extend it. I said, ‘But what about my swimming pool?!’”

Maree taught English to businesses, then later to pre-schoolers and mums, while Merv became a Japanese rugby superstar, swamped by media interviews.

Merv picked up the language quickly while Maree studied extramurally. It was essential. “Rugby Japanese was very different to formal Japanese and I made some embarrassing mistakes in the early days.”

Once, in her newly-accomplished Japanese tongue, Maree accidentally told a company official she looked like a ‘fish’, instead of like her son.

On another occasion at a very expensive restaurant with company bosses, Maree, proudly rehearsed in the traditional squat toilet, was instead drenched by a super powered bidet full of gadgets and instructions she couldn’t read. They’d save up and bike to the next city once a month to enjoy a $200, 3-minute phone call with their families in NZ.

Daughter Ana and son James were both born there, in a country then offering no pain relief during childbirth. “You just got on with it.” Merv raised eyebrows when he wanted to be at Ana’s birth - long and challenging. “He got some sharp words when he likened my childbirth pain to a bike ride we once did from Christchurch to Gore, saying, ‘Come on, Pal! You’re nearly at the top of the Kilmog!’” smiles Maree. “It was the only time I lost patience with Merv.” Maybe that wasn’t the only time. Her contractions started strong with James while watching Merv’s rugby game in Japan. “I signalled to Merv, ‘Got to go NOW!’ He ran off the field and said, ‘Do you think we can wait until the final whistle, Pal?” That was a firm, ‘No!’, Maree almost giving birth in the car park, then the whole rugby team arriving at the hospital soon afterward.

After five wonderful years in Japan making lifelong friendships, it was time to come home.

Merv taught at Wakatipu High School and in January, 1993, Maree launched Queenstown’s first Language School, Southern Lakes English College, with Stella Doubleday. They ran that for 12 years, benefitting greatly from Maree’s Japanese business contacts. Pioneers in Queenstown, they had a captive market incorporating Adventure English programmes, which combined the likes of rafting and snowboarding with English lessons. Southern Lakes English College also piloted Wintech, an English language skiing/ snowboarding instructors’ course, which was later taken to Whistler.

Merv was soon invited back to coach rugby, commuting regularly to Japan. For eight years,

Maree and the kids joined him for the second school term and the Christmas holidays. Maree home schooled the kids while periodically flying to other Asian countries to market the Language School.

In 2005, Maree sold the school, taking up HR manager roles at Millbrook, then The Heritage for eight years, and now Skyline.

Kind, gentle and empathetic, Maree has also been a volunteer counsellor, first for Lifeline while at uni, notching 17 years’ service for Wakatipu Victim Support - 15 on its committee, for which she was awarded special honours last year. Maree also serves on the Youthline Southland Board and says this work has given her a huge appreciation for her own loving and supportive family who’ve helped her through tough times. “I now get to pass that support on to others.”

From left, James, Maree, Ana, Hamish and grandson Flynn with pet pooch Frankie, all celebrating Maree’s recent 65th birthday at Moeraki. The Aoake family at Ana’s Shichi-Go-San - a traditional Japanese celebration for her third birthday. From left Ana, Merv,James and Maree.

Major Central Otago drugs raid

Police recovered 21 weapons and a substantial amount of cannabis after a major operation targeting an alleged Central Otago-based drug syndicate.

More than 70 officers raided properties in Cromwell, Tarras and the Haast last Tuesday, as well as two large cannabis plots and several smaller ones dotted over an 8km of remote Crown Lease land and DOC land in south Westland.

They arrested three men who they believe are responsible for producing commercial-scale quantities of cannabis in south Westland, and bringing methamphetamine into Cromwell.

Altogether, they face 28 charges, after the raids, which took more than a year of planning and included members of the Armed Offenders Squad, the Specialist Search Group, dogs trained in detecting guns, cash and drugs, as well as officers from Christchurch, Dunedin, and the West Coast.

The operation’s one of the most significant in the area in recent years, says District Manager Criminal Investigations Detective Inspector Shona Low.

“We have targeted a commercial crime group that’s been causing harm by pumping drugs into Central Otago and the West Coast – solely to make money for the people behind it.

“These communities can be assured that due to this operation’s success, we have dealt a blow to organised criminal activity in the area.”

The men appeared in Queenstown District Court on Wednesday.

A 44-year-old Tarras man faces eight charges related to the alleged sale and supply of methamphetamine and cannabis. He was remanded in custody. Also remanded in custody was another 44-year-old man, of Cromwell. He is facing eight charges related to the unlawful possession of firearms, the supply of methamphetamine, the supply of cannabis, and failing to comply. And a 52-year-old man was remanded on bail, facing 12 charges related to the supply of methamphetamine, the sale and supply of cannabis, unlawful possession of firearms, and possession of cannabis.

All three are due to appear in Alexandra District Court on 17 May.

Weapons and ammo were seized by police.

Some of the cannabis recovered from DOC land in Westland. Work on the campaign, dubbed Operation Vintage, began in March 2022, following concerns around an influx of drugs and associated harm in Cromwell.

Drones from the Specialist Search Group assisted Police in locating areas of interest in the isolated bush area, while officers travelled by helicopter and foot – retracing the challenging routes taken by those accused of growing the plants.

“There has been a real effort to hide growing sites. They have been found deep in the wilderness, in areas where hunters would be unlikely to stumble across them.

“It takes considerable effort to get to the areas where these plants have been growing.”

Low says this is not a Police operation targeting small-time growers, or about personal use or low-level offending, but about large-scale operations “who profit from the considerable harm”.

“This commercial operation was designed to make money for those running it, with no regard for the harm it caused to people at the other end,” Detective Inspector Low says.

Gangs and organised crime groups can use the profits from cannabis sales to fund the purchase and sale of more harmful drugs, and flaunt their wealth through social media, attracting young people into their lifestyle, Low says. Information can be passed to Police via 105 by phone on online, or alternatively information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-nz.org

FROM AROUND THE WORLD

India’s Population Boom

India’s is on track to pass China as the world’s most populous country sometime this month, experts say.. Both countries updated population data last summer—models project India will end the year with around 1.429 billion people, compared to China’s 1.426 billion.

India has added 1 billion people in the past 70 years, and analysts say the country’s growing population may position it as a top economic power in coming decades. More than 40% of the population is under 25 years. The rapid growth has strained public services and health infrastructure, among other challenges.

Phantom of the Opera’ takes a final Broadway bow

On Sunday night, April 16, the curtain fell on the longest-running show in Broadway history. The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mega hit musical, closed for the final time after more than 35 years.

The stats are absolutely staggering – since it opened on Broadway in January of 1988, Phantom has played almost 14,000 performances to audiences of over 20 million, grossing over $1.3 billion. An estimated 6,500 people have been employed by the production – including over 400 actors – and it takes a cast, orchestra and crew of 125 to put on the show.

Even the longest running show in Broadway history has to close at some point. Producer Cameron Mackintosh says Phantom was losing money, even before the pandemic. So, last September, he and Andrew Lloyd Webber announced a final date. “The following week, we were profitable for the first time, so, you know, it was the right decision to take at the right time. And, you know, I think people’s memory now is back with people saying Phantom of the Opera is one of the great successes of all time, which is what one always prays when a great show finishes.”

J2022 Tongan volcanic explosion was largest natural explosion in over a century

The 2022 eruption of a submarine volcano in Tonga was more powerful than the largest U.S. nuclear explosion, according to a new study led by scientists…

The 15-megaton volcanic explosion from Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, one of the largest natural explosions in more than a century, generated a mega-tsunami with waves up to 45-meters high along the coast of Tonga’s Tofua Island and waves up to 17 meters on Tongatapu, the country’s most populated island.

In a new analysis researchers used a combination of before-and-after satellite imagery, drone mapping, and field observations to produce a tsunami simulation of the Tongan Archipelago.

The submarine volcanic eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, which forms the island chain of Tonga and is a result of the convergence of the Pacific and Indo-Australian tectonic plates, rivaled the 1883 eruption of Krakatau.

Montana on cusp of becoming first US state to block TikTok downloads

Montana lawmakers passed a bill recently blocking downloads of TikTok, the most significant action yet by a state yet against the app. The bill makes it illegal for app stores to give users the option to download the app and also illegal for the company to operate within the state. The bill does not, however, make it illegal for people who already have TikTok to use the app. A previous version of the bill sought to force internet providers to block TikTok, but that language was later removed. The bill passed by a vote of 54-43. The bill is now headed to Gov. Greg Gianforte, a Republican, who is expected to sign it.

Grandchildren can be bad for your health, as I just discovered - don’t mention it to any of the safety morons of our country or they might ban contact with grandchildren or insist on us wearing hard hats and steelcapped boots and hiring orange vested security people to keep us SAFE ( I do hate that word these days). I did a bit of poor handling with our delicious two year old, and ended up having to go to the acupuncturist to get prickled back into a painless, upright position. Greg Dorn is not just a whizz with the needles but is also a pretty sharp actor, performing soon in the Pintsized plays - look up Remarkable Theatre for the sessions in early May. The plays sound really fun - they’re designed to be performed in pubs. Almost glad I hurt myself so I could find about them. And our tiniest, newest granddaughter has given my elderly husband a snivelly, coughy and achey cold. I asked him if I should call the undertaker, and he thought that was very unsympathetic. Luckily I have my new lovemy Aga oven- Agas never argue, they don’t disappear when there’s a job to be done, they’re always warm and comforting, extremely goodlooking, cook like a dream and safer to lean against than a fireplace.

A propos of fireplaces, I’ve had two people ask me if I know what the one that’s been built right on SH6 at Lake Hayes is for - does anyone know? It looks very strange and lonely just sitting there. Any information gratefully received.

And the wonderful Broker Art Gallery which used to be in Five Mile is now down in Shed 8 at Frankton Marina, only for a couple of months apparently. Next Wednesday, at 5.30 pm Impact100 is hosting an event there . If any women want to hear about what this terrific group does , just turn up. Two of the programmes that have received the $100,000 will be giving short talks about what it’s done for them AND you get to look at some very exciting art.

I’ve had a total art feast this week. A whirlwind 3 days in Sydney to see my sons AND some fabulous exhibitions. Art is all very well, but for me, a great gallery has to have a topnotch restaurant and shop. Oh, and clean loos. The new building at the art gallery of New South Wales is terrific and left this fussy and very shallow old lady totally satisfied (with the art as well as the other essential bits). Wandering around the city was fabulous - it’s a great city not to have a car in - excellent public transport and there’s exciting architecture all over the place. The refurb of the Bondi Pavilion is completed and is only making Bondi even sexier and more appealing than ever. I feel a bit disloyal saying it, given what wonderful walking and cycling trails there are here, but Sydney’s coastal trails are equally good. I watched two submarines sneak out to sea from one of them, and as I fumbled around with my phone to take a photo, they disappeared under the water - my photo only has a tiny speck of the top. I’ve shown it to friends and they are pretty underwhelmed with my skills. For some very skilled local art, do whizz along to the Lakes District Museum. I lied to my husband and said I was just taking my mother along to the opening of the Autumn Art Festival and would be back in an hour. 2 1/2 hours later I finally managed to prise my mother out of the handy spot she’d found right by the bar, and took her home. All the naughtiest people I know were there and there was lots to chat about.

The queue to buy the artworks was satisfyingly long so with any luck the museum will earn lots of handy dosh to make it even more marvellous - is that even possible? We already have the best museum in the country! The exhibition is still on for a few more weeks, so do make the effort to get along and see what talented artists we have in our midst.

FERTILITY SUPPORT

Are you or do you know someone who is having trouble conceiving naturally? One of the greatest ways to deal with infertility is to talk about it. This is not always easy or comfortable. You may also feel alone and not have people to talk to who understand the experience of infertility. Due to the private nature of infertility, it is difficult to know who to contact.

Our friendly support groups are for anyone facing infertility. This is a chance to connect with others - we can't change the outcome of your journey, but peer support can make the process so much less dauting and lonely.

Wanaka A&P Show donates $30,000 to North Island farming communities

The Wanaka A&P Show has donated $30,000 towards ongoing support for Cyclone Gabrielle-affected farmers and rural communities. The significant donation was raised through ticket sales from the 2023 Wanaka A&P Show, held in March. One dollar from every adult ticket sold and livestock entry contributed to the fund.

The Wanaka A&P Show’s governing body – the Upper Clutha A&P Society – donated the funds to the Rural Support Trust, an on-the-ground service supporting cyclone-impacted rural communities in New Zealand.

Upper Clutha A&P Society board chair Brenda King says the decision to donate was unanimous across the board and management team.

“We all agreed it was important to give and support in a way that would directly reach those on the ground,” King explains. “The Northland and Hawke’s Bay rural communities are resilient, and after what they’ve been through, it’s about supporting however we can.”

Wanaka A&P Show event manager Jane Stalker says if the roles were reversed, these regions would do the same thing.

Alpine Aqualand will be closed from 23-30 April for its annual deep clean and maintenance. It’ll reopen bright and shiny on Monday 1 May. The gym and other facilities at Queenstown Events Centre remain open as normal.

What we do in public

Two local bylaws about what it’s OK to do in public are up for review and we want to hear from you. The draft Activities in Public Places Bylaw could regulate things like e-scooters, where flyers can be handed out and busking locations. The draft Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw aims to reduce the potential for alcohol-related harm and keep areas family friendly. For full details head to letstalk.qldc.govt.nz before 5 May.

Arrowtown-Kawarau by-election

Voting in the Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward by-election closes at midday on Friday 5 May. Eligible voters in Arrowtown, Arthurs Point, Crown Terrace, Dalefield, Gibbston, Lake Hayes and Shotover Country can drop off completed ballot papers at Arrowtown Library and the Council office at 10 Gorge Rd, Queenstown (where you can also make a special vote if you haven’t received voting papers). More info at qldc.govt.nz/2023-by-election

Grants available for ‘wasteful’ ideas!

Got a clever idea for reducing waste or finding other ways to make use of stuff we normally throw away?

Grants from QLDC’s Waste Minimisation Community Fund are available to help local groups, schools and businesses make a real difference. Applications close Friday 19 May. More info at qldc.govt.nz/wmcf

“That’s what makes the rural community particularly special. When times are tough, it’s about getting stuck in and helping one another,” she says. The contributed funds will be split respectively between two Rural Support Trusts, the East Coast ($20,000) and Northland ($10,000).

East Coast Rural Support Trust chairperson Clint Worthington says 100 per cent of donations will go directly to affected communities.

“These sorts of donations will go direct to farmers to help them with recovery. We have a long road ahead and it will take many years to get through it together,” he adds.

Some on-the-ground needs include consultancy, workshops and ongoing mental health support, as well as tangible resources such as seeds and fencing.

It is understood Cyclone Gabrielle’s economic costs surpasses that of Cyclone Bola in 1988, with cost estimates reported to be in the billions. Cyclone Bola’s horticulture and farming losses amounted to $90 million (equivalent to $210 million in 2023) with the Government’s cyclone repair bill more than $111 million ($260 million).

Repair costs from Cyclone Gabrielle are expected to exceed $13 billion.

“We are extremely grateful to the Wanaka A&P Show for the generous donation – it is truly humbling to receive the support,” Worthington adds.

Your views on gambling

We’re proposing changes to the Council policy that aims to limit opportunities for gambling in the district and manage its impact. These relate specifically to electronic gaming machines or ‘pokies’. Anyone can make a submission before Friday 5 May. Have your say at letstalk.qldc.govt.nz

Busy summer for search and rescue volunteers

There’s been a large spike in search and rescue call-outs in the southern region since January, with a significant number thought to have been in the Queenstown Southern Lakes area.

A marked increase in people using personal locator beacons (PLBs) in the outdoors can be partially attributed to the increase in call-outs, but emergency services say post-Covid there are definitely more people exploring the outdoors.

The increase in call-outs for what is a volunteer service has put pressure on Wakatipu SAR in a district plagued by staffing shortages, says local group training officer, Johnny Franklin. While they have a full team of experienced volunteers, it’s getting increasingly difficult for many of them to get away from work or family commitments to attend search and rescue call-outs, he says.

Wakatipu SAR currently has 91 volunteers, including at least one doctor, two ambulance officers, mountain guides, farmers, ski patrollers and tradesmen. However, many are finding it harder to get time of work with employers and businesses already stretched, says Johnny.

“Because of the nature of what’s happening in workplaces employers can’t always find people to replace our volunteers while they’re on a search.” Recently they’ve been unable to meet full requirements on a few occasions and had to put a few less than the usual six teams of three. “Our greatest shortage is team leaders with the necessary experience to go out on the ground and manage the response.” This includes the specialist Alpine Cliff Rescue Team.

One of the biggest operations during the busy summer was the search for missing hunter Murray Horsfield, who died above the Dart River.

Johnny says they’re frequently called to search for people stuck, or ‘bluffed’, high on The Remarkables. In another call-out a hunter got his leg trapped in rock fall above Wye Creek, sparking a helicopter and Fire Service response. SAR bosses say the huge uptake in the use of PLBs is taking the search out of search and rescue with many successful happy endings though, over what was a busy summer in the whole southern region. Unfortunately a large proportion of people locally still don’t carry beacons which greatly reduce rescue times and can save lives.

PLB activations are all picked up by the central Rescue Co-ordination Centre (Maritime NZ) in Wellington which gets an immediate GPS location and has personal details for every registered beacon. They dispatch the appropriate rescue response.

Maritime NZ spokesperson Vince Cholewa says statistics show the number of RCC incidents jumped from about three in the southern region in January to about 32 last month (March), trailing down into April.

NZSAR spokespersonTania Seward says one in three land-based rescues are sparked by PLB activations, compared with one in six five years ago. “They’re more widely available, cheap, and tell rescuers exactly where you are.”

PLB use has really ramped up since 2020 with many lives potentially saved, she says. “Before that people were literally waiting until Mum reports them missing, or they don’t turn up at work.”

“In 90 percent of PLB activations it takes just under eight hours to rescue someone. With no beacon it’s up to 17.5 hours.”

Of 140 lost or missing reports in the southern region from December 1 until February 28, 95 resulted in SAR operations – just over one a day. “A pretty high concentration of these were around the Southern Lakes,” says Tania. Fifty-four were instigated by a PLB or satellite messenger device. The busiest day was January 29 with five, with four each on two other days. “This is a higher proportion than that which we usually see for all of NZ, likely reflecting the more challenging terrain and lack of cell coverage in some pockets around the wider Queenstown Southern Lakes region.”

Graeme Gale, of HeliOtago’s Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter operating out of Queenstown and Dunedin, has seen a “significant increase”, particularly this past summer season, but since Covid restrictions were lifted. “It’s great that people are out biking, climbing and tramping, but with that comes an element of risk and we’re seeing what appears to be a marked increase in beacon activations.” Numbers are even higher than pre-Covid times, he says. “There aren’t many people hunting or in the backcountry now who don’t go without a beacon or emergency location transmitter.” Graeme, who has two machines with dedicated paramedics, pilots and crew based in Queenstown and Taieri 24/7, says they’ve seen some pretty horrific accidents but the increased use of these devices makes for much better outcomes.

Southland’s John Munroe, manager of Locator Beacons NZ, a charitable company launched in the 1990s from Tuatapere, says beacon rentals have gone up 30 to 35 percent since 2020, and sales up by 30 percent. Its PLBs are sold and hired through Macpac stores, i-SITEs, DOC Visitor Centres and some fuel stations.

Our beacons have conservatively rescued more than 800 people in 28 years, about 20 percent of whom wouldn’t have made it otherwise,” says John.

COMMUNITY NOTES

Trail Lovers - Queenstown Trails launches new fundraising campaign

Queenstown Trails has launched a new look fundraising campaign inviting locals – and visitors – to become official Trail Lovers. The campaign that kicked off earlier in the moth replaces the annual Friends of the Trust appeal. The idea with the new campaign is to connect with, and garner support from, all trail users.

“Whether walkers, runners or bikers, we’re asking everyone that loves the trails to join us, and help support our mission to further grow and enhance our incredible trail network,” says Queenstown Trails CEO Mark ‘Willy’ Williams. “This is a great opportunity for the community to show the trails some love. We have big plans and with every dollar donated going directly back into trail expansion and improvement, the more funds raised the more we can do.”

‘Willy’ says The backcountry Coronet Loop, a collaboration with QMBTC to develop Hot Rod and Upper Hot Rod and the revamp of Bush Creek are just a few recent Queenstown Trails projects made possible by community donations.

Other projects underway include the Arthurs Point to Arrowtown trail, Arthurs Point to Tucker Beach and Sunshine Bay to 7Mile. Plans to extend the 12 mile trail, the proposed Kimiakau Bridge over the Shotover and trail infrastructure projects, such as shelter, water stops and toilets, are also on the agenda.

“The Trail Lovers concept is a great fit with our values of Kaitiakitanga, guardianship and protection of the environment, and we hope people will connect with this and make their love for the trails official.”

The Queenstown Trails network consists of more than 180km of commuter trails, single track, flow trails and back country loops; linking communities, enabling experiences and providing positive social, conservation and economic benefits to the region

Film festival to inspire change

A selection of 18 inspiring short films and documentaries will be featured at the first Wao Film Festival in Wanaka next month.

A film inspired Wao co-founders Arna Craig and Monique Kelly to create the sustainability-focused non-profit in 2018 and Arna told the Wanaka App the transformative power of film inspired them to create the new festival.

“Film truly is the best medium for education and inspiration,” she said. The three-day festival, taking place between May 18-21, will combine screenings with guest speaker events.

Critically acclaimed films include ‘Whetu Marama’, an exploration of the ancient wisdom of celestial navigation, and ‘Honeylands’, a quiet and poignant look at the last female bee-hunter in Europe and her age-old Macedonian beekeeping practices.

There’s also Flee, which provides an intimate look into the world of an Afghani migrant in Europe, and Inhabitants, which follows five Native American communities as they restore their traditional land management practices in the face of a changing climate.

Arna said she was most excited for audiences to watch ‘The Ant and the Grasshopper’, which follows Malawian farmer Anita Chitaya as she sets out

Mentoring programme returns to strengthen community governance

A community governance mentoring programme is returning to support and strengthen governance in the non-profit sector across the region. The programme is designed to increase individual’s effectiveness in community governance by developing capability, connection and confidence. Each mentee is matched with a mentor who has substantial not-for-profit governance experience and both will be supported by a programme coordinator. One-on-one support will be available to mentees to help identify personal development priorities with their mentor, who will meet with them approximately once a month to work through a tailored programme of support and advice.

Non-profit organisations across the region provide a range of services that strengthen our communities. Most are governed by a board or committee, who volunteer their time to ensure the organisation runs smoothly and are sustainable. The Governance Mentoring Programme is designed to give volunteers the knowledge and support to grow in their current role and develop aspirations for future opportunities.

The programme commences in June and will run through until late November. Registrations are now open and will close on the 12th May

Do you have a great idea that could help reduce or divert waste from landfill? Now’s your chance to bring it to life with funding from the 2023 councils Waste Minimisation Community Fund.

Applications for the fund open on Friday 14 April 2023 and must be made online and close on 19 May.

“Every year we are inspired by the creative projects put forward to the Waste Minimisation Community Fund, which are all underpinned by a passion to help our district become a sustainable, zero-waste community,” QLDC Waste Minimisation Project Officer Kath Buttar said.

“Last year we supported 13 projects right across the district, including a reusable nappy bank in Glenorchy, an initiative to help teach people to repair, remake and create clothing and soft furnishings from textiles that would otherwise be wasted and a number of composting initiatives to help divert food waste from landfill.

“Over time these will start to make a real difference as more people get involved.” she said.

This year, a funding pool of $50,000 is available for community projects that encourage enduring change in behaviour, and up to $10,000 for commercial waste minimisation or resource recovery projects.

“If your idea supports reducing waste at the source and or diverts material from landfill, we want to hear from you,” Ms. Buttar said. Potential applicants are encouraged to email zerowaste@qldc.govt.nz with any questions or to check if their idea meets the fund’s goals and criteria. Application criteria, profiles of past recipients and other information can be found at www.qldc.govt.nz/wmcf

COMMUNITY

Arts+Culture

Banff returns, ready to inspire

Queenstown Memorial Centre will host the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival next week. The programme features a selection of the most inspiring action, environmental, and adventure films from the original festival, which is held in Banff, Canada, each year.

Around 360 films are entered into the annual festival, which was launched in 1976 as The Banff Festival of Mountain Films by The Banff Centre. Since its humble beginnings it has grown into the largest and most prestigious mountain film festivals in the world. The annual world tour kicks off each year after the completion of the festival held in Autumn in Banff – this year they’ll be stopping at 550 locations across 45 countries.

Jackson Griffith looks after events and communications for the New Zealand Alpine Club, which run the event each year as a fundraiser. Tahuna hosts one of the biggest events on the tour and “is such a big hub for mountain sports, I can imagine the audience down in Queenstown are very much finely tuned into mountain sports in general,” says Jackson.

This year’s films will feature skiing, snowboarding, biking, running, slacklining, and just about any adventure sport you can think of. You’ll also see some common themes running through the films including a strong focus on environmental issues. Each year, the Banff Centre will offer up a selection of their best films out of the 360 submissions to each of the countries that are part of the tour. The Alpine Club also assist in choosing films that will be suited to Kiwi viewers.

“We’ll give our view on what we think best suits the New Zealand audience – what may work on the East Coast of the US might not work so well down here. We have about 30 screenings across New Zealand in 14 towns and cities, so it’s quite a big programme. We’ll, quite appropriately, start in Queenstown on the 3rd of May and then finish up in Auckland on the 29th of June. It will be a nice road trip across the country, visiting the main places. We have top selections from the Banff library of films – they select the best films each year to go on tour. In Queenstown we’re going to have 14 films to show, so there’ll be seven shown each night.”

Each year, the film festival is one of the biggest fundraisers for New Zealand’s Alpine Club. The club encourage mountaineering, rock climbing and allied activities while also have a strong focus on the conservation of the mountain regions. Money from ticket sales each year go back into development projects for the mountain community.

“A great example of that is that we recently relaunched the Aspiring Hut, just near Wanaka, which was a huge redevelopment of that big landmark. Some of the proceeds from last year’s festival went into funding the redevelopment. It’s got a nice theme – some countries, I think, will run their Banff World Tour slightly differently, but for us it’s a non-profit venture where we can channel the money back into mountain development projects.”

The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival will take place at Queenstown Memorial Centre on Wednesday the 3rd and Thursday the 4th of May. You can check out the programme for each night, view trailers for each movie and get tickets at banff.nz

Pint-Sized Plays Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture 2024

Remarkable Theatre’s annual playwriting competition will take place across three days at venues around town from 5 May. The Pint-Sized Plays are live short-format theatre performed in pubs or small venues. They have a small cast and use minimal set, props and tech support. Each year, writers from all over the world submit their short play scripts, which are then performed by no more than three people.

The origin of Pint-size plays goes back to 2008 in Tenby, Wales, and is now considered a premiere international competition for short plays. The audience will get to vote on their preferred script and the winner will be announced at Yonder on Sunday 7 May. Dates, venues and tickets can be found by scanning this QR code.

The Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture, or FESTPAC, is the world’s largest celebration of indigenous Pacific Islanders. It takes place every four years and will head to Hawaii in 2024 after cancellation in 2020 due to Covid-19.

The festival aims to preserve and revive traditional arts and culture of the Pacific, explore new forms of cultural activities suited to the Pacific, create awareness, foster a sense of unity, and promote the development and use of ethnic (indigenous) languages.

The festival will feature activities including live performances, cultural workshops, hands-on demonstrations, film and storytelling. The event will also highlight the urgent issues that Pacific Islanders are facing including rising sea levels and the death of coral reefs, as well as widening social inequality. FESTPAC will take place in Hawaii from 6 - 16 June 2024.

iPhone Photos App features you should be using

Apple has been gradually infusing the iPhone Photos app with powerful features. It’s really much more than the basic default gallery app of old. There are a lot of features you may not know about—here are some of the best.

Search Your iPhone Photos Like a Pro

You probably have hundreds of photos and videos in the Photos app. There is powerful search and filters in the Photos app to help you find what you need. You can simply search for “boat” to bring up all photos of boats, and even search for text that appears in photos.

Delete Location Info from Photos

The Photos app allows you to see location data for photos. This gives you information about which device took the photo, when, and—if you haven’t disabled location—where. You can remove the location data from iPhone photos very easily, which you may want to do before sending photos to people who you don’t want to have your location.

Enable the “Hidden” Photo Album

Look, there are probably some photos and videos that you don’t want just anyone to be able to see on your iPhone. For that, the Photos app has a password-protected “Hidden” album that can be enabled. As an added layer of security, you can even hide the album itself.

Scan Text from Photos

Speaking of identifying things, the iPhone Photos app can also identify text in photos and allow you to copy it. Simply open a photo that contains text, tap the scanning icon in the bottom corner, and watch all the text get highlighted. From there, you can select the text and copy it, look it up, translate, or share.

Find and Delete Duplicate Photos and Videos

Your iPhone only has so much space—and you may not want to shell out for more iCloud storage—which means keeping photos and videos tidy is important. The Photos app has a feature that automatically detects duplicate photos and videos for you to delete. Use this feature to clear out space when you need it. You can access this feature under the Albums tab.

See Which Apps Can Access Your Photos

There are a lot of apps that request access to the photos on your iPhone. It can be downright impossible to remember which apps have access, and some you may not want to have access forever. The good news is you can easily see which apps have photo access in the iPhone’s Privacy settings.

MENTAL health

Top tips for happiness at work when times are tough

With the international day of happiness in the rear view mirror, a lot of us will be reflecting on how we can inject more positive thinking into our lives, particularly in aspects of our life such as work which often can bring stress and negative emotions. For many, it can be hard to attempt to adopt a positive and happy outlook when we are struggling, particularly at work.

Even in the happiest of jobs there will be difficult times and challenges that test our positivity. There are three small changes you can make to try and adopt a more positive outlook to maximise happiness at work.

1. Don’t buy into the ‘fake it till you make it’ myth

Often it can be hard to admit we are struggling, feeling unhappy or insecure. Particularly when it comes to work. It can be tempting to try the ‘fake it till you make it’ tactic and imitate confidence and optimism so that those around us don’t see we are finding things tough. This kind of toxic positivity prevents us from addressing the issues we are struggling with.

Making ourselves happier or more confident when we are struggling is not about affirmations or willpower; we need to change at a neurological and cellular level. We can only do this through accepting what we are feeling and then addressing these feelings appropriately.

If you are feeling under a huge amount of pressure and are not managing your workload, pretending to be coping with it is not helpful for you or your wider team, so being candid and seeking support from a manager is important. Removing the shame away from admitting your real feelings will help stop any negative thoughts spiraling out of control through hiding them and trying to deal with them alone.

2. Address and challenge self limiting beliefs

Often the thoughts and beliefs that make us unhappy don’t come from those around us, but from ourselves.

The unconscious mind’s job is to support our beliefs, whatever they might be. When a belief is installed, which is often by the age of five or six, the unconscious mind doesn’t evaluate it. It accepts that it’s true then goes about looking for evidence to support that belief. The unconscious mind is exceptionally good at finding evidence to reinforce these beliefs, whatever our belief happens to be.

If you believe that you’re hopeless at maths, you’ll only notice the times when you make mistakes, calculate the wrong change in a shop etc. All the times that your maths calculations work perfectly well, will go completely unnoticed. These thoughts are instilled as children but stay with us for all our lives, and will influence our experiences in the workplace if not addressed.

A good place to start when addressing this in the workplace is to try to write a list of the words your colleagues would use to describe you, and the positive comments you have received for pieces of work, your attitude, or the way you make those around you feel in the workplace. Although it may be hard at first, you will begin to think of the way others see you and what they appreciate you for.

3. Focus on what you want rather than worrying about what you don’t want

Humans have around 64,800 thoughts a day and it is estimated that on average 80% of those are negative. This means that most of the time we are focusing our energy on worrying about what we don’t want, and this has a huge impact on the reality that shows up in our life. Our neurology cannot tell the difference between a real experience and a vividly imagined one – so our brain reacts to both just the same. When we spend time worrying about the future and creating imagined scenarios our emotional response feels real because our brain can’t tell the difference. For example, worrying about people’s reactions to your comments in a meeting and what they might be saying about you can allow the brain to create a story that is not real, but that you believe. Instead, try to focus on using this same strategy of imagined scenarios to create confidence in yourself. Instead of worrying about the potential negative outcomes, try to visualise the ideal outcome you want and how good this will feel. Imagine pitching a winning idea in a meeting and your manager being thrilled with your performance. Picture how this outcome would feel and how you would celebrate, then use this to motivate and empower you to be confident and pursue the things you want out of work.

Although finding happiness in challenging times can be hard, being kind to yourself and taking a step back to look into your thought patterns and behaviours can have valuable outcomes that encourage positivity.
