It’s a marathon and a sprint Lining up for the start of the Queenstown half marathon on Saturday, the scale of the problem became apparent.
Stretching about half-a-kilometre along the beautiful tree-lined Speargrass Flat Road, there was a crowded sea of bobbing heads, nervous excited athletes waiting to pass under the arch and start their 21.1km run.
More than 12,000 runners and walkers signed up for the whole event, the full marathon, half, 10km and kids run. It’s a life-affirming occasion with a unique buzz, genuine camaraderie, self-inflicted suffering, grit, joy and relief, brought together by the hundreds of energising volunteers and the kind, fun-filled commentary of Councillor Craig ‘Ferg’ Ferguson at the finish line.
But it hit town in the same week that Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism floated the idea that Queenstown Lakes’ visitor industry could set the revolutionary goal of becoming Carbon Zero by 2030. That’s eight years away. And we’re not talking about dubious off-setting, the aim would be to make the industry itself net zero carbon.
About 90% of the marathoners had travelled from out of town, many flying in from Auckland, and 14% were international. So, as I waited to start the half, hoping Red Bull, UP & GO, new socks and copious amounts of Vaseline would compensate for a lack of training, I looked over the thousands of heads and realised how big the task would be to reach carbon zero. The huge crowd, about 6000 half marathon runners, represented about 0.2% of the three million international and domestic visitors who came to Queenstown the year before Covid hit.
To make the visitor industry carbon zero will be, somewhat literally, as difficult as turning around an oil tanker. It would require a huge commitment to change, through all levels of business, government and community, and embracing technology that is only in its infancy.
The idea is Queenstown Lakes would become a test case for a zero-carbon tourism future, attracting the best and brightest ideas, a first customer for companies focused on reducing emissions, not to mention supercharging local environmental projects, while changing the visitor marketing to target those who don’t have to travel very far, and focusing on yield rather than numbers. Is it achievable? Probably not. Is it enough? Again, probably not. We likely need to radically alter the way world travels and consumes to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees, including making major sacrifices, among them international long-haul holidays.
But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give it a crack. At least it’s visionary, a step in the right direction from Queenstown Inc. and what the majority of the community have been calling for. It could set the wheels in motion for greater change. I can’t see much evidence of the individual behaviour change. Most people are still driving, still consuming, still flying, so an industry-led approach is a good starting point. Hopefully, we can find a way to continue enjoying events like the marathon, while also tackling global warming.

Change of focus for Waterfall Park
By Paul Taylor
A Queenstown property developer has submitted revised plans for a major project at Waterfall Park, near Arrowtown.
Waterfall Park Developments Limited, owned by high-profile developers Chris and Michaela Meehan, was granted consent in 2019 to build a 380-room hotel and spa resort in the valley, near Lake Hayes. But it has now reimagined the development, as a premium retirement / later living complex, with a smaller boutique hotel.
Northbrook Waterfall Park, if approved, will feature three residential buildings containing 148 private residential apartments and a care building containing 12 serviced apartments, 23 high-care units and 13 private residential apartments.
It will also feature an arrivals and amenities building with a pool, gym, reception and café at the southern end of the valley, interfacing with the existing historic Ayrburn Domain immediately to the south, and a 16-room hotel with spa facilities.
Waterfall Park Developments Limited is owned by the Meehan’s main company, Winton, which has developed residential property across Queenstown Lakes and New Zealand, including the huge Northlake subdivision in Wānaka.
Winton’s Queenstown general manager Lauren Christie says the Waterfall Park development is in line with Winton’s overall strategy of creating a premium later living brand ‘Northbrook’. Winton has five locations throughout New Zealand which will be developed into Northbrook.
“Covid related tourism downturn was a factor in the change of use, combined with the forecasted shortfall in the supply of later living options in the region and New Zealand,” Christie says.
“While we still love the original nature-influenced hotel and wellness centre, we also believe Waterfall Park is the perfect backdrop for a premium later living property where residents can enjoy
the outdoors and serenity in their later years.”
Over the course of the multi-year project, the development will cost hundreds of millions of dollars and create hundreds of jobs, she says. But she can’t put a definite timeframe around construction, as it depends on gaining consent.
“It is hard to anticipate the timing of the consenting process. However, we are in a position to commence as soon as consent is received.
“It will be a rolling build program. Once construction starts, it will be an 18 month - two-year build until welcoming the first residents.”
The underlying design philosophy and the design itself remains the same as the approved hotel plans, tweaked to reflect the change to a retirement complex.
“We are excited to share the Waterfall Park Northbrook vision and believe this outcome is a silver lining to the pandemic-driven change in market dynamics.”

Zero carbon Queenstown tourism economy?
By Paul Taylor
Queenstown’s tourism industry could set the radical goal of reaching ‘Carbon Zero by 2030’.
That’s one of the proposals in the resort’s revised regenerative tourism strategy, which has been strengthened after feedback on the draft plan from the community and operators.
It’s the work of marketing organisations Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism, backed by Queenstown Lakes District Council.
DQ chief executive Mat Woods presented the plan to councillors, tourism operators and members of the public at a series of meetings last week.
There were audible gasps in the audience in Wednesday’s meeting when he unveiled the carbon-zero goal and slogan.
The next step is for the industry and community to debate whether it should actually become the focus of its efforts.
“We know this is ambitious but we think tourism can actually do good, and change and help this environment,” Woods said.
The plan could see Queenstown Lakes become a world leader in tourism decarbonisation, a ‘first customer’ for emerging technologies, such as carbon capture, electric helicopters and the like.
Tourism operators would also have to embrace change, taking individual responsibility for net zero by 2030, without off-setting.
Business owners, local politicians and industry leaders would be tasked with lobbying on a national level for the changes to legislation, energy infrastructure and funding required.
Sowry says there’s billions of dollars of investment going towards new technologies, such as hydrogen-powered and electric aircraft.
Electric aircraft, due to the physics, would likely only fly as far as Christchurch, whereas hydrogen could provide a short-haul alternative within the next 1015 years.
“Long haul, given the location we have at the bottom of the world, is a serious nut to crack,” Sowry says.
Sustainable aviation fuel is the likely the only viable solution in the short to medium term, he says. That can reduce GHG emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle, compared to jet fuel.
Rodney Payne, CEO of consultants Destination Think, which has worked on the plan, says the organisations realised it was difficult to get people excited about the goal of becoming ‘regenerative by 2030’.
“Because it’s hard to know what that really means,” he says.
“When we looked at all the projects, we were thinking is there one that we can elevate to start with, that everyone knows what it means... and we were pretty sure you can’t be regenerative without decarbonising.
“Focusing on decarbonisation first, it forces you to go to the root of the issue.”
Payne says Queenstown could become known as the Silicon Valley of decarbonising tourism, adopting ground-breaking technology and clean energy solutions.
It could also look to manage the number of tourists, focusing on revenue, yield and margin, rather than bums on seats, and also change the visitor mix, appealing to tourists who don’t have to travel too far, as there are more emissions from those coming from farther away.
The net carbon-zero goal would include tackling ‘scope 3’ emissions, the emissions from tourists actually getting to Queenstown, he says.
That’s likely to be a sticking point, with Queenstown Airport Corporation forecasting passenger numbers (arrivals and departures) could grow to 3.2 million by 2032.
QAC chief executive Glen Sowry, at Wednesday’s meeting, said the councilcontrolled company is “very supportive” of the aspiration.
“The reality is that aviation, much as we would love it to be, will not be carbon zero by 2030, when you think of scope 3 emissions,” Sowry says.
“The positive thing is airlines and aircraft manufacturers the world over recognise this is an existential problem. If they don’t solve it, their ability to function and operate into the future is going to come under enormous threat and pressure.”
Earlier this month, Air New Zealand announced it plans to begin replacing its turbo-prop planes (Q300s) with more sustainable aircraft – likely green hydrogen or battery hybrid systems – from 2030. Meanwhile, locally, RealNZ, has announced plans to make the TSS Earnslaw more sustainable, investigating alternative fuels for the coal-powered twin-screw steamer. The three possibilities are wood pellets, biofuel (gas / diesel) or hydrogen. Only hydrogen would be zero-carbon, although all would produce fewer emissions than coal. The 110-year-old ship is one of the biggest single polluters in Queenstown, according to Otago Regional Council’s GHG Emission Inventory.
Queenstown Lakes District had one of the highest rates of gross emissions per capita in New Zealand pre-Covid, at 18.5 tonnes per resident of “carbon dioxide equivalent” (CO2e).
That’s due to the millions of tourists who descend on Queenstown and Wānaka each year, although the figure, from a council-commissioned Tonkin + Taylor 2018 study, does not include emissions from international flights.
Moving towards a regenerative model has been prompted by Central Government, who provided Strategic Assets Protection Programme (STAPP) funding to regional tourism organisations during the pandemic, to create new plans. It’s also an off-shoot of Queenstown Lakes’ Spatial Plan.
The first draft was released in July, after seven design forums, 50 one-on-one meetings and eight community workshops.
It has been viewed by 1800 people online, downloaded 600 times and received 33 pieces of detailed feedback from individuals and organisations. Along with the headline grabbing zero carbon plan, the strategy has also been streamlined to three pillars to help Queenstown ‘travel to a thriving future’.
Pillar one is ‘enrich communities and enhance the visitor experience’; pillar two is ‘foster a visitor economy that restores the environment’; and pillar three is ‘build economic resilience, capability and productivity’. There are 21 projects across the three pillars.
The plan also has guiding principles: building communities, enabling regeneration, demonstrating leadership, working together and embracing change. And it sits with in a Kāi Tahu values framework.
The final strategy will be implemented as a partnership between Destination Queenstown (DQ), Lake Wānaka Tourism (LWT), Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), Kāi Tahu and the Department of Conservation.

“As an aspiration, it’s absolutely brilliant. It reminds me of JFK’s famous speech, ‘before this decade is out... we’ll land a man on the Moon’. And then, of course, it happened. It’s the right thing to put out there, and in the process of trying to achieve it, a lot of things can be accomplished.
“It’s a major project, highly ambitious and a lot of change is required. There is technology being developed, whether EVs, hydrogen fuel cells, but then it comes down to the commercial and practical steps needed implement it.
“For businesses like ours, we have asset lifecycle management practices, different machines and pieces of equipment that need to be replaced over time. Each time that happens, the opportunity arises to do that in a way that has a lower environmental footprint or zero emissions profile. If you apply that across all the businesses in our sector and region, and layer it, then there’s a bunch of stuff that will naturally evolve in that direction, and then there will be some things that need a bit of a shove, based upon capability, technological readiness or energy supply.
“Things like hydrogen or electric coaches from Queenstown to Te Anau, the technology exists and mathematically that works, but it comes down to where are you going to get your hydrogen or electricity from, and who’s going to build that infrastructure. Individual tourism operators are unlikely to suddenly get into the hydrogen manufacture industry, so there needs to be a broader conversation at a regional level that lends itself to solving some of those bigger challenges.
“Like the Moon landing, it needs a collaboration of many parts of the economy to make it work.”
The plan could see Queenstown Lakes become a world leader in tourism decarbonisation, a ‘first customer’ for emerging technologies, such as carbon capture, electric helicopters and the like.

“I do feel that there is a genuine desire in the tourism industry to do better. But I think at some point, we need to be realistic.
“Regenerative tourism actually is an oxymoron, especially if we are talking about international tourism. New Zealand’s international flights are the equivalent of 10 to 12% of the national emissions, roughly around 10 megatons per year.
“To stay within 1.5 degrees of warming, the global carbon budget would allow 5 million humans to emit 170 megatons of carbon, so NZ’s international aviation alone would use our whole budget in 17 years.
“The only sustainable option for the tourism industry is to scale down and to focus on domestic tourism alongside a decarbonisation of our national transport systems.
“Carbon capture systems already exist but, besides the environmental cost of manufacturing these systems, they use a lot of energy. We would need a lot of excess renewable electricity to power them which of course we don’t have.
“Actually, the only working technology we have to remove carbon from the atmosphere are trees... but then we need to consider land use. Forests have been replaced by farmland.
“It’s positive that the industry wants to do better but we need to make some choices. Do we want a few more years of economic growth through international tourism or do we want a liveable future?”
Paul Anderson NZSki chief executive
“It’s laudable to have a goal like that and I think it’s very achievable for us as a resort to get to carbon zero. It’s the right thing to do for Destination Queenstown to take a strong position, a leadership position, not just in this region, but in the industry. It’s excellent.
“The important thing for us as operators as we go forward is to invest in the technology that will produce emission reductions, rather than just rely on offsets.
“It’s a massive challenge but there are some answers. There are carbon zero fuels starting to be produced. Our grooming fleet is our biggest emitter, so that’s where our focus needs to be. We have a modern fleet and the tier five engines we use in all the modern machinery are able to take a fuel called HVO, which is a zero-carbon fuel [Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, biofuel].
“It’s starting to be produced in commercial quantities in Europe, so a we need to see if we can get an energy company to supply it. That will need some national cooperation, support from Government, when you look at things like shipping and storage, the infrastructure.
“Most of our electricity is from renewable sources, our coaches remove cars from the road, and this year alone we’ve invested about $2 million worth of upgrades to our snowmaking equipment, which will improve the efficiency. It’s all those things that add up to contribute to that goal.”
David Gatward-Ferguson Nomad Safaris owner / operator
“It’s an exciting plan. We’ve been looking at ways to reduce emissions from our fleet and hopefully this will mean there’s some money available for research, because it’s not straight-forward at all.
“There are no vehicles we can buy that we can use for our operations, because they don’t have a large enough range. Electrification isn’t an option because the technology is just not up to doing what we do.
“We need to be able to carry six to eight people in each vehicle. If you look at our Tesla, it’s not an off-road vehicle, and it takes a maximum of three customers and a driver. So that makes the price per seat prohibitive and would price out most of our market. And electric vehicles don’t like hills. If you go from the bottom of the Remarkables to the top, driving carefully in the Tesla, you use 63km’s worth of electricity.
“The electric vans available have a lower range. A trip to Glenorchy just eats the juice, because it’s windy and hilly, so you’re on and off the accelerator all the time. So, a van would get to the other side of Glenorchy and there they would stay because Glenorchy doesn’t have the electrical infrastructure to put in fast chargers, like many places in the country.
“It’s aspirational but impractical at the moment.”

Marathon back on track
By Paul Taylor
The oldest competitor in the field was 87-year-old Queenstown local David Graham, who finished the half marathon in 3:06:04.
David was taking part in his fourth Queenstown Marathon having only started running in his eighties when the event came to his hometown.
“It’s really the family that makes me want to do this, we’ve got grandchildren running the kids run, we’ve got one of our sons doing the marathon, another son is doing the half and also my grandson did the half as well,” he said.
“The course is absolutely brilliant and what makes it so special is that everyone is so friendly and encouraging and you can hear the cheers which makes all the difference, good old Queenstown puts on a special show.”
Thousands of Queenstowners turned out to cheer on the runners and walkers, with the event returning after the two-year Covid-hiatus.
Sponsored by New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty, it is expected to bring an estimated $20 million into the local economy.
Entries have already opened for next year.

Former winners Daniel Jones and Hannah Oldroyd continued their fine run of form by taking out the 2022 Queenstown Marathon titles.
Wellington based Jones, three weeks on from his historic Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Marathon, took the tape in 2hrs 27 mins 02sec.
“A marathon is always hard work but to be back in Queenstown racing again is awesome, it was amazing, it was pretty perfect conditions, a little bit windy but we had such good crowd support, and when it comes down to it racing is racing so that’s what drove us home in the end,” Jones said.
Like Jones, Christchurch-based Hannah Oldroyd also backed up her recent Auckland Marathon win in claiming her third Queenstown Marathon title, repeating her 2018 and 2020 success.
Oldroyd finished in 2:53:44.
“It was really unexpected, I’ve had a bit of a rough week, so it was all about energy management and survival so yeah, over the moon,” she said.
“The support was awesome; it always is out here. There were way more hills than I remembered, I’m sure they’ve put a new one in under a bridge somewhere and up the other side, but the support was great.”
Auckland triathlete Jack Moody made it back-to-back wins in the La Roche Posay Half Marathon, winning the 2022 event two years on from when it was last held in 2020.
In the women’s half marathon it was Sydney-based Brit Amy Cogle who took the win.
While the elite athletes took the tape, there were thousands of runners who had to dig just as deep across the four distances, the 422km marathon, the 21.2km half, the 10km and 2.2km kids run.

Running for a reason
By Jessica Allen
Queenstowner
both raise awareness about the disease and also raise money for the charity – so far he’s raised over $11,000.
Bradley, who originally hails from Invercargill, studied in Dunedin and now calls Queenstown home. A keen cricketer, he really enjoys the lifestyle that Queenstown offers. It was just before the first lockdown when he moved back home that he noticed an ulcer on his tongue – he didn’t think much of it and was admittedly a bit stubborn to go to the doctor.
“Over the lockdown I just noticed a gradual decrease in my speech and the ability to eat and swallow. Then lockdown lifted and I went back to Dunedin for the semester one exams. I didn’t really sleep for a couple of weeks because of the pain that I was in – I was trying to study as well, which was a bit hectic. Then I sat my exams and I was given the time to deal with it all.
“Prior to that I was pretty stubborn and a bit naive – just a classic uni student thinking ‘it’ll come right.’ I went to the doctor and they gave me antibiotics and some cream and said to come back if that didn’t clear it up. I went back in two weeks and it probably just made it a wee bit worse,” says Bradley.
He was then referred on where he received a biopsy, and a few days later he received the news that it was cancer.
“I then drove down to Dunedin where I had to have CAT scans, MRI scans, CT scans, and all my wisdom teeth had to be taken out, even though they probably weren’t ready to be taken out.”
Bradley was given two options, to either cut it out, which would leave him struggling to talk or eat for the rest of his life, or to try chemotherapy and radiation, which had a 50% chance of success. He chose the chemotherapy route, which luckily worked for him. Bradley describes the physical and mental impact of his treatment as something he never could have imagined, but that he now has a new perspective and appreciation for seemingly simple things such as talking, eating and being able to taste. He also has a greater appreciation for life and what we have the ability to do.
Those diagnosed with head and neck cancers can face intense treatment and surgeries, both of which have short- and long-term implications on the individuals life, as well as a toll on their loved ones. Having experienced this himself, and understanding the hurdles those with head and neck cancers have to face, Bradley wanted to participate in the marathon to support those confronted with the disease.
“I thought, what better way to fundraise and raise awareness than to run a marathon and hopefully make things easier for friends, family and direct patients who have to deal with it, and just make it a bit easier for them, whether it be support or processing their food better.”
Bradley said that completing the marathon was “pretty surreal and quite a cool feeling.” A little sore, just as most people were when they finished, he’s pretty happy with how it all went and is especially appreciative of all the friends and family that supported him both on the day and over the past couple of years.
“The first half was fine and then when I realised it was only halfway I got a wee bit negative. Then I had a second wave of energy come through, which was quite nice and got me through the last 10k or so. I probably wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the support of my friends and family. Doing the race, it was more for them and other people who are going through something similar.”
Bradley’s Give A Little Page was sitting at $11,259 on Monday morning and is still open – you can read more about Bradley’s story and donate at givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/ queenstown-marathon-2021-fundraiser-for-head

The Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT) has received title for its first 18 permanently affordable housing sections at the Longview development at Lake Hāwea.
A total of 58 sections have been gifted to the Trust by Longview developer Lane Hocking, representing a contribution of 12.5% of total sections and developed land in the 464-section subdivision. It’s the largest contribution percentage from a single development in the Queenstown Lakes District since the inclusionary housing requirement was introduced by Queenstown Lakes District Council almost 20 years ago.
The value received from these contributions (land or cash) is invested into QLCHT’s award-winning Secure Home scheme, or one of its affordable rental programmes. The properties form a housing stock which is held for the Queenstown Lakes District community in perpetuity.
“Another aspect of this what makes this contribution significant is that Lane front-loaded his requirements to the Trust – meaning that twice the number of sections have been released up front in Stage 1, enabling us to move quickly with the building process,” QLCHT executive officer Julie Scott says. “We’ll receive the sections as soon as title is released, allowing us to build affordable housing faster for local households on our waiting list. It’s a really great example of a collaboration between a private developer, the council and QLCHT and is ultimately a fantastic outcome for the community.”
Hocking says: “Gifting the sections to the Housing Trust was one of the quid pro quos of getting the Longview development across the line in 2017 and I’m very proud that we’ve been able to do this. It means we’re able to help QLCHT get locals into housing that will remain permanently affordable, being held in community ownership.”
Longview, accessed off Cemetery Road, is a low-density residential subdivision comprising 464 sections between 300-600sq m in size. It will also include a playground, café and connect to many of the established walking and cycle trails nearby. Some 310 sections have been sold so far.
QLCHT will build a mix of one- to four-bedroom homes, catering to senior residents, singles and families on low- to mid-incomes. The 58 households will be a mix of Secure Home and the Trust’s three rental programmes. Construction of community housing is expected to start this month.

Artemis 1 Blasts Off
NASA’s Artemis 1 rocket successfully lifted off last Wednesday, in the agency’s fourth attempt to launch the uncrewed spacecraft for a 2.09 million-km mission around the moon and back to Earth.
The $US4.1B mission, a combination of the Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft, was initially scheduled to launch in August but was delayed by technical issues and Hurricanes Ian and Nicole. It marks the first use of the SLS and is seen as a precursor to possible human travel farther into space. The mission will take 25 days, primarily due to the moon’s position—the solar-powered spacecraft cannot be in the moon’s shadow for longer than 90 minutes or it risks losing power. Artemis 2, scheduled for 2024, will send a crewed vehicle on the same flyby, while Artemis 3 is tentatively set to return humans to the moon’s surface in 2025.
New Banksy Works Emerge Among the Destruction in Ukraine
Banksy has been traveling through the battle-scarred streets of Ukraine, producing a slew of works directly confronting Russia’s aggression. The elusive street artist’s signature stencils have been spotted among the rubble of bombed buildings and barricades in Borodyanka and Gorenka, both in the Bucha Region, while others are just outside the capital city of Kyiv. Each centers on the strength and resiliency of the Ukrainian people.
The works broadly criticize the ongoing war and its disastrous effects on the everyday lives of citizens, depicting a woman outfitted with hair rollers, a bathrobe, and a gas mask grasping a fire extinguisher, a bearded man scrubbing his back in an open-air bathtub, and silhouettes of young children teeter-tottering on a left-behind hunk of steel.

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Rules With $US330 Million Global Launch
Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” dominated the US domestic box office in its debut weekend, earning $180 million and providing a much-needed lift to beleaguered cinemas. The sequel demolished the record for a November opening in North America, soaring past the previous high-water mark of $158 million set by 2013’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” Globally, the superhero adventure netted a spectacular $US330 million with $US150 million of that figure coming from 55 overseas markets.

Women’s sports recently triumphed in more ways than one, with the Black Ferns win over England in the Rugby World Club championship. A record crowd attended the televised match and thousands more tuned in to watch the team create history.
It is pleasing to see our women athletes get the accolades they rightly deserve! The joyful celebrations were welcome at a time when spirits are low as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite.
It is unfair that the Government is quietly harvesting a bumper tax from everyone just because inflation is pushing everyone into higher tax brackets. Their tax revenue for 2022 was a whopping $107.9 billion, up from $97.4 billion in 2021.
An income of $70,000 today is worth the same thing as $64,000 in April 2021. At the same time, $63,000 today is worth about the same as $48,000 in 2010. National’s plan is to adjust the tax brackets so that people can keep more of their money in their pocket, that is the sensible option.
As a follow-up to our public meeting on the lack of postal services in Hanley’s Farm, I have arranged to meet with RCL Group, NZ Post members, Council and community representatives to further explore options on the table. It is disappointing that the Ministers responsible for NZ Post continue to shirk their responsibilities in ensuring that residents get the postal services they are entitled to.
I’ve been receiving queries about the lack of affordable accommodation in the Queenstown-Lakes area. Labour was warned that their changes to the Brightline test for property investment and interest deductibility for landlords would result in costs being piled on to renters. National will repeal those changes.
On a positive note, I recently hosted a Catalysing the OtagoSouthland Space Industry event in Queenstown, supported by an incredible line-up of speakers, Coincidently, it took place while the CAPSTONE spacecraft (launched five months ago from Mahia Peninsula by Rocket Lab) entered the Moon’s orbit. It was a historic step in the journey to return humans to the moon. Our meeting was successful by all accounts, and I look forward to hosting similar discussions in the new year.
We also joined Rocket Lab’s Space Ambassador programme visiting schools in the district. It’s an educational programme that aims to inspire future generations into further education and career pathways in STEM industries. The questions from the kids were incredible, highlighting an amazing depth of pre-existing knowledge, interest, and passion for Space.
It was encouraging to see Atamari fostering creativity in the Basin during the recent writer’s festival that brought together writers and readers to celebrate the written word.
If you took part in the Queenstown marathon, I do hope you enjoyed it! Events such as these are incredibly important for businesses in town and the economic prosperity of our community.
Crankworx mountain bike festival dates confirmed
By The Wānaka App
The world’s biggest and most influential mountain bike festival will return to the Southern Lakes next year.
Queenstown, Wānaka, Cardrona and other nearby locations will play host to Crankworx Summer Series, which includes 12 days of world-class mountain bike racing between February 28 and March 12.
Racing will begin in Alexandra (February 28-March 1) before the ‘dual slalom’ in Wānaka (March 4-5), the ‘downhill’ at Cardrona (March 7-9) and the ‘pump track’ in Queenstown (March 11-12).
The series will give local and up-and-coming riders a chance to race with national and international professionals.
The summer series format brings a taste of the Crankworx action tonew riding destinations outside the Crankworx World Tour, organisers said.
Spectators will be welcomed at all events and Crankworx has also moved some mid-week racing into the evening to give locals the chance to come out and be part of the action after work hours.
It will be the second time the Crankworx Summer Series has taken place in Queenstown Lakes.
Lake Wānaka Tourism said the 2021 series helped to raise the profile of the world class biking and cycling available in the Upper Clutha.
Crankworx was one of 20 events to receive funding from Queenstown Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) events fund earlier this year.
The events fund is designed to support events which bring substantial benefits to the local community.

“The flow-on effects of these events are great for local communities as well as bringing people to the district, raising our profile, and supporting the economy,” QLDC arts and events relationship manager Jan Maxwell said. “These events really contribute to the vibrancy of Queenstown Lakes.” More details of the Crankworx Summer Series will be shared in the coming months.

Te Atamira highlights plastic pollution
by Jessica Allen
International award-winning British photographer Mandy Barker will bring her SHELF-LIFE exhibition to Te Atamira over December and January. The exhibition will highlight the impact of the global reliance on plastic and the damage it causes to marine life, and has been brought here in partnership with the British Council and the British High Commission.
Mandy is an award-winning photographer who aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. In 2019 a team of scientists discovered large amounts of plastic at the uninhabited and isolated Henderson Island. The island is part of the Pitcairn Islands and is a UNESCO World Heritage site – Mandy wanted to highlight the environmental threat. She photographed pieces of the debris, which was made up of at least 45 recognisable brands from 25 different countries.
“People can expect ten extraordinary photographs taken by Mandy Barker. She collected pieces of plastic debris and has constructed these beautiful photos. The viewer is provoked by what they see in front of them and you have this startling awareness that it’s not natures objects or fish, but it’s actually plastic. You have this quite emotional response to the beauty of the photographs but the objects in them being rubbish that’s found its way almost halfway around the world,” says Olivia Egerton, Director at Te Atamira.
The show came about when Natasha Beckman, Director of the British Council for New Zealand and the Pacific, reached out to Te Atamira when she heard it was under construction. What really caught the attention of Olivia and the team at Te Atamira is that the plastic all came from a UNESCO World Heritage site.
“In Queenstown we don’t often think of this but the Fiordland National Park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is not that far away. That really rang for us, that from a local point of view there is this connection to the World Heritage sites but also the reality of the fact we live in this incredibly beautiful environment in Queenstown and often we don’t realise what’s happening not so far away.”
In addition to Mandy’s work, some local artists will also be involved. Shane Woolridge is a sculptor based in Arrowtown who will be doing an installation in the entrance of Te Atamira as a response to Mandy’s global work. He’s also collected some debris to create his work, a lot of which is inspired by the landscape and the materials he’s found. Andy Regan will also be constructing three sculptures out of different plastics. The sculptures will be seaweeds that will be attached to one another.
All the art on display will highlight the world’s waste issues and the thought is to challenge individuals to think about how we can tackle the issue and be more sustainable. “Some of these issues are related to international conversation and are very valid in lots of different places.”
SHELF-LIFE will be on display in WHAKAARI, Te Atamira from 30 November until 24 January 2023. For more information head to teatamira.nz
Living in Central Otago is expensive. We’re miles from anywhere. We predominantly grow grapes, cherries; there’s a few sheep, some cows; and a tiny but growing crew of market gardeners.
Our busy lives disconnect us from the earth, but growing veggies reconnects us to the life source. Plus, it can be an inexpensive way to get healthy, nutritious food. So, get out there and start a veggie garden: there is no greater joy than picking and eating home-grown veggies!
To help your veggies grow, you don’t need to buy expensive compost from a shop. We all have a continuous supply of nutrients coming out of our home that we can capture and use to fertilise our veggie gardens for free or nearly free.
1. Trench composting. It’s simple and costs nothing. Dig a trench in your veggie garden and put ALL your veggie scraps in there. Bones, bread, the lot! Shred up some brown cardboard, dampen and mix in with the veggie scraps. Cover with 20 to 30cm of soil and you’re ready to go.
2. Bokashi Buckets. There’s an initial outlay of around $50 (they’re subsidised at 2 for the price of 1 from QLDC). Then, every four months it’s $10 for another bag of magic dust. Bokashi is trench composting on steroids, just without the zits
and mood swings! E.M.(effective microorganisms) are used in this system, speeding decomposition and inoculating the soil with heaps of beneficial biology. ‘I love Bokashi’ stickers are available from me…
3. Worm chimneys. Drill multiple holes into a repurposed/bought (HDPE No 2 plastic) 20 litre bucket or 50 litre bin, cut out the bottom and bury up to the lid in your veggie garden. Buy some compost worms and put in approximately 500 grams of tiger worms (again subsidised by QLDC). Three to five of these units would deal with a family of four’s food scraps. Add food scraps and damp shredded cardboard alternating between buckets. Once a year, or when full, harvest the vermicompost. The worms will be at the top and can be set aside and put back in once empty.
4. Urine. We’re peeing a great resource all day! Urine is a free fertiliser. Collect in a bucket, dilute it in a watering can and use around your veggies and fruit trees. Top tip: don’t store urine for too long as it will start to pong.

COMMUNITY NOTES
Cancer Support is available in Queenstown
Every day, New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. Being diagnosed with cancer can be one of the most challenging situations a person will ever face. The Cancer Society provides one-on-one free emotional and practical support to cancer patients, their family/whānau and friends.
Marie Wales, Supportive Cancer Manager, reinforces that message. “Our healthcare support team is available if you or someone you know has cancer. We help navigate the foreign world of medical information, we make the time to listen, to work out what is needed and how we can ensure individuals and their whānau have the information they need to make decisions that are right for them”.
“We can advocate on your behalf so you are not alone in ensuring you are getting the best care possible. As we live in the community, we can recommend other services that we can connect you with to assist in other aspects of your life during this time. Care may include counselling services, local practical community support or assistance with the Ministry of Health, travel and accommodation subsidies, wigs and breast prosthetics”.
The Cancer Society’s community-based team works to connect anyone with cancer with others in the community so you can share your experiences in a supportive environment if that’s something of interest. Anyone requiring treatment away from home, we can assist with accommodation either staying at Daffodil House, the societies home
away from home, when receiving treatment in Dunedin or other accommodation.
The Cancer Society services are free and if you need support don’t hesitate to contact local Cancer Society Supportive Care Team Member, Janeen Holmes either on 021 465 746 or email Janeen.holmes@cansoc.org.nz
Blue Stories Project – Queenstown Road Closure
The Blue Stories Project is an exhibition of portraits alongside inspiring and encouraging stories of how people found their way out of perinatal depression.
The Blue Stories Project was initiated in 2021 in Nelson by illustrator and designer, Karolina Gorton, and Perinatal Support Nelson. This year the project has expanded its reach and includes Queenstown. Stories from our region along with pop-art style portraits created by Karolina will be exhibited from the 19th of November to the 16th of December at Frankton Library.
The Blue Stories Project’s Queenstown/ Otago coordinator, CLFS’s Lisa Gear, says of her work in the perinatal support sector that “We’re doing connecting work, creating a village sort of environment. This is quite uplifting work, it keeps you going.” The exhibition’s opened last Saturday and there are Support Sessions being held on Wednesdays, 23rd & 30th November and 7th & 14th December at 11.30am-12.00pm. These sessions are an opportunity for people to get together with the team from Central Lakes Family Services to make connections with each other and the support services available.

SH6 Jacks Point Intersection – Resurfacing
There will be an overnight closure of SH6 near the intersection with Jack Hanley Dr on Thursday 24 November, 9pm-5am whilst resurfacing work is underway.
The road will open at least once an hour to allow any queued traffic through. Plan your journey accordingly and expect up to one-hour delays waiting for the road to reopen.
In the likelihood of bad weather, these works may be postponed at short notice.

The inaugural festival called Roam Central will centre on its flagship event – the Roam the Valley Wine & Food Festival – to be held at Cargo Cellar Door in the Gibbston Valley on Saturday, January 28.
A programme of events will wrap around the festival theme and include Roam Together a programme of master classes and cellar door tastings, Roam Around Town a collaborations between local restaurants and wineries and Roam The Vines a one-of-a-kind relaxed brunch exclusively sitting in the vineyards of selected wineries on Sunday, January 29.
The Roam the Valley Wine & Food Festival is the inspiration of the Central Otago Winegrowers’ Association to shine the spotlight on the produce coming from the region – its terroir, local product, flavours and its people – in new, diverse and engaging ways, COWA event manager Jo Brown explains.
“We’ve created an event based around themes of discovery and connection to share our love of life in Central Otago and the Southern Lakes. Our wine region is regarded as one of the best in the world, and we want to throw our doors wide open and celebrate it. Roam Central is an amazing opportunity to invigorate the local industry and will be a drawcard for wine lovers beyond our region,” she says.
Roam the Valley Wine & Food Festival will be a relaxed, welcoming affair with live music, and a focus on the wine being the main drawcard.
Roam the Valley Wine & Food Festival comprises four anchor events between January 26-29, 2023.
Roam Together (Pinot Central) dates are January 27-29: A programme of events that includes master classes, cellar door tastings, cooking demonstrations, a Virtual Roam, ticketing and transport hub.
Roam Around Town (Wine & Dine) across January 26-28: Participating
Roam the Valley Wine & Food Festival is being held at the picturesque grounds at Cargo Cellar Door in Gibbston, the festival is a ticketed event for up to 3000 people and includes themed zones with seating and entertainment.
Roam the Vines (Brunch in the Vineyards) on January 29: Selected local vineyards will host a relaxed brunch among the vines to wrap up the fourday celebration.

KC WILSON
RIVER MAN
You could say he’s somewhere between a Southern Man with a big heart and New Zealand’s own version of Bear Grylls, but KC Wilson is probably his own unique version of icon.
After all, who else can wipe out a possum, pluck it, skin it and roast it up in butter on a backcountry fire, tempting even the most reluctant hungry teenagers to tuck in and give it a try.
Born in Rangiora, North Canterbury, in 1976 KC grew up on his parent’s lifestyle block, roaming the hills on his uncles’ farms, hunting and fishing from a young age.
Cricket was his passion, representing North Canterbury until the age of 13 or 14.
Several bad concussions playing rugby and basketball forced him off the field for a few years and after the family moved to Nelson, KC discovered whitewater kayaking at Waimea College. “I picked apples one summer at 15 and bought my own kayak, joining the Nelson Canoe Club.” Now one of Queenstown’s most accomplished veteran rafting and kayaking guides, KC credits Waimea College teachers Marcus Swain and Ian Barnes with pushing him to be who he’s become. “They taught us safety, loaned us kids kayaks, rifles and fishing rods and let us go for it.”
The indoor classroom wasn’t for KC.
“Half a dozen of us boys got asked nicely to leave school,” grins KC, still unsure if he was just a bit too energetic for school. They were offered a certificate course in forest harvesting through the local Polytechnic. KC’s first love was outdoor adventure, however, ironically his applications to further this at Mt Aspiring College and Tai Poutini Polytechnic were declined, so forestry it was.
That was until, at 20, KC met long-time Queenstown Serious Fun River Surfing founder Jon Imhoof while river-boarding in Murchison. “They saw me on the river and were like, ‘Holy Moly! We didn’t know anybody did boogie boarding on rivers up here!” says KC.
That led to a role river-surf guiding on the Zambezi River in Africa for Serious Fun for four seasons from 1996. Here he earned his nickname KC - ‘Kiwi Chap’. “It’s a massive, huge river – Grade 5 – the best in the world.” Senior guides from Queenstown trained him up over there, but most of his close calls were off the water. “I got chased by a crocodile once, and charged by an elephant.”
His first season he guided river surfing and kayaking trips, advancing to rafting, from August until February.
In the second season KC met long-time partner and fellow outdoor adventurer, Australian Gabby Campbell-Lloyd, half his size, but equally as gutsy.
In 2000 he headed back to New Zealand to forestry for a bit, before he and Gabby guided on the Tully River in her homeland, Northern Queensland. Seasons were also spent guiding rafting and canyoning trips in Switzerland, Chile, Canada, and rowing equipment boats for Grand Canyon rafting expeditions in 2012.
“It’s a really, really nice way to travel the world,” says KC. “If it rained in Chile we were stuck in the village so got to know the locals, language and culture.” KC admits you “learn as you go”. “We’ve butchered a few sheep and goats in Chile just to survive. The clients think it’s great – a bit of lamb or chicken on the fire. It’s real.”
Real adventure is what people want, he says. Full-time rafting guide for Queenstown Rafting since 2004 and outdoor instructor for Wakatipu High School’s legendary Branches Camps for 16 years, KC says his two greatest role models have been boss Guido Leek and school head of outdoor recreation Ken McIntyre. “They’re absolutely amazing people. They taught me how important it is to teach kids about the outdoors.” He’s now paying that forward at Branches, on the Greenstone and Year 9 Journeys camps for the school, his great sense of humour popular with the kids. “Someone taught me for free. It’s the unwritten rule of river rafting,” says KC. Ironically, he’s instructing for Tai Poutini in Murchison and on the Rangitata River, and guiding Auckland kids down the Whanganui River.
He’s lost a few close friends on the river. “That goes with the territory, but they loved life and died where they wanted to be. I always tell junior guides, ‘You’re training for yourselves and to look after each other.”
There have been some close calls – one client jammed under a rock on the Tully River, others floating off face down after medical events, but all were revived by guides. KC’s broken ribs, his coxis, split open his chin and, excruciatingly, tore his anus on a raft seat.
Most amusing was the British client on the Zambezi who refused to get back in the righted raft for KC after a flipping, with a massive rapid approaching. “If you didn’t flip the raft you were out of a job. I yelled, ‘Mate! You’ve got to get back in the boat!’ He said, ‘No!No! Don’t pull me in! I’ve lost my shorts!’”
The safety kayaker had to rescue the modest, pale-skinned Brit, paddle him ashore, and give him his own shorts.
After 10 overseas seasons KC and Gabby bought 16ha (40 acres) at Miller’s Flat, their home and escape, where they work the land and live self-sufficiently, commuting to Queenstown. While KC teaches kids how to survive on wild meat, he and Gabby raise, hunt and kill all their own meat, have massive veggie gardens and use sustainable solar energy with a wetback stove. “We’re totally off the grid and eco-friendly.”
A holiday for these two means heading into the mountains between Haast and the Hollyford, during the roar, hunting for up to 17 days. “That’s our time out.”
