JOBS INSIDE
Well, it looks like we made it! Well largely anyway Our borders are to open to Australians at midnight on 12 April and to a large part of the rest of the world, in the form of the Visa Waiver countries, at midnight on 1 May. It can’t come soon enough. In the case of the Australians, the open date precedes Easter and the Australian school holidays so we should see a reasonable amount of Australian’s visiting us over that period. Don’t expect an immediate return to times of old though – I still think it’ll take a while for folk to get their heads around travelling internationally, but at least it’s a start. I do expect the real benefit to come in ski season though when, weather permitting, we should have a bumper season. Two years of frustration pent up by Australian skiers combined with the local market will hopefully see the district pumping. To our business community – you’re an outstanding bunch! I know that not all have navigated through the past two years and I’m mortally sorry for them. However, for those who have, well done and I do hope that you are able to rebuild your businesses soundly for the future.

Over the past two years there’s been lots of conjecture as to whether the tourism industry will bounce back to its pre-covid form. I really do think it will take some time to recover, in particular for wouldbe visitors to get their heads back around long haul travel. I also do think that it’s inevitable that long haul travel will become more expensive with a good portion of the world’s wide bodied airliners parked up in deserts in the US. When I met the Prime Minister and the Minister of Tourism last week, I stressed the need to ensure we have the workforce available to us to service the industry when it does come back. Migrant workers have been an essential part of the local economy for decades and unfortunately, I don’t think those in Government quite understand this. The very last thing we want to do is see our visitors back here and only be able to provide a below-par experience because we can’t field the workers required. Regardless of all else, the light at the end of the tunnel is now very much daylight! I for one, can’t wait for some normality. Mayor Jim Boult

A new look for the Lakes Weekly Masthead This week our masthead might look a little different, perhaps a little cleaner. You may not have noticed and that’s okay, but I did want to point it out. We’ve removed elements like ‘First on the Street’, which we’ve had up there for years. We are still first on the street, of course, but we’ve decided to emphasise being both local and locally-owned instead. Therefore, today we’ve updated our masthead to very proudly say we are ‘locally owned since forever’. Why? Because we believe that being local is huge. The Lakes Weekly may not be as essential as the water and garbage collection, but we know it’s a wonderful and very unique publication. There aren’t many similar publications around anymore with the mix of jobs, news, features, business, and all the fun stuff. We know what’s important to this community, and aim to provide you with information you care about - local people, arts, events, politics, parks, parking and the rest. This means I love Tuesdays, when the Lakes Weekly hits the streets. I love being warmly greeted by people in those shops and businesses we hand deliver to, and then seeing those Lakes Weeklys marching around the town under people’s arms. Our team love it too. They are all local, local reporters, local sales and designers, who can pick up on local colour and read into situations in a way that national

correspondents can’t match. Our advertising and editorial teams also know Queenstown businesses like we know our own friends. With that in mind, we conceived our own Covid baby during lockdown, the monthly QT Business which is growing strongly with great feedback. In it you’ll find stories of our entrepreneurial resilience, bright ideas and all the big issues affecting our business community. And we’ve got all the jobs, too. The jobs number, in the top right hand corner of the front page, has acted as a barometer to many over the past two years, a sign of where we are as a community. Cries of ‘look – it’s up again this week’ told a wonderful story of hope. The great news is it’s up again this week. Because we as a community have been through the wringer in the last 750 days. And the Lakes Weekly Bulletin wouldn’t have made it out the other side, were it not for the support of our readers, our wonderful advertisers and also the enthusiastic backing of our owners, Ferg Spary, Scott Stevens and Andy Brinsley, all of whom are very local. So, as we come out of our nightmare and re-group, we start with a refreshed masthead emphasising our localness since forever and forever more because of you. David Gibbs Queenstown Media Group

The concept plan for the community centre

Community comes to Ladies Mile by Paul Taylor
Queenstown’s major subdivisions will finally have their own community centre by the end of the year. Around 300 people turned up to a public open day at 516 FranktonLadies Mile Highway on Sunday, to review $3.6 million plans to convert the former Walker family property. It will serve the nearby communities of Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country, where 1800 homes have been built in recent decades, as well as residents of Queenstown Country Club retirement village. Queenstown Lakes District Council bought the 14.6ha site, which includes a large home and orchard, for $13.8m back in 2019. The aim was secure a key tract of land for the community in a growth area, rather than let it fall into the hands of property developers. Its long-term future has not yet been decided, but rather than leave the building itself empty and unused, QLDC is injecting some funding to create a multi-purpose community facility. “It’s a rather large building and we want different spaces to be able to be used for different things,” council sports and recreation manager Simon Battrick says. “There’ll be bookable spaces that can be used for yoga, Pilates, meeting spaces, embroidery, toy library, Plunkett groups, working spaces, remote workers, you name it.” Battrick says the renovation should be completed by “November-ish” this year. “We’ve looked really closely at the house and what we’re doing is trying to minimise the amount of structural works. We know long-term the council is committed to doing a new building, in the next 10 to 15 years, so this is a medium-term option at this point in time. “So we want to minimise the cost to the ratepayers but ensure it’s functional as well.” The plan is to remove several non-load bearing walls in the building, along with some columns and other features, but retain the kitchen. A sprung floor will be installed. But, the swimming pool will be filled in. It cannot be retained because the rules around compliance for public use are too onerous and costly.
Members of the public look around the 516 Ladies Mile property on Sunday
QLDC also opened the floor to suggestions from the public for the picturesque 14.6ha of grounds. It has been fending off interest from the Ministry of Education in recent weeks, about it being a possible site for a new high school. Battrick says councillors voting to reject the Ministry’s advances is a coup for the local communities. “They’ve been crying out for community facilities for a long time and it’s a real recognition of that. “And we’re really open to hearing what the community want to do in this area. We want community ownership. “So far, we’ve had suggestions for everything from a potato farm, to sports fields, dog parks, community gardens. There are lots of different ideas. Ultimately it will come down to what the community wants to do and how we can fund that to make it happen.” Queenstown Country Club resident Derek Bulman, who was at the open day on Sunday, thinks the land is too valuable to the community to use for a school. “It’s an ideal spot for a community centre. You’ve got Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country, not to mention all the development over the road, if that ever gets off the ground. “There was always a community centre in Queenstown itself, but that’s going and anyway the whole community is moving out this way to live. “So now we have the opportunity with this place to do something for all the groups who can’t afford their own places and facilities. When you put them all together, there’s a real need.” Sunday’s suggestions for the building and land included a community BBQ area, a place for markets, fairs, stalls and music, community learning spaces, rehearsal rooms, a library, a party room, chicken farm, skate park, go-kart track, movie theatre, park-and-ride and a KFC.

Half-price fares but no extra buses by Paul Taylor
“However, due to Covid, a national driver shortage, and the recent increase in capacity provided for school services, we must manage that demand. It is unlikely that we will be able to provide extra services if buses are full. “This will mean that if demand exceeds current capacity, passengers exceeding that capacity will have to wait for a later bus. There will be no extra buses put on. “We are asking our passengers, including new ones attracted by the price, to keep this in mind and prepare.” Rodgers said a key way to alleviate pressure was to spread travel across the day. “It would be extremely helpful if passengers who were able to, could move their journey to off peak times where possible. This would give those who cannot move their travel times more chance to get to their destination.”
Queenstown bus fares will be just $1 from April 1 for three months, but there’ll be no extra buses if demand exceeds capacity. Otago Regional Council has endorsed the Government missive that fares for public transport in the region are halved to offset rising living costs, including fuel. Queenstown and Dunedin bus fares will be slashed from next week until July 1. Bee Card bus fares for adults will be $1. Cash fares and children’s fares are also reduced by half. Transport Manager Doug Rodgers said: “Our current patronage is almost the same as pre-Covid and we expect it to increase.
Early this year ORC worked with schools and bus operators to enable more students to get to school on the public transport network after a school service provider ceased operations. Patronage had increased as a result of those changes, Rodgers said. “As an example, last month the number of students using services from Green Island into town rose from 361 to 742 students in one week. That’s nearly double our usual patronage. Overflow buses added to the Mosgiel service to and from town have been full too.” The reduced fare will be automatically applied when tagging on with a Bee Card or paying the driver with cash. Total Mobility journeys are also included and will have the additional discount applied on top of the current subsidy. For more information on updated services check the Orbus Queenstown website.

Nevis Fault could produce major earthquake by Tony O’Regan, Wanaka App
A fault which runs from Lake Wānaka to Garston has the potential to create a magnitude seven earthquake, new research commissioned by the Earthquake Commission (EQC) has found. Seismic research on the 100km-long Nevis Fault confirms that the lowseismicity area (one with infrequent earthquakes) has had at least two major ruptures in the past and it has the potential to create an earthquake as significant as the magnitude 7.1 which hit Darfield, Canterbury, in 2010.

“EQC supports this type of research because it is important for developers, local councils, and the public to understand and manage potential seismic hazards,” Natalie said.
A project to better understand the Nevis Fault has found it could cause a significant earthquake. PHOTO: Wanaka App
“People in Otago and Southland usually only think about the Alpine Fault when they think about earthquakes, but we now know that there are major faults in low-seismicity areas that could produce a major event,” University of Otago lead researcher Mark Stirling said. The faults in Otago and Southland generally have long time periods between earthquakes and they can show great variability in behaviour through time, Mark said. “But if the Nevis-Cardrona system were to rupture, we’d most definitely see a large earthquake and most of Otago and Southland would feel it.” Mark, along with postdoctoral scholar Dr Jack Williams and a team of students and colleagues, returned this week from digging two 25-metre long trenches high in the Upper Nevis Basin (south of Queenstown) to gain a better understanding of the Nevis Fault, and the greater Nevis-Cardrona fault system. A lot more data would be needed to forecast the timing of the next event with any degree of confidence, he said. EQC research manager Natalie Balfour said EQC commissioned the work because the Queenstown Lakes District is one of the fastest growing areas in New Zealand, with a huge amount of new housing and infrastructure development.

Awareness of earthquake hazard is often not as pronounced in low seismicity areas as in high seismicity areas, and that this could really intensify the impact of a future event, Mark said. Mark said he hopes knowledge and awareness of local seismic hazards will help Southerners be prepared for an earthquake. Emergency Management Otago recommends the following steps to be prepared for an earthquake: • Practice ‘Drop, Cover and Hold’ regularly - it stops you being knocked over, makes you a smaller target for falling and flying objects and protects your head, neck and vital organs. • Make a plan to get home, work and community ready so that wherever you might be, you’re prepared and talk about it with your loved ones so that everyone knows what to do. https://www.otagocdem.govt.nz/ • Create or update your emergency kit today with supplies to last you at least seven days. You can either make your own or buy a kit and add your own items to it. https://www.otagocdem.govt.nz/get-home-ready • Make your home safer by ensuring objects that could fall and hurt people are either relocated or fixed/fastened to the wall or floor. https://www. eqc.govt.nz/be-prepared • Sign up to Otago Gets Ready for text/email alerts (this is one of Civil Defence’s tools to provide advice for emergency situations that affect you personally including floods, fires etc). It also gives you the opportunity to list any skills, resources or vulnerabilities which helps Civil Defence to plan and get help more quickly to where it’s needed most. • There’s a lot more information on earthquakes and how to prepare here. https://www.otagocdem.govt.nz/hazards/earthquakes

Monthly Column Joseph Mooney MP for Southland
It is exciting news for Queenstown with international borders reopening. After two years of effectively being cut off from the rest of the world, international visitors can once again confirm their travel plans to our incredible part of the world. This will be welcome news to the many locally owned and family-run businesses that have done it extremely tough, while supporting their team members as best they could, through a time that no one could have foreseen. It will be great to see our town’s enthusiasm, innovation and uniqueness flower after a very long winter of pandemic lockdowns, restrictions and border closures. My National colleagues and I welcomed last week’s moves to abolish vaccine passes and scanning requirements, the scrapping of outdoor gathering limits and the phasing out of most vaccine mandates. We had been calling for those changes to reflect the changed reality that Omicron has ushered in. Although we think the Government should go further and scrap the traffic light framework completely as it doesn’t make sense. The traffic light framework was based on vaccine passes, and with those gone it is also time for the framework to go. It has been a very challenging time for many members of our town for a number of reasons and it is great to be able to start getting back to normal and unifying our community. Last week’s announcements have been a case of the Government acknowledging the reality that dealing with Omicron requires a different approach and a different set of tools compared to previous Covid variants. These rule changes will let our restaurants fill their tables, our hotels fill their rooms and our experience operators fill their itineraries. National had also made progress recently encouraging the Government to make sensible changes to its border rules in light of the fact that omicron cases inside New Zealand were exploding at the same time that there were very few at our borders. However there remains work to be done on New Zealand’s border policies to support our community. Queenstown remains one of the areas most affected by New Zealand’s massive shortage of labour. I have been working hard with other members of our team on this because I want our local businesses and the people they employ to do well, and they can only do that if they have enough team members. Working holiday makers have made a long and rich contribution to Queenstown over many decades - both as workers and patrons in our hospitality and accomodation venues. They have also helped in our broader region with vital contributions such as fruit picking, and their absence has been keenly felt in recent months as fruit went unpicked and fell to the ground. It is vital that we attract them back here. Australia recognised this some months ago and have been working hard on trying to attract working holiday makers back to their shores, although they have discovered it is much harder than it used to be. New Zealand needs to at least match what Australia is doing, particularly as they hungrily eye our workforce amidst their own serious labour shortages. National is pushing for a number of initiatives that will help our local businesses attract the people they need to ensure Queenstown can continue to offer the high quality experiences it is well known for. These initiatives include refunding visa application fees for all Working Holiday Visa holders (as Australia does), raising the working holiday age limit from 30 to 35 and allowing anyone who has already had a Working Holiday Visa in New Zealand apply for a second visa. We also calling on the Government to create special rules for second and third Working Holiday Visas for the tourism, hospitality and agriculture sectors. Throughout the last two years I have assisted with many immigration cases in our region reflecting the wonderfully diverse population in our town. As part of my commitment to helping Queenstown thrive again, please remember my door is always open if you, your friends and family, or team need assistance.

I’ve just been told I have a new title. My old editor from Queenstown Times days saw a story about my husband being described as a veteran property developer, so he says I must be a veteraness. From now on, I will only answer to Her Royal Veteraness Miranda. It’s been a sad but fascinating week - I was thrilled to be allowed to sit in on a Zoom meeting at the Liger Academy where two of the students are in Krakow with their family. The QT children have been at the big train station where so many mothers and children are arriving. They are having to decide where in Poland (remember that most don’t speak Polish and may know nothing about the country) they should move to. Imagine if you had never been to NZ and arrived in AKL, knew no-one and didn’t speak English, but had to choose a destination. Many have brought their pets, and when the QT children brought sandwiches and cookies for the children, they realised they were giving their food to the animals, so the next day they planned to buy lots of petfood. One of the students here noticed there weren’t many masks being worn and asked if Covid was a big deal there. Um no, Covid is a non-event when there’s a war on. The fundraiser at Dorothy Browns Cinema had me in tears with a QT based Ukrainian girl telling us about life for her family in her country right now. She says the best way to help is to NOT buy Russian anything (yes, that does include Russian vodka but there are dangerously delicious ones from many other countries) and to show support for Ukraine. Wear blue and yellow and give the thumbs up for social media posts mocking PoohTin and praising Ukraine. The organisers had chosen a very important but absolutely hideous documentary showing why Ukrainians are so keen not to be part of Russia. It was not a fun night, but still managed to raise $2925 — well done!! If anyone wants to organise a big showing of Wakatipians supporting Ukraine, let me know as I’ve got my blue and yellow outfit ready. Omicron is making life SO annoying for businesses - in Arrowtown on Saturday morning, only 3 cafes were able to open, and town was packed. There was a running and biking race up on Big Hill so it was a bit lethal being on the Sawpit Gully track. Do you know there’s a new track there now? I think it was made when they needed access to get the wilding pines chopped down, but it’s much more zigzaggy and less straight up than the existing one. We puffed our old lady legs up to the top of German Hill and lay on our backs as we waited for all the muscly racers to finish. And my old lady legs looked positively Olympian compared to some of the locals trying to get in to visit the Walker House on Ladies Mile. QLDC showed great foresight buying the house and all that land years ago, but since that nanosecond of brilliance, they’ve kept it empty and unused. Shocking profligacy given the huge shortage of community spaces. There’s a perfectly good driveway into the property, but the gate was locked and there was ZERO signage about the open day. It meant everyone had to walk a very long way in from a tiny carpark. I asked why disabled people couldn’t use the driveway as there were a lot of oldies (even older than me!!) and I was told Transit NZ don’t want people to use the driveway. It certainly wasn’t stopping QLDC staff from opening the locked gate and parking their own cars right inside.

Collins wins big by Paul Taylor
Queenstown snowboarder Tiarn Collins is the FIS Slopestyle World Cup champion. The 22-year-old became the first Kiwi snowboarder to lift the FIS Snowboard Crystal Globe, at Silvaplana, Switzerland, over the weekend. “It’s pretty cool,” Collins said with the globe in hand. “It’s not something that’s really on your mind at the start of the season, but once you start getting towards the end it kind of creeps into your mind. “It feels good. I’m stoked. It was a sick season.” Although Collins finished in seventh place at the final slopestyle World Cup of the season on Sunday in Silvaplana, his results from previous events this season meant he had enough points to secure the overall slopestyle title for the 2021/22 season. Collins took the win last weekend at the Spindleruv Mlyn Slopestyle World Cup, the second win of his career, and a third-place finish at the Mammoth Mountain Slopestyle World Cup in January. He also represented NZ at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. He finished in the top spot with 236 points, 55 points ahead of second place Leon Vockensperger of Germany who was unfortunately not there today due to injury. Mons Roisland of Norway rounded out the overall podium in third place with 173 points. With the Northern Hemisphere season drawing to a close, Collins say “it’s time to go snowboarding”.

Rare high-end sections to hit the market by Paul Taylor
Deer Park Heights’ landowners have launched a new upmarket subdivision which could eventually include a village precinct. Peninsula Hill is on the sunny, north-facing slopes below the Queenstown landmark, on the affluent Kelvin Peninsula. Even the median house price there is $2.25 million and bare sections are rare. So, there’s already been a good deal of interest in the first stage of Peninsula Hill, which hits the market next month. The 17-section Kārearea stage has lots ranging from 1041sqm up to 3694m, across 4.8ha of land. They will be sold as land-only, but there are design guidelines to encourage premium architectural homes crafted to sit within the landscape rather than stand out from it. Expressions of interest opened last Thursday. Colliers Director of Residential Sales Fred Bramwell says: “There has been talk for many years regarding the possibility of a land release at this location. “However, the landowners have not wanted to rush the project, instead waiting until the time was right and they felt comfortable it could evolve in the right way, particularly with regard to design guidelines, lot sizes and building platform positions.” The names behind the Peninsula Hill development are two that many Queenstowners will be familiar with. Mike Mee and Liz Dickson are the children of Frank Mee, who took ownership of Peninsula Hill and Deer Park Heights when he purchased Kawarau Falls Station in 1960. Last November, Mike and Liz placed a QEII Trust covenant on 170 hectares of land on their Kawarau Falls Station at the southern entrance of Queenstown, near the Kawarau Falls Bridge.
They’ve already released some Peninsula Hill land for development, with the 17-lot The Peninsula subdivision going to market four years ago, with prices initially suggested at around $1 million. “We expect pricing to reflect what is a rare and boutique offering for Queenstown, as demand continues to outstrip supply in this sector,” Bramwell says. “We’ve had a number of parties get in contact about the land without it being on the market, and are expecting to see a new influx of interest as the borders start to open.” The development could be expanded to scores of sections over the coming years, with a village precinct near the entrance of Peninsula Road. That could include a convenience store, café, bar/restaurant, sheltered outdoor spaces, playground and office or meeting rooms, all built under the same design guidelines.
Arts+Culture Creator of the GIF dies by Bethany Rogers
Steve Wilhite, the creator of the GIF (graphics interchange format), died last week at the age of 74.
“Choosy developers choose GIF,” explained Mr Wilhite. The use of colour was also a revelation as GIF’s main predecessor, runlength encoding format (RLE), was only in black-and-white. An ‘enhanced’ version of the GIF (purportedly pronounced “Jif”), called 87a, was released on 15th June 1987. This enabled a short, continuous, animated loop to be played. The very first GIF featured an aeroplane. It was a new kind of storytelling – one that was optimised for the online world and attuned to the attention span of internet users. In 1991, it was adopted by the earliest web browser. By 1995, it was the most popular image file format in use. In the early 2000s, Myspace fans pimped their accounts with sparkling and moving buttons. Tumblr users used the GIF to create reactions, vignettes and memes in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The platform soon became a space for GIF artists who experimented with the possibilities for the file format.
Swathes of the internet community flooded online feeds and pages with GIFs in tribute to Mr Wilhite last week. The American inventor and computer scientist developed the GIF while working at Compuserve (later AOL) in the 1980s. The format was ideal for its time. The GIF’s compressed format was perfect for performing image transfers across the slow modem connections of the time. Think of it as a neat, light package that’s easily delivered.
Creative NZ Creative New Zealand seeks feedback “Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi. “When the old net is cast aside or is worn, the new net is then cast out.” New Zealand’s arts council is seeking feedback on its proposed plans for the next four years (1 July 2022 – 30 June 2026). Creative New Zealand established a 10-year strategic direction in mid-2019 before our world turned upside-down. Recognising that the pandemic has changed our communities and society both locally and globally, the council says that while its strategic direction is still relevant, it’s time to change focus. There are three proposed areas of focus: • Wellbeing • Access, inclusion and equity • Resilience (including sector sustainability and sustainable careers). The council is also proposing a greater focus on partnerships to help increase the positive impact of the arts. The public’s feedback will inform the development of Creative New Zealand’s Statement of Intent 2022–2026 and the development of its annual plans. The discussion document and feedback form can be found on creativenz.govt.nz
One such artist was Russian internet artist Olia Lialina, who started experimenting with the format in 1997. She created unique ‘chooseyour-own adventure’ interactive digital artwork. GIF was not her format of choice – she wanted to use video – but browsers at that time would not support the huge video files. GIF was the only practical way to display a moving image. Despite other file formats – like PNG (portable network graphics) becoming a viable alternative, the GIF has become an internet legend and continues to be in popular use. Wilhite won a Webby award for lifetime achievement in 2013. He died from Covid-19 complications in hospital on 14th March 2022. Digital artists around the world have expressed their sadness, with many saying that the internet would not be the same without the humble GIF.
Art News Warhol’s Blue Marilyn’ Poised to Fetch $200 M. Could Set a Record for One of Art History’s Most Expensive Artists In what may become one of the most expensive works of contemporary art ever to be sold at auction, a sixty-year-old portrait of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol will be sold at Christie’s this May. Coming to a 20thcentury art evening sale in New York with an estimate upon request, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964) is expected to fetch a sum around $200 million. If it reaches expectations, the sale could nearly double Warhol’s current record of $105.4 million, set when his 1963 canvas Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) sold at Sotheby’s in 2013. Measuring 3 feet square, the silkscreen painting depicts a press photo from Monroe’s 1953 film Niagara. The image is one Warhol used repeatedly in his work until his death in 1987. It derives from his “Shot Marilyn” portrait series, which Warhol produced after an incident at his downtown studio in 1964 when a visitor shot into and damaged a stack of canvases. Art News
First Thursdays Queenstown hits pause but art goes on: Starkwhite While Aotearoa is at Red, one of Queenstown’s best art experiences is taking a break but there are great exhibitions still on. Check out First Thursdays on instagram or facebook to know when we restart: @firstthursdaysqt Starkwhite’s new exhibition Recollections May Vary is a group show exploring representations of landscape from awry. Poking at the ubiquity of ‘landscape’ and instead offering contemporary practice with a unique, uneasy, or individual slant on this art historical genre, the title reminds us that how we see and remember something or some-place depends on the experience and perspective we bring to it. A body of work by celebrated Australian photographer Bill Henson is joined in the gallery by seven artists whose work offers a similar take, emphasising that landscapes are culture before they are nature. Known for haunting, dramatic photography, Bill Henson captures place in an in-between state that recalls cinema and dreamscape. His night-time landscapes are moody explorations of the twilight zones of our lives. Yuk King Tan recalls Hong Kong’s mythology in her ethereal sculpture Nine Mountains that sees white tassels cascade across Starkwhite’s floor. Billy Apple’s Study for a New Zealand Flag III is a measure of cultural landscape or human geography, while the subject of Fiona Pardington’s photograph is an illustrious mushroom, one reserved for the aristocracy in Medieval France but offering a sting in the tail. Reflecting upon how humans have chosen to record the natural world, Whitney Bedford draws upon an archive of historical landscape paintings to illustrate how images from the past underscore the dire reality of climate change and shifting ecosystems in the present. An atmospheric work by Layla Rudneva-MacKay remembers a place that never truly existed and in Petra Cortright’s work the definition of painting becomes intriguingly unstable.
Bill Henson, Untitled #144, 1985-1986 (1985-1986)
Local artist Jessica Winchcombe employs her own painted canvases as landscapes of sorts, their colours based on experiences of place, before shredding and weaving strips into densely folded forms. This is a landscape exhibition – but not as you know it – one reflective of the landscape around us and the impact it has had on our culture and collective imagination.

Fox to play Millbrook Classic by Paul Taylor
New Zealand’s top pro golfer Ryan Fox is set to lead a 28-strong field at the Millbrook Classic this weekend. Fresh off his victory at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic in the United Arab Emirates on the DP World Tour, the two-time European Tour winner is back in his home country to play in the tournament. The Millbrook Classic, set to tee off on April 2, was organised to support NZ players after the cancellation of the New Zealand Open due to Covid-19 restrictions. They will compete for a total purse of $150,000. “I have heard lots of positive comments about the new Coronet course at Millbrook, and I am excited to get back to Queenstown to check it out,” Fox says. “And from the makeup of the field that has been assembled, I know it’s going to be a great few days of tournament golf.” Among the professionals joining Fox in the field is his European Tour colleague Josh Geary, 2021 New Zealand PGA Champion Tae Koh, and Queenstown locals Ben Campbell, James Anstiss, Greg Turner and Micah Dickinson. Leading domestic professionals, including Mark Brown, Gareth Paddison, Luke Brown, Harry Bateman and Luke Toomey, will also compete. Toomey thanked the team behind the tournament.

“It’s been pretty hard for touring professionals during the pandemic, as we rely on tournaments and events for a major part of our income,” Toomey says.
“We have assembled a really strong professional field in a pretty short time frame and are thrilled to have young Momoka Kobori join us, following her excellent performances in recent mixed Pro events in Australia. In addition, with Ben Campbell and Josh Geary, who join Fox as three of our internationally based players, there is stiff competition for the New Zealand based pros.”
“It’s great to see an event like this with a pretty large purse here in New Zealand, designed specifically to support Kiwi golfers.” Tournament Director Michael Glading is delighted to have such a strong field available. “It’s great to have Ryan back in the country and confirm his commitment to the Millbrook Classic. Not only will it be great for the strength of the field, but I know he will share his experience and knowledge with the next generation of kiwi pros who are looking to kick on to the world stage.
Fox picked up his second DP World Tour title at the Ras al Khaimah Classic on March 13, posting rounds of of 69-65-69 to finish five strokes clear of England’s Ross Fisher. The win took him into the top ten of the DP World Tour Rankings and ended a near three-year winless drought across the Covid-19 affected period.

A HEART FOR THE HURTING by Sue Fea
She’s been a kind of Fairy Godmother of sorts, granting 600 bucket list wishes to terminally ill patients since 2015, but these days Viv James is living in peaceful Bannockburn where she’s now filling her own tank.
“It’s just as beneficial to give as to receive. It’s a humanitarian trait that we all hold,” she says. In granting wishes to dying people, Viv saw “the currency of money taken over by the current of the heart”.
The Race4Life charity founder and general manager has devoted thousands of volunteer hours to what is now a hugely popular national organisation. Through the charity’s Track Days, first held in the Waikato while Viv was working at Auckland’s Mercy Hospice, it became clear that so many terminally ill patients had wishes. She worked at the hospice from 2007 until 2014 where she and volunteer co-ordinator Julie Reid ran a successful programme, organising dying wishes on the side - something Julie had begun years prior. They’d ask people what they most wanted to do in their last days then orchestrate a plan. They brought in all manner of entertainers, tutors and pamper specialists to treat the hospice patients. “We had a ukulele player come in and teach, an art tutor, massage, nails and make-up. It was a magic environment,” she says. “People just wanted to get away from their mundane everyday existence and reconnect with humanity.”
“How could you be privy to something more beautiful? My passion is driven by what I see in humanity. I just kept seeing the very best of humanity.” It hasn’t been without its heartbreak and awkward moments though. “One darling patient requested a rented suit to have a celebration with his daughters from two marriages. He wanted to be photographed with each one, knowing that he wouldn’t be there for their weddings,” says Viv. Unfortunately a bit of miscommunication between the two wives saw the man buried in the rented suit instead of his own.
Viv James at home at Bannockburn
One motorsport enthusiast patient sparked that first, high octane Waikato Track Day in 2008, which now hosts more than 80 patients with 400 volunteers assisting. Patients ride in everything from helicopters and racing cars to luxurious cars and on motorcyles. The original event in 2008 involved 17 patients, 23 race cars and the Roast Beef Company donating food - a far cry from the present day. Viv worked with the Southland community to introduce a similar event, now held annually at Teretonga Raceway.
“They’ve just been amazing. I went to see the marketing manager at Fergburger to tell her we had five wishes one month and she said, “If you have five every day we would look after you’,” says Viv.
The Race4Life Charitable Trust, formed in 2015, is the first and only organisation looking after the wishes of palliative care for those 19 years and over in New Zealand.
“Crowne Plaza staff even place a custom-made package on the bed for each patient. Garden Court, Hilton Queenstown and Coronet View Apartments… the list goes on,” she says.
A world first study by Kiwi researcher Dr Alison Booth is investigating the impact of these wishes on patients, their families and communities in New Zealand. Viv and Dr Booth will present the findings at the Montreal Palliative Care Conference in Canada in September this year.
In the midst of the 2020 lockdowns their generosity moved Viv to stop by each of these operators in their time of plight and drop them chocolates. “Ben, a pilot at The Helicopter Line, was out painting the fence and said, ‘This is the best thing that’s happened to me two weeks.”
“They’ve all been fabulous – Shotover Jet, Skyline, Southern Discovery, Million Dollar Cruise, Real Journeys, Helicopter Line, Fear Factor, Thrillzone, Queenstown Taxis, Joe’s Garage, Lone Star, Flame and Grill, Gibbston Valley Winery, Mount Edward Wines, the Ice Arena, Patagonia.
Celebrities have been phenomenal with pop star Pink going the extra mile for one patient, creating a personalised get well video. Sadly, the young woman died weeks before the Pink concert she was being treated to in Auckland. Race4Life organised for her mother and a friend to take her place for a luxury weekend. Rachel Hunter, Sir John Kirwan, Simon Mannering, the All Blacks, the Warriors, have all been magnificent, she says. Former All Blacks Captain Sam Kane sent personalised video messages to one patient who was too unwell to attend an All Black test. “We’ve even had a weekend donated for an end of life party for 75 at $10,000 a night Eagle’s Nest Luxury Estate property in Northland.” Many wish recipients have given all their lives and aren’t comfortable with receiving,” says Viv. “I point out to them that it’s their time to receive and they’re giving someone else a chance to give.” “The ancient Christian message is true,” she says. “It’s in giving that we receive. People feel so good they want to do it again.”
Viv says her drive came from witnessing the impact these wishes were having, and from the huge demand. “I was forever witnessing the very best of humanity,” she says. “You get to make a difference for a tiny part at the end of their life. You move in, take in their story and emotionally attach yourself, but we also need to keep ourselves safe.” It’s vital in this work to invest in the wellbeing of staff and volunteers. “We each need to be aware of what fills emotional tanks so that we’re equipped to deal with the rawness and sadness which is part of the deal.” “Everyone’s different. I had to run, have regular massages. Others needed to head away for a week, talk it out or have a quiet walk in nature,” says Viv. “It’s in giving that we receive and I’ve seen this play out so many times,” she says. “Over the years we’ve had a number of requests from patients, to go to Queenstown. We have about 40 wonderful businesses there who support our wish service,” she says. Surprisingly, this generosity didn’t wane as the effects of the 2020 border closures and lockdowns started to bite.

The trust is looking for volunteers to help in planting 1500 native trees and shrubs along the Queenstown Trail, and be part of the transformation of this reserve into a thriving habitat for our native birds and insects. Morning Tea is being provided by The Hilton Hotel Kawarau Village, and there is an open invite for the volunteers to join the trust for a community BBQ when planting is complete. Over the next 4 weekends across April, the trust is out planting natives at our Keystone sites. These reforestation sites are located on public land for easy community access and enjoyment - next to the bike trails, where you walk the dogs and where the kids play. Planting days are drop-in style, and everyone is welcome. Dates & locations: • Sat 2nd April 9am – 12noon - Whitechapel Reserve, Arrow Junction (followed by community BBQ) • Sat 9th April 9am – 11am - Bush Creek (Park at the Chinese Village and follow the track west on the Arrowtown side of the river.) • Sat 23rd April 9am – 11am - Lake Hayes South (Park at Lake Hayes Pavilion and walk left along the track.) • Sat 30th April 9am – 12noon - Slopehill Road (off Speargrass Flats Road) (followed by community BBQ) What to bring: Gardening Gloves, sturdy garden shovel, hat, good footwear, water, sunscreen and a desire to make a difference and leave your lasting legacy on our beautiful landscape.

Warren Buffett inks $11.6B deal for insurer Alleghany
Grow Wanaka Community Garden is looking for volunteers to join their Saturday Morning working bees. No experience is necessary, and the working bee kicks off each Saturday morning at 9.30am. It recommended you bring along gardening gloves and a water bottle. Other equipment is supplied. The food grown is provided to the Community Networks foodbank as well as local Community produce stands. Dr Compost is hosting a Bokashi bin workshop on April 9th. For more information email info@growwanaka.com or just pop in. Grow Wanaka Community Garden is located on Outlet Road, Wanaka.
Warren Buffett, who started the year bemoaning the lack of potential acquisitions for his conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway, announced last Monday that it would acquire the insurance company Alleghany for $US11.6 billion. The scarcity of investment targets over the past several years turned into a cash pile of $US146.7 billion at Berkshire by the end of 2021, but the company appears to have found a suitable place for some of that cash in recent days. Berkshire Hathaway revealed last week that it had compiled a 14.6% stake in Occidental Petroleum, snapping up an additional $1 billion worth of shares just between Monday and Wednesday. That was on top of the more than $6 billion Berkshire spent acquiring shares of the oil producer over the past month. The all-cash acquisition of Alleghany will expand Berkshire’s already considerable insurance holdings, including brands like Geico auto insurance. “Berkshire will be the perfect permanent home for Alleghany, a company that I have closely observed for 60 years,” Buffett said in a prepared statement Monday. And Just Like That… is officially returning for a second season HBO Max is bringing back the Sex And The City sequel series for a second season. In a statement, the show’s executive producer Michael Patrick King says, “I am delighted and excited to tell more stories about these vibrant, bold characters - played by these powerful, amazing actors. The fact is, we’re all thrilled. And Just like That… our Sex life is back.” HBO Max also notes that the show “delivered the strongest debut of any HBO Max Original Series to date.” Those numbers make sense. Fans of the original show were very curious about where the group of friends ended up and what excuse the writers would give for Samantha’s absence. Though Carrie becoming a widower was meant to be the big shocker of the series, the twist that was most-discussed by fans was Miranda’s big life change.
Evergrande’s crisis continues: $2 billion seized, earnings delayed Banks have seized $2 billion in cash from Evergrande, the ailing Chinese real estate developer reported last week, as it announced a delay to the publication of its annual earnings. Evergrande said that it won’t be able to meet the March 31 deadline in a year which saw it default on its debts as prices and activity in China’s vast real estate sector slumped. One of its units — Evergrande Property Services — said some of its lenders had unexpectedly claimed around 13.4 billion yuan ($2.1 billion) of its bank deposits that were pledged as collateral for “third party guarantees.” It didn’t specify who the lenders were, saying only that the banks had taken control of the cash. The property services unit said it would establish an independent committee to investigate. The company said that it will provide a debt restructuring proposal to creditors by the end of July. CNN
NASA confirms 5,000 exoplanets The count of confirmed exoplanets has just ticked past the 5,000 mark, representing a 30-year journey of discovery led by NASA space telescopes. Not so long ago, we lived in a universe with only a small number of known planets, all of them orbiting our sun. But a new raft of discoveries marks a scientific high point: More than 5,000 planets are now confirmed to exist beyond our solar system. The planetary odometer turned on March 21, with the latest batch of 65 exoplanets—planets outside our immediate solar family—added to the NASA Exoplanet Archive. The 5,000-plus planets found so far include small, rocky worlds like Earth, gas giants many times larger than Jupiter, and “hot Jupiters” in scorchingly close orbits around their stars. There are “super-Earths,” which are possible rocky worlds bigger than our own, and “mini-Neptunes,” smaller versions of our system’s Neptune. Add to the mix planets orbiting two stars at once and planets stubbornly orbiting the collapsed remnants of dead stars. Phys.org
QLDC Libraries Librarian Profile
Lakes Weekly Bulletin and Queenstown Lakes Libraries are profiling our librarians. This month we are profiling Rebecca Daly who is a Assistant Librarian at the Queenstown Library.
@qldclibraries
Queenstown Lakes District Libraries
Kia ora koutou. I’m Bec, you may know me from the children’s area at the Queenstown Library where I spend most of my time trying to get the best books for our community, or running one of our many amazing kids programs. I firmly believe most situations can be made better by a book and a cuppa - I’ve always loved a good story, and I especially enjoy sharing and passing this love onto others, which is why working at the library is a dream come true. Whether its reading, listening, or learning, I think stories can bring us together, which seems pretty important in times like these. But let’s rewind. Believe it or not, even though my wriggle and rhyme acapella may make me seem like an expert, I haven’t always been a children’s and youth library assistant. In my past lives I’ve tried my hand at desk jobs, I’ve been a travel agent, and I even worked at a garden store for a while. But as my long suffering house plants will tell you, none of those jobs were meant to be. Spurred on by an overactive imagination (inspired by Indiana Jones and National Treasure), I enrolled in a graduate university course in archiving, fairly convinced I was going to be the next internationally renowned historian/ treasure finder. Unfortunately, it became clear very quickly
this was incredibly unlikely – not least because treasure hunting always seems to require the kinds of outdoor and survival skills that anyone who knows me will tell you I do not possess. Undeterred, I swapped to the library stream of my course and I’ve been in love ever since. After all, Libraries combine all my favourite things – going on amazing adventures (without having to go outdoors), getting to know real life people and learning their stories, and of course: free stuff (did you know library membership doesn’t cost a thing and you can borrow up to 50 items at a time!?). Throw in a tea break and I’m a happy gal. If you’d told past me that I would one day be working surrounded by books, mentoring the next generation of Lego Masters, leading school holiday crafting, and reading stories to bright little minds I would have been thrilled – and you’d have saved me a lot of time!
If you’re after some reading inspiration, here are some of my top pics of the year so far Circe, by Madeline Miller
Circe, once relegated to a side-character in others’ adventures, is now empowered as we revisit old Greek myths including the Odyssey from her refreshingly feminist perspective.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, by Taylor Jenkins Reid
At its core, it’s a love story of a couple fighting against the odds in extraordinary circumstances, a prudent reminder of why we must all fight for our right to love freely.
Under the Whispering Door, by TJ Klune
This book starts with the death of the main character, and follows him into his afterlife, which is primarily set in a tea shop with an eccentric but charismatic owner… What is not to love!
Know My Name, Chanel Miller
Chanel Miller was once only known as ‘Jane Doe’ in a highly publicised rape trial. In this book Chanel reclaims her name and her life in such a wellarticulated way that it is relatable and empowering all at once. I started recommending it in when it came out in 2019, and I will continue to recommend it to everyone at any chance I get. … Some of these favourites have been recommended to by library borrowers, and I’m always looking to add to my reading list, so come and find me next time you’re at the library, I’d love to have a chat!

Gardening Tips Whilst plenty of veges are still producing and harvest is still ongoing, there is certainly a noticeable chill in the morning air. With the leaves just starting to turn golden, as gardeners it’s also time to start to prepare for transition. It is time to preserve the excess produce and prepare garden beds for the cooler months.
GARDEN MAINTENANCE •Pull out the vegetables as they die off •Look out for slugs •Clean up continues: trim hedges, mow lawns, keep the weeds out •Lift and divide clumps of perennials Here are some more tips and things to do at this time of the year: The Vege Garden Consider brassicas as they thrive this season: that’s the Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower. If you would like some variety, try adding beetroots. You may also want to consider planting onions, carrots or leeks where you had brassicas last year. Move the brassicas into a new bed with good quality soil. Brassicas are heavy feeders and they need well-draining soil. Space brassica varieties (approximately) 50cm apart. If you have limited garden space, growing cabbages in containers (about 30-35 litre containers) could be your option. Approximately, you may plant 5 cabbages in a 35 litre container. Try planting spring onions in the same container as a great companion plant for cabbages. If you have an abundance of tomatoes or zucchinis, it’s now a good time to start preserving them maybe a tomato or zucchini relish? Flower Garden Keep your flower garden blooming with beautiful stock flowers. They have stunning displays, a perfect choice for cut flowers, and indoor floral arrangements. It’s also a great time to plant pansies. Herb Garden

Marathon entries open, limited spaces by Paul Taylor
Entries are now open for the 2022 New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon, running on 19 November. But due to a high number of entries moving across from the cancelled 2021 event, places will be limited. Thousands of runners are already signed up to take on the full distance marathon, the half marathon and the 10km. Race Director Keegan McCauley says he is urging those who wish to take part in this year’s event to act fast to secure their spot on the start line. “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome back the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon on 19 November and put on a spectacular event for our athletes to take in the beauty of Queenstown and its scenic trails,” he said. “Our organising team was bitterly disappointed we couldn’t deliver the 2021 event, but with thousands moving their entry to November 2022 we are expecting a bumper year. Entries are limited so please secure your spot early if you’d like to run or walk this flat-out beautiful marathon.” The return of the Queenstown Marathon will provide a welcome boost to local business. In previous years, the weekend has injected $10 million into the local economy. It was one of the last events to cancel due to Covid-19 red traffic light restrictions, following the Wānaka A&P Show, the Motatapu, the New Zealand Open, Moonlight Marathon and Queenstown Bike Festival.

More recently Luma has pulled pin, just days before Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced changes to the settings, including the removal of limits on gatherings outdoors.

2020 lockdown. It wasn’t such a bad thing. He met his Kiwi partner, Sara Li, who worked for the United Nations as a lawyer in Rome. “I was to be here for a month or so, but I couldn’t leave and I saw a lot of opportunities here so decided to stay. Queenstown was a huge attraction and he’s now based here half of the year. “I saw an opportunity to partner and support top Kiwi business founders as they built world-changing companies from here.” A year ago he and friends, Ajay Gupta and Glen Anderson, based in California, Vishal Chaddha based in India and Rich Bodo in New Zealand, set up NZVC with the aim of raising $20 million in venture capital to get innovative Kiwi start-ups off the ground. So far they’ve raised $13 million. After helping a Ukrainian friend escape to Moldova when the war broke out last month (February), finding her housing there, Mark had an idea. He’d also been helping a good friend who had managed to escape to Poland, trying to get him and his family a sponsor so he could work in the United Kingdom or New Zealand. “I was going to try and help bring them to New Zealand. That’s where the idea for Open World came from,” he says.

HOPE FOR A SILVER LINING
- UKRAINIAN BORN QUEENSTOWN BUSINESSMAN By Sue Fea A young Ukrainian-born Queenstown businessman has teamed up with a friend and some high profile connections to find jobs in New Zealand and around the world for Ukrainian refugees escaping the war. Mark Pavlyukovskyy, who started his own Venture Capital business, NZVC, in New Zealand early last year, was born and raised in Ukraine until the age of nine when he moved to the United States with his mum. The war in Ukraine has torn at his heart strings, with two half-sisters and a half-brother living there in the turmoil and tragedy. “One of my half-sisters has a husband now fighting in the war and she is constantly afraid and worried. It’s very unnerving and unstable,” says Mark. “They don’t know what awaits them the next day. They have friends who’ve been killed and the places we all grew up in are blown up and gone.” The whole situation has been very saddening and upsetting, says Mark, who was born nine months before the dissolution of the Soviet Union and is very proud of what his home country, Ukraine, has become during the past 30 years. “I’ve been through various stages of grief,” he says. ‘I was planning a trip there this year to see what it’s like now.” At first, he joined the masses who didn’t really believe Russian President Vladimir Putin would invade Ukraine. “At first it was very shocking and unexpected. I don’t think anyone seriously thought the invasion would happen,” he says. Mark, who now has employees in Russia and Ukraine, says he doesn’t know of any educated Russians who agree with the invasion and many are trying to flee. Key members for one of his
successful start-ups, Learn with Mochi, are based in Ukraine and Russia. “A lot of men can’t work or leave the country.” Mainly raised by his grandparents in Kharkiv after Mark’s parents parted ways when he was very young, his Mum studied English, commuting a lot to the United States where she also began research work. Once she started studying for her Master’s Degree Mark moved over to join her in Louisiana, moving cities repeatedly throughout his childhood. “It was definitely not an easy experience at the beginning. The longest I attended any school was high school in Texas for four years,” he says. “At the time it was kind of tough, but on the other hand it made me learn to make friends easily and adapt.” Since then he’s graduated from Princeton University, where he studied molecular biology, and started a PhD in computer science focusing on biology and cancer research at Oxford University. Mark has become renowned for his start-ups, Learn with Mochi and Piper, exiting Piper after raising $15 million in Venture Capital funding from top investors in Silicon Valley and around the world. Hardly surprising. His grandmother, whom he lived with for much of his childhood, was a maths professor. All Mark knew about New Zealand was what he’d learned in a fourth-grade project - that it had a lot of sheep. He was looking around for the world’s first entrepreneurial visa and that’s right where he found it. The enticement of an opportunity to learn about the local start-up ecosystem for a month or so as an Edmund Hilary Fellow was too good to turn down. Mark landed in New Zealand one day before the borders closed due to the main March
Open World’s website - openworld.co.nz - only went live in early March and is aimed at bringing Ukrainian and Russian people to this country, and other countries, to work and fill vital jobs. Mark has teamed up with another friend, Andre Rowell, who is one of the owners of M2 Magazine. “Andre and I started brainstorming as to how we could help Ukraine, says Mark. “We decided to leverage the incredible support of the business community here with, not only the humanitarian situation, but also the fact that we have growing talent shortages across most sectors, especially construction and tech,” he says. “One large scale developer we reached out to is worried that many projects will fall over due to a lack of workforce. This need for people to escape a warzone and displacement and a need for increased workers here really forms the basis for Open World,” says Mark. Within the first few hours of going live they had employers across New Zealand and the US offering up positions across a range of skill sets. That’s since broadened to Australia and other parts of the world. “For a lot of them it’s such a chaotic situation and they still haven’t figured out what they’re going to do,” says Mark. “At no point can they return to their previous life, but some are holding out.” “Even the folks I’ve helped evacuate from Ukraine or Russia are waiting to see, without making any sudden moves,” he says. “Over the next few weeks there will be a realisation that this could go on for five to 10 years. This will become a frozen conflict in Eastern Ukraine, as happened in the past.” In this respect, the scale of it all seems helpless, but even in such a devastating and chaotic situation the world is seeing untold examples of the power of the human spirit, dignity and bravery, he says. While creating opportunities for some people to work and live here can’t unwind the scale of damage for Ukraine, it’s a chance to offer some peace and dignity to those seeking to move here. And as Mark has proven with his journey, one person can have a profoundly positive impact on our community here while setting a path for others.

The Carlin is ready by Paul Taylor
Queenstown has a new luxury hotel just in time for the reopening of the borders.
“We are already getting bookings from New Zealanders and from overseas,” Carlin says.
The Carlin Boutique Hotel, in Hallenstein Street, officially opened this week and is taking bookings from April 1.
Queenstown Mayor Jim Boult officially opened the hotel at a private function on Thursday.
The one-of-a-kind property is a labour of love for developer and hospitality industry veteran, Kevin Carlin.
The Carlin’s in-house restaurant – ORO – is headed up by two chefs with Michelin Star experience – executive chef Thomas Barta, who worked with Gordon Ramsay, and head chef Yann Robert.
He’s designed the hotel and its extensive features based on five- and sixstar hotels in Europe. That means butlers, private chefs, masseurs, private entrance, extra-large indoor and outdoor living spaces and access to a private jet and luxury vehicles. The Carlin is spread over seven floors, offering a range of suites in one-, two, three- and four-bedroom configurations with 88 to 500sqm of indoor and outdoor living space per suite. The flexible room configuration allows it to offer what Carlin believes is largest penthouse suite in Australasia – a seven-bedroom, three-level suite connected by private lift and with a private entrance.
ORO means ‘gold’ in two languages; Italian and Spanish, a nod to the gold rush days. It opens this weekend. There will also be live music and stand-up comedy evenings, decadent afternoon high-teas and fashion shows, and the hotel’s facilities are also available for private functions. “There have been many challenges to overcome but this has been a true labour of love, and I’m immensely proud that The Carlin Boutique Hotel and its associated services will ensure Queenstown can deliver a visitor experience of the very highest standard of sophistication,” Carlin says.
To ensure exclusiveness and customer service, the hotel will only accommodate a maximum of 50 overnight guests at any one time. Carlin’s personally overseen the construction and interior decorating of the hotel, through the pandemic, and will remain as majority shareholder. “Building a hotel during a pandemic is far from ideal, but through good planning and hard work, we have been able to achieve the unimaginable and open our doors after just 14 months of construction. “The fact our opening is timed with the re-opening of NZ’s borders is serendipitous but we are very grateful for this seemingly perfect timing.” The Carlin overlooks the CBD, Lake Wakatipu and the Queenstown Bay area, from its elevated position on Queenstown Hill. “After a 30-year association with Queenstown, I know it is one of the most amazing places on the planet and I remain confident in the future of highvalue tourism in New Zealand,” he says. The entire property can be booked out and the Carlin has already taken a few such bookings. For functions, the hotel can accommodate up to 150 people in its 250sq m Grand Room.

CANCER SUFFERERS COULD BE MISSING OUT Cancer Society staff and volunteers offer support and advice for patients
by Sue Fea Cancer Society nursing staff and volunteers are concerned that too many cancer patients may be falling through the cracks locally, unaware of the free care and resources available to them. Otago Southland Cancer Society supportive care services manager Marie Wales says she’s especially concerned for many migrant families affected by cancer, and those living in less than adequate housing in the Wakatipu.
Marie says she’s very concerned for migrant patients with no New Zealand, or local, family. “We want to reduce the impact of cancer for them too.”
“We don’t know who has cancer in the Wakatipu, unless we get consented referrals, and those usually come through word of mouth,” she says. “GPs and the Southern District Health Board don’t always refer patients to us so we don’t know who is struggling and needs help.” “Everyone’s been going through a tough two years of uncertainty, but it’s even worse for cancer patients,” says Marie. “Many of them too have lost jobs, and face financial hardship and increased travel costs to Dunedin or Invercargill for treatment.” A shortage of radiation therapists at Southern DHB facilities means some Wakatipu cancer patients are currently travelling to Christchurch, and even Wellington, for radiation therapy, says Marie. “We’re here for not only their physical and emotional wellbeing, but also for practical help. It’s really tough on their mental health too, and their families who we also support.”
She’s also deeply concerned for any patients without adequate housing and heating locally. “Some of them live in camping grounds, or on buses on the side of the road,” she says. “We go to the patients and sit with them. You can see more than you can hear.” Some patients in the Wakatipu are living in overcrowded housing with lounges converted into bedrooms. “Prior to Covid times we saw a lot of hot bedding with people who worked the night shift swapping out their bed with another housemate who worked day shift,” says Marie. “We even had one patient living in a garage with a dirt floor.” The Cancer Society has trained staff and volunteers based in the Wakatipu, Wanaka and Central Otago, who know the communities they operate in and what resources are available. “Our services are all free and confidential and we connect patients with the necessary services. They may just have a question, but they can keep us in their back pocket for whenever they need us,” says Marie. “We’re all about empowering patients to be in control, but ensuring that no one faces cancer alone.”
Staff and volunteers are seeing some younger people with cancer locally now, some aged 29, 31, 38 and 39. Most prevalent in the south are prostate, bowel, breast cancers and melanoma. “We encourage people to be strong advocates for taking care of their health and to follow up and persist if they’re not happy with a diagnosis,” says Marie. “People can always ask if they can pay for private screening tests.” “It’s a scary time for these people. There’s a fear of the unknown so we make the time to listen and take the time to care. We’re there through chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, and can walk alongside them the whole time.” While it can be frustrating that some DHB staff and GPs don’t tell patients about the Cancer Society’s services, Marie says she understands the workload they’re facing and they do a wonderful job. “Over the years there’s been a bit of a disconnect between primary and secondary health community services. What we offer needs to be more embedded into the cancer care pathway. We’ve got to do better.”
“It’s been hard this past two years and our incredibly amazing team of part-time staff and volunteers are tired,” she says. “We’re a charity that operates with no regular government funding.” Covid restrictions and concerns mean they now have to do Rapid Antigen Tests on all volunteer drivers too and it’s not always easy to get access to those tests, says Marie. With skyrocketing petrol costs and patients needing days off work to get to out of town treatment, there’s been immense pressure financially, as well, says Marie. The Cancer Society even provides volunteer drivers to get patients to treatment at Dunstan or Southland hospitals wherever it can, while other patients have to travel on shuttles or buses. “They all say that someone else needs it more than them,” she says. “We tell them that they matter and it’s not about who’s worse, or where they live, or how much money they have. If they want to they can give back one day by volunteering at one of our fundraisers.”
