om and Margie Glaviano are exuberant people with a joie de vivre — a zest for living — and certainly a zest for celebrating and decorating for Christmas. “It all started in 2005 with a little friendly [decorating] competition with my neighbor, Dan Kirk, when we lived in Rockland,” near Sacramento, California, Tom said. “I’d put up a new decoration, and Dan would sneak out to watch me. “The next day his decorations would be embellished by something new. I really got him, though, when I put up three inflatable polar bears. He couldn’t top that.” It’s surprising to see the Glaviano’s current display because, from the street on which they live in the Waverly community near Scruggs, all that can be seen is a mailbox and a dark driveway. That driveway, however, curves and descends to reveal a wonderland of lights and inflatable objects.

A small Japanese maple tree is decorated with nonbreakable ornaments. An 8-foot tall Santa pirate ship is docked on the deck outside the Glaviano’s kitchen. Santa leaves a one-story tall helicopter — complete with turning rotors — with a bag full of presents.

There are 25-foot Leland cypress evergreen trees along both sides of the driveway, so, from the neighboring properties, there is no hint of the two 6-foot inflatable Santas or the larger Santa that serves as an archway when a visitor walks to the Glaviano’s front door. A Japanese maple tree is lit and bedecked with oversized, non-breakable ornaments. Last year, Tom added shower lights that are projected onto the tall evergreens in the driveway to make them look as if they have been strung with thousands of little lights. On the home’s main floor deck just outside the kitchen, sits an inflatable 8-foot pirate ship. Looking out into the backyard, visitors can see the top of

an even taller inflated helicopter with two turning rotors. The chopper, featuring Santa disembarking with his bag of toys, is best viewed from the home’s lower level family room or from outside. Also in the backyard, near the entrance to the dock, is another inflated archway; this one with toy soldiers on the sides. The Glavianos explained that it’s not such an expensive obsession because they shop for new decorating items after Christmas when “everything is 75 percent off.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

On the home’s main floor deck just outside the kitchen, sits an inflatable 8-foot pirate ship.

The outside decorating takes about six hours. The inflatables are controlled by timers that inflate at dusk and deflate later, well after dark. There are indoor decorations too, but these take longer to install — there are garlands, window decorations and a three-section, pre-lighted tree on which Tom added large bows, made with a Bowdabra bow-making device from a local craft store. There’s also a large Family Feud game on an easel that Tom invented after polling friends and family for their

responses to Christmas-related questions. The Glavianos have lived at the lake since 2012, after having moved here at the urging of their daughter and her family who live in Roanoke. “I really love being near our daughter, and we get to see the grandchildren, Allison and Lauren, about once a week,” Margie said. “The grandchildren’s favorite decoration is probably the inflated Santa arch, but they haven’t seen the pirate ship or the helicopter yet.” In case you are wondering where Tom’s three polar bears are, he got rid of them. When the family moved from California, they stored everything in storage containers. It was more cost effective to buy new inflatables than to rent an extra container. Tom gave the polar bears to Dan Kirk, that competitive neighbor back in Rockland. And despite having given up those bears, Tom feels that he actually outdid his neighbor. “Eat your heart out, Dan Kirk,” he said. “We’re in a magazine!”

When looking for high-quality gloves, skip the cotton ones. They wear out too quickly. Instead opt for durable gloves that will last for years. The Velcro closing is efficient and helps keep dirt from getting inside the glove while you’re working. Good garden centers usually carry this brand. In winter, Boninti turns to Wells Lamont’s insulated grain deerskin gloves, which retail for about $23. They fit beautifully and keep her hands toasty warm. “I’ve tried other brands, but these are the warmest,” she said. Boninti said her winter gardening life was transformed the year her sister gave her Duluth Trading Company knee-high Stay-Put Performance compression socks. She wears them over silk under socks. The combination keeps her body warm down to the toes even in 20-degree weather. “I’ll work in the garden for 12 hours and not feel chilled,” she said. The company makes compression socks for both men and women. In Boninti’s opinion, the well-shod gardener wears shoes or boots by Ariats. “Ariats are waterproof and last,” she said. She also has Wolverines, which are waterproof, comfortable and have good traction, but she finds the steel toes make her feet cold in winter and add unnecessary weight to the boot.

The company makes different models for different uses and hand size. The F-6 model is ideal for small hands. F-9 is designed for left-handed people. Boninti also likes their folding handsaws that fit in a side pants pocket so it’s always handy. For cutting flowers and doing light trimming, Boninti’s favorite brand is Saboten. The Teflon-coated blades are made of high-quality carbon steel and are very sharp. The contoured grip is shock absorbing, and the closing safety latch secures firmly. The package size also lends itself to fitting in a Christmas stocking. For loppers, Boninti prefers Bahco. These loppers are expensive, costing around $150, but are worth

The company website has a sharpening instruction video. ■ Velcro Plant ties: A newish, innovative garden product is green garden Velcro. It’s ideal for tying trees or other plants to support stakes. The green color is discreet, and with easy-fasten Velcro, you can tighten or loosen the tie as needed. ■ Jute twine: Natural, biodegradable jute twine is the only twine you should use in the garden. Other products are made of plastic, which never rots. ■ Poison iVy scrubs: If you can apply the treatment immediately, Ivy Wash Poison Ivy Cleanser is an excellent product for cleaning off the rash-inducing oils. andra and Kirby Richardson of Moneta love to travel, typically taking a couple of trips each year to visit national parks and monuments. But there was one trip the couple had longed to do for years, and in June, their wish to hike the Wave in the Coyote Buttes North area of Arizona finally came true. “I don’t remember where I saw a picture of it, but I thought, ‘Man, I’d like to see that,’” Kirby said of the stunningly beautiful, multi-colored sandstone rock formation that lies near the border of northern Arizona and southern Utah. The Wave got its name in part from its undulating, swirling appearance that resembles an enormous wave. Because the Bureau of Land Management, which manages the wilderness area, restricts the number of hikers allowed there to just 20 per day — 10 from advance online applications and 10 via walkin lottery — seeing the Wave firsthand is a rarity. To enter the lottery, applicants must pay a $5 fee, and once granted a permit, pay an additional $7 per person per day. In a 17-minute video posted to the Coyote Buttes North Lottery Application web page that viewers are required to watch before applying for a permit, the narrator explains why. “By limiting the number of hikers, we hope to maintain the pristine nature of this area for you and other visitors well into the future.” In a blog post titled “Everything you need to know about hiking the Wave,” writer Josh Allen warns readers about the difficulty in getting a permit. “In 2014 alone, there were approximately 50,000 applicants, which means 7,300 people were allowed access with a 14.6 percent success rate, and it’s only going to get harder to get in,” he wrote. “When you apply, you apply four months in advance, and you pick three days in that month,”

Kirby recalled. “Some of those days would have 1,500 to 2,000 people apply, and we’d get an email saying ‘you were unsuccessful.’” Still, they kept at it, applying to hike primarily during spring and fall months, “because we knew it would be hot out there,” Sandra said. But in February, Kirby applied again, this time for June. After two years of trying, they were granted permission to hike there on June 7. “When he got word that we got the permits, we got trekking poles and tried to get ourselves in shape,” Sandra said. Knowing this would be no cake walk, the couple practiced hiking along the trails at Moneta Park near Downtown Moneta and Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston with their poles and packs. Because temperatures can soar into the 90s in that part of the U.S., the couple had read that they

needed to carry at least a gallon of water apiece for the daylong hike. After spending the night in nearby Kanab, Utah, the couple drove to the trailhead. Driving the desolate desert roads can be tricky, too. The Bureau of Land Management advises drivers to use only high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles because the all-dirt roads in the area can become impassable in inclement weather. Armed with a paper map that included a series of pictures to serve as landmarks and the GPS on their smartphones, the couple set out on their trek. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

“When we started out we were all by ourselves,” said Sandra, recalling that a couple of faster-paced hikers passed them along the way. Not only can the journey be difficult because of heat and sandy terrain, but the trail isn’t wellmarked, either. Fortunately, Sandra and Kirby only got off track once, going about a quarter-mile out of their way. “We veered around for a little bit,” Kirby said. The narrator on the web page video warns hikers about this: “Visitors hiking to the Wave should know there are no official rock cairns and very few trail markers along the route. This can make navigation difficult.” Nonetheless, the couple hiked for 3 ½ miles until they reached a steep, sandy incline. Once they crested the hill, Sandra and Kirby said they were in awe of what they saw. “It’s really worth going in to see,” Kirby said. “It’s probably the only place in the world like that.” As temperatures hovered around 97 degrees that day, Sandra and Kirby joined the handful of visitors who were already there huddled in the shade to take a break. “I guess we were the oldest ones on the walk by far,” said Sandra (she was 74 at the time and Kirby is 75). But despite the heat and strenuousness of the hike, the Richardsons said it was worth the wait and the effort it took to get there. “Everywhere you look, it’s a Kodak moment,” Kirby said. Snapping dozens of pictures, Kirby and Sandra put their favorites into a photo book for a keepsake, which they keep on a bookshelf with photo books from previous trips to other national parks and monuments. For Father’s Day, the couple’s daughter gave Kirby an enlarged photo on canvas of the Wave that he took during the trip. It sits atop a fireplace mantel in their Beechwood Shores home to remind them of their once-in-a-lifetime experience. “It was one of the hardest hikes we’ve done,” Sandra added. “It was a relief to finally make it up there.”

For more than a dozen years, Runk & Pratt has offered a specialized memory care program, which includes a regular daily routine and activities specifically geared toward residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia. “That’s the fastest growing part of our industry,” Brian said. The statistics back up that assessment, too. Every 66 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association’s website. There are more than five million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, but by 2050, that number could climb to 16 million. Several years ago, during a Christmas party, a staff member asked Vickie if she had heard about enclosed multi-sensory environments called Snoezelen rooms that could help calm Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and improve their overall mood. “She said, ‘Go home and Google it,’” Vickie recalled. “I was just amazed.” Vickie told her son, Christopher, about it and asked him to help design a room for Runk & Pratt. “I think he stayed up all night researching it,” Vickie said of her son, who has grown up in the family business. “By the morning, he was so excited.” Snoezelen comes from the Dutch words “snuffelen,” which means to seek, and “doezelen,” which means to doze or relax. The rooms are

designed to engage a person’s senses, promote relaxation, help mental development and can be used for therapy. “We came up with an under the sea theme,” Vickie said. Runk & Pratt’s Forest location was the first room to open, followed by the SML site. The rooms feature vertical floor-to-ceiling bubble tubes, strands of LED lights hanging from the ceiling, images of underwater sea life projected onto the walls as well

Instead of one Snoezelen room, this facility will have two, Brian said, along with interactive hallways. “We’re providing them with something to do,” Vickie said. “It’s all sensory by touch; it’s something where everybody can be involved in.” Day rooms will provide opportunities for the residents to do tasks that they might have once enjoyed when they lived independently. For example, there will be a baby crib and rocking chair for residents to mimic caring for an infant, an

Although there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s, staying active, eating healthy, maintaining social connections and taking prescription medication are several ways seniors can slow the disease’s progression, Brian said. While Runk & Pratt offers a slate of daily activities at all of its locations, the company also has looked for other opportunities in the communities it serves. One example of this is Runk & Pratt’s partnership with Carilion Clinic, a Roanoke-based, nonprofit health care organization, to open Carilion Wellness - Westlake, an 18,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility designed specifically for seniors 50 and older.

“We want to give you strength to do what you do on a daily basis — climbing steps, lifting the grandkids, swinging the golf club,” said Bud Grey, vice president of Carilion Wellness. Amenities include exercise equipment, an indoor pool for group exercise, a warm-water therapy pool, pickleball courts and a virtual golf simulator, as well as meeting space for health education classes, a bakery and a cafe with a wellness-inspired menu. “It’s called the Vitality Cafe, and it’s called that for a reason,” Vickie said. While parts of Carilion Wellness - Westlake are for members only, others, such as the cafe and

This project will complement the patio homes and assisted living components that are already available. “That’s the middle step that we did not have,” Brian said. Runk & Pratt is growing in other communities, too. Last year, the company purchased golf courses in Forest and in Hurt in anticipation of adding more residential living options and amenities for seniors. “We want our seniors to stay in their community, to stay with their friends and loved ones and not feel like they have to move somewhere else to get the services they need,” Brian said. “If and when they need it, it’s here for them.” That shift back to the family model is important as well. “It’s our responsibility to make sure our moms and dads are taken care of,” Vickie said. “When we’re forgetting our seniors, we’re forgetting an awful lot of the population.”

ways to stay healthy for the holidays This time of year, as you look forward to visits from family and friends, one unwelcome visitor could really dampen the holiday spirit — a cold or, even worse, the flu. Since family photos and feasts at the dining table aren’t complemented by a box of tissues or a miserable sore throat, here are some tips for staying healthy provided by Carilion Clinic and compiled by Laker magazine’s Lindsey Wagnon.

Do a two-for-one With full-table meals and more home-baked goodies than you can count, your diet could become more empty calories and less vitamin-rich. Without the proper nutrients, your body could struggle against the spread of viruses. Be intentional with healthful eating during the holidays. When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re planning meals and making grocery lists, schedule at least two daily meals that are heavy on protein and vegetables, while light on carbs and sugar. This will help balance out richer brunch or dinner feasts.

By saying goodnight at a reasonable hour, you’ll be helping prevent a weakened immune system, daytime fatigue and ensuring you have the energy you’ll need for all-day activities.

Keep it clean Washing hands often or using hand sanitizer may seem obvious in preventing illness, but those aren’t the only ways to keep germs at bay. Surfaces in your home and vehicle should get a quick wipe-down more frequently during busier holiday months. More errands and events means more opportunities to bring germs home, and if you’re entertaining guests, the chance for unwelcome intruders only multiples. Of course, more guests also may mean more germs, so don’t be shy about putting cleaning products in plain sight.

ark Young caught the writing bug after he retired six years ago and has spent most of his free time writing. Not only has he received regional awards and recognition for his work, but he also recently released his first novel titled “No One Has or Ever Will.” The fictional, coming-of-age story follows budding writer Michael and his friends, Judy, Rick and Nikki through their high school and college years during the mid- to late-1960s. “I’m writing about four characters’ vision of life,” Young said. There’s also Mrs. Markowitz, a wellliked, high school English teacher, who mentors and encourages Michael’s writing. “She’s a somewhat mysterious, but prominent character in the book,” Young said.

Because he grew up during the era that included the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., race riots and the Vietnam War, Young draws on his own experiences to weave through the story. “I don’t think you can write about things unless you have some experience with them,” he said. And from Young’s recollection about that decade, it wasn’t peace and love, but rather violent protests and uprisings. “I think we were very close to a social revolution.” The strengths of the female characters are central to the storyline, too. “I really do believe that’s the untold story of the ’60s,” Young said of the women’s rights movement during this time. “All the women in this book are very strong females; they’re stronger than the males.” After graduating high school, Michael and Rick end up at the same liberal arts

reader REvIEw Black-eyed Susans By Julia Heaberlin Julia Heaberlin’s third novel, “Black-Eyed Susans,” is a thrilling tale that leaves readers guessing and speculating up until the very last page. With interesting use of flashbacks, courtroom transcripts, epistolary and flowing narrative, this story weaves a tangled web of a friendship that has taken a seriously wrong turn. The book focuses on Tessa Cartwright, now in her late 30s, who survived an attack by the Black-Eyed Susan killer, named for the flowers he spread over the graveyard where he dumped his victims. The killer sits on death row in Texas; however, Tessa isn’t convinced that the right man is behind bars because she has been receiving black-eyed susans

The first part of the novel is told between flashbacks of Tessa present day and her younger self, Tessie, from 1995 just after she was attacked. What we mostly get of Tessie is her sessions with her psychiatrist who is helping to heal her psychosomatic blindness. Tessie wants nothing to do with the treatment and fights her doctor throughout the process. Tessie’s blindness doesn’t affect just her eyes, but also her memories of who her attacker is and what he looks like, thus leaving her to trust that the prosecutor has caught the right guy. Present-day Tessa has a teenage daughter, Charlie, and isn’t at all convinced that the man on death row is responsible for the crime against her. She begins to help lawyers build an appeal with the help of a forensic anthropologist who orders the bodies

Throughout the writing process, Young said he received valuable input from his fellow Lake Writers (he is the group’s president). “I would not have written the book without them,” he said. A native of Pennsylvania, Young graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a certificate in teaching from Ursinus College and did graduate work at Temple and Penn State universities. For several years, he taught psychology and the humanities in Pennsylvania’s Perkiomen Valley School District. When he tendered his resignation from teaching to pursue a career as a manufacturing rep in the furniture industry, Young approached the school board. “The thing I’m most proud about in my working career is that the school board rejected my resignation and asked

of the other victims to be exhumed so that DNA can be taken for identification. It is revealed in the flashbacks with Tessie that she had a best friend named Lydia who helped her through her trauma after the attack but mysteriously disappeared a few days after taking the stand in the case. It’s not until the second part of the book that readers are able to become a fly on the wall during the trial with courtroom transcripts. These passages help readers understand the grueling process of a trial and exactly what type of questions the victims are asked when they take the stand. With Heaberlin’s ease of writing, the picture becomes vivid of what exactly is at stake in appealing the court’s decision. The third part is told in tandem with Tessa and Lydia from 1995. It’s in this part where the story really gets meat on its bones. Up

until now it’s all merely speculation, but having Lydia’s point of view helps to answer questions that the reader has been asking from the beginning of the book. The ending is surprising and definitely worthy of the genre of thriller. Some readers may have unanswered questions or a yearning for more explanation from Heaberlin, but her use of character development and vivid detail more than make up for it. Heaberlin has a knack for knowing when and where to put plot points, details and character interactions to push the plot forward and to draw the reader in. Dear Family, As Thanksgiving draws near, and we make our plans to gather and give thanks for our many good fortunes, I want to express to everyone how lucky I am to be in the midst of such a wonderfully loving, cockeyed, verbose, opinionated tribe. I am truly blessed. I am also becoming somewhat annoyed. I find myself needing to reiterate how T-Days go down in my house. I do not operate a restaurant. My kitchen is my domain. Mama’s rules. I take great pride in the meal I prepare each fourth Thursday of November. It’s my way of cooking; period. Yes, I know that sounds harsh. When you’re over 50 you’re allowed to remove some of your filters; it’s the law. Our holiday meal, served at 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, will remain the same sumptuous traditional feast it has been for the past 25 years. There will be roasted turkey stuffed with savory bread dressing, basted in drippings. Stiff mashed potatoes will

be ladled with thick brown gravy made from turkey grease and flour. Green beans will be appropriately cooked with pork and salt until tender. Sweet potato pudding topped with brown sugar and marshmallows will be served alongside yeast rolls and real butter. Grandma’s etched glass water goblets at each place setting on the table will be filled with the only beverage apropos for such a festive occasion: sweet tea. Dessert will be an assortment of pies to include apple, pumpkin and pecan with a side of rich, fully-fatted vanilla ice cream. There will be no Tofurkey. There will be no fat-free anything. This is not a vegan-friendly zone. We can make a salad for any vegetarians, but only because I have a big heart and I like bleu cheese dressing. There will be no skinny desserts. Anything that sits still long enough will have a dollop of whipped cream dropped on top. Yes, Johnny, please bring your new girlfriend. But no, she cannot crash on a futon in the garage for the weekend. In this family we watch football. We live for football. Football is our passion. I’d like to remind everyone that last year’s diatribe from Johnny’s now ex-girlfriend regarding the violent, misogynistic and barbaric attributes of the football culture did not go over well. Warn your guests: football reigns supreme here, and we don’t take too kindly to those who feel differently. Go Noles! Last year the decision was made that everyone would check their politics at the door. Good idea. We all will agree to this code of conduct again this year. We are way too headstrong a family, and I, in no way, want to risk a heated political discussion. I’m sure you remember all too well the great food fight of 2000. I’m still finding dried peas under the rugs. Safe travels and I look forward to seeing all of you in a few short weeks. Oh, and remember to wear your fat pants.
