his time last year, we were in the throes of the lake’s 50th anniversary celebration. This 51st year promises to be just as stellar with many of the same events returning, including the Jersey Girls’ Walk for the Animals and the Cardboard Boat Regatta later this summer. This month, we’re kicking off our four-part Jewel of the Blue Ridge series. Each month through August, we’ll take a look at what makes our little corner of the world unique. We’ll feature profiles on area artists and offer ideas on trips you can take within a day’s drive of the lake. We’ll also look at lake homes that you might not read about in other issues of Laker. And, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to get your hands dirty, our gardening columnist offers pointers on adding color to your landscape.

By Jason Dunovant jason.dunovant @smithmountainlaker.com 721-4675 (ext. 407)

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a trio of recent thefts from businesses near Westlake Corner. The first theft occurred sometime during the evening of March 24 when a patio set was stolen from True Organics on Scruggs Road, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Maj. Mike Bowman said employees noticed the furniture

was missing when they arrived for work the following day. Outdoor wicker furniture was reported stolen March 27 from David James Homes’ model in LakeWatch Plantation near the Franklin County Family YMCA. The General Store on Scruggs Road also reported two outdoor chairs and a picnic table were stolen March 29. Rita Grisetti, co-owner of The General Store, said she never expected something like that would ever happen. “We have never had any problems.” Grisetti said that she once acci-

dentally left store items on display outside overnight, but when she returned the following morning, the items were still there. “Now we are paranoid,” Grisetti said, adding that she will no longer be as trusting. The two chairs taken from The General Store had been secured by a cable that was cut. Grisetti said the 10-foot picnic table would have needed a lot of strength to lift, as well as a large truck or trailer to haul it off. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reported it has no leads at this time. Investigators are look-

ing at surveillance video from area businesses as well as checking with area pawn shops and websites to see if there has been any effort to resell the items, said Capt. Paul Caldwell. The sheriff’s office asks that business owners and residents consider moving their lawn furniture indoors or to a place where it can be monitored by security cameras or alarms to prevent future thefts. Anyone with information is asked to contact Caldwell at 352-5174 or paul. caldwell@franklincountyva.gov.

Josh Gilbert of Roanoke, winner of the 5K, crosses a stream along the trail.

Dozens of runners braved the steep slopes and trails around the Smith Mountain Dam for the Dam 50K and 5K on April 1. This is the second year for the event that added a new challenge for the 5K runners. This year both the 50K and the 5K participants faced a 1,300-foot climb during one section of the course. Known as the “death climb” by runners, it was added to make the 5K one of the most difficult around, according to race organizer Lauren Acker. “The death climb is a big part of the 50K race,” Acker said. “We decided to make it part of the 5K so it would be the hardest 5K ever.” While the area had experienced heavy rain over the past few days, runners experienced good weather for race day. The course was mostly dry by the start of the

race. “The weather was beautiful,” Acker said. The top finisher in the 5K was Josh Gilbert of Roanoke with a time of 31:48. He admitted that the 1,300-foot climb was difficult. “I don’t know if there is a harder 5K anywhere around here,” Gilbert said. Erica Martin of Moneta was the top female finisher in the 5K with a time of 1:02:35. Stephen Mohr of Arlington, Virginia was the top finisher in the 50K with a time of 4:25:32. He placed fourth in last year’s 50K at the dam. Lindsay DiMarco of Durham, North Carolina was the top female finisher in the 50K with a time of 5:52:55.

color theory in the garden

olor is a powerful force in the garden. It can soothe, excite and even help a space feel larger or smaller. Armed with a little knowledge and the willingness to engage in trial and error, you can create color combinations that set the exact tone you want in your garden.

Putting color theory to work

If you put two hues together that are next to each other on the color wheel, such as blue and violet, they take on the properties of each other and blend. These monochromatic color schemes are generally restful on the eye, but not particularly exciting. The early 20th century British garden maven Gertrude Jekyll complained that people creating a color-theme garden often sacrifice a successful composition for the sake of their chosen theme. In her typical opinionated style, she wrote, “It is a curious thing that people will sometimes spoil some garden project for the sake of a word. For instance a blue garden, for beauty’s sake, may be hungering for a group of white lilies, or something of the palest lemon-yellow, but is not allowed to have it because it is called the blue garden, and there must be no other flowers ... Any experienced colorist knows that the blues will be more telling — more purely blue — by the juxtaposition of rightly placed complementary color.”

Color combinations to increase your pulse rate

A bold approach to color composition is to combine contrasting, complementary colors. The artist Vincent Van Gogh was a proponent of lively color combinations. As he poetically put it in 1888 in a letter to his sister, Wilhelmina, “There are colors, which cause each other to shine brilliantly, which form a couple, which complete each other like man and woman.” He suggested combining cornflowers, white chrysanthemums and marigolds for a motif in white, blue and orange; heliotrope and yellow roses for a lilac and yellow motif; and poppies or red geraniums set among green leaves for a red and green combination. More recently, in his book “Color for Adventurous Gardeners,” the British plantsman Christopher Lloyd encouraged the bold use of color to create excitement, an element he believed was essential to

LEFT. Christopher Lloyd, the renowned English plantsman and garden author, advocated using bold color combinations. He practiced what he preached at his garden at Great Dixter in East Sussex, England. BELOW. The combination of the mauve-pink red valerian (Centranthus ruber) and the hybrid tea rose ‘Yves Piaget’ makes a pretty monochromatic display. Named after the famous Swiss clockmaker, the vigorously flowering ‘Yves Piaget’ rose combines strong color with rich fragrance.

successful gardening. “Two colors may shout at each other,” he wrote, “but they are shouting for joy.” He advocated using color contrasts because these color combinations have the most “pop.” He suggested combining the purple flowering Verbena bonariensis with a red dahlia such as ‘Genadier,’ adding the reddish foliage of Canna indica ‘Purpurea’ for further emphasis. Blue and yellow is another classic contrast. Lloyd combined Verbena bonariensis with the yellow-green flowers of Patrinia scabiosifolia and placed blue flowering Iris siberica against the chartreuse yellow foliage of Bowles sedge (Carex elata ‘Aurea’). A show-stopping combination is the boldly red Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ and a metallic blue sea holly, Eryngium alpinum. Or try the red crocosmia with the unabashedly yellow Coreopsis grandiflora.

White and gray

A delicate spray of white flowers, such as baby’s breath, white rose campion (Lychnis coronaria ‘Alba’), or Crambe cordifolia can create a sensation of shimmer in the garden, like white fairy lights strung in a tree. On the other hand, a bold clump of white tends to punch holes in the design, leaving a visual void. Use white to make colors appear brighter, giving them definition. In his novel “East of Eden,” John Steinbeck wrote, “Every petal of blue lupin is edged with white, so that a field of lupins is more blue than you can imagine.” Gray foliage is a valuable asset in the garden, helping to link disparate colors. But not just any gray will work. Silvery grays tend to be too showstopping, grabbing all the attention rather than being a silent partner. However, blue-gray or plain gray

are highly useful for bringing cohesion between two conflicting colors and transitioning from one color scheme to another. Gray also is excellent to calm glare or harsh sunlight, conditions prevalent in gardens next to water. Seeing flowering plants side-by-side is a huge help in finding the right combinations. Walk around the garden with a newly purchased plant to find the right marriage with your established plants. At the garden center, place flowering plants next to each other to find the color and texture combinations that make your heart sing. Combining plants for the best color combinations is a fine art that often relies on trial and error. Even

with lots of careful planning, most people make occasional mistakes. As Vita Sackwell-West wrote, “Gardening is largely a question of mixing one sort of plant with another sort of plant, and of seeing how they marry happily together; and if you see that they don’t marry happily together then you must hoick one of them out and be quite ruthless about it. That is the only way to garden.” Just two years before he died, Claude Monet wrote, “I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.” Certainly within the gardening world he is as well-known for the beautiful garden he planted in Giverny, France as he is for his luminous paintings that capture and preserve ephemeral moments of changing light. In his garden, Monet painted with plants. You can, too. Catriona Tudor Erler is a freelance garden writer, photographer and speaker who divides her time between SML and Charlottesville. here’s little that makes an old boat look and feel its age more than worn upholstery. Being aboard a vessel with faded, cracked and torn seats, sun pads, bolsters and side panels isn’t very appealing ... or, for that matter, comfortable. And it’s not just old boats. The occasional mishap with a water ski fin, fishing lure or a dog’s toenails can instantly damage even a relatively new boat’s upholstery. Once the magic of a pristine cockpit is stolen by an accidental cut, rip or broken seam, the blemish instantly becomes something that everyone — especially the owner — notices whenever they come aboard. Unlike a boat’s hull and decks, where signs of aging can be mitigated with thorough wash-downs and periodic effort with polishing compound and marine wax, a respectable job of repairing upholstery usually requires experience and specialized equipment. Sure, keeping the vinyl clean and supple with an annual mineral spirits wipe-down will help keep it from cracking; the oils left behind after buffing, say experts, definitely have a prolonging effect. But when rips, tears and fraying seams start appearing,

the expedient DIY duct-tape or over-the-counter adhesive repair rarely yields satisfying results. Smith Mountain Lake boat owners, though, are fortunate to have some pros they can turn to for upholstery repairs that will help make their boats look new again, ready for years more fun with family and friends. When Ed and Sandy McNamara moved to SML in 2011, Ed soon learned from a neighbor in the Thunder Ridge neighborhood of Bedford County that there was need for boat repair services. Jeff Prowse had just purchased Mitchell’s Marina on Craddock Creek. Ed found himself helping ready the marina for its first summer under Prowse’s ownership. As they repaired docks and freshened landscaping, Ed mentioned that Sandy had been sewing since age 10. “Great, can she repair a bimini top?” Prowse asked. A couple days later, the McNamaras had their first repair contract, which they completed in a day’s time. Thus began a win-win routine — Prowse would drop off a torn cushion on his way home from work and pick it up the next morning. Indeed, helping keep SML Boat Rental’s fleet of runabouts and pontoons looking sharp was a sizable portion of the couple’s

new business that first year. “We quickly realized that an upholsterer who could provide in-and-out, rapid turn-around service would be a good fit for the SML market,” Ed said. The McNamaras bought commercial-grade sewing machines and set up shop in a spare room of their house. Later, they expanded into their garage where large tables, racks for upholstery material and Ed’s woodworking tools (used for recreating rotted frames and cushion backings) have facilitated an expansion of their SML Vinyl Solutions business — which still specializes in timely repairs. “Sure, boat rental operators need their boats ready to run, not tied up in a lengthy repair cycle,” Sandy said. “But even private owners may need a repair done for company the next weekend. They really appreciate our ability to quickly give them a free estimate, commit to a [completion] date and deliver as promised.” Lake resident Tom Smith hired the McNamaras to put a new bimini top and cushion upholstery on his 1995 Premier pontoon. “The boat never left my dock,” Smith said. “They came, measured, then came back and installed. We were away all the while. Fantastic way to get a boat fixed up.” SML Vinyl Solutions also specializes in on-site

personal watercraft saddle reupholstery as well as sew-in-place seam repairs. They can also bring along a portable sewing machine to facilitate finishing work that requires multiple measurements and fittings. Patrick Bush, owner of Got It Covered Custom Canvas and Repair, took his business full-time about six years ago. He operates out of a shop at Bayside Marina on Lakewood Forest Road. Bush estimates that he’s completed reupholstery and canvas work on more than 100 boats and personal watercraft. “Nearly half of our jobs are PWC saddle replacements,” Bush said. “But we do full boat interiors and canvas work as well. In between, it is selected seats, sun pads and carpet replacements.” Prices for recovering a typical personal watercraft saddle starts at around $250 but can go more than $600 for larger, multi-color or complex jobs. New digital measuring and patterning equipment is providing a step-change in those aspects of the operation, Bush said. “It’s a CAD (computeraided) setup where software drives a plotter to make patterns based on laser measurements,” he said. “The laser gun even allows us to take precise measurements right at someone’s dock.” Got It Covered will also make house calls to retrieve

parts that need reupholstering or to transport a boat to its shop via the company trailer. “Many of our customers don’t have trailers and really appreciate that service,” Bush said. Bush is a member of Marine Fabricators’ Association, which, according to its website, is “dedicated to assisting marine fabrication industry professionals with their businesses.” When it comes to upholstery care, Bush follows the association’s recommendations. “You get many more years of service if you keep it clean and protect it from sun degradation,” he said. “We recommend regular application of 303 UV protectant [available from Amazon or Wal-Mart]. Household vinegar will tackle mildew and mold without damaging the fabric or thread, but many times mold takes hold from inside the foam and is almost impossible to remove. When we reupholster, we use a layer of silk film under the vinyl to keep mold from going deep.” Another SML upholstery business is Barb’s Upholstery in Hardy. Owner Barb Enslow has been in business for more than 30 years and specializes in repair of vinyl cushions and panels, as well as replacement of mesh fabric on outdoor furniture.

Spring spruce-up

Interior designers look at what’s trending for 2017

TOP. New furniture in lighter colors, along with a matching area rug, can brighten up any room. The trend for 2017 is distressed finishes on furniture, flooring and beams. OPPOSITE PAGE RIGHT. For anyone on a budget, giving a room a fresh coat of paint and adding throw pillows are two of the least expensive ways to give a room a new look.

pring is here, which means summer entertaining is just around the corner. Soon, your home will be the spot for hosting family, friends and neighbors who, like you, have been waiting three long seasons to enjoy summer at Smith Mountain Lake. While you’re tackling that spring cleaning to-do list, you may notice a few areas of your home that could use more than a good scrub. In fact, you may decide it’s time for a design update. A fresh coat of paint, new furniture or a less worn rug in the hallway. Luckily for you, we’ve got the scoop on the interior — and exterior — trends that will give your hardworking host home fresh appeal just in time for summer entertaining. Two area designers — Kris Willard, owner of Interiors by Kris, and Janice Thurman, owner of Envisions Distinctive Interiors — recently offered their insights into what’s trending. What design trends do you expect to be most popular in 2017? Willard: Trending in 2017 is the increased use of outdoor space, decks, docks, patios and outdoor rooms with complete outdoor kitchens and fireplaces. Thurman: The trends for 2017 continue to be distressed finishes on flooring, beams and furniture.

“I love the use of white-washed boards on the ceiling and stained beams to complement the floors.” Janice Thurman

Shades of gray are popular for cabinets and walls. The Pantone color for the year is green. It’s a yellowgreen shade that makes you think of the first days of spring. Home interiors always follow fashion, and in that regard, the mixing of patterns will be popular.

TOP. Woven wicker furniture that includes fabrics designed to withstand the elements and prevent fading is in demand for outdoor living rooms. ABOVE. Blinds or similar screening devices on windows can preserve lake views and open space.

MAY 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

What is one of your personal favorite trends emerging? Willard: The newest emerging trend, which is very exciting for us, is the use of Sunbrella and Crypton fabrics for interior and exterior upholstery. These fabrics provide protection from stains and fading, and will allow their appearance to stay fresh for years. Thurman: I love the use of white-washed boards on the ceiling and stained beams to complement the floors. What trends have you noticed emerging at Smith Mountain Lake in particular? Thurman: I am hearing more and more clients who like the use of shiplap as an accent from watching HGTV. Willard: [There’s been an] increased interest in making the most of outdoor spaces. What advice do you have for SML residents who want to make the most of lake views or complement the lake scenery from their interiors? Willard: I would recommend using blinds or similar screening devices on your windows to

preserve your lake view and open your window space. Blinds above or inside the window frame can be raised for daytime enjoyment. We recommend Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Screen Shades or Silhouettes. To complement the windows, a fabric drapery panel can be added to either side of the window. Thurman: When appropriate, I recommend swivel chairs facing the lake so homeowners and guests can enjoy their view and swivel around for conversation or other activities. What tips do you have for someone who wants to update their space without blowing their budget? Thurman: Paint is the least expensive way to update any space and create big impact for less. Willard: Paint is a great way to update space. Many homeowners are painting kitchen cabinets and paneling which tends to darken the living space. Or purchase a new throw rug, add fun throw pillows and some new accessories, and you will feel like you have a new home. If it’s time to make your home the neighborhood trendsetter, both professionals encourage a consultation from an expert to get the most value from your investment. With knowledgeable guidance and a little effort, your home will be dressed to impress in time for the busy summer season.

“W

e had bought a lot in Mountain View Shores in 2001, and a year later, we were at the lake looking at house plans, and suddenly I panicked thinking about caring for another house — all those leaves in the gutters, all that lawn to mow, all that upkeep,” Suzanne Rudy recalled. Suzanne voiced her concerns to their realtor at the time, the late John McGreevey. “He said, ‘Maybe you should consider a condo for a few years, and then sell it and build on your lot when you are more ready. A lot of people do that.’ But I knew my husband was not fond of condos.”

46

MAY 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Weeks later, Suzanne was talking to a friend who had a condo at Vista Pointe. “She said a doctor was selling his condo there,” Suzanne said. “‘Give him a call,’ she encouraged. ‘My family just loves it here.’” As that conversation unfolded, Suzanne’s husband Byron was cruising the lake in a pontoon boat he had just picked up from a dealer. “After I phoned the Vista Pointe manager, I called Byron and suggested he boat over and look at it,” Suzanne said. “Byron responded, ‘I’m right in front of Vista Pointe now.’ Surprisingly — and mostly just to have a boating destination — he motored in, tied up and met the manager to look at the units that were on the market.”

Byron was impressed to say the least. “The views just blew me away,” he said. “From the living rooms you saw all the way up the Roanoke, and from the bedrooms you had the water and mountain views. We bought a unit that day. That was 14 very happy years ago.” Vista Pointe encompasses two buildings with a total of 48 units. The Rudys are in the newer, shorter building, and since their unit is on the second floor, they have no elevator, no lobby, no long hallway. They walk up a few steps from the parking lot and are at their doorway. “We never feel crowded here,” Suzanne said, gesturing to the sheltered beach area. “We like to

bring our drinks outside and enjoy the sunset at one of these sites.” There is also a pool area with a large deck, tennis courts, a basketball court, covered boat slips, personal watercraft lifts, a clubhouse, three separate white sand beaches with tables and umbrellas and a gazebo. One aspect of condo living that the Rudys especially appreciate is that the property is well-managed and the outdoor and common areas are well-maintained. There are certain rules to follow, such as turning off the main water valve when leaving for any extended period. And should owners prefer to just enjoy their lake time and never clean, the manager can arrange for cleaning services. “The property manager checks each condo every week, and we might get an email telling us we forgot to close the slider all the way, but that she took care of it,” Suzanne said. Byron appreciates having that peace of mind. “It’s great to have someone watching the property,” he

said. “She’ll call us before a storm to offer to raise the boat in its slip … or once one has passed to advise that everything is fine.” The gated Vista Pointe community was built in 1984 on 70-foot pylons that extend into the bedrock of the lake. Each of the units includes a woodburning fireplace. According to property manager Carol Plaskon, several families own two Vista Pointe units. homeowners can rent to family or friends on a shortterm basis at a discounted rate or at the homeowners’ discretion. The Rudys have a two-bedroom, two-bath unit in 1,007 square feet, though some similar units are smaller at 995 square feet. There are also threebedroom units of 1,359 square feet that include three full baths, with one bedroom and bath in an upstairs loft. After the Rudys had their condo for a few years, they undertook a remodeling project. They changed the decor from a country style to a sleek, black and white color scheme, including painting over grass cloth on the living room walls and remodeling the kitchen. They moved their island bar 2 feet into the living room, bought new appliances, replaced Formica countertops with soapstone and installed new white

cabinets. Byron raised the kitchen ceiling and put in a tile backsplash. Areas that had carpeting were replaced with wood flooring. While their two-bedroom unit does provide a room for guests, the Rudys are among those who rent a second unit to help house larger gatherings. “This allows everyone to get together for meals, but it keeps the all-night TV watchers safely segregated from the rest of the family,” Suzanne said. So whatever happened to the couple’s lot in Mountain View Shores? “We kept it for a number of years thinking we would eventually decide to build on it, but we loved the views, appreciated the limited upkeep and enjoyed many friends at Vista Pointe, so we ended up selling the undeveloped property in 2009,” Suzanne said. “That, too, turned out to be the best decision for our lifestyle and enjoyment.”

enny Simmons is passionate about promoting and growing the arts in Franklin County. “Something I think this county needs is a place for people to go that has everything provided that they can come in and create,” she said. Since she was a child, Simmons has been a doodler. “I’ve always drawn,” she said. “I’ve always been a sketcher.” That love of drawing was nurtured by her parents, Melvin and Judy. “My folks are very artistic people,” Simmons said. “My dad and I would draw cartoons when I was a kid. I just continued that; it was therapy for me.” In the 1980s, Simmons took a watercolor painting class. She liked it, but life got too busy to pursue it further. Fast forward to about seven years ago when Simmons enrolled in a beginners’ oil painting class taught by Ferrum artist Jane Stogner at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center. “I can very much remember her from being in that first class,” Stogner recalled. “She had that ‘aha! moment.’ Her enthusiasm was contagious.” That class was the jumping off point for Simmons. After that, she joined Bald Knob Artists, and has not only pursued her love of painting with oils, but has delved into other media, too. She’s since developed a love for encaustic painting, an ancient technique that involves using hot wax and colored pigments,

and assemblage art, three-dimensional pieces that are created from collectibles, antiques and found objects. “Some tell a story and others have a whimsical feel,” she said of her sculptures. “They have shape and forms that take on a life of their own.” Stogner, who taught art at Ferrum College for more than three decades, said Simmons has an eye for design. “Her sculptural pieces just show genius,” she said. “She is an artist to watch to see where she goes.” Simmons’ studio is just steps away from her home in Hardy. She originally had intended to also use it as a guest house, but “my studio has consumed every inch,” she said. “It’s evolved into my sanctuary. It’s a place I can come hang out.” Upon entering the space, there is a cozy sitting area decorated with framed paintings and builtin bookshelves. On the opposite end of the space, work tables are filled with art in various stages of completion. Another part of the building is where Simmons makes her life-sized sculptures. “My mom has been a major player in this,” Simmons said. “She’s been setting this up and turning it into a functional, working space.”

In addition to her paintings, Simmons has branched out to create assemblage art, threedimensional pieces that are created from collectibles, antiques and found objects. “Some tell a story and others have a whimsical feel,” Simmons said of her sculptures. 58

MAY 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

With a desire to continue her studies, Simmons attends workshops and online classes and regularly collaborates with other well-known area artists, whom she refers to as “the big kids,” including Stogner. “We have become good friends,” Simmons said. “She is my mentor along with several other wonderful artists.” And the learning never stops. “I’m learning about composition, forms, more on color theory, and the value of light and dark,” she said. “It’s endless, and I think it’s a wonderful challenge for your brain.” Her willingness to challenge herself, coupled with her love of the outdoors, has led Simmons to tackle other projects, as well, including fly fishing, which one could argue is its own art form. “Tying flies is an art,” she said. Through her love of the sport, she got involved with Project Healing Waters, a program that helps veterans cope with post-traumatic stress and other injuries. When one of the veterans whom Simmons was working with found out she was an artist, he enlisted her to help him with an art project for a contest. “The art has taken me on a wonderful journey,” Simmons said. She credited not only her mother, but

also her partner Dave Hunt, who, she said, “puts up with me and helps me with all the heavy stuff,” and her co-workers (she is a hairstylist at Eric & Co. Premiere Salon at Westlake Corner). Her artwork also has gotten her noticed — she’s received accolades at regional art shows and competitions and has sold numerous pieces to private collectors. For the past couple of years, Simmons, Stogner and several other artists have hosted the Franklin County Artisan Studio and Harvest Tour, a free, selfguided tour of artists’ studios. Last year’s two-day tour in mid-October featured 19 artists at 10 locations in Callaway, Rocky Mount, Hardy, Glade Hill and Moneta. “When you go out and see other people’s spaces, it fuels you,” Simmons said. That’s exactly what she said she hopes she can instill in others as she plans to start teaching beginning art classes — there’s an artist in everyone. “You don’t have to be able to draw to create art,” Simmons said. “There are so many avenues that are fun and freeing.”

Artwork on display in Penny Simmons’ studio captures the beauty of Franklin County and Smith Mountain Lake.

STOry by Jerry Hale

M

ight this be the year when your dock is due for some upgrades to its appearance and functionality? For most lake residents, docks are much more than the “garage” for their boats, personal watercraft and water toys. Indeed, the lake lifestyle is all about being as close to the water as possible, as much as possible, and the dock serves as the place where family and guests congregate for socializing whenever air and water temperatures are swim-appealing or suitable for over-water outdoor fun. Being situated out in the elements, however, means docks take a beating from the weather and need periodic maintenance and updating. And technology improvements offer nifty opportunities to refit older docks with features that make them more appealing to owners and their guests. Some of the lake’s dock builders recently weighed in on what customers for both new construction and dock renovations are seeking.

New materials

Composite decking just gets more popular, according to Oscar Smith, who has been helping customers of Dillon Docks plan their projects for nearly eight years. “Some, like AZEK, now have a PVC coating that lends a wood-grain look and provides mildew resistance,” Smith said. Erik Plyler of Plyler Homes and Docks agreed. “The PVC-based materials are more expensive than wood, adding $7,000-$12,000 to typical dock jobs,” he said. “But they deliver real value in the longer run by eliminating need for replacement of warped or

mildewed wood, which can average 5 percent of dock value per year. And they lend themselves to hidden fasteners that really improve the job’s appearance.” And composite material is being used for dock ceilings, too. “We’re using more vinyl bead board for ceilings,” Smith said. “It holds its shape and fastens more securely than the old vinyl soffit materials and doesn’t require painting like plywood does.” On the appeal of dock ceilings, Smith said, “A ceiling keeps birds, spiders and other bugs from nesting in the rafters, thus minimizing droppings onto everything below. A white ceiling also brightens the living space below and allows for concealment of lift machinery, wiring and lighting fixtures.” Bill Nissen, who owns Dock Solutions Inc., said he has used Advantage Deck, which is made of high-

density polyethylene with embedded fiberglass strands for strength. “A five-quarter board will span 2 feet without sagging, so it can replace decaying pine decking without adding new stringers,” Nissen said. Advantage Deck also offers 2-inch by 6-inch planks that can directly replace wooden boards without sizing issues. Dock Solutions also recently replaced a 42-slip community dock at Walnut Run with an all-metal structure from Alumadock, Nissen said. “Our docks were over 30 years old and had deteriorated to where the finger piers would wobble and sink under an adult’s weight,” said homeowner Ken Mosig, who served as the community’s marine association president during the project. “The Alumadocks turned out to be the most economical solution, and our residents are delighted with the result.”

Convenience features and lighting

Many dock owners want conveniences similar to those found in their homes, according to Jason Turner of Turner’s Building. “A lot of our jobs have gotten more deviceoriented,” said Turner. That includes shelving specifically for storing smartphones and other electronics as well as outlets that include USB ports. “It’s very customized to the taste of the homeowner.” Remote-controlled devices have grown in popularity, too. “Remotely-controlled lifts are still selling like hot cakes, especially for PWC lifts where they enable getting on and off the machine at dock level even when the water is down,” Nissen said. According to Smith, about half of new dock owners opt for remote-controlled lifts. “It’s an investment that makes the dock much more user friendly.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

63

dock out

Smith also recommends remote-controlled lighting. “A click of the remote will light the dock for an after-dark return ... and avoids having had lefton lights attracting bugs while you were out on the water. Plus, the same system can allow dock lights to be turned on and off from the house,” he said. Another lighting alternative, which can be added anytime by do-it-yourselfers, is plug-in rope lighting, available from home centers and online retailers. Offered in a variety of colors and styles, these lowvoltage LED strings provide a moody glow that does not draw flying insects the way incandescent bulbs can. “It can really dress a dock up,” Turner said. Another simple DIY spruce up is dock carpeting. Installed on floating docks or other sundrenched sections of a dock’s surface, waterproof outdoor carpeting can keep bare feet cool and eliminate potential splinters from weathering wooden boards.

I

f you’ve never heard the expression “taking the waters,” you might think someone’s asking if you want to go for a dip in the lake. But the centuries’ old phrase is often associated with water therapy, relaxation and healing. Take a two-hour drive north to Warm Springs, Virginia, and you’ll find the ideal spot at The Jefferson Pools. The pools are housed within two octagonal, white wooden buildings situated in a serene park-like setting. Built atop warm mineral springs, the men’s bathhouse opened in 1761, and 75 years later, a separate ladies’ bathhouse opened. Owned and operated by The Omni Homestead Resort, which is just a few miles down the highway in nearby Hot Springs, the pools not only have historical significance, but also are said to have healing qualities. “There’s a lot of history that these buildings have seen,” said Lynn Swann, marketing and communications manager for The Omni Homestead Resort. “To know there have been at least seven U.S. presidents that have soaked there … it’s really a remarkable and incredible experience.” When he was 75, Thomas Jefferson was said to have traveled to the pools that are named in his honor in search of relief from his rheumatism, according to a Jefferson Pools brochure. “He stayed for more than three weeks, taking the waters several times each day.”

The pools have been known to relieve maladies such as gout, arthritis, psoriasis, eczema, migraines and sore muscles.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP. The wooden structures are listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Guests pay and register for their soak in an adjacent cottage. In January 2016, a committee formed to conduct a historic structures report to assess and evaluate what steps would be necessary to preserve the pools for future use.

68

The pools have been known to relieve maladies such as gout, arthritis, psoriasis, eczema, migraines and sore muscles, according to Vicki White, who works at both The Jefferson Pools and the spa at The Omni Homestead Resort. Placards on both buildings list the pools’ mineral content as well as their measurements — the men’s pool is 40 feet in diameter, 120 feet in circumference and holds 43,000 gallons of water; the women’s pool measures 50 feet in diameter, 150 feet in circumference and holds 60,000 gallons of water. While the pools have withstood the test of time, the wooden structures, both listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places, have been showing their age for several years. Peeling paint, missing shingles from the rooftops and caution tape covering some of the changing rooms are just a few visible signs that these structures are in need of repair. In January 2016, The Omni Homestead Resort announced that a committee had been formed to conduct a historic structures report on The Jefferson Pools that included an assessment and evaluation of the pools and what steps would be necessary to ensure the structures are preserved for future use. “You can’t just go in and do a quick patch job,” Swann said. “It has to be done the right way.” At a constant 98 degrees, the pools are downright

refreshing, especially in the cooler Warm Springs climate. Sets of steps allow bathers several points of entry into the pools and foam swim noodles are available to use for floating. Because the warm springs are constantly flowing into the pools, the soothing sound of rushing water creates a relaxing atmosphere. The water is crystal clear, too, making it easy to see the colorful, smooth stones that line the bottom. While you soak, be sure to look up — you’ll notice the open-air domed roof that allows bathers to feel like they’re outside. And once you’ve finished soaking, a sign on the gazebo near the bathhouses invites you to take the experience one step further: “The tradition of ‘Taking the Waters’ included bathing in the springs, which effervesce naturally to the surface inside the Ladies or Gentlemen’s Pool Houses, and afterwards drinking from this separate Drinking Pool.” While it’s not widely practiced today, White said the drinking pool is safe to drink from and contains magnesium, which can serve as a natural laxative. The pools currently are open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and offer separate soaking times for both families with children and adults (towels and changing rooms are provided). And the trip will not only be therapeutic, but it also will offer you a glimpse into a bygone era. “They’re not something that changes with technology,” Swann said of The Jefferson Pools. “Go knowing that you are experiencing history. These are the oldest spa structures in the U.S. You couldn’t replicate The Jefferson Pools experience now.”

The Smith Mountain Lake Water Safety Council offers these pointers for safe boating and swimming. cOMpILEd by LAKER MAGAZINE

76

MAY 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

The Smith Mountain Lake Water Safety Council is an advocacy organization whose mission is to improve the safety practices and results on and around the waters of Smith Mountain Lake. The following is a compilation of tips to ensure a summer of safe boating and swimming.

Get educated.

Completing a NASBLAcertified boater education course is now a requirement for personal watercraft and boat operators in Virginia. As of July 1, 2016, the law requires that any person, regardless of age, must comply and statistics show in the six years that the law has been phased in, the accident rate has plummeted. There’s no doubt that educated and aware boaters are safer boaters. Anyone who hasn’t yet attended a Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries boating education safety course should get scheduled. Visit www.dgif. virginia.gov/boating for a list of available classes.

understand and maintain your boat and equipment. Even relatively

new boats can suffer burned out running lights and other deficiencies. Arrange for a vessel safety check of equipment and systems every year; your inspector will also review key safe boating reminders with the skipper and crew. Schedules of organized inspection events can be found at area marinas, or visit cgaux.org to arrange a boat or personal watercraft inspection nearby or at your own dock. It’s free, and it provides great peace of mind.

be alert for floatinG debris.

Boaters who encounter debris that could be a hazard to other boaters, such as a large log or floating dock structure, should carefully tow the debris to undeveloped shoreline, secure it if possible, and report the location to Appalachian Power Company. This act of courtesy may prevent a serious accident. Reporting can be done online at www.smithmtn.com or by contacting Appalachian’s call center at 1-800-9564237. Appalachian’s lake crew routinely removes debris from Smith Mountain and Leesville lakes from April through October, and as needed at other times during the year. Debris in the lake is most likely to occur after heavy rains. Lakefront property owners should be aware that flooding can occur up to the 800-foot contour elevation. If heavy rains are predicted, items that could potentially float away should be moved to higher ground.

top tips

Maintain a proper lookout.

This tip is so important that it’s stated in both the International and Inland Rules of Navigation. Just as in driving, operator distraction is a major contributor to boating incidents. If your boat has an attentive lookout, you have a chance of avoiding a collision with a boat that doesn’t. Every operator is obligated to take action to avoid collision with another boat. Scan the waterway, anticipate potential dangers, clearly indicate your intended course and stay clear of other vessels, obstacles, navigation aids, docks and swimmers. Skippers of bow-riders should make sure passengers riding forward don’t block their view ahead.

know the rules oF the road.

laker media file

Boats being overtaken and boats ahead crossing from the starboard quarter (right front) have the right of way. Reduced visibility calls for reduced speed. Running lights are required during periods of low visibility — darkness, fog or rain. Keep to the right in channels, leave plenty of space when overtaking and don’t fall in line with boats towing skiers or tubers.

Create and Maintain triM.

It is important to distribute weight evenly so small watercraft, such as paddleboards, canoes and kayaks, float level, both fore and aft and port to starboard. This requires placement of everyone and everything aboard for optimum balance. Power boats should also be trimmed, which involves seating passengers evenly side-to-side and more forward than aft, which minimizes loss of visibility as a boat comes on plane. Strategic observer placement and use of motor trim and/or trim tabs also helps keep the bow down when pulling skiers out of the water. Boaters should keep their craft level … and remain level headed, too.

Follow the rules.

Never allow passengers to ride on the gunwales, seat backs or outside of protective railings, including the front of a pontoon boat. A sudden turn, stop or start could cause a fall overboard. After leaving a boat launch or marina, maintain a slow, no-wake speed for a safe and legal distance. Learn and follow the navigation rules.

Make sure children wear personal flotation devices on docks, in boats and around the water. huong fralin

of life jackets based on weight and chest size and sometimes age. Equipment should be sized and worn correctly with all straps connected. Children should have the lower crotch strap between their legs connected on their life jacket. It is important to realize that without this strap children could slide out of their jacket. Falling from a dock or boat significantly increases the pressure and chances of the life jacket separating from a child.

Never swim without a partNer.

Whether from shore, off the dock or off the boat, use the buddy system to ensure someone is paying attention to every swimmer. And designate a responsible adult to watch youth swimmers at all times. Don’t just presume someone will take on that role.

There’s no doubt that educated and aware boaters are safer boaters. Anyone who hasn’t yet attended a Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries boating education safety course should get scheduled. 80

Timing is everything. Making award-winning wine takes time. Roger Furrow, owner of Hickory Hill Vineyards in Moneta, is grateful for the gift of time. Five years ago, Roger went into cardiac arrest after a routine stress test at Centra Medical Group Stroobants Cardiovascular Center in Moneta. Chad Hoyt, MD, and Laura Bollard, RN, sprang into action, performing CPR to save his life. Within minutes, Centra ONE landed and they were flown to Centra Lynchburg General Hospital where cardiologists discovered three blockages and Roger underwent a triple bypass heart surgery. The winemaker treasures every day on the family vineyard. Each grape harvested builds upon a craft requiring patience and time. Roger credits his cardiologist, surgeon and nurses for Roger Furrow Owner, Hickory Hill Vineyards

giving him more of the latter.

here’s no doubt that Bob Bryden’s passion is wine. At 70, Bryden became a certified sommelier after 13 months of rigorous, nearly non-stop studying. Now, he’s sharing that passion with others in a new book, “Practical Tasting: A Step-byStep Wine Tasting Course.” “It’s a simple book for somebody who doesn’t know anything about wine,” Bryden said. “I wrote it from the standpoint that you get together as a group and have some fun with it.” The 216-page book was derived from a lesson plan that Bryden had put together to teach wine classes at a local restaurant. “[T]his course is an expanded version of my tasting course and is aimed at those who want to learn to enjoy wine at a more in-depth level, but are without the ability to get professional guidance,” Bryden explained in the book’s preface. Tasting wine is different from drinking wine and takes practice. The trick is to identify the aromas and tastes from wines without the aid of visual cues. “When we see, touch and smell, our brain can identify it,” Bryden wrote. “You have to learn to reverse that process so that your brain creates an image of what you are smelling, tasting and feeling in your mouth without seeing it.” And spitting out the wine, rather than swallowing it, is a must. “You will quickly get taste fatigue if you swallow every sip of your wine,” Bryden wrote. “Worse, by the third or fourth wine, you might not even care!” Readers can glean information about

varieties of grapes, the places they’re grown and how wine is fermented and aged as well as learn about the world’s top wine-producing countries. Color photographs are included to help illustrate the differences in the wines. Included in the back of the book are eight lesson plans with specific objectives and wines to try. And, while the information may seem overwhelming, Bryden said repetition and practice are important. “Remember this isn’t something that will come easy to everyone,” he wrote. “It’s like training for an athletic event; practice makes perfect.” Since the book’s release last December, Bryden said he’s received positive feedback. “It’s a good feeling to know that people are using it in a practical way,” he said. “You learn to like every wine that’s made the way it’s supposed to be made.” While he doesn’t have any book readings or signings scheduled, Bryden, who goes by the moniker The Lake Sommelier, said he’d be open to speaking at special events or wine dinners. “It’s fun going to groups and talking about wine,” he said. Other books are on the horizon, too, Bryden said, including one that deals with the color of wine, as well as a memoir about his time as an agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. “Practical Tasting: A Step-by-Step Wine Tasting Course” is available in paperback for $34.99 (an e-book version is $14.99) on amazon.com. — Karen Dillon, editor

reader REvIEWS Love May Fail By Matthew Quick The turn of a few pages is all it took for me to fall in love with Matthew Quick’s latest homage to the subtleties of joy, “Love May Fail.” The perceptive writer of “Silver Linings Playbook” has once again illuminated the fact that, though we may not always get what we want, we almost certainly get what we need. Not since “Playbook” have I enjoyed a trip through such a madly quirky, utterly lovely world. Portia Kane opens the novel from within a closet. While drinking Hennessy, Portia catalogs all the reasons, with drunken epithetic lamentations, she has ended up “married to a cartoon.” She has veered far from her dream of becoming a novelist to sit in a closet with a Colt .45 aimed at her pornographer husband as he enjoys his latest young beauty in their bed. She, of course, realizes he isn’t worth prison and, in Quick form, embarks on a journey to anywhere else. Portia’s journey back to herself in hometown Philadelphia leads to encounters with a menagerie of oddballs: the vodka-swilling nun on the airplane who hears Portia’s drunken “confessions;” the hoarding mother who sits amid dusty National

Geographics and hundreds of cans of Diet Coke with lime just in case her daughter decides to drop in for a rare visit; and Nate Vernon, the inspirational senior English teacher who has found himself smack dab in the midst of a “dark night of the soul” with only his dog Albert Camus to guide him. “Love May Fail” aims at the core philosophical angst that comes from a false dualism. Each character seems paralyzed by a choice between hope and despair, between love and isolation, between success and failure, between life and death. Quick even plays with our own fears in the title of the book. I found myself wanting love to succeed as I read, but too afraid to let myself hope, much as the voices in the novel struggled with their own fears. Not only did the book’s title put me on edge, the cover was covered with 13 paper airplanes all pointing straight down. How could I possibly hope for a happy ending? “To be or not to be” seems the question of the human struggle in this false dichotomy. But, ah, how refreshing is Quick, who once again proves the question is “to be happy or not to be,” and the answer is multidimensional, anticlimactic, subtle,

twisted and pure perfection. “Love May Fail” also celebrates the inevitable connectedness of us all. The apparently coincidental meetings of his quirky menagerie are not so coincidental after all. The characters in Quick novels appear more like electrons orbiting a nucleus than random particles flitting about with no purpose. Even the dogs have divine purpose in this one, both Albert Camus, who serves Vernon though his hellish struggles, and Yo-Yo Ma, his companion at his resurrection. And yes, there’s a love story in there. The would-be Romeo, Chuck Bass, serves to keep us grounded and keeps Portia from veering far off her course again. And yes, Quick resolves things a bit too neatly in the denouement. But, after finishing the book, I found myself standing atop the Gainsboro Parking Garage [in Roanoke] watching a piece of paper, folded into the most aerodynamic airplane my poor little brain could configure, glide beautifully downward through the sun-filtered sky to nowhere special. — Deborah Pate, Roanoke

They just know that they are there, and that is essentially their whole purpose: just to be there. It’s as if Gus and Owen had read every other literary novel about a marriage being healed by moving to the country, and just decided to do so, too. This decision, which could have been a trite misstep in other novels, is one that Black uses well to imbue the characters with a certain depth. Just like the moving to the country situation, Black introduces, to the benefit of the novel rather than its detriment, a neighbor named Alison,

a woman who seems to stir feelings in both Gus and Owen, and they, who had moved out to the country to heal their marriage, both begin to feel the tension of temptation. Again, this could be a trite, run-of-the-mill plot, but Black manages to make it work, somehow. “Life Drawing” does have some basic thriller elements — for example, Owen makes a crucial misstep with Alison’s daughter that he will suffer for in the end, but the work is only tangentially a thriller. Instead, the work is an examination of the fragility of human relationships and desires, and one of the more powerfully written books so far this year. — Jason Barr, Harrisonburg

Life drawing By Robin Black Robin Black’s latest, “Life Drawing,” follows the marriage of Augusta (Gus) and Owen. Well, that’s not quite what it could be called — a marriage. It was, once, a union of two people, but Black does an excellent job throughout of depicting two people — though the story is told from Gus’ perspective — who just don’t seem to “fit” in anywhere in their lives. There’s a constant sense of malaise and ennui that hovers over their shoulders, just barely out of sight, just only perceptible during the most trying times. And the trying times are many, as Gus had a short affair, and both she and Owen have moved to the country to … well, again, they don’t seem to know what they’re doing out in the country.

“Survivor,” the granddaddy of all reality TV shows, first aired in May 2000 — 17 years ago! A baby born when the show started is now spitting distance from high school graduation. When “Survivor” began we didn’t need to take our shoes off at the airport, blogging wasn’t a common verb and sexting wasn’t a prevalent pastime. The world has indeed changed in many ways since Jeff Probst first uttered the words “the tribe has spoken.” Have you ever dreamed about being a contestant on “Survivor?” Have you envisioned yourself out-smarting all the other players, to rule the tribal council as the winner of the cool $1 million? Come on, admit it, the “Survivor” daydream is akin to that imaginary Academy Awards acceptance speech we’ve all practiced while preening before the bathroom mirror. In my Oscars dreamscape it’s George Clooney who hands me my gold statue — it’s my fantasy, don’t judge. There’s one key element of “Survivor” participation that will unfortunately prevent me from ever competing on the show. Bugs, not a problem. Heat, rain, sleeping on the ground — good to go. But here’s the thing — having to go 39 days without a pedicure? Kimba is out. I could never survive without a regularly scheduled pedicure. Throughout the years I’ve had reasons to abandon many vices, including caffeine, sugar, alcohol — I even stopped chewing sugar-free gum while avoiding the artificial sweetener Aspartame during pregnancy. However, give up my pedicures? This, my friends, shall never come to pass. In addition to the proper maintenance of my feet and toes, my visits to the nail salon have also provided some thought-provoking insights. A dab of shiny colorful paint makes everything prettier. When you sport size 11 sneakers as I do, you must make every effort to put your best foot forward. My toenails have not been naked since 1976.

MAY 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

STORy by KIMbErlY DAlfErEs

Every once in a while you gotta let your freak flag fly. Piercings or showy tattoos are not my thing. However, your toes provide a discreet space for some self-expression. Coming out of these winter months, who can resist a pretty little flower artfully displayed on your big toe? I’ve seen toenails decorated with skull and crossbones, college logos, flags, flames and stars. It’s always important to tip well. These brave folks are scrubbing your soles, clipping your nails and digging out all the funk, sanding your calluses and kneading your feet into heavenly submission. I can think of no other occasion where a tip is more well-deserved. Well, perhaps the gal who waxes you in all places prone to sprout — OK, she deserves a solid tip as well. Make time for what makes you happy. A good pedicure requires carving a bit of time out of your over-scheduled day, but it’s so worth it. No one ever walks out of a nail salon without a blissful smile. As these summer months approach, make sure your feet are sandalworthy. If you need a recommendation for a good nail salon, let me know and I’ll hook you up. Guys, this includes you too. Gross is gross, no matter the gender. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of “I Was In Love With a Short Man Once” and “Magic Fishing Panties.” Her humor blog, “The MiddleAged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
