H

appy Birthday, America! This is such a fun time to be at Smith Mountain Lake as we celebrate our nation’s indepen-

dence.

There’s a festive feeling in the air — shoppers are scurrying through grocery stores to buy cookout supplies, boats are being gassed up and inflatables inflated for a full day of activities on the water. And it wouldn’t be Independence Day without fireworks! There are a few opportunities for you to see them, so be sure to check our calendar for all the details. The holiday is an ideal time to relax and read the latest in our Jewel of the Blue Ridge series — we take a hike to Peaks of Otter, peek inside a tiny house, visit a dock at The Water’s Edge and chat with a fused glass artist. While you’re at it, journey with us to Lynchburg to explore the home and gardens of Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer, and get a glimpse at one of the homes featured on this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. From all of us at Smith Mountain Laker magazine, we wish you a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday!

ynchburg has its share of historic homes, some open to the public, but by far the most interesting is the Anne Spencer House and Garden Museum. It celebrates Anne Bethel Spencer, a lyric poet who was part of the Harlem Renaissance movement of the 1920s and ‘30s.

Edward and Anne Spencer’s house

Designed and built in 1903 by Edward Spencer for his wife Anne and their children, the modified Queen Anne-style, two-story house was Anne’s home for 72 years. Today the house is furnished and decorated to look as it did when Anne lived there. Even her favorite magazines from the 1920s, toiletries and objects d’art are in place, giving the uncanny impression that Anne has just stepped out of the room and will return momentarily. When poet laureate Maya

Angelou visited the house, she commented, “I feel the spirit of Anne Spencer.” Her spirit certainly does pervade the home with its boldly decorated rooms that are vibrant with rich colors and patterns as well as quirky features, such as the padded red doors Edward salvaged from a local movie theater and hung on the kitchen wall. When lines for a poem entered her mind, Anne wrote them down on whatever was quickly available, including scraps of paper and the walls. Anne was a busy woman, raising her three children, working for 25 years as the librarian at Dunbar High School, creating her garden, working actively for civil rights (she and Edward hosted NAACP meetings in their home) and writing poems. She wrote her first poem when she was 14, but it was a meeting with poet and civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson, who came to the Spencer

home to found the first Virginia chapter of the NAACP, that launched her literary career. According to one story, Johnson, who was impressed with Anne’s poems, sent a few to H.L. Mencken for his comments. Mencken wrote back: “Tell that woman to put beginnings and ends to her poems. I can’t make heads or tails of them, but they’re good.” In her lifetime Anne had more than 30 poems published, and she was the first African-American to be included in “The Norton Anthology of Modern American Poetry,” 1973 edition. Always hospitable, the Spencers hosted many African-American political leaders and artists who traveled between New York, Washington and Atlanta as well as guest lecturers at the Virginia Theological Seminary (now Virginia University of Lynchburg). At the time, there were no public lodgings for African-Americans in segregated Virginia, so the Spencer home became a haven for those passing through. Luminaries, such as Paul Robeson, Thurgood Marshall, Marian Anderson, Zora Neale Hurston, George Washington Carver,

W.E.B. Du Bois and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., enjoyed lively, stimulating conversation in the Spencer home, as well as the pleasures of strolling in the couple’s remarkable garden.

A garden recalled to life

Both Anne and Edward were passionate gardeners. The two of them transformed their deep, narrow suburban lot into an Eden filled with colorful flowers. Edward built a framework of robin’s egg blue pergolas, arbors and trellis walls to divide the space, creating garden rooms that distract from the lot’s difficult, narrow dimensions. In 1924, when she began publishing her poems, he also built Anne a “writing hut,” which they named Edankraal, a portmanteau word combining the first two letters of their names with the Afrikaans word kraal, which means corral or fence-enclosed village. As was Edward’s wont, he built Edankraal with a myriad of found or reclaimed materials. Friends gave him greenstone slabs from the local quarry to make the chimney, floor and terrace. Another friend

provided an old stained glass window, which he used for the front of the building. Old gothic wire arches on the porch sides support two of Anne’s favorite roses, ‘Spanish Beauty’ and ‘Climbing Crimson Glory’. He also salvaged the decorative wrought iron trim from the fence at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (now Randolph College) when they tore it down to replace it with a brick wall. The lacy iron trim adds a decorative flourish to the fence that borders the property line. The beautiful garden, with its lush plantings of old garden roses, bulbs, perennials and shrubs that visitors see today, had fallen into ruin after Anne died in 1975. By the early 1980s, it had become an overgrown tangle, and the blue pergola and other structures were rotting. In 1983, eight years after his mother died, Chauncey Spencer called Mina Walker Wood, a Lynchburg-based landscape designer, and asked her to come see the garden to make recommendations for restoration. Wood let her colleague, Jane Baber White, know about the opportunity, and Jane went to see for herself. White wrote of that spring day, “[T]he garden was speaking to me! It was almost yelling out ‘Please save me! I used to be loved!’ I was completely enthralled.”

Jane Baber White (from left), Shaun Spencer-Hester, Edward and Anne Spencer’s granddaughter, and Susan Wright, a garden club member, have been instrumental in preserving the Spencer home and gardens.

Layers of trellising draw the eye through the garden, masking the fact that it’s a long, narrow space. FAR RIGHT. The sculpted head, affectionately named “Prince Ebo” by the Spencers, was a gift from W.E.B. DuBois.

As a landscape designer, White knew what needed to be done to restore the garden, but she also knew it would require “money, time, money, plants, money, bulldozers, money, volunteers … and personally working in a part of town unlike our own.” With some trepidation, she approached Hillside Garden Club to see if restoring it was a project they’d be willing to take on. This was a radical idea in 1983 because as White wrote in her book “Lessons Learned from a Poet’s Garden,” “Never in the 48-year history of Hillside, nor in the 63-year history of the Garden Club of Virginia of which Hillside is a member club, had a beautification or preservation project extended to the garden of an African-American woman.” As White explained, the club members then were white, affluent and lived in the “old Lynchburg” part of town. Except for one club member, none had heard of this African-American who had lived in

the heart of inner city Lynchburg, and had been an important poet of the Harlem Renaissance, a scholar, a librarian, a political activist and a passionate gardener. Nevertheless, the Hillside Garden Club embraced the project, putting their time, money, influence and talent into restoring this important garden. To recreate the garden, they worked closely with Chauncey Spencer, who provided old photographs and shared his childhood memories. The team chose a photograph taken in 1937 to be their guide. It was an aerial view looking down on the garden from the roof, giving a good overall perspective on the property. The first stage of the restoration work was completed in a year, and in 1984 the Spencer house and garden were featured on the Lynchburg Tour of Homes for Virginia’s Historic Garden Week. It was the first time a home and garden of an AfricanAmerican had ever been opened for Historic Garden Week. In 2014, the garden was featured on the Garden Week guidebook cover. The Garden Club of Virginia awarded the Hillside Garden Club its prestigious Common Wealth Award for the Spencer garden twice, once in 1985 and again in 2009. The award came with a cash prize to use for further restoration work. over the years, the club has raised almost $100,000 to fund the restoration and maintenance work, as well as volunteering untold

hours working in the garden. Today Hillside Garden Club members continue to maintain and improve the garden, working with Shaun Spencer-Hester, Anne’s granddaughter, who now runs the house and garden museum. Anne Spencer died at age 93 on July 27, 1975 and is buried alongside her husband Edward, who died in 1964, in the family plot at Forest Hills Cemetery in Lynchburg. The house and garden were designated a Virginia Historic Landmark in 1976. Both Friends of the Library USA and the Association for the Study for Afro-American Life and History also made it a Historic Landmark, and it is included on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dennis and Gayle’s expansive windows look out toward the beach at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park, the wooded shorelines of Smith Mountain Lake State Park and Smith Mountain. “And that view will never change unless the county or state decides to sell off its property, which I doubt,” Dennis said. kitchen and living room, as well as from the adjacent keeping room. The living room is accented by a stacked stone fireplace with floor-to-ceiling built-ins on each side. A large covered deck with glass railings beckons you to come outside and enjoy the view with a cup of coffee. The keeping room has a TV, a gas fireplace, a wine bar, a second seating area and an interesting stained glass window, custom-made from one of Gayle’s photos showing the mountain, the lake and sailboats. Separating these two seating areas, but flowing

seamlessly into them, are the kitchen and the dining area. Custom, dark stained cabinets in the kitchen emphasize the sleek, clean look in this home. There’s a unique backsplash in the kitchen, which reappears in the lower level kitchen, that’s made of tiny stacked stone. When you stand at the kitchen sink, located within a massive 15-foot-long island, you can look out and take in the entire view, the best one in the house. That view can be admired later this year, as the Mischel home is one of eight featured on the 2017 SML Charity Home Tour, which will be Oct. 6-8.

At one end of the main floor is a guest suite and at the other is the master suite, with a lovely lakeview sitting area, big hunky beams overhead and a bathroom to die for. Beautiful 8-inch-wide plank hardwood flooring is underfoot throughout the main level. “Downstairs is where everyone hangs out when the children and grandchildren come to visit,” Gayle said. They gather around the big TV on round sofas, or play pool or games in the open adjacent area. There’s a small kitchen here with a beverage refrigerator, SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

cars and engines, and is currently working on two Ford Mustangs — a 1969 and a ’73 — in the “old car” garage. Gayle has her own office as well, situated in a nook near the kitchen, just off the upstairs hallway to the other garage. She retired from having her own marketing consulting business. Since she retired before Dennis, she was in charge of the homebuilding project, which took 22 months. During construction, the Mischels rented a condo at the lake so Gayle could be available in case any questions arose. The couple originally considered retiring in California. On second thought, though, Dennis said he didn’t feel ocean boating would be as appealing, so they searched for lake property instead. They rented off and on at Halesford Harbour for a year as they looked for a house to buy. After exploring many areas of the lake, they eventually decided to buy a lot in Park Place and build. And while it isn’t on the California coast, they describe their home as having California coastal style. With beautiful views, the home is sleek with clean lines and contemporary furnishings and is open with a complete lack of clutter or busyness. The 27th annual Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour will be Oct. 6-8. Tickets and information are available at smlcharityhometour.com.

The Junior Appalachian Musicians program seeks to keep Appalachian music and culture alive

O

n a weekday afternoon, about a month before Franklin County Public Schools dismissed for summer recess, two girls with guitars sat beside each other in a room at the Essig Center in Rocky Mount. As they strummed their instruments, they softly sang the gospel hymn “I’ll Fly Away.” “I’ll fly away, oh glory / I’ll fly away in the morning / When I die, Hallelujah by and by / I’ll fly away…” The girls were getting in extra practice before their 90-minute weekly lesson with the Franklin County Junior Appalachian Musicians program that teaches Appalachian culture and tradition through music, song and dance. The program is an affiliate of the larger nonprofit JAM organization, which was founded in 2008. Today, there are more than 30 affiliates in Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina, according to the JAM website. One of 10 in Virginia, the Franklin County program operates under the umbrella of the Smith Mountain Arts Council. Retired school administrator and lake resident Jim Mullens started Franklin County JAM in 2014. “When I retired, I still wanted to do something musical with the students,” he said. JAM, he said, is a way to keep the tradition of Appalachian music and culture alive. “I think the kids need to be exposed to it.”

Students meet weekly at the Essig Center to learn to play fiddle, banjo or guitar from four paid instructors: Andy Buckman (banjo), Robin Lavinder (guitar), Guy Ferguson (advanced guitar) and Emily Blankenship-Tucker (fiddle). On this particular weekday afternoon, Buckman enticed the students to play the old-time song “Shortnin’ Bread” by passing around a tray of shortbread for them to try. “I’ve been playing this music since I was a kid,” Buckman said. A political science teacher at Franklin County High School, Buckman is in his first year as a Franklin County JAM instructor and is paying it forward from when he was a kid being taught to play by older musicians. “Many of them took me under their wing and taught me their music,” he said.

The students don’t read music, either. Many of them learn to play by ear, Mullens said. “It’s not easy to learn, but it’s fun,” Buckman said. “It requires mastery of fine motor skills.” One of the challenges of the program is getting the students to practice regularly, said Ferguson, a bluegrass and old-time musician who has been with the program for three years and also gives private lessons. “The thing is you have to get the kids to buy into it,” he said. Alex, a rising fifth grader, is in his first year of Franklin County JAM and is learning to play banjo. “I love bluegrass,” he said. Christopher, a rising seventh grader is in his second year of Franklin County JAM and also plays banjo. “I just think it’s cool,” he said of the program.

SHORElINES Profile The program not only teaches students how to play the songs, but also gives them an outlet to perform them in front of a crowd. Earlier this year, the students went to Heartwood in Abingdon to participate in the Crooked Road Youth Music Festival with other JAM affiliates. “We have kids there from North Carolina and all over Virginia,” Buckman said. “Each unit gets their own time onstage.” Now in its sixth year, the festival is organized by The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail and features 15 bands and more than 200 musicians. Heartwood is one of nine major venues along the 300-plus mile driving trail, which winds through the mountains of Southwest Virginia and highlights the heritage of the region’s traditional music. “I’ve seen some good musicians come out of it,” Buckman said of the festival. Over the summer, the kids also were invited to participate in a three-day summer camp that karen dillon

included learning to play dulcimers, writing a ballad, building an instrument and attending an old-time music concert. “We want to give them the Appalachian culture that comes with the music,” Mullens said. That’s something that Lavinder, a JAM instructor for the past three years and a public school music teacher, wholeheartedly agrees with. “I like that we’re passing on something that’s going to be a lost thing if we don’t,” she said. “I think it creates a sense of community.” And it’s the community that supports the program, too. Although the students pay a weekly fee of $10 ($5 for students on free and reduced lunch), the program relies on funding from community grants, private donations, fundraisers and SMAC to help pay for instruction, camps and workshops. elping others is what Rick and Nancy Ellett like to do. They collect toys for the annual Lake Christian Ministries’ “A Child’s Christmas” program, stock and maintain loaner life jacket stands at the lake’s public access boating facilities and hand out free hot dogs at vessel safety checks and marina events. “We like helping people, and we get extra chances to treat and get to know our members,” Nancy said. It’s that spirit of helping that led the couple to start the lake’s Sea Tow franchise in 2009. The membership-based business provides assistance to boaters should they run out of gas, need a jumpstart, need to be towed or have a similar emergency. “Our mission is to help boaters have a great boating experience,” Nancy said. “We are here for boaters 24/7/365 even if it’s just to give advice or local knowledge over the phone.” When Rick, a lifelong area resident, was looking to start a second-career business, he knew he wanted to combine his love of the lake and boating. After doing some research, he discovered Sea Tow, a New York

company founded by Joe and Georgia Frohnhoefer in 1983. With franchises already serving the coastal areas, Sea Tow was looking to expand its services to larger inland lakes, Nancy said. “All of the franchises are family-owned and operated,” she added. “Every franchise owner knows the others by first name and helps one another out.” Today, Sea Tow Smith Mountain Lake has nearly 1,100 members and employs 15 captains. All of the captains are CPR- and first-aid certified and licensed, with a towing endorsement, through the U.S. Coast Guard, Nancy said. “Our captains are not just licensed boat captains,” she added. “They are a part of our team and share our commitment to helping boaters get the most from their time on the water.” Sea Tow SML operates two specially-outfitted, 21foot Triumph center console towboats, one out of the Gills Creek area and another one at Indian Point near channel marker R37. On weekends and holidays, though, the boats are often kept at the homes of the captains on call so they are readily accessible. Outfitted with strobe lights to enhance visibility on the water, the bright yellow boats with black graphics are equipped with fore and aft tow posts, 300 feet of heavy-duty tow line, jump-starting gear, first-aid kits, tools and extra fuel.

SHORElINES Profile

Over the years, the Elletts and their captains have helped hundreds of stranded boaters, both members and non-members alike.

“We carry two 5-gallon fuel containers on board, and as we deliver gas to somebody, we’ll refill them so we’re ready for the next one,” Nancy said. While Sea Tow operates year-round, the warmer summer months are when it’s busiest — captains take turns patrolling the lake regularly on weekends and help with crowd control during special events, such as the Fourth of July fireworks at Parkway Marina.

TOP. Nancy Ellett prepares a tow line for a stranded boater. “Our mission is to help boaters have a great boating experience,” she said. RIGHT. Whether they’re patrolling the lake, handing out hot dogs at vessel safety checks or collecting toys for kids served by Lake Christian Ministries, Rick and Nancy Ellett say they enjoy helping people in the community.

48

july 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

“The weekends … that’s the most important time,” Rick said. “We’ve got to be ready to respond. It’s not uncommon to have an assist underway when another call comes in. Having two boats and captains on call means we can go where we’re needed, when we’re needed. We’re shopping for a third boat to enhance our response.” Because staying safe on the water is so critical, the Frohnhoefers formed the nonprofit Sea Tow Foundation in 2007 to promote boating safety and education. Locally, Sea Tow SML teaches kids about boating safety through games, provides loaner life jackets at public boat ramps and during special events and helps raise awareness about not boating under the influence through its Designated Skipper Program. “This foundation helps us implement many of the safety programs we sponsor around the lake,” Nancy said. Over the years, the Elletts and their captains have helped hundreds of stranded boaters, both members and non-members alike.

SHORElINES Profile Members, who become stranded, can call for help to get going again or get towed back to their home dock. “We do that as part of their membership, and it’s free, as often as they need us,” Nancy said.

Nancy Ellett of Sea Tow Smith Mountain Lake uses a tablet to record the service that was provided to a boater.

Memberships also extend to family members or guests who use a member’s boat, and apply to any boat a member may borrow or rent. Sea Tow can help non-members, too. When boaters call for help, they are provided with an estimate for the service that will be needed, which varies by where the breakdown occurred and towing distance involved. Other services Sea Tow provides include help with un-groundings, salvages and pumping out partially submerged boats and personal watercraft. Depending on the situation, a Sea Tow captain may not even need to physically respond to a call. “A lot of times we can help people over the phone,” Rick said. For Smith Mountain Lake boaters, the Sea Tow Lake Card membership, which starts at $119 a year, provides coverage for any recreational boat on inland freshwater/inland waters (except in Florida), regardless of the operator. “Even if they never have to call us for help, many of our members view their annual membership as peaceof-mind,” Nancy said. “If you’re never towed, think of your membership dollars as going toward the money we spend supporting community events.”

Union Hall artist Nancy Erikson is fusing decorative glass into art

verywhere you look in Nancy Erikson’s art studio, there’s a kaleidoscope of colors — deep blues, robust reds, majestic greens and vibrant oranges. Displayed on shelves and in windows are fused glass vases, coral bowls, dichroic jewelry and cheerful suncatchers, such as owls, birds and flowers. Erikson, who once earned a living as a project manager for Bank of America, has turned what started as a hobby into a full-time passion. “In September of 2009, a dear friend of mine and I took an introductory to fused glass class at our local community college,” Erikson wrote on her Facebook page. “We had no idea what we were doing and had no expectations for the class. We thought it looked like fun. A little over eight years later, I am still hooked.” In her studio, which is on the lower level of the Union Hall home she shares with her husband, Matt, and teenage son, Luke, Erikson creates one-of-a-kind pieces, forming sheets of glass into delicate works of decorative and functional art. “I am drawn to the vibrant, bold colors and the way the light comes through the glass,” she said. “By using different types of glass and layering translucent glass over opaque glass, you can achieve

some beautiful combinations.” In its simplest form, fused glass is the art of taking two or more pieces of glass and heating them in a kiln until they are fused together. The first firing fuses the pieces together into a flat piece, which then can be fired over a mold to create shapes, such as a bowl or vase. Pieces can be fired multiple times, too. “Fusing glass is an interesting balance between art and science. Most of us can easily relate to the artistic aspect ... choosing colors, designing a pattern and adding fine details,” Erikson said. “The scientific aspect can make or literally break your piece. For example, you can only fuse glass that expands and contracts at the same rate or it will eventually break.” Because the glass creations take time to fire and need just as much time to cool, it can take up to 18 hours to fire a piece of artwork. “Once you have your flat piece, you might be done or you may choose to add additional layers of glass or slump it into a bowl or vase,” Erikson said. “So to get to your final piece could be several days.” Since that first series of classes, Erikson has continued her training with regionally- and nationally-known artists and has participated in classes offered online. “I feel like I have just touched

the tip of the iceberg,” she said. “There are so many techniques to learn and everyday they are coming out with innovative products that allow you to explore and challenge your creativity.” As a member of Bald Knob Artists, Erikson enjoys collaborating and learning from fellow artists of other media as well. “I have learned so much from their painting techniques, color theory, how they create depth and how they get inspired,” she said of the group. “I’ve always been interested in all kinds of art forms, and the Bald Knob group includes all types of artists.” While there are some pieces that Erikson makes regularly, she also enjoys experimenting with different techniques and new products. For that,

having a home studio comes in handy. “I usually feel most creative late at night so whenever an idea strikes, I can go down to my studio and work without disturbing anyone,” she said. “Having such a convenient studio has been a game changer for me.” One of her latest projects — something she’s not attempted previously — is to transform an old sixpaned window into a scene filled with fused glass. “We have been fortunate to travel extensively, which allows me to get inspired by other cultures and landscapes, and I always try to find local glass artists and galleries,” she said. “It’s amazing how a simple conversation on technique can change how you approach a project, and suddenly I am off in a new direction. I tend to work more to what strikes my fancy.” On a shelf next to her kiln, Erikson keeps a log of the pieces she makes and the firing schedule for each, which can allow her to make adjustments to future firing schedules. “Every time I open the kiln, it’s like Christmas,” she said. “I have an idea of what something will look like, but you never know what you’re going to get until you open it.” Once a piece of artwork is taken from the kiln, Erikson carefully sands it to ensure there are no sharp edges. “When we sand, we sand underwater lifelong resident the beautiful to keep the glass dust out of A the air,” she said. “Iofhave to be careful not to breathe it in.” Working with glass can not only be messy, but it also can be dangerous, which is why Erikson takes every precaution when sanding her pieces, wearing eye protection, a respirator and a gown. “People are kind of freaked out about working with glass, and I admit I was, too, at first, but with time, you become more comfortable,” Erikson said. And yes, she does manage to accidentally cut herself from time-to-time. “Band-Aids are my friend,” she added with a laugh. So what if Erikson creates a piece of glass art that doesn’t quite go according to what she had envisioned? She keeps a plastic bin under the sink in her studio to store those pieces, so eventually they can be transformed into something else. When Erikson is not in MLS#806715, her studio,$400,000, she canOver be7 Private Ac found selling her pieces at various shows and craft fairs. She’s working on her inventory for two larger shows coming later this year, Olde Salem Days in September and The Stocked Market in November. She also will participate in the Artisan Saturdays series at Explore Park. Erikson’s fused glass artwork can be found at Southern Roots near Westlake Corner and the Artisan MLS#807719, $595,000, Dream Home Lo Center in Rocky Mount. She also has items for sale at Second Helpings Gallery in Roanoke, River District Artisans in Danville and Heartwood in Abingdon. Erikson said that she also hopes to develop a website and online store in the future.

he home itself is extremely appealing: a stately stone two-story in The Water’s Edge, framed by lush, artfully maintained landscaping and situated in a quiet cove with a view that stretches out to the Blue Ridge. It’s an idyllic place to call home and it’s likely that most anyone would love spending time lounging in its inviting great room or prepping meals in the spacious, modern kitchen. But to Bill and Barbara Beck, who built the home a dozen years ago, it is also “that place where we are when we’re not outside,” Barbara said. “We’re fresh air people, so we’re outdoors as much as possible.” The home’s large expanse of lake-facing deck is one outdoor-life enabler. The one place they really love is the more than 1,900-square-foot dock, with most of that under a roof, providing shelter from even mid-summer’s brutal rays. Bill eagerly tells of the dock’s near-miss history. “We sketched the layout we wanted and asked Mike Turner (of Turner’s Building) to draw it in detail and provide an estimate. In one of our conversations, Mike said, ‘If you wait one more day to pull the trigger, [Appalachian Power’s] new shoreline management plan will be in effect, and I

can no longer build you the large dock you want,’” Bill recalled. “We told Mike to submit the application then and there. And every day we’re on the dock, we’re oh-so-thankful for that decision.” As it turns out, that’s a lot of dock days. “From late spring to early fall, we’re pretty much everyday dock users,” Barbara said. “There’s something about lounging above, on and in the water that simply captivates us. It is incredibly relaxing.” Bill added, “As time has passed, we’re using the boats less. We’re quite content being on the dock where there’s a TV for watching sports, plenty of room for lounging under cover ... and all the water toys are handy.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Whenever we’re down here, guests are welcome.” With a dock house nearly twice the size of the 72 square feet that is now allowed by Appalachian’s shoreline management plan, there’s room for a bar pass-through opening, a 10-foot countertop with built-in cabinets beneath for glassware, snacks and serving items, plus a separate storage closet for skis, fishing rods and other dock stuff. “We probably average two nights a week when invited guests are with us,” Barbara said. “And when

Like the Becks, many lakers use their docks as an extension of their home. in packaging. Along the way they built a home in Mountain View Shores, which served as their weekend retreat for 20 years. “I traveled a lot, and would fly back to Raleigh or Greensboro on Friday, dash home and then we’d rush off to be at the lake,” Bill recalled. “Then I said, ‘This is silly. We should just get a place I can come straight home to.’ We were attracted to The Water’s Edge for its ambiance, amenities and social opportunities. It’s been a great place to live.” Barbara, who took up golf around the time Bill’s interest in the game was waning, also enjoys being on The Water’s Edge links a couple times a week. Bill offered lakers this dock maintenance tip: “For a while I would power-wash the Trex decking every year or two. But I’ve found that spraying with a 5050 mix of bleach and water, then hosing it off after 10 minutes or so, is much faster and works just as well. Yeah, it has lightened the color some, but that just brightens everything up.”

ou may have heard of the tiny house phenomenon on television channels, such as HGTV. Now Smith Mountain Lake is home to a wee house on Oakshire Lane on the Blackwater River arm of the lake. The outside measures 20-feet by 20-feet, and its two floors encompass a total of just 800 square feet of indoor living space, qualifying it as tiny, according to Wikipedia, although there is no building industry standard for tiny. At this house, there also are two outside entertaining areas — a patio off the first floor and a tiled deck with a sitting area upstairs off the main bedroom with views of the cove from both areas, which are quite lovely. The compact structure, built on a foundation and a crawl space, was designed as a guesthouse for a larger home to be built later on the same 2-acre lot. “It can be sited over there,” said builder Trey Park as he motioned toward the waterfront. “It’s just that I built the guesthouse first.” The entrance faces the parking area and is made inviting by shutters and a unique pergola crafted of reclaimed wormy chestnut from an old barn. “The tiny idea is all about getting outside and making that outdoor space useable,” Park added. “I designed the house, lining it out with tape on the floor of my living room in Roanoke. It was not my intention to build furniture for it, but I discovered that what was available just didn’t fit or function suitably. So I came up with custom designs that make the most of the limited floor space.”

He added, “Everything is multifunctional,” as he demonstrated how the cabinets under the living room TV cleverly open and extend to become a dining table for six. The coffee table converts to a bench for the dining table — it gets repositioned easily because there’s felt on the bottom of the legs to avoid scratching the reclaimed walnut wood flooring. The living room sofa, with storage underneath for bed linens, transforms into a double bed once the dining table slides back into the wall. “This makes a nice extra bedroom,” said Park, who supplemented the powder room on the first floor with an outdoor shower. “Perfect for kid-use during the lake season.” The kitchen sports sleek quartz countertops, a full size side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, a full size dishwasher, a stove, an oven, a microwave and a sink that paritally converts to a cutting board. A modern-looking, wall-mounted spice rack and a magnetic knife holder help reduce countertop clutter, and a hanging stainless steel potholder lends a gourmet feel to the kitchen. Wine is stored above a large window that floods the work area with natural light.

This tiny home was built recently on a 2-acre lot on Oakshire Lane on the Blackwater River arm of the lake as a guest house. Its features include decorative shutters, a weathered-shake exterior and sweeping views of the lake from a patio and a deck. With 120 feet of shoreline, there’s also a 1,500-square-foot dock.

“I had to be very precise with spaces,” Park said. “The oven door only clears the window molding by a quarter inch. Even though it‘s all tiny, everything is built to code.” The stairway, for example, is not a ladder to a loft or a metal spiral. Instead, it’s full size with wrought iron banisters, reclaimed wood treads and railings

A cozy, windowed office space above the stairway, with a built-in computer desk, is accessible by steps that double as a nightstand. The interior features natural light and brightness with lots of windows, an important factor for such a small house. It makes you want to look outside and be outdoors. sleek look with pops of color via master bedroom throw pillows, which can be stowed inside the headboard compartment when the bed is in use. The porch swing is accented by colorful pillows as well. Park credited Jessica Byrd of By Design Interiors for helping with the decorating. Dark, reclaimed walnut flooring throughout gives a feeling of richness and contrasts well with white walls and moldings. The lot has 120 feet of shoreline on which Park built a 1,500-square-foot dock — “actually three times the space inside the house,” he said with a grin. “I wanted to create this cottage-effect on the house, so I used the look of weathered shakes; I put on a slate roof, and I have round gutters and downspouts that give the appearance of aged copper,” he added. Park’s tiny house on the lake proves that, indeed, one can be “living the dream” in a charming tiny cottage.

Andrew Mather, general manager of Peaks of Otter Lodge, which employs 70 seasonal employees, said October is the busiest month as visitors come to admire the fall foliage. Sharp Top is the tallest of the three peaks with an altitude of 3,875 feet.

O

n a bright and sunny July summer day, as one lounges on a dock next to the cool waters of Smith Mountain Lake, what could possibly entice someone to leave this mountain oasis to travel elsewhere?

Gold perhaps?

An hour’s drive north as the crow flies, Peaks of Otter rises skyward as part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Steeped in rustic history and rural legend, the area is thought to have been used by Native Americans as a favorite mountain pass-

through, and it’s been hypothesized that the origin of the Peaks of Otter name may have come from the Cherokee term “Ottari,” which translates to “high mountain.” European settlers began to converge in the area in the mid-1700s. Two of the earliest known settlers were Charles and Robert Ewing, who had emigrated from Scotland. Another popular theory is that the mountainous area was named for a namesake back in Scotland, the twin peaks of Otterburn. There’s also lore that prescribes that Charles and Robert named the area after the Ewing surname, which has been noted by some historians as “Clan of the Ewing Otter.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

day trips The Peaks of Otter area soon became a bustling community, especially after a turnpike was constructed that connected the area to what is now Bedford. The base of the mountain area became dotted with the homes of more than 20 families, a church and a school. Also as a fixture within this enclave, in part in response to the frequency of travelers through the area, was a hotel. The welcoming of the weary traveler became part of the historical imprint of this community. Though the original hotel met its demise by an unfortunate fire, another hotel thrived in the area as did a small establishment known as Polly Wood’s Ordinary B&B. This diminutive log cabin offered shelter and home-cooked meals to passers-through from the 1820s into the 1850s. The structure still stands on the grounds of what is now Peaks of Otter Lodge. Given the historical backdrop of this area, it’s little wonder that the location appealed to the National Park Service as a potential area to be developed for tourists. When construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began

in 1935 as a means to connect Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, plans included the development of the Peaks of Otter region as a recreational and service area adjacent to the parkway. By 1964 the park service had created Abbott Lake that sits at the base of the peaks and had built Peaks of Otter Lodge on its shores. Today, Peaks of Otter Lodge remains operational and serves as testament to the care and effort that was put into its construction. Though the National Park Service retains ownership of the lodge, the management of the property is now spearheaded by Delaware North, ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the largest privately held hospitality companies in the world. Delaware North manages national venues, including Grand Canyon National Park and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The beauty of Peaks of Otter Lodge shines through in its simplicity. Walking through its front doors, guests are greeted by a large check-in and information area constructed of weathered wood and copper. One of the many surprises is the discovery that this front desk was constructed by the current lodge general manager, and sometime furniture maker, Andrew Mather. Though genuinely humble, Mather beamed with pride when he shared that construction of this impressive front desk was completed in “about a day.” Serving as general manager since 2013, it’s apparent that Mather possesses a personal passion for this historic landmark. During a recent tour, as Mather reviewed some of the amenities — a large wood and copper fireplace that is original to the lodge, a lake brimming with fish ready for catch and release as well as three otters and 63 guest rooms that recently received a $750,000 spruce-up — his demeanor became that of a proud parent describing his child’s achievements. His excitement was palpable when he described future improvement plans that include the addition of a new snack bar at the base of Sharp Top trail, enhanced capacity for weddings and small conferences and canoes and fire pits to be placed lakeside for guests and visitors alike. “You don’t have to stay at the lodge in order to

utilize all the area offers,” Mather noted. “Many visitors come to enjoy the lake and hiking trails and don’t necessarily stay overnight at the lodge. We are, after all, a national park.” The lodge employs 70 seasonal employees and its peak months of operation are April through November. October is a particularly popular month, and the lodge often sells out as tourists flock to watch Mother Nature’s annual fall colors spectacle. Especially during these busy periods, the lunch buffet offered in the lodge’s expansive dining room helps to accommodate individual travelers alongside busloads of nature lovers. For those who choose to stay overnight, all of the lodge’s guest rooms were constructed so that each has a view of Abbott Lake. The rooms are simple, in an old-fashioned kind of way. Finishings are basic and clean, if a bit sparse. However, it is of course the spectacular outdoor surroundings that bring most to the area. One small quirk of the guest rooms, which shouldn’t be missed, is that in each bathroom, carved into the original blue tiles, you will find a small slit above which reads “RAZOR BLADES” in raised letters above the opening in the tile. If you are not so inclined to hike from bottom to top, there is a shuttle available to squire you up a windy path that will get you almost to the top of the peak — the last 1,500 feet are only accessible by foot. It’s worth the extra effort to see one of the most splendid views in Virginia. On a clear day you can look down and see the true picturesque beauty of the lodge nestled next to the reflective lake at the base of the mountains.

Now, about that gold.

The lore of the Peaks of Otter also includes the legend of the Beale treasure. Sometime in the early 1800s (the exact date is a bit blurry) legend has it that for reasons that remain mostly unclear, Thomas Jefferson Beale

july 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

buried a treasure that included gold, silver and jewels somewhere near the present day town of Montvale, near Bedford. The treasure is estimated to be worth a modern-day value of more than $20 million. Beale left behind three coded messages that supposedly reveal the exact location of the treasure. To date, no one has cracked the code and found the fortune, though many have tried. Even the famed treasure hunter Mel Fisher set out with a crew to follow the clues, but he too turned up empty-handed. Some believe the treasure has already been found, while others continue to study the clues and believe finding the Beale treasure remains a true possibility. In a place like the Peaks of Otter, where legends abound, a hidden treasure chest is not outside the realm of possibilities.

NOw r ea d THIS

One glance at the cover of his new book, “Shorts in a Bunch,” and you can probably guess that Jim Morrison has a sense of humor. It’s a drawing of three pairs of boxer shorts strung along a clothesline. “The shorts with the hearts are love stories; the camo shorts represent the military stories and the polka dots are everything else,” Morrison said. The stories — 62 in all — are each placed in alliteratively-titled chapters, including “Amusing Anecdotes,” “Tall Tales,” “Eclectic Essays,” “Heroic Histories,” “Poems” and “Playful Plays.” “It’s all the things I’ve written over the past 25 years,” said Morrison, who is an active member of the Virginia Writers Club, Roanoke Valley Writers chapter and Lake Writers. “Most of them are humorous.” In the “Amusing Anecdotes” chapter, readers go on everyday adventures with Morrison. “These are funny things that have happened to Edie and me,” Morrison said of him and his wife. Take, for example, the time Morrison found a neighbor in the street sitting under a water sprinkler. “As I got closer, I could see a person sitting on the asphalt in the middle of the street,” he wrote. “Closer yet, I could see that it was a woman sitting in the street. The entire portion of the street where she was sitting was wet. On her head was a plastic shower cap.” The “Tall Tales” chapter features fictional pieces, such as the rejection letter that Harper Lee receives from Acme Literary Agency for “To Kill a Mockingbird.” “Similar to my advice to other firsttime novelists, I suggest you put ‘To Kill

a Mockingbird’ under your bed and start anew,” wrote Myron “My” Opia to Lee in the fictitious letter. “You’ll need to hone your writer’s skills if you want ever to be more than just a ‘one-book’ author.” Morrison said he inherited his sense of humor from his lawyer father who loved telling jokes. “He laughed so hard he couldn’t get to the punchline,” Morrison recalled. “I’ve always loved to laugh. I think I probably inherited that from him.” But Morrison’s writings haven’t always been humorous. “A lot of my writing has been pretty serious,” said Morrison of his career as a civilian executive in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. After he retired, Morrison wrote “Bedford Goes to War,” a drama about Bedford County’s experience in World War II. That eventually turned into a historical book titled, “Bedford Goes to War: The Heroic Story of a Small Virginia Community in World War II.” With the research he had collected for “Bedford Goes to War,” Morrison also wrote “Class of 1940: Coming of Age in World War II,” another historical novel that illustrated what life was like leading up to the war. In the “Heroic Histories” chapter of his book, Morrison pays homage to veterans with his essays about D-Day, Veterans Day, World War II and the military service of U.S. presidents. Also threaded throughout “Shorts in a Bunch” are snippets about life at Smith Mountain Lake. In one account, Morrison writes about watching a herd of deer swim across Betty’s Creek one January afternoon. “We think all eight were females. We nicknamed them the ‘She-Does,’ a takeoff on the ‘She-Doos,’” Morrison wrote.

Louisa Meets Bear

The Jesus Cow

By Lisa Gornick

By Michael Perry

In Lisa Gornick’s third novel, “Louisa Meets Bear,” she takes a poignant trip through the psyche of numerous characters whose lives interconnect in some way, shape or form. The title of the book is a bit misleading as you only see Louisa and Bear interact in three chapters, but people they love or know become entangled, capturing the essence of just how small a world it really is. Louisa and Bear, whose real name is William Callahan, meet while at Princeton together. They instantly fall in love, but it’s not meant to be. Gornick takes this opportunity to explore human relationships and their complexities, which then stem out into more intricate connections between characters. Though you don’t stay with the characters for very long and you never see their stories resolved, the messy, disorganized endings leave you with a sense of perfect incompletion. Gornick definitely knows that the meat of a story lies not in the destination but in the journey. The numerous relationships aren’t just romantic, either. We are given a mixture of associations, including a young woman who gives her baby up for adoption after finally understanding why her own mother left and a mother meeting her son’s middleaged, blind piano student. Gornick shows readers that it’s not just the people in your life whose relationships and opinions matter to you, but also those who come into your life because of those people. Readers will become hyper aware of the people they come in brief contact with. What is great about this novel is that each chapter can be read as an individual story, but because of the entwining narratives, it comes together to create one cohesive piece. For me, I had to keep a character map in order to understand and recognize where the stories overlapped. Some connections were obvious; others were buried deep within the words. And though the reader spends only a short time with each character, Gornick is able to keep the readers’ empathy and interest by making the characters dynamic and round. For some readers, the lack of resolution might disappoint, but because of the depth of character and characterization, it’s easy to forgive. Gornick has written a very easy read, but one worth reading over again to find what’s missed. With her style of creating poignant relationships and journeys, and her effortless characterization, “Louisa Meets Bear” is a novel in which it’s all about the path that takes you to the end, not the end itself. — Alexis Helms

Humorist Michael Perry’s new novel, “The Jesus Cow,” despite a few missteps, is an interesting and humorous work set in the small Wisconsin town of Swivel. At times, it feels like an updated version of Sinclair Lewis’ “Main Street”: a portrait of a small town attempting to keep itself together against outside forces. The main crux of the story — and the genesis for the title — is when a small calf is born on farmer Harley Jackson’s farm. The calf has an unmistakeable likeness of Jesus Christ on its side, and at first, Harley is reluctant to let anyone else see the cow. Soon, however, Harley is swayed by a friend (and by a divine accident) to use the Jesus Cow as a sideshow attraction that becomes so successful that Lloyd’s of London is willing to indemnify the cow. Of course, the exhibit brings a lot of money to Harley and a lot of unwanted notoriety to the town. The resulting conflict leads to a conflagration that engulfs the town and deeply affects all of the characters, changing their lives. There are places where Perry stumbles, however. One of the main characters has a really big secret, and the fact is stated twice within the first two chapters; the secret is then revealed around chapter seven, and once that happens, the ending of the novel is predictable for any astute readers. The finale, then, is robbed of some of its momentum. Also, Perry tends to oversatirize his characters. Klute Sorenson is the town’s partially successful businessman who drives a Hummer and listens to financial and management audiobooks at full volume. And he lulls himself to sleep by listening to stock reports. And he hands out copies of “Atlas Shrugged” at meetings. And he speaks in catchphrases. Most of the characters suffer through this process, where a point is introduced and then belaboured, the humor wears thin. Perry’s characters do progress and change throughout the book, some for better, others for worse, but the initial introduction of each of them feels hamfisted at times. Even so, Perry’s writing is crisp and infectious and it is entirely possible to read “The Jesus Cow” in one sitting. The characters are lively, and the plot progresses, well drawn, and what propels the narrative is that each of them has a different perspective on where Swivel should go for the future. Some feel that the town is losing religion. Others feel it needs to be more developed. Others are just fine with the way it is. Perry thrives in these conflicts and he pokes fun at modern life, switching between astute criticisms of marketing, reality shows, religion and capitalism, among many other subjects. “The Jesus Cow” is a slightly flawed, but ultimately intelligent book that reveals the absurdity of the modern condition. — Jason Barr SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a trio of recent thefts from businesses near Westlake Corner. The first theft occurred sometime during the evening of March 24 when a patio set was stolen from True Organics on Scruggs Road, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Maj. Mike Bowman said employees noticed the furniture

was missing when they arrived for work the following day. Outdoor wicker furniture was reported stolen March 27 from David James Homes’ model in LakeWatch Plantation near the Franklin County Family YMCA. The General Store on Scruggs Road also reported two outdoor chairs and a picnic table were stolen March 29. Rita Grisetti, co-owner of The General Store, said she never expected something like that would ever happen. “We have never had any problems.” Grisetti said that she once acci-

dentally left store items on display outside overnight, but when she returned the following morning, the items were still there. “Now we are paranoid,” Grisetti said, adding that she will no longer be as trusting. The two chairs taken from The General Store had been secured by a cable that was cut. Grisetti said the 10-foot picnic table would have needed a lot of strength to lift, as well as a large truck or trailer to haul it off. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reported it has no leads at this time. Investigators are look-

ing at surveillance video from area businesses as well as checking with area pawn shops and websites to see if there has been any effort to resell the items, said Capt. Paul Caldwell. The sheriff’s office asks that business owners and residents consider moving their lawn furniture indoors or to a place where it can be monitored by security cameras or alarms to prevent future thefts. Anyone with information is asked to contact Caldwell at 352-5174 or paul. caldwell@franklincountyva.gov.

Josh Gilbert of Roanoke, winner of the 5K, crosses a stream along the trail.

Dozens of runners braved the steep slopes and trails around the Smith Mountain Dam for the Dam 50K and 5K on April 1. This is the second year for the event that added a new challenge for the 5K runners. This year both the 50K and the 5K participants faced a 1,300-foot climb during one section of the course. Known as the “death climb” by runners, it was added to make the 5K one of the most difficult around, according to race organizer Lauren Acker. “The death climb is a big part of the 50K race,” Acker said. “We decided to make it part of the 5K so it would be the hardest 5K ever.” While the area had experienced heavy rain over the past few days, runners experienced good weather for race day. The course was mostly dry by the start of the

race. “The weather was beautiful,” Acker said. The top finisher in the 5K was Josh Gilbert of Roanoke with a time of 31:48. He admitted that the 1,300-foot climb was difficult. “I don’t know if there is a harder 5K anywhere around here,” Gilbert said. Erica Martin of Moneta was the top female finisher in the 5K with a time of 1:02:35. Stephen Mohr of Arlington, Virginia was the top finisher in the 50K with a time of 4:25:32. He placed fourth in last year’s 50K at the dam. Lindsay DiMarco of Durham, North Carolina was the top female finisher in the 50K with a time of 5:52:55.

d O c K tale HOUR

June, July, and August. These 92 days of the calendar encompass our collective exhale and need for a little R&R. We vacation, we relax, we frolic and we be merry. What often accompanies this universal time-out? The perfect summer song. There’s something magical about the summer months that brings forth in humans the need to connect through the gift of song. Outdoor concerts spring up across our landscape, encouraging us to pull out the lounge chairs, lawn blankets and perhaps a celebratory libation. Looking back across history, you’ll find that the summer concert is steeped in traditions of bandstands in parks and other public spaces. Larger musical events also gravitate to the callings of our summer fun sirens. Woodstock happened in August. Burning Man happens in August. Few other times of the year encourage dialing up the volume as we sing along with the sweet thumping vibrations of summer. OK, there’s Christmas, but that’s a specific holiday, and the December tunes are often the ones we’ve heard over and over for decades. What I’m alluding to here are musical sounds and lyrics with a certain joie de vivre; the encapsulation of that intangible spark that catapults a tune into classic summer song territory. The life cycle of the perfect summer song conveniently stretches out over the time frame of our summertime merriment. As example, I give you the classic summer song “Who Let the Dogs Out?” It begins with the “buzz.” “Who Let the Dogs Out? (WLTDO)” has been attributed to Trinidadian artist Asslem Douglas and then later covered by The Baha Men

STORy by Kimberly Dalferes

who recorded “WLTDO” in 1999 and released it as a single in July 2000. However, even before this release, the song had been buzzing around places such as Mississippi State University — the Bulldogs were using it as their anthem. It’s reported that the Seattle Mariners were the first major league baseball team to use “WLTDO” when they debuted the song as a joke at a June 2000 game. Part of the lore of the song is that the New York Mets also claim dibs as the first team to use the ditty in their ballpark. Suddenly, it’s everywhere. This is when the magic happens. A special, can’t-quite-nail-down-all-the-ingredients, recipe is bestowed upon the tune, and it explodes across the universe. “WLTDO” was everywhere. Blaring across every Smith Mountain Lake dock, blasting from boat consoles and lighting up car dashboards, everyone was exclaiming “Oh, I LOVE this song – turn it up!” The overkill. Eventually, many a summer tune heads into I-am-so-sick-of-this-song territory. Indeed, a few short months in, our glee turned to groans as we replied to no one in particular “I don’t care about those damn dogs!” A footnote is that in 2007 Rolling Stone declared “WLTDO” one of the top 20 most annoying songs ever. What will emerge as THE summer song of 2017? Is there another “Call Me Maybe” just around the corner? Tune in to find out. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of “I Was In Love With a Short Man Once” and “Magic Fishing Panties.” Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
