Greetings

On behalf of the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce and our more than 850 active business members, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the Lake Norman region. Nestled on the banks of beautiful Lake Norman, our lake towns offer the perfect opportunity for both visitors and newcomers to enjoy the lake living lifestyle of Cornelius and Mooresville, the smalltown college charm of Davidson and the vitality of Huntersville with its abundant shopping and recreational facilities.

Lake Norman, located just outside of Charlotte, provides visitors and newcomers with a window to the past and an eye to the future. The lake is home to the land where the Catawba Indians once walked, and the early European settlers made their stand. Today, it is home to vibrant business parks and retail centers. New neighborhoods have emerged and families have relocated to the area, making Lake Norman one of the fastest growing regions in the country.

Our proximity to the cultural opportunities of Charlotte, mixed with the charm and lake living lifestyle of our small towns, make

Lake Norman a great place to work, live and visit. We encourage you to use this important resource to enjoy our diverse array of retailers, shopping centers and restaurants. Treat yourself to the Charlotte region’s premier parks or take in one of our historical sites.

We hope Great Lake Living gives you a glimpse into why so many new families are making Lake Norman their home. Visitors and residents can browse VisitLakeNorman. org for more information on dining and entertainment, and newcomers and prospective businesses can find out more about the region at LakeNormanChamber. org. Again, on behalf of our business community and our lake towns, we welcome you to Lake Norman.

Sincerely,

How It All Began

A timeline of Lake Norman’s creation

Early 1900s - James B. Duke and Dr. W. Gil Wylie began brainstorming how a series of damns on the Catawba River could provide hydroelectricity to residents of the South.

Sept. 28, 1959 - Duke Power (now Duke Energy) breaks ground on the Cowans Ford Dam.

1963 – Bill Lee, the grandson of William S. Lee and the chairman of Duke Power Company, led the completion of the dam, which was completed at a length of 7,387 feet. The communities of two river crossings, Sherrill’s Ford and Beatty’s Ford are flooded, along with many original homesites, in order to complete the man-made Lake Norman.

1964 – Duke Power offers more than 2,600 cottage sites with leases starting at $120 a year.

1990s – Charlotte’s thriving business environment attracts more and more residents to the shores of Lake Norman when they realize they can live in a lakeside retreat with only a 30- to 40-minute commute into the city.

Today - Lake Norman remains a peaceful respite for an extraordinary community of people.

Other notable facts:

The Long Island Mill, one of the earliest cotton mills in the American South, opened in the mid-1800s, and closed in 1959 before being covered by Lake Norman. Underneath the lake, there are the remains of a summer camp that opened in 1938 as well as the site of the Battle of Cowan’s Ford where General William Lee Davidson fought Lord Cornwallis in 1781. There are also old plantations, old homesites, old highways, there is even an airplane discovered by firefighters using sonar in 2013.

BECAUSE OF LONG ISLAND COTTON MILL’S SUCCESS IN THE EARLY 1900S, THIS DAM WAS BUILT TO SUPPLY ADDITIONAL POWER IN 1919.

THE MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, NAMED FOR DUKE POWER PRESIDENT FROM 1959-1971 W.B. MCGUIRE, BEGAN OPERATING IN 1981.

Water Safety

Responsible Recreation

A look at our area’s personal watercraft safety laws

Living on a lake can be fun, but it’s important to know the rules to keep yourself and other passengers safe while out on the water with your personal watercraft.

Personal Watercraft Law

The N.C. General Assembly enacted a personal watercraft (PWC) law that took effect Dec. 1, 1999. On June 30, 2000 this law was amended. Below is a summary of the law:

Who Can Operate a PWC?

• Anyone 14 years old but younger than 26 can operate a PWC if: •they have successfully completed an approved boating safety education course (proof of age and safety course completion must be carried during operation); •they are riding with a person who is at least 18 and is in compliance with the Boating Education Requirement Law (G.S. 75A-16.2).

• It is unlawful for the owner of a PWC to knowingly allow a person younger than 16 to operate a PWC unless they have first completed an approved boating safety education course.

• It is unlawful for anyone who has temporary or permanent responsibility for a person younger than 16 to knowingly allow that person to operate a PWC unless they have first completed an approved boating safety education course.

PWC Operation

• No one can operate a PWC on state waters between sunset and sunrise.

• All PWC riders, passengers and those being towed must wear approved personal flotation devices.

• If the PWC is equipped with a lanyard-type engine cut off switch, the lanyard must be worn by the operator at all times.

• A PWC must have a rearview mirror or an observer on board besides the operator to legally tow someone on skis or similar device.

• PWCs must be operated at all times in a reasonable and prudent manner. Maneuvers that endanger people or property constitute reckless operation.

No person shall operate a personal watercraft on the waters of this State at greater than no-wake speed within 100 feet of an anchored or moored vessel, a dock, pier, swim float, marked swimming area, swimmers, surfers, persons engaged in angling, or any manually operated

propelled vessel, unless the personal watercraft is operating in a narrow channel (see below).

No person shall operate a personal watercraft in a narrow channel (see below) at greater than no-wake speed within 50 feet of an anchored or moored vessel, a dock, pier, swim float, marked swimming area, swimmers, surfers, persons engaged in angling, or any manually operated propelled vessel.

• No person shall operate a PWC towing another person on water skis or similar device unless the total number of persons operating, observing, and being towed does not exceed the number of passengers identified by the manufacturer as the maximum safe load for the vessel.

Reckless operation includes:

• Unreasonable or unnecessary weaving through congested boat traffic.

Jumping the wake of a vessel within 100 feet of the vessel or when visibility is obstructed.

• Intentionally approaching a vessel in order to swerve at the last moment.

Operating contrary to the “rules of the road”.

Following too closely (see below) to another vessel, including another personal watercraft.

Renting PWCs:

No one shall rent a PWC to someone under 16 unless that person meets the conditions in the section “Who Can Operate a PWC?”

• A minimum of $300,000 insurance must be carried on each PWC that is rented to the public.

Narrow channel: A “narrow channel” means a segment of the waters of the State 300 feet or less in width.

Following too closely : The term “following too closely” means proceeding in the same direction and operating at a speed in excess of 10 miles per hour when approaching within 100 feet to the rear or 50 feet to the side of another vessel that is underway unless that vessel is operating in a narrow channel, in which case a personal watercraft may operate at the speed and flow of other vessel traffic.

Live Like a Native

Celebrate our Region’s Scots-Irish Tradition

Loch

Norman Highland Games are an annual spring staple

If it’s April, it must be time for a long-standing Lake Norman area tradition — it’s time to make room on your calendar for the annual Loch Norman Highland Games and the accompanying festival celebrating Scottish heritage. The event is a recognition of the large number of ScotsIrish immigrants who settled in the Mecklenburg area in the 1700s. In fact, a majority of the signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence from British rule of May 20, 1775 (yes, a full year before our country’s Declaration of Independence was signed), were Scots-Irish. Several family lines remain here — particularly in northern Mecklenburg County – to this day.

Held at Huntersville’s Historic Rural Hill Farm, the games are a celebration that, according to local lore, may have first happened on U.S. soil more than 200 years ago in Ellerbe, North Carolina (about 100 miles east-southeast of Lake Norman). That may or may not be fact, but we can absolutely confirm that Rural Hill has been the games’ home for decades — in 2024, Lake Norman natives and those new to the area celebrated 30 years of the Loch Norman Highland Games and all its pageantry.

Festival goers can expect to see the heavy athletics hallmarks of any Highland festival, including tossing the caber, the hammer throw and tug-o-war. If not watching the athletic competitors, make sure to catch the Highland dancing or bagpipe band competitions, traditional and contemporary Celtic music performances and whisky tastings, or even try your hand at shooting a long bow or throwing a battle axe. There are also plenty of shopping

opportunities, food and beverage vendors and even a chance — with a little help from the various Scottish clan societies on hand — to possibly discover any Scottish or Scots-Irish ties of your own.

It’s not just the Loch Norman Highland Games that call Rural Hill home each year. On New Year’s Day, take part in the annual “First Footin’” to celebrate the Scottish new year or Hogmanay, a free event where guests can enjoy a bowl of vegetable soup and a guided walk around the property to learn more about Rural Hill’s history, which dates back to the 18th century.

In September, it’s time for the Amazing Maize Maze — a family-friendly event spread across seven acres and one of the largest corn mazes in the Southeast. Usually running from mid-September to early November, there are typically night maze events available as well, on Fridays and Saturdays in October.

And don’t miss the Rural Hill Sheepdog Trials and Dog Festival in early November. Watch champion Border Collies and their handlers who, using only voice and whistle commands to communicate, herd a flock of sheep through a series of gates and into a pen. There will also be plenty of kids’ activities, food and drink vendors, exhibits and demonstrations. And, of course, your dog is more than welcome to attend.

Learn more about Rural Hill and all it has to offer at www.ruralhill.net, or visit the farm at 4431 Neck Road in Huntersville.

Real Estate

You’re Home Here

A look at the current luxury housing market

Lake Norman, a picturesque haven nestled just north of Charlotte, is experiencing a real estate surge like never before. Buyers from across the country are flocking to this coveted region, drawn by its serene waters, lush landscapes and the promise of a luxurious lifestyle. The market here is undeniably on fire, with the landscape of property values and buyer expectations shifting dramatically over the past few years.

A Dramatic Shift in Entry-Level Luxury

One of the most notable changes in the Lake Norman real estate market is the significant increase in the entry-level luxury price point. What was once considered affordable for many local “move-up” buyers has now surged beyond reach for some. This shift is a testament to the region’s growing appeal and the influx of affluent buyers eager to stake their claim in this idyllic location. The heightened demand has led to a competitive market, where securing a property requires more than just financial readiness; it demands agility and a keen

understanding of current trends. Buyers are no longer merely looking for a house; they are in pursuit of a dream home, that may be among several they own and still property that blends modern sophistication with unique features.

The Appeal of Modern and Unique Homes

The Lake Norman market has seen a marked preference for newer, more modern homes. This trend reflects a broader desire for updated living spaces that cater to contemporary tastes and lifestyles. Properties boasting high-end finishes, cutting-edge technology and thoughtful design are at the forefront of buyer interest.

Buyers are seeking out “unicorn” properties — homes with distinctive elements that set them apart from the rest. Features such as solariums, wellness rooms and bespoke amenities are increasingly sought after. These characteristics not only enhance the living experience but also add a touch of exclusivity that resonates with discerning buyers.

The “Have It All” Property

According to recent reports, more than 44% of agents specializing in luxury real estate have noted a strong demand for properties that truly offer it all. These homes are characterized by their impeccable presentation, movein readiness and in many cases, new construction status. The ideal property is one that requires minimal immediate upkeep, allowing buyers to transition seamlessly into their new lifestyle. This preference for “have it all” homes underscores a shift toward valuing convenience and quality. Buyers are looking for properties that not only meet their immediate needs but also offer long-term value and comfort. The emphasis is on homes that need no immediate work and are ready to be lived in and enjoyed from day one, reflecting a desire for a hassle-free, high-quality living experience. As Lake Norman continues to attract attention from across the nation, the luxury real estate market is expected to remain robust. The combination of rising property values, an influx of affluent buyers and a strong demand for modern, unique homes is likely to drive the market forward. For prospective

buyers and sellers alike, understanding these trends will be key to navigating this dynamic landscape.

Overall, the Lake Norman market is thriving, with its blend of natural beauty and luxurious living creating an irresistible allure. As the demand for exceptional properties grows, both buyers and real estate professionals will need to stay attuned to the evolving preferences and trends shaping this vibrant market. Whether you’re seeking a dream home or considering selling, now is an exciting time to engage with the Lake Norman real estate scene.

Lake Norman eateries serve up diverse menus and flavors

One thing people in the Lake Norman area love to talk about is the food scene because there is such a vast variety here. Whether you’re looking for fine dining, healthy fare or international cuisine, you’ll never get bored of our food options.

Fin & Fino in Huntersville’s Birkdale Village is bright and inviting, with owner and veteran restauranteur Jon Dressler describing it as “a social seafood house where guests can shake off a busy day or shake up a slow one.” Fin & Fino offers small seafood plates and raw bar favorites as well as larger servings featuring a variety of ocean fare — perfect for sampling and sharing. There is also a selection of filet mignon, Delmonico ribeye, New York strip, short ribs, rack of lamb and poultry dishes, as well as homemade pastas featuring fresh, locally grown produce. Try one of their intriguing adult beverages (like the tequila-based “Yippee Ki Yay Mother Shuckers”) or have them create one from your own suggestions.

Tucked away in the Shops on the Green shopping center in Cornelius, French Market Café & Gourmet Shop offers guests a place to eat, shop and bask in the rustic but dainty mise en scène of the French countryside. It boasts not only an impressive menu from owner and classically trained chef Bob Montbleau, but a unique experience that guests won’t find anywhere else – such as its tearoom that is transformed into a new scene each month. In addition to the restaurant and tearoom, French Market Cafe also offers a wide selection of goods for purchase. These include fine beverages, chocolates, European delicacies and local specialties. For the sweets lover, French Market Cafe serves some of the best desserts and pastries in the country. If you’re looking for some casual bagel handhelds, try Sully’s Steamers in Davidson. Their bagel sandwiches are made like in the Bronx according to a special recipe, and

they make their own cream cheese. Other ingredients are locally sourced farm to table. The bagel sandwiches are customizable and can be made with numerous ingredients in a variety of flavor combinations. The made-to-order bagel sandwiches, unlike toasted bagels, are steamed in two cycles of one minute and 45 seconds, after which the meat and produce is added. The process results in a bagel sandwich that is often described as soft, oozy, warm and melty.

Sushi locations are abundant around Lake Norman, and one of the newest players is Kanpai Denver, which opened its doors in October 2023. In addition to its high quality hibachi menu (offered at both lunch and dinner and available in senior as well as kid-sized portions), Kanpai has introduced the tapas, or small plates, concept to the area, with larger parties enjoying the option of ordering several small plates to share. Don’t miss out on Martini Mondays, Tequila Tuesdays or Wine Wednesdays (half-priced house bottles). There is usually live music offered on Friday and Saturday nights, and reservations are highly recommended. No restaurant compilation is complete without an Italian mention, and Acqua Ragazza in Mooresville does not disappoint with its authentic Italian cuisine in an upscale but relaxed environment. The menu features Italian classics, handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza and flavorful entrees, all using the freshest ingredients. Try the Caprese di Bufala (made with authentic bufala mozzarella), the Ravioli Granchio E Aragosta (lobster and crab ravioli in a vodka sauce) or the Sogliola Alla Mugnaia, an entrée featuring sole in a butter, lemon and white wine sauce. The restaurant also offers a latenight menu from 9 to 10 p.m., and recently launched Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with options like Caprese di Bufala Benedetto and Holy Cannoli, a brioche cinnamon toast with cannoli filling.

Offerings range from Mexican fare to gourmet grilled cheese to falafel to pizza to lobster rolls. Find them at 562 Williamson Road in Mooresville or learn more by visiting www.kingcanarybrewing.com to view what’s on tap or what’s happening on the packed community calendar.

Volunteer Spotlight

Good Night, Sleep Tight

Making it possible for local children in need

We all dream of a good night’s sleep, but for many in our area that starts with needing a bed.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to building and delivering handmade, fully furnished beds to children in need.

Nationwide it’s estimated that childhood “bedlessness” –unfortunately, this is a word that has entered our lexicon – affects nearly three percent of the population. With 326 chapters across the country helping those in need, the Lake Norman-area SHP is run by husband-and-wife team, Connie and Dave Byers.

Since launching in 2019, the South Iredell Chapter has built and delivered more than 800 beds, with a goal to provide 1,000 by the end of 2023. SHP receives requests via their website but also through community organization partners including Pharos Parenting, I-CARE, Inc. /Head Start, Iredell County and Mooresville school districts, Guardian ad Litem, Hope of Mooresville, FeedNC, The Christian Mission and United Faith Alliance.

The chapter is made up entirely of volunteers, and all donations stay in the Lake Norman community to serve kids ages 3-17. All funds are used to build and deliver fully furnished beds. Other expenses and needs include tools, lumber and hardware for “Build Days,” and new mattresses, bedding and pillows for deliveries.

“All the beds we supply are new,” says Dave. “We not only build the bed components, but we deliver and assemble the beds in the homes of the children and provide the new bed frame along with a new mattress, new sheets, new pillow and new comforter or quilt.”

You do not need any experience to participate in a Build

BELOW, DAVE AND CONNIE BYERS LEAD THE LAKE NORMAN AREA CHAPTER OF SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE, WHOSE VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE BEDS TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN NEED.

Day; the builds and deliveries provide a great community involvement opportunity for families, corporate team building and even service projects.

The Build Days are open to volunteers 12 years of age and older (ages 12-17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian), and are typically held over a Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To host a successful Build Day, Connie and Dave need a minimum of 30 volunteers. After the Build Day, the delivery is very special.

“A family we assisted was a mother leaving a shelter and moving into her apartment with her four daughters,” Dave says, describing a particularly moving day. “Two of the girls had been diagnosed with cancer. One of the girls was having surgery two days after we placed the beds. If these beds had not been placed, she would have come home from the hospital and would have had to sleep on the floor. She was very grateful and asked her mother to let us know how good it was to sleep in her own bed.”

SHP delivers beds almost weekly throughout southern Iredell County and northern Mecklenburg County. The delivery teams require six to eight volunteers, and there is always the need for more help.

“I have the privilege of contacting and working with the families who request beds,” Connie says. “I hear the heartfelt stories of both hardship and triumph, and of course on delivery days get to see the smiles and sometimes get hugs from the grateful children and parents.”

North Carolina has long been considered the furniture capital of the United States, and no three cities are more tied to furniture than Hickory, High Point and Thomasville. Despite recent trends toward moving production overseas, some of the best-known brands in the furniture industry remain headquartered in these three cities. In fact, some of the most extravagant furniture you’ll ever see moves through these areas. Take a short drive to Hickory Furniture Mart on Highway 70, where you will find hundreds of name brands made in America as well as outlets for pieces ready to take home. High Point hosts a twice-a-year furniture market that attracts thousands of industry buyers from all over the world.

Greenville Drive Time: 2 hours

Greenville, S.C. has become well known in recent years for being a hub of culture, outdoor adventure, food and beer. The streets and parks of the city are home to almost 100 pieces of public artwork. There are also many places to shop in Greenville, from storefronts displaying funky pieces of artwork to antiques, to farmhouse décor, urban outfitters and boutiques with carefully curated clothing brands. There’s also an Artists Guild Gallery co-op that represents more than 20 local artists and many other storefronts where you can shop for handcrafted mixed media pieces, jewelry, watercolors and photography.

Asheville Drive Time: 2.5 hours

Asheville is western North Carolina’s largest city and serves as the business, cultural, shopping and dining hub of the mountains. Asheville is known across the world for being a mountain gem, as it has an arts scene filled with concerts,

festivals, art galleries and performances. The city is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known for its natural beauty. The Blue Ridge Parkway, which brushes Asheville, attracts motorists each October when the trees begin to turn. Charleston Drive Time: 3.5 hours

Few destinations anywhere are as splendid as Charleston, S.C. Make one trip to this charming southern city and you’re sure to be back. Charleston is located on the coast and is considered by many to be the South’s cultural capital. Dining in Charleston is world class, and the city’s dozens of restaurants offer Lowcountry menus that simply can’t be beat. Here you’ll find beautiful gardens wedged between historic pastel homes — many of which were built before the Civil War (which started in nearby Fort Sumter). Beachgoers are also at home in Charleston. Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island and Sullivan’s Island offer a variety of fun for those wanting to hit the sand.

Myrtle Beach Drive Time: 4 hours

Sports

‘Show Up, Set Up, Drink Up’

There’s always been this inherent tension between traditional tennis players and devotees of pickleball. Some folks play both, with varying levels of success. But there is a distinct, and rather vocal, divide when it comes to adherents of the 140-plus-year royal tradition of tennis and the pickleball upstarts with the noisy “kuh-dink kuh-dink” of their wooden paddle and plastic oversized whiffle ball. You can probably guess which camp I populate.

Well, folks, everybody can just calm down. There is a better way to enjoy a racquet sport, regardless of talent or equipment. And it all starts — and ends — with a beer.

Welcome to “ServeAces,” the brainchild of Amy Brandon, executive director of the Lake Norman Tennis Association (LNTA). And before we go any further, please take a second to pronounce ServeAces out loud ... we’ll wait. Yep, I saw it. The light just clicked on, didn’t it? Now you understand just what beer might have to do with a tennis league.

Part of her role with LNTA is a mission to grow the game, and to provide playing opportunities to those of all ages and abilities. After all, trying to learn tennis as an adult can be a daunting prospect. Understanding the scoring, finding the right equipment, wearing the proper gear, and heck, even finding a place to play can all be a bit intimidating. So, Brandon thought, why not bring the game to where folks like to gather?

“Let’s do it in the breweries,” she says when describing the beginnings of her ServeAces Mini Tennis Brewery League. “I was trying to find a way to get non-tennis players with a racquet in their hand. We just wanted to bring tennis to people in a non-threatening environment.”

Eight years after that little brainstorm, and it appears Brandon and the LNTA are on to something. Starting in 2016 with only four sponsoring breweries and 64 players, it has grown to more than a dozen sponsors throughout the Lake

Serving up fun at local breweries

region and can claim roughly 500 players a year across more than two dozen teams.

Part of the attraction to ServeAces is how simple Brandon has kept it to make it easy to participate. The Thursday night Social division is for players new to tennis as well as old hands at it, but every point played in the Social division has to have a “newbie” on the court. There is also a Monday night Growler division for the more competitive players.

There’s no complicated tennis scoring – the first one to 21 points wins, and you tag in new players every eight points. When players arrive at the scheduled brewery for their match, everything is there waiting for them – 21” junior racquets, a large foam ball, the pop-up net and even the tape to mark off the 18’ x 36’ court. Everyone having to use the same equipment is a great equalizer, as is the requirement that the ball must bounce in every point – no smashing it out of the air at the poor, unsuspecting newbie on the other side of the net.

“Show up, set up, drink up,” Brandon says. It’s just that simple.

The top team at the end of each season wins customized pint glasses with their team name and the honor of hosting the end-of-season party. There’s even the traditional winners’ plaque, with team names added at the end of the spring and summer seasons.

But this may be the only tennis league in which there is an unspoken race for the bottom, if for nothing else but to hold the coveted “Dead Last” award. It is a trophy resembling a miniature toilet bowl, engraved with “Try Again Next Year.” Funny thing, though. You can’t find a picture of anyone hoisting the Dead Last toilet who isn’t wearing an ear-to-ear grin.

Or holding a beer.

Visit www.lnta.org for more information, or contact Brandon at director@lnta.org or 704.746.2897.

Faith

The Spiritual Side

Finding your place of worship

Places of worship are an important part of our community, and many have taken root throughout the towns over the years.

Most of the early European settlers here in the 1770s were Scots-Irish or Scottish. History has it that one of the oldest churches in the Lake Norman area began when a group of Christians gathered on the bank of a creek under a bank of trees they called “Ramah Grove.” While the first log structure housing the church was constructed in 1783, the current sanctuary used for Ramah Grove Presbyterian Church was built in 1881. The church still stands today. Hopewell Presbyterian Church off Beatties Ford Road in Huntersville also has a rich history, having been officially founded in 1762. Davidson College Presbyterian Church was founded in 1837.

In Cornelius, Bethel Presbyterian Church was founded in 1828 and still

flourishes in the lakeside town as part of the Presbyterian movement called ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians. The community is also home to Grace Covenant Church, which started out as Cornelius Tabernacle under the leadership of Dr. S.K. and Emily Clanton in 1937. Grace Covenant now serves parishioners through services at three different campuses — 17301 Statesville Road, Cornelius; 761 River Highway, Mooresville; and 296 N. Hwy. 16 in Denver.

Serving both the Denver and Huntersville communities, Lake Forest Church is a member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church denomination. Freedom to worship all types of denominations is alive and well here. You’ll also find The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Davidson is home to the Davidson Friends Meeting House for the Quaker community and

Temple Kol Tikvah, serving the Jewish community.

To help accommodate the growth brought on by the construction of Lake Norman, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Mooresville raised funds for the building that still stands today from the early 1960s. You’ll find St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville and St. Therese Catholic Church in Mooresville.

For those who prefer a more contemporary form of worship, there’s also a variety of non-denominational churches spread throughout the area, such as Elevation Church, Journey Church, Newsong Church, LIFE Fellowship Church and many others. These houses of worship are only the beginning of a very long list – because no matter where you prefer to seek out spiritual comfort, you’re sure to find what your soul desires in the towns of Lake Norman.

Recreation

Fun and Recreation around the Lake

Water and nature invite outdoor enthusiasts

Some of the things that attract so many people to the Lake Norman area are the mild temperatures, four seasons and abundance of recreational activities. Here are a few suggestions for outdoor recreation.

At the northern most point in Troutman, there’s Lake Norman State Park, an ideal place to enjoy the area’s natural beauty and go running or mountain biking. The 1,328-acre park includes 13 miles of shoreline along the northeastern shore of Lake Norman. There is a 125-yard beach and public swimming area, which is supervised by lifeguards seasonally, as well as a concession stand, showers, restrooms and changing stalls.

Lake Norman has a great public park system that will never leave you bored. In Cornelius, Ramsey Creek Park is a 43-acre waterfront park with boat-launching areas, docks, a fishing pier and a public swimming beach. Visitors can rent large “funbrellas” to utilize on the waterfront picnic area. There are also picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, a three-acre dog park, playground and nature trails.

Jetton Park in Cornelius is a 104acre park that has a beach area, wooden gazebos, a formal garden and a playground. There are also eight tennis courts and paved walking and biking trails, most of which wind through nicely shaded wooded areas. For a small fee, visitors can rent

waterside picnic decks equipped with a grill and a table.

For those who love physical activity . . .

Each town has a robust parks and recreation department that offers affordable classes and excursions, with many of them being outdoors. Many of the breweries also offer running and cycling clubs, yoga, paddling and other activities where you can socialize while getting in a workout.

For the nature-lovers . . .

Check out the Latta Plantation Center and Nature Preserve in Huntersville. It’s situated on more than 1,000 acres on Mountain Island Lake. There, you’ll find hiking trails and the Carolina Raptor Center, where visitors can observe more than 25 species of raptors living along a Raptor Trail with a self-guided tour. Plus, visit the newly opened Quest education center.

To the ones that never can stay on land . . . In Huntersville, Blythe Landing offers 26 acres of fun, from floating piers and boat ramps to a beach and playground, as well as picnic areas and sand volleyball courts. Blythe Landing is also home to Lake Norman Community Sailing. They offer a variety of sailing programs for all ages if you’re feeling adventurous.
