Our small team of seasoned professionals were truly sailing into a new era, and we were scared to death. What if it didn’t work? What if the businesses in the area wouldn’t support it? Maybe I’ll even enjoy a cool adult beverage from time to time and flip through the pages of a really nice magazine.

On a crisp afternoon in October, Davidson College formally revealed and dedicated a memorial to the enslaved and exploited people who built and sustained the College since its founding in 1987.

Set along a walkway in front of the Cunningham Theater, the sculpture, titled With These Hands, is a pair of bronze hands, palms open, their surfaces marked by fine lines and creases. Its size and weathered appearance remind passersby of the magnitude of Davidson’s debt to the individuals who, for decades, worked at the College without pay or recognition. One hundred twenty of their descendants attended the ceremony on the College’s Historic Quad, alongside hundreds of students, trustees, and other town residents.

Crafted by New York–based conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas, the memorial was years in the making. Davidson established a Commission on Race and Slavery in 2017, and its 2020 report included a timeline of the presence and contributions of Black people at the College. The report also offered recommendations for future action, including a permanent marker acknowledging the ways in which Davidson benefited from the “stolen labor of enslaved persons.”

College President Doug Hicks began his tenure at Davidson in 2022 and stepped into the Commission’s ongoing work. At the end of the ceremony, Hicks was reflective and acknowledged that the College’s work to recognize the darker sides of its history must and will continue.

“It was an amazing day to bring this kind of community together, from those who identify as descendants of enslaved persons or those who’ve worked at Davidson over the years, with our faculty, staff, trustees, and students,” Hicks said. “I think this is a culmination of important work, and it’s also the first day of the next stage of work of being in a more inclusive community.”

He hopes the sculpture invites pause and attention.

“We want it to be a conversation starter,” Hicks said. “We want people to be curious and reflective, to respect those people who these hands represent.”

One hundred twenty descendants, alongside students, trustees, and town residents, attend the dedication event.

Anthony Foxx, former Charlotte mayor and U.S. secretary of transportation, chaired the Commission. He said the memorial stands as a national example.

“I hope that it’s a reminder that our histories are all shared in this country. Black and white people have shared the same space, but in different ways,” Foxx said. “We often don’t give ourselves credit for the shared experiences we have, and frankly, the legacy that separated us still lives with us in certain ways today.”

Hillary Green is a historian and the James B. Duke Professor of Africana Studies. She worked closely with the Commission on Race and Slavery and brought her students into the research as well. She said the work of identifying and documenting family stories is incomplete and echoed Hicks’ sentiment that this moment marks only the beginning.

“My students and I are continuing to research the names [of descendants],” Green said. “Some of the names that are being shared today, we did not know before. Writing the biographies of every person and building upon this trust to do other things, whether it’s classrooms, collaborations, or descendant outreach to provide input, will continue through student research and teaching.” www.LNCurrents.com | JANUARY 2026

Discover what’s in store for the 2026 Visit Haywood Ice Fest Weekend, from local gems to an ice-themed schedule of events.

Four years ago, Maggie Valley in Haywood County hosted its first ice festival, drawing visitors from across the Southeast. With so much enthusiasm for winter activities and cold-weather sports, event planners expanded the festival to include Canton, Clyde, Lake Junaluska, and Waynesville.

In 2026, Visit Haywood Ice Fest runs from Jan. 29 through Feb. 1.

With even more activities—from ice skating and ice sculptures to shuffleboard and cool jazz—Haywood County, an hour west of Asheville, 24

welcomes visitors to the festival. Dollars spent at bed-and-breakfasts, hotels, restaurants, and shops continue to support the community’s economy and recovery efforts following Tropical Storm Helene.

During Visit Haywood Ice Fest, guests may ride the shuttle to the festival’s signature events and enjoy an ice-themed brunch on Sunday. Lake Junaluska’s walking paths pass by a labyrinth, eateries, and shops.

Add a 45-minute tour of Winchester Creek Farm, a 20-acre farm in Waynesville, to your weekend. Meet Olaf and Sven, pygmy goats; Thor and Loki, dogs who protect the alpacas and sheep in the pastures; and Sam, the Goldendoodle who greets guests.

The farm features a micro-miniature Scottish Highland cow (the

second smallest in America), two belted miniature Galloway cows, and miniature donkeys. Most of the animals came from rescue situations.

Next to the Ice Extravaganza is Cabbage Rose, a 10,000-squarefoot shop with an eclectic collection of gifts, Christmas decorations, flower arrangements, jewelry, and local art. Meet the owners, Troy Graves and Scott Nielsen, who have operated the store for more than 35 years.

A quiet place to pause: benches sit along the green at the new Lake Norman Golf Club.

When Kyle Cerminara learned that the former Mallard Head Golf Club was up for sale, he knew exactly what he didn’t want to happen. Dozens of bidders were circling the property, many eyeing the valuable Brawley Peninsula land for development. Cerminara had a different vision—one that involved keeping every fairway intact and bringing the course back to life.

“We said, ‘We want to make this a much nicer club,’” Cerminara explains. “‘We want to keep it as a club. We want to keep it affordable, but improve the prestige.’”

Five months into ownership, that vision is already taking shape.

Cerminara didn’t have to look far for the right person to lead the transformation. Gavin Arseneau, a seasoned general manager with a track record of turning struggling clubs into thriving destinations, had just wrapped up a successful stint at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach. Before that, he spent more than a decade at Trump National in the Lake Norman area, where Cerminara witnessed firsthand the steady improvements Arseneau brought year after year.

“It didn’t get better the first year, instantly,” Cerminara recalls. “It was nice and steady over his tenure. The customer service improved, the course improved, the restaurant—everything improved.”

When the timing aligned, the partnership felt inevitable. Arseneau came on board, and within days, the work began.

The team has adopted a simple mantra: ACE—Affordable, Casual, Elegant. It’s a philosophy that positions Lake Norman Golf Club as a middle ground between the exclusivity of Trump National and the public option at Mooresville Golf Club.

Memberships launched at $6,000, with plans to grow alongside the amenities—doubling within a year and eventually tripling as improvements roll out. Within ten days of opening enrollment, 80 members had signed up, including former UNC basketball coach Matt Doherty, Mooresville Mayor Chris Carney, and former Cornelius Mayor Mike Foster. The club plans to cap membership at 500 to preserve the experience—think ten-minute tee time intervals instead of five-hour rounds.

The course itself is a George Cobb design. Cobb built some of golf ’s most enduring layouts—Quail Hollow in Charlotte, Wildcat in Cashiers, and the par-three course at Augusta, among them. “Just take those old records off the shelf; I’ll sit and listen to ’em by myself.” Bob Seger was on to something—whether you play LPs (long plays) alone or invite friends to join the party, playing and collecting records is on the rise. With a rich history and sound quality, vintage vinyl is not only surviving but thriving. And now veteran vinyl heads and fledgling collectors alike have a cool new shop in Cornelius to find those records that will “light your fire”: Old Town Vinyl at 21333 Catawba Ave. Owners Chris and Allie Sewell opened their doors to this nearly 1,000-square-foot, retro-vibe record shop on October 1, 2025.

“The response from the vinyl community has been fantastic,” Chris says. “We pay attention to new releases and records selling well, but the community drives what we acquire.” Allie adds, “We listen to our customers and what they want in the store. So the hunt continues.” Because every age, from pre-teenagers to seniors, is buying vintage treasures and new releases, their selection runs the gamut.

Always acquiring a robust collection of new records, customers can see what’s currently in-house through Old Town Vinyl’s Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. From garage grunge rock to country and western to heavy metal, to freshly pressed editions and collectible boxed sets, it’s all here. Depending on the day, you might see old Sinatra, Beatles, Nirvana, Marvin Gaye, Dolly Parton, Pearl Jam, the Monkees, Gary Numan, Alice in Chains, or the Black Crowes.

“Record stores generally have a lane they’re in,” Chris says. “We have all genres, but I’m pretty proud of the jazz selection we have right now. I’ve been working hard to curate a strong jazz collection— Miles Davis, John Coltrane.”

Vintage LPs usually range from $8 to $10 and up to $30. New records are generally $20 to $85. “The quality of the records being pressed now is all very high,” Chris says. “A new record has substance to it.” New LPs are sometimes in color or liquid-filled. “I’m a sucker for a pretty colored vinyl—pink, purple, or translucent,” Allie says.

“Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ is espresso-filled.” If you’re looking for a deal, Old Town Vinyl has $2 and $5 bargain bins of vintage LPs, and customers sometimes buy those just for the cover art. OTV also buys old LPs. If you’re a newbie and need something to play your records on, they sell a variety of entry-level turntables, a limited number of high-end turntables, and speakers with Bluetooth.

Natives of Connecticut, the couple moved to Lake Norman 15 years ago, settling in Cornelius in 2018. Chris was working in the boating industry before opening Old Town Vinyl. He is also a professional musician and guitarist for the local instrumental jazz, blues, and rock band Goodfoot Down. But his newfound passion is manning the shop and scouting new finds. Allie works full time as an HR executive in the energy industry but helps with social media and more.

She designed the shop’s dope décor. Their daughter, Luna, a Hough High graduate and college student, assists at the shop and helps them vet new selections. “She gives us suggestions all the time, and they pay off,” says Allie. “It’s been fun to see her musical interests expand as well.”

RESOLUTIONS

Since this piece reflects forward on the upcoming twelve months of 2026, keep the idea of New Year’s resolutions in mind as you read.

I begin, as I usually do, with a personal story—this one about my upbringing.

I was born and lived for fifty-nine of my 79 years in the Deep South.

I have lived in the Tar Heel State for the last 20 years, which is definitely not in the deep-hot-as-an-oven South. The Deep South is South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Florida is geographically in the South, but with so many Yankees taking over cities and elections, I excluded it from the criteria for the “Deep South.”

You see, I am a flatlander, so Tennessee and North Carolina were omitted, even though I am in awe of the mountains, rather like I was of the tall buildings the one time I went to New York City.

I grew up as a Bible-believing Baptist Alabamian who, as an elementary student, stood before our congregation on a Sunday night and recited—in order—every book of the Bible! I was raised from birth on the Southern values of hospitality and kindness, politeness and 44

LAKE NORMAN CURRENTS | JANUARY 2026

manners, family and community, faith, honor and honesty, family reputation, self-reliance, and pride in learning.

“Yes ma’am” and “no ma’am” were nonnegotiable when speaking to adults, from kinfolk to strangers—no matter their race, religion, or station in life, even if they were Yankees—just kidding. Those Southern values for living with other people continue to reside in me today—in my children and grandchildren.

I also grew up in a South without diversity. The only Black person I really knew was “Mr. Slim,” my Daddy’s good friend when they worked together as mechanics at McConnell Cadillac in Mobile. I have written before about the lifelong image of Mr. Slim standing in the back of the white-filled Wilmer First Baptist Church. That image at my Daddy’s funeral is as significant today as it was in June 1995.

In the span of my lifetime, I have seen monumental positive societal changes in the South and in our country. However—and that’s a big however—those changes have regressed almost beyond recognition.

We are angry over the most incidental things. We can’t talk politics at the dinner table. When we disagree, we don’t talk it out; we don’t

laugh it out; we often shoot it out. Were I European, I would be hesitant to bring my family to many parts of my beloved America.

something with which we might disagree. What a stupid reason not to talk to each other.

“Really?” you ask.

To be honest—really honest—we must trust and be trusted in turn.

It is trust that inspires me to be honest and to put aside the hurt I have experienced before, and not to fear stepping out in faith in my relationships with others. And it is this honesty, based on trust, that builds bridges to the past and the future—the ability to look positively forward without looking back with regret at the faults we have overcome to reach where we are right now.

Do you ever feel hesitant to attend an activity at night in the heart of Charlotte because it feels too dangerous? It was not this way when I arrived twenty years ago. Watch the local evening news, especially on Mondays. Then watch the national news to hear the same events echoed across our nation—in our schools and houses of government—and tell me I am wrong.

Sadly, I see no path forward for our country in 2026 that does not resolutely include family, hospitality, kindness, politeness, manners, faith, honesty and honor, self-reliance, community, and a love of learning and work at the heart of any path we take.

Of these values, I believe honor and honesty are at the center. We must admit that we have hurt and been hurt. We have accused falsely and been falsely accused. We do not really know what motivates our neighbors’ actions because we have not asked, for fear of hearing

The trust we need is not possible without forgiveness. Not the I-willforgive-but-I-damn-sure-will-not-forget kind of forgiveness, but the I-willforget forgiveness because I trust you. Unless this happens, there will never be the reconciliation our country desperately needs and deserves.

Without this true forgiveness, we have only empty political apologies, as worthless as political promises.

Resolve to let us forgive ourselves, our loved ones, our neighbors, those we disagree with, and even our enemies. And let us move forward in truth, honesty, and love, as the Almighty intends for our world. www.LNCurrents.com | JANUARY 2026

The One Big Beautiful Bill, signed in July 2025, delivers sweeping tax relief and new opportunities for individuals. Here’s what you need to know to make the most of it.

Permanent Tax Cuts The bill locks in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act rates (10–37%), avoiding the scheduled increase after 2025.

The higher standard deduction remains: $15,750 for single filers, $31,500 for joint filers, and $23,625 for heads of household.

Slow Cooker Indian Butter Chicken Slow Cooker Indian Butter Chicken is the perfect bowl of comfort food for cold January evenings. It’s cozy, creamy, a little spicy, and filled with warming Indian flavors. Finish each bowl off with steamed rice and serve with fresh naan. You’ll have the perfect dinner that can be enjoyed any night of the week.

For any of you who are are not familiar, Butter Chicken it’s one of the most popular Indian curries served around the world. But contrary to it’s name, this lighter version does not contain any butter. Coconut milk adds the buttery creaminess without the dairy, and the slow cooker does all the work. If you are short on time, you can skip the skillet, and simply sprinkle the onion to the bottom of the slow cooker, then add the chicken and pour the coconut milk mixture over the chicken so it is completely covered. After cooking is complete, shred chicken and add back to slow cooker with the lime juice. Serve and enjoy!

Servings: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 4 hours

Ingredients: 1.5 pounds chicken breasts or thighs 1 medium onion - diced 2 teaspoons coconut oil 4 cloves garlic - minced 1 teaspoon fresh ginger - grated 1 teaspoon coriander 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon cardamom 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4-1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) 1 (14 oz.) can coconut milk - (full fat) shaken to combine 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste Juice of 1 lime

Heat coconut oil in a Medium skillet over medium heat. Add onion and saute until translucent and tender. Add garlic, ginger and spices to skillet and cook while stirring for 1 minute. Stir in coconut milk and tomato paste and stir until well combined.

Add chicken to slow cooker and pour sauce from the skillet over top. Cook on high heat 3-4 hours, or low heat for 6-8 hours. After cooking is complete, shred chicken and add back to slow cooker with the lime juice. Serve with steamed rice and naan, and garnish with avocado or sour cream. Enjoy!

Note: You need to use canned coconut milk, that is full fat, to achieve the creamy sauce. If you use the boxed, or refrigerated coconut milk, you will be disappointed.

A Slice of Home

There’s a rhythm to lunchtime at Brooklyn South. The parking lot fills, familiar faces settle into familiar booths, and the aroma of fresh dough and bubbling cheese drifts through the dining room like a quiet promise kept. For nearly three decades, Craig and Lucy Caminiti have been at the heart of it all—not just making pizza, but weaving themselves into the fabric of Cornelius.

The couple arrived from Long Island in early 1996, part of a family business relocation that brought them south. When February greeted them with sixty-degree sunshine while their old neighbors shoveled snow, they knew they’d made the right choice. They settled into Cornelius and took stock of the local food scene. What they found—or rather, didn’t find— sparked an idea.

Craig had been making pizza since his teenage years, and the competition at the time amounted to a handful of national chains.

“We knew what we could do,” he recalls, “so we knew we could be successful doing that.”

On October 8, 1998, Brooklyn South opened its doors in a small space at the newly built Harris Teeter shopping center on Catawba. The community had watched the sign go up for weeks, and when opening day finally arrived, Craig remembers a “bull rush” of eager customers 56

pushing through the doors. That first year was a blur of long days and hard lessons—chief among them, accepting that not everyone would love what he loved.

“Here I am, fifteen hours a day, grinding, trying to put out the best product,” he says. “And I wasn’t everything to everybody.”

Rather than compromise, they stayed the course, trusting that consistency and quality would speak for themselves.

It did. Brooklyn South recently earned the Best of Lake Norman award for Best Pizza in 2025, an honor the couple has received several times. But ask Craig about the accolades, and he’ll steer the conversation back to something simpler: the regulars who return week after week, the staff members who’ve been there for over a decade, the kids he’s watched grow up.

“That means as much or more to me than an award,” he says.

Through nearly thirty years of change—the explosive growth, the pandemic that tested every small business owner’s resolve—Brooklyn South has remained a steady presence in a community that embraced two transplants from New York and made them its own. Craig and Lucy aren’t going anywhere.

As Lucy puts it with a smile, “We settled here. We haven’t left.”
