he older I get, the more conscious I try to be about not wishing time away. I realize it’s a little early to be making a New Year’s resolution, but after a very crazy year for my family and me, it’s the absolute right time to resolve to thoroughly revel in all things Christmas this year. It’s always been my favorite time of the year, but as you know, it’s so easy to get caught up in plain old life. Before you know it, the season has whipped past you as fast as the wannabe NASCAR drivers occupying every lane of I-40.
So this year, the Christmas trees (yes, plural) went up before Thanksgiving, and I’m actually doing some gift shopping other than a panicky trip through
our local stores on Christmas Eve. One of those gift ideas is going to include a possible new hobby for my darling little grandbaby, and I know just where to find what she’ll need. She lives in a lovely and very rural part of Lincoln County, and after talking with Sean Ryan, the owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Hickory, I’ve decided I’d like to introduce her to all the beautiful feathered creatures inhabiting her parents’ piece of paradise.
Ryan’s store is a wonderful collection of everything a back yard birder – whether an old hand or one just starting out –would need to not just indulge their bird watching habit but to be an active participant in providing them safe feeding and nesting areas. The store’s friendly and knowledgeable staff will guide you
through everything you could imagine, regardless of the type of birds you’re hoping to attract. It’s a wonderful hobby that you can practice at any age and level of experience, and I hope it’s one that my granddaughter will enjoy for years to come, and one that we can actually do together.
Whether you’re traveling to far-flung places for the holidays to catch up with family and friends or simply welcoming the same to our beautiful part of the state, I wish you a very joyous and peaceful Christmas and a wonderful start to the New Year!

“My favorites were the hummingbirds that dueled over the lone feeder that hung outside my bay window.”

One of my earliest memories of moving to North Carolina almost 25 years ago is sitting in our breakfast nook by the bay window that overlooked our backyard, marveling at the sheer space our small family now called our own. Moving from a bare tenth of an acre lot in lovely (but oh so crowded) San Diego to our Lake Norman area home in a space on orders of magnitude more than that at a fraction of the price, I felt like landed gentry. The luxury of not being able to touch my neighbor’s fence by reaching out my kitchen window was glorious, and having an expanse of backyard bordered by pine, sweet gum, poplar and oak trees for privacy was just too delightful for words.
But what I really remember was the abundance of beautiful wildlife. While I wasn’t thrilled to learn that the rabbits and deer in the area were quite fond of the cheerful purple and yellow pansies I planted out back (it was a short-lived experiment
and I think the rabbits were actually laughing at me while I watched them gobble up the colorful plants), it was a treat to watch the comings and goings of our region’s eclectic collection of flying friends.
At the time, I wasn’t sure what I was marveling at, but quickly learned that it was a colorful menagerie of everything from cardinals to finches to the little wrens that made nests in my hanging plants. My favorites, however, were the hummingbirds that dueled over the lone feeder that hung outside my bay window. Had I known to consult my local Wild Birds Unlimited store for hummingbird tips, I would have learned that spacing multiple feeders at least 10 feet apart would have called a truce to the battles and brought peace to our little corner of paradise.
That’s just a small morsel of what I learned speaking to Sean Ryan with Wild Birds Unlimited in Hickory. He is a wealth of

information, as is his entire staff, when it comes to all you need to know about the wildlife just beyond your windows and how to fully enjoy how they can enhance your relationship with nature.
Wild Birds Unlimited is a specialty retail franchise dedicated to bringing people and nature together through the hobby of backyard bird feeding. Founded in 1981, the company has grown into one of North America’s most recognized and respected nature retail brands. With more than 350 stores across the United States and Canada, Wild Birds Unlimited combines a passion for wildlife with a proven business model centered on education, customer relationships and community engagement.
At its core, Wild Birds Unlimited focuses on providing high-quality bird seed, feeders, birdhouses and nature-related gifts. However, what truly sets it apart is its emphasis on customer experience and connection to community. Each store
serves as both a retail outlet and a local resource center where customers can learn about native birds, feeding practices and environmental stewardship. Staff are trained to offer expert advice tailored to local bird populations and habitats, helping customers attract and care for birds in their own backyards.
What you’ll find at the Hickory location is everything you might need to bring more feathered friends into your backyard, as they specialize in helping birdwatchers and backyard nature enthusiasts support and enjoy wild birds. That could include:
• High-quality bird seed and specialty blends tailored to local species
• A wide selection of bird feeders, nesting boxes, baths and hardware, including pole systems and squirrel-proof models
• Expert advice and education on how to attract more birds, feed responsibly and enjoy backyard birding as a hobby. They emphasize that they aren’t just a store but a place to learn. But it’s not just about what you can buy there — there’s

more to why a visit to Wild Birds Unlimited can help bring out your fledgling wild birding aspirations. Ryan’s staff are knowledgeable and passionate about birding and can walk a beginner through what you would need to purchase to get started, everything from seed types to where to place feeders to the local bird species you can attract.
The store is well-stocked with bird feeding basics as well as premium feeders and specialty items, such as pole systems and “no-mess” seed blends which are harder to find otherwise. The Hickory store also acts as a local nature hub – you’ll find a variety of events, such as the “Edible Bird House Workshop,” as well as educational content geared to seasonal bird feeding practices.
And if you’re ready to kick your bird watching habit up a notch, Wild Birds Unlimited in Hickory has guidance on how to get your backyard credentialed as a Certified Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Certified Wildlife Habitat program.
According to the NWF, the North American bird population has decreased by 2.9 billion breeding adults, a net loss of 29% over the last half-century. Scientists have identified habitat loss as the biggest reason for the decline. Wild Birds Unlimited is proud to be the Champion for the NWF Certified Wildlife Habitat® program, with a goal to inspire everyone to create a haven for wildlife in their yard. A Certified Wildlife Habitat is a special designation by the NWF that recognizes yards, gardens, school grounds and other spaces that provide the essential elements birds and other wildlife need to thrive.
Wild Birds Unlimited in Hickory is standing by to help you create a Certified Wildlife Habitat ideal for birds at your home, using specific requirements as stipulated by the NWF. Those requirements include providing adequate food sources such as native plants, supplemented by bird feeders with high-quality seed blends; fresh, clean water availability for drinking and bathing; shelter and cover options for birds to feel safe from predators and harsh weather; safe places to nest and raise their young; and sustainable practices that include reducing pesticide use, composting, mulching and using native plants to ensure a balanced ecosystem.

Once you’ve met all the requirements, you can apply for certification through the NWF’s website. Successful applicants receive official recognition, including a Certified Wildlife Habitat sign, which helps inspire others in the community to create their own nature-friendly spaces.
If you’re looking to enhance your backyard bird habitat in the Hickory area — with quality products and knowledgeable service — the Wild Birds Unlimited store in Hickory is a solid choice. Whether you’re just starting out or have been feeding birds for years, the combination of product variety and local expertise makes a difference.
