BEHIND THE SCENES

With a mild spring, our maintenance crew worked diligently to clean the outdoor pool to get it summer-ready early!
RELAXATION
Story & Photography By Em von der Ruhr
Isn’t that what we all aspire for ourselves during the summer months? The heat waves lulling us into a lazy trance of sitting under the sun, backyard barbeques, tanning with a summer read, catching up with good friends with a cool drink in hand. Sounds like a dream, right? As much as we desire this summer rejuvenation, it’s too easy for those three golden months to get stuffed with summer school, work deadlines, camps for the kids, weddings, and before you know it, you only have one week of summer not filled to the brim and it’s your planned family vacation.
It can be hard to focus on relaxation when you’re used to such a go-go-go schedule, which is why we’re here to promote time for you to take it easy. When the heat waves start rolling in, it’s time to kick back, feel the sunshine on your skin, and just chill out.
Surfs Up!
Feel like taking a dip? Sheboygan is the Freshwater Capital of the World, and this draws a lot of surf culture to the area. EOS Surf Shop is a surf, kayak, and paddleboard outfitter located in downtown Sheboygan, near the lakefront Anything from rentals, to lessons, watersport gear, and cool surfculture merch, it’s a Sheboygan staple you’ve got to check out. You’ve never seen this much surf culture this far from California, that’s for sure
While surfing might not strike you as the most relaxing thing you could indulge in on your vacation, for some, the experience of trying something unique is an act of relaxation and self-prioritization Plus, after your excursion you can hang out on the beach for as long as you want, watch the rolling waves you conquered, and sip a drink.

Welcome to the Malibu of the Midwest
Stay awhile We bet you never would have guessed these photos were taken in Wisconsin. Stunning beaches are plentiful in Sheboygan. Kohler-Andrae State Park is a gorgeous park with sand dunes, winding beach trails, plants and wildlife, and beautiful terrain that almost seems like it could be straight out of Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
You can easily spend all day in this gorgeous preserved state park and still return the next day to see more of the beaches and trails! Why not take a summer picnic to the dunes? Pack juicy watermelon, fresh ripe berries, a charcuterie board arrangement of your favorite snacks and dips, and of course something sweet for dessert, but make sure you’re responsible with any waste and protect the park, beach, and water Any trash you bring is trash you take home with you.

Post-Poolside Treats!
What’s better than chilling on a pool float on a hot summer afternoon? Ice cream by the pool! Imagine finishing off a fun day laying by the pool, splashing in the water, and reading while laying on the pool deck, birds chirping,
Summer Strolls Along the Lakeshore
Leisurely summer strolls are a slightly different take on relaxation. Sometimes relaxation means crashing out in a comfy seat, other times it can mean connecting with nature, and submerging yourself in the natural world. Walking along water is actually proven to decrease stress levels and calm our bodies and minds.
Whether you’re in need of a mental health break, hoping to enjoy the outdoors, or disconnect from your phone and emails, the lake and it’s soothing waves are waiting! Follow the breakwater out to the Sheboygan lighthouse, located on Deland Park This lighthouse has been standing since 1915, and is a popular photo op destination in Sheboygan (see our article Instagrammable Sheboygan on page 11).

some mixology inspiration and try not to get too thirsty looking at a few of our favorite goto summer orders
One of the easiest and best ways to indulge in relaxation this summer is by kicking your feet up and sipping a special drink. If you are a person okay with making or ordering “the usual,” switch it up each summer with a new go-to. You’re likely to associate a specific drink or scent with a particular time in your life, so choose something you want to fondly remind you of the summer of 2024.
Exciting Escapism
During your day-to-day life, when you find yourself eager for rest or a day to yourself, envision yourself flipping mindlessly through a magazine, delving into a book you seem to never have enough time to make progress reading, or take an hour or two to recharge your batteries in peaceful contemplation at Bookworm Gardens.
Perhaps partaking in your hobby, such as doing something artistic or playing an instrument, or maybe just sitting in a comfy chair and calling a friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with will give you a little escape Or simply take a refreshing and cozy nap, curling up in your favorite spot like a cat.
Whether it’s during your vacation or an average afternoon at home, prioritize carving out a little bit of space for yourself to slow down and manage your energy levels. Stress from our everyday schedules eats up your energy more than you think, so ensuring you have as little as 20 minutes of “me time” a day can really make a difference Whatever floats your boat and feels recharging for you, make it a habit this summer to incorporate relaxation into your daily routine.

Instagrammable Sheboygan
Story & Photography By Em von der RuhrTHE LIGHTHOUSE
The Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse has been standing on the breakwater off Deland Park since 1915. The first lighthouse was located on North Sheboygan Point, but after structural issues, erosion, lamp upgrades, changes to the piers, and change of ownership, the lighthouse ended up further inland where you‘ll find it still standing today. Besides being a historical landmark in Sheboygan, it’s a popular destination to get pictures. The lighthouse is Instagrammable whatever the weather may be, from a moody photo of the waves crashing starkly against its red exterior or a bright and sunny photo against blue skies and an expansive horizon This is a staple for capturing the essence of Sheboygan
BLUE HARBOR RESORT GRAND STAIRCASE

Another popular and well known photo op in Sheboygan is behind Blue Harbor Resort, on the grand white staircase leading up from the beach to the patio of the beautiful resort Locals gather to take prom photos there, it’s a popular wedding and family photo destination, and a gorgeous backdrop for any special occasion no matter the direction you‘re facing. Both the staircase and building itself look royal and the views of the lake from there are fit for royalty too.
RIVERFRONT & SOUTH PIER
The Sheboygan River flows into Lake Michigan and divides the downtown district of Sheboygan into the Riverfront boardwalk and South Pier Drive, both of which are beautiful to stroll while stopping to browse the shops and restaurants along these boardwalks. Between the business fronts, and the river feeding into the lake, the abundant photo opportunities are right in front of you Shots of the water, the docked boats, kayakers, and paddle boarders all capture the liveliness of this area. It’s also a great destination to get family or couples photos, or just have the spotlight to yourself overlooking all the blue surrounding you.

Summer Skincare
Story By Em von der RuhrIt’s time to inhale and exhale the easy, breezy summer season with days spent under the sun, splashing in the water, and following the wind to adventures anywhere and everywhere. While the window of opportunity to stretch out under the warm and radiant sun always feels too short in Wisconsin, you don’t want to damage your skin in the process of soaking up all of summer’s enjoyment. As much as you love bronzing your skin while basking in the warm glow of the sun June through August, the sun can be damaging to your complexion in the long term. Keeping your skin safe from the harsh summer rays, ensuring wrinkles stay at bay, and maintaining a glowing, hydrated look is the ultimate summer skincare goal. That is why we’ve compiled these top three summer skincare recommendations to help you achieve and maintain the perfect summer skin.
This is beginners as well as frequent facial lovers because of its relaxing capabilities and hydrating properties. It’s customizable for all skin types whether you have dry, oily, sensitive, or combination skin. Start your summer with the Farmhouse Fresh facial to prime your skin, shed the dry winter skin, rehydrate, and refresh your skin so you can enter your summer feeling rejuvenated.

With the summer sun on the horizon, you’ll want to enter the season on top of your skincare wellness to stay ahead of the damage and harshness the season’s sun can inflict. You can book an appointment for all three of these services in Reflections Spa & Salon located on the first floor at Blue Harbor Resort in Sheboygan, WI.

Lake Life Vacation Into
Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the Malibu of the Midwest, is nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan with everything you love about Door County, in only half the drive!
Sheboygan offers quaint lakeside views and sandy beaches, boutique shops, outdoor dining, and activities for summer vacation, and the community is active throughout the winter too with lively entertainment, outdoor recreation, and events. But Sheboygan isn’t just a summer vacation destination, it’s an opportunity.

In Sheboygan you can own a home (or second home) for less, raise a family in a safe community, invest in real estate for a brighter future - maybe start your own shop or restaurant. When you couple the lake life amenities with the true ability to be a part of an amazing community, Sheboygan is very attractive. Imagine putting down roots planting a spring garden, picnics on the beach, a bike ride on the boardwalk, and long summer nights fading into autumn afternoons before the snow blows in over the lake for the winter.

Local Spotlight
Story By Lisa K. Adams Photography Provided By Sean Quinn“My biggest inspiration in life are the creators and visionaries... the people who talk of change and creation, and then act on those words.”

Sean Quinn of The Kramer Group Real Estate Consultants was born and raised in the Sheboygan area. He spent the last fifteen years or so attending school and working elsewhere, but he and his wife moved back to the area recently to be close to friends and family, especially with two little boys (ages three and one) to raise
“I love all of the amenities Sheboygan has to offer,” exclaimed Sean. As a big food and beverage connoisseur, Sean appreciates Sheboygan’s sneaky good food scene, but he’s not just a consumer. In his spare time, Sean brews his own beers and practices fine dining cooking and barbeque techniques, as well as hunting and harvesting his own produce and meat
Sean believes the surrounding communities each have their own identity as well with wonderful shops, services, hospitality, and welcoming personas. There are surprises in every community across the whole county, but the biggest shock is the low cost of living price tag compared to major cities like Milwaukee, Madison, or even Door County.
While Sean has only been with The Kramer Group just under a year, he brings over a decade of commercial and residential real estate and facilities management experience to the table. He was attracted to The Kramer Group because they are not just sales people, they are real estate consultants who have been involved in the Greater Eastern Wisconsin real estate region for a number of years. Agents hold the most important accreditations to best serve their clients with a mix of skills, making the group a one-stop shop for real estate in Sheboygan And because they are a boutique firm, they have the ability to give their clients extra attention as they’re not just focused on chasing the next lead.

It is this extra care and attention that creates the space for The Kramer Group agents to truly connect to the community Sean thrives in this role, curating meaningful personal connections and becoming an ambassador to Sheboygan He loves being out in the community to appreciate all Sheboygan has to offer and take note of all the opportunities at hand. It is in this connection, and putting clients at ease during arguably the most stressful purchase of their lives, that Sean hopes he will help curate the future of the community through real estate.
With Lake Michigan as Sheboygan’s greatest feature, Sean believes this is a wonderful place to grow for his young family and two dogs (Duke and Mack), as well as create a home away from home, or develop a new business if you have the vision.
Currently, Sean is working on putting together an informal business development and representative group To start a conversation with Sean about what you would like to create in Sheboygan, email sean@thekramergroupwicom, call 920-645-4022, or stop by his happy hour meet the agent event Thursday, June 20th from 4pm-6pm at On the Rocks Bar & Grill at Blue Harbor Resort.

FLAVORS Summer
Story & Cover Photography
By Em von der RuhrAdditional Photography Provided by Johnsonville, 3 Sheeps Brewing Company, & Harbor Centre BID
Juicy watermelon, dripping dreamsicles, sizzling hot dogs, and sweating spritzers; summer is home to some of our favorite flavors. There is no better time for outdoor cookouts, picnic lunches, patio dining, and lingering over glasses of wine from late afternoon to well past sunset.
The anticipation of summer is not just for kids eagerly awaiting the end of school, the unique flavors are enticing enough to make anyone excited for the season To inspire your kitchen recipes and dining plans this summer, we’ve compiled our favorite summer flavors and where to find them in Sheboygan to indulge your taste buds

Although we’re a fan of hot dogs and hamburgers, here in Sheboygan we are particularly passionate about the brats We are the Brat Capital of the World (after going head-to-head with Bucyrus, Ohio in 1970 to claim the title).
Johnsonville Marketplace and Miesfeld’s Triangle Market are two local favorites to buy

brats, however, The Northwestern House and Four of a Kind are restaurants where you can enjoy our famous brats while dining out
SWEET ICE CREAM
As the dairy state, Wisconsin takes ice cream and frozen custard very seriously. Who doesn’t love a dripping ice cream cone or a chilled sundae on a summer afternoon?
An ice cream after hitting the beach especially hits differently and thankfully, South Pier Parlor, Shoreline Café, and Blast Soft Serve are all a short walk from the waves. The pinnacle of a summer sweet treat in Sheboygan, South Pier and Blast are open seasonally. Our mouths are watering just thinking about the cold, sweet, sugar rush.
SIPPIN’ ON SUMMER
Tequila sunrises, Piña coladas, sangrias, and spritzers galore We’re yearning for endless summer sips under the sweltering sun.

Thankfully there is no shortage in Sheboygan.
Enjoy $5 cocktails for Sunday Funday at Parker John’s along Riverfront Drive with indoor and outdoor dining options. There’s no way you’ll want to miss out on these summer sips!
If you’re a beer fan, head to 3 Sheeps Brewing Co for chill beer and chill vibes Featuring communal seating, outdoor games, picnic space, and live music, you’re sure to make a few friends. If you roll up to Vollrath Park on Mondays between 4 pm and 8 pm, you’re sure to find the streets lined with food trucks! Everyone finds exactly what they’re craving with everything from Jamaican, Thai, Greek, and Mexican to desserts and donuts. Selection will vary from week to week

A membership includes admission for general visits, special members-only events, advance registration for select events including the very popular Secret Garden Dinners, a members-only newsletter, 10% off in the Nature Shop, reduced registration rates for select programs, and even reciprocal admission at over 345 gardens across North America.
DONATE
Support Bookworm Gardens’ next adventure: a NEW Family Restroom Building, Exploration Garden and Classroom Yurt. The new restroom building will triple the restroom capacity and help provide a more magical visitor experience for all. Inspired by the book series An Egg is Quiet (Dianna Aston), the building will include multiple familyfriendly, ADA accessible restrooms, child and adult changing stations, and a care room for nursing mothers. Construction will soon proceed on the core site expansion with the completion of the Classroom Yurt and will be home to the nature preschool, summer camps, early childhood programs, and the Exploration Garden, bringing the book Swirl by Swirl (Joyce Sidman) to life through hands-on discovery.
VOLUNTEER
Bookworm Gardens would not exist without the help of amazing volunteers who share a passion for literature and gardening. In 2023, 470 volunteers throughout events, education, and horticulture donated 3,117 hours of their time, an equivalent to $93,416 of paid labor Opportunities to get involved range from Garden Maintenance Worker and Handyperson to Reader, Event Assistant, and Tour Guide.
With the help of all those who donate, visit, and volunteer, the Gardens have become a place of joy They’ve proven that even the smallest seed of an idea can grow into something amazing. With continued support, Bookworm Gardens will write the next chapter in their story as not only a place where books come to life, but where outdoor learning and nature exploration can thrive
