Being a September child, I find Autumn’s magical shifting of colors always heralds a more restive tempo. Somehow the air becomes soft with scents of bonfires and apple cider, we curl up in classic Adirondack chairs to watch the sailboats gently drift by, and are gently reminded that change can be good. Come enjoy the fall season with us here along the shores of Lake Michigan and discover why we say, “It’s better at the Blue.”

COASTAL AUTUMN
Story & Photography By Em von der Ruhr
The season for slowing down, keeping cozy, and admiring bursts of Mother Nature’s color has finally arrived! In Wisconsin, we tend to take autumn pretty seriously. After all, this beautiful “in-between” weather is fleeting Winters in Wisconsin are long and cold and summer reaches humid heights, but fall weather is most frequently in that sweet-spot of 50 to 60 degrees when it’s cool enough to wear your favorite layers, yet still warm enough to spend time outdoors without bundling up
Life on the lake here in Sheboygan is a special time when autumn is in the air. The leaves on trees glow in warm tones like the sun shining through brightly-tinted stained glass windows, and soothing warm scents fill the chilling air. Mist rolls off the grey waves of Lake Michigan and a distinct line is drawn as
summer season. Time spent walking up and down a crisp beach, or bundling up in a blanket on the sand to enjoy the scenery is one of our favorite fall pastimes here along the shores of Lake Michigan and perfectly encapsulates a coastal autumn
Coastal autumn is the metamorphosis that takes place in September, bridging our busy summers bustling with tourists to a slower pace, returning Sheboygan to a smallish lakeside town Seemingly overnight, our Midwest beach town is bustling with fall color and increasing winds coming off the lake, urging us to ditch our linens, beach towels, and iced drinks, opting instead for jackets, flannel picnic blankets, and steaming cups of apple cider The blues, grays, and whites of summer linger into the late weeks of September and the chillier months of
“The season for slowing down, keeping cozy, and admiring bursts of Mother Nature’s color has finally arrived!
you near closer to the lake where the crisp air meets the cold moisture coming off the water. We love taking strolls alongside the water, watching the trees slowly retreat into themselves day by day, clutching a hot beverage, wearing our favorite layering pieces, and enjoying the mystifying state of autumn on the shoreline. This feeling, is a little thing we like to call coastal autumn.
AUTUMN ON THE BEACH
Although a beach scene is always beautiful, you may tend to picture a bright and gleaming summer beach with hot shimmering sand, striped umbrellas to shield you from the beaming rays of the sun, and cool water to splash around in when the heat on land becomes unbearable. But a beach vacation goes beyond the heat of the
October and November, contrasting with the stunning beauty of more fiery and earthy colors erupting along the shoreline.
We take pride in the unique atmosphere of Sheboygan during the fall, which is why the beach is such a special place as summer fades to autumn. Flannel patterns and cozy knits seem like a juxtaposition to the thought of the beach at first, until you reimagine it with golden leaves scattered on the sand and a chilled, musty scent drifting in and being carried away with the waves. So lay down a flannel blanket on the beach and enjoy the brisk air, or stroll up and down the shoreline drinking in the view of Malibu meeting the Midwest
If you can’t get enough of our coastal
autumn vibes, you’ll want to bring a piece home with you At Blue Harbor Resort you can peruse a gallery of local seasonal art from the Sheboygan Visual Artists. They sell some of their work in The Boutique at South Pier in Blue Harbor as well as in their own gallery. Purchasing a unique piece created by a local artist is a way to integrate coastal autumn seamlessly into your life at home The depicted scenes of the beaches, waves, and colors of Sheboygan tie in the coastal influence of our unique town in such a way that it matches every season.
ORCHARDS, PATCHES, AND HAYSTACKS
This year, we encourage you to indulge in the unique scents and tastes of autumn, sweet cinnamon, cloves, orange citrus, and warm baked goods. The world outdoors is slowing down, crisping up, and chills lie damp in the air inspiring us to enter a season of calmness, relaxation, and keeping warm. Sometimes, the simplest recipes hold the most comfort, like a spiced hot apple cider or a squash casserole. We’re in the Midwest after all, everyone knows how much we love casserole
Apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and farms with plenty of other fresh and cozy goods are plentiful in Sheboygan. Being located in the dairy state, we are passionate about our cheese to say the least We love creating seasonal charcuterie boards with freshly produced flavors of Wisconsin. Cranberries are the state fruit and the perfect addition to a spread of cheese, herbal crackers, nuts, and slices of fresh, crisp apples
Wisconsin is known for its cheese, brats, and beer and we are quite enthusiastic about all three in Sheboygan! Not only are we the brat capitol of the world, but we’re home to the
famous 3 Sheeps Brewing Company. Nothing pairs better in the fall than an Oktoberfest beer, grilled brats, and fresh cheese
Incorporating seasonal, local goods into your kitchen is another one of our favorite ways to indulge all five senses to fully immerse yourself in the spirit of this cozy season. Tastes and scents can transport us, both in time and place. Bringing home a taste of Sheboygan will remind you of the memories made during your trip, prolonging that vacation feeling!
Another way to bring a taste of coastal autumn to your home kitchen is with wine tastings at Blue Harbor Resort. With lakeside views, six Broken Earth wine samplings, and an individual charcuterie plate filled with seasonal Sheboygan flavors, you’ll want to purchase a bottle or two so you can revisit this memory all season long. Pop the cork on those special travel memories from Sheboygan in the comfort of your own home with a glass of Broken Earth wine to ease into a cozy autumn weekend
AUTUMN NIGHTS BY THE FIRE
Although bonfires are an activity that we closely associate with summer, fall bonfires

are the perfect activity for a chilly evening as the sunset creeps in earlier, and the weather for cozying up by the fire becomes ideal. Roasting marshmallows over the open flame and enjoying the sweet, melting chocolate surrounded by crisp graham cracker is an ideal fall treat. Gather around the fire pit with blankets enjoying the company of family and friends while taking turns roasting marshmallows over the autumnal flame You can even incorporate fall flavors into your s’mores by adding sliced apples and butterscotch in between cinnamon graham crackers. Sometimes all it takes are simple seasonal flavors and scents to indulge in the spirit of the season
There’s something about evenings that feels almost sacred to the autumn season. Maybe it’s the association of Halloween night approaching, or daylight savings surrounding us in the dark earlier in the evening, but spending time under the moonlight in the fall is another one of our favorite aspects of the season. We’re used to summer nights on the patio, walking the boardwalks, and gathering around beach bonfires, but autumn is the last season in Wisconsin where you can truly enjoy sitting out under the stars with a fire before winter drives us back inside

with the windows closed tight. For those reasons, outdoor bonfires are a key component of coastal autumn in Sheboygan.
Bonfires on the lakeside lawn of Blue Harbor Resort, as well as s’mores supplies, are available for guests during fall on Friday and Saturday nights. S’mores supplies are available at the front desk (while they last) and our two bonfire rings offer more than enough Adirondack chairs to go around! We highly recommend exchanging ghost stories, giggles, and making fond family memories around the fire to compliment this autumn activity. Enjoy the lakeside air, the feeling of huddling close to the flame, and the autumn chill drifting in from the lake
Sheboygan boasts many elements of typical autumn to complement the lakeside culture so well it creates its own unique feeling. Orchards and pumpkin patches, forests, and farmhouses, the land here melds with the seasons like caramel in a melting pot. There are plenty of activities in the area during the “ber” months, September through December. With harvest season being plentiful, the variety of color and beauty the changing landscapes reveal, and the mild dipping temperatures, autumn is mesmerizing in our small, coastal town.
Coastal autumn is about enjoying the outdoors while witnessing the beautiful bursts of color across the land, allowing ourselves to slow down, catching our breath over a hot drink, and savoring our favorite warm memories made over the last few busy months. If you’ve been looking for a sign to take a fall vacation to Sheboygan, this is it!

DOMINION OF TERROR

Story By Em von der Ruhr
Photography Provided by Dominion of Terror
The Dominion of Terror is a tried and true Halloween experience that’s been haunting the Sheboygan area for fifty years. A seasonal haunted house attraction, the Dominion of Terror (DoT) is unlike any other haunted attraction you’ve ever heard about Not only are they Wisconsin’s longest-running haunted house, but they are a haunted attraction with a surprisingly soft and caring mission: “Raising money for OUR community, one scare at a time!”
Organized by the Sheboygan Jaycees, the DoT is a non-profit haunted attraction in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Looking for opportunities to raise money for their chapter in 1974, the vision for creating a haunted house as a non-profit was born. That first year the Jaycees charged just $1 per person for their haunted house and handed out free coloring books to children who came through the attraction. Fast forward fifty years, the haunted house is still running and staffed entirely by volunteers In addition to the haunt, they have an escape room, a children’s matinee with trick or treating, and a scary good time even while you’re waiting in line.
For the last eighteen years of operation, the RCS (Respect Community Solutions) Empowers, Inc. has provided the property where the haunt is located. The RCS is another non-profit organization that aims
to empower individuals with special needs and disabilities, providing work opportunities allowing for them to thrive. Out of gratitude for the space, the DoT has donated back to the RCS each year since they moved their haunt onto the RCS property
Everyone involved in the production, from set building to casting and scarers, are volunteers who bring this “nightmare” to life. Each year, more than seventy-five volunteers work together to get this production ready for hundreds of guests to walk through more than twenty terrifying rooms in the haunted house. Although the haunt is only open during spooky season, the design, construction, and teardown is a year-long effort The summer is a tireless season of tearing down the previous year’s setup and working on new horrifying rooms.
Jodie Zajkowski, who has been involved with the project for over twenty-five years and is a co-chair this year, explained how special everyone who contributes to the project is. The volunte

greatly appreciated At the end of the day, whether you enjoy traditional haunted houses or not, the best way to support the DoT is by visiting!
Last year, the proceeds of the haunt benefited many local charities including, but not limited to, RCS Empowers, the Sheboygan County Humane Society, Sheboygan County food banks, local volunteer fire departments, Mental Health America, the Sheboygan Recreational Department, and Freedom Cry.
Additionally, the DoT is a proud sponsor of “Don’t Be A Monster,” a nation-wide antibullying campaign focusing their efforts on students in 4th through 10th grades, empowering others, celebrating uniqueness, and contributing towards creating a kinder world. Truly a fitting tie-in as October is national bullying prevention awareness month.
Located at 2024 N 15th Street in Sheboygan, the Dominion of Terror haunted house opens for the season on October 4th and runs through November 2nd. Check out more details about their events on our Halloween Events feature on page 14 and for more information, or to get involved, visit dominionofterror.com.

Local Spotlight
Photography Provided By Johnsonville Marketplace
“Customers come from around the globe and make it a destination.”
Monica Wind, Johnsonville Marketplace Manager has been with the Johnsonville Marketplace team since the store opened in 2021. With a background in retail, she was excited to help develop the concept for this new store.
At the time, Johnsonville provided the opportunity for team members to purchase their sausage products, but they saw a need to expand shopping hours for staff while also enhancing the selection of branded merchandise Combining these initiatives created a shopping destination for tourists and day trippers as well as the local community. It’s also resulted in Blue Harbor Resort carrying Johnsonville's goods in the resort restaurants.
The Johnsonville Marketplace is a unique shopping experience. It is the only retail store carrying over seventy-five Johnsonville sausage products for starters! They also offer a wide variety of Wisconsin specialty foods like cheese, hard rolls, kringles, pizza, gelato, chocolate, rubs, condiments,
and pickled food. Spirits, wine, and liquor as well as custom designed gift bags and baskets round out the selection with seasonal branded apparel, drinkware, and gifts interspersed throughout the store.
The most unique retail item recently reintroduced for sale exclusively at the Marketplace was the Sizzling Sausage Grill, previously selling on Ebay for $400!
The signature BRAT sculpture outside the Marketplace has also proven to be a tourism draw, as well as the source of a number of interesting customer comments Monica mused that one customer, clearly not from Wisconsin, wanted to know what the word BRAT meant, while an Illinois resident reported the offensiveness of the sculpture to the city planning department, mistakenly thinking it referred to a naughty child
There is never a dull moment at the Johnsonville Marketplace! The staff have fun every day interacting with their customers, learning what brings visitors in to the store and how far they have travelled to visit. It has become apparent that worldwide, people love Johnsonville sausage!
Johnsonville Marketplace is located at N6877 Rio Road in Sheboygan Falls, only about 20 minutes from Blue Harbor Resort. Follow them on facebook for sampling events and specials. Military personnel receive a 10% discount every day.
