announced for LWA's 'Clue'

scribed the show as the following:

"It's late summer, 1954. The night is dark and stormy, and you've been invited to a very unusual dinner party. Each of the guests has an alias, the butler offers a variety of weapons, and the host is, well . . . dead. So whodunnit?

Join the iconic oddballs known as Scarlet, Plum, White, Green, Peacock and Mustard as they race to find the murderer in Boddy Manor before the body count stacks up. Based on the cult classic film and the popular board

game, 'Clue' is a madcap comedy that will keep you guessing until the final twist."

The play was written by Sandy Rustin, based upon the works by Jonathan Lynn, Hunter Foster and Eric Price.

"Clue" opens Saturday, June 3, with a dinner show at 6:30 p.m., and additional performances are set for Sunday, June 4, and Sunday, June 11, at 2 p.m.; Friday, June 9, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, June 10, at 7 p.m.

Local youth awarded Bobcat fair scholarships

Bobcat Contracting has awarded 11 Helping Raise Kids by Raising Projects Scholarships to Hill County students interested in showing steers at the annual Hill County Fair.

The $2,500 scholarships will help Hill County exhibitors buy, raise and show their steer projects.

Winners are Hallie Blackwell, Abbott FFA; Keagan Boyd, Hubbard FFA; Kenna Claridy, Hill County 4-H; Graham Crose, Aquilla 4-H; Karissa Harwood, Whitney

FFA; Matthew Hurt, Itasca 4-H; Jay Lavender, Blum FFA; Listen Machac, Abbott FFA; Jillian Milam, Whitney FFA; Saber Reese, Bynum FFA; and Xavier Trato, Aquilla FFA.

The scholarship was open to all Hill County students who will be in grades 3-12 during the 2023-2024 school year and would be first-time steer exhibitors or only have one year of experience showing steers.

Students submitted an essay outlining why they are interested in showing steers and

why they should be selected. Recipients receive $2,000 now to purchase their steers and help with expenses.

The remaining $500 will be awarded after the Hill County Validation in June.

Award checks are available for pickup at Bobcat Contracting through Larry Little. Bobcat Contracting continues to be a strong supporter of the Hill County Fair and emphasizes that it recognizes the value of raising kids through the opportunity of raising cattle.

While breakfast is served, Hill Regional pointed out that if anyone feels called to serve as a CASA volunteer they will be given information to help them make a decision.

CASA assists many Hill County children as they go through the court system and is always in need of additional volunteers. Training is provided. Everyone is asked to join the hospital for this annual event to raise funds and awareness for an important program to help local children.

Churches to observe 'Blue Sunday'

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and to remember the millions of children who are victims of abuse/neglect, Blue Sunday Child Abuse Prevention is asking the faith community to pray on Sunday, April 30.

Child Abuse Prevention Month began when a report about abused and neglected children caught the attention of President Ronald Reagan in 1983. Sadly, since that first Child Abuse Prevention Month, the number of abused victims has grown from half a million children to over six million new reports of abuse along with 1,600 child abuse related deaths annually. One is too many.

The facts are: one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday; most child abuse incidents are drug and alcohol

Probably the most implausible phenomenon in our solar system is a solar eclipse —not to be confused with a lunar (moon) eclipse. It is a time in history that our Moon is exactly the right size and distance between the Sun and Earth to hide the Sun from viewers on Earth. Astronomers say that’s a 1,000,000,000,000 to 1 chance of happening.

Would you believe we have TWO eclipses in the next 12 months! An annular eclipse (that’s when the Sun is only partially covered by the Moon) will occur in October in South Texas. Nearly 75% of the Sun will disappear behind the Moon as we watch from our planet.

The other eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024, and the Sun will totally disappear for four or five minutes. It will

Born and raised in La Paz, Bolivia, Eduardo Berdegué moved to Texas in 2000 with his family and his camera. With his wife, Claudia, he owns Hillsboro-based Divine Home Care Services. A founding member of HAL, in 2020 Eduardo established fotografías, a photography-focused gallery within the offices of Divine Home Care in downtown Hillsboro. This year’s exhibit showcases images captured during a weekend-long, 1,346-mile drive along the Texas coast with the sole intention of introspecting and capturing images in each of the 13 cities in Texas that have the word port in their names.

Sheri Hemrick’s family has been in Hill County since the mid 1800’s, so that’s probably why she loves to photograph in Hill County. Nature photography is her passion. Hemrick has been involved in many types of photography, including weddings, documenting social events, school events, sports and portraiture. Her work has been published in local and international publications. She is the photographer for the Cameron Park Zoological and Botanical Society in Waco and volunteer photographer for Lake Whitney State Park. Her exhibit is entitled “Colors of Texas.”

Jerry Hissong is a local photographer and retired military officer who has won several photo contest awards. He has traveled to 20 countries and all 50 United States. His framed and canvas photos are sold under his business banner, My Quality Travel Photos.

At an early age, Marian Kalka received a camera for Christmas. She has pursued photography with a passion for the past 15 years or so. Her passions are landscape and western photography. She travels extensively, documenting her surroundings with a unique perspective.

Kent Moody is a serious,

amateur photographer, born in Wichita Falls and now resides in Hillsboro. Kent's love of photography has taken him to many places in the USA and abroad. Kent loves to spend his spare time (and money) traveling and photographing to back roads of Texas.

Tickets are available for $15 through Friday, April 28, from Eventbrite.com, and they will be $20 the day of the event. Check-in for the art walk will be at Hillsboro Arts League, 54-A West Elm Street.

Participants will stroll between Decades Antiques and fotografías/Divine Home Care Services on East Elm Street, Gold Nugget Pawn on East Franklin Street, Overflow Coffee Company on West Elm Street, and Lemon Blush Boutique on South Covington Street.

Wineries offering a taste of their vines this year are Juniper Cove from Whitney; Bar Ditch from Stephenville; Tara Vineyard of Athens; Kuhlman Cellars of Stonewall; and WineShop at Home, a Napa Valley, CA, company. Each location will offer at least two different wines to taste.

At fotografías/Divine Home Care, Cheryl Moniz will present wine etiquette lessons at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The Texas wineries will also have bottles for sale.

Child care is available during the event through Little Bear’s Clubhouse, located at 77 North Waco Street. They can be reached at 254-266-5843.

Horse owners urged to participate in survey to update Texas equine data

Courtesy Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service

To understand the true size and impact of the state’s horse industry, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horse specialists stress the importance of current data, and they say it’s time for Texas horse owners and enthusiasts to stand up and be counted in the American Horse Council’s survey.

The AHC National Economic Impact Study survey counts horses in Texas pastures and paddocks, and AgriLife Extension specialists aim to harvest more extensive “breakout data” that measures horse industry impacts, involvement and economic contributions. Current Texas horse industry breakout data is over 15 years old.

The survey results will provide the informational power to substantiate the value of the horse industry, said Chelsie Huseman, one of two AgriLife Extension horse specialists in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Animal Science.

The survey will analyze the direct effects of the industry as well as indirect and induced effects. The surveys will include expenses related to the care and training of horses for racing, competition and recreation. It will also gather information on spending by non-owners for activities such as riding lessons, trail riding and going to the races.

Vendor, cook sign-up opens for Churrofest

Hillsboro Main Street is accepting vendor and competitor registration for this year's Churrofest set for Saturday, May 13, in downtown Hillsboro.

The event will feature a churro cook-off with professional and amateur cooks and will crown "The Best Churro in Hillsboro."

The headliner for this year's event will be Chris Perez from the Selena band. Christi Lux will also be performing.

“We need to have a sizable number of responses to say this data accurately reflects the horse industry in Texas,” Huseman said. “The horse industry contributes significantly to the Texas economy.”

She has stepped up this year to ensure Texas is among those states receiving state economic impact breakout data from the American Horse Council’s national survey, which started this month and continues through September.

“The AHC National Economic Impact Study is one of the most comprehensive studies for the nation’s equine industry,” Huseman said. “And now more than ever, it is essential to get state breakout data secured for Texans.”

Industry changes need to be assessed

Chelsie Huseman, Texas A&M AgriLIfe Extension Service horse specialist, is encouraging all horse owners to be a part of the Animal Horse Council’s survey to ensure accurate reflection of the Texas horse industry. Michael Miller/Texas A&M AgriLife horse slaughter facilities, and most recently, the pandemic. We know that had to greatly influence the industry and horse ownership, but we have no idea to what degree.”

among several top equine events and organizations got the job done.

“If we did not do that, the national survey would have only reported the number of horses in Texas and nothing else,” she said. “By getting the state breakout data from the full survey, the American Horse Council will provide statistics beneficial to the state. It will include direct, indirect and induced economic impacts of horse ownership, recreation and equine-related services, and that’s informational power.”

The information gained by the survey will influence decisions made in government about the horse industry, as well as what is being taught by academia and where efforts are focused by AgriLife Extension.

“The last time Texas received state breakout data from a survey this comprehensive was in 2007,” she said. “A lot has changed in the horse industry since then: the economic downturn in 2008, defunding of

“AgriLife Extension horse specialists play a vital role in equine education across the state of Texas, so it made the most sense for us to rally behind this survey,” Huseman said, encouraging horse owners, enthusiasts and horse industry suppliers to complete the survey, especially those in Texas.

“Horse people know the impact horses have on lives and the economy, but we need proof to influence those who don’t know.”

“Being Saved”

no greater blessing than being saved by of God. Salvation many blessings, including redemption, sanctification, justification, atonement, and reconciliaWhat a blessing to be saved!

“By Grace Through Faith”

The Scriptures teach clearly we are saved by grace and through faith, but they do not teach we are saved by grace alone through faith alone. Many people read one scripture but avoid other passages that are just as relevant.

Adults will have access to the Margarita Walk, which will include several varieties of margaritas throughout downtown, and visitors can vote on their favorites.

Those who operate food trucks, restaurants, bakeries or other businesses that sell churros can enter the competition as a professional, and there will also be a category for amateurs who do not sell churros.

Vendors can sign up to sell food or arts and crafts, and there are also vendor spaces available for services, organizations and others not falling into these categories.

“Within just the past five years, not only have there been major economic changes that have forced business closures and federal stimulus programs related to the pandemic made a major impact, but the horse industry has adapted to historic changes made to the tax code since 2017,” she said.

Huseman said no large group in Texas stepped forward to get the Texas survey data into the national survey, so she took on the project, rallying industry partners to get a complete survey funded. A collaborative effort

Those who would like to sign up as a vendor or churro competitor can visit www. hillsboromainstreet.org/churrofest and enter their information online.

Texas Society DAR awards grant through local Fort Graham Chapter

The Fort Graham Chapter, Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) was recently honored to award Rachel Mims, executive director of Veteran Art Therapy, a grant that was requested. It will be used to host art therapy events at various Texas locations at no cost to women veterans.

Funds will provide watercolor paints, brushes, art pads, tins, paper and other art supplies needed for mask making classes, watercolor painting classes, DIY journals, and other art projects which focus on self-expression and mindful stress relief.

Grant funding came from the Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution. For the past two years, Texas

Daughters and their chapters have been making donations in support of current State Regent Marcy Carter-Lovick and her State Regent’s Project, which focuses on making a difference in the lives of women veterans in Texas through grants to nonprofit organizations that provide services for this underserved population.

Estimates are that anywhere from 3,000 to 6,500 women veterans living in Texas are homeless. Upon leaving the military, women veterans, on average, make less than their male counterparts and are more likely to be under-employed. Each Texas chapter may sponsor one application from a qualifying nonprofit organization serving women

veterans in Texas.

Rachel Mims was the guest speaker at Fort Graham’s April chapter meeting. She is passionate about the services of counseling and art therapy that her organization provides veterans. Mims brought many of her own journals to show the chapter how much, or how little, individuals might include in their own journals.

Fort Graham DAR members say that they would love to talk to anyone interested in joining DAR. Contact Regent Susan Cook at ftgrahamdarre gent@gmail.com.

Any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible to join the DAR.

Attendees are asked to RSVP before Friday, May 19, by contacting the McLennan County Extension Office at 254-7575180 or emailing Candace Chapman, secretary for Dr. Shane McLellan, at candace. chapman@ag.tamu.edu.
