Mushrooms

Although not colorful, mushrooms offer healthy nutrients. One cup has about 15 calories, 2 grams of protein, B vitamins and fiber. Mushrooms are a good substitute for meat to achieve weight loss and heart health. They also boast important antioxidants that protect against cancer, and selenium which helps prevent inflammation. Unlike other produce, when placed in the sunlight, mushrooms make their own vitamin D!

$2.5 Million Gift for Wellness The Lake Health Foundation has received the single largest donation in its history,―$2.5 million― from the Brunner, Sanden and Deitrick families. In recognition of the landmark gift, Lake Health will rename its Mentor Wellness Campus in honor of these families who are lifelong residents of the area, owners of Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, and longtime donors.

Fitness Tip

Adopt the "3 Cs" when it comes to fitness: Commitment. Commit to your workouts two to three times per week. Schedule workouts like you would any other appointment.

Convenience. Make it convenient.

Decrease the number of steps between you and your workout.

Leave your workout bag in your car. Choose a fitness center that offers hours that work with your schedule.

Consistency. This is most important. No workout program will work if you don’t stick to the plan.

In Memoriam

Cynthia Moore-Hardy, FACHE, president and CEO of Lake Health, and Philip Brzozowski, MD, president of the medical staff, are saddened to announce the passing of obstetrician/ gynecologist Dr. James P. Guerrieri, a dedicated and compassionate physician, well respected by his peers and loved by his patients. Dr. Guerrieri had been a member of Lake Health’s medical staff since 1995. He brought many lives into this world and touched many more, from the patients he cared for to the physicians, nurses and team members with whom he worked. In 1996, he was named Physician of the Year.

Teacher’s lesson

A teacher gets straight A’s in lifestyle lessons.

ector Gonzalez, age 64 and retired from teaching Spanish at Mentor High School, considered himself relatively fit. But, while lifting weights one summer day in 2016, he passed out for a short time. His wife, Sandra, encouraged him to make an appointment with a cardiologist.

Hector’s care by cardiologist Paul Zellers, DO, showed normal EKG results, but his stress test showed some irregularities. With Hector’s family history of heart disease, Dr. Zellers recommended and performed a heart catheterization, which showed major blockages in three arteries. Hector needed triple bypass surgery.

On August 17, 2016, through the Cleveland Clinic Heart Surgery partnership with Lake Health, cardiothoracic surgeon Rami Akhrass, MD, successfully completed the open-heart bypass surgery at West Medical Center in Willoughby. Hector recovered well and participated in three months of cardiac rehab at West.

“The strong staff support and education made the difference in helping me change my lifestyle,” Hector says of the cardiac rehab program.

And change he did. In fact, Hector’s lifestyle changes earned him the American Heart Association’s local Lifestyle Change Award in February 2017.

What changed?

Although Hector had been exercising previously, together he and Sandra committed to stepping it up. His children and grandchildren gave him a Fitbit for Christmas, and he tracks 10,000 steps every day. Having joined the Mall Walkers partnership program offered by Lake Health and Great Lakes Mall, during inclement weather they walk at the mall.

The two also exercise at the Mentor Senior Center and keep each other motivated.

They began following the Mediterranean Diet, eating more fruits and vegetables, fewer carbs and less red meat. Hector often substitutes fish, chicken and beans for red meat.

As a result, Hector has lost weight and his blood pressure is good. He is feeling healthy and enjoying life. Was it hard to make changes to improve his lifestyle?

“Because Hector was relatively fit and healthy, his need for bypass surgery was surprising,” says Dr. Zellers. “I’m glad he came in right away. We looked at his risk factors and checked things out. “Not really,” says Hector. “I always tried to stay fit, but now I make a more conscientious effort.”

WATCHMAN:

AN ALTERNATIVE TO BLOOD THINNERS In May 2017, family medicine physician Daniel Hofius, DO, detected an erratic heart rhythm in his patient, former Willoughby Police and Fire Chief and retired Lake County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Bill Crosier.

Dr. Hofius sent Bill directly to cardiologist John Samsa, DO, who confirmed Bill’s diagnosis of atrial fibrillation. To reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke due to the irregular heart rhythm, Dr. Samsa prescribed a blood thinner. To treat the irregular heartbeat, a few weeks later, cardiac electrophysiologist Robert Goldstein, MD, shocked Bill’s heart to restore normal rhythm. The short procedure, known as cardioversion, took place in West Medical Center’s Electrophysiology Lab. Needing a protector Life went well until, in February 2018, Bill felt extreme fatigue and lightheaded dizziness. He called Dr. Hofius, who saw him immediately and sent him right to the ER at TriPoint Medical Center. Tests showed that Bill’s blood supply was half what it should have been. He was bleeding internally.

Hospitalized for one week, Bill received blood transfusions.

Tests checked for the source of internal bleeding and blood loss, but it remained a mystery. One thing was certain: The blood thinner was putting his life at risk.

Bill agreed to be the first candidate to receive the WATCHMAN implant at Lake Health. After weeks of tests and preparation, on June 11, 2018, the WATCHMAN physician team consisting of Drs. Goldstein, Zellers and Marwan Nasif successfully performed Lake Health’s first WATCHMAN implant.

Have you been thinking about choosing organic produce?

If you’re concerned about the cost, consider this: Organic fruits and vegetables may actually taste better and can have a higher nutritional value. Most important, they’ll be free of residues from chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.

But not all fruits and vegetables need to be organic. Each year the Environmental Working Group evaluates the amount of pesticide residue that remains on fruits and vegetables. They categorize them into the Dirty Dozen— those that have the highest amount of residue—and the

The lists can help you decide which produce to buy organic and conventional.

Many Clean 15 fruits and vegetables have a peel or covering that is removed before eating. Dirty Dozen produce tends to have a thin skin that we typically eat.

e understand that when you or a loved one is in the hospital, you need, more than ever, to feel a doctor’s comfort and compassion and know that he or she truly cares about you and your family. In years past, your primary care physician visited you in the hospital to supervise your care. But now when you are hospitalized, you may be under the care of a hospitalist.

Hospitalists are primary care physicians who specialize in the crucial care often required in a hospital setting.

They see patients only in the hospital, provide care 24/7 while you are admitted and work with your primary care physician to provide the best inpatient care and follow-up after discharge.

In April 2018, one of our excellent Lake Health hospitalists, Dr. George Trimble, received much deserved recognition

for the care he gave a terminally ill patient and her family. A note from the family expressed that Dr. Trimble demonstrated outstanding kindness, compassion and genuine concern that was exceptional. The note went on to state that Dr. Trimble “…made a difficult experience much easier for us.”

Exclusive breastfeeding for six months (giving no formula, juice or water) is the single most powerful and well-documented factor in reducing a baby’s risk of common illnesses, such as diarrhea, ear and respiratory tract infections. Breastfeeding is a key factor in reducing infant deaths. Exclusive breastfeeding for longer than six months reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by 64 percent. Any breastfeeding for two to four months reduces the risk of SIDS by 40 percent. Mothers who breastfeed exclusively for six months have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and breast and ovarian cancers.

What’s more, research shows that breast milk does far more over the baby’s entire lifetime. Beyond nutrients, there are hundreds of components specific to human milk that cannot be duplicated in formula.

management and education. Our support services help get breastfeeding off to a good start, promote adequate milk supply and promote the longevity of breastfeeding, which supports lifelong health.

In the hospital our lactation consultants visit, educate and help each new mother who wants to give her milk to her infant. We also provide support after discharge through a follow-up phone call, a breastfeeding helpline and weekly support groups for moms.

You should know: The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. They recommend continuing to breastfeed while adding complementary foods for a year or more.

SPORTS AND PERFORMANCE:

GIVE MORE, GET MORE

Looking to improve your strength, endurance or athleticism?

Do you have specific strength, endurance and athletic fitness goals? Perhaps you’re an athlete looking to improve your performance or you’re training for a specific athletic event. Or maybe you’re a service professional, such as a police officer, fire fighter or EMS professional, or an active reservist or getting ready to join the military or ROTC. The Sports and Performance program offered by the Lake Health Sports Medicine department could be just what you’re looking for.

Sports and Performance is geared to meet individual needs and goals. Each participant receives an evaluation and works with an athletic trainer. The athletic trainer tailors your course to meet your goals. Services can consist of one-on-one or group programming. The course length depends on you and your goals.

“We create specialized programming to meet your needs, discovered through the initial evaluation and the rigors of your event, job or performance,” says Sports Medicine director John Smith, AT.

All programs consist of but aren’t limited to weight training, cardio training to improve endurance, and instruction on proper body mechanics. The program also offers VO2 max testing to help determine cardiovascular fitness level.

Success

Members of the Lakeland Community College Police Department were the first participants in the program.

After 12 weeks, participants experienced a 20 percent increase in strength and power, a 15 percent increase in cardiovascular fitness (per direct VO2 max testing) and an average body fat loss of 8 percent. The Sports and Performance staff currently is working with local fire departments, dance schools and theater production troupes to finalize programming to meet their needs.

“The Sports and Performance program was challenging and high energy, with positive results. Kat and Tyler custom-tailored the workouts, keeping them fresh and non-conventional,” says Lt. Steve Gagliardi of the Lakeland Community College Police Department. “I would definitely recommend this program to anyone looking to improve.”

rightly colored “game rugs,” a video flatscreen, a child’s table and chairs, take-home activities and a tech charger: all are available to families at Kyla’s Play Place. Located in the waiting area at Perrico Health Campus, it is a memorial to Kyla Jane Baum, who at age 13 succumbed to complications from leukemia treatment. The children’s area is a small tribute to the energetic, loving, gifted girl who wanted to make others happy.

Kyla’s parents, Lake Health internist Dr. Stephen Baum and Lake Health Foundation board member Robin Baum, wanted Kyla’s life to be a

legacy for other children. Along with generous gifts from friends and the community, they originally funded two “Kyla’s Karts,” offering art supplies, books and videos to entertain children in family waiting areas at Lake Health’s Mentor Campus. With excess funds, they established the Kyla Baum Memorial Fund through the Foundation. The opening of Perrico Health Campus in 2017 presented an opportunity for the Baums to make life a little easier for waiting families in that facility as well.

“Since 1994, we have received an amazing amount of support and love, and we want those who have given

to Kyla’s memorial fund to know they are appreciated,” says Robin. “Their generosity is still making a difference in patients’ lives.”

“Lake Health Foundation is an excellent steward of funds, and we believe in what the Foundation does to enhance local health care,” confirms Dr. Baum. “We know the funds are well managed and are applied to worthy projects and causes.”

Thanks to a young girl’s short but joyful life, her family, friends, Lake Health Foundation and the community, Kyla’s legacy continues to help children smile.
