n January 31, 2016, Tim O’Hair, just 49, was watching TV with his wife, Kim, and 10-yearold daughter when, suddenly, he slumped into unconsciousness. Alarmed, Kim dialed 9-1-1.

The dispatcher quickly assessed Tim’s condition of cardiac arrest and talked Kim through CPR as EMS sped their way. In the ER at West Medical Center, tests confirmed Tim’s “Code STEMI” (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction), an extremely serious heart attack known as a widowmaker.

Still unconscious, he was whisked upstairs to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab where cardiologist Raj Vallabhaneni, MD, performed angioplasty and stenting, opening Tim’s blocked artery.

To improve recovery, Tim received intentional hypothermic treatment (temporarily lowering his body temperature to reduce stress on his heart) and was later moved to Critical Care. He finally regained consciousness on February 11.

Cardiac rehabilitation Right away, cardiac rehab nurse Rebecca Schwartz, RN, began Tim’s inpatient rehabilitation, providing basic education and support and initiating low-level exercise.

Tim and his family received education about his heart condition, learning how lifestyle and risk factors affected his health and the next steps to reduce his risk.

Medications were already working to control Tim’s high blood pressure and cholesterol when he went home on February 14, after two full weeks in the hospital.

Then, just six weeks after his heart attack, Tim began outpatient cardiac rehab at West Medical Center. Cardiac rehab is a thorough education and exercise program to help encourage lifestyle changes and develop hearthealthy habits. Education topics include nutrition, exercise, stress management, smoking cessation, coronary artery disease and weight management.

During the eight-week rehab program, registered nurses and exercise physiologists assessed Tim’s cardiac risk factors and monitored his personalized exercise program.

A registered dietitian helped Tim identify heart-healthy foods. Ongoing education and counseling encouraged Tim and his family to progress into a new, healthier lifestyle.

Award-winning success Tim’s rehab goals were to lose weight, increase strength and endurance, decrease fatigue and get back to work.

“Success came through listening to the rehab staff and doing what they said,” Tim says. “I had to take their advice and follow through.”

By the end of rehab, Tim’s endurance had increased 55 percent, which meant he could sustain activity at a much higher level without stressing his heart. With 40 percent as the normal benchmark for improved endurance, Tim’s success was so noteworthy that the cardiac rehab team nominated him for the American Heart Association’s Lifestyle Change Award. The award recognizes people who have made a positive change to improve their quality of life and health or have influenced those around them to do so.

On June 4, just four months after his cardiac arrest, Tim received the award at the Lake & Geauga Counties Heart Walk. The presentation recognized Tim and his family for their lifestyle changes.

Today, Tim eats more fish, more healthy fats and less red meat. He has cut back on sweets, desserts and eating out. He exercises every day and looks forward to lots of tomorrows.

A new artificial cervical disc replacement relieves pain and numbness and maintains natural movement of the neck.

Neck Pain? Gone.

Following an injury in winter 2015, TriPoint Emergency Department nurse manager Marlo Rebera, RN, experienced increasing neck pain. By June 2016, constant pain in her neck and left shoulder, numbness in her left thumb and fingers and decreased range of motion in her neck were making life miserable. Weeks of physical therapy, traction and over-the-counter pain relievers didn’t help.

X-rays, an MRI and CT scans showed that her problems were due to bone spurs, arthritis and a herniated (ruptured and bulging) disc in her neck that was pressing on her spinal cord. Spine surgeon Michael Eppig, MD, told Marlo she was the perfect candidate for a new cervical (neck) disc replacement procedure. The procedure involves replacing an unhealthy disc with an artificial disc to relieve pressure on surrounding nerves and

maintain natural mobility of the spine. He explained that this new disc replacement is designed to treat each of her three conditions: herniation, degeneration and bone spurs.

This unique artificial disc has two metal plates designed to slide and rotate over a plastic insert. It has several advantages over spinal fusion, the traditional treatment for Marlo’s conditions. First, there is immediate pain relief after surgery. Second, the procedure offers a quicker recovery. Third, unlike spinal fusion, in which two or more vertebrae are permanently joined together to stabilize the spine and relieve pain and pressure on nerves, this disc design allows natural neck movement at each vertebra. And fourth, because spinal fusion results in areas that no longer move, it can accelerate

the natural wear and tear on discs above and below the fusion, increasing the potential for future problems. However, this new disc allows movement, resulting in less stress on adjacent discs and reduced potential for future problems.

On August 1, 2016, at TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township, Dr. Eppig performed Marlo’s cervical disc replacement.

During surgery, while Marlo was under general anesthesia, Dr. Eppig made a small incision in the front of her neck. Through the opening, he removed the affected disc and replaced it with the artificial disc.

When Marlo woke from surgery, she had no more pain, and the numbness in her fingers was gone. After an overnight stay in the hospital, Marlo went home with a soft neck brace to wear for the first week, “just to keep her from doing too much too soon,” explains Dr. Eppig. A few days later, the numbness in her thumb was gone. Marlo returned to work on August 15.

“This procedure is a game changer,” says Dr. Eppig. “The product design enables the natural movement of the cervical spine and is designed to last a lifetime.”

“It’s such a relief to be without the pain and disability I had,” Marlo says. “Honestly, Dr. Eppig is a nice person and a great surgeon.

Well Underway: Lake Health’s Mentor Wellness Campus

We’re adding a medically-based fitness center to your health care options!

Lake Health knows that by combining fitness, healthy support and preventive care, you can move toward that healthier, happier life you’re looking for. That’s why we’re excited about the Mentor Wellness Campus, under construction at the corner of Market Street and Munson Road and scheduled to open in early 2018.

It’s a fresh health and wellness philosophy and experience. The facility will include a membershipbased fitness center with pools and a spa, plus health care services to diagnose, treat and prevent health problems, all in one location. You’ll find family fitness and fun, support for recovery from illness or injury,

and targeted health and exercise essentials to treat risk factors and chronic health problems such as arthritis and heart disease.

Traditional medical services at the campus will include physician offices, an urgent care, occupational health services, diagnostic imaging and lab services. Rehabilitation services will include physical therapy, sports medicine, aquatics and work-related therapy.

The medical fitness difference The membership-based fitness center will merge traditional fitness with medically supervised activities and wellness services, all aimed at improving overall health. Members

will find flexible hours; state-ofthe-art exercise equipment; an indoor track, rock climbing wall and basketball court; three pools, including a therapeutic whirlpool, a recreation/ leisure pool and a lap pool; group exercise studios; locker rooms, shower rooms, sauna and steam rooms and a family changing area; as well as conference and meeting rooms.

But medical expertise from a friendly staff will make the difference. Athletic trainers, exercise physiologists, strength and conditioning specialists, health and wellness coaches, licensed dietitians, licensed massage therapists and other health professionals will be available. They’ll offer medicallybased fitness assessments and exercise prescriptions, supervised exercise and conditioning, weight and nutrition assessments and counseling, wellness coaching, behavior modification, stress management, massage, classes, clinics, lectures and more. Lake Health offers music therapy, Reiki and massage therapy to inpatients, free of charge. Patients can arrange for these therapies through their nurse as available. Services are scheduled on a first-come, firstserved basis, although service hours are limited and not all therapies are available every day or on all units.

Wellness Institute services

The Wellness Institute offers outpatient appointments for acupuncture, massage therapy, reflexology, Reiki, nutrition counseling and wellness coaching and has a wide variety of wellness products for sale. Practitioners offering integrative medicine Joe Kessler, MD, a board-certified family physician and medical acupuncturist, integrates Western and Eastern medical practices. Glitz 2016: A Masterpiece in Medicine

The Cleveland Museum of Art was the spectacular venue for the 27th annual Lake Health Foundation fundraising gala. Glitz 2016: A Masterpiece in Medicine, held on Saturday, October 1, provided its 600-plus guests a night they won’t soon forget.

Thanks to the generosity of community members and businesses, charitable support for Glitz 2016 surpassed $467,000, making this the most successful Glitz by far! Proceeds will benefit the Emergency Medicine Fund and the Wellness Walk Fund.

The Emergency Medicine Fund provides life-saving equipment to first responders in Lake County, while the Wellness Walk Fund offers our community, staff and patients the chance to jog, walk or stroll a one-mile loop through the natural setting on the campus of TriPoint Medical Center.

In addition, over $41,000 was raised to benefit Lake Health’s Community Care Fund during the Fund-A-Need portion of the event.

These funds will help with medical bills for patients who are making an honest effort to pay their balance despite the hardship it causes their families.

Special thanks go to the evening’s celebrity emcee Stefani Schaefer of Fox 8 News in the Morning, to Classic Lexus for their donation of a two-year Lexus lease and to the Lake Health Medical Staff who donated $50,000 toward the purchase of a new electronic medical record system.
