Dominick Yates is a Spring 2013 initiate of the Upsilon of Kappa Alpha Psi, I had the honor and privilege of being the co-chair of the MTA committee along with Elder Watson Diggs awardee and current Grand Keeper of Exchequer Rhen Bass. Dominick graduated from Cal State Northridge and has continued working in the fnancial services space. He is the current Advisor to the Upsilon chapter. I asked him to answer fve questions.
What is the diference of your perspective of the Bond now as opposed to being an undergrad?
- My appreciation for the bond has grown since joining as an undergrad in 2013. Throughout my experience, Kappa has been there to celebrate my victories and more importantly has shown up for me in times of need. I moved to LA by myself, and have never felt like I don't have family around me Brothers have helped me grow more mature and an active role in seeing me become successful. I thank the bond enough for being a pivotal part of development.
What has been a surprise that you didn't anticipa being a Nupe?
Networking. I was introduced to Kappa through v brothers handle business on and outside of camp what inspired me to even look into joining. I've be meet people from all walks of life, and have neve issues when needing to be connected with some bond. I've never had a formal job interview, every had came through the network I built in the bond into my career as a Financial Advisor and can tha introducing me to my business partners along wi my clients being in the bond.
What made you want to be an advisor and how has your undergrad experience infuenced you in that role?
- I was brought into the Bond with Brother Rhen Bass as my chapter advisor. I tend to think we were given a HUGE leg up in life (and the fraternity) because of this. Brother Bass taught us what it means to be a respected brother of the fraternity and inspired us to achieve our potential. I also feel like I had an undergraduate experience that is unmatched, becoming a Chapter Advisor is one way I can give back, and teach the next generation much of the lessons I learned. Mentorship and participating in success is something that matters to me.
How can we get more recently graduated brothers engaged and taking leadership roles in LA Alumni?
- We should be making the transition as seamless as possible. One of the biggest hurdles for recent graduates is Finances. I believe in leveraging nepotism within the bond to kick-start the careers for recent grads. If we make joining Alumni cheap along with fguring out a way to hook young brothers up with careers, we will without a doubt see more participation on the alumni level. When I talk to graduates, myself included, we are putting a lot of efort into getting a start in life, in business, in family, etc. and a lot of people feel discouraged to attend meetings/events because they are stressed over fnances. My biggest goal is to put money into the pockets of younger brothers, while also leveraging the bond and my expertise to make my money through helping others.
The Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. softball team came through and noble fashion and won the frat games championship for the second year in a row and for the 3rd time out of four years. LA Alumni brothers, Frank Matthews and Curtis Hadley played huge roles in the success of the team and enjoyed raising the trophy into the air after the team vanquished the Ques for the chip
