PROVINCE

One of the original provinces established in 1925, the Western Province of Kappa Alpha Psi includes members in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Japan and South Korea.

Our history tells us that as Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity moved westward, many undergraduate chapters were chartered in states west of Mississippi River. On April 25, 1923 the fraternity chartered the Upsilon chapter on the campus of the University of California Los Angeles, the first chapter of the current Western Province. From 1923 to 1938, brothers who attended UCLA and remained in Los Angeles meet regularly and established the Los Angeles Alumni, chartered on August 8, 1938. The Los Angeles Alumni chapter continued to induct brothers through the Upsilon Chapter at both Undergraduate and Alumni levels. May 24, 1947, the fraternity chartered Berkeley Alumni, at the home of our late Brother DeWitt Buckingham by Brother Frank LaVigne, Polemarch of the Western Province at the time.

The Provinces were formally called Regions/Districts. The fraternity held its 15th Grand Chapter Meeting December 26th thru 30th, 1925 in New York City. Grand Polemarch Earl B. Dickerson and the members assembled changed the designation of Regional Director to Province Polemarch. The first Polemarch of the Western Region/District--Judge Carl R. Johnson of Kansas City Missouri, and member of the Kansas City Alumni--served from 1925 until 1931. The second Province Polemarch was J.S. Hunnicut from Topeka, Kansas Alumni; he served from 1931-1932.

During those early years of the fraternity's history, the Western Region/District extended no further west than the states of Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska except for the Upsilon Chapter at University of California Los Angeles. As chapters were established westward the Western Region/District expanded thus laid the foundation for the chapters which today make up the Western Province.

Iamhonoredandhumbled,toaddressyouasthe25thProvincePolemarchoftheGreat WesternProvinceofKappaAlphaPsiFraternity,Inc.IwanttothankBrotherGrand PolemarchMcMikle,forentrustingmewiththisincredibleresponsibilityandIgreatly appreciatethemanycalls,texts,socialmediapostsandbrotherlysupportIhave receivedsincetheannouncementofmyappointmentwasmade.Asweembarkonthis newjourneytogether,Iamflledwithasenseofgratitudeandappreciationforthe legacyofleadershipestablishedbyallofourpastProvincePolemarchsandother leaderswhohaveshapedourProvinceovertheyears.Inparticular,Iwouldliketo expresssincereappreciationtoour24thWesternProvincePolemarch,BrotherTim Woods,forhisservicefromOctober1,2019toSeptember30,2024.BrotherWoodsled usthroughthechallengesoftheCOVID-19pandemicwithgritandresilience,andfor that,wearetrulygratefulBrotherWoodshasservedourProvinceforyearsandIthank himforhisservice.

Aswelooktothefuture,ImusttakeamomenttoacknowledgethepassingofBrother Dr.BorisRicks,astalwartinourprovinceandamentortomany,includingmyselfsince myundergraduatedaysintheFraternity.BrotherDr.Ricks'impactonourBrotherhood wasprofound,andhismemorywillforeverbecherishedinourhearts.Inhishonor,the WesternProvincewillcommemoratehislegacy,ensuringthathisspiritlivesonthrough ouractionsandourdeeds.LetushonorhisfdelitytotheBondbyembodyinghis brotherlycharacterandextendingittoallbrothers.

TodaymarksthebeginningofanewchapterofleadershipforourProvince,andIwill soonannounceallappointmentsinaseparatecorrespondenceandinourupcoming OctoberissueofthePacifcReporter.Inthecomingdaysandweeks,Iwillrolloutmy visiontothemembership,whichincludesafocusonourmentalandphysicalhealth, investinginandhonoringcivilityandbrotherhoodamongus,andfortifyingoperational excellence.WewillconnectourworkasaProvincetoGrandChapterinitiativesand ensurethatourcommunitiesareengagedinthisupcomingelection.Wewillconducta province-widesurvey,aswellaslisteningtours/townhallsthroughouttheProvinceto obtainbrothers’feedback,beginninginFresno,CAlaterthismonth,SouthernCalifornia andthePacifcNorthwestinNovemberandtheSouthwestbeforetheendofDecember WewillencouragecollaborationbetweenchaptersandProvinceleadership,and leveragetechnologywherewecan,toensuremeaningfulengagementwithallofour Brothers,includingthoseinJapan,SouthKorea,andHawaiiWewillinspirebrothersto comehometoKappahereintheWesternProvince.

IamlookingforwardtohostingourC.RodgerWilsonLeadership ConferenceinInglewood,CAonNovember9th,whereseveralGrand Chapteroffcerswillbepresent.Theplanningcommitteehasbeen diligentlyworkingoncuratinganenrichingexperienceforus.Additionally, wearehighlyanticipatingour78thWesternProvinceCouncilMeeting, whichwillbehostedbytheEpsilonKappaandLongBeachInglewood-SouthBayAlumniChaptersfromMarch12-March162025. Moreover,Iamecstaticthatthe87thGrandChapterMeeting,hostedbythe GammaIotaandthePhoenixAlumniChapters,willbethefrstGrand ChapterMeetinghostedbyourProvincesince1989.Wewantallbrothers ofourProvincepresentandregisteredforallProvinceeventsandcertainly registeredinrecordnumbersinPhoenix,ArizonafromJuly1-6,2025.

Dignitaries, Special Guest and Speakers Protocol

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity believes in the concepts of protocol, etiquette, and decorum. The fraternity has a Protocol & Etiquette Manual that outlines the fraternity’s ideologies, norms, and consistent procedures of tradition and conduct, uniquely analogous to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. Through fraternalism, brotherhood, fellowship, and friendship, there is a sincere appreciation for giving respect and to engage in positive and productive interaction. When inviting and hosting fraternity dignitaries and special guests, some general items should be followed and adhered to in an e ective, e cient, consistent and proﬁcient manner.

Invitations and follow-up communications:

• The ﬁrst contact may be made in person, by phone, or chapter letterhead. The International Headquarters’ Executive Director must also be notiﬁed of the request

It is necessary for a chapter or province to furnish the following items (in writing) to the special guest or guest speaker in a timely and professional manner:

• Conﬁrm the date, hour, place and type of program, activity, or event.

• Provide the ﬁnalized hotel reservations

• Supply the name of the main host escort, or contact person in the local area (include cell number and email address)

• Make transportation arrangements for the guest, while he is visiting the city."

• Notify guest of the type of clothing (causal and fraternitybased) beﬁtting the formality of the a air, as well as information on the seasonal climate and weather conditions.

• Share detailed logistics about the program, activity, or event

• Request a general speech subject and/or type of remarks desired

• Inform of the time expected to speak (length of speech and the approximate size of the audience

• As appropriate, present the names of other key individuals (brothers and the external public) who will be participating in the program

• Promptly handle honorarium arrangements and process any reimbursement expenses.

The sponsoring chapter or province should arrange for receiving the following from the special guest:

• Biographical information for publicity purposes and for preparation of introducing the speaker.

• Photo for publicity (various media formats)

• Airplane or Automobile transportation information (and speak with IHQ regarding travel schedule logistics) Protocol and Courtesies Extended to Dignitaries:

• Recognize and respect the position holder.

• The Grand Polemarch is the highest ranking o cial in the fraternity, and he should be accorded all courtesies, amenities and deference in honor of his position title.

• Provide a detailed itinerary associated with the visit

• The IHQ Executive Director, Chapter Polemarch and Province Polemarch should be made aware of all arrangements.

Courtesies that must be extended to the invitee, such as (Grand Polemarch, Past Grand Polemarchs, Grand Chapter O cers, Province Polemarchs and Guest Speaker):

• All brothers and guests should rise upon the initial entrance into the facility.

• Appropriate representatives should meet the invited dignitary upon arrival, and transportation should be always provided.

• If the invited dignitary's wife is with him, she should be presented with a corsage or a bouquet of ﬂowers (example: Roses) The local Silhouettes should be involved in hosting her stay

• A personal escort should be provided to and from all functions.

• Comfortable lodging in a major hotel chain that can provide suitable housing, meeting, and entertainment space

• Refreshments (fruit, juices, water, and other light snacks) should be provided.

• Hotel management should be informed of the invited dignitary's visit to ensure that appropriate amenities can be o ered or received while residing in the hotel facility.

• Various forms of presentations i.e. (resolutions, proclamations , etc ) from local and state government o cial(s) and related entities should be received

• Articles should be placed in the print media and other acceptable and appropriate forms of public communications to ensure that he is given visibility at all times

• If there is a reception, there should be a receiving line to
