FreedomRiderswerecivilrightsactivists who rode interstate buses into the segregatedSouthernUnitedStatesfrom 1961 - 1964 to challenge the non-enforcement of the United States Supreme Court decisions Morgan v. Virginia (1946) and Boynton v. Virginia (1960), which ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional. The FreedomRiderschallengedthisbyriding interstate buses in the South in mixed racialgroupstochallengelocallaws. The violentreactionstheyprovokedbolstered thecredibilityoftheAmericanCivilRights Movement and called national attention to the disregard for federal law and the local violence used to enforce segregationinthesouthernUnitedStates.
BrotherJamesStewart,a1961initiateofthe BetaGammaofKappaAlphaPsiatDillard UniversityinNewOrleansandaLAAlumni chapter member participated in these history-changing freedom rides I had the honor and privilege of talking to Brother Stewartaboutthehistoricsummerof1964 athishouseinSouthLAbeforehepassed several years ago. Brother Stewart, who alsosaidhewasonAvalonBoulevardwhen the Watts Riots started in 1965, began his freedom ride on the UCLA campus in Westwood where a group of brave UCLA studentswereheadingsouthtoassistinthe protests. Brother Stewart, who grew up in Louisiana, knew frst-hand that the group washeadingintothe“dangerousunknown” and tried to convey to the others, Blacks

from the North, and especially the Whites fromtheWest, thattheyhadnoconceptof thehateandfeartheywereabouttoface Brother Stewart said that at the beginning ofthebusridetheysangsongsinitiallybut the second half of the trip was very quiet andhecouldfeelthefearintheothersas they got close to Mississippi. When they arrived he said instead of fre hoses and dogs like the previous freedom riders had faced in 1963, the Mississippi authorities hadarrangedforthemtobearrestedright away and avoid the big headlines that violently confronting them would have created. They got of one bus and onto a prisonbusthattookthemtotheinfamous Parchman

Even though they didn’t get the headlines that they had hoped to expose further what was going on in Mississippi, Brother Stewart, and the other Freedom Ridersareconsideredheroesforfacingthe racist regime as young people and enduringasummerinprisoninthenameof freedom.
