A Tribute to Women

Empowerment When I was a little girl, I often heard our relatives calling me a ‘bride’, my appearance, and showering me with Barbie’s collection! On such made two unbreakable promises to myself. “I shall live a life that feels right own terms,” and “Impossible and I Can’t shall not exist in my vocabulary.” It goes without saying that societal stereotypes play a significant role in the and resultant dilemma. Fortunately though, the positive female energy is not something that makes me proud day by day.

complimenting occasions, I to me and on my whole marriage pressure as subservient as before…

There are countless fundamental life moves that should be accomplished before you walk down the aisle and commit yourself to a stranger… ehm, I mean the love of your life. One inevitable question to ask is, have I discovered my mission on Earth yet? As Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” This is an awakening call for mankind; to find the essence of what we really are through helping and serving others. Not only that but also, did I dedicate enough time to discern myself, accomplish my ambitions, and even love this poor self ? During the journey of self-discovery, it will be very likely to face some hurdles. In such cases, it is vital to be reminded that merely our positive attitude and motivation will lead us to self-fulfillment. Last but not least, if you concretely discover both your utter mission and self, you will come to realize that both love and independence together provide a profound meaning to life! If you think that your independence will sabotage your marriage or vice versa, then allow me to shatter your delusions. You haven’t met Mr. Right yet! Because, you were born to be someone extraordinary throughout the ten decades of your life, and not merely a ‘bride’, a ‘wife’, and a ‘mother’ as the community is trying to shape us. I am thankful that I never fantasized about marriage; instead, I fantasized about how great I can be!

Once Upon a Time… Pronovias’ 2016 Collection The Spirit of Couture Has Inspired The Pronovias 2016 Collection. Materials have been reinterpreted to give life to the movement of pieces, creating a fluid and sophisticated silhouette that celebrates the beauty of the bride. The collection recovers classic fabrics from bridal tradition and renews them with a new concept of volume, which is both generous and very light. Transparencies have evolved with the application of nude color, creating seductive optical effects together with the complicity of lace and crystal tulle, which have been included in the collection for the first time ever. Lace shows its richness in designs and combinations with guipure and chantilly, creating delicate textures. The placement of this material is another style key for 2016, applied as if in brush strokes on our creations to define the personality of our designs. Mikado silks have been tailored as gauze to obtain more movement, while organza has been reinterpreted with classic patterns to focus on volume. Crêpe, softer and with more body, skims the figure two-piece effect dresses. As for silhouettes, the iconic mermaid dress evolves into a new version with pure lines and subtle volumes with a broader train. The separate formula, created so that every bride can make her own gown, presents a broad selection of silk and hemstitching blouses that combine with mikado silk and fantasy tulle skirts.

Atelier Pronovias 2016 Collection The Atelier Pronovias 2016 collection is born from a dialogue with the mannequin. A meticulous process in which the dress is the creative space where imagination and couture savoir faire go hand in hand. Long sessions at the atelier shape a collection where our creations leave the realm of imagination and propose an aesthetic that inspires pure lines, volumes, and details. Dresses with plunging fronts and backs, that fade into the body thanks to a sophisticated layering design in which nude color crystal tulle fabrics come together to create an evocative second-skin effect. Silhouettes become fluid and have movement that is faithful to the collection’s spirit. An aesthetic exercise in which noble materials of bridal tradition such as crêpe, organza, cotton piqué, mikado silk and silk organza show their true splendor and the richness of their nuances. Without forgetting lace, the trademark of the company and the star of this collection’s proposal, which also includes priced chantilly lace as an alternative to crystal tulle. The collection is completed by tiaras and jeweled headdresses made up by over 300 hand-crafted pieces on aged silver decorated with nature-inspired motifs such as flowers, birds, and butterflies. Our attention to detail and finishings are essential in our collection, which highlight the luxurious and sempiternal essence of couture.

Home How to Incorporate Floral Patterns into Your Home

old floral patterns have been trending drastically during the past couple of years, as they make a beautiful addition in almost every aspect. Decorating with floral prints allows you to create harmony and balance, turning it into a room that is full of energy and life. Floral prints can seem intimidating at first, but with good knowledge, you can give your room a modern appeal, elegant charm, or a romantic feel. Below, we have a few examples to include a floral touch in your home.

Furniture: Classic floral patterns are suitable for those who love womanly, delicate flowery shades and the vintage setting that they evoke. A room that is adorned with this concept, mixing between pastel palette of colors including mint, violet, pink, and white, and plain classic corner table and carpet, conjures a fairy-tale magnificence. Lampshades, vases, quilts, plates, and decorative items are other alternatives that ensemble both genders.

Wallpaper: If you are fond of bold, energetic patterns, don’t think twice of spreading wallpaper with oversized floral patterns. Modern floral patterns look beautiful even if they dominate the room, and you can choose a design that either adds warmth and cheer, or strong vibe and quirky personality.

52 | October 2015

Bedroom Floral: When it comes to decorations, there are many ways to add a floral touch into your bedroom. You might hang a floral wallpaper, adorn the bed with floral lampshades, incorporate floral patterns into your pillows and duvet, and even ornament the small empty spaces with minimalist, chic vases and home accessories.

Accents: If you are still hesitant about bringing in wild floral patterns, scatter some small floral items like pillows and accessories. This is an easy way to bring color to your space and create a floral environment that is quite overwhelming. Autumnal and colorful tones all work well in an entryway, where the entrances are spacious and bright. You can mix and match with similar color accents to complement the bold and bright patterns and add a cheerful ambiance.

4 Interesting Tricks You Should Know: 1. To pair prints, use a matching background color and select one large pattern and two small delicate patterns. 2. To create a more male-friendly environment, use large patterns and primary colors. 3. You can use more than one floral pattern in the same room but with common palette. 4. To generate a vintage feel, mix a large print on something small with a pillow with mini version of the same pattern.

O October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign that is marked in all countries across the world, to upsurge awareness of the early signs, symptoms, and treatments of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is by far the most common type of cancer within women, with a yearly increase of 1.38 million new cases worldwide, according to IARC GlobalCan, 2008. The phenomenon has been uprising steadily in the past few decades among the developing countries, due to a number of turbulent factors that include adoption of western lifestyles, poor health infrastructure, and lack of awareness. The IARC GlobalCan revealed around 108,600 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Egypt in 2012, where only 25% were able to battle the incidence. For this reason, Ladybird is providing a comprehensive overview guide to help you find all information you may need. 56 | October 2015

Breast Cancer: A Tribute to All Strong Women

What is breast cancer? Breast cancer is a malevolent tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. It is frequently found in women, yet men can get breast cancer as well. A woman’s breast is composed of glands (lobules) that can make breast milk, small tubes (ducts) that carry milk from the lobules to the nipples, and fatty, connective tissue, blood vessels, and lymph vessels. Cancer can start in any part of the three areas; however, it mostly starts in the cells that line the ducts. The lymph system is one of the main ways breast cancer spreads. Lymph nodes are small, beanshaped tissues that are connected by vessels and carry a clear fluid called lymph instead of blood. They are present under the arm, around the collar bone, and inside the chest near the breast bone. Breast cancer cells travel in lymphatic vessels and grow in lymph nodes, which consequently spreads to other places in the body.

What are the types of breast cancer? Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) They are abnormal cells that start in the cells lining the ducts without developing through the walls of the ducts into the tissue of the breast. Because the cells haven’t invaded, they cannot spread to lymph nodes or other organs. However, DCIS may become an invasive cancer, that’s why it is sometimes called precancer.

Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) This is the most mutual type of breast cancer. It begins in the cells lining a duct, and then the abnormal cells break through the wall of the duct, invading the tissue of the breast and spreading to nearby lymph nodes.

Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) This cancer starts in the cells lining the milk glands (lobules). The cells grow through the wall of the lobules and then can disperse to nearby lymph nodes or other parts of the body.

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) This is a rare type of invasive breast cancer. Often, there is no single lump or tumor; however, IBC makes the skin of the breast look red and feel warm. It may also make the skin look bumpy like an orange peel. The breast may get bigger, hard, tender, or itchy.

Can breast cancer be prevented? According to the WHO, at least one-third of all cancer cases are preventable. There are definite habits that increase the risk of developing breast cancer among women, such as tobacco smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, alcohol use, environmental pollution, infections, long exposure of ultraviolet radiation, and occupational carcinogens. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer, it is recommended to visit a doctor and do genetics testing for mutation in genes that trigger the risk of breast cancer.

What are the common signs and symptoms? It goes without saying that early detection of cancer drastically increases the chances of successful treatment. There are two ways to do an early detection of cancer; screening and education. Screening is done through tests to detect a disease like cancer in people who do not have symptoms. The goal of this method is to know about the disease at an early stage, before

they start to cause symptoms. The mammogram is the main test to help you find breast cancer early. Education about the possible signs and symptoms of cancer is fundamental, as its occurrence require prompt action before it is too late. Some early signs of breast cancer include lumps, sores that fail to heal, abnormal bleeding, skin irritation, nipple pain, nipple discharge other than breast milk, thickening of the nipple, persistent indigestion, and chronic hoarseness. Sometimes breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes under the arm, causing swelling in this area. While the above indications do not particularly suggest breast cancer, it is imperative to have them checked out by a specialized doctor.

How to treat breast cancer? To cure cancer, the patient must select an effective treatment program that is provided in a sustained and reasonable way, related to early detection, and adhere to evidencebased standards of care and multidisciplinary approach. The first critical step is the diagnosis, which determines the spread of tumor. Based on the degree of spread of tumor, an adequate treatment will be selected. Among the treatment modalities are surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and systemic therapy. The first three methods are solely used when the tumor is present in small size. After your treatment is over, ongoing follow-up is very crucial. It is also important to keep health insurance, in case it comes back. Most importantly, no matter how hard things may get, learn to accept things that are beyond your ability, embrace them, and live your life to the fullest. October 2015 | 57

1. Act like a child to escape monotony. Attend an acting class, learn Arabic calligraphy, or even go on an afternoon ride with friends. 2. Dedicate half an hour a day for meditation. It will help you embrace the moment, drift away stress, and appreciate your life more. 3. Work out those lazy muscles, as it will trigger endorphins that have an insightful effect on lifting your spirits. 4. Indulge in a cheat meal every week to relish the foods you admire and please your senses. Even celebrities opt for what they like from time to time. 5. Sing out loud even if you are a terrible singer. Whether you are planning to sing under the shower or on a karaoke night, make sure you unleash your emotions. 6. Escape into another world and explore new characters, emotions, and places through a book. Reading books is a necessity, not a luxury. 7. Get out of town, even if you would end up visiting a new country solely. Some journeys help us explore ourselves and abilities more. 8. Set some goals, enthuse yourself to attain them, and keep them in your journal. It will give you a boost of positivity and self-esteem.

LADYBIRD’S You Ask, Experts Answer! 1

Dr. Steven Charlap

Holistic Medicine

What vitamins should a woman in her 50s take? Doctor’s Answer:

Most of the recent studies fail to support taking a multivitamin unless you have known deficiencies, which are fairly uncommon. If you are vegan or having bowel problems, you may need vitamin B12. If you don’t ever go into sun, you may need vitamin D. Check with doctor if you need. Otherwise, you are wasting your money. If you feel okay, you probably are okay.

Dr. Paul Grin

Pain Management

What causes light sensitivity? Doctor’s Answer:

The transmission of pain impulses from activated peripheral sensory nerves to second-order neurons in trigeminal brain stem nuclei and upper cervical cord may cause sensitization of second-order neurons. Not only can this intensify the pain, it may also increase sensitivity to convergent sensory stimuli such as light (photophobia). See your primary doctor for evaluation.

Dr. Janiece Stewart Sports Medicine

Which is worse: an ankle sprain, tendon tear, or ligament tear? I haven’t been able to walk for 2 weeks? Doctor’s Answer:

An ankle sprain is graded on severity and symptoms. The inability to walk two weeks after an ankle sprain is concerning. Even in mild sprains, you do tear part of the ligament. In more severe sprains, more of the ligament is torn. It’s possible you could have injured more than one ligament, the cartilage, or the bone, which is not allowing you to walk. I recommend you see your doctor right away.

Mother & Child

ormally, after getting married to your love, there will be a part of your mother-inlaw that feels sad that she is no longer the number one woman in her son’s life. She may feel as if you’ve kidnapped her beloved son. This could probably lead to the emergence of some unwanted arguments between you and her, which is the last thing you need. Here are some must-dos to create the perfect bond between you and your mother-in-law.

r u o Y h it W d n How to Bo

? w a L n i r e Moth

Positive Attitude Always try to communicate a positive attitude towards her. She will probably be jealous in the beginning because you took her son, be smart enough by conveying a friendly altitude even if she is not. Eventually, you don’t want your husband to be stuck between you and his mother.

74 | October 2015

Equality Try to treat your mother-in-law and your mother equally. For instance if you give your mother a gift, then give your mother-in-law a gift too. When it comes to family visits, attempt to visit your mother and your mother-in-law with similar frequency. Sensitivity If your mother-in-law mentions how much her son likes her home cooking, do not try to mention that he likes your cooking. Allow her to express all things that mean a lot to her.

Bond Sit and chat with your mother-in-law, offer your help in preparing the meals, put her cooking tricks into your consideration, always praise her and her food, and frequently make her feel happy when she meets you. Information It is the nature of the women to know the latest personal updates, so try to keep mother-in-law in the image; call and let her be the first to know about important events including your pregnancy. If you have children, send her their pictures for instance. Advice Don't hesitate to take her advice. You may disagree with her, but be open to different ideas, show respect, and do not take any advice as a personal attack. She may give you an advice on raising your children, just listen to her carefully. Children Allow your mother-in-law to take care of your children, let her spoil them, play with them, or even cook them her favorite snacks. Communication Try to call her every day, even if you don’t have something to say. Just let her see that you are around, call just to say hello, smile when you see her, and offer help with anything. If she said something so annoying, do not keep it for yourself. Take Her Out For a Lunch Take your mother-in-law out for a lunch, just the two of you, to reveal your sincere intentions of getting to know her better. Allow her to talk about herself and discuss general topics to break the ice.

Respect Treat your mother-in-law with respect. She is older and wiser. Whatever kind of arguments you have with her, always remember that she is the mother of your significant other, so constantly be nice and respect her. Friendship To break the ice, you may open up a conversation with her about her childhood. Ask to see pictures of her childhood moments, request her way of raising your husband, and her life experiences. When she shares her life with you and when in return you share your life situations, you will create a special bond.

Share Your Interests You should both spend some time together doing the things each one enjoys. What you share and learn about each other's interests will enhance your bond including cooking or sewing or anything. Ask For Her Advice If she never approves of your cooking, turn the situation around by asking for her advice to make the food taste better. As long as the matter is not too personal, feel free to grant her the opportunity to share advices and valuable information. October 2015 | 75

Weeding Out For a Fall The Magic of Fall in Planning for a Better Harvest and a Better Self

pring has gone and summer will soon depart. The sweeping away of old fruit, produced from last year’s harvest, comes into play. A new garden must be created for the next spring. And my, how the proper seeds will be sewn!

Autumn’s harvest gives us the opportunity to taste traces of our lives’ past year, remembering the people in our lives and the memories we have created. There is a common saying in Black American culture of people “being into your life for a reason and a season.” And in every woman’s life, there comes a time, where preparing for the next seasonal abundance requires removing what is not useful in our lives. It requires picking out the weeds that have grown inside our garden’s harvest. Weeds that have accumulated themselves over a journey’s time. Whether it be friends, relationships, past lovers, career goals, hobbies, or life’s adventures, the beauty of starting over can be as refreshing as breathing the most heavenfilled mountain air. You get to start over. Sweeping out what no longer works, it becomes more and more evident how fruitful it feels to take control of that next step in our destiny. “What does the future hold for me?” “What do I want?” “What do I need to do in order to get there?” And of course, “how can I bring more love into my life?” Along with numerous others, these are some of the questions that permeate our minds. When we look at autumn’s harvest, are we happy with the fruits that have been produced? Such intrinsic questions leave us pondering over blatant truths of our realities. Are you satisfied with your harvest? That is the direct question, taking a courageous answer that one can muster. Requiring extra attention, it forces us to examine each fruit of the harvest. How large was each piece? When eaten, did it satisfy our taste buds delight? Or did it leave our mouth in a state of bitter-sour truth? Have the flavors diminished to an unfulfilling taste, void of nourishment? If our affirmations have been negated, 76 | October 2015

then perhaps our seeds were poorly planted. Or maybe, the vegetation was not properly cared for as fruits were blooming. Neglect and abuse on the journey to harvest may have occurred. The weeds grew in, and our harvest was not as rich and abundant as we had hoped. Or, maybe, they were absolutely delicious and fulfilling for this year. But now, a new production is required for a fresher journey. If you find yourself in any of the scenarios, then it is time to own up to the reality that it is you, who is the planter, and you who must harvest. For next spring and fall, do you have a different picture of not only the fruits of your harvest, but different arrangement, design, and pattern? What was efficient or insufficient of your harvest? When you think a lot about those “friends,” you thought had your back, and ended up not being so “friendly” after all. The true friend, who you are foreseeing a few more adventures together. The job/career that you can’t stand, and that one (or few) passions that you are hoping to turn into you money-making endeavor. The “love of your life,” who turned out to be the “jackass of all trades.” Or seeing your best friend as more than a source book for knowing men, eventually becoming the man in your life. And lastly, observing your own self-esteem, spiritual growth that you stayed away from. Going back and forth in your head leads to all types of questions as the map of your future harvest comes to life. Assessing your tools, your current seeds, and your vision, you are ready to prepare for next year’s harvest. And with a little guidance, we strategize to weed out our plan of practice. Weed #1: You remember your “jackass of all trades?” My, how fun it was, when he made promises that he couldn’t keep! Or how you found such random number on his phone, accompanied from female “friends,” who just happened to need him to come over at 1:00 in the morning. Suggestion: Dump Him!

Weed #2: Ah… the “friends.” Whodini’s 1984 hit asked us that rather important question. “Friends. How many of us have them?” That’s pretty important to know. Yet, if it seems that whenever you are in trouble you are often by yourself, perhaps, it is time to seek out some new ones. Weed #3: Being alone sometimes is not necessarily a bad thing. And if you have been off balance regarding your health and spiritual growth, then it’s time you start watering your garden a little more often. Neglecting your garden leaves us in a state of poor, inefficient produce. Get back to healthy nourishment and expect your harvest to be abundantly full next season.

Weed #5: As you look at your harvest, you get the idea for new colors and new fruits. You want to taste something different. Perhaps a new hair color or cutting your hair would do the trick. Whatever it may be, plan for a new wardrobe, or simply a new look. Change is always good, as you anticipate what next year’s harvest will reveal. So, with our plan in motion, hope fills our spirits, and we can ensure that our salacious fruits for autumn’s following paradise will showcase how we became better gardeners! Cheers!

Weed #4: Are you making sure that you are connecting with other gardens? Are you checking in with family members and those real friends (who would come to your rescue at a heartbeat) whom you lost touch with? Then perhaps it is best for you to call up, or go pay them a visit. Positive human touch and interaction is nourishing for the soul.

September 23 - October 22

Life: Whether your realize it or not, you’ll have the upper hand, so take advantage of this opportunity. Sit back and take a moment to appreciate your good fortune. Others will gravitate to you naturally, and you’ll always seem to have the right answers to the questions. Love: It seems that whatever you do has a potent effect on the life of someone close to you. Naturally, you would like your partner to be right there with you. But if they are unable to keep up the pace, you may need to be prepared to go the next few steps alone. Career: Great change is at hand. Trying to resist this change will only make your work more difficult. Hop on the bandwagon of new thought and cutting-edge ideas. Otherwise, you may be in a very difficult spot later on.

Sagittarius Keep up the positive self-esteem that you’ve been working on for the past several weeks; you’ll be presented with a situation where you can demonstrate your courage and independent mind. Capricorn Emotionally, you may find it hard to make decisions about anything even though you’re feeling called to do so. The good news is that you should feel much more clearheaded and stable by evening. Hang in there. Aquarius Independence is the key, so even though it may not be Independence Day, feel free to celebrate anyhow. Give thanks to all the freedoms you have.

Fashion Tip: Libras sparkle when they wear colors such as rose, lavender, blue, and teal - just not all at once! You are a true fashion lover and you are usually the first to try a new look.

Pieces Things may be unstable for you for a while, but improve quite a bit by the end of the day. If you can, get a full amount of rest so you can fully enjoy the latter part of the day.

Scorpio Be careful about planning things too much. Leave the morning open for spontaneous acts and haphazard events. Let the structure of the afternoon slowly evolve from the morning’s events. Enjoy a leisurely morning and see if you can convince someone to bring you breakfast in bed.

Aries Make sure you have an equal amount of give and take in your life. If someone gives you a compliment, know how to receive it graciously instead of brushing it off as something meaningless. At the same time, be generous with your compliments to others.

86 | October 2015

Taurus You should be able to find emotional stability when you form a relationship with someone you trust. Don’t get discouraged if this person tends to be aloof. Gemini Extend the day by getting up earlier than usual. Even though it may be hard to leave the comfort of your bed, the rewards will be many.. You’ll be much more productive by the end of the day. Cancer You may be trying to cling to something that doesn’t want to sit still. It’s like trying to grab a wet fish. The more tightly you squeeze it, the more likel it is to slip out of your grasp. The trick is to be more strategic and less frantic. Leo Some pressing matters might have you worried that you may have to postpone a much-needed vacation. You could be tempted to go into a funk over it, but don’t. If you budget your time and work efficiently, you’ll probably be able to go on your trip Virgo Some paperwork might need your attention. You may also be on the phone a lot. Communication should be clear, so you’ll accomplish what you need to. An intimate and loving conversation could take place between you and a close friend or lover.
