Background:

Artist Yoshimoto Nara was born 5 December 1959 in Hirosaki, Japan. Having had 40+ solo exhibitions since 1984, Nara’s been at the forefront of Japan’s Pop Art Movement since the early 1990’s. Subject matter of his sculptures and paintings are innocent depictions of seemingly innocuous subject matter like hybrid children and animals drawn with confident, cartoonish lines The Artist’s work appears cute and even vulnerable at first, sometimes branding weapons with anti war slogans. Art often touches on sensitive subject matter, what sets Nara apart is the child-like undiluted expressions he explores with aplomb. Nara’s intriguing yet bizarre works gaining him a cult status following with children & adults alike.

To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of its first store in Milan, Prada has launched the ‘Prada Galleria’ restoration project which will help to strengthen its Italian roots in the city. The renowned fashion house has plans to restore this ancestral property which will spread out to accommodate the new sales space and with room to house events. The exhibition space devoted to by the Prada Foundation will also be used to promote contemporary art. While development has begun in the seven story building, a dedicated men’s fashion space is already in operation and open. Located at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of thr world’s oldest shopping mall, this monumental outlet rubs shoulders with Duomo di Milano (known as the Milan Cathedral) and Scala (Opera house). In the beginning, Fratelli Prada or Prada Brothers was opened in Milan, Italy in 1913 by Mario and Martino Prada. The shop sold exclusive leather bags, trunks, beauty cases & luxury accessories. By 1919 Prada was appointed ‘Official Supplier to the Italian Royal Household’; acquiring the rights to incorporate the House of Savoy’s coat of arms and knotted rope design into its trademark. Miuccia Prada, Granddaughter of the dynasty, graduated in political sciences and later trained for several years as a mime at the prestigious Teatro Piccolo in Milan before joining her mother’s company in 1970.

The young Miuccia would eventually take over eight years later, presenting her first Prada collection which debuted in 1979. This was a turning point for the company as it included the birth of (the soon to be) iconic waterproof backpacks and totes made from an exclusive fabric called “Pocone”. Pocone was created in 1978 by Prada, the specialist hybrid nylon, with it’s fine twisted weave, appeared to be light as a silk and yet have waterproof properties. This diuscovery became an instant hit.The Nylon Bags, made from Pocone with it’s high pricepoint and seemingly understated aesthetics. Set the tone in fashion to what we refer to as a defining moment for the house. Cementing Miuccia’s role to commercial success for the family run business. Signaling the burgeoning importance of research, development and experimentation. New textile techniques, and innovative technology practises became signature for Prada.

A4

So an inquisitive take on ready to wear, brought cult like status for the designer to her legions of fans. That by 1993, Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli created the ‘Milano Prada Arte’, which became the ‘Fondazione Prada’ project to “gather the most challenging mental provocations of our time in art, architecture, cinema, philosophy and culture”. Miuccia also launched the Men’s RTW collection.

More recently made of vela nylon, an equally durable & refined fabric forms the updated addition to the Italian luxury house.

More recently, the designer was commissioned to create costumes for a multitude of artistic endeavours. Most notable by Catherine Martin (Costume Design/Director) for Baz Luhmann’s Academy award winning film - The Great Gatsby. Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald iconic novel, which takes place during the Golden Age of the Twenties. This old worldly charm meets new attitude is perfectly suited to the strengths of the house that Miuccia built and continuing the ongoing narrative between past and present to future. In 2014, the company now extends its exploration by way of acquitions, this time with Angelo Marchesi Srl, the historic Milanese pastry shop founded in 1824. Renowned for Milanese pastries and chocolate, all made to the equivalent of luxury standards. The inauguration of Prada’s new store in Florence, was met with restoration and conservation work of Laboratorio dell’Opificio delle Pietre Dure in collaboration with FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano paying tribute to the city Prada calls home.

Miuccia was awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) for accessories all in the same year. And this confidence reflected in reported sales at $210 million for the menswear line (vs 1994). Miuccia won another accolade from the CFDA the following year,1995 and bestowed the illustrious ‘Designer of the Year’ award.

The restoration of Giorgio Vasari’s Last Supper, seriously damaged in the 1966 by floods actually serves as a metaphor Prada bestows. This testiment proves that high culture breeds an appreciation for high fashion and vise versa. One can see the thoughtfulness under Miuccia’s watchful eye. Sending a strong message that Fashion has a place and very much alive and well in Milano. Meet the new world of Prada enjoyed with a slice of inspiration and dedication or few. LAB A4

With renewed vigour the company began expanding it’s business structure by collecting a steady portfolio of luxury brands in 1999. Stakes were aquired in Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, Church & Company and Fendi took place. And as part of a joint venture with De Rigo group, the brand launched a range of designer frames and sunglasses. Thenmade their mainstream debut in 1994, into the lucrutive fragrance market, with a range of exclusive artisanal fragrances. A growing series of fragrances steadily grew to entice the senses including; Prada Man & Infusion d’Homme.

Piaggi left her family in the 50’s to travel the world as an au pair and began her illustrious career as a translator for the Italian publishing company Mondadori. During the 1950s, the late Anna brazenly approached Elizabeth Taylor when she spotted the beauty at La Scala to ask for an interview. The actress obliged and Piaggi’s careerr in journalism was born. She married photographer Alfa Castaldi in 1962; a post-war reporter in Milan, the two outsiders paired up for the better and applied their talent and intelligence with fash-

her eagle like unconventional eye for spotting talent. Her visionary approach to edit the miriad of images and text, proved seemingly random but was carefully considered and had approval from industry and the mass alike.

The late Piaggi, joined Vogue in 1988 as a contributing writer and headed a wide-spread column, Editor- in-chief, Vogue Italia, Franca Sozzani realized her incorrigible talent and granted Anna complete creative freedom, which resulted in her becoming widely known for double page collage spreads. Penned monthly, the column titled, “D.P. Doppie Pagine di Anna Piaggi, gained fans across the globe for

Bringing the outdoor space to life takes careful planning, with placement of both organic and architectural forms. The pieces that attracted our attention are these vessels, entirely hand made in Belgium by a family run company called Atelier Vierkant. The vessels and accessories are created from a special clay based aggregate developed by the Atelier. With 5 standard colours (White, ExtraWhite, Grey, Black and Clay)

The art of pottery originated during the Neolithic period. Where ceramic objects like the Gravettian culture Venus of Dolní Věstonice figurine were discovered in the Czech Republic dating back to 29,000–25,000 BC and vessels discovered in Jiangxi, China date back to 20,000 BP. Early Neolithic pottery has also been found in Jomon Japan (10,500 BC), Russian Far East (14,000 BC), Sub-Saharan Africa and South America. History of this ancient artform has been updated with new technologies to produce a kind of super clay. Capable of withstanding even the most subtle-extreme weather conditions. Pottery essentially is made by forming a clay body into objects of a required shape and heating them to high temperatures in a kiln which removes all the water from the clay, which induces reactions that lead to permanent changes including increasing their strength and hardening and setting their shape. Prior to some shaping processes, clay must be prepared. To even out the moisture content and remove any trapped air introduced in the kneading process. Once a clay body has been kneaded and de-aired or wedged, it is shaped by a variety of techniques. After shaping it is dried and then fired.

shaping processes, clay must be prepared as previously described. Each different clay is composed of different types and amounts of minerals that determine the characteristics of resulting pottery. These regional variations in the properties of raw materials leads to wares that are unique in character to a locality. It is common for clays and other materials to be mixed to produce clay bodies suited to specific purposes. A common component of clay bodies is the mineral kaolinite. Other mineral compounds in the clay may act as fluxes which lowers the vitrification temperature. During periods of frost , humidity pentrates into the layers of terracotta clay and eventually splits the materials at the moments of thaw. To counteract this all the handcrafted pottery by Atelier Vierkant is fired at an extremely high temperatuire to close the pores and avoid infiltration of water. By treating the pots with an extra invisible layer of silicone, the containers become completely waterproof and less susceptible to frost/ this treatment is on request. for

Hand-shaping was the earliest method used to form vessels. This included the combination of pinching and coiling techniques. There are several materials that are referred to as clay. Differing including: Plasticity, the malleability of the body; the extent to absorb water after firing; and shrinkage, the extent of reduction in size of a body as water is removed. Different clay also differs in the way in which they respond when fired in the kiln. A clay body can be decorated before or after firing. Prior to the

like. I see the best in so many people and I try to learn from their examples. My agent Jason Kanner teaches me more then he realizes about responsibility and being a man.

LAB A4: Which Agencies do you belong? CHAD: I have a quite a few around the world. Soul Artist Mgmt. In new York..My mother agency is Mode Models in Calgary Canada... Dt mgmt. in Cali... “I love” in Milan...I’ve just signed with Kult in Germany which I am excited about. MGM in Paris...Hefner in Seattle...

My Dad mentors me to stay humble and to remember to appreciate the little things in life. I aspire to be as honest and sweet as my mother. Sounds corny but they are the kindest people. I always looked up to Will Smith growing up too.

LAB A4: Your big break and what would you say was the defining moment? CHAD: Its so hard for me to just choose just one. But I’d have to say when I worked with Steven Klein shooting L’uomo Vogue cover and 40+pages. I remember being told I got the job...and at that time I did not realize the magnitude of the situation. Coming from a sports back ground I couldn’t see how lucky I was. Looking back I wish I could shoot it again and embrace every moment of it.

LAB A4: Favourite quote or motivational saying? CHAD: I have so many, but my personal favourite inspirational quote, came from my 10th grade Political Science Teacher Mr. Freemark...he stuck a yellow sticky note on my desk while I was sleeping during class.... I woke up to an empty classroom and saw the sticky note... It Said “ A wise youth makes hay while the sun shines... but what a shame to see a lad sleep away his hour of opportunity” It woke me up in every sense of the word. LAB A4: What is your definition of success? CHAD: My definition of success is pretty simple... work hard enough to take care of my parents...take care of my family...make sure my kids to come don’t have to worry about money like I did...

I recently just did a shoot with Mert & Marcus and Karl Templer for interview mag...that was a huge second blessing. Especially since I grew my hair out after having a shaved head for 10 years. It’s like I started all over again changing my appearance. So I feel lucky to have another shot at all this. All these guys are the best photographers in the world so its such an honor for me to get in front of their lenses. LAB A4: Who would you say is your mentor or someone you aspire & look up to? CHAD: I don’t have one person that I aspire to be

Buy a house and grow old, tell stories to my grandkids about the crazy shit I did in my life. LAB A4: Favourite or signature scent? CHAD: Right now I’m loving Creed. Chanel... & Tom Ford LAB A4: Must have wardrobe pieces? CHAD: A good fitting black suit or a nice leather jacket.

LAB A4: Tell us something we dont know about you? CHAD: I am starting to fall in love with cooking.Having bought myself a few amazing cookbooks, new pots and pans, and a bad ass set of Japanese knifes. I cook almost every night for my brother and I in Brooklyn. Next stop would be a culinary arts school & classes. Maybe I’ll eventually win TOP CHEF ha-ha..

Oh ya and I am a trained Ninja. I studied under Bruce LAB: What can we expect from you in the coming year? Lee and I’m incredible with nun-chucks. CHAD: I don’t know why but I feel like this year is go- Thanks Chad, ing to be awesome in everyway.
