In 2012, collector Michelle Paterson and gallerist Iain Dawson joined forces to present a schedule of pop up exhibitions in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Sharing an edgy aesthetic with a particular passion for emerging artists, within the first 5 years of their practice, the pair presented their first exhibition CONVERSATIONS in November 2012. The next installment EXCHANGE follows on the theme of engaging first time and seasoned collectors looking to add an affordable and quirky edge to their collection. The artists presented in EXCHANGE all live and work in South Africa, a place more readily associated with traditional arts and crafts rather than cutting edge contemporary art. Each artist has garnered a huge amount of respect and interest in their home country, and now, international galleries and collectors are starting to pay attention. Barbara Wildenboer has recently signed with a Hong Kong gallery and will show in Zurich in 2013.

HATTINGH

Marna Hattingh is a Cape Town based artist, and has been active in the art world since 1999. She is also a well known children’s’ book illustrator. Her distinctive graphic style coupled with a wry sense of humor makes her illustration work instantly recognizable. As a contemporary South African artist Hattingh works forms part of the new school of expression. There may be elements of an African-ness in her work, particularly the use of colour, but she operates outside of any category. Her daily life experience of living in Cape Town is what informs her work. Her comments are subtly embedded in a deeply layered style. Her painted characters enact everyday gestures in a play of daydreams and flights of fantasy that form a series of narrative constellations. Her drawings combine both physical gestures and a very direct way of visualising thoughts. Her narrative content is immediate and personal - a journey of the imagination. Her painting style is unique. She inserts her colourful and finely painted imaginative characters into a timeless and highly decorative background. The style is both layered and fluid. She works in a range of media including drawing, painting, print making and sculpture.

OTEma

RoteMartha is a site specific work by the German artist Martin Pfeifle (1975). It was realized for the exhibition “ichoderduoderduderich” at the “Kunst aus NRW” in Aachen (Germany) 2010 but still has significance today with a message of looking beneath the wrapping. Pfeifle created a new way to look at the baroque architecture through a contemporary interruption. Red plastic stripes out o f 6 d i f fe re nt tones went through the whole exhibition space. The interruption of the s c u l p t u re g ave t h e ro o m s n ew dimensions and created new space as well as it hit some at the same time.
