EALTHCARE workers who have been on the frontline of the fight against Covid-19 for more than a year finally began receiving their vaccines last Wednesday at the General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital (formerly Stanger Hospital).

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers at the hospital are among the first to receive the vaccine on the North Coast.

KZN received 10 800 vaccines from the first batch of 80 000 Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine doses which arrived from Belgium on February 16.

The second batch arrived in the country on February 27 and consists of 80 000 J&J vaccines from Belgium bringing the total to 160 000 J&J vaccines received to date.

IDM approves adjustment budget JYOTHI LALDAS

T

HE iLembe District Municipality council has approved the adjustments budget for the 2020/2021 financial year.

Mayor Siduduzo Gumede presented the item to council and reported an increase in both the revenue and expenditure budgets.

The overall budget has been adjusted to R1 billion (revenue), and R968.3 million (expenditure).

Operations were adjusted to a net

surplus of R46.3 million for 2020/21; R8.8 million and R7.7 million for 2021/22 and 2022/23 respectively.

The total surplus including capital transfers and contributions for 2020/21 as approved amounted to R228.8 million; and the adjusted budget is now R293.0 million.

The 2021 total expenditure budget amounts to R1.2 billion, while the total Medium-Term Expenditure Framework amounts to R3.7 billion.

BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS •The budget for bulk purchases was ini-

tially appropriated at R216.2 million, but has now been adjusted up to R243.5 million.

•MIG reprioritisation on Umvoti water scheme to R2.6 million for the repairs and maintenance.

•A total of R196.8 million has been budgeted for the construction water infrastructure, of which R44 million is for refurbishment and renewal of existing water services assets.

•A total of R20.5 million has been provided on the capital budget to upgrade existing assets and R15.5 million has

been allocated for the construction of new waste water assets.

•As the old infrastructure ages, there is a demand for provision of more funding to renew the infrastructure in ensuring continued service delivery. This is done through repairs under operational budget and refurbishment through the capital budget.

IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE BUDGET R32.8 million has been set aside in the capital budget to acquire more water tankers, an excavator and TLBs in order to curb the spread of Covid-19 by

sufficiently providing water to communities. The projected full year expenditure on hired water tankers is around R 25 million.

This is mainly due to the fact that they were many water outages and leaks experienced in the first half of the financial year and this resulted in the demand for water through water tankers being increased.

Law enforcement clamps down WEEKLY REPORTER ILEMBE Crime Intelligence together with iLembe Rapid Response Team conducted an operation searching for suspects involved in house robberies at Ntshawini area, KwaDukuza on Saturday.

Two people were arrested and detained at KwaDukuza SAPS Members of iLembe Rapid Response Team then received information about a suspect at Lindelani with a firearm.

Following up on the information, they arrested one suspect found in possession of a homemade firearm and two live rounds of ammunition.

During another operation from Sunday to Monday, members of iLembe Rapid Response Team received information about a vehicle

carrying (transporting) dagga from Swaziland to Durban.

The description of the vehicle and registration was given to the team and the source further said that the vehicle was travelling on the N2 south bound.

With the given information members proceeded to the N2 at about 8pm when the vehicle arrived at the Mvoti toll gate.

The vehicle was stopped and searched which resulted in several parcels of compressed dagga being found. One suspect was charged at KwaDukuza for being in the possession of dagga.

The vehicle, a black BMW and 11 bags of dagga with total weight of 11kgs were recovered.

All suspects will appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court this week.

‘Federal Government Survival Fund’ a scam, says Sassa JYOTHI LALDAS A PHISHING text message circulating on social media saying that government is offering a R3 500 Covid-19 support grant to South African citizens is a hoax.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) confirmed that the texts are a scam.

Sassa issued a “fake news alert” urging those who have received the text not to share it further or open the link provided in the text.

In the alert Sassa also directs all current and potential recipients to the official SRD portal.

The text (pictured), titled “Get Covid-19 Support Grant Fund” says more than three million South Africans would receive R3 500 for a period of six months.

It adds that first time applicants would be paid out within 24 hours of approval and encourages the recipient to share the registration

link with friends and family. The text, which is predominantly being circulated on WhatsApp, contains a link to an unsecured website (pictured) that asks for the user’s personal information. According to the information on the website you are required to choose a method of payment and the funds would be paid into your account “as soon as possible”.

Commenting on the circulation of such texts, KwaDukuza SAPS communications official Priya Nunkumar urged people not to enter their personal details on any unknown online platform.

“We urge the community not to become victims of online scams which have recently been circulating on social media and WhatsApp. We urge the community to be vigilant and not enter their personal details such as their ID numbers or banking details on any unknown online platform.”

fter five day of searching for the body of a boy who drowned at Blythedale Beach, yielding no results, the search was scaled back as of Tuesday.

It is believed that the boy (16) got into difficulty while swimming and was swept out to sea by the current on Thursday afternoon, March 4.

KwaDukuza Municipality spokesperson Sipho Mkhize they had extended the search area from Blythedale Beach to around Prince’s Grant Beach and the Umvoti River Mouth but have still has no results.

“According to our lifeguards the body of the child may surface soon so we will keep looking.”

Mkhize appealed to families who visit the beach to ensure their children do not enter the water unsupervised.

“If there are no lifeguards on duty do not swim and do not allow your children to swim. If the current is strong get out of the water.”

‘HEARTSORE, but HOPEFUL’ JYOTHI LALDAS

ISTER Andrina Moodley is an ICU and trauma professional nurse who has been working in the Covid-19 unit at the General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital in KwaDukuza since April last year.

Moodley, who lives in Tongaat, was recently selected to join the vaccination team at the hospital.

“It gives me such pride and joy to serve my country in this time of need.

We will be vaccinating healthcare workers within the iLembe region and I am looking forward to that. With the vaccine we have hope, we are going to adapt to it, we are going to learn from it and we are going to grow from it.”

Moodley, a 32-year-old mother of two, said she never thought she would be at the forefront of such a “daunting and depressing” world event.

“I remember watching TV with my family when the news of Covid-19 first broke. I was completely lost for words, neither did I imagine I would one day be nursing in those circumstances nor did I think our country would be as badly affected as we were. I started working with Covid-19-positive patients in April. Initially, I never dreamed of Covid-19 spreading as

rapidly as it did.”

As a nurse she became overwhelmed, Moodley said.

“The need for more space and beds was evident with numbers shockingly increasing daily, the influx of patients, hospitals in the region filled to capacity. The news of lockdown sent shivers down my spine.”

She said at its peak, Covid-19 became a nightmare for her and her colleagues and a lesson they learned quickly in the unit was that the virus does not discriminate.

“The young, old, black, white, rich and poor, people of all religions were affected. Families were being torn apart. Children became orphans, spouses became widowed, parents losing children, sole supporters of many families were passing away. We all have felt the wrath of Covid-19 in some way or the other. It became a nightmare.”

Moodley described the past 12 months as a “fear-gripping emotional roller-coaster” not just for healthcare workers, but for patients too.

“They were in the ward with only healthcare staff — no family visits allowed and often no access to the outside world other than the nurses being a bridge to their families with many being too sick to access their phones.”

She said personally, working 12- to

13-hour shifts five days a week was tiring.

“Wearing full PPE in the KZN weather was uncomfortable to say the least. Working in the red zone with Covid-positive patients meant exposing myself to aerosol generating procedures, making me fall in the high risk category. It has been incredibly stressful, emotionally and mentally taxing to all healthcare workers.

“There were times when I became anxiety-stricken nursing +-75 patients at a time — critical patients who were on CPAP, Airvo and double oxygen. I am thankful I was able to work with a professional and dedicated team. My team and I have often went home with sore feet, full bladders, skipped meals and it was perfectly fine.

“Nursing is not just a job, it’s a calling. As long as our patients’ needs were met, it was a day well served and we won for the day.”

Despite her extensive time in the Covid unit working with positive patients, Moodley has never contracted the virus and she attributes that to the grace of God and strictly following Covid protocols.

“I always emphasise wearing of a mask, sanitising and social distancing.

Those little things help and ease the strain on the healthcare system.”

During this time, Moodley has had to sacrifice precious moments with her family for the greater good, she said.

“I had to sacrifice not seeing my family for days. I have two younger kids and being isolated from them is painful. I missed a lot of family time that I won’t get back due to the nature of my job.

“Whilst most parents were home reassuring their kids during lockdown, I was at work trying to preserve life.

“I remember once after work I got home and my son ran up to me excitedly showing me his report and how well he did and wanted a hug and I could not hug him as I had to isolate; that moment really left me heartbroken.”

Speaking about her best and worst experiences, Moodley said her worst was losing patients. “I take my job very seriously and get to know patients by speaking to them and learn about them. When a patient passes away it’s very difficult for me.”

Her best experience, she said, was handing over a once-critically ill patient, who had survived against all odds, back to their family.

“To see a patient walk out of the ward who was so sick, the joy, thankfulness and appreciation is a most heart-warming rewarding feeling.”

Her message to the public is one of hope.

“Covid has taught me to be grateful for everything and appreciate family and loved ones, for these are life’s most precious blessings. Live and enjoy every moment. Time is not guaranteed.

To the youth who want to pursue nursing as a career, do not give up hope.

Nursing is a calling, it is one of the most fulfilling careers. It is rewarding knowing you have helped save a life and made a difference.

“To my family and friends, thank you for all the love, support and encouragement on those difficult days.

“To my colleagues and fellow healthcare workers, it has been a tough year filled with challenging moments. We have been through dark times, we have lost our own, we have pushed ourselves to work harder than before, we have sacrificed our time, our families and even our own health; we have held in our emotions and tears for the sake of our patients, we often felt anxiety and often questioned, ‘are we next?’ The pain, the pressure and the stress is never left unnoticed. I thank you and salute you.

“From one healthcare worker to another may we continue to do our best, may we always remember our pledge — ‘I solemnly pledge myself to the service of humanity’.”

‘LET’S KEEP WITH THE TIMES,’ angler defends drone fishing JYOTHI LALDAS

HE use of drones for fishing purposes has seen mixed reactions from the angling community.

Drones are being used more and more by shore-based anglers to carry their bait further out to sea.

While an average person can cast out around 160 metres at best, the drone offers a 500-metre range.

This range of distance then opens up the question of whether drone fishing allows anglers to target fish that would otherwise be impossible to reach.

Well known provincial competitive angler Anand Naicker is one of the top drone fishermen in South Africa. According to Naicker, who was born and raised in Newark, there are a many misconceptions about drone fishing because it is a relatively new method being introduced into an old sport.

“Drone angling signifies an advancement in traditional fishing. It is simply a means of getting bait out further than a regular cast using your arms.

“Like any other part of life, we have to move with the times. It is no different than using kites or paddle skis to take the bait further and target areas that are more difficult to reach.

So, with those methods we have previously been able to access these areas, it is just that using a drone makes the process simpler.”

He said anglers using drones are considered hobbyists, so they do not need a Remote Pilots License (RPL).

“However, there are rules and regulations that we must follow during drone fishing.

These include a maximum fly distance of 500 m, we cannot fly out of our line of sight, we must fly under 46 m from the ground and not higher than the tallest building in the area.

“We also cannot fly over people or private property, within 50 m of people, buildings or roads, within 10 km of airports and at night.”

EC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal, Ravi Pillay, will launch a R20 million Tourism Relief Fund later this month as a lifeline for some 400 small businesses that are in dire financial straits as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The fund was announced by Premier Sihle Zikalala in his State of the Province address.

This fund will grant R50 000 for successful applicants. Chris Phili, a tourism business owner and chair of the Clermont Community Tourism Offices (CTO) outside Durban, and chairman of the Community Tourism Association, said the R50 000 grant will enable businesses to meet their overheads and pay their staff for three months.

Phili said his business was one of some 607 businesses in KwaZulu-Natal that received the national tourism relief fund, which helped to pay suppliers, staff and office staff.

“All that was required is proper accounts to be submitted,” he said, adding “these lifelines can mean a lot to very small businesses”.

In the past year the R200 million National Tourism relief has supported some 4 000 businesses across South Africa.

Heather Hunter, chairperson of the uMhlanga Tourism Association, said that being in Level 1 will boost confidence among potential tourists.

But Peter Rose, an uMhlanga guest house owner, said many tourists were still uncertain, “booking for the weekend and not much further”.

Pinetown-based B&B owner, Nokuthula Bond said the industry would take years to recover.

She said that the Tourism Relief Fund was much-needed but that tourism businesses needed to prepare for the coming third or fourth waves of the virus.

Angling Association to regulate the sport.

“There is currently no governing body and we want to provide structure to drone angling.

“We also want to provide education, training and assist with licensing. In this way violation of laws and regulations can be limited.”

He added that the majority of anglers who are using drones practice catch and release.

“This form of fishing does not take away from the sport as the angler will still have to fight and reel in the fish.

“However, drones do open the sport up to more people as they eliminates the need for complex casting manoeuvres. People with disabilities who were once not able to fish, now have the opportunity to do so,” he said.

The Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) has come out saying that the use of drones pose a new environmental challenge.

According to ORI linefish and marine protected area portfolio senior scientist Bruce Mann, deeper waters beyond casting range provided a refuge for certain species that drone fishing now exposes.

Mann said more pressure will be placed on some already vulnerable species like silver and dusky kob.

He said often bigger fish are targeted using drones, which meant a long fight that tires the fish out and makes them more vulnerable to predators when released.

He has called for government intervention to monitor and regulate drone fishing.

According to the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, drone angling is currently unregulated but research is being conducted to inform future policy.

Young talent to represent KZN JYOTHI LALDAS

EN-year-old Maxine Moonsamy from Etete will represent KwaZulu-Natal in the International Junior Miss South Africa 2021 pageant at Sibaya Hotal from October 6 to 10 this year.

The pageant will be the sixth for the Radha Roopsingh Primary School pupil, who found out about the competition through a WhatsApp poster shared by a friend she made during the Miss Durban 2019 pageant.

The pageant is a scholarship programme which encourages participants to aim for positive achievements and to develop and strengthen selfawareness.

Participants are awarded scholarships on the basis of their achievements during the weekend of the competition and throughout the year as International Junior Miss South Africa 2021 ambassadors.

However, to reach this goal, Maxine is in need of support to raise much needed funds for the competition.

She will have to cover the cost amounting to around R15 000 for her registration, entry fee, travel and accommodation in addition to the cost of her outfits for the event.

Speaking to the Weekly, Maxine’s mother, Beatrice Ncamane said Maxine’s hobbies are teaching other children how to draw, making paper bags, paper shoes, listening to music and playing games with others.

“Maxine is a quiet, smart kid with lots of curiosity in her because at certain times she asks rare questions that even I can’t answer without searching the internet.

“She doesn’t like to see someone suffering from abuse and doesn’t like to be ignored when she’s talking.”

According to Ncamane, Maxine’s goal is to win this pageant to inspire other children to do their best to grown their talents.

A NEW Democratic Alliance (DA) iLembe District constituency leadership was elected on Saturday at their annual general meeting which covers Mandeni, Maphumulo, Ndwedwe, and KwaDukuza.

Kathleen Naidoo, who served as acting chairperson for the last two years, was elected as chairperson, Bulelwa Mvulana as deputy chairperson and Krsna Sing as secretary.

Naidoo brings a wealth of knowledge having previously served as deputy chairperson, eight years as an activist and 10 years as a councillor in the Mandeni Municipality. “Every vote counts. The DA is the only party that holds the three spheres of government to account. Lets unite and together accomplish our dream of a prosperous South Africa.”

Mvulana has been a DA supporter since 2012, an activist since 2017 and councillor from 2019.

ROJECT X KZN hosted their first feeding event this past weekend, with 150 meals being donated to the community of Happy Valley in Glenhills.

The Project X events will now take place monthly.

Project X was born out of necessity at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in Johannesburg and has since expanded to KwaZulu-Natal.

The initiative started by collecting cash and kind donations for an animal shelter, PETS – Pet Empowerment in Townships, due to the number of animals being surrendered as owners couldn’t afford to take care of them.

From there it grew to include a feeding scheme, as people are suffering to feed themselves daily.

The organisation is registered with CIPC and currently awaiting a PBO\NPO number from SARS. The two main activities undertaken by Project X are a feeding scheme that runs every month where between 150 to 200 meals are distributed in rural areas and offering support to 12 different charities within a year, one different organisation each month, by donating items such as groceries, toiletries and any other form of service e.g painting, renovations, etc.

To achieve these goals, donations are needed.

Izwi Lothando is primarily aimed at creating work opportunities for children from disadvantage backgrounds by raising funds to fund the education and registration of students that have excelled in their matric.

The organisation also introduced their own product called Izwi Lothando Peanut Butter which is manufactured locally by students in the agriculture field of study.

The keynote address was delivered by Buyiswa Phamla, Community Development Manager from the regional office, representing MEC of Social Development Nonhlanhla Khoza. Phamla expressed words of encouragement to the 50 families that were beneficiaries on the day.

The MEC’s office donated grocery vouchers to the value of R1300 per month redeemable from any Boxer Supermarket.

She also said that for other families where the breadwinner has passed on due to Covid-19, the vouchers will be accessible for the next 12 months and will continue until someone in the family is employed.

The office of the MEC announced that they will be forming an alliance with the charity organisation and would always lend a helping hand in programmes dedicated to helping the community.

THE KwaDukuza Mall partnered with Izwi Lothando Home and Community Based Services charity organisation and the office of the MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal to host a charity drive programme on Saturday.

KwaDukuza Mall and the local charity organisation donated clothing, blankets, nappies, sanitary pads and food parcels to 50 families that have been affected by the Covid -19 pandemic, where some families breadwinners have passed due to the virus and others where breadwinners have lost their jobs due to retrenchments caused by the impact of Covid-19 in the workplace.

Joseph Sebidi, the KwaDukuza Mall building supervisor said the mall joined the outreach programme in order to give back to the community that has been very supportive in its two years of operation.

Sebidi gave praise to the efforts put in by Phila Zulu (Izwi Lothando) and Siyabonga Tembe (KwaDukuza Mall Centre Manager) in putting the programme together and ensuring that it had a positive impact in the community.

New name not enough ADRIAAN BASSON For many years, the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape has been one of the worst run government entities in South Africa.

Instability, rampant corruption, blatant cronyism and poor service delivery have been the hallmark of the municipality, that oversees the affairs of Port Elizabeth, renamed Gqeberha last week.

In the latest case of corruption, nine people, including two municipal officials, were arrested in November 2010, for corruption totalling R56 million with the City’s rapid bus system.

In his 2017 book How to Steal a City, former municipal administrator Crispian Olver outlines forensically the mafia structures in charge of the City’s tender system.

In 2016, the voters of Gqeberha booted the ANC, which had been mismanaging the City since 1994, out of power. The DA received almost 47% of the vote, followed by the ANC’s 41% and the EFF on five percent The DA-led coalition government didn’t fare much better, also recording consecutive quali-

fied audits and collapsing when the party’s affair with smaller parties crumbled.

Currently, the DA holds the mayoral seat again, but chances are good that the municipality will return to the ANC when South Africa votes later this year.

There is no denying that the name Port Elizabeth was a colonial relic from the days when the city was under British control. Those days are long gone, and nobody can seriously argue against the introduction of a name that has much more meaning to the citizens of Gqeberha. Many other towns in the province also received new names. All good. But here is the thing; this is a province that is continually teetering on the brink of collapse. A name change is symbolically, culturally and politically significant, but it does not mean jobs, water in taps or no more potholes.

Take the example of Makhanda, which was known as Grahamstown until 2018. The name change was welcomed widely, but very little has changed in the lives of the people who live in that town.

Last week, News24 carried a report from GroundUp reporter Loyiso Dyongman about

the desperation of Makhanda residents to obtain water after the municipality’s ability to provide the most basic needs to its citizens collapsed.

“I have never seen something like this in my life,” Makhanda resident Nomfusi Apleni told GroundUp. “People drinking dirty water like animals.

We don’t even know if the water has human waste in it because this is not closed and kids play here.”

Apleni was referring to an old water air valve chamber where desperate, thirsty residents had to collect their water after their taps had dried up.

Gift of the Givers has essentially taken over the running of water services in the town, but even this godsend of an NGO has not enough capacity to provide continuous water delivery to all the people of Makhanda.

“There is no water at home and I couldn’t wash my school uniform. I didn’t bath today because the little water we had at home was finished yesterday. I don’t know how we are going to survive if the situation carries on like this,” resident Amanda Schoeman told GroundUp.

The state of affairs in this town is a frightful reminder that a name change on its own means very little if not accompanied by basic service delivery and new opportunities. Crudely put, you cannot drink a new name.

Of course, we shouldn’t have to choose between drinking water and decolonising the names of our towns and cities. But the state of governance in most of our local municipalities leads to the unfortunate conclusion that the ANC is much better at changing names than providing service delivery or creating economic opportunities.

I wish they could do both with the same level of enthusiasm and verve.

I have no doubt that Minister Nathi Mthethwa, who approved the name change, and the local ANC, will proudly trumpet their brave achievement during election rallies in Gqeberha later this year.

It will be much easier to talk about that than the dilapidating affairs of most cities and towns in the Eastern Cape, for the longest time on the watch of the ANC. · Adriaan Basson is editor-in-chief of News24.

How corporations are reshaping the Web JENNIFER GRYGIEL When Facebook disabled Australians’ access to news articles on its platform and blocked sharing of articles from Australian news organisations, the company moved a step closer to killing the World Wide Web — the hyperlinkbased system of freely connecting online sites created in 1989 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Though the social media giant has said it will return to the negotiating table and restore news for now, the company has shown its hand — and how it is continuing to reshape the web.

As a social media scholar, I see clearly that the internet in 2021 is not the same open public sphere that Berners-Lee envisioned.

Rather, it is a constellation of powerful corporate platforms that have come to dominate how people use the internet, what information they get and who is able to profit from it.

The Australian government’s legislative efforts aim to support the news industry by

helping to broker a deal whereby Facebook would pay Australian news organisations for content posted on its platform by users. Right now, Facebook isn’t required to pay for news in any way, and the company objected to this potential new cost of business.

Berners-Lee warned the Australian government the proposed law could undermine free linking, which he called a “fundamental principle of the web”.

Facebook’s own statement of self-defence focused on Berners-Lee’s argument, saying Facebook provides value to news organisations by linking to them.

But their statements show that neither has acknowledged that Face­book has, for many people, effectively become the web.

Back in the 1980s, Berners-Lee envisioned the web as a network of community-minded academic researchers sharing their knowledge quickly and conveniently across the world.

The main mechanism for this was the hyperlink — text that, when clicked on, led read-

ers to something they were interested in, or to supporting material on the actual source’s website.

This meant information was freely exchanged, with attribution. The priority was helping users find the material they wanted, wherever it was online.

Berners-Lee’s design serves the reader, but not everyone was as public-spirited.

Companies like Facebook have been moving away from this principle since the web’s founding. These corporate platforms are designed to capture and dominate users’ attention — and turn it into money.

When a user posts a link on Face­book, it’s not just a hyperlink as Berners-Lee envisioned.

It’s much more advanced, displaying information from the linked page, including, for news stories, a headline, a main image and sometimes a summary of the news users might see if they clicked the link.

In this way, users can get a lot of the information without ever leaving Facebook, hurting

On Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, users’ options are even more restricted.

People can post photos and text, but cannot directly share links to other websites. The only active links in a post are internal, for tagging others on Instagram and hashtags.

In my view, both cases show that Facebook doesn’t really want an interconnected web: It wants to keep its users on its own platforms.

Facebook displays valuable information, but if people don’t click through, or there is nothing to effectively click on, then those who actually created the content will continue to have a hard time making money off their work.

The situation in Australia is a significant opportunity to examine how much power Facebook has over the ways people can seek information online.

News media may decide to bid farewell to Facebook, which provides about one-fifth of traffic to media sites in Australia, and not necessarily much revenue in other parts of the world.

They might seek other options for digital distribution of their content. But in the near term they may need financial help from somewhere if they have become too dependent on Facebook.

Or news organisations could negotiate with Facebook directly in deals and avoid restrictive laws, as the proposed legislation is not yet final.

News publishers could also ask regulators to help them gain more control over how news content is presented on platforms to increase link referral traffic, which is key to generating revenue.

A return to simpler hyperlinks — and adding them to Instagram — could help more users click through on news stories while preserving the principles of the web.

Just because advanced technology exists doesn’t mean it’s helpful in all situations or good. But then again, a basic old-timey solution may not work for those trapped in the “attention economy”.

Summing up, Mitsubishi’s Pajero Sport is big enough for most families, competent on most trails and goat tracks, comfortable when the going is gravelly and fairly priced for what it can do. I would happily have one.

BLACHOWICZ EDGES ADESANYA to retain UFC crown J AN Blachowicz bounced back from a slow start to outpoint Israel Adesanya and retain his light-heavyweight title after an enthralling tactical battle at UFC 259 in Las Vegas this week.

In the co-main event, Amanda Nunes blasted Megan Anderson en route to an easy first-round submission win to defend her featherweight title, and Petr Yan lost his bantamweight belt to Aljamain Sterling when he was disqualified for an illegal knee.

Despite holding the belt, Poland’s Blachowicz came into the fight as the underdog, and Adesanya’s slick movement and striking had him in control for much of the first three rounds. However, Blachowicz turned the tide in the final two frames, taking the previously undefeated Nigerian, who was seeking to add the lightheavyweight belt to his middleweight title, to the mat and controlling him with ease.

“Now I think I deserve some respect. I’m the true champion right now,” a triumphant Blachowicz said after the fight.

In the co-main event, Brazil’s Nunes needed just over two minutes to dismiss her opponent, rocking Anderson early with some powerful right hands before taking the fight to the ground and securing the win with an armbar.

The win was the 12th in a row for the 32-year-old Nunes, who also holds the UFC’s bantamweight title, and her ninth straight victory in a title fight, with her last loss coming to Cat Zingano in September 2014.

In the bantamweight title bout, Aljamain Sterling became the first UFC fighter to be crowned champion via disqualification when Yan struck him with an illegal knee to the head in the fourth round.
