Greytown is their new home At the beginning of the year, a Belgian family arrived in Greytown with four children. The children include twin girls, Marilysse and Marylaine in Grade 2, Laurysse in Grade 4, and Joshua in Grade 5, and they were set to begin schooling at Wembley College. The family, whose home language is French, are now comfortable speaking English. Parents Julie and Ulysse Baguida said moving to South Africa and Greytown in particular was due to an educational project. “Could we be going to South Africa? This is the question we asked ourselves after two refusals from the Belgian government for an educational grant to Central African Republic and Cameroon. “This educational project was born out of a vision to solve problems of poverty and insecurity in Africa through education and training,” said Ulysse. At a European conference in Belgium in 2018, Ulysse made contact with a South African innovation organisation. “This is why we asked ourselves the question, “Why South Africa?” We believed - and still believe - that innovation will play a key role in developing the level of education in Africa, and thus its economy. “So, when this new, admittedly rather unexpected, door opened, the whole family travelled to Pretoria in July 2018 to initiate contacts with South African institutions,” he said. After numerous meetings were held with different agencies and the institutions were slow to respond, they did not reach an agreement. Appointments were made with the Department of Education in Pretoria, but then the Covid-19 pandemic began and disrupted the programme. “Nevertheless, through long-distance contacts with some companies, we were put in touch in 2020 with “A Better Africa”, of

which Scelo Mbonambi is a member, and through Mbonambi, Wembley College, Michael and Louise Yeadon, we first visited Greytown in July during the KZN looting. “Far from being discouraged by these turbulent circumstances, we were convinced that South Africa needed this project in order to grow and solve its problems of poverty and a lack of education. Mbonambi then approached schools in the surrounding area and allowed us to visit some of them. “Together with Scelo Mbonambi, Michael and Louise Yeadon we sensed the potential for a partnership. The Umvoti community was very enthusiastic. To validate the process, a letter of commitment to the Belgian Government was signed through Wembley College, representing the Umvoti community, which was aware of the need to provide sustainable support to this community,” said Ulysse. “After praying in the name of the Lord Jesus for the acceptance of this letter, we sent it to the Belgian Government and, to our great joy, they accepted it. We then realised, we were being called to lead this project in South Africa. However, there was still one step to be taken: the Belgian Council of Ministers had to sign off on the project before it could receive funding. Having been promised support, our whole family left home, relatives, work and school on 6 January, without definite confirmation of the project. “The signature from the Belgium government finally arrived 12 days later. Since then we have been aware and convinced that a story is being written in Greytown, South Africa, Africa and beyond. And while we realise that there will be many challenges, we keep our faith and we want you to be part of the story. We hope you will join us in our endeavour to bring education to many areas that need our support. So this is how, we landed in South Africa, Greytown, from Brussels,” said the couple.

R10 m would make SA citizens content

Municipal property rates act discussion held

What would it take to live your absolutely ideal life? If you are an American, the answer is pretty clear, a new study on “unlimited wants” shows: a trillion rand. But given the option of winning that amount of money, most South Africans were not interested, choosing to forgo a hypothetical R1 trillion payout in favour of something between R10 million and R100 million. That relatively paltry sum, it seems, is all they think they’ll need to be happy. It is a common assumption that people always want more, say the UK authors of the study “Evidence from 33 countries challenges the assumption of unlimited wants”, published in Nature Sustainability. But for most people, including the majority of South Africans, that appears not to be true. The study relied on two surveys of some 8 000 people in countries as diverse as Argentina, India, and Sweden. They were asked to put themselves into a no-limits kind of mindset. “Please think about what your absolutely ideal life would be like,” one survey urged. “You do not need to be concerned about whether or not you can realistically achieve this. We want you to consider how much money you would want in your absolutely ideal life.” A handful of South Africans said they would prefer to win R100 000 or R1 million rather than the bigger numbers. — Business Insider SA.

Councillor gives back THABILO MZOBE A young Umvoti councillor has decided to clean up his community and give back to residents. With the Covid-19 pandemic still persisting and during a time when hygiene is highly important to protect our community and loved ones, he feels it is important for residents to live in a clean environment. According to councillor Mfundo Masondo of the ABC party, the residents of Umvoti Ward 7 are facing a dire situation where every vacant space is turned into a dumping site because litter is not being collected as it usually was before. Masondo was the local runner-

up ABC councillor of Ward 7 and also an ABC representative at uMzinyathi District. He has taken up the task to organise a clean-up campaign. However, on certain days this project had to be placed on hold due to the lack of resources. Mfundo believes in giving back to the community who took their time to cast their votes, saying they have the right to access proper service delivery. “Health issues are becoming a problem as one of the main dumping sites situated in Greytown, is overflowing with litter and carries a bad odour to nearby businesses and residents and different insects are all over. “The questions that are of con-

cern by the residents, is what is the waste department is doing about this problem?,” said the councillor. Masondo is one of the youngest councillors in uMvoti but has implemented the clean-up initiative as part of celebrating Youth Month and he pledges to always prioritise the needs of the residents as he is a servant of the public. He said that he will be sending the progress report of the initiative to the local councillor of Ward 7 councillor S.K Ndlovu. The residents are grateful and have shown appreciation for the initiative as they are willing to provide assistance due to the shortage of resources.

To address concerns over inconsistencies and irregularities in the Municipal Property Rates Act (MPRA) regarding agricultural and rural sectors, the KZN Agricultural Union (Kwanalu) hosted a MPRA webinar on Tuesday, June 14 with leaders from KZN Associations. Following a Municipal Property Rates Survey conducted by Kwanalu among its membership base, it was found that there were inconsistencies in rates policies, rate randages, rebate structures and valuation methodologies throughout KZN. “With accurate information in hand, collective action can be taken to ensure municipalities do not ‘materially and unreasonably prejudice’ the agricultural and rural sectors when implementing the MPRA,” said Kwanalu CEO, Sandy La Marque. Key findings from the MPRA survey were presented by John Flanagan from the Kwanalu Land Desk, with best practices and recommendations provided by Kwanalu board member Bobby Hoole. The MPRA webinar sought to provide guidance for association leaders on rural landowners’ rights, possible challenges and strategies on how to engage with local municipalities proactively and effectively. “It is important that key issues such as municipal property rates and others pertaining to rural and agricultural sectors are critically evaluated and discussed to initiate essential change in order to secure a sustainable future for agriculture in the province,” said La Marque. Ten signs your child might be addicted to gaming Gaming addiction is the uncontrollable use of video games characterised by compulsive behaviour. It can develop after a long period of excessive gaming. People can often develop an addiction to games because they are designed to be naturally addictive by creators who incorporate small “wins” into the game that keep you coming back for more, including high scores and completing levels. On average, 860 searches each month appear from concerned parents asking “how to break a child’s video game addiction”. In 2019, the United Kingdom opened a clinic specifically to treat children and young adults with addiction to playing video games after the World Health Organisation (WHO) recognised “gaming disorder” as a medical condition. The clinic reported seeing about 17

clients between January and May last year, and this year about 56 people entered treatment at the clinic around the same time. The addiction specialists team at the private rehab clinic, Delamere, also based in the UK, has revealed how to recognise signs that your child is addicted to gaming before it gets out of control and how to prevent it. Ten signs to look out for: 1. Loss of interest in activities According to the addiction specialists, losing interest in activities they used to enjoy is the first sign of addiction. The specialists say that children who become addicted to games can often start to neglect other things that usually make them happy, such as socialising with family and friends, sports or other hobbies. 2. Irritation when they can’t play Another sign to look out for when sus-

pecting your child is addicted to video games may be to check if they become angry or upset when their games are taken away. 3. Playing for hours on end Another obvious sign that parents are warned about is when their child begins to spend hours and hours without a break in front of their devices, and sometimes they may continue to play despite being told to reduce the amount of time they spend gaming. 4. Lying about time spent gaming According to the addiction specialists, once your child starts lying or trying to conceal how much time they spend gaming or start going behind the parent’s back to play video games, parents should know that they might be dealing with addiction. 5. Talking about their games constantly Addiction specialists say there is nothing wrong with your child being

on their life, including sleep deprivation, losing friends and arguing with their parents. 10. Neglecting personal hygiene Another symptom of gaming addiction can include neglecting personal hygiene, such as avoiding showers or not changing clothes for days on end so they can spend more time gaming. How can parents and caregivers prevent gaming addiction? Dr Catherine Carney, a Delamere psychiatrist, explains how parents can put measures in place to help combat their child’s video game addiction. She notes that one of the most effective methods is setting a timer for your child to play their chosen game. Once the timer has gone off, they have to turn off the computer and move on to a different activity, allowing them to enjoy their game in moderation. Another strategy is to set up rules that your child will only play with friends — having such restrictions will remove the isolation aspect of gaming addiction, says the psychiatrist. Dr Carney also suggests a gaming party rather than a lengthy solo session. — Parent24. engaged or passionate about a game they’re playing, but when it becomes all they talk or think about, that could be a warning sign of game addiction. 6. Declining school performance When children start playing games for too long, they become distracted from other responsibilities they may have. The addiction specialists say that those suffering from addiction will often be waiting for school to end so they can play games — which results in making mistakes in class or declining performance in school work. 7. Interrupted sleep habits When children game while they should be sleeping, they begin to show signs of sleep deprivation and a change in their mood. 8. Being preoccupied, depressed or lonely Gaming can be pretty isolating, and those addicted to it can often withdraw themselves from people in the real world. This could result in a low mood or withdrawal when you try to engage in conversation with them. 9. Continuous gaming despite negative effects Children addicted to gaming may continue playing despite the negative consequences it has

Pietermaritzburg-born wildlife filmmaker, Dale Hancock, received three Emmy awards for his work in the hit Netflix documentary Penguin Town. The documentary was nominated in six categories for the Daytime Emmy Awards which are widely considered the pinnacle of television awards. Hancock said he was deeply honoured by the recognition and thanked his team as well Norwegian filmmaker Alex Sletten, who came up with the film concept. The Emmys were the latest recognition for the multi-award winning documentary which focuses on the endangered penguins. For Hancock, who now lives in Howick with his family, this was his second Emmy award win after he won it in the 2000s for his editing work in the National Geographic documentary Stalking Leopards. The eight-part documentary follows the shenanigans of these “boisterous” penguins as they descend on Simon’s Town, on the Western Cape coast for their mating season. Hancock said they started shooting the documentary from December 2019, through the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, until August 2020. During the country’s first major lockdown, Hancock said the team were ordered to return to their respective homes while Sletten managed to stay behind and in the process shot some of

the film’s most striking footage. “He was able to film the penguins coming through town and all those species which normally would not venture out during the day and deep into the city in the way that they did, fortunately he was there to capture it,” he said. Hancock, who has been a wildlife filmmaker for about 30 years, said he hopes the international awards also bring more awareness about the plight of African penguins. As is depicted in the documentary, the African penguins face extinction as their numbers dwindle every day due to human activity and climate change. “Awareness is imperative for their survival,” said Hancock. “Their natural breeding grounds have all been destroyed and affected by human encroachment. Some of the islands on our coast where they used to breed have been mined and decimated. It is part of the reason they have started coming into Simon’s Town.” Through his work, Hancock said he hoped to continue to shine a spotlight on the importance of conservation. While technological advancements have been made since Hancock started in the wildlife industry, he said it was “not as strong as it was.” “People are losing passion for the wilderness as more of it is encroached upon. People are more interested in what shoes and model of cellphone that they have.”

Little Oaks navigate traffic Our Little Oaks could not wait for Traffic Day. Finally, the day - last Friday - arrived and the excitement reached a fever pitch on the morning of the Traffic Day. All the pupils from Grade RRRR to R sped around and around the track on their scooters, bicycles and tricycles. Their

teachers stood on the sidelines cheering, guiding and (in some cases) running alongside or pushing pupils on their bikes. It was a busy, happy morning which was a lovely way to recapture and to practise all the traffic rules that our pupils learn. – Supplied.

Proteas Women shine Captain Suné Luus and fast bowler Shabnim Ismail shone as the Proteas women thrashed Ireland in the third and final ODI against Ireland at the Pembroke Cricket Club in Dublin last week. South Africa bowled Ireland out for 89 as they clinched a 189-run win to clean sweep the Irish 3-0 in the three-match ODI series. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, the Proteas got off to a rocky start after Tuesday’s match-winning opener Andrie Steyn was run out for 14. In-form Lara Goodall departed early, too, as she was stumped off the bowling of Rachel Delaney for 18. A splendid 177-run partnership formed between opener Laura Wolvaardt and Luus took the Proteas to a competitive total. Wolvaardt made 89 off 125 balls ( hitting six fours) before she was caught off the bowling of Jane Maguire (1/46). Luus stood tall with the bat and fell seven runs short of her maiden ODI century as she scored 93 off 105 balls (hitting 11 fours) before falling to Arlene Kelly. It was the perfect build-up to the England series for the Proteas middle-order as they posted a competitive 278/5. Kelly was the pick of the Irish attack as she captured all-rounder Chloe Tryon (17) to end on figures of two for 40. Chasing 279 runs to win, the Irish top-order collapsed early thanks to a stunning five-wicket haul by Ismail. Ismail was ruthless, getting captain Gaby Lewis and Rachel Delaney to edge behind in the safe hands of Trisha Chetty for a duck. Shortly thereafter, Ismail bowled Leah Paul (1) and Shauna Kavanagh (0). Spinner Raisibe Ntozakhe got the wicket of Sophie MacMahon (4) as Ireland was reeling at 13-5. A 57-partnership formed be-

tween Mary Waldron and Kelly before Luus broke the stand by trapping Waldron LBW for 32 off 69 balls (three fours). Kelly was run out for 29 as the hosts continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Ismail captured a stunning five for eight in 8.5 overs as Ireland was skittled out for 89. The Proteas now gear up for their all-format tour to England from June 27 to July 25. Marizanne Kapp, Lizelle Lee and Sinalo Jaftha have been included in the squad for the United Kingdom leg of their tour. The trio didn’t take part in the three ODIs and three T20s against Ireland, but are back with the bigger threat of England looming in the form of a once-off Test, three ODIs and three T20s. The one-off Test will take place in Taunton from June 27, while the limited-overs games will take place next month. Tazmin Brits, Raisibe Ntozakhe and Delmi Tucker will return to South Africa following the Ireland

Proteas women’s coach Hilton Moreeng said they’re expecting a tough, but educational tour of England, especially due to the fact they’ve got a Test match to play. “Now that we are going to England, we know that we are going to start with a format that most of them haven’t played in a while, other than the preparation that we had, so it is exciting times, especially as a young cricketer in the squad,” Moreeng said. “We are up against a very competitive team; a team that plays well in their conditions. “It’s going to be tough as we go along, but at the end of the day, we are excited with the group that we have and we now have an opportunity against the hosts to be able to win a series in England,” Moreeng said. – Sport24.

One of the best female athletes in the world, the holder of four world records and two world bests, Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba has announced that she will run in the Absa Run your City 10K on Sunday, July 10. After finishing third at the first event of the 2022 Absa Run your City Series, Event Organiser, Stillwater Sports, has confirmed that Dibaba will be back to again attempt a world class 10km time, when she takes on the second event in the series, the Absa Run your City DURBAN 10K. She will join thousands of other runners as they #RunForDurban to raise money for people severely affected by the recent floods in KZN. “Having Genzebe Dibaba race in the Absa Run your City 10K is a massive privilege and confirms that we are serious about bringing the best in the world to South Africa to race against SA’s finest on home soil,” said Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports and founder of the series. “Our goal is to give South Africans world class competition and the Absa Run your City Series is doing just that. That Dibaba comes here to race shows that we are on the right track to achieving this objective. The cherry on top is that, although an athlete like Dibaba is in demand worldwide, she has expressed a strong desire to run in Durban to again experience a world class event on African soil.” “I have unfinished business, as I came here to win and run a fast time, so I will be back,” were the words of Dibaba after her thirdplace finish at the Cape Town event earlier this year. Dibaba crossed the line in 31:02, the third fastest time ever run in South Africa by a female athlete. Now she has her sights set on returning to South Africa to race in the Absa Run your City 10K on 10 July – and is eager to break the SA All

Comers record of 30:40 set by Stella Chesang in the Cape Town leg of the series on 15 May 2022. Dibaba, although running a superb 31:02 in Cape Town felt she could have gone faster in her 10km debut on the road and is eager to see just how much faster she can go come 10 July. “I made some mistakes and it cost me in Cape Town,” said Dibaba. “But this was only my first ever 10km and only my third road race, so I am still learning how to race on the roads. It is very different to the track.” And it is on the track, in particular on the bouncy curves of the indoor circuit, that Dibaba was so dominant with four gold medals at the World Indoor Championships in the 1500m and the 3000m to go with the World Indoor Records in the mile, 3000m and 5000m. Dibaba still holds the 1500m World Record outdoors and the fastest ever times over the 2000m (5:23.75) and 2miles (9:00.48) indoors. The two excursions on the road prior to her visit to Cape Town on 15 May, were over 5km in Carlsbad in 2015 where she clocked 14:48 to win (18th on the World All Time List), and 65:18 in the Valencia Half Marathon, also for a victory. The 31-year-old Ethiopian has been in hard training in Addis Ababa (2300m altitude) for specifically the Absa Run your City Durban 10K and all indications is that she is approaching form that rivals the best of her career. That Dibaba has the speed is without question, her numerous World Records are proof enough. With her new focus on the roads, expect more records to be under threat and first and foremost will be the 30:40 SA All Comers Record. The Durban event takes place on Sunday, July 10 and the entry Fee is for standard (Licensed) participants is R235.

Wembley teachers dominate match Wembley teachers took on the high school pupils in the matrics final hockey match of the season recently. The matric pupils came dressed for success in their pyjamas. Their strong, disciplined, professional teachers team were overwhelming in their numbers and brightly coloured socks.

It was a tightly contested match with player of the match going to the head of the junior school Mrs Goble who swept the field with her “Harry Potter” broomstick. Mr Taljaard, the head of academics in the high school, was the player with the most potential but he was yellow carded on numerous occasions for back-chatting

the referee. Mrs Sneyd, head of pastoral care in the high school, was disqualified for carrying an extra player on board. Well done to both teams for providing the school with the most entertaining play of the season.
