A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

wo Pietermaritzburg models have made history as they both made it to the top 10 in the Miss South Africa finals. Ayanda Thabethe (22) from Taylor’s Halt and Luyanda Zuma (20) were announced as the top 10 finalists on Monday evening. Apart from representing the City of Choice in this competition, Thabethe and Zuma are also representing KwaZulu-Natal as they are the only two woman from the province who made it into the top 10. Zuma is the youngest in the competition. They will be competing against Anarzade Omar,Itumeleng Parage,Keaoleboga Nkashe,Lebogang Mahlangu, Luvé Meyer, Ndavi Nokeri,

I hope all the young females in Pietermaritzburg can get up and be bold enough to chase their dreams after this, if I could do it they certainly can too. Pearl Ntshehi and Tamsyn Jack. The Miss SA pageant is back in Gauteng, with the 2022 winner set to be crowned during Women’s Month on Saturday, August 13. Thabethe who is a final year BSc student in Dietetics and Human Nutrition at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, said Miss SA has been a dream for years and a plan was put into place to help her

prepare to get to this point. “I have had a plan in place for years working towards getting where I am right now, and seeing my dreams realised is overwhelming in the best way. “So much so that it has changed the way that I perceive myself. I’ve always thought of myself as a force to be reckoned with, but now I know that I am! And there is no better feeling that,” she said.

Luyanda Zuma, who is an international model, entrepreneur and final year bachelor of live performance student at AFDA which is a private tertiary institution, said words cannot describe how she feels at this moment, the rush of emotions have left her speechless. “I really can’t believe it , I think it’s one for the books for me because I can proudly say I’m the first and youngest to ever do it because Ayanda is just a little older than me , but it’s honestly amplify my beliefs even more that , nothing is really impossible you just need to put your mind to it and be aggressive with your dreams . “I hope all the young females in Pietermaritzburg can get up and be bold enough to chase their dreams after this , if I could do it they certainly can too.”

ambuza residents in Pietermaritzburg are questioning their safety after four people were shot in their homes in two separate incidents in the early hours of Friday. Out of the four people, three died and one survived and was taken to hospital. In the first incident, Sesethu Ntentesa (24) and her boyfriend, Simphiwe Snethemba Ndawonde, were asleep in their home when unknown men entered and shot them dead. The men also shot another person who was sleeping in another building in the same yard, but he survived and was taken to Harry Gwala Hospital. In the second incident, Nompilo Shezi (23) and her boyfriend were also asleep when one person entered the house and robbed them of two cellphones and a flat screen television. Shezi was shot and killed. News of the murders has sparked anxiety in the area. A resident who spoke to Echo said they always thought they were safe in their homes, but after these incidents they no longer feel that way. “We always thought that the criminals attack you when you are on the streets, not in your home where you are supposed to feel safe. We are concerned and this needs intervention.

f

“The law must take its course and the killers must be arrested before they go and kill other people,” she said. Another resident said: “Police need to do something because we cannot live like this. Feeling scared in your own house, no this is just not right.” Ward councillor Sbongumusa “Shota” Zuma said everyone is shocked by the incidents. He said he contacted KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Community Safety Peggy Nkonyeni to intervene. “This is a huge loss for us. What is happening in Pietermaritzburg is getting out of hand,” he said. Zuma said what was most devastating is that he was busy helping Ndawonde get his grandfather’s body back from an old age home in Nkandla for his funeral. “When I heard that he had also been shot, I did not even know what to say. I will be visiting all the families of the deceased,” he said. Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Sifiso Gwala confirmed both incidents. He said the first incident happened between 1 am and 2 am, and the second took place just after 2 am. In the second incident, the boyfriend was left unharmed. No arrests have yet been made.

Pata employees concerned about their safety LETHIWE MAKHANYA

T

he Pata Clinic in Edendale was closed Monday and Tuesday, depriving hundreds of people of much-needed healthcare. This came about after some employees downed tools while others did not pitch for work. Patients who had gone to the clinic were turned away by the security guards. The employees were said to be complaining about the clinic being short-staffed, safety issues and the health facility not having parking for their cars which forced them to park on the road. They were also complaining about the damaged fence at the back of the clinic that had not been fixed for a while. The clinic services people from KwaPata, Dambuza, Machibisa, part of Azalea, Imbali Unit J and Maqeleni areas. A source inside the clinic, who asked not to be named, said the manager of the clinic was the only one who came to the health facility to address patients about the closure. “It is so terrible because there are people who came as early as 4 am in the morning because they wanted to be at the front of the queue, but now they need to get up early again on Tuesday,” said the source. National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Un-

ion (Nehawu) regional secretary, Mazwi Ngubane, said they met with the management from the Department of Health on Monday and they promised them that they will add two more security guards and fix the fence. “On Monday a contractor went to inspect the damage of the fence and we were promised that they will fix it immediately. “When we went to check on Tuesday it was still not fixed but the two security guards were added. We then took a decision that the employees must go and report at Harry Gwala Hospital until the fence is fixed,” he said. Ngubane said on Wednesday they planned to continue with the inspection to see if it is safe for employees to go back to work. “We are not going to put our members lives in danger, that is why we want the department to attend to these issues urgently. We have reported these things before to them, but they were never attended to. “There is a lot of crime that is currently being reported in the area and it’s affecting the clinic’s employees as well. These criminals have even robbed the security guards of their cell phones at gunpoint.” Spokesperson for the KZN Department of Health Ntokozo Maphisa said, “The department is extremely concerned about this situation and is doing everything possible to restore normal operations at the facility.”

ases of business robberies in Pietermaritzburg have been increasing at an alarming rate leaving business owners very worried. Last week, two business robberies were reported. The first allegedly happened in Peter Kerchhoff Street at a shisanyama. Five armed men allegedly robbed it of cash and expensive alcohol. The second robbery allegedly took place in the afternoon at a clothing shop in the upper part of Church Street. A source said, like the shisanyama, it was also robbed by five armed men. They fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and cellphones sold at the store, and from staff members. He suspects that the same people who took part in both robberies were also involved in the other robberies in the city. According to Pietermaritzburg Business Fighting Crime (PBFC) over 30 businesses have been robbed in the city in the past weeks and the numbers were increasing as businesses were robbed daily. They said business owners were forced to spend more money on security to protect their businesses and staff. Chairperson for PBFC, Kantha Naidoo, said the robberies were getting out of control. “If it was not for private security companies assisting businesses, we would be in a worse situation. “The lack of streetlights is aggravating the problem and my members are considering put-

ting their own lights up,” said Naidoo. She said they also had an issue with the police who were slow to respond to the crime scenes. Up to three robberies a day One of the business owners, who asked not to be named, said there were days where two or three businesses would be robbed in one day. “These guys know what they are doing. They usually target the businesses in the afternoon before they close,” said the businessman. At least three businesses were robbed in the lower part of the city last week. In most cases, money was taken. Rajesh Vather of Vather Liquors in Retief Street said three men, one armed, attempted to rob his shop last week. “They acted as though they were customers but we were able to spot them. “Luckily the police were around the corner and were able arrest them. “Another shop was unfortunately robbed that same afternoon and I heard the robbers in that case fled the scene,” said Vather. He said he had upgraded his security system at the shop in view of the alarming increase in robberies in the city. He said they were very worried about the streetlights that were not working in the lower part of the CBD. Vather said business owners believed having no streetlights was making them an easy target. “It gets dark very quickly now in the afternoons and these guys usually rob the shops around that time. “As soon as they run out of the shops, it’s difficult to see them on the streets because of the

darkness. The municipality is also not taking care of the city to ensure that we are also safe. Businesses downtown are even filling in potholes on their own,” said Vather. That same week, at least three shops were robbed. Simon Haq, Bangladesh community leader who also owns a number of shops, said they have been reporting these crimes to the police, but arrests are not being made. He said they are planning to march to the local police station and City Hall to call for urgent intervention regarding ongoing business crimes. “Things are bad. Since it is winter, the guys now have to close their shops early, just after 5 pm because that’s when these criminals come in. “Not a single day passes without getting reports on our WhatsApp group about robberies in one of our shops. “The town is now not a good space for any businesses to trade. “The sad part is that not all our tuck shops and small shops can afford armed security guards, and we can’t defend ourselves because these guys are very dangerous and armed,” said Haq. A shop owner who spoke to Echo said in the space of two weeks, he has been robbed three times by different groups of criminals. “It’s unfair and we really need help from the police and security [services]. “These criminals are making life difficult for us and we will end up closing shops because we won’t be able to afford the rents,” said a shop owner. Police did not respond by the time of publication.

Stray dogs, cats in SA make up 4,1 mln out of 14,9 mln Out of the 14,9 million dogs and cats in South Africa, 4,1 million are considered strays.

This is according to the State of Pet Homelessness Index, compiled by pet-food maker

Mars Petcare, which measures 10 countries’ efforts to deal with dogs and cats which live on the street, are considered strays, or live in shelters. Out of a possible 10, SA scored four. This places it behind China’s 4,8, but way ahead of lastplaced India with a score of 2,8. Germany came in tops at 8,6. Though about 27% of SA’s dogs and cats (or companion animals) live on the streets, it does not mean they don’t have a home. One of the organisations that provided information for the index, WellBeing International (WBI), makes the point that many of these animals are informally taken care of. “While there are an estimated 300 million ‘homeless’ dogs [globally], the term is surprisingly challenging to define,” WBI says. This is because many dogs living on the street “may be claimed by a particular household.” WBI notes that one study found that more than 90% of dogs on the street in two Balinese villages and in two South African townships were claimed by specific households. But just because there are households feeding animals living on their streets, it does not mean all their needs are taken care of. WBI points out that these dogs have “rarely received any treatment for disease or injury”. This is why, despite being claimed by some households, it defines homeless dogs as those spending most of their time on the streets and receiving little to no healthcare. This lack of healthcare for animals was one of the reasons dragging down SA’s ranging on the State of Pet Homelessness Index. South Africa scored poorly in the index’s measure of “All Pets Cared For” because there was some hesitancy in taking pets to the vet, which is viewed as too expensive. “49% of those who do not take their pet to the vet list cost as a key reason for this, compared to the average of 28% [for all 10 countries].” Another hindrance to adoption is concern by South Africans over whether pets will be allowed to live with them. “70% of South Africa’s general population believe it is difficult to own a dog when living in an apartment compared to a global average of 60%. Additionally, 51% agree it is difficult to own a cat in an apartment compared to the global average of 45%.” On the plus side, SA’s above-average sterilisation rate drives up its overall “All Pets Wanted” score. Another plus is the openness of South Africans to adopt from a shelter, with 77% indicating that they would consider adopting from a shelter versus a global average of 65% — Business Insider SA.

Panorama school left in the dark after disconnection LETHIWE MAKHANYA

P

anorama Primary School teachers have been forced to use their cellphone flashlights and to bring battery operated LED lights from home to use in the classrooms. This is after Msunduzi Municipality disconnected their electricity supply due to non-payment of just over R250 000. School governing body chairperson, Matla Mokoena, confirmed with Echo last week, that the school owes the municipality money. He said the school is currently having financial problems and they engaged with the municipality and made arrangements

on how they intend paying their debt. “We have even asked the municipality for a downgrade to prepaid but they (municipality) have not done that. We even paid the fees to do a downgrade, but nothing [has happened]. “For the past two or three months we have been talking about prepaid and asking what is happening with the process but no one from the municipality is giving us a direct answer,” he said. Mokoena said they are worried about this because pupils, teachers and the school are being disadvantaged, especially during this time where they are busy with June examination preparations.

On Tuesday, parents and school governing body members were supposed to have a meeting with the Department of Education, but no one from the department pitched up for the meeting. The meeting was supposed to be a platform to discuss a way forward regarding the issues that the school faces. Mokoena said that since no one from the department had come to the meeting the parents will start doing a sit-in at the school until the department comes to meet with them. “If they do not do that, we will be forced to go straight to the head of the department,” he said. He said the situation is forcing the

school to spend money for photocopying and printing. “The school currently has about R18 000 and now they have to use that money [to print copies].” KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said the education inspector did not pitch up for the meeting because it was at short notice and they were only told about it on Monday night. “About two weeks back, the district ordered all the schools to provide records of their electricity bills and their challenges and all the schools submitted these except for Panorama. The district is not even aware of the issues they are facing since they did not

submit anything,” he said. Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Ntobeko Ngcobo said, “The municipality is implementing credit control measures and disconnecting services for accounts that are in arrears.” She said the school is one of many schools that owes the municipality. “In order for the municipality to continue providing services to the community of Msunduzi the credit control measures have to be enforced. “Consumers are urged to ensure that their accounts are up to date to avoid disconnections and in instances where there are arrangements in place they must honour those arrangements,” she said.

EFF Student Command threaten to strike in PMB LETHIWE MAKHANYA

JUST FOR DAD!

Angry Economic Freedom Fighters Students Command (EFFSC) members from the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg campus marched to Legislature last Thursday, where they submitted a memorandum of demands. The list of their demands included reinstating all dismissed workers for protesting, better working conditions, medical aid benefits, better working equipment for workers, more buses to transport students as well as better residences.

The students marched from Alan Paton Road to Langalibalele Street. They said that are disappointed that the university continues to victimise, intimidate and “brutally” treat them. Andisa Mhlongo, who is the EFFSC branch chairperson at the campus, told Echo that they decided to go to the Legislature for it to intervene. She said the major issue is that the university wants to suspend about 60 workers who engaged in a protest. “We have tried to resolve these issues with the university with no luck, that is why we are looking for intervention.

“We are tired and we are angry,” she said. The students gave the Legislature three weeks to respond to their demands. They threatened that if they do not get a response after three weeks they will bring the CBD to a standstill. The memorandum was accepted by the chief financial officer of the KZN Legislature, Mohlomi Nkopane. He said the speaker of the Legislature is currently out of the country on legislature work. “I will make sure that the speaker gets the memorandum and hope you will get a response in time,” he told the students.

R350 ONLY THROUGH BABA NOWA CHANGED MY LIFE COMPLETELY It is true. If you have suffered enough but one day, your life will change completely. Now its time to see Miracles through Baba Nowa. My name is Mpho, I stay in Newcastle, KZN. I am here to testify about what Baba Nowa did in my life. He helped me with financial problems, since I have tried many doctors and read many Testimonies but never got help, when I read the testimony of Mr Mtuli that Baba Nowa had changed his life with only R350. I decided to contact him for my problems, He asked me to choose between lucky wallet and the short boys to put money in my account or Blackstone to bring Money in my house. I then chose the short boys to put money in my account. I was shocked after I waited a few hours to receive a notification from the bank That the money I chose was deposited into my bank account. My sister after seeing this, she also called and chose lucky wallet, since she was far she gave him her address then he sent the parcel to her via SPEED SERVICE COURIERS and she got it the same day. She got a lot of money from that wallet and paid him his percentage. Thank you Baba Nowa for changing my life. My family and friends I introduced to you Baba are now happy.

Cosatu plans peaceful protest against rising costs of living SAKHISENI NXUMALO

C

ongress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in KwaZulu-Natal will embark on a protest against fuel hikes and the high cost of living on Friday. The union said the fuel hike alone has had a devastating impact on many people in the country. It said they will also be picketing about

escalating youth unemployment and poverty, and low wages. Cosatu KZN provincial secretary Edwin Mkhize said looking at the impact this was having on people’s lives, they could not pretend everything was normal. “We do need to show our anger and concern at some point and this protest demonstration speaks exactly to that. We want the government to urgently in-

Rising food, fuel prices a consumer conundrum Food prices have soared in the past few months and shopping around may not always be the best solution when the cheaper alternative is at a store far away from home. South Africans are juggling rising food and fuel prices, which is a tough act. But for some, cutting down on staple grocery items is not an option, despite the cost increases. City Press visited six grocery stores to compare the prices of staple items. No shop came in as the cheapest overall. At R32, the price of 750ml dishwashing liquid was the same at all shops while the cost of a 2l bottle of cooking oil differed widely. There was a R37 price difference between the cheapest shop, Pick n Pay, and the most expensive, Spar at R147. The average cost of the household food basket has increased by R66,96, which is

1,5% — from R4 542,93 in April to R4 609,89 last month. That’s according to the Household Affordability Index (https://bit.ly/3zqBobW) of the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD). The biggest shocker for most is the skyrocketing price of cooking oil, which has risen by 50% in the past year, according to PMBEJD. Family favourites are hard to ditch when doing the monthly groceries, said Clement Tlhoaele from Mabopane in Gauteng. “Food prices right now are terrible. They are hitting our pockets very hard. There’s very little we can do about it. It is not easy to cut down on things you are used to enjoying,” the pensioner added. — City Press.

tervene and work with speed to address the issues.” Mkhize said the union is planning to have the main protest demonstration in Durban, where they will meet in the morning at Curries Fountain Stadium. He said they will then form a motorcade which will end with a picket at the Marine Building in Durban city centre. Mkhize said the protest would not be vio-

lent as they are only looking to have placards. He said they have also roped in other organisations and unions from different spheres across the province to be part of the mass protest. “We are busy now having engagements and finalising our plans. We are still working to identify more organisations to be roped in,” said Mkhize.

Missing flood victims CHRIS NDALISO

T

he KwaZulu-Natal government wants the missing flood victims presumed dead, if there are no prospects of finding them alive. The search is still on for the victims, but the province is engaging the justice department to facilitate the presumption of death process. KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala said even though the search and rescue teams were still on the ground, the presumption of death would be used as the last resort to assist families to find closure. “Sadly, we still have 23 unidentified bodies with DNAs not collected. Eighty-seven people are still reported missing with 6 895 being homeless and 50 injured,” he said. He said the SANDF withdrawal would happen in phases, but the specialised teams, including engineers, would remain on site. Zikalala was addressing the media after his visit to displaced families, some of whom have since been placed into temporary housing structures. So far 206 temporary residential units have been built with the number of families to be accommodated being more than 4 396. It has been two months now since the province was hit by the April floods which left housing and infrastructure networks damaged to the value of R25 billion. “We have learnt through a joint study by the eThekwini Metro and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research that 1,3 million people live within the flood line in eThekwini. “We are also told that 33,2% or more than a quarter of all dwellings in the city are informal structures and this excludes rural dwellings. This poses a major challenge to the recovery programme and calls for a longterm approach which will protect our communities

from such emergencies in future,” said Zikalala. He further confirmed that there was no outstanding application from the province either for short-term humanitarian support or long-term reconstruction. He said all the applications were submitted to the national government via the National Disaster Management Centre on May 9 and 15 for all damaged infrastructure in KZN. “In summary, our provincial Disaster Management Centre has made an application to the National Disaster Management Centre for short-term humanitarian relief support to the tune of R1 billion. “Further to this the province has made a request for R12,656 billion for the municipal response and R5,157 billion for the provincial response. This brings the total applied for to R17,813 billion for KZN sector departments and municipal damages,” said Zikalala. He said the province received acknowledgements to this effect, with independent verification of its application having been done by the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) and the Department of Water and Sanitation specialist engineers. Current indications are that the floods have affected a total of 85 280 people, with 461 fatalities. “In all, a total of 27 069 households were affected with 8 584 houses totally destroyed and 13 536 partially destroyed. “Even though the restoration of water and electricity has reached over 90% overall, there remains a number of hotspots in the province,” he said. He said in iLembe, KwaDukuza water had no supply to the power generation plant due to plant repairs and this was affecting Shakaville and Lindelani. Damage to KZN transport infrastructure from the recent floods amounted to R6 billion, including the M4 and R102.

The Pietermaritzburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is still awaiting payments from Msunduzi Municipality. The managing committee said Msunduzi owed them over R1,3 million in pound fees. They said the municipality last paid them in July 2021. In a statement, the Pietermaritzburg SPCA managing committee said there had been no communication received by the organisation from Msunduzi, but they were given an additional email address to forward invoices to. However, they said no one was responding or acknowledging their emails. In February, Msunduzi told The Witness that the SPCA’s payment was being processed, but the managing committee said it had not received the funds. They said they were depending on public donations to survive. “With no payment from the Msunduzi Municipality public money is being spent to provide a service which

is the responsibility of the municipality, therefore crucial pro-active work to assist animals in need is limited, due to a lack of funds. “If an inspector is available, we will collect confined strays, however, injured and sick strays, as well as young, compromised animals are treated as emergencies,” said the managing committee. They said the generosity of the public had been critical for them to perform a vital service to the communities of Pietermaritzburg and surrounds. The committee added that with the current financial crises faced by many residents, the donations had also dropped. Msunduzi spokesperson, Ntobeko Mkhize said the municipality was in communication with the SPCA to resolve this matter. “A meeting had taken place to discuss contractual matters which cannot be discussed in the media space. However, the matter is receiving attention and will be resolved,” said Mkhize. The municipality’s financial year for 2021/2022 ends on June 30.

As children are spending more and more time glued to their screens, parents are warned of the effects of exposure to harmful and inappropriate content. Rachelle Best, a mother and founder of the FYI: Play it safe app, is hosting online webinars to offer parents an opportunity to dive deep into the dangers lurking on their children’s mobile devices and how they can actively monitor screen time without being invasive. Best said with children being continually online, more so as many schools were forced to go online during the pandemic, it means they are exposed to some level of risk. “Technology changes every single day, actually more than once a day. As soon as we think we’ve figured out how an app that our children are using works, there’s a new one or they release a feature like self-destructing or disappearing messages. Parents can’t keep up, it’s a full-time job. “Children are smart, smarter than their parents. They can find loopholes with parental controls quicker than we can implement them,” she said. According to research from Common Sense Media, Best said screen time for tweens, aged eight to 12 years old, has increased in the last two years to five hours and 33 minutes a day. Best said there are online predators waiting to gain

the trust of your child. She said she recently spoke to the mother of a 12year-old girl who was being harassed by a strange man with WhatsApp calls. She said it started from a spelling vocabulary online game. The mother hadn’t realised that the app also paired her daughter with strangers to play the game with. “After being paired with the same person several times, the person started messaging her on the app and when she got comfortable, she shared her number with him and gave him her real name and where she goes to school. “This happens everywhere. We have to teach our children that people are not always who they say they are on the internet,” she said. She urged parents to use parental restrictions, implement screen time and learn to communicate better with their children so that parents are the go-to people if their children become uncomfortable online. Best explained that the FYI Play it safe app is a monitoring mechanism that children need to consent to, that runs in the background of your child’s device and monitors what’s going on, on the screens of their devices. THANK YOU KING MOSES

Thumela izaziso nezithombe zakho ku lethiwe.makhanya@media24.com. Send your notices to Echo or e-mail photos to lethiwe.makhanya@media24.com

I have tried different people claiming to be Herbalist, Prophets, Doctors, Chiefs, Pastors and I never got what I wanted. All I got was empty promises. I lost my big house, businesses and cars, but the day I met the Great KING MOSES is the day my life changed from poverty to riches, I regained my businesses, big house and even more cars. As I’m testifying right now, I’m a very successful businesswoman in KwaZulu-Natal. My name is Veronica from Umhlanga, Durban and my phone number is 0712277761. I saw the testimonials of KING MOSES in different newspapers and people recommending him. I called KING MOSES if I could also be helped and he gave me 4 options. 1- ABALAKA TO PUT MONEY IN MY BANK ACCOUNT WITHIN 30MINS. 2- CHIMBUNGA TO BRING MONEY IN MY HOUSE WITHIN 1 HOUR. 3- SPECIAL WALLET TO GET MONEY EVERYDAY. 4- TO WIN LOTTO, SPORTS BETS OR CASINO. I chose the ABALAKA to put money in my account and within 30mins, after following his instructions I was shocked to see R5million in my account and I started to use the money same time without any problems. After my success My husband chose CHIMBUNGA and he got R10million in the house within 1hour. My mother asked me about our riches and I told her about KING MOSES and she didn’t hesitate to phone him, she chose the SPECIAL WALLET and now she gets R50 000 every day. We paid DR KING MOSES 10% of the money.

SWEETWATERS TEAM INVITED to the United States LETHIWE MAKHANYA >>lethiwe.makhanya@media24.com

T

he Nxamalala Fast XI Football from Sweetwaters is set to fly the South African flag high in the United States of America after receiving an invite to participate at the USA Cup. However, that might not happen as the team is still struggling to get sponsorship.

The USA Cup is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and is held each summer at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The under 17 team of 18 members and four officials are supposed to leave the country on July 8 and come back on July 18. The tournament will take place from July 12 to July 16.

The club’s chairperson Wise Hlongwane told Echo that for a team that is coming from a rural area it is a huge opportunity and they feel very honoured to have received an invite to participate in this cup. But they are concerned about going since they have been trying to get a sponsorship with no luck. “Some of the areas that we have approached for assistance have turned

us down. “The USA has offered to pay for our accommodation and flights. “We only need someone who is going to help us with uniform like tracksuits so that the children can look presentable when they go there,” he said. Hlongwane said going to the USA will also help the players as individuals to showcase their talent and hopefully get people who would like to take

them and play for bigger teams. “We all know that not all children are meant to be academics others are just meant to use their talent to make a living and opportunities like this will assist them a lot. “I do not even know what I will say if we end up not going, that will break my heart and the players’ heart. I am begging anyone who can assist to please do so,” added Hlongwane.

Added to that five trophies, he registered two third-place finishes at the Fifa Club World Cup. Mosimane was indeed a success in the north of Africa. But what’s next? He must have something up his sleeve. ‘That will never happen’ Mosimane has collected 16 major titles in 10 years, an incredible statistic and he is the most decorated African coach. The former SuperSport coach can now say he conquered Africa, only falling short of winning the Egyptian Premier League during his stay in Cairo. He celebrates his 58th birthday next month and might want to experience a different culture before calling time on what has been a successful managerial career. Mosimane has already given his thoughts on trying his hand at coaching in Europe, where murmurs of his name were linked to a French Ligue 1 team. “Those are fairy tale stories. I know, in life, never say never, but it would never happen,” Mosimane told the South Africa Football Journalists Association (Safja). “You want to tell me that out of all the black coaches in Europe; nobody can coach? Are you serious? All these guys who won Champions Leagues. It’s unbelievable. The Abedi Peles, Toney Yeboahs, Dwight Yorkes, Andy Coles, John Barnes ... big names. But where are they? None of them can coach? “I’m okay with Europe. Let me stay on the continent and probably [in] the Gulf region.”

The Persian Gulf region, as he mentioned, could be his next destination and Mosimane’s agent — his wife Moira Tlhagale — may have contracts piled up on their kitchen table already. The coach is already being linked with clubs in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Several SA teams looking for coaches Back home, in South Africa, several teams are without a head coach. Maritzburg United and Marumo Gallants have recently announced the departure of their respective coaches but with all due respect, Mosimane will certainly not fancy such a gig. The one vacancy that may interest him is at Orlando Pirates. The Buccaneers have been without a head coach since August 2021, when Josef Zinnbauer quit, and the club pitted Fadlu Davids and Mandla Ncikazi together for months to turn around the club’s fortunes. Pirates let Davids go last week after his contract was not renewed, and Ncikazi now waits to see what the club will do next. It will be brilliant if Pirates table Mosimane an offer and tests the waters, even though the coach has declared his love for the club’s rivals, Kaizer Chiefs. Not only will Mosimane’s return be welcomed by the club’s fans, his presence will also give the Premier Soccer League an immediate lift. — Sport24.

What after Al Ahly? Twenty months and five major trophies later, Pitso Mosimane didn’t do too bad during his tenure at Al Ahly, right? He “delivered” — a word that appeared no less than three times in his heartfelt letter to the Al Ahly faithful after he shockingly parted ways with the club on Monday. Arriving in Cairo, Egypt, in October 2020 after signing a two-year deal with Al Ahly, the club hierarchy’s mandate was clear for Mosimane. He had just written his name in the record books, securing his fifth Premier Soccer League title — the most any coach had won — completing the domestic treble with Mamelodi Sundowns. It was his 11th major trophy with Masandawana, where he spent close to eight years of his coaching life before Al Ahly’s big call. He conquered the south of Africa, and Al Ahly yearned for his magic touch so he could bring the same kind of success to the north, specifically to the Red Devils. René Weiler, Mosimane’s predecessor at Al Ahly, only lasted 11 months, despite winning the 2019/20 Egyptian Premier League crown. But Weiler was sent packing before he could even celebrate the title win, as Mosimane’s services had already been acquired. In under two months, Jingles, as he is affectionately known, bagged two major titles for the Red Devils. The delay in the 2019/20 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, allowed Mosimane to see out the remainder of the Caf Champi-

f

ons League and the Egypt Cup. Not only did he win the Champions League, he did so against Al Ahly’s arch-rivals, Zamalek, which was the cherry on top. Al Ahly had not won the Champions League in seven years, last ousting Orlando Pirates in the 2013 final. The Red Devils clawed their way to two consecutive finals in 2017 against Wydad AC (ironically) and in 2018, against Esperance de Tunis, but ultimately failed in their quest. Nine days after Mosimane claimed his second African title, he added the Egypt Cup to his already illustrious list of silverware wins. In 2021, it only got better, but with a few hiccups along the way. Former star players for the club began urging the Al Ahly hierarchy to sack the coach, but Mosimane kept his head down and continued with his work diligently. There was one incident that stood out among everything else: when he faced former employers Sundowns in a Champions League quarter-final. Upon his return home to the stadium for the second leg, Mosimane did not get the warmest of welcomes. A group of Sundowns fans hurled insults at him, held up placards and attempted to slow down the Al Ahly team bus on its way to the stadium. ‘A little bit emotional’ “I was a little bit emotional when I saw the placards outside the stadium. All of those people swearing at me and swearing at my

Pitso Mosimane PHOTO: GETTY

mother,” Mosimane said. “I asked myself what else should I have done for this team to gain their respect, but it’s football and I understand.” To win his third champions league winner’s medal, he downed the team he supported as a child, Kaizer Chiefs, in the final, but a month before that match, he had won the delayed CAF Super Cup against RS Berkane. Seven months later, he snatched the Super Cup again, this time against Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca, before missing out on the Egyptian Premier League by four points to Zamalek.
