he Department of Basic Education (DBE) should have considered delaying reopening schools because of the recent unrest in KwaZulu-Natal. This was the sentiment of University of KwaZulu-Natal’s School of Education Professor, Labby Ramrathan, in his response to schools reopening. “The recent unrest in the province could lead to a spike in infections. Yes, there are worries of learning being disturbed, but delaying this until Covid-19 cases show a sign of decreasing is advisable,” he said. National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) provincial CEO, Thirona Moodley, told the Fever that they don’t understand the logic behind primary school pupils going back to school in full capacity from August 2. When the Covid-19 pandemic started, schools had rotational timetables to avoid full capacity in schools. Moodley said they have spoken out about not being convinced that this is the safest thing to do. “By August 2, all primary school pupils and pupils in special schools must return to school everyday using the additional timetable so it

means we are going to have a 100% capacity everyday in primary schools. “We believe that there will be no social distancing. We know that one of the pillars of Covid19 is social distancing,” she said. She added that the DBE said it had consulted with experts and scientists who said “it is not important”. “We are very unhappy with who these experts are and what they are saying because we have always known that social distancing is a must but the department of education is not considering social distancing and that is making our teachers extremely nervous,” she said. Moodley added that Naptosa appealed to government to fast-track any kind of programme for the 139 schools which were looted, vandalised and burnt during the violent protests, to ensure that schools don’t have any interruptions in terms of the learning. She said they were worried that some pupils will not be able to go back to school next week because of the number of schools that were affected by the recent unrest. “What needed to be done, had to be done this week. Repair teams should have started repairing schools by now and mobile classrooms should also be delivered by now,” she said. Moodley said the union’s concerns also in-
cluded teachers being vaccinated and pupils not receiving the jab. She explained that it is not about teachers infecting pupils, it is about pupils infecting each other and taking infections back home. “We have been told that the delta variant is quite common in the younger age groups and is mostly infecting young people.” She said when the Department consulted on the matter, the union gave its conditional support. “But those conditions have not been met and the department has gone ahead and called back pupils, some in full capacity,” she said. South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) KZN secretary, Nomarashiya Caluza, said the union patiently waited for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address over the weekend which they hoped would give them a clear indication of what is to be done. “Because a number of our schools were destroyed in the violent protests, what is important now, is for the department to assist these schools by ensuring that stolen items are returned, like the school nutrition programme equipment.
