ISGRUNTLED Ugu District Municipality workers marched to Ugu main office yesterday (Wednesday, November 25) demanding the reinstatement of the 127 employees who were allegedly dismissed through text messages earlier this year.

The workers, belonging to the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu), were accompanied by the South African Communist Party (SACP) and Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in the province.

According to Ugu Samwu chairperson, Mthandeni Ngcobo, their demands include

the withdrawal of all false charges against shop stewards, implementation of the Cogta forensic report against municipal manager Dhanpalan Devaraj (DD) Naidoo and Ugu corporate services general manager Vela Mazibuko.

“We demand that a thorough and detailed investigation report be conducted on the municipality because what was presented in the Cogta forensic report is only half of what is happening in the municipality,” said Ngcobo, adding that they demand the supply of adequate, consistent and constant of water to Ugu residents.

KZN SACP first deputy secretary Msizi Nhlapho said Ugu officials must also do away with the notion of allegedly asking qualified

applicants for sexual favours in order to receive employment, promotions and benefits.

Furthermore, KZN Cosatu chairperson Sikhumbuzo Mdlalose said if the municipality fails to reinstate all dismissed workers before December 1, they will bring unions from other provinces to help close down the municipality until their demands are met.

Angry employees who were chanting ‘run DD run’ and ‘run Vela run’, also said KZN premier Sihle Zikalala must be part of the team assigned to dismiss corrupt officials within Ugu. Ugu mayor Sizwe Ngcobo, who accepted and signed the memorandum, said he will look at it and give the union a response soon.

OUTH Coasters have raised concerns on alleged corruption at the Port Shepstone Post Office where the office’s employees are allegedly asking the public for R50 in order to receive their social distress relief grant of R350.

A source, who wished to remain anonymous, said after queueing outside the Post Office, she was told her R350 is not yet available and as she was leaving, an employee of the Post Office approached her and said the source can get her R350 if she gives the employee her identity number but the employee will have to take R50.

“Because I needed the money, I agreed. I then received my R300. After speaking to a few people, I found out that this has been going on for months,” she said.

Another source said they refused to give an employee R50 and he was told his grant is still not yet available.

“It is very sad to watch people especially old people being scammed in this way. The matter was reported to the SAPS in Port Shepstone, however, nothing was done about it,” said the source, adding that they did not report the matter to the Post Office’s management because

Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said in their records no case was opened in regards to this matter, but he will check in their system once it has been updated.

Port Shepstone Post Office supervisor, Sydney Mjali said he was not aware of this.

“This is shocking and should not be happening. I will inform our manager Goodman Mkhungo about this and also address the staff.

We will follow up on this,”said Mjali, adding that the public is encouraged to ask employees for their names and report such crimes to management as soon as possible.

No more cheques from January 2021 FROM January 2021, cheques will no longer be accepted as a form of payment in SA, marking the demise of what used to be the most popular non-cash payment method.

In a statement on Wednesday, the South African Reserve Bank, Financial Sector Conduct Authority, Payments Association of South Africa and the Banking Association South Africa, said the issuing and the acceptance or collection of cheques will cease, effective from December 31, 2020.

This decision was taken due to numerous

challenges associated with the usage of cheques, said the banking authorities.

These include lengthy processing periods, fraud emanating from the issuing of cheques and limited knowledge and protection for the consumer.

Other factors such as the restricted acceptance of cheques, their declining usage, an ageing interbank cheque processing infrastructure as well as the impacts of the coronavirus informed the decisions.

“Affected stakeholders are therefore re-

quested not to write/draw.

They are encouraged to approach their banks to be offered alternative electronic payment methods or to direct any queries they may have related to the process of termination of the usage of cheques,” the joint statement said.

Earlier this year, SA’s banking authorities moved to significantly reduce the cheque limit from R500 000 to R50 000 to protect consumers.

A Ugu caucus leader Leonard Ngcobo said they are still calling on Cogta MEC Sipho Hlomuka to place Ugu under administration with immediate effect and assign a capable and competent administrator.

This comes after Ugu District Municipality suspended its municipal manager, Dhanpalan Devaraj Naidoo during a special council meeting on Monday.

According to Ugu spokesperson France Zama, the decision was taken after careful consideration of the representations made by Naidoo, after he was recently served with a notice of an intention to suspend.

“The suspension of the municipal manager serves as part of the protracted meas-

ures being undertaken by the municipality to diligently process all the matters contained in the Section 106 report, which was conducted by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs,” said Zama, adding that Ugu council has appointed Sibusiso Sithole as acting municipal manager until further notice.

DA’s Ngcobo said although the call to suspend is a good one, it was long overdue.

“The DA has been the only party to call for a forensic investigation into Ugu’s financial management since 2016.

“This has resulted in the collapse of the provision of water and sanitation to businesses and residents.”

Ngcobo said that all those who are implicated in wrongdoing, who are no longer employed by the municipality, must also face the full might of the law.

Furthermore, Ngcobo said they call for the immediate termination of contractors that are implicated in the forensic report.

“Those contractors must be compelled to pay back the money for the tenders that were fraudulently awarded.

We reiterate our call to Cogta to place Ugu under administration with immediate effect,” said Ngcobo, adding that the acting municipal manager must review the management decision to discontinue water provision to innocent people and clean up the mess in the billing system before taking any action.

Cogta MEC Sipho Hlomuka said Ugu is still going to do more than the suspension of its municipal manager.

“The municipality needs to implement all the recommendations made in that forensic report,” said Hlomuka.

Police to arrest third suspect for burglary TWO suspects were recently arrested following a house robbery in Woodgrange.

According to Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, a couple was awoken in the early hours of Sunday, November 22, to unknown voices in their Woodgrange home and locked themselves in the bedroom for safety.

“The family contacted a security company. Three suspects had made off with household property, how-

ever police were alerted and members of SAPS K9 made an arrest of two suspects and recovered the stolen property,” said Mpinge, adding that police are expecting to arrest the third suspect soon.

“The accused, aged 23 and 25, were charged with housebreaking and theft. They appeared in the Umzumbe Magistrate’s Court on Monday, November 23.

The case has been remanded to a late date for further investigation,” said Mpinge.

Dladla strongly believes in divine intervention and she is a go-getter. She believes that women should be able to stand up for themselves, be independent and chase her dreams.

The official launch of the Dubane TV channel will be launched in December 5 at Eyadini in uMlazi.

In her early days around the time she was six years old, her mother has always

told her how much she enjoyed singing, and whenever she had a chance to say something, she never let that opportunity pass her even though she was in creche back then.

When she was around the age of nine years, she realised that her communication skills were great when she participated in school dramas and having courage to speak and sing at the school assemblies.

She actively participated at being a MC at local events, where she would get invites of which her peers really believed in her. In 2018 she worked herself to get a slot on Ugu Youth Radio.

She is currently a presenter at Dubane TV channel in which she earned the spot amongst other presenters she went up against to achieve the spot.

OUTH Coast resident candidate attorney Lwazi Gwacela fears that his admission as an attorney could be compromised by a delay by Home Affairs in correcting his name in his identity book.

Gwacela, who is based in Pietermaritzburg, has written to Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi explaining how the Port Shepstone Home Affairs office failed to alter his name in his ID book, and said the delay in approving his application for amendment of personal particulars will result in the high court declining his admission as an attorney because of the incorrect name in his ID. His identity document reflects his name as Andrew Kwazi Gwacela.

In his letter, Gwacela explained to Motsoaledi that he sent his first application in December 2019 and the second application in July 2020.

“I was informed the process takes three to six months before being finalised, but it is still not approved.

“When I arrived in Port Shepstone to enquire, I was told that my application was received in Pretoria on January 7, 2020, meaning the application was lost, so I did the second application as advised,” said Gwacela, adding that from September 16 until now, the application still has not been finalised.

Furthermore, Gwacela told Motsoaledi that because he is highly inconvenienced by these unwarranted delays, he will be seeking legal advice for a possible high court application with a cost order against the department and the responsi-

Port Shepstone Home Affairs supervisor Rudolph Gous said: “I believe that we are not co-operating correctly in resolving this case.

“I did not know about the letter to the minister but we will follow up on this application and update the applicant,” said Qoza.

Man gunned down in Gamalakhe FEVER REPORTER GAMALAKHE residents said they no longer regard the township as safe, following a shooting which occurred last Friday, November 20, near the KwaMboyisa bus stop in Gamalakhe.

According to Margate police spokesperson, Sergeant Sibu Ncane Gamalakhe, SAPS received a complaint of murder on at 7.45pm last Friday.

“The murder occurred at Ray Nkonyeni Road near Mboyisa bus stop in Gamalakhe. It is alleged that a 40-year-old man was [returning] from work when he stopped at his gate.

“As soon as he came out of his vehicle to open the gate to his house. He was shot three times in the back by an unknown suspect,” said Ncane,

adding that the man died before the police arrived.

“The body was taken to a government mortuary for post mortem examination. Gamalakhe detectives are investigating a case of murder and no arrests have been made yet,” said Ncane.

A resident, who preferred not to be named, said the gun shots felt like they were being shot at his house.

“After the [shooting] stopped, I went outside to see what was happening. I saw Sanele Mboyisa’s car parked on the drive way and I thought he was also trying to see what happened,” he said, adding that he was shocked to find out from the other neighbours that it was Mboyisa who was shot and killed. “We are really not safe in this township,” said the source.

WITH the end of year approaching and many African families planning get-togethers, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is urging countries to be on high alert for a possible surge in Covid-19 cases. This comes as after 19 countries in Africa reported a rise in cases since early October.

Unlike the first wave of cases, which was triggered by hotspots in southern Africa, the latest increase is driven by the north African region, where temperatures are beginning to fall.

In the 47 countries in the WHO African Region, 19 countries have reported more than a 20% increase in new cases in the past 28-days compared

with the previous four weeks.

There have also been increased reports of health worker infections and deaths, particularly among more experienced health staff.

“As we near the time of year when people get on the move to spend their holidays together, there is a bigger risk of Covid-19 transmission,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa.

“New clusters of cases can emerge in places that have so far been unaffected as people travel or gather for festivities.

ZN Cogta MEC Sipho Hlomuka officially opened the R14 million Ugu Fire and Rescue Centre in Port Shepstone on Tuesday, and urged residents across the province to be vigilant of harsh weather conditions that may pose a threat to human lives.

The MEC said the launch is a key milestone in the province’s efforts to mitigate the impact of disasters by assisting municipalities.

Futhermore Hlomuka said the newly-built centre will house fire and rescue teams to support all municipalities under the Ugu district.

Vaccinate pets to curb rabies spread

RESIDENTS on the South Coast are urged to have all pets vaccinated amidst a spike in reported rabies cases recently.

According to Nicky Koekemoer of 4 Paws and a Tale Rescue, there have been multiple cases of dogs contracting rabies in the Scottburgh area, as well as one case where a person had been bitten by a rabid dog in the street.

“We’ve found that, with the recent hard lockdown, people who would usually have vaccinated their animals have put it off, and the surge in local rabies cases now puts pets - and their owners - at risk,” said Koekemoer.

“In the Amanzimtoti area there have been three confirmed cases the past two weeks, and we know of a rabid dog in the Umkomaas area, so it is absolutely vital that every pet owner takes responsibility and gets their animals vaccinated; there is no cure for rabies, it is fatal.”

She said that pet owners should also ensure all pets are kept away from on street-facing locations where they’re more vulnerable to passing dogs, and should ensure the property is secure so that there is no

chance of wandering dogs entering or exposure to potentially rabid dogs.

Rabies is a highly contagious, fatal and viral disease that can be transmitted through the saliva of dogs to other animals, as well as humans. Infected people will be hyperactive, excitable and may display erratic behaviour.

Another form of rabies results in infected people slowly become paralized who eventually slip into a coma, and die.

Some of the indicators of rabies in dogs include lethargy, fever, excessive drooling, sensitivity and erratic behaviour “If you’ve been bitten by a suspected rabid dog, you must thoroughly clean the wound with disinfectant and seek urgent medical care. You will then be given a series of injections to stop infection, including rabies vaccine to prevent you from getting the disease. If left untreated, the rabies infection will be established. Rabies is an incurable disease and, left untreated, is fatal,” said Koekemoer, adding that vaccination of pets is the only way to prevent the spread of rabies. – Supplied.

OUNDER of the Ugu Fashion Wine and Music Experience (UFWME) Nkosingiphile Majola is taking this year’s event to Pietermaritzburg.

The UFWME will be held on December 5 at the Imperial Hotel in Pietermaritzburg.

Majola said taking the event to the Midlands is part of their strategy to increase their footprint.

“The UFWME is a coastal premium lifestyle event, as the name suggests, however this year with a lot of uncertainty and changes brought by 2020, we thought of taking the experience to the Midlands. In the following years the event will however be hosted along the coast,” said Majola.

Artists billed to perform at the UFWME include South Coast’s very own Khokho Madlala. The event will also host artists like Zawazi Yamungu, Harrison Mkhize and Andiswa Maduna.

“I used to attend a lot of lifestyle events and I was really fascinated by how carefully curated they make these events. Looking at my contacts in the entertainment industry, I figured I can also successfully host an event,” said Majola, adding that the idea of UFWME naturally came to him.

“Everyone that knows me knows I love fashion and music is a part of me that can never be separated. I die for wine, so I fused the three things that I think most people in the working class enjoy and would probably enjoy learning more about,” said Majola.

Furthermore, Majola said their aim is to provide a platform for upcoming artists and fashion designers. “[The event] also provides an exclusive experience for tourists during the festive season and in addition, become the drivers of local economic development in and around our host city. This year we are taking it up a notch with a well improved world class service and being amidst media personalities that are most loved in the entertainment industry,” said Majola.

Also, the coordinator said the four local schools meet on Saturdays at the Izingolweni Education Centre for the programme.

“The training shall culminate into a inter-provincial virtual debate contest.

Diverse topics are debated during the training including issues of social ills related to drug and alcohol abuse, gangsterism, rape, bullying, violence and other topics that are prevalent in schools,” said Phiyega.

At the end of the programme, pupils will be awarded for participating in the programme.

REWARDING DRIVER EXCELLENCE through Santaco Best Driver of the Year

N

O matter the viewpoint regarding taxi drivers in South Africa, drivers have a huge part to play given their contributions to the economy, and in transporting so many South Africans to their workplaces.

As such, The South African National Taxi Council in KwaZulu Natal (Santaco KZN) and South Africa’s largest taxi underwriter CTU, are continuing to reward and recognise hard-working, dedicated and skilled taxi drivers in the industry by encouraging the public to select ‘the best’. Best Driver of the Year 2020.

The aim of the competition is two-fold: rewarding good drivers who work exceptionally hard at delivering great service, keeping the lives entrusted to them safe and, secondly, serving as an eye-opening experience to showcase to commuters, passengers and fellow road users that taxi drivers play a pivotal role in society and their personal journeys.

KwaZulu-Natal based commuters are urged to take note of stickers indicating driver participation located inside the taxis and/ or on the vehicle bumpers.

These commuters will be given a chance to nominate their choice for best driver in the region by voting via SMS. Voting takes place from October until January with winners being

announced towards the end of February 2021.

The finals usually take place at Mkondeni Testing Centre, with the top 10 finalists taking part in a knockout round, during which they are judged according to their driving skills, theory and practical tests, culminating in the top three taxi drivers being chosen.

The overall winner of the competition receives R10 000, whilst the runner up and third placed finalist receive R5 000 each.

The rest of the top 10 finalists each get a R1 000 and a certificate of recognition.

“The taxi industry contributes significantly to South Africa and her citizens.

“Too often, only one side of the coin is seen with the other being hidden from the eyes of the public.

We support the contributions of the industry and, are committed to showcasing the contributions made by the taxi sector to the country.

This is why this year; we have

once again linked arms with Santaco to bring to the locals of KZN the awareness of the work done by these drivers through the Santaco KZN Best Driver of the Year competition.

“Given the value the competition places on good drivers, it is CTU’s goal to partner with the Department of Transport to make the competition a national one,” said Bipin Bhagwan, head of sales and marketing at CTU. For the past two years, the competition has seen four runners up and two overall winners namely Victor Muzikayise Mbatha and Khayelihle Masondo. Mbatha, from the Zululand region, won R10 000 from CTU, a smartphone and a plaque from Santaco KZN in 2019.

The observation of Advent FEVER REPORTER THE annual holy period of Advent, which is observed by various denominations of the Christian faith, commences on Sunday, November 29.

Considered to be a period of ‘waiting’, Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas – with each Sunday denoting a different theme.

The first Sunday is ‘hope’; the second Sunday is ‘peace’; the third Sunday is ‘joy’; and the fourth Sunday is ‘love.’

Some of the practises observed during this period is the displaying of the Advent wreath – which usually holds five candles (three purple, one pink, and one white in the centre). Each week one of the candles on the wreath is lit and accompanied with the praying of an Advent devotional.

The ceremonial colour of Advent is purple, which sees places of worship adorned and draped in this colour.

Other observations that take place during this period is Silent Mornings on Saturday and the Blue Christmas service for those parishioners who have lost loved ones in the past year.

by Netflix. The selected writers will be paid a stipend of 2000 USD per month to participate and will be expected to be available full time for a peri-

od of three months, from June to September 2021.

Since Realness Institute’s inception in 2015, it has delivered five editions of its Screenwriters’ Residency and in 2020, the first Creative Producer Indaba as a Development Executive Traineeship.

Now the NPO will be expanding their offering in 2021 to the episodic content space. This is a fur-

ther step towards the Institute’s mission to empower storytellers on the continent and the Diaspora and push the African audio-visual industry forward. Netflix brings its expertise in episodic content development, production, and insight into global content trends.

Over the past year, there has been a clear appetite for fresh African content to star on global streaming platforms. Netflix has recently enjoyed much success with its first two African original series, Queen Sono and Blood & Water.

AMALAKHE’s Mlondi Mkhize will host the Youth In Conversation (YIC) lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) edition on Friday, December 11 at the Gamalakhe Library from 11am.

Mkhize said he embarked on this event because he has never heard of an event, campaign, or anything similar that was aimed at celebrating people within LGBT community in the South Coast.

“The aim of the event is to allow people within the LGBT community to be seen, heard, and valued. This is the first step in making the South Coast great and progressive, in terms of embracing a society that allows people to live unapologetically to an extent that they attend events that are by them and celebrate them,” said Mkhize, adding that the event is not limited to homosexual people.

Mkhize said during the event, he will be chatting to openly homosexual couples discussing the challenges and joys of publicly displaying their relationships.

Also, he said there will be transgender representatives who will talk about their challenges, costs for surgeries and more.

“This is more of an intimate sit-down conversation to educate people, bring awareness and create a space where people will feel that they are not alone in the South Coast LGBT community,” said Mkhize.

Furthermore, the former Marburg Secondary pupil said he believes that in educating people, it will help clear misconceptions, stereotypes, and all forms of discrimination against homosexuality, so youngsters can be able to live in a homophobic-free society.

“I have always felt the need to be socially responsible. I want to leave the world better than I found it through conversation, creating a platform where youngsters can find a sense of relativeness, share their experiences, address issues and also generate solutions to help us move

What happens when you donate stem cells FEVER REPORTER

OU don’t have to be part of the Avengers or Justice League to save a life, all you have to do is become a stem cell donor.

The thought of it sounds painful and uncomfortable, but the process is not as bad as you would think.

Leonie Venter made the decision to become a donor after she experienced personal loss and wanted to make a difference in someone’s life.

“Do not hesitate to become a stem cell donor. Just do it. You will not be alone on this journey and there is no need to be scared. You can be someone’s hero,” she said.

Hundreds of South Africans of all ages and races are diagnosed with diseases such as leukaemia, aplastic anaemia or some rare genetic disorders. In some instances, their only hope of survival is a blood stem cell transplant from a donor who shares the same tissue type. Their chances of finding a match are about one in 100 000.

With the Sunflower Fund partnered by DKMS’s annual Sunflower Day campaign drawing to a close, South Africans are urged to register as donors and help save lives.

The misconceptions around the donation process discourage many people from taking this life-saving step.

Fortunately, there are people who have registered as donors and are will-

ing to share their stories.

When Venter registered as a donor with The Sunflower Fund in February 2018, she was excited at the prospect of possibly being a match for someone.

“My donating journey started in September 2019 when I received a call to say I might be a possible match for someone. I was shaking with excitement that I might be able to afford someone else a new chance at life.”

On agreeing to the process, Venter received various documents from The Sunflower Fund describing the entire process and explaining what would be expected from her as a donor. She also had to discuss her decision with her family members and familiarise them with the process as their support is critical.

“The Sunflower Fund then arranged for me to undergo a few blood tests and a general health check-up, which did not cost me a cent. I just had to arrive for the appointments.

Throughout the entire process, the Sunflower team checked on me to make sure I was still okay with my decision and reassured me I would not be going through it alone. Their support, love, gratefulness and effort to make everything as smooth as possible was incredibly comforting,” says Venter.

On October 24, 2019, Venter travelled from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town to donate stem cells which are extracted from her blood. She was welcomed with such warmth and friendliness

Venter said the actual process of donating was handled seamlessly.

“Before the donation, I was taken to

the hospital ward to meet the medical staff who would oversee the donation and take care of me. They explained the entire process to me and showed me how the machine works, allowing me to ask as many questions as I needed.”

She says the actual harvesting of the stem cells, which was conducted by professional medical staff in a caring and friendly manner, was not painful. “The only discomfort involved was having to lie on my back for a few hours. This is nothing compared to what patients fighting blood diseases have to go through.”

Venter’s decision to donate is a highly personal one. “On October 23, 2014, our little girl got her angel wings after a two-year battle with cancer. I know what it feels like if you have to hear that medically there is nothing else that can be done. I am profoundly aware of the pain and suffering this illness can cause.

“If I can bring hope to someone else, why not? It does not cost me anything, but it does give me a sense of purpose and belonging.”

She urges South Africans to donate.

“There is nothing more excruciating than watching a loved one deteriorate before your eyes. You feel so helpless and just pray and wish that a miracle will show up. The act of donating may seem like something small or you may think this will not happen to you and your family. I really do not wish this on

anyone, but I do wish that people would be more aware of the power they hold to help others. An unselfish act could mean the world to someone else and a second chance on life. And the feeling you get, knowing that you made a difference, is priceless!”

Media personality, Shahan Ramkissoon, who has signed up as a donor, says the first step to becoming a donor was one of the easiest things he’s ever done. “I did the swab test, which was mailed to me and collected. It’s incredible to think that such a simple process could ultimately help me to help save a life. I encourage everyone to assist the Sunflower Fund and, ultimately, those people in need.”

Sunflower Fund CEO Alana James says the many misapprehensions around blood disorders and stem cell donations are a major challenge for the organisation, making it so much more difficult to secure the muchneeded donors. “There tends to be confusion between blood donation, organ donation and stem cell donation. These are completely different databases. There are also many cultural and religious uncertainties that people think are cause for them not to register.”

Venter has no regrets about donating her stem cells. “I feel great. It almost feels unreal that I donated stem cells a year ago. Would I do it again?

Absolutely yes, without thinking twice!” she concludes.

TORMS, Diwali, fireworks, Christmas parties, all these put our pets under duress.

As we enter the holiday season, let’s give consideration to the noise we humans make enjoying ourselves.

We all know that dogs and cats have a much wider range of hearing than humans, although it is not accurate to say they have a more acute hearing than humans.

In fact, they can hear from four times the distance humans can, but still hear the sound in a similar fashion.

Dogs are much better at detecting higher notes than we are, (we all know about the sheep dog handler blowing a whistle than humans cannot hear, but the dog responds to).

Briefly, humans have a hearing range of 20 to 20,000hz, while the dogs range is 40 to 60,000hz.

The cats’ range is even higher, and bats of course have an amazing range, but dolphins beat even the bats. The dog’s ability to hear high pitched sounds is an aspect of the wolf in him. If no large prey is to be found, the wolf will hunt mice and similar small prey, who have high pitched squeaks.

When we buy squeaky toys for our dogs, we are perpetuating this hunting instinct which has become a game to our domestic dogs.

Did you know puppies are born deaf?

It takes about two weeks before they can hear, and of course their eyes only open at the same time. However from then on, it’s all systems go.

Another reason dog’s hearing is so good is because he can swivel his ears, both, or separately. I’m sure you’ve all seen your dog’s ears prick up at the sound of their owners car approaching, or even better the sound of the col-

lar and leash meaning “walkies”. More of a dog’s brain is dedicated to sound than in a human brain.

When we are training our dogs, they will hear the different pitches in our voices much more than many handlers realise. Use a lower pitch for your commands: sit; down etc and use a much higher, lighter voice to praise them.

Say your command just once. For them to hear sit, sit, sit, will just be white noise.

Formal training will end shortly to allow the dogs a holiday from all our demands, however do continue to work with your dog on the things they enjoy, be it tracking, agility, or simply going for long walks.

I have recently begun attending protection work classes with my Belgian Malinois, and realised this is something she really enjoys, as it’s in her breed to learn this obedience. In the same way, a St Bernard would prefer to do search and rescue rather than agility.

So do encourage those aspects of your dog’s breed, just as my friend does when she brings her Labrador to my house for a visit, and of course Lab has come for a swim in my pool.

Lastly, please be aware of your pet’s emotions during the next few weeks, don’t forget them in the excitement of the holidays. Keep them dry in the rain, and calm during excess noise, they only have you to protect them.

Think of giving just a piece of your bonus to a rescue shelter, no matter how small, it will make a difference for those animals that don’t have a family to spoil them over the holidays.

COVID-19: Unlike anything felt before ADRIAAN BASSON IS it as bad as everyone says it is?

Yes. Isn’t it just like a normal flu?

No. Did you experience heavy symptoms that required medical assistance?

No, and I am extremely thankful for that.

Aren’t you glad you had it and can move on with your life now?

Partly, yes, but I would’ve preferred not to have experienced the symptoms of Covid-19 and would like my sense of smell and taste back, please. I have noted the positive studies on long-lasting immunity, but they are not conclusive enough yet for me to behave recklessly and potentially infect others, even though I may not experience the symptoms again. These, in a nutshell, are my responses to the most frequently asked questions by people when they find out I was recently one of the 707 000 South Africans who have survived Covid19.

Testing positive for Covid-19, or SARS-CoV-2 being “detected”, as the laboratory test results phrase

it, came as a shock for my family and me after eight months of obeying physical distancing, wearing masks and washing or sanitising our hands with military precision.

But, like millions of South Africans, we lowered our guard when the country moved to level one and started moving around more freely.

We saw a limited number of friends in safe environments and queued to renew our vehicle licences and do shopping.

We are still not exactly sure when or where we finally got infected, but it was probably in a social setting with insufficient ventilation, where we lowered our masks to eat and drink, and a guest we never spoke to subsequently tested positive. But it could also have been in an “innocent” queue at the shops. You just don’t know.

One of the lessons from testing positive for Covid-19 was not to fret too much about where you got it; it is part of our “new normal” that you will inevitably be exposed somewhere, and as adults we all need to take responsibility for our choices, movements and behaviour.

I have learned so much over the past few weeks about the testing

regime for Covid-19 and the different approaches. One of the confusing things about Covid-19 is the different messages you receive from different medical practitioners. When I first heard that I may have been exposed, I went to a pharmacy for a rapid antibody test.

I wasn’t deemed a “primary contact” because I wasn’t in close contact with a person who had tested positive.

This was five days after my potential exposure and I had no symptoms. The pharmacist explained to me the test was not foolproof, but he was pretty certain the outcome would be accurate because of the time that had lapsed and because I wasn’t showing any symptoms.

I tested negative.

Two days later, my wife tested positive and I went for a “normal” PCR test, where they stick a thin swab up your nostril and scratch around in your brain (okay, that is what it felt like) for a few seconds.

Late that night, about 14 hours after testing, I received the SMS from the laboratory: “DETECTED”.

The process after testing positive for Covid-19 is intense. You

have to trace your steps over the past few days and inform anyone you were in close contact with that you have tested positive.

Because of my negative antibody test (which I now believe was done too soon after my potential exposure, and is not recommended for clinical diagnosis by the World Health Organisation), I had attended a social gathering with colleagues.

Not only did I have to inform them that they were now primary contacts and had to isolate for 10 days, but the establishment we visited also had to be informed of my positive result.

I also had to phone friends and people I had coffee or a drink (close contact) with, and tell them they had to isolate for 10 days. The admin following a positive test is intense and draining. And although everyone I potentially may have infected were kind about the situation, I felt a level of guilt about exposing them (thankfully they all tested negative; my boss joked that I am a “no-spreader”).

From a mild sore throat, my symptoms increased rapidly over a few days. First came the head-

aches, then the fever, the extreme fatigue and the loss of smell and taste. For three days, I was in bed without energy to even finish a Whats-App message. It is unlike any illness I have experienced before.

Thankfully, we never developed any bad respiratory problems, but in those three days, you wait for the cough to start.

Your mind rushes to the images of Covid-19 patients on ventilators and oxygen, and you wonder if you will be one of the unlucky ones. I survived and for that I am extremely grateful. Despite not having regained fully my smell and taste, I am healthy and functioning as before — 21 000 South Africans weren’t that lucky, and the real Covid-19 fatality number is probably double that.

I have no profound words of wisdom or tips, other than to say: don’t get it. It’s not worth the health risk and emotional turmoil.

Wash your hands, keep a physical distance and wear a mask. Be safe and don’t think you are invincible.

Maandag lees ek weer ‘n klompie gereelde sêgoed raak wat mede ou-SAUKaner Dawid van Lill op die Facebookblad plaas, en met sy toestemming, publiseer en van hulle vandeesweek met die hoop dat dit jul dag, of week, sal opkikker. *DAARDIE OOMBLIK WANNEER: Jy besef dit was nie ’n goeie idee om albei jou bene in dieselfde broekspyp te probeer druk nie.

Jy die koppie koffie neersit op die tafeltjie wat net gister nog presies dáár was.

Become an organ donor FEVER REPORTER

HE Organ Donor Foundation (ODF) is appealing to all South Africans to find out more about what it takes to become a donor before writing it off.

Volunteer ambassador of the ODF, Sammy Nandlall said that there are many fears and misconceptions about organ donation and the ODF aims to raise awareness of organ and tissue donation transplantation.

Organ donation is the medical process of taking an organ from a deceased person, with the consent of their family and friends, and surgically transplanting it into another person who is in dire need of an organ.

“These fears and misconceptions prevent people from considering donating their organs when they die.

This leads to many preventable organ failure deaths that could have been prevented, had the deceased donate their organs,” she said.

She added that organ donations don’t delay funerals and extreme care and respect is taken during the procedure.

Nandlall said the most important factor and reality is that these donated organs save lives.

“The sad reality is the need for life-saving organ transplants is increasing much faster than the organs are becoming available. Organ transplants have saved millions of lives, but every day, more critically ill patients are added to the national waiting list. However, by becoming an organ donor you can possibly be the difference between life or death

for someone else.”

Anyone can be a potential donor, irrespective of age, race or medical history. “Donation professionals review medical history to determine if you can donate. With recent advances in transplantation, more people can donate than before.

“New-born babies and even the elderly have been organ donors. If a donor is under the age of 18, the consent of a parent or legal guardian is required. Adults can also make living donations, meaning that a living adult can choose to give an organ, like a kidney, or part of an organ, like a liver, to someone in need.”

Organ donation is made possible by people who voluntary decide to donate their organs and tissue for transplantation. There are two types of transplants, organ, and tissue transplants.

The organs (heart, liver, pancreas, kidneys, and lungs) can save seven lives. The tissues (corneas, bone, tendons, heart valves, skin) can help up to 50 people.

“By becoming a donor, a person has the potential to help over 50 people when they die. They can help give life once theirs has come to an end,” said Nandlall.

“You do not have to donate all your organs when you die. You can specify what you want to donate.”

5.Set up a living will in which you indicate your wishes to donate your organs should you die.

Donation costs absolutely nothing. By our laws, the hospital and or Tissue Bank will cover all medical expenses from the moment your family gives consent to have your organs/tissue donated.

The donor and their family do not receive any compensation for donating any organs or tissue. Donation is a gift and should come from kindness.

“At the end of the day, organ donation is a personal choice. If you change your mind, you will need to tear up your donor card and remove the stickers from your ID and driver’s license. You must also inform your family and friends that you no longer wish to donate your organs or tissues when you die.

Oscar Pistorius documentary series on DStv HERMAN ELOFF

N the morning of February 14, 2013, South Africans were woken from their slumber by shocking news that made headlines across the world.

Paralympian athlete Oscar Pistorius had shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his luxury home in the Silver Woods Country Estate in Pretoria.

Now, in what is the most in-depth documentary made about the athlete’s rise and fall from grace, the tragedy that left a country traumatised is brought to the fore once again.

The Life and Trials of Oscar Pistorius, which will air in four parts on ESPN (DStv channel 218), follows the style of ESPN’s OJ: Made in America, released in 2016. “I’d just finished making George Best: All By Himself, and it was out at the London Film Festival about four years ago.

“ESPN were looking at what they were going to do that was as big in both scale and length as the OJ film the previous summer,” British director Daniel Gordon said.

“They kind of wanted that kind of film. We’re not talking true crime, and I always find the OJ comparison quite

What the OJ film had allowed in terms of film-making was that it allowed you to tell a much more layered story that unfolds just a little bit slower and by the end you’ve got the full picture. the beginning. That was four years ago that we decided to do it and it’s taken that long to make.”

The Life and Trials of Oscar Pistorius explores his childhood and family dynamic before focusing on his athletic debut at the Athens Summer Paralympics in 2004. The series includes Pistorius’s battles with World Athletics (then the IAAF), his training in Gemona del Friuli in the Italian Alps and

continues up until the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

Each episode is linked by the court case in which Pistorius was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 15 years in jail for shooting and killing Steenkamp.

Gordon said the story of Pistorius and Steenkamp not only resonated with South Africans, but with people around the world. “Oscar was big in the United Kingdom because we’re very big on Paralympic sport and that’s probably because we’re quite successful at it. It’s covered extensively in Britain and therefore the public is interested.

“So, even when Oscar was running in 2005 in the UK, the attendance in the stadium was okay, not great, but the watching public on television was massive.

He was an emerging star that was about to get very big.”

Gordon added: “I find this interesting about the sport documentaries I make. They’re never about the sport.

They’re always about the people, or the achievement, or the method, or telling a bigger story than just a sport story.

“I often find it’s our projection on them [sport stars] that’s the problem.

When they fall, we hate them. But they were like that all the way through. We just projected this greatness onto them.

“I think that’s a lesson I’ve learnt from all these films recently. We just have to be really careful with what we project onto other people.”

He emphasised that the aim of the documentary is not to solve the crime or to change anyone’s perspective on what happened that night, saying: “Only he [Pistorius] will know.”

Over 200 people were interviewed for the film, including journalists like Mandy Wiener and Barry Bateman, and athlete Samkelo Radebe. Pistorius’s uncle Arnold, his brother Carl and his cousin Maria Janse van Rensburg also appear, alongside his exgirlfriends Samantha Taylor and Jenna Edkins.

Both the Steenkamp and Pistorius families were consulted in the research and planning for the film and given a chance to be interviewed.

T is the most extreme crash test ever executed by Volvo Cars, and a crucial one. Extrication specialists often use cars crashed at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre to hone their life-saving skills.

To allow rescue services to prepare for any possible crash scenario and to simulate the forces that erupt in the most extreme crashes, beyond what can be simulated with ordinary crash testing, Volvo Cars recently took equally extreme measures. For the first time, it dropped several new Volvos multiple times from a crane, from a height of 30 metres.

This approach helped create enough damage to adequately simulate the damage found in the most extreme crash scenarios: think of single-car accidents at very high speed, accidents whereby a car hits a truck at high speed, or accidents whereby a car takes a severe hit from the side.

In such situations, people inside the car are likely to be in a critical condition. Therefore the priority is to get people out of the car and to a hospital as quickly as possible, using hydraulic rescue tools known in the industry as ‘jaws of life’.

Extrication specialists often talk about the golden hour: they need to release and get a patient to the hospital within one hour after the accident has happened.

“We have been working closely together with the Swedish rescue services for many years,” said Håkan Gustafson, a senior investigator with the Volvo Cars Traffic Accident Research Team.

“That is because we have the same goal: to have safer roads for all. We hope no one ever needs to experience the most severe accidents, but not all accidents can be avoided. So it is vital there are methods to help save lives

when the most severe accidents do happen.”

All findings from the crashes and the resulting extrication work will be collected in an extensive research report.

This report will be made available free of use to rescue workers elsewhere, allowing them to benefit from the

findings and further develop their life-saving capabilities.

Usually, rescue workers get their training vehicles from scrapyards. But these cars are often up to two decades old. And in terms of steel strength, safety cage construction and overall durability, there is a vast difference between modern cars and those built fifteen to twenty years ago. And new Volvos are made of some of the hardest steel found in modern cars.

This makes it crucial for rescue workers to constantly update their familiarity with newer car models and review their processes, in order to develop new extrication techniques. In other words, these training sessions can mean the difference between life and death. So at the request

of the rescue services, Volvo Cars decided to step things up a notch.

“Normally we only crash cars in the laboratory, but this was the first time we dropped them from a crane,” says Gustafson. “We knew we would see extreme deformations after the test, and we did this to give the rescue team a real challenge to work with.”

A total of 10 Volvos, of different models, were dropped from the crane several times. Before the drop, Volvo Cars safety engineers made exact calculations about how much pressure and force each car needed to be exposed to, in order to reach the desired level of damage.

Seniors’ tennis championships on the coast FEVER REPORTER

ENNIS South Africa (TSA) Seniors Tour is coming to the South Coast from Thursday, December 10 to Sunday, December 13.

The tour, which is a qualifier for the World Championships, is being hosted by TSA, KZN Tennis, Ugu Tennis Association (UTA) and Southbroom tennis clubs.

It is open to participants aged 30 years and older.

For first-time seniors’ tournament players, entry costs R250 and entries end today (November 26).

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) Seniors Tour has 27 500 registered

players from 70 nations, competing in 502 tournaments worldwide and culminating in the annual World Championships.

Ugu Tennis Association president, Ian Ackerman said Ugu South Coast and TSA are promoting this tournament across all 14 ‘tennis provinces’ in South Africa, in an effort to grow the sport.

“There are already about 18 000 senior players in the country, so we stand a good chance when competing internationally,” said Ackerman.

Ackerman said entries are currently being registered with TSA with hope that some top contestants will make an appearance.

Previous local players who’ve repre-

sented their country in the ITF Seniors Tour include Ralph Burles, Gules Salottolo, Raj Naganna, Sharon van der Schyff, Martyn Nagtegaal, Hannelie Nagtegaal, Zelda Smook, as well as Ackerman.

Ugu South Coast Tourism CEO Phelisa Mangcu said: “We are so delighted to be one of the locations hosting this year’s prestigious National Seniors Tour.”
