HE installation of optic fibre cables in areas under the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has been halted. This comes after residents reported power and water outages in their residential areas, with some reporting damage to their driveways.

Margate resident Ronell van Rensburg said the installation company has been digging in her area for the past three weeks.

“We have had non-stop power outages ever since they came. Last week, power was off for almost two days and some of our food went off. Yesterday, they hit a water pipe and an hour later, the electricity went off because they hit an electrical cable, I assume,” said van Rensburg, adding that one cable has been patched up in eight different places.

“They even ran out of insulation tape and the workers came to us asking if we had the

tape. Whenever we call Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, they come out and assess the situation and before they leave, they say they will contact the contractor because they have an arrangement with them which states that whatever they damage, they must repair,” said van Rensburg.

RNM spokesperson Simon April said the municipality has taken drastic steps to address the challenges caused by the optic fibre cable installation company.

“This follows a series of damages to either electricity cables, water pipes, the roads or driveways. All these have resulted in residents being severely affected and inconvenienced. RNM, Ugu District Municipality and Eskom have all been affected as they have struggled with the turnaround time to restore power or water and even fixing the road due to unplanned and a huge number of damages,” said April.

He added that last Friday, RNM’s senior

management met with the management of the installation company and it was agreed that the company will stop all the work until the latter submits a formal request to the municipality, and then the two parties will have to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) before the work can resume.

“Among the key points in the MOU are: the company will have to inform RNM within 10 minutes of the damage of the electricity cable or water pipe, the affected entity (RNM, Ugu or Eskom) will then provide the company with the contractor to fix the damaged property or item in order for the supply to be restored and that shall happen within an hour. The company will bear the costs of fixing the said property or item. RNM, where possible, will provide the company with a list of dangerous areas for the company to avoid when installing the optic fibre cable,” said April.

Furthermore, April said the municipality and the installation company acknowl-

edged that since the work had started, residents have been badly affected and they deserve a sincere apology.

“The municipality is also of the view that this should have been handled better even before the work was permitted to start and is therefore, out of its own accord, sincerely apologises to the residents who have been negatively affected. Going forward, no work will be done up until both parties sign a Memorandum of Understanding which will set out means of quickly attending to unintended happenings or incidents,” said April.

Correction THE article ‘Residents finding solutions to water problems’ contained an error with regards to the visit to St Helen’s pump station.

The South Coast Water Action Group (SCWAG) said in their visit to the St Helen’s Rock Pump Station they did not find an electrical output that was not connected properly as stated in the article.

The correct finding is at the upper water level, the electrical output from a diesel generator, used for powering the winches to raise the pumps from the water’s edge, is not connected to the winch motors.

We regret the error and apologise for any inconveniences caused.

ITH dry taps plaguing the South Coast, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is demanding real intervention from the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Sipho Hlomuka and provincial premier Sihle Zikalala regarding the ongoing water crisis in the area.

According to DA’s provincial spokesperson in COGTA Chris Pappas, this move comes after years of inaction by the provincial government when it comes to assisting the Ugu community which is being denied its basic human right to water.

“The residents of Ugu have suffered for too long under an incapable and uncaring government. Weeks without water, a lack of transparency and failing state institutions have left them with few remaining options. The DA cannot accept that this community should be forced to take legal action against a government which will then use their hard-earned tax money to defend its failures,” said Pappas.

Furthermore, Pappas said they want Hlomuka and Zikalala to convene an urgent meeting between themselves, Ugu municipality, all local municipalities within the district, all Ugu district and local councillors, uMgeni Water, the National Minister of Water and Sanitation and affected civic organisations.

the table to resolve this crisis. Regrettably they have been ignored by successive MECs and premiers,” said Pappas.

THE MEASURES INCLUDE: - Placing the district under administration in terms of Section 139 of the Constitution. It may in fact be too late for this now.

- Instructing uMgeni Water to take over bulk water services in the entire district.

- Forcing local municipalities to comply with the 8% maintenance budget requirement, in line with Section 154 and 155 of the Constitution.

- Conducting investigations into the cause of the

collapse of the municipality and holding those responsible accountable and; - Utilising national and provincial grant funding to alleviate years of financial mismanagement and lack of investment.

Also, Pappas said the DA has given the MEC and the premier 14 days to respond favourably to their solution-orientated request.

“Failing this, we will be forced to take an aggressive approach in resolving this untenable situation and reserve our rights for legal action in the event that the premier and MEC fail to place the interests of Ugu’s people first,” he said.

Two arrested for post office robbery FEVER REPORTER TWO suspects, aged 32 and 33, are expected to appear in the Phungashe Magistrate’s Court soon for an armed robbery which occurred at the Phungashe Post Office.

According to Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo of the Hawks, on January 12 at about 7.55am three suspects entered Phungashe Post Office and held up staff members at gunpoint.

“They forced the manager to open safe and they stole an undisclosed amount of cash. They further

robbed employees of two cell phones and fled the scene in their getaway vehicle,” said Mhlongo.

He said a case of armed robbery was reported at St Faith’s police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation team for an intensive probe.

“In the early hours of Tuesday, March 16, a joint operation was conducted by Hawks members and Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team in the Endwebu area. The operation yielded positive results when the two suspects were brought to book. They were charged for armed robbery. Investigations are continuing and more arrests are expected,” said Mhlongo.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial head, Major General Leseja Senona welcomed the arrest of the two suspects.

“Our members will continue with the search of the outstanding suspects and their time is limited, they will be soon brought to book,” said Senona.

HE teenage boy from Port Shepstone who was arrested a week ago for allegedly assaulting his eight-year-old brother in Mehlomnyama on the South Coast, will appear at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on March 26.

This comes after KZN Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza, opened a child abuse case last week.

Khoza learnt about the eightyear-old’s case after graphic photographs of the badly bruised boy circulated on social media.

Khoza said she wants the court to set an example with people who continue to abuse children.

“The Department of Social Development is the custodian of the Child Protection Act. “We are not going to leave anyone to walk freely after abusing a child. We are formally opening a case and police have to account [for] why they failed to rescue a child in distress and arrest the alleged perpetrator.

“We want the court to set an example with people who continue abusing children and also those that are vulnerable,” said Khoza.

Port Shepstone police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge said a case of assault is being investigated

by Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) since it involves a minor.

“The 17-year-old male will appear at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Friday, March 26,” said Mpinge.

The eight-year-old’s cousin, Samke Lushaba, who posted pictures of the boy’s bruises on social media, confirmed that the boy is currently under the care of social workers.

WO men from the South Coast, Reevek Ramlall (35) and Durell Govender (24), who are facing charges of attempted murder, will appear at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on April 1.

This comes after the duo received bail on Monday, March 8.

The two were arrested on January 11, after they allegedly ran over South African National Defence Force member, Vishay Singh, outside his home in Marburg.

Singh, who sustained serious injuries from the accident, has been unconscious in hospital for over two months.

The accused’s first appearance at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court was on January 19. They appeared again on January 21 for a bail application, where they denied the allegations against them. Ramlall and Govender first applied for bail before magistrate, Thandeka Fikeni, who denied their applica-

tion. The men appeared at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court for a second bail application in March and Fikeni granted them bail.

Singh’s sister, Verona Singh, told Fever that it breaks their hearts to know her brother is fighting for his life and the people that put him there are walking free.

“However, our main concern and focus is on Vishay. At the moment, we feel the justice system is failing us. We keep wondering constantly if Vishay could be left in such dire straits then what stops the allegedly accused people from attempting to attack our family once again. As much as we are hurt by this, we believe strongly that God will definitely not fail us,” said Verona.

She added that they don’t wish for any family to go through what they are currently facing. Furthermore she said they know that Vishay is a fighter and a soldier, so he will keep fighting.

“We are still praying for a miracle and a break through with his medical condition. We are unable to say much about Vishay’s medical condition as there are no changes. We are eagerly waiting for the day he wakes up, speaks to us or even moves to show us his going to be okay. The severity of his injuries can only be determined once he is awake and talking,” she said.

She added that their only wish is for Vishay to be completely healed and to be back home.

“He is still so young and has so much more to see in life,” said Verona.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sibu Ncane said investigations are continuing and the two men will be back in court on April 1.

WO teenage brothers from the South Coast are recycling cans, scrap metals, glass, plastic and paper in aid of the SPCA. Dru and Ty de Bruyn of Trash-ahaulics have since raised close to R6 000 for the lower South Coast SPCA. The duo also managed to donate more than 150 ecobricks to Osidisweni Community Creche in Gcilima and also raised more than R3 000 for the creche.

“We are recycling cans as well as scrap metal. We are also collecting plastic, glass, cardboard and paper to recycle. Please help and support us as we split the money made from recycling, a part of it is donated to the SPCA and we keep some for our pocket money. We also make ecobricks and donate them,” said Dru. According to the boys’ mother, Kym Pollard, the Trash-a-haulics came up with the idea when the pandemic started last year.

“Dru is 15-years-old and Ty is now 13. Last year during lockdown and spending so much time at home, the boys started seeing how much garbage there was. Ty mentioned he would like to start collecting tins and after lockdown level 3 they handed in their tins and received their first R40,” said Pollard, adding that after receiving the money they were so proud.

She added that with the boys’ passion for animals, the SPCA was a natural choice and that is why they donate a third of the money they get from recycling to the SPCA. She highlighted that a few months into their recycling they were approached by a local charity organisation called Gratiari.

“They now make and donate ecobricks to this charity. They have also helped with a campaign to raise funds for ablutions at a Osidisweni Gclima Community Crèche with Grace Décor being a major sponsor,” said Pollard.

She emphasized that the Trash-ahaulics have always been passionate about nature, animals and the outdoors because they grew up in a dive centre.

“They have always been aware of recycling but it is not easy on the coast and there are not many places to drop recycling,” said Pollard.

The Sheppie High pupils said they plan to run with this initiative for as long as they are on the South Coast.

“We are hoping to make more people aware of the fact that recycling should be a part of what every household does on a daily basis if we want to protect our environment and future,” said the Trash-a-haulics.

Pollard said she is very proud of her boys. “I am very proud because they spend many hours per day on recycling and most of their free time,” said Pollard.

DOCTOR Leon Bruggemann of the Margate Veterinary Clinic said they had a special raptor patient last week.

“A juvenile black-chested Snake Eagle, very uncommon in our area, at the extreme end of its distribution map.

“It got caught in a fence in Uvongo, probably chasing after a prey (it eats mostly snakes, I photographed an adult recently, flying over Uvongo with a snake hanging out of the beak),” said Bruggemann.

He added that it is always such an exhilarating feeling seeing such a magnificent creature setting off back to the wild.

INDING pet-friendly accommodation on the KZN south coast is a challenge for ‘parents’ who have fur babies.

Some pet owners are forced to give up their pets so that they could find shelter for themselves, and some refuse to be separated from their pets. Priscilla Pheiffer of Margate said it is really sad how scarce pet friendly accommodations are. Pheiffer has two dogs, a poodle and pug.

“I have just over a month to find a new [place], I think this is likely to be one of the very reasons people dump their pets, but that is just not us; our poodle and pug boys are our whole lives,” said Pheiffer. She added that she

has seen so many beautiful clean and modern units on the South Coast, only to be left disappointed because knowing her ‘children’ are not welcome.

“Letting agents should consider allowing individuals with pets. So many of the fur parents out there will take such good care of your rental, just as much as the many without pets, or even children for that matter. I’m not blind to the fact that most units are holiday rentals and this exacerbates the lack of willingness to accommodate even the most well trained pets,” she said.

Furthermore, Pheiffer said she was under the impression that a security deposit serves as collateral for any possible damages.

“We are getting very stressed out by our given time frame which is April 30. I hope let-

ting agents find it in their hearts to help those with fur babies to find a suitable home because there is a bunch of us,” she said.

Letting agent on the South Coast, Welile Khuzwayo said irresponsible tenants have made it hard for responsible animal lovers to find suitable and pet-friendly accommodation. “Although some landlords just don’t want animals on their properties, some have had bad experiences in the past where tenants allowed their pets to destroy property; and in cases like that it is understandable why some landlords decide to not accommodate pets,” said Khuzwayo.

He added that landlords have to state the reasons why they are not accommodating pets. “But it is the landlord’s decision to make,” said Khuzwayo.

ELF-PUBLISHED author Sphamandla Ngcece said with his book titled Impangele enhle ikhala igijima, he hopes to inspire others to reach their full potential.

Ngcece who is from kwaQoloqolo eZamani in Mthwalume published his book in December 2020.

“The fictitious drama novel is written in IsiZulu and it follows the life of a girl called Sthembile who lives in a township where she faces a lot problems, like most people who come from townships,” said Ngece.

He added that the main aim of the book is to assure people that in difficult times, it is okay to break down and cry.

“The title of the book is a creative Zulu metaphor. The title can be roughly translated to ‘a good prey cries while running away from the predator’. The book itself encourages people to not allow their sorrows to stop them from achieving greatness,” said Ngcece.

Furthermore, the author said his passion for writing can be credited to his grandmother.

“As much as I started writing when lockdown began in 2020, my grandmother used to say she hopes I would one day become an attorney, a detective or a journalist. She said these professions would suit me because I have the ability to change a person’s thinking or make them see things from my perspective.”

The author, who currently works as a business administrator, said being a writer can be challenging.

“There’s always a demand for more copies of the book and I need money to order those. I have resorted to sourcing people on the South Coast who will help with distributing the book for me,” said Ngece.

T was another hot but enjoyable day at Hibiscus Kennel Club on March 14, where we were joined by agility members from Durban, for the open show which had trials tagged on to it.

We thank Bev Hourquebie and Sheldene Fourie for officiating as judges and we once again thank Montego for their generous sponsorship.

They have been our main sponsor for many years and even now, during tough economic times, they are still prepared to assist. Thank you too to their rep Lechelle Keddie who travels from Durban North to spend the day with us. We really do appreciate the

support.

THE RESULTS WERE AS FOLLOWS: Ann Shaw finished first with KK, third with Shenzie and a second and third with Mandu.

Ninette Smith got two second places with Shimmer, first and second with Swish and a first with Glitz.

Elsie McKillen finished first and second with Gemma.

Well done to all of you. Hard work and dedication pays off.

Although Dylan Strydom is not a member of HKC he deserves recognition for his amazing rounds. Unfortunately he runs Gucci for someone else

and we all know how difficult that is.

To keep Gucci on the course he has to run with a toy, which means he does not qualify, but he attends every show and makes Gucci’s mom very proud.

Well done, Dylan.

Saturday afternoon, which is our official club day, is not being well attended at the moment, but we hope that once the heat subsides members will return.

To those who are there every weekend, thank you. The evening agility training is picking up and great fun is being had.

Student protests a result of Zuma’s unrealistic promises ADRIAAN BASSON WHEN former president Jacob Zuma announced free higher education in December 2017, he knew the country couldn’t afford it.

It is estimated that South Africa lost anything between R500 billion to R1,5 trillion during the state capture years of Zuma. To give you some context: our entire budget for the country was R1,84 trillion last year. These vast amounts are calculated by adding the billions of rands we lost through government transactions with the Gupta empire, to investment we lost as a result of Zuma’s attempts to break the bank and hand over South Africa’s fiscus to Saxonwold.

As a parting “gift” to the country, Zuma unilaterally decided and announced on December 16, 2017, that the government would in future subsidise free higher education for poor and working-class students.

What was widely speculated at the time

was confirmed by Blade Nzimande, the Higher Education minister, last week. The decision to announce free higher education was Zuma’s alone and not budgeted for or discussed with national Treasury. No wonder senior Treasury officials left their positions shortly thereafter. They knew what was coming. The government, through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas), simply doesn’t have the money to fund free higher education for all.

ZUMA RESPONSIBLE Scenes at the University of the Witwatersrand last week, that student leaders have promised will be repeated at all universities in the country this week, are a direct result of Zuma’s ill-timed and ill-advised announcement of December 2017.

The date isn’t coincidental; December 16 was the first day of the ANC’s national elective conference at Nasrec, at which Zuma’s

former wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, was the front-runner to succeed him as party president. It is no secret that Dlamini-Zuma was the preferred candidate of Zuma, the Guptas and their crooked faction in the ANC. With this enormously impactful and disastrous announcement, being the immoral populist he is, Zuma attempted to sway more votes Dlamini-Zuma’s way. Free education has long been a dream of the ANC, but unfortunately it remains unrealistic in a real world, where budgets have to match income with expenditure.

In typical Zuma fashion, he ignored an expensive and highly researched report into funding higher education, headed by retired judge John Heher, that found the government did not have the money for universal free higher education.

The Zondo Commission of Inquiry into state capture recently heard evidence that the Fees Must Fall campaign was infiltrated by paid agents and Masutha’s role in this is yet to be clarified.

Coincidentally, Masutha was also the long-time boyfriend of Zuma and DlaminiZuma’s daughter Thuthukile. Presented with a report by a presidential panel that took many months to research, and the manifesto of a student activist-cum-spy, Zuma chose the latter.

ZUMA STOLE STUDENTS’ DREAMS Students were rightfully jubilated, and Zuma thought he had bought his legacy as the saviour of young South Africans. Zuma may not have succeeded in buying the Nasrec election for his ex, but he did succeed in stealing the dreams of thousands of students, who will not be funded by the government over the next decade.

The ugly scenes will play out again on the streets of our campuses this week and for the coming years. Ill-equipped police officers and under-supported vice-chancellors will be left to deal with calamities and pick up the pieces.

Covid-19 has compounded the havoc wreaked on our budget by the state capture years. Imagine if we still had that R500 billion to R1, trillion that was lost in the state capture years to spend on education. We may have been able to fund an entire generation’s schooling.

But Zuma killed that dream, with many others.

IT is algemene kennis dat Suid-Afrika se hoofregter Mogoeng Mogoeng ‘n toegewyde Christen is, en soos talle mede-Christengelowiges, het hy ‘n sagte plekkie in sy hart vir die staat Israel. Hoewel die Jodedom van 2 000 jaar gelede die Christene se Messias gekruisig het, bestaan daar nogtans ‘n groot affiniteit met Israel, sy mense en geskiedenis, om ooglopende redes. Feitlik al die gebeure wat in die Christelike Bybel opgeteken staan, het in Israel afgespeel, en dit maak dus sin dat derduisende Christene vanoor die hele wêreld pelgrimstogte soontoe onderneem, en ‘n spesiale gevoel vir die land het.

In Suid-Afrika het hierdie spesiale gevoel vir Israel onder gelowige Christene die afgelope tyd onder die soeklig gekom nadat Hoofregter Mogoeng Mogoeng tydens ‘n digitale seminaar van die Jerusalem Post in Junie verlede jaar onder meer sy liefde vir Israel en sy mense verklaar het.

Die regter, wat toe reeds onder hewige kritiek deurgeloop het omdat hy nie skaam is om sy Christelike geloof uit te lewe nie, is hieroor heftig uit regeringskringe en deur ander politieke instansies en individue gekritiseer.

Hy is na ‘n ondersoek deur die Komitee vir Geregtelike Optrede verlede week opdrag gegee om verskoning te vra en sy kommentaar terug te trek. Volgens die regter is hy selfs ‘n geskrewe weergawe gegee van wat hy moet sê. Verlede Sondagaand het hy verklaar hy weier om dit te doen omdat hy niks het om oor jammer te wees nie, en kennis gegee dat hy teen die beslissing gaan appelleer.

Volgens hom is die komitee se besluit, bekend gemaak deur afgetrede Adjunk-regter Phineas Mojapelo, wat die ondersoek gelei het nadat hy klagtes van drukgroepe ontvang het, ‘bekrompe, gebrekkig en oppervlakkig’. ‘God het my onbetwisbare redes gegee om teen die besluit te appelleer. Ek respekteer die reg, en sal dit nie verwerp nie. Maar wanneer van my verwag word om

onaanvaarbaar op te tree of om God te verwerp, sal ek liewer sonder geld of enige posisie wees. Ek sal nooit weier om God te gehoorsaam nie’. Regter Mogoeng het bygevoeg ‘wanneer van my verwag word om te verklaar ek haat Israel en die Jode sal ek liewer nie meer Hoofregter wil wees nie.

Die regter is aangesê om verskoning aan te teken omdat hy by ‘n politieke kontroversie betrokke geraak het.

Hy is skuldig bevind op vier aanklagte, en die ander drie is dat hy die skeiding van magte-beginsel oortree het, dat hy die prestige van sy pos misbruik het om sy eie belang en dié van die Jerusalem Post en die Israelse regering te bevorder, en dat hy homself bemoei het met bedrywighede buite die sfeer van die regsberoep wat nie met die beginsels van die beroep versoen kan word nie.

Hy is in die algemeen daarvan beskuldig dat hy teen die regering kant gekies het vir ‘n vreemde moondheid, en dat hy Israel aangemoedig het om die volkereg te oortree en om besluite van die VN-veiligheidsraad oor die optrede van Israel ten opsigte van die Palestyne te ondermyn.

Regter Mogoeng het verklaar hoewel hy skuldig bevind is aan ‘ondermyning van die amptelike Suid-Afrikaanse beleid jeëns Israel’, bestaan daar nie so ‘n amptelike beleid nie. ‘Wanneer so ‘n beleid gevestig word, moet dit gedoen word ingevolge paragraaf 85 (2) b van die Grondwet, tesame met seksie 101, subseksies een en twee.

Daar moet ‘n ‘n dokument wees geteken deur die President en die minister verantwoordelik vir daardie portefeulje. Hy het gesê daar bestaan nie ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse beleid wat strydig is met wat hy gesê het nie.

Die een ding wat ons verkeerdelik vir mekaar sê is: “Jy mag nie uitdrukking aan jou emosies gee nie.” Eeue gelede skryf een van die leiers in die kerk aan sy gemeente: “Word kwaad, maar moenie sondig nie. Mense is onder geweldige druk as gevolg van baie dinge in die samelewing wat hulle uithouvermoë tot die uiterste beproef. Jy het net ’n vonkie nodig om of jou humeur te verloor of iets te sê wat jy berou. Natuurlik mag ook die Christen kwaad word. Daar is soms rede om kwaad te word as jy sien hoe mense geleenthede ver-

Hy het in elk geval reeds ander omstrede uitlatings gemaak, onder meer oor die Codiv-19-entstof. Hopelik sal daar ‘n manier gevind word om die saak te besleg sonder verdere konfrontasie.

‘A VISIONARY monarch’ CLIVE NDOU

ORN in 1948 in Nongoma, KwaZuluNatal, King Goodwill Zwelithini was installed in 1971 following the death of his father, King Cyprian Bhekuzulu kaSolomon.

Despite the fact that his father died in 1968, it took three years for Zwelithini to be installed as there were fears he could be assassinated should he be installed immediately.

When he was finally installed on December 3, 1971, the ceremony became one of the biggest in the history of the Zulu monarchy, with more than 20 000 people attending the event.

However, it did not take long for Zwelithini’s throne to come under threat.

In 1975, the king’s cousin, Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who had just launched his own political party — the IFP — accused him of meddling in political matters in the province.

Buthelezi, who at the time was the prime minister of the KwaZulu Bantustan government, imposed a restriction on Zwelithini’s movements, resulting in the king having to seek approval from the KwaZulu cabinet when he wanted to travel outside the then Nongoma Tribal Authority.

As tensions between Zwelithini and Buthelezi heightened, the IFP leader also accused the king of conspiring with foreign governments to weaken the IFP and undermine the KwaZulu Bantustan government.

At one point Buthelezi had Zwelithini’s salary cut.

However, the relationship between Buthelezi and Zwelithini improved over the years, resulting in the IFP becoming one of the main supporters of the king.

During the negotiations that preceded the 1994 democratic elections, Buthelezi pushed hard for all rural land in KwaZulu-Natal to fall under the control of Zwelithini.

Buthelezi’s efforts resulted in Zwelithini’s control over the province’s rural land being affirmed by the Ingonyama Trust Act, declaring the king as the sole trustee of the Ingonyama Trust Board (ITB), which currently controls about 3 000 hectares of land in the province.

However, ITB later found itself under attack for, amongst other things, its refusal to issue residents occupying land under its control with title deeds.

A report submitted to Parliament by a panel of experts, led by former deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe, recommended that the Ingonyama Act giving ITB powers over tribal land should either be amended or repealed.

In response to the panel’s recommendation, in 2018 Zwelithini called an Imbizo attended by throngs of Zulu-speaking people in Ulundi.

At that gathering, the king threatened that the KZN province would secede from the rest of South Africa should Parliament approve the panel’s recommendations. Negative sentiments against Zwelithini also revolved around the fact that despite his Ingonyama Trust generating close to R100 million annually, he continued to receive a R60-million annual allowance from the KZN provincial government.

At the time of his death there were mounting calls from both national government and the National Assembly for Zwelithini to intervene at the ITB, which is currently facing allegations of mismanagement and corruption.

During his reign, Zwelithini married six wives and fathered 28 children.

SUV challenge at the wild side I

F you love SUV adventure thrills, then the Wild Coast Sun was the place to be when they gave insight on the popular Eastern Cape SUV Challenge recently.

Among the many dignitaries in attendance, was Miss South Africa Shudufhadzo Musida.

The Eastern Cape SUV Challenge is a unique and engaging initiative, a social innovation that was launched in 2018 by the premier of the province Oscar Mabuyane.

It serves as a means to facilitate coherent engagement between civil society, government and corporate SA. It seeks to promote road safety, tourism, social cohesion and development by mobilizing communities, civic organisations, inclu-

sive of traditional leadership structures, donor organisation’s and the private sector to partner in a social justice movement.

Using SUVs, the initiative redefines the off road adventure thrill by taking participants to the face of the real Eastern Cape.

Visiting identified areas, the participants interact with communities bringing them messages of hope and salvation and in some instances, relevant goods and services to address their challenges.
