FARM WORKERS demand salary increase NTANDOYENKOSI DLAMINI
A
group of angry farm workers recently blockaded Izotsha Road demanding that their employer increase their wages. The protest started earlier last week and is still ongoing. The disgruntled workers rejected the minimum wage implemented by their employer and demanded that their employer gives them a 10% salary increase. The farm is located in Izotsha. Speaking to Fever, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) South Coast branch organiser, Rose Mahaye said workers will not go back to work until they get what they are protesting for. She said workers deserve the 10% wage increase because they work very hard. She said these workers allegedly work from 7 am to 1 am the following day with no transport
to go home. She added that one of the workers was injured during a night shift and nothing was allegedly done about the employee’s injury. “Last year, as the union we decided to put forward a few demands like the 10% salary increment and a thirteenth cheque but the employer said they are not going to do anything as they have implemented the minimum wage,” said Mahaye. Due to them not reaching an understanding, she added, they declared a dispute with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). “But even then, no one wanted to give in so we got documents that allowed workers to embark on a protected strike so that no worker can be fired just because they were protesting,” she said. She added that a minimum wage is not a living wage. Mahaye also called on labour minister Thulas Nxesi to fight for the rights of farm workers.
In a government gazette published on Monday, Nxesi said that the national minimum wage is now R23.19 for each ordinary hour worked, adding that the change will take effect from March 1. Mahaye said the minimum wage undermines the rights of workers. She added that should the employer further hesitate to agree to the workers’ demands, they will stage a big march where the union in the province will go to the South Coast. Comment from the farm owner had not been received at the time of going to press.Meanwhile,KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said police were at the scene to monitor the situation. “We can confirm that there is protest action outside a farm in Izotsha near Port Shepstone where 200 community members have gathered. There are no injuries or damages reported,” said Mbele.
