The South Coast Water Action Group on their visit to the St Helen's Rock Pump Station.

HILE some south coast residents have been trying to survive without water for nine weeks, the South Coast Water Action Group (SCWAG) is currently embarking on a series of initiatives to find and implement immediate, short-term and long-term sustainable solutions to the water problem. The group consists of South Coasters from different fields of study who are trying to do something about the water problem in the area. Last week, members of the SCWAG technical team visited the St Helen’s Rock pump station where they found that an electrical output used to pump water to Hibberdene was not connected properly. The action group said residents of Hibberdene have been at more risk of contracting diseases and Covid-19 because of their inability to wash their hands. “At the upper water level of the St Helen’s pump, the electrical output from a diesel generator, used for powering the winches to raise the pumps from the water’s edge, is not connected to the winch motors. “This is seen as a relatively quick repair which will not only provide protection for the pumps in the event of a flood, but can also provide additional backup power for pumping in the event of any extended Eskom power outage,” said the group. An additional pump-house needs to be installed to carry two additional pumps for standby operation, they said. The group said because St Helen’s Rock pumps at approximately 100 mega-litres per day, it will need to be almost doubled and will also require additional infrastructure. “Re-commissioning of the gravity-feed pipeline from Oribi Gorge to Boboyi is considered an urgent first step in assuring water supply security

mentation, ideally as a public-private partnership. “The causes of water problems are multiple but can be addressed with ease if well managed. Ex Ugu employees have come forward offering to work alongside the SCWAG team and Ugu teams to assist,” said the group.

for the system. This pipeline was erroneously decommissioned some years ago, a decision known to be a poor one at the time. “Re-commissioning of this pipeline is seen to be a doable, fast and cost-effective operation, which will result in significant cost savings on electricity usage as St Helen’s output requirement
will be reduced,” said SCWAG. The group said before the water crisis in Hibberdene drags on, SCWAG will develop their findings from their site visits, into a detailed plan to be tabled in discussions with Ugu Municipality and the Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Lindiwe Sisulu for urgent imple-
