‘UNRECOGNISED’ courses leave graduates concerned

WELL known Afrikaans contributor to the South Coast Fever, Johan Pretorius said his farewell to readers in the paper last week.

The decision to end the contribution came as a result of the effects of Covid-19 and the impact it had on the publication.

However, after careful consideration and listening to our readers, the Fever has decided to continue this relationship to cater for our Afrikaans readers.

RADUATES from the Mawawa Foundation in Port Shepstone which offers Early Childhood Development (ECD) education and training have voiced their agony at finding themselves in possession of a qualification that is not allegedly recognised in the industry.

One of the graduates, Siphokazi Ngesi ex-

plained that they are convinced the certificates issued by the foundation are not endorsed by a recognisable body such as the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) because not even one of the students who graduated has been accepted in the industry.

“Before enrolling, Nozipho Ntshanga who runs the foundation, said after we graduate some students will be placed in hospitals and others will be placed in schools to teach Grade RR,”

said Ngesi.

Responding to the allegations, chairperson of Mawawa Foundation Nozipho Ntshanga asked if the certificates are fake why are there students currently doing their in-service training? “The certificates are approved by the Skills Academy.

Every student is allowed to collect a letter from us requesting practicals in the industry.

Foundation’s ‘unrecognised’ courses leave graduates concerned “They are fighting with me instead of going out to find work like [student] Ntombifuthi Qwabe,” said Ntshanga.

Speaking to Fever, Qwabe said she is not currently doing an in-service training. “I approached the principal of Inala Primary in Umzumbe who told me that my certificate is not legitimate and that is why they can’t help me,” said Qwabe.

She added that she then approached a local day care for work experience where she was accepted.

“I felt bad for not being transparent about my certificate, so I came clean and showed it to the lady in charge and that was my last day at the day care. Ntshanga is not being truthful because I have the same concerns as the students (over 60) I graduated with,” said Qwabe.

The foundation’s former facilitator Sibusiso Mkhize said he was also sceptical about the legitimacy of the certificates because it would be ready a day or two after the students graduate. Also, he mentioned that some certificates would have errors and that made him question the institution endorsing the certificates.

Skills Academy chief executive officer (CEO) Jan Badenhorst said the chairperson of the foundation is not being truthful.

“If they are offering ECD courses, it is not possible for Skills Academy to accredit those courses because we are not an accrediting body.

“As far as I know, we also do not endorse their courses,” said Baden-

horst.

He added that he checked all emails and contact lists and couldn’t find the foundation or its representatives at all.

The certificates awarded to students illustrate credit and endorsement from the Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP Seta).

However Jacob Dikobo of ETDP Seta said Mawawa Foundation is not one of the registered providers on their system.

“The student with the ID number listed on the certificate is not on our system. The signatures on the certificate look suspicious.

“The Seal on the certificate also looks suspicious and the registration number at the bottom of the certificate belongs to a different KZN provider, and not Mawawa,” said Dikobo.

He added that at face value and subject to confirmation after checking the original document, it looks like the certificate is a photoshopped document. “I would like to meet with the students and if our initial suspicions are confirmed, we will open a criminal case,” said Dikobo.

The Fever has made several attempts to get a hold of Ntshanga after comments were received from the Skills Academy and ETDP Seta representatives, but she has not been available or responded to any queries.The students have been advised to contact Seta to proceed with the investigations.

Ugu Municipality’s high expenditure in the spotlight NTANDOYENKOSI DLAMINI >>ntandoyenkosi.dlamini@media24.com UGU District Municipality was recently named one of the top three municipalities with the highest Covid-19 expenditure in the province.

The municipality’s Covid-19 expenditure which is sitting at R28 876 322 accounted for the period between March 15, 2020 and September 11.

Most of the municipality’s shortcomings were revealed when KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Sipho Hlomuka recently assigned a team of senior officials to table before the council a report on the forensic investigations.

They investigated allegations of fraud, corruption, maladministration and statutory non-compliance in the municipality.

The report revealed findings of fraud, corruption and maladministration as well as irregular, unauthorised and fruitless expenditure involving both former and existing

officials and one former councillor.

Furthermore, the report made a number of findings against senior officials within the municipality regarding their failure to follow Supply Chain Management (SCM) policies in the awarding of tenders and failure to fulfil functions in relation to the performance of municipal bid committees.

As a result, those actions consequently contributed to the irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure incurred by the municipality.

Also, the report is recommending disciplinary, civil and criminal proceedings to be initiated against those that are implicated in the findings.

Commenting on these reports, Hlomuka said: “These forensic reports are proof of our department’s commitment to good and clean governance.

“As government, we are committed to ensuring that our municipalities spend each and every rand on the real needs of our communities.

“We are fighting maladministration, fraud and corruption in mu-

Ugu council was given 21 days within which to table the report before full council, deal with specific details contained in the re-port and thereafter report to the MEC for Cogta on the remedial actions.

Yesterday, September 7 Cogta portfolio committee in the national assembly, led by chairperson Muthambi held a meeting at the Council Chambers with Ugu council as part of their oversight programme and on the agenda was the status of municipalities under Section 139 1(b) intervention.

The department has directed municipalities to ensure that mayors table detailed reports on Covid19 expenditure to councils for adoption and that the expenditure is to be included in the Special Adjustments Budget.

Furthermore, council was asked to assess expenditure on extraordinary measures introduced as a result of Covid-19 lockdown.

OUTH COAST resident Bill Brooks has raised concerns regarding municipal workers who were repairing a pipe leak six weeks ago on Kloof Road, Southport and left it incomplete.

Brooks explained that the incomplete repair has thrown the safety of the public out of

the window.

“Gone are the days when artisans and his fellow workers had confidence in their work or do work with pride in accordance with specifications.

“This pipe leak was fixed six weeks ago, but no standard procedures were followed by bedding the repair, testing and back filling.

The contractor or Ugu just left it,” said Brooks, adding that they never complete a job.

Furthermore, Brooks described the repair as menacing.

“Where is the supervision and control over these repairs? This is a typical Ugu [municipality] repair,” said Brooks.

Commenting on the quality of Ugu Municipality’s repairs Karen Cronje said Ugu’s workmanship is shocking as nothing is ever completed and there is no management overseeing the repairs.

HE Rotary Clubs of Hibiscus Coast and Port Shepstone recently received a donation of 20 000 books which are available for distribution.

The good Samaritan behind the generous donation is United States based organisation the Second Wind Foundation.

Secretary of the clubs, Anne Thompson explained that because Rotary International is a worldwide organisation, the books were donated to them through the Second Wind Foundation.

“The books are used or out of date educational or library books to be donated to impoverished schools, libraries and similar organisations,” said Thompson, adding that they range from fiction to non-fiction, children’s education, teacher aids, adult and children’s novels, in English and other languages too.

She emphasised that anyone may request a donation and they will distribute far and wide in the province.

“There is a great assortment of books and we are currently assessing what we have received (there were 42 pallets in a 12 metre container) before we can start the donation,” said Thompson.

The secretary also mentioned that this is a joint project between the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast (Margate and Uvongo) and the Rotary Club of Port Shepstone.

Furthermore, Thompson highlighted that at this stage they are not seeking any further donations. “But who knows

Cyclist plans to empower the homeless Khoza KZN chair of Mashaba’s ActionSA

ROFESSIONAL Cyclist Thubalethu Shange is challenging Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to build a rehabilitation centre for homeless people who sleep outside the Port Shepstone Post Office in an attempt to make money by queueing for those who will go to the Post Office the following day.

Shange explained that should the municipality establish this centre, he will volunteer his services as a cycling development officer to teach them the sport and also help them steer away from drugs.

“The centre can be an existing one, but there should give recreational activities to keep drug users sober, strong and healthy,” said Shange.

The cyclist explained that he would love to be part of an initiative like that because he has noticed that majority of the homeless, are actually very talented.

“It doesn’t have to be limited to cycling, they can include other sporting codes such as swimming, soccer, cricket, rugby, hockey, boxing, karate and more,” said Shange.

He emphasised that because of the high rate of unemployment plaguing the country, he believes talent has the

“I also hope that the country can start supporting sport as a way of making a living. In that way, our villages and townships will be the safest places people would wish to travel to,” said

VETERAN KZN politician and activist Makhosi Khoza has been appointed KZN provincial chairperson of Herman Mashaba’s new party, ActionSA. Khoza, who was an ANC MP, left the party in disgust with then-president Jacob Zuma, whom she called a disgrace. She went on to launch the African Democratic Change party in 2017 but resigned the following year amid allegations of making “dictatorial decisions”.

“My bigger mission is beyond the confines of politics and political parties,” she said at the time.

Another former ANC MP, Vytjie Mentor, has been appointed Western Cape regional chairperson, and former DA Gauteng leader John Moodey is the Gauteng chairperson.

Party president Mashaba made the announcements at the weekend.

Moodey resigned from the DA at the beginning of September 2020 while he was a candidate in the party’s leadership race.

The DA accused him of framing a “senior parliamentary leader” in a sex-for-jobs scandal while Moodey claimed party leaders were purging members who dissented from the status quo.

After leaving the ANC, Mentor joined

the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) in March 2019 before announcing that she would join Mashaba’s movement.

Mentor has claimed Zuma offered her a Cabinet post if she favoured the Guptas, which he denied.

Yesterday Mashaba also announced that advocate Gillian Benson had joined ActionSA. Benson was an acting judge when she posted an expletive-ridden comment to Facebook about Covid-19 lockdown regulations in May, complaining about “Cyril and his goons”.

“What I find alarming is the manner in which Gill Benson, and many like her, have been treated for airing their anger about the management of the lockdown, and, the callous manner in which businesses and freedoms were treated,” said Mashaba.

He said the party is also considering running in eThekwini, Cape Town, Mangaung and Nelson Mandela Bay. The Electoral Commission of SA recently rejected ActionSA’s application to register as a political party, due to the similarity of its logo to the Party of Action and its logo’s use of the South African flag. Business travellers from neighbouring countries will also get special treatment when it comes to testing.

Every person who enters SA must, on arrival, present a negative coronavirus test no more than 72 hours old. But for businesspeople from the 15 other Southern African Development Community (Sadc) countries, those test certificates will be considered valid for 14 days afterwards.

That means those who need to cross the border regularly will have multiple entry as long as they meet the 72-hour requirement the first time they enter, Motsoaledi’s department confirmed to Business Insider South Africa.

The Department of Home Affairs also confirmed that travellers who transit through South Africa do not need to produce a negative coronavirus test in order to pass through.

It also said the airline doesn’t matter, when it comes to the red list, only the country from which a tourist is coming, or through which they have passed.

The intention remains to update the red list every two weeks.

BUSINESS people seeking entry into South Africa will get special treatment at borders, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has confirmed, beyond not being subjected to South Africa’s red list.

That list, of countries from which leisure travellers are not welcome, has never applied to those travelling for business, on the basis that SA needs all the economic activity it can get.

Policymakers seem intent to maintain that stance, so that South Africa’s borders will remain open to those travelling on business regardless of how severe the coronavirus pandemic gets in their country of origin.

Businesspeople who travel from or via high-risk countries on the red list are supposed to apply for entry into SA before they depart — but if they don’t, they’ll be able to beg for entry when reaching the border.

“Immigration officers have been instructed to apply the requirements with a measure of flexibility in order to allow applications for business travel to be lodged at the ports of entry if and when necessary and await the outcome before entry into the republic is allowed,” Motsoaledi said in a statement.

HE increased snake activity this spring has had James Wittstock, reptile curator at Crocworld Conservation Centre, busy with a number of snake rescue calls – two of which were mambas.

Last week, team members from Umzinto Water Works reported sightings of a black mamba in a bathroom. Wittstock managed to carefully remove the 2.45m male snake and take it back to the centre before it was released. A few days later, he was called out to Renishaw farm in Scottburgh by another Crocworld Conservation Centre employee who happened to be on site.

“There were men cutting the grass and they noticed a green mamba coiled around a reed, at about eye-level,” recalled Wittstock, who took the opportunity to educate the workmen about

More than 75% of South Africans pass away without a valid Will in place, causing devastating consequences for their families and dependants.

To help combat this statistic, the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) promotes National Wills week, every year, and participating attorneys offer their Will-drafting services for basic Wills at no cost to clients.

Wills Week is normally in September, but due to Covid-19 and lockdown, the LSSA has officially announced that National Wills Week will be from 26 – 30 October this year.

The reality is that most people know they need a Will, but statistics show that South Africans are notorious procrastinators.

In a recent survey we conducted, we asked people why they haven’t got their Wills

in order. The results?

•43% of respondents said: “I just haven’t got around to it”.

•27% said: “I’m not sure where to get my Will done”.

•21% said: “I think it might be expensive to get a Will”.

•Only 9% of respondents said they think they don’t need a Will.

So, with more than 75% of South African’s passing away without a Will in place, it’s not necessarily an awareness issue – it’s an education issue. People need to know what devastating consequences their families and dependants will face if they were to pass away without a Will.

1.You forfeit the opportunity to decide who inherits what and your Estate is distributed according to South African law. This means people whom you may not have wanted to benefit from your Estate may inherit your assets and family heirlooms.

2.Your Partner may be left with nothing if you are not married, or your Will is not updated from a previous marriage.

3.Your Children’s inheritance could pass to the Government Guardian’s Fund or appointed Guardian rather than to a Trust that will ensure your wishes for them are carried out.

4.Family feuds often occur when family members argue over the distribution of your Estate if your final wishes are not clearly documented in a Will.

5.Winding up your Estate can take years – without a Will appointing a professional Executor, the Government is essentially in control of the process.

NTERESSANTE en gedenkwaardige dinge gebeur natuurlik met elke mens in sy of haar lewe. Dit het so-pas met die uwe gebeur.

Nadat ek vas oortuig was dat verlede week se rubriek die einde van my jarelange loopbaan in die publikasiemedia was, moet ek vandeesweek weer ‘n rubriek skryf. Die rede? Versoeke is uit die Suidkus-gemeenskap tot Media 24 om tog nie die Afrikaanse bydraes in die South Coast Fever te beëindig nie. Veral omdat daar so min indien enige Afrikaans in koerante in hierdie provinsie is noudat die verspreiding van Beeld ook hier gestaak is. Media 24 het goedgunstiglik ingestem dat hierdie Afrikaanse bladsy in die Fever kan voortbestaan, en my dank namens die Afrikaanse gemeenskap aan diegene wat die vertoë gerig het. ‘n Normaalweg baie betroubare voëltjie het my vertel dat die ou strydros Abrie Spies iets daarmee te doen gehad het. Nogmaals dankie.

Toe die nuus aan my oorgedra is, moes ek haastig ‘n tema soek. Dieselfde dag is die uwe ‘n paar gekruide woorde op Facebook toegesnou, en net daarna per e-pos deur Afrikaans.com ingelig dat vloek.co.za tans besig met navorsing om te bepaal wat die prototipiese vloekwoorde en taboe-uitdrukkings in Afrikaans is, met die volgende verduideliking: ‘Met ander woorde die bekendste, frekwentste en prominentste woorde wat binne sommige kontekste deur verskillende mense as taboe ervaar sou kon word.’ Afrikaans.com se boodskap aan Afrikaanssprekendes is: ‘Ons het jou hulp nodig!’ Soos die Franse sê ‘Voila’. Daar het ek ‘n rubriektema.

Afrikaans.com sê indien mense aan hierdie vraelys deelneem, staan hulle boonop die kans om tydens die

gelukstrekking aan die begin van Desember 2020 R1 000 met die komplimente van Afrikaans.com te wen. Diegene wat belangstel, kan besonderhede op die webwerf kry.

Die hele aangeleentheid, en veral die beledigings wat my toegesnou is, het die uwe laat wonder waar die grense van gekruide taal lê, en waarom Suid-Afrikaners mekaar so maklik skel en vloek. Veral wanneer onderwerpe soos die politiek en Donald Trump onder bespreking is. Op die internet het ek besonderhede opgespoor van ‘n seminaar wat op 15 November verlede jaar deur die nimlike Virtuele Instituut vir Afrikaans gehou is. Die tema was “Vloek met flair (en voorbehoud)”. Dit het natuurlik paar wenkbroue laat lig, maar deelnemers is sommer vroeg-vroeg deur VivA se uitvoerende bestuurder, Marlie Coetzee, daarop gewys dat die geleentheid geskep is om bestekopname van die taalverskynsel te maak, nie om vloekfees van stapel te stuur nie. Die gesprek oor die saak het dus nie die oogmerk gehad om gevloek goed te praat of om kru taal en taboe-onderwerpe te normaliseer nie, maar juis om vas te stel waar die grense lê in samelewing wat dikwels wil maak asof daar geen grense meer is nie.

Die gesprek is ingelei deur prof. Gerhard van Huyssteen, taalkundige aan die Noordwes-Universiteit, die stigter van vloek.co.za en leier van bg. navorsingsprojek wat met behulp van finansiering van onder meer die NWU en die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns onderneem word. Op vraag uit die gehoor waarom hy die navorsing aangepak het, het professor Van Huyssteen gesê dat dit byvoorbeeld in die veld van kunsmatige intelligensie nod-

ig is om te kan onderskei tussen “gewone” taal en vloektaal. Toepassings soos Alexa en Siri moet vloekwoorde kan herken, en dit kan net gebeur as dié woorde in die programmatuur gemerk word. Die oogmerk van vloek.co.za is om uiteindelik vloekwoordeboek (die Afrikaanse Vloekpedia) saam te stel waarin gebruikers ook aanduiding sal kan kry van die taboewaarde van vloekwoorde – alle vloekwoorde is per slot van rekening nie ewe aanstootgewend nie.

Mense uit verskillende dissiplines het aan ‘n paneelbespreking deelgeneem, en die beriggewer oor die seminaar het geskryf dit was duidelik dat kru taal allermins algemeen-aanvaarde ding is. Gedagtig aan gesprekke op die internet was die uwe se eerste reaksie ‘You could have fooled me’.

HE Year 2020 is still considered as the year to celebrate of nurses worldwide and as a result 50 nurses from Port Shepstone Hospital participated in a 3km walk from the hospital to Kapenta Bay Hotel recently.

According to the hospital’s public relations officer Phumza Morai the theme for the walk was ‘Walk the talk’, and it was used to strengthen the nurses’ resolve to promote, highlight good nursing practices and excellent patient-centered culture when carrying out their day-today duties.

“Our nurses have shown that once again that they do not only pay lip service to good customer care, but they are also more than prepared to walk the talk,” said Morai.

During the walk nursing manager, Thembi Mkhize urged nurses to persevere, and continue to treat patients with care, love, respect, and to always advocate for them.

“As professionals, we should at all times be true ambassadors of ethics and professionalism by ensuring fairness, truthfulness, accountability and confidentiality in our practices as enshrined in the Nursing Code of Ethics,” she said.

Also, the nurses described the walk as a refreshing experience because of the weather and sea breeze.

“After the walk, nursing staff and their managers participated in various physical activities, including games that promote teamwork. They enjoyed a healthy snack, and then walked back to the hospital to put their words into practice,” said Morai.

Residents all over KZN are once again embracing the freedom to exercise and enjoy their wonderful suburban parks and other leisure areas.

According to Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Fidelity ADT, while the warmer weather and lifting of restrictions is good news, residents must bear personal safety in mind at all times when enjoying the outdoors.

“Crime has steadily increased as lockdown restrictions have decreased and what we are seeing at the moment is a lot of opportunistic crime – which is more than likely a sign of the desperate situations thousands of people find themselves in as a result of job losses and other pandemic-related factors,” she said.

Leisure areas, like parks and dams, can be hotspots for these types of crimes, she added.

“If you go out for a jog the last thing on your mind is probably being confronted by a violent criminal, but it does unfortunately happen. Other instances where people can be vulnerable to crime outdoors are in fairly isolated parks and on hiking trails, for example.

“Cyclists are also at risk, often because of the one thing which brings them the most joy – their bikes – and even dog walkers can be at risk.”

According to Hattingh, criminals who carry out these types of attacks often operate in pairs and will grab what they can in the frenzy of the attack. “The obvious items they are after include cellphones, running shoes, bicycles, jewellery and cash. It is indeed a horrible thought that going for a bit of exercise in your new running gear can end you in a world of trouble, but it is a reality in South Africa,” she said.

An exciting addition to the existing RYCS portfolio of events, the 2020 Heritage Day celebrations got off to an early start with just over 15 000 runners nationwide taking on the much anticipated FNB RYCS Heritage Day Virtual Run. HE Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has confirmed the race date for #Comrades2021.

Following the outcome of discussions held on September 28 between CMA with ASA and KZNA, it was confirmed that the 2021 Comrades Marathon has been scheduled to take place on

June 13 meaning it will remain unchanged from the 2nd Sunday in June on which it has been staged for the past several years.

The CMA Board has also confirmed that next year’s 95th Comrades Marathon will be a Down Run, starting at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and finishing at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadi-
