Some relief for small businesses NTANDOYENKOSI DLAMINI >>ntandoyenkosi.dlamini@media24.com
M
uch-needed relief is on the way for spaza shops, the informal sector as well as Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). This is according to the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Ravi Pillay. Pillay said this in Port Shepstone last week when he visited the Ugu South Coast to assess the damage caused in the recent unrest. “I am in Port Shepstone to receive the reports from Ray Nkonyeni and uMzumbe municipalities. In all three municipalities (including Umuziwabantu Municipality), they have had significant damage. In Harding in particular, some major stores, a lot of SMMEs and a number of informal traders were affected. Ezinqoleni and Port Edward as well were hard hit,” said Pillay. The MEC added that in Umzumbe, about three central areas were affected including the Turton Shopping Centre. Pillay said he was inspired by the unity shown by the municipalities and all stakeholders who are determined to recover. “In Harding, they are expecting Shoprite to open within the next few days and the other major stores are already in the process of reconstruction. Emphasis will be on SMMEs, spaza shops and the informal sector, we want to give them relief as soon as possible and that is why collecting this data is important for the national government to do the necessary calculations,” said Pillay, adding that they want to see how they can help. “If we can’t help everyone, at least assist those who were uninsured. We are also meeting with municipalities to encourage them to also assist no matter how little the help is,” said Pillay. Furthermore, Pillay met with Umdoni Municipality Mayor Sibongile Khathi and business owners within Umzinto to assess

Meanwhile, in terms of nationally, National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NAFCOC) spokesperson Refilwe Monageng said black-owned businesses and SMMEs need more help in addition to government’s economic recovery measures announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa recently. In a statement, Monageng said they are appealing to government to increase their efforts in providing extensive relief to workers, employers and communities as soon as possible. “We are deeply saddened by the destruction of businesses, in particular the small business and black entrepreneurial commu-
nity, that have already been struggling for months to survive the Covid-19 crisis. There are many more options available to the government to further support through comprehensive tax relief, debt amnesty provisions and even grants,” Monageng said in the statement. The statement also highlighted that many black businesses have been excluded from applying for government or private sector support through the pandemic, because they do not have the resources to supply the basic paperwork required for the applications. “The reality is that many black entrepreneurs were already living from hand-tomouth, and in no position even to produce the basic tax clearance, or the other compliance paperwork frequently required to access the limited relief available. The livelihoods of potentially millions of South Africans are at stake - we cannot fail our people,” said Monageng. NAFCOC is also calling on business and industry associations to actively engage and collaborate with small and black-owned businesses to help support them during this trying period.
