GU District Municipality is embarking on a R14 million project where it will connect to the Eastern Cape’s power supply which will allow for more water to be extracted from the Umthavuna River for purification and distribution to Ezingolweni, KwaXolo and Southbroom.

According to the KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), the project will be funded by Cogta and it is being implemented with Eskom.

This was some of the feedback given to South Coast residents when KZN MEC for Cogta Sipho Hlomuka returned to the Ugu district to address

residents on the steps being taken to resolve service delivery issues within the district.

Last week, Hlomuka visited the South Coast following a number of water protests across the region which led to vandalism and the closure of the N2.

On Tuesday, March 30 Hlomuka met with residents of KwaMadlala Ward 14, Maygog in Wards 13 and 15 and Ezinqoleni, Ward 32.

Addressing residents, Hlomuka said currently, the Ugu district is implementing a number of interventions that are both short and long-term which include the upgrade of the KwaXolo Bulk water supply scheme which is being implemented to increase supply to KwaXolo and Izingolweni network.

Some of the other interventions they are looking into include: . Exploration of ground water systems (boreholes and springs) to augment the inadequate bulk capacity of the Bhobhoyi Northern system; . Supply of water on a rotational basis with the prior communication of schedules to ensure that communities are kept abreast consistently; . Bulk Water Supply to be augmented through the Mhlabashane Supply Scheme based on agreement with Umgeni Water to increase production capacity to 7.0 Ml/day in Louisiana and Maygong areas and the KwaMadlala Pump station upgrade.

NTANDOYENKOSI DLAMINI OLITICAL parties in the province have warned KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala and the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC, Sipho Hlomuka that they sitting on a ticking time bomb.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the Premier and Hlomuka to immediately place Ugu District Municipality under Administration in terms of Section 139 of the Constitution.

This comes after disgruntled residents took to the streets and damaged both public and private properties while demanding water provision from Ugu Municipality.

Last week, when the party wrote to Zikalala and Hlomuka regarding water woes in Ugu, the DA warned the Premier and the MEC that unless they took firm action, residents would soon take matters into their own hands.

DA KZN spokesperson on Cogta Chris Pappas said the DA is deeply concerned by the events which have unfolded as a result of this municipality’s ongoing failure to deliver even the most basic of services for years on end.

“While we fully acknowledge the terrible plight of this community - in particular the ongoing lack of access to water during the Covid19 health pandemic, damage to property is

not a viable solution to the problem,” said Pappas, adding that the entire South Coast is already under severe economic strain as a result of shocking management at a local and district government level.

Furthermore, Pappas said this, has in turn, led to a huge drop in tourism numbers, which could cause job losses and bringing untold daily misery to thousands of people.

“Last week, the DA wrote to the Premier and MEC Hlomuka with a final demand for real intervention in the ongoing Ugu water crisis, within 14 days. The DA has not received a response or an acknowledgement to these letters,” he said.

Pappas added that the DA believes that this should also include Umgeni Water taking of the bulk supply of water from Ugu municipality, in particular the Boboyi and Umthamvuna plants.

“It is time for the entire Ugu community to unite and mount pressure on government.

This must be done through civic, legal and political action against the incapable state.

“If the ANC will not listen and act, then residents must force them to, so that an orderly administration, that will provide efficient and effective water and sanitation to the people, is restored,” said Pappas.

The EFF in the region also said it had previously warned that the issue of water and poor

service delivery will lead to an uprising.

“The EFF in Ugu notes the protest action which came at a time as Ugu District government under ANC leadership failed dismally to provide proper water and sanitation to our people, the overall service delivery is very poor in the district,” said the party, adding that although they understand the frustration of residents, they condemn elements of criminality in these strikes.

SAPS have issued statement saying that a number of people have been arrested and charged in Ezinqoleni and Betania for public violence and other related charges after engaging in protests last week.

Some have appeared in court and released on a warning, while others are yet to appear.

“These persons also face the impact of having a criminal record which could affect their possibility of finding employment. The danger also lies in sustaining injuries during the protest action.

“The public are urged to refrain from such violent protest action. The principles laid down by the Constitution regulate protest action and are limited within certain boundaries.

“Destroying infrastructure and looting are evidence of criminal behaviour and those persons participating in such action will face the legal consequences when they are arrested,” read the statement.

GUN SALUTE leaves one

ZN police said people who are involved in gun salutes during funerals will be arrested as they pose a danger to bystanders. This comes after a 38-year-old man, Teaspoon Petros Cele, was shot dead during a gun salute at a funeral in Gamalakhe on the South Coast over the weekend.

According to sources, Cele was attending a colleague’s funeral when we was shot.

Ward 27 councillor Mdumiseni Cele said the news of the tragic passing of Cele came as a huge shock to the community of Gamalakhe and the Port Shepstone region. “We are saddened by the loss of a young and contributing member of our society. We wish comfort to his family members, friends and colleagues. We will always celebrate and honour his life. Our sincere condolences,” said Cele.

The deceased was an employee of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, a karateka and a dancer.

A source, who did not want to be named, said the issue of gun salutes in Ward 27 has been problematic. “I am now afraid of attending funerals in this ward. A while back we attended a tavern owner’s funeral who worked for Ugu Municipality, a person in the crowd was also shot during a gun salute, fortunately he did not die, but he was critically injured. Now, Teaspoon has been shot on the forehead; they really need to stop this thing of firing gunshots in funerals because last Saturday was a disaster,

Cele’s sister Sizakele Lungile Cele, says she does not know how she will prepare for the funeral because she does not have money.

“I am at a loss and my heart is shattered because Teaspoon and I were the only remaining children from parents who are still alive. I was his last hope and he was mine. The manner in which he died breaks my heart. Even now, I don’t even have a cent, I don’t know who to call or ask for assistance, things are bad,” she said.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the police have arrested a 35-yearold suspect.

“The incident happened on March 27, at a funeral held in the KwaXaba area in Gamalakhe. It is alleged that as the body was being lowered into the ground, a 35-year-old man fired into the air which was when one round struck a 38-year-old man in the forehead. He was rushed to the Gamalakhe Clinic for treatment,” said Mbele, adding that the suspect handed himself to Gamalakhe SAPS as well as his licensed firearm.

“A case of murder is being investigated after the victim died of his injuries. The suspect has been charged and will appear in court shortly.

Police will arrest all those who are involved in gun salutes as it poses a danger to bystanders who are attending the funeral,” said Mbele.

Cele’s funeral service will be at the Bhambayi Sportsfield, Ward 27 in Gamalakhe on Saturday, April 3.

HE owner of Umsizi Vervet Monkeys Rescue Centre on the South Coast was charged for illegally keeping 100 vervet monkeys on Wednesday and was given a R1 500 WOU LD LI KE TO WI S H E VE RYON E A fine.

This comes after the owner was given a 21-day notice by the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (Ezemvelo) and the SPCA on February 4, to remove the monkeys.

According to Musa Mntambo of Ezemvelo they worked together with the SPCA in successfully seizing the monkeys.

“The consulting team that assisted in confiscating all monkeys, first walked around the property viewing all occupied outdoor enclosures which each housed between five to approximately 30 individual vervet monkeys. The monkeys were kept in five different enclosures,” said Mntambo.

He added that in one enclosure next to the kitchen, there were multiple monkeys housed in an extremely small (3.5m x 2m) and dark outdoor area with

no sun availability and no perches.

“Each troop other than the smaller groups were split into two large boxes with a capacity between six and 10 individuals.

The boxes are 1.5m x 1.2m x 1m with a steel frame as to ensure the safety of the monkeys while being transported,” he said.

Ezemvelo’s District conservation manager in eThekwini, Dr Roy Jones expressed his appreciation to the SPCA and all officials involved in the rescue of the monkeys and further warned that Ezemvelo will continue to confiscate animals that are kept without an official permit.

MDONI local municipality honoured 30 pupils for their sterling results for the 2020 academic year in a prestigious awards ceremony held at the Scottburgh Town Hall on Monday, March 29.

According to Umdoni municipality’s spokesperson, Sphelele Cele,

the awards ceremony was an effort to illustrate support and cultivate education in the Umdoni area.

“The pride and joy of Umdoni were awarded certificates of recognition and brand new laptops with bags to assist them during their tenure of tertiary,” said Cele.

Umdoni’s deputy mayor, Siyabonga Khwela, congratulated the pupils for withstanding a turbulence-filled year due to the unprec-

edented Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is indeed an honour for our municipality to conduct such a ceremony where we emphasise that education is also in the apex of our community development initiatives.

Such gestures by the municipality must serve as motivation to the current class and lower grades to work with determination to also achieve excellent academic results,” said Khwela.

Cele said the awards ceremony was also supported by the education department’s Scottburgh Circuit office.

“The circuit officer manager, Mr Reddy, conveyed appreciation to the municipality for its efforts in developing education in Umdoni.

Mr Reddy further thanked teachers, teacher unions and parents for their collaborative efforts in ensuring the year becomes a success re-

gardless of its trials and tribulations,” said Cele.

Umdoni municipality mayor, Sibongile Khathi, said the municipality will continue to plant a seed towards ensuring an improved level of education in the community.

“We will achieve this through ensuring that education remains at the apex of our priorities in building better communities in Umdoni,” said Khathi.

Organisation receives water tank donation NTANDOYENKOSI DLAMINI >>ntandoyenkosi.dlamini@media24.com WITH the Covid-19 pandemic being harsh on non-profit organisations, the lack of water on the South Coast has also made it difficult for most NPOs to function.

However, local organisation, Ignite Revolution, will no longer worry about water outages after it received a generous donation of a water tank from Sisters for Humanity.

Ignite Revolution is an organisation which aims to meet the needs of the community and also provides free counselling services to school pupils.

According to Ignite’s founder Jessica Naicker, they al-

so run various hot meal programmes and soup kitchens for children, people in rural areas and the homeless in Port Shepstone where they provide over 1000 meals monthly. Naicker said they are extremely grateful for the donation of the water tank because they are constantly having issues with water supply which compounds their problems.

“Having a Jojo tank will now enable us to run our programmes uninterrupted by water woes. We would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to Sisters for Humanity on the huge blessing of a Jojo tank with a stand. We cannot fully express the impact this will have and how many lives it would make a impact on,” said Naicker.

New darts association in town MARGATE Darts Association (MDA) is a newly launched darts association on the South Coast.

MDA will be affiliated with the KZN Darts and South African Darts.

The playing venue for MDA is the Douglas Mitchell Sports Bar and Restaurant on 12 Smuts Avenue, Uvongo.

MDA extends an invitation to all those interested in playing darts to join MDA. The association is committed to broadening its player base and will like to see new teams, youth and women join. The mix of experienced and new

players will ensure an exciting future for the game of darts.

MDA will be holding its AGM on Thursday, April 15, at the Douglas Mitchell Sports Bar and Restaurant from 7pm. All interested persons are more than welcome to attend.

Margate SAPS receives recognition FEVER REPORTER

ARGATE SAPS recently held an awards ceremony in Margate, where members were recognised for contributing towards a safer festive season from December 2020 to February 2021.

According to Margate police spokesperson Sergeant Sibu Ncane, Margate Station Commander, Brigadier William Slabbert handed over trophies to members when recognising them.

“The Station Commander had initiated an operation called “Operation Cooler Box” after a number of people had drowned at Margate beach. Often the consumption of alcohol is a contributing factor when drowning occurs. Therefore the focus was to ensure the non-consumption of alcohol on beaches and in public,” said

Ncane.

He added that from December 2020 to February 2021 the police members engaged in this operation managed to confiscate 75 cooler boxes of liquor.

Furthermore, Ncane said the overall winning group was Warrant Officer Vasuthaven Pillay’s group, who received a trophy and a R1000 voucher.

“The rest of the groups led by Warrant Officer Sibusiso Ngidi and Captain Perumal Naicker also received trophies and R1000 vouchers. The groups consisted mostly of new constables.

The station commander would also like to thank all stakeholders such as security companies, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Law enforcement, business owners and the community at large for their contribution in this project,” said Ncane.

Locals show frontline workers appreciation

FEVER REPORTER AS the threat of a possible third Covid-19 wave looms, locals have expressed their gratitude to healthcare workers at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

The hospital’s public relations officer, Phumza Morai said they appreciate everything the public has done for them.

“The Port Shepstone Hospital management and healthcare workers are most grateful for the sweet way in which pupils from various local schools have thanked them for doing everything they could to keep others safe during the corona virus pandemic,” said Morai.

Creston College pupils sent chocolates and colourfully designed cards to the hospital’s theatre staff, she said.

Morai said San Lameer Resort management showed their support by giving the hospital’s frontline employees who worked during the Covid-19 pandemic a pen with engraved messages of support.

“Port Shepstone Lions Club has been a constant source of supply for baby clothes hampers in the Maternity Ward during the pandemic period. Pupils of Port Shepstone High School also sent a bunch of colourfully designed messages of support and appreciation to the hospital front line workers,” said Morai.

She said indeed Port Shepstone hospital employees are motivated by the expressions of love and thoughtfulness of the pupils.

“We would like to thank all of them for taking time out of their busy schedules to give such impressive gifts,” said Morai.

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital's staff is grateful for the recognition it is receiving from the community.

Deernis vir ander WANNEER laas het jy waargeneem wat in jou omgewing gebeur? Diegene wat hier langs die Suidkus leef, het die voorreg om amper elke dag die see te sien en die heerlike weer te geniet. Wanneer mens deurry na Gauteng kom jy veral in die winter agter dat alles nie oral so groen is soos hier nie.

Die afgelope tyd was daar oral protesoptogte teen dienslewering in ons omgewing.

Somiges ry weer oor slaggate, ruik verstopte riool, maar dit gaan by hulle verby. Wie is dan begaan oor wat om ons en in ons omgewing aangaan? Een van die gevare is dat mens nie God se stem kan hoor midde-in al hierdie dinge wat om en met ons gebeur nie.

Dit was in die tyd van die profeet Amos ook so dat mense onnadenkend deur die lewe gegaan het.

Amos 4 vertel vir ons van broodgebrek, van waterprobleme, van ekologiese rampe, van pessiektes, van jongmanne wat sterf in die oorlog. Tog het al hierdie dinge nie gemaak dat God se mense Hom geraadpleeg het hieroor nie. Dit was so asof hierdie dinge

IE dag na hierdie rubriek verskyn, sal dit Goeie Vrydag wees, die begin van die Paasnaweek. Die kern van die Christendom, waarsonder daar geen basis vir hierdie geloof kan wees nie.

Vir Christene is die boodskap van Paasfees dat ons op Goeie Vrydag die kruisiging van Jesus Christus herdenk. Die Sondag ná Goeie Vrydag herdenk ons die opstanding van Jesus uit die dood. Die graf was nie die einde van Jesus se lewe nie. Jesus is die lewende opge¬stane Christus wat leef en wat die wêreld wíl verlos van sonde. Ons, as gelowiges, wil juis in hierdie Páástyd hierdie boodskap aan die wêreld verkondig.

Almal moet weet van die goeie nuus dat Jesus Christus lééf en dat Hy sonde kán en wíl wegneem. Hulle moet ook weet dat Hy lewe en dat Hy graag in mense se lewens wíl inkom om hulle vry en nuut te maak.

Dis die jaar 2021. As ons om ons kyk sien ons dat bitter min mense van ons totale bevolking, ook onder selfverklaarde Christene, hierdie wonderlike ervaring sal deel, nie net weens die verwoesting wat veral die Covid 19-pandemie aangerig het nie, maar ook ellendige lewensomstandighede veroorsaak deur ‘n verskeidenheid ander redes.

Daar kan aanvaar word dieselfde situasie heers oral op aarde. Die uwe het opnuut hiervan bewus geraak met die raaklees van ‘n puik skryfsel van Natie Engelbrecht op die webwerf van die Stellenbosch Ge-

Sien die heuwels en berge om jou en erken dat jou en ander se hulp van God kom. Jy is deel van ’n gemeenskap en la Moenie net dankbaar wees oor jou eie watertenk wat jou vrywaar teen water-onderbrekings nie. Hoe gaan dit met ander in jou onmiddelike omgewing? Mag God se deernis met jou jou vul met deernis vir ander.

Die kind het ‘n lekker gesuig en gefrons vir haar pa wat elke motor gegroet het. Dis Paasfees. In Origin het ek op die laaste dag koffie uit Panama gedrink. Oorkant die pad het ‘n bergie gesit en kleingeld tel. Ons het na mekaar gekyk. En elkeen het die ander se tralies verstaan. Dis Paasfees. Op Facebook is daar nou foto’s van verruklike cuisine en mense wat braai. Meestal wit.

A fantastic start RACK ORQUE

AST Sunday we saw a fantastic start to the 2021 Formula 1 Season with a great race between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

Lewis eventually made it to the chequered flag just 7 tenths of a second ahead of the Flying Dutchman.

The race was full of small incidents but provided all of us with wonderful entertainment and very close racing which bodes really well for the rest of the season.

WHO NOW IS WHO IN THE NEW FORMULA 1 ZOO? As predicted the racing was much closer than last season and yes Red Bull and Honda have made great strides to close the gap on Mercedes.

In a nutshell Max the pole man with Lewis alongside him on the front row of the grid had a ding dong battle for virtually the entire race.

The last dozen or so laps in the dark of night were really electric, with Verstappen closing a two and a half second gap relentlessly then with just a few laps to go he dramatically took the lead from Hamilton but could not keep his car properly within track limits.

He had to slacken and let Hamilton by and start again but just couldn’t do the trick a second time before the chequered flag fell. What a race! Hamilton was ecstatic, Verstappen bitterly disappointed.

Valtteri Bottas in the second Merc came home third, 37 seconds behind the leader and Lando Norris did wonderful things with the orange Mclaren from Woking to finish only nine seconds behind Bottas.

Yes, the Mclaren Mercedes F1 racer is also very quick and we are going to see a lot more of them at the top end of the field this season.

In fifth place Sergio Perez in his Red Bull did a great job to finish where he did after having started in the pit lane.

I think Red Bull have got an excellent pairing with two really quick drivers.

Charles Leclerc drove a tremendous race in a much improved Ferrari to finish sixth with the other car

from Maranello also very well driven

by Carlos Sainz into eighth spot.

The late braking expert Daniel Ricciardo was at his usual best to complete the Mclaren performance both in the top seven. In ninth position was one of the new sensations of the sport, Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda in the Alpha Tauri also powered by the mighty muscular Honda engine.

The final points position place was taken by Lance Stroll in one of the beautiful looking British Racing Green Aston Martins.

Stroll did a typical James Bond job in the Aston while team mate Vettel, after showing great pace in practice and the early part of the race finished one lap down after taking Esteban Ocon out in the Alpine (Renault).

Vettel apologized to Ocon for what he said was “his mistake”! I have to mention that Mick Schumacher in his maiden race in the Haas Ferrari finished sixteenth, also one lap down but gained valuable experience to finish his first Formula 1 race.

We now have a gap of three weeks to the second Grand Prix at the sensational high speed and very challenging Imola track in Italy on April 18, 2021.

Youth development league continues FEVER REPORTER

HE Gamalakhe Youth Development League recently held a derby game between Young Achievers and Citizen in the under 17 division. According to Gamalakhe All Stars coach Sbo ‘Sgora’ Ngcobo, the derby lived up to its expectations as both teams came out guns blazing.

Citizen opened the scoreline with two goals in the first half, then Young Achievers came back strong in the second half equalising with two quick goals but Citizen managed to score the winning goal in injury time.
