Community against BAIL FOR RAPIST ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com The family of a 13-year-old girl who was allegedly raped at her home last week wants justice after her alleged rapist was granted bail. Senior family members have demanded that the court reconsider its decision of granting bail to the man who is very close to the family. They have called an urgent meeting to have the man “banished” from the community. “The family is awaiting a final court decision before we take a final decision on this matter. He brought shame to the family and to this community. “But we are not happy due to the fact that the court released him on bail. “He should have been kept inside until the matter is finalised in court.” A local Induna, Mhlabunzima Bhengu, said the girl has been taken to a place of safety after the man was released. Bhengu said the community of Kranskop has demanded that the suspect be sent back to prison to serve his sentence. “The incident happened at the time while we were still in shock after a pensioner was attacked and robbed of her grant. Residents are not feeling safe since the man was released on bail,” he said. Ward councillor Sandile Xulu said a community meeting will be held to address GBV incidents. Xulu said in August an elderly woman was attacked and robbed of her grant money at her home in the Ndimakude area, near Kranskop. “As the leadership in the area, we still hope the National Prosecuting Authority and the justice department will not drop the ball in this case. We want to see him behind bars,” Xulu said. The man will be appearing again in

the Kranskop Magistrate’s Court on October 13. Meanwhile, KZN Department of Social Development is concerned with the high number of GBV incidents in the province. The department has committed to relook at the budgets allocated to the fight against the unpleasant rise of GBV in an effort to strengthen women and family programmes. The department in partnership with the Durban University of Technology, hosted the ground-breaking colloquium, which dissected the nature and extent of GBV policies and gaps. The main focus was more on the men as perpetrators of GBV incidents. THE COLLOQUIUM DELIBERATED ON THE HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION: Why men are angry? The colloquium drew a lot attention to men as it is known that they are the ones perpetuating violence against women The provincial government committed itself to address all the challenges that were identified for men and the report will be presented to cabinet since prevention of GBV incidents needs has been mainstreamed into inter-departmental programmes. Spokesperson for the Department of Social Development Mhlabunzima Memela said the research conducted by academics, revealed that the lives of abuse victims are sometimes restricted in situations where they are continually micro-managed. “Another study also delves into the cumulative effects of coercive control over time, which “entrap” women (Stark 2007). “Psychological abuse impacts on women’s physical and mental health, with some women stating that this is worse than the effects of physical violence, existing inequalities influence how abuse works and impacts on people, as Hester (2017) points out, adding that it sustains and strengthens gender inequalities.”
